Sony XBR-49X900E

Premium picture quality for smaller rooms

Who says you need a mega-sized screen for a visually immersive experience? Sony's 49" XBR-49X900E produces a picture that will consistently wow you, no matter what source you're using. Thanks to Sony's unsurpassed video processing technology, along with impressive peak brightness capability, this TV delivers a vibrant, lifelike picture, especially with HDR (High Dynamic Range) content.

Wide-open color, clarity and contrast

What 4K does for picture detail, HDR does for contrast and color. Before HDR, video standards were based on old-school tube TVs with low brightness capabilities. By comparison, HDR-equipped TVs like the XBR-49X900E can display much greater contrast and a wider color spectrum. The combination makes pictures pop like you've never seen before.

The XBR-49X900E's full-array LED backlight produces accurate, localized lighting across the entire screen. By dimming some areas of the screen and boosting others, Sony's X-tended Dynamic Range PRO™ technology produces a brightness range that's about 5 times wider than what we've been used to with conventional LED-backlit TVs. And Sony's Motionflow™ XR 960 with 120Hz refresh rate is still one of the best blur-reduction technologies around.

Ready for 4K and HDR content

The XBR-49X900E is a great way to enjoy the HDR picture enhancements available from 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players and discs. And it will effortlessly display the streamed 4K/HDR movies and TV series available from Netflix®, Amazon Instant Video, Vudu, and more.

A lot of people aren't aware that you don't need 4K content to enjoy a terrific picture on a Sony 4K TV. Based on ten years' experience upscaling movies to 4K in movie theaters around the world, Sony has developed a processor so advanced it can upscale HD content to near-4K quality. This 4K X-Reality™ Pro chip visibly improves detail and color on all your sources.

A smart home begins with a smart TV

The XBR-49X900E's built-in Android operating system lets you easily log in to your Google ID to access a huge collection of apps, games and content from Google Play. Use the Google Cast feature (now called Chromecast built-in) to stream movies, pictures, and TV shows from your iOS or Android-based phone, or from a laptop. The remote has a built-in microphone that makes it easy to search for a particular movie or actor just by saying the name.

It could be 5 stars, but have had TV only a month. Works great and the only problem is Cox Cable. When you hook up to them you lose many functions that are inherent to the Sony TV. The Sony remote goes in the drawer and all its functions are lost.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had a Sony XBR-49X800D in my man cave for a year and we purchased this one to replace a Pioneer 50" plasma in our great room. Plasma great but heavy on the wall. I actually notice no difference in the two models and we are quite happy with both. Have both programmed to be used with our DirecTV remotes.

Pros: Near excellent pictures and can easily watch movies from the internet.

Cons: Does not support WiFi without an add-on transceiver.

    Fine Picture, remote confusing

Clayton H. from Gansevoort, NY on 4/7/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

TV picture is fine. There needs to be a website with compete detailed instructions on the remote. I have looked at the info available but it is not detailed enough, in my opinion. If you can point me to a site with more details, I would appreciate it.

Pros: Picture quality, sound is fine, but I use a soundbar anyway.

Cons: Remote it hard to learn, need clear instructions.

The Best Yet ! I have always had some form of buyer remorse. Not this time. I have been looking at all 2017 and 2018 49 and 50 " TV 's. Finally decided after several agonizing months I would try the 900E..I also own a 55" LG oled. The 900 E while not being quite as good in performance it is very impressive. The color spectrum and the blacks are some the best you find. Very happy with the purchase, ....Sony and Crutchfield....The Best

Luke from Pittsburgh, PA on 2/27/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm very happy with the Sony XBR-49x900e. I wanted the smallest 4kHDR set with the best picture quality and a modern design, and after reading many reviews I chose the Sony. I was upgrading from an old projection style 1080p tv. I had upgraded my AV receiver a couple years ago so I was hopeful the two would work well together. Instead of running all inputs through the receiver, I connected everything to the new tv, then used the HDMI Audio Return Channel to send sound back to my receiver. The apps for streaming services generally work very well and the picture is fantastic. I was very happy with how the cables could be routed through the legs of the stand. If I could improve something... sometimes apps (Hulu for instance) will crash if you leave and try to go back in to watch again. This causes you to have to reload the app. Would like to be able to remove some of the unwanted links to content in the guide, but it isn't a major issue.

