Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
The tv arrived in great shape, no damage. Took only minutes to set-up. The picture on my Samsung is better, but it serves it's purpose.

Sony's 40" KDL-40EX640 serves up crystal-clear 1080p high-def images that are brimming with detail. Thanks to this model's LED backlighting, you'll enjoy natural, lifelike colors with rich contrast and LED's energy efficiency doesn't hurt, either. Expect everything you watch to look its very best, from Blu-ray movies to YouTube clips. Motionflow blur reduction keeps the picture looking smooth when the on-screen action picks up pace.
More and more people these days are turning to the web for day-to-day viewing, so a TV's Internet smarts are important. The KDL-40EX640 includes built-in apps for accessing the Sony Entertainment Network, home to thousands of movies, shows, games and more. You can also stream movies instantly from Netflix® or listen to Pandora® Internet radio through the TV. Sony includes a USB Wi-Fi® dongle so you can enjoy entertainment pulled from the web or a PC on your home network without connecting an Ethernet cable.

Average Customer Review(s):
The tv arrived in great shape, no damage. Took only minutes to set-up. The picture on my Samsung is better, but it serves it's purpose.
After spending a considerable amount of time reviewing 40" LED TVs, I settled on the SONY KDL-40EX640. My decision was influenced by my favorable experiences with an older SONY 40" LCD TV which I have had for several years. Setup was straightforward and picture and sound quality met my expectations. The built-in wireless Internet access is a plus, but was not a major factor in my decision. I had some difficulty with stand assembly, but eventually resolved the issue - see Cons below for details. Overall, I am pleased with my choice of this SONY TV.
Pros: Straightforwrd setup. Excellent picture quality. Acceptable sound. TV interfaces properly with my AV system after appropriate setup per instructions.
Cons: Stand assembly instructions would be improved by additional details. Assembled stand will not rotate until TV is mounted to stand. Care with tightening screws is advised to avoid possible cross-threading during assembly.
Sony makes great looking TVs' no other comment.
Beautiful picture, easy installation. I couldn't be more pleased with my new Sony TV.
Pros: Crutchfield support for life.
Easy to set-up. Basically, plug it in and it runs through the set-up almost entirely on it's own. Amazing picture quality. This replaced a similar 40" Sony LCD I had (kids cracked the screen) and the LED backlight is much better than the older LCD TV's that do not have an LED backlight. Sound is really good too, and for them being on the bottom. Lightweight and easy to manage when wall mounting or mounting to a stand. Very thin design and small black trim around picture.....very sleek looking.
Pros: Could go on-and-on.......so how about this........AWESOME!
This TV has a great picture (using DirecTV HD), deep colors, solid blacks, and a fast refresh so there is no blurring. It has plenty of brightness, although I am using it in a room that is not in direct sunlight. Has decent sound for this size TV. There are a good selection of internet features such as Netflix, Amazon. I have an ethernet connection at the tv so have not needed to use it's built in WiFi. It found my home network immediately and connected effortlessly. It was able to download software updates over the internet with no problems. Crutchfield shipped it quickly and it arrived in perfect condiftion (even though it was a scratch and dent model) I found no scratches or dents, especially none on the screen, only the shipping box was a bit roughed up.
Pros: Great Picture quality, great internet apps, HDMI connection, energy efficient, lightweight enough anyone could lift it.
Cons: No outputs to jump sound/video to a second TV
Very easy setup, amazing piture quality. I could not belive the quality of the sound out of the speakers. We are very happy with our new TV.
The TV meets my expectations for picture quality and wireless streaming, but I can't say that it really exceeds them, so I would have given it 4 stars if it weren't for one audio problem I've encountered. Thus, it gets 3 stars. I'm using the TV's optical (toslink) output to connect to my stereo receiver (Onkyo TX-8050) since I prefer good stereo sound to the clutter of 5 or more speakers in a typical home theater configuration. Unfortunately, the TV toslink to stereo receiver configuration does not work for all sound sources, especially Dolby 5.1 streamed by Netflix and Amazon. Streamed videos with HE-AAC sound work OK, but those with Dolby 5.1 sound are silent. There are various workarounds (I've consulted Sony, Amazon Instant Video and Crutchfield support), but the problem could have been avoided if Sony had simply included a "downmix to stereo" feature, as is commonly found on Blu-ray players, for the TV's optical output. If the fix is just software, I suggest that Sony add it with the next update. This deficiency probably won't affect many people, but it did affect me.
Pros: Great picture
Cons: Does not handle as well as it should some audio formats used by Netflix and Amazon.
I purchased this TV mainly because of the number of inputs it has. The TV it replaced had only 3 inputs (2 HDMI). This has 6 (4 HDMI). Another reason I purchased this TV was because of previously great experiences with Crutchfield. I knew that if there was a problem they would take care of it. In addition, by purchasing from Crutchfield, I didn't have to pay Illinois' exorbitant sales tax.
Pros: Great picture and sound, ease of set-up.
Cons: None that I've discovered so far.
This Sony was easy to set up and connect to the internet. It's automatically set up with features for Netflix, Hulu, and other web video options that I didn't even know existed. The picture is beautiful and bright and defined. I am very pleased.
Pros: easy to set-up internet access
Cons: no manual buttons on the actual television--remote only
I have a Samsung, LG , and now this. Sony is simply the best. Picture quality is beyond amazing.
Pros: Picture quality
I spent a lot of time looking around for a new TV. When I started all I knew was that it needed to be roughly a 42" screen, LCD, and have at least two HDMI connections. As time went on and I became more familiar with the various products which fit my initial criteria I kept seeing this model come up in the searches that I ran on various websites. The search led me to the conclusion that there is no other LCD TV out there which combines the features of the Sony, along with the technical specs at what I considered to be a reasonable price point. Having decided what to get I then had to decide where to make my purchase. Crutchfield won that contest based on my previous experiences with them. They are a quality company and stand behind everything they sell. While I could have saved a few dollars ordering elsewhere the peace of mind I get when buying from Crutchfield is worth it. So far as the TV itself is concerned it is everything I expected. The image is very crisp and clear with no trace of smearing when watching NFL games. The colors are sharp and the high contrast ratio ensures that black is really black. The setup is very simple, requiring only a Philips head screwdriver and about five minutes. Overall, I couldn't be more pleased.
Pros: Quick and easy assembly, excellent picture quality, 4 HDMI ports plus Internet connectivity if desired (I don't use that feature right now).
Cons: Honestly, I cannot think of a single thing which bothers me about this TV.

