Our take on the Sony KLV-32M1 by Crutchfield's Steve Kindig
Nobody knows more about creating exceptional-looking TV images than Sony, and they've proved it again with the elegantly compact KLV-32M1. Moving the speakers from the sides to below the screen reduces the overall width by several inches. The KLV-32M1 will look great on a kitchen counter, as well as in an office, den or bedroom.
As you compare flat-panel models, you'll find that the pixel count is only part of the story. Video processing contributes as much to overall picture quality as the display panel itself, and that's where Sony's innovative LCD Wega digital circuitry comes in.
The first step in the digital processing system is Direct Digital II circuitry, which increases the video signal-to-noise ratio when converting incoming signals from analog to digital. The signals are cleaned up in preparation for the next stage, Sony's famous Digital Reality Creation circuitry, which upconverts non-HD signals to near-HD quality.
You'll find composite, S-video, and component video jacks to connect your current video gear. There's also an HDMI digital A/V input for use with the growing number of HDMI-equipped components (DVD players, HDTV tuners, A/V receivers, etc.). This is an HDTV-ready set to receive High-Definition programming, you'll need to connect a separate HDTV tuner.

Consumer Alert: This component has only an analog broadcast tuner and will require a converter box after February 17, 2009, to receive over-the-air broadcasts with an antenna because of the Nation's transition to digital broadcasting. Analog-only TVs should continue to work as before with cable and satellite TV services, gaming consoles, VCRs, DVD players, and similar products. Features and Specs
Native Resolution: The HDMI and component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i signals, and will display them as 1366 x 768. The composite video and S-video inputs will accept a 480i signal, and will display it as 1366 x 768.
DRC (Digital Reality Creation) Multifunction: DRC Multifunction allows you to enjoy a very high-resolution picture from any standard NTSC image by using digital processing to convert all NTSC images to near-HD quality.
Direct Digital Circuitry II (DDC II): The TV features Direct Digital Circuitry II, which increases the signal-to-noise ratio when converting the signal from analog to digital to optimize its level before it passes through the DRC circuit.
LCD Panel Driver LSI: This technology minimizes motion blur caused by the response time lag of LCD panels by improving the response time in the middle luminance range resulting in smoother images on the screen.
CineMotion 3/2 Pulldown Processing: This function provides an optimized display by automatically detecting film content and applying a reverse 3/2 pulldown process. Moving pictures will appear clearer and more natural-looking.
Picture Mode: You can select one of the following picture modes: Vivid, Standard, or Pro. The Vivid setting enhances picture contrast and sharpness. The Standard setting displays a standard picture for normal viewing environments. The Pro setting displays a picture with minimum enhancements. In addition, you can adjust the picture quality options, such as "Picture", "Brightness", and "Color" for each Picture Mode selection.
Screen Modes: You can choose from the following Screen Modes:
- With 4:3 Sources:
- Wide Zoom: enlarges the center portion of the 4:3 picture proportionately, while the left and right edges of the screen are stretched to fill the screen
- Normal: displays the 4:3 picture in its original size with black bars at the left and right sides to fill the screen
- Full: stretches the entire 4:3 picture horizontally only to fill the screen
- Zoom: enlarges the entire 4:3 picture proportionately to fill the screen (useful for watching Letterbox movies)
- With 16:9 Sources:
- Full: displays the picture at its original size
- Zoom: enlarges the picture proportionately, both vertically and horizontally
- Wide Zoom: enlarges the picture to fill the screen with minimal distortion
Picture Position: The position of the picture on the screen can be adjusted vertically or horizontally. The "V-center" and "H-center" adjustments are helpful if the subtitles do not fit on the screen, or if the TV is connected to game equipment.
Dynamic Picture: Dynamic Picture circuitry maintains image detail in the very bright and dark areas of each scene. This feature can be turned on/off in the menu.
Speakers: The KLV-32M1 is equipped with two 2-way speakers located at the bottom of the front panel. Each speaker has a 2-7/8" woofer and a 2-7/8" full range driver.
Center Speaker Option: The TV's built-in speakers can be used as the center channel speaker in your surround sound system. The TV has a set of spring clip inputs for connecting the speaker wire from your A/V receiver's center speaker output (maximum input 180 watts at 6 ohms). You can select the center speaker mode for any of the video inputs. The volume of the speakers can be adjusted from the TV's remote or the receiver's remote control. When the Center Speaker Mode is set to "On", you cannot make sound quality adjustments such as treble, bass, balance, Steady Sound, etc. If the speakers sound unnatural in this mode, you can adjust the phase of the speakers.
TruSurround: TruSurround technology, licensed by SRS Labs, Inc., produces a surround-like effect from the TV's built-in speakers. You can set the Effect mode for each video input, and store them in memory. The TruSurround effect can be turned on/off in the menu, or directly from the remote control.
Favorite Channel: This feature allows you to store and quickly access 8 of your favorite channels.
Freeze Function: This function allows you to temporarily capture a program's picture by "freezing" the image.
Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the television off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be set to 15, 30, 45, 60, or 90 minutes.
TV Safety: After the connections with antennas and other equipment are completed, it is recommended that the TV be secured to a nearby wall or pillar to prevent the unit from falling over. Two clamp screws are supplied for attaching a security chain or cord to the TV.
Removable Stand: The display comes mounted on a removable stand, allowing you to wall-mount the TV if desired.
Wall Mounting Options: The TV has four M4 threaded mounting holes on the back for an optional wall-mount bracket, such as the Sony SU-LW1. The spacing of the mounting holes is 7-7/8" x 7-7/8" (200mm x 200mm). This spacing is VESA 200 (millimeters) compliant, in accordance with the industry standards set by the Video Electronics Standards Association.
Multibrand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on other brands of A/V components, including DVD players, DVD changers, DVD/VCR combo units, VCRs, cable boxes, and satellite receivers, as well as Sony A/V receivers, DVD Home Theater systems, and HDD/DVD combo units.
HDMI: This input consists of left and right RCA audio jacks and an HDMI terminal. The HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) terminal provides an uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface between the TV and any HDMI-equipped A/V component, such as a set-top box, DVD player, or A/V receiver. HDMI supports enhanced, or high-definition video, plus two-channel digital audio. With an HDMI-to-DVI cable, you can connect the TV to a DVI-equipped A/V component. When connecting the TV to a DVI-equipped component, you will need to connect the component's audio outputs to the TV's RCA audio jacks.
Note: The HDMI input will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals.
Component Video Inputs: The component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals.
Audio Outputs: These audio jacks are activated when the TV's built-in speakers are turned off, and are used to connect the TV to a receiver/amplifier. They can be set for Fixed (volume controlled by the receiver/amplifier) or Variable (volume controlled by the TV's remote control) operation.
Headphone Output: A 3.5mm headphone mini-jack is located on a drop-down panel on the bottom front of the TV.