Pros: Easy & clutter free setup Great design beautiful picture

Cons: sometimes apps crash or are slow to load

Excellent picture quality and easy setup

Shelley from Montgomery, IN on 2/23/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent picture quality and easy setup. Love the updates on the remote, have the 55" also, purchased in December of 2016. The arrow buttons on the newer remote are defined by a raised edge on the outside so you don't go too far and hit another button. This is a common problem on the older remote. Really love the way these TVs operate.

Pros: Automatically updated Easy operation Excellent picture quality

    Cons: None

I was looking for a top quality sub 50" TV to hang on the wall in my Bedroom. The Sony XBR-49x900E was one of the few 4K LED TV's on the market that has Full Array Back Lighting and HDR. The picture quality is excellent in all lighting conditions. You can't go wrong with this quality set paired with the excellent customer service and pricing from Crutchfield.

Pat from Washington, VA on 2/4/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Extremely pleased with the Sony 49X900E. Would buy again. I also purchased the Sony UBP-X800 blu-ray player to drive the 900E. One of the things I struggled with was how to set them up so that I could get the best picture for older and lower resolution DVDs, i.e. which device was to do how much upscaling. I found a marked improvement if I let the X 800 player upscale to 1080p and let the TV do the upscaling from 1080p to 4K. So the 900E's HDMI format was set to "Enhanced format" on the HDMI 2 input connection and the X800's 4K upscaling was set to "Auto 1" for the HDMI out. (HDMI inputs 2 and 3 on the 900E apparently support the higher bandwidths required for 4K transfers from a player so they are the best choice even if you don't have any 4K disks yet.) What happens with Auto 1 when you are playing a DVD with lower resolution than 1080p (Have Gun Will Travel, e.g.) is that the X800 will upscale to 1080p before it outputs the HDMI signal. This means the 900E will do the upscaling from 1080p to 4K. This gave the best results from both devices and the over all best picture results. It's not surprising to me that the player would have the best algorithms for upscaling older DVDs. That would be one of its differentiators in its market place. By letting the player upscale to 1080p it also offloads processing from the 900E which is a good thing. It took me a lot of hours to get this all figured out so I hope others might find this h

Pros: Love the picture and everything other than sound seems very adequate for my needs.

Cons: Really needs a sound bar. My old Polk Surround Bar 6000 works just fine using the Toslink connection.

We finally replaced our old 200 pound Sony Trinitron HD ready TV that we got from Crutchfield in 2004. I did a lot of research and we went with the Sony XBR-49X900E and are very pleased. It was easy to setup. The Smart feature replaces our Roku. Like any new HDR set out of the box the colors are a bit overwhelming if you like a more subtle film look. There is a good YouTube video that walks you through a 15 minute calibration process that produces an excellent "film like" picture. Crutchfield delivery was fast even to Montana. Customer service is the best.

Pros: Easy setup, good smart features, excellent picture

Hear me X Box One X Gamers; if you are searching for a 4K, HDR10 TV to show off the power of your system at a reasonable price your search has ended. This TV will give you all the green checks for the video requirements. Again, this TV will give you all of the green checks for the X Box One X.. The games look incredible on this TV as well as off the air TV signals. I strongly recommend you calibrate the TV using the X Box set up, which gives you the best picture for gaming and watching your apps. For example, I needed to lower the contrast and make additional changes to optimize the overall picture. Also, make sure you go into the settings and switch the HDMI cable signal from standard to enhanced. Do not be discouraged if you are using a A/V receiver and at first you are not getting the green checks for the HDR 10 signal. I needed to make some very quick changes on my receiver before the signal would pass so do some research on how to make this happen before you get frustrated or better yet, call Crutchfield for help. If you are worried about having this size TV delivered by a trucking company don't despair. It arrived in great condition and if it did not then Crutchfield would make it right. You will not get the customer service and life time technical support from any box store. The men and women at Crutchfield know their stuff!