Edge LED Backlight: The Sony Bravia KDL-EX640 series TV utilizes edge LED backlighting for dynamic contrast, smooth motion performance, and energy savings inside a slim designed cabinet. CineMotion: This function provides improved picture movement and reduces picture blur and graininess for film-based content. There are two settings.
Light Sensor Technology: The TV's built-in Light Sensor automatically adjusts the picture brightness based on the amount of light in the room. As a result, you can enjoy automatic customized picture brightness and save energy without lifting a finger.
Advanced Contrast Enhancer (ACE): The televisions Advance Contrast Enhancer (ACE) automatically adjusts backlight and contrast to the most suitable setting judging from the brightness of the screen. This setting is especially effective for dark scenes, and will increase the contrast distinction for the darker picture scenes. The ACE can be set to High, Medium, Low, or Off.
Wide Mode: The Wide Mode feature allows you to select the screen display which fits the current video image and TV screen best. Based on the original signal source, you may see black bars around the picture or just on the both sides of the screen. Sometimes you will see the picture fill the full screen.
|Wide Mode||16:9 Original Source||4:3 Original Source|
|Wide Zoom||Enlarges the picture to fill the screen with minimal distortion.||Enlarges the center portion of the 4:3 picture proportionately, while the left and right edges of the screen are stretched to fill the screen.|
