About the Sony KV-27FV300

Steve Kindig
The 27" KV-27FV300 uses the flat-faced Wega picture tube. Sony's incredibly popular FD Trinitron Wega design is what started the whole flat-screen craze. The Wega screen is vertically, horizontally, totally flat. Images look sharp, 3-dimensional, and virtually distortion-free from corner to corner. Reflected glare from room lights is also noticeably reduced.

This 27" has the traditional squarish 4:3 aspect ratio screen. You'll enjoy incredible detail and clarity with your everyday news and network shows — and watching sports is a "whole new ballgame." Sony's best 3D digital comb filter delivers higher horizontal and vertical resolution and reduced video noise. And its 10-bit signal processing renders ultra-precise gray-scale gradations. Sony's DynaBlack™ black level expansion circuit improves picture sharpness and contrast and reveals greater detail in darker scenes.

If you already own (or plan to buy) a DVD player, this is one of the best 27" models when it comes to displaying DVDs. Unlike VHS tapes, which usually re-format movies to fit a standard TV screen, DVDs often present movies in their original widescreen format. When the KV-27FV300 detects that a widescreen "anamorphic" DVD is playing, it can automatically switch to "16:9 Enhanced" mode.

Here's why videophiles love 16:9 Enhanced: Where most TVs reduce the number of scanning lines — and resolution — of anamorphic DVDs by 25%, 16:9 Enhanced mode slightly compresses the height of each line so you see the full 480 scanning lines. No image quality is lost because all of the scanning lines are concentrated in the 16:9 window and none are wasted on the non-usable portion of the screen (the black bars above and below). So whether the video source is widescreen or standard, you get full resolution — you'll love the picture!

If you plan to use this Sony in a home theater system, your A/V receiver and speakers will be handling the sound. But for those times when you don't want to fire up your whole system, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the '27FV300's muscular sound — 30 watts total, including 15 watts for the built-in subwoofer.

Even before you turn it on, the KV-27FV300 packs the visual punch of Sony's snazzy silver "arch" cabinet. This TV plays well with the rest of your A/V system — it has inputs for up to 4 A/V components, including one component video and front & rear S-video jacks, plus 2 antenna/cable inputs. And 2-tuner PIP is included for your channel-surfing convenience.

Features

Flat Screen: Sony's flat glass panel delivers images that are virtually distortion free and helps to eliminate screen glare.

Auto 16:9 Enhanced Mode (V-Compression): This set uses a special technique that gives you maximum picture quality when using anamorphic sources, such as some DVDs. When using an anamorphic source, the height of each scanning line is compressed for 33% better resolution, giving you the benefit of all 480 scanning lines.

DynaBlack Picture Enhancement: This feature improves contrast and sharpens image detail. You can choose a DynaBlack setting of Low, High, or Off.

10-bit 3D Digital Comb Filter: Sony's 10-bit 3D digital comb filter analyzes picture information horizontally, vertically and over time. You will get high resolution under most picture conditions. 10-bit signal processing renders superb gray-scale gradation, resulting in superior picture detail.

ClearEdge VM Velocity Modulation Scanning: This system separates the object and its background, producing clearer edges, better picture depth and improved overall picture quality. You can select Low, High, or Off.

Dynamic Focus Circuitry: This Dynamic Focus Circuitry adjusts the picture during each scanning line for consistent corner-to-corner sharpness.

Dynamic Picture Processor: The Dynamic Picture Processor maintains image detail in the very bright and dark areas of each scene.

2-Tuner Picture-in-Picture (PIP): This feature allows you to watch two programs at once using the television's internal tuners. One program is displayed in the main window, while the second program is displayed in a secondary PIP window. The secondary PIP window size can be set to 1/9, 1/16, or Off. You can move the location of the secondary PIP window to any of the four corners on the screen. In addition, you can alternate sound between the main program and the program in the secondary PIP window. Using the Swap function, you can instantly switch the main program with the secondary program. The Freeze function allows you to freeze the program in the secondary PIP window, while the main program continues to play.

Favorite Channel: This feature allows you to store and quickly access 8 of your favorite channels.

Video Mode: You can select Vivid, Movie, Sports, or Standard. The Vivid setting enhances picture contrast and sharpness. The Movie setting displays a finely detailed picture for low-light environments. The Sports setting brightens the picture. The Standard setting displays a standard picture for normal viewing environments.

Steady Sound: This feature stabilizes the volume level, preventing unwanted blasts of sound during commercials.

Sound Effects: To enhance the sound, you can select Simulated, which adds a surround-like effect to mono-channel programs, TruSurround, which adds a three-dimensional sound to stereo programs, or WOW, which provides a dramatic presence with a full, deep bass sound. When WOW is enabled, BBE is directly activated to further enhance the audio program. The sound effects can be turned off.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the television off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be set to 15, 30, 45, 60, or 90 minutes.

Timers: This unit has two timers that can be set by day, time, duration, and channel.

Remote Control

Multibrand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on other brands of A/V components, including VCRs, cable boxes, Laserdisc players, DBS receivers, satellite receivers, and DVD players. A select button and cursor keys allow you to move the on-screen selector, making menu navigation simple and efficient. The jump, enter, volume, channel, and numeric keypad buttons glow in the dark.