Pros: Excellent picture, 10 bit display is awesome, I get all of my green checks

Cons: Power brick on the electrical cord is bulky. I wish the cord was longer.

Best 49 inch tv you can buy

Doug from Port Isabel, TX on 12/14/2017

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

space- not cost - was my issue and debated between the Vizio m series 50 inch- the Samsung Qled 49 inch- and this Sony 40 inch xbr900. Chose the Sony because of the local dimming and the true color pallet. For 4k- of course the picture is outstanding... What mattered to be was how all the other things I watch on Direct TV would look. You need to adjust the pictures from the factory settings. For basketball and football----their sports mode is great. For all the other shows---I went into the custom mode and did the following... brightness 30...Contrast 95...Gamma 0...Blacklevel 52..BlackAdjust and Adv Contrast- both off...Auto local dimming medium...Xtended Dynamic range High... Color 52..Hue 0...ColorTemp cool......Live Color off,,,Sharpness 61..Reality Creation,Random Noise Reduction,DigitalNoise Reduction----ALL OFF.........Smooth Gradtion Low...... Motion flow set to True Cinema and then Then CineMotion set to high..... ALL VIDEO OPTION TABS SET TO Auto------ With these settings----all your other programs look almost 4k.... Lastly if your wife like HGTV----try the Vivid picture mode for this station only----it really pops----- This is a great TV

Pros: You can custom set 3 great picture settings---1 for sports- 1 for all else--and 1 for a specially watched show like HGTV

Cons: To get this great picture without any motion lag or soap opera effect---you do need to use 1 of the 3 modes.....The sports mode for example will make a regular program look odd... But once these are dialed in---you cannot get a better picture...It will knock your socks off

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great picture and feature set. The best TV, I think, that we could buy for our cabinet space (no sub 50-inch OLEDs). Works flawlessly with our sound bar and the Apple TV connected to the sound bar in pass through mode. I like the remote and its ability to control the sound bar and Apple TV. 4K video is pretty stunning and off-angle viewing is not too bad. Lots of weird screen flashing as it switches between TV or app input and HDMI (ARC) input from our Apple TV (which is connected via the sound bar), but that is relatively minor and may be related to the use of video pass through on our sound bar and the ARC bi-directional connection.

Best 49'' HDR TV on the market!

Michael from Decatur, AL on 11/9/2017

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My old Samsung plasma TV died, so I went out and read all the reviews online, reviewed the technical specs, even went to the store multiple times to compare the Sony XBR-49X900E against the Samsung and LG 49 inch TVs. I found that the Sony XBR-49X900E offered the best all around performance, viewing angle, color brightness, glare reduction and native HDR when compared against the Samsung and LG TVs. In fact, my research indicated this was the best 4k HDR TV I could get for the size (This is the largest TV that will fit into my cabinet.) The biggest con I have with the TV is the Google Android Smart TV (I am using an AppleTV so the Android TV issues are not that bad) operating system is slow or sluggish when compared with the Samsung and LG TVs. I bought with Crutchfield because the price was the same everywhere I looked, but Crutchfield offered free shipping and installation and 60 day satisfication guarantee. TV arrived via UPS Freight (not your UPS brown truck you see in the neighborhood) in three days. I went to the local UPS Freight terminal to pickup my TV ( I didn't want to have to wait over the weekend for the TV) and went home and installed the TV that evening. The stand seems stable and holds the TV really firmly. Everything was really easy to install and hookup. I have had the TV three weeks and everything looks great. No issues with picture, sound, HDMI outputs, or power supply.

    Cons: Android Smart TV

Casimer from Moneta, VA on 10/19/2017

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great picture. Bright colors, deep blacks, no blurring of fast motion. Did not require any color adjustment at all - we are running the factory setup. In spite of several 'professional' reviews to the contrary we found the sound from the built in speakers to be very clear and more than loud enough for our listening. Much better than the sound from the three other flat panels TV's we have. Many available inputs and outputs, more than most. This makes it possible to connect the audio directory to my existing sound system, something that many newer TV's cannot do because they do not have analog output for sound. Easy to use.

Pros: Picture, sound, ease of use, inputs and outputs, looks great - my wife loves it.

    Cons: Cost

Nice TV, beautiful picture. Chose this size over larger size to fit into a built-in cabinet. The family immediately noticed the brighter colors and deeper blacks. Delivery was on time and received phone call from UPS to confirm I'd be home to accept. Some reviews on web were negative regarding the sound/speakers - sound is quite acceptable for a very thin TV. Very happy with this TV.

Pros: Picture quality (color and clarity), thin border, light weight

Cons: A lot of features - it will take me a while to take advantage of each ;-)

    Worth the extra money

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We were considering buying a Sony 4K TV for about $800. Then we read that the screen was only illuminated at the edges, not backlit from edge to edge, and as a result the black was not black black. Also, this unit had a lot more pixels than the less-expensive model. So we ponied up $200 for this Sony, figuring in for a penny, in for a pound. Boy, what a difference. Images are very sharp and beautifully detailed. However, if you think you're just going to turn on the TV, watch a little regular programming, and then switch to video streaming and back to TV again, you will discover that you're not in Kansas anymore. If you use a receiver with external speakers, which probably most people spending this much for a TV do, you have to change the input on screen to HDMI 3/ARC every time, because when you switch from streaming to TV, the input resets. Not a deal breaker, by any means, but it is an irritant.

Pros: Super-back picture A lot more pixels than the next cheapest Sony TV Full backlighting instead of backlighting only at the edges Good-looking unit

Cons: Input must be reset every time you switch from streaming back to TV if you use a receiver with external speakers rather than the TV speakers. If you use the handsome TV stand, the TV is not very stable. My cats nearly knocked it over. We had to wall-mount it just to keep it sturdily in place. The power supply that comes with the unit has a very short plug-in cord and a very short cable that plugs into the TV. This will present a challenge is you want to wall-mount the unit.

This, easy to set up and attach the base. Beautiful picture, decent sound, although I did add a sound bar. All I do is watch TV, so I can't comment on all the other possible "bells and whistles" this product has.

Pros: Thin & lightweight. Decent sound. Easy to set up.

    Cons: None, so far

A purchase you will not regret. Upscales all inputs wonderfully. 4K content is stunning. Get a decent soundbar or audio system. This is great for older eyes.

Pros: Image, Value to cost ratio, Light weight.

Cons: Android can be hinky sometimes. I found that returning to "home" prior to shutting the TV off gives it a more consistent and reliable behavior.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Sony Bravia has fantastic picture quality. It displays a lot of sharply focused details and a wide range of colors which makes everything on the screen appear very life-like. That said, the audio quality is lacking because the speakers are on the back of this TV and project backward. It sounds fine when you are behind the TV, but the audio is muffled and quiet when you are sitting in front of the TV viewing the screen. (I have the TV free-standing rather than wall-mounted.) I get around the sound issue by utilizing my stereo system which has powerful speakers, and just mute the volume on the Sony TV. I bought this TV for the picture quality as it was the best in its size.

    Pros: excellent picture quality

    Cons: weak audio quality

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Serious audio out of lip-sync problems The audio is out of sync on all the TV input ( Cable TV, Sony's ex 800 Blu-ray player ) including internal apps ( Netflix, YouTube, etc.) with TVs internal speakers. Sonys firmware is up-to-date and android system is up-to-date too. Sony-tact have updated the TV six different times. Sony's tech-support solution is to buy this TV back from me again. Its my second NEW XBR in the last 6 weeks.

Pros: Amazing picture when the performance enhancement tools are turned on

Cons: Audios out of sync with the video when the picture enhancement are turned on (Motion flow, HDR, etc. ) basically anything that enhhances the quality of the video seems to affect the timing on the audio Horrible Sony Support, not the Sony company we grew up with.

Crutchfield response on 6/21/2017 We're sorry you're having issues with your TV. If the problem continues, please just reach back out to our tech support team. They can either help get the TV working the way it should, or possibly return it for an exchange or refund.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Absolutely brilliant ! I needed to replace my 10 year old 46 inch Samsung LCD, and this Sony XBR-49X900E is awesome. Had I known the newer models were so compact and full, I would have ordered a 55 inch rather than the 49 inch Sony. I couldn't be happier. Vivid colors, sharp picture, and ease of use. A winner !

Pros: Clarity, color, versatility, in a word, brilliant !

Cons: Audio is a bit muffled, though I'm sure the edition of an external sound bar or surround would more than fill the room

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great display. I'd pretty much given up on Sony. As TV progressed into LED and 4K HDR I felt Sony was way behind LG and Samsung in terms of pure style and picture quality. This TV changed my mind. The image quality straight on rivals that of LG and Samsung. Viewing from the side it isn't quite as bright as the other two but who watches from the side? We put this in our bedroom and we really like it. I'm giving this 4 Stars because I'm no fan of that big brick on the power cord. That thing really made my wall installion a pain trying to figure out where to place it. If comes with a well designed stand so if you're placing it on a cabinet you don't need to worry. Other than that, I highly recommend it.

    Pros: Beautifully designed, great picture.

Cons: Big brick on the power cord.

Alan from Milwaukee, WI on 5/5/2017

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Picture quality is superior - TV sound is only average. Once my surround sound system was recognized, TV remote now operates everything - great simplification! Don't forget to perform channel scan before you attempt to switch to antenna input (if you use that functionality). Input for channels will not automatically scan for channels and instead just says "no channels found - connect antenna". Very happy with purchase!

Pros: Video quality, simplified remote operation of multiple devices

Cons: Acceptable but only average audio quality (down firing speakers are somewhat muffled).

    Love my Sony!

Amazing Picture! Love my Sony 4K!

Pros: Amazing Picture, easy to operate. Stand that comes with the set is in the middle of the TV, so i was able to use it on my existing stand. The new trend to put the legs on the end of set (Samsung) did not allow me to put the set on my existing stand.

Cons: The only thing i miss from my older sets is the red pilot light that tells you the set is off. I guess this feature has become obsolete.

I am a technologically challenged guy and wouldn't begin to attempt the typical technologically comprehensive user review you often see here. All I can say is that this is an unbelievable TV. Absolutely amazing picture. For example, watching sports is wonderful in terms of clarity and zilch lag. No buyer's remorse here; couldn't be more pleased. And, Crutchfield service is unsurpassed. They cheerfully endured an hour phone conversation getting everything right. Thank you.

Excellent television. Ergonomic design with a minimal frame to maximize 49 inch screen size and minimize outer dimensions. Menu setup easy to navigate. Remote is very functional and simple to use overall. While it displays 4K content, the market seems to be catching up with 4K peripherals such as DVD players and 4K DVD's. Very happy with purchase, and dealing with Crutchfield is a pleasure in itself.

Pros: Quality, picture, size, ease of use

    Cons: A bit pricey.

Finally, a more premium 49" LCD TV, Thanks Sony!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The 2017 X900E is an excellent choice for a mid level LCD TV. Impressed with the deep black levels, X1 Processor / up-scaling and motion handling. There is a bit of "halo" or "Blooming" around bright objects such as a street light in a dark scene, but not overwhelming noticeable. On some professional reviews of the X900E there was mentioning of picture quality deteriorating on viewing angles, at a 25-30 degree angle, we do not notice any difference in picture quality. HDR content is above average for a TV in this price point.

Pros: Full-Array LED Back-light, X1 Processor, Super Bit Mapping, excellent contrasting, only $100 more in price over the X800E. Great value.

    Cons: No X1 Extreme processor.

4K HDR: For the ultimate in picture quality, this TV pairs the brilliance of 4K clarity with the brightness, color, and detail of High Dynamic Range (HDR). Combined with 4K Ultra HD resolution, HDR video content delivers exceptional detail, color and contrast, with a far wider range of brightness than other video formats. The result is the most lifelike picture TVs have ever been able to create, with brilliant highlights and fine detail.

    • Ultra 4K Resolution: See more on TV than ever before with over 8 million individual pixels (3,840 x 2,160) compared to about 2 million (1,920 x 1,080) on your 1080p HDTV. Advanced picture processing also ensures that every single pixel displays images with superb brightness and authentic detail. It's the highest resolution picture Sony has ever produced on a TV.
    • HDR (High Dynamic Range): HDR (High Dynamic Range) reproduces a greater dynamic range of luminosity or brightness levels, bringing greater contrast & wider color spectrum to the screen. This increased contrast reveals the subtle nuances of the image, from detailed blacks and shadows to the brightest whites and colors, plus greater depth. Previously hidden areas of dark shadow and sunlight are now full of clarity and detail. The Sony TV supports two HDR formats - including HDR10 which is the most widely used format and is installed from the factory, plus HLG (Hybrid-Log Gamma) which is designed for over-the-air broadcast and requires an over-the-network firmware update.

Note: Please use a premium high speed HDMI cable with 18 Gbps and above to view HDR content.

4K X-Reality Pro Upscaler: Sony's  4K X-Reality Pro Upscaler enhances Ultra-HD, HD, and SD images by analyzing and refining images with beautifully natural detail and astounding color. This 4K television upscales your favorite TV shows, DVD and Blu-ray movies, even video-on-demand content, and smartphone videos to Ultra-HD quality. This unique 4K X-Reality PRO picture processing technology upscales every pixel for remarkable clarity. Advanced noise reduction techniques and a special pattern database ensure every scene is full of lifelike detail. One database is used to clean the picture, reducing on-screen noise; the other is used to upscale the resolution, improving clarity; while another database improves color, brightness, and contrast. These three powerful image improvement databases work together, dynamically improving pixels in real time. Each database has tens of thousands of references, amassed from Sony's experience creating content for TV and movies over the years.

    • Upscaling Database: Unique to Sony, 4K X-Reality PRO picture processing upscales every pixel for remarkable clarity. Pixels across multiple frames are analyzed and images sharpened and refined in real time. You will immediately see the detail appear in faces and skin tones.
    • Pattern Database: With 4K X-Reality PRO, patterns in images are compared with patterns stored in a unique database to find the best hue, saturation, and brightness for each pixel. Sony uses the knowledge gained from developing and filming blockbuster movies and TV shows to deliver supremely lifelike detail in everything you watch.
    • Noise Reduction Database: Compressed noise is identified by the database, which includes "before and after" data on what a picture should look like and removes the compressed picture noise. A variety of noise reduction techniques are then used by 4K X-Reality PRO to sharpen and refine images. You'll immediately see how scenes become clearer, smoother, and more natural.

4K HDR Processor X1: The 4K HDR Processor X1 with Object-based HDR remaster and Super Bit Mapping 4K HDR technology gives pure colors at higher brightness levels for truly natural pictures. See everything you watch come to life with greater depth, detail, and texture.

    • Super Bit Mapping 4K HDR: Super Bit Mapping 4K HDR creates a smoother, more natural picture by minimizing its color banding. With 14-bit powerful signal processing, it breaks up the solid bands of color of an 8-bit or 10-bit source, up-converting to 14-bit equivalent gradation, with 64x more color levels. It delivers graceful reproduction of faces, sunsets, and other areas of subtle color.
    • Object-Based HDR Remaster: By analyzing the objects in each scene individually, Object-based HDR remaster optimizes and enhances color and contrast. It brings everything you watch closer to the quality of HDR. Dark elements get darker, bright elements brighter, and everything in between is more accurately lit, for realism in every scene never-before-possible on our TVs. You'll see contours on mountains, hidden textures on flowers, depth in clouds, and wildlife has the contrast and color of nature, for a more natural and realistic picture on screen.

X-tended Dynamic Range PRO 5x: With extraordinary precision in backlight control, X-tended Dynamic Range PRO makes darker areas darker and brighter scenes brighter, revitalizing every scene with the widest range of brightness possible.  This unique backlighting algorithm faithfully reproduces a far wider brightness range than a conventional LED-LCD TV with brighter peaks and deeper, more revealing shadow detail and blacks. By precisely balancing the light output across the screen, dimming some areas and boosting others, X-tended Dynamic Range PRO reveals a brightness range 5x greater than a conventional LED-LCD TV. When combined with a 4K HDR signal, you'll experience even greater brilliance in every scene as it increases the quality of HDR with more vibrant colors

TRILUMINOS Display: Unique to Sony, a TRILUMINOS Display with its specially developed backlight selectively maps colors across a wider gamut, ensuring subtle colors do not become oversaturated and unnatural. You'll enjoy vivid, authentic images that evoke the emotion in every scene. The more pencils you have to draw an image, the more vibrant and lifelike it becomes. TRILUMINOS Display works in the same way, using a wider color spectrum than a conventional LED-LCD display. A TRILUMINOS Display excels at reproducing reds, greens, and blues; colors that are notoriously difficult for TVs to display accurately. It also displays skin tones beautifully, thanks to its extensive color palette and precise gradation.

MotionFlow XR 960 Technology: Enjoy smooth and sharp details even in fast-moving sequences with Motionflow XR 960. Sony's MotionFlow XR 960 technology feature a precise backlight control that is synchronized with the liquid crystal movement from frame-to-frame creating clearer, sharper moving images. MotionFlow XR 960 combines 120 frames-per-second with the TV's advanced LED backlight system to simulate a 960 Hz effect. This innovative technology creates and inserts extra frames between the original ones and then compares key visual factors on successive frames, then calculates the split second of missing action in the sequences. MotionFlow XR 960 provides smooth and precise detail during fast-action scenes for fast action movies and sports by reducing blur caused by quick camera movements, enhancing image sharpness, and overall creating a clearer picture. You can select between various settings - Standard, Smooth, Clear, True Cinema (24fps), and Custom.

Video Inputs: The Sony Ultra-HD TV is equipped with HDMI 2.0a, Component, and Composite video inputs. A back cover has to be removed to access these video inputs.

    • HDMI 2.0a: The Ultra-HD TV is fitted with four HDMI 2.0a inputs to connect your Ultra-HD/HDR and HD sources; such as Ultra Blu-ray, Blu-ray, Satellite/Cable and Playstation. In addition, any HDMI input can be used to connect a PC to this TV. The HDMI inputs will accept 4K, 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals. HDMI inputs 2 & 3 will do 4K (60Hz), while HDMI inputs 1 & 4 will only support 4K (30/24Hz).
      • HDCP 2.2: HDCP 2.2 is supported by all of the TV's HDMI inputs. HDCP 2.2 is short for "High bandwidth Digital Content Protection" and is used for 4K video copyright protection for compatibility with Ultra HD Blu-ray players and 4K Satellite/Cable providers.
      • 4:4:4 Color Subsampling: All four HDMI inputs will support up to 4:4:4 chroma subsampling for full color data rendering of 4K video (30/60fps). 4:2:2 (30/60fps) and 4:2:0 (60fps) are also supported by all HDMI inputs. With 4:4:4 color, luminance (brightness) and chroma (color) are sampled at the same rate, resulting in an RGB color palette as big as the video sampling rate for a video image with more total colors, plus greater color accuracy and detail.
    • Component/Composite: There is one combination analog video input that can be used as a component or composite video input; it shares a single stereo RCA audio input. As a component video input, it will accept 1080p (60Hz), 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals. As a composite video input, it will support 480i video signals only. There is also a 3.5mm AV input for connection of an analog audio/video component.
Note: The TV has built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) and Clear QAM tuners with an RF-coaxial input, so you don't need a separate set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV or unencrypted Digital Cable signals.

Picture Adjustments: The TV offers a variety of screen, picture, and video adjustments to maximize image quality.

    • Screen Modes: The Screen Modes feature allows you to select the screen display which fits the current video image and TV screen best. Choose from Wide Zoom, Normal, Full, Zoom, or Auto Wide. Based on the original signal source, you may see black bars around the picture or just on the both sides of the screen. Sometimes you will see the picture fill  the full screen.
    • Picture Modes: You can select one of the following picture modes - Standard, Vivid, Cinema (Pro/Home), Sports, Animation, and Custom.
    • Advanced Video Settings: The Advanced Video Settings menu offers further adjustment of the TV's video image.
      • Brightness: You can increase or decrease the brightness of an image by adjusting the TV's Brightness, Contrast, Gamma (adjusts light/dark balance), Black Level, and Black Adjust (enhances black areas).
      • Color: You can tailor the color of an image by adjusting the TV's Color, Hue, Color Temperature (white balance), Color Space (sets color reproduction range), or Live Color (produces vivid colors).
      • Clarity: You can improve the clarity of an image by adjusting the TV's Sharpness, Reality Creation (increases clarity), Resolution (increases detail), and Noise reduction (removes noise).
      • Motion: Activate Sony's Motionflow technology to reduce motion blur and judder. CineMotion provides improved picture movement and reduces picture blur and graininess for film-based content, like Blu-ray & DVD.

Light Sensor & Advanced Contrast Enhancer (ACE): The TV's built-in Light Sensor automatically adjusts the picture brightness based on the amount of light in the room. As a result, you can enjoy automatic customized picture brightness and save energy without lifting a finger. The televisions Advance Contrast Enhancer (ACE) automatically adjusts backlight and contrast to the most suitable setting judging from the brightness of the screen. This setting is especially effective for dark scenes, and will increase the contrast distinction for the darker picture scenes.

Live Color Technology: Powered by an image processor using an algorithm specially developed by Sony, Live Color is able to reproduce incredibly vivid colors on screen. With four user-adjustable settings available (High/Medium/Low/Off), you can choose just how vivid you want your images to be. Whether it's a brilliant blue sky or a bright red rose, everything stands out so much more with Live Color.

Dynamic Contrast Enhancer: The Dynamic Contrast Enhancer optimizes the range of brightness frame-by-frame according to what's happening on screen to reproduce deeper blacks, brighter whites, and more video color.

24pTrue Cinema (24p Input Capability): Many movies are filmed at 24 frames per second (fps) and prime time TV programs are video taped at 24p. Seizing on an opportunity, some studios are taking a purist approach and encoding high definition video content such as Blu-ray Disc in 24p. Sony wisely takes advantage of this by including 24p input capability via HDMI on this television producing images that are smooth and natural looking.

PIP (Picture-in-Picture): Through an over-the-network firmware update, the TV will support PIP (Picture-in-Picture). This feature lets you watch the TV's over-the-air tuner in a small window on-screen, while viewing an Android TV app (like Netflix or Amazon).

    Audio Features

ARC (Audio Return Channel): The Audio Return Channel within the television's HDMI 3 input enables the TV, via a single HDMI cable, to send audio data "upstream" to an A/V receiver; increasing user flexibility and eliminating the need for any separate S/PDIF audio connection. This feature allows audio to be sent from the television to your A/V receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio/video to the television. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to the TV. ARC allows audio from the TV tuner, Network connection, inserted USB device, HDMI inputs, or any analog connected device to be heard through your ARC compatible AV receiver via the television's HDMI ARC input.

    • The audio from the TV's tuner, HDMI inputs, USB ports, and Android TV apps can pass as Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital, DTS, or 2ch PCM.
    • Analog connected & DLNA compliant devices will be output audio at 2ch PCM only.

Note: Both the television and the receiver must support ARC for this function to work properly. When connecting an AV receiver that is compatible with Audio Return Channel (ARC), connect it to the TV's HDMI 3 input. If connecting a system that is incompatible Audio Return Channel (ARC), an additional audio connection via Digital Audio Out (Optical) is necessary.

Audio Outputs: The Sony Ultra-HD TV offers analog and digital audio outputs, as well as Bluetooth headphone pairing (firmware update required).

    • Digital Audio (Dolby Digital/DTS): The optical digital output terminal will output Dolby Digital/DTS (when available) or 2 channel PCM. The digital optical output terminal only sends an audio signal in Dolby Digital/DTS when receiving Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound from a digital broadcast channel through the tuner, network apps, HDMI inputs, and USB ports on the TV. The optical digital audio output will only output in 2ch stereo from sources connected to the TV via RCA.
    • Headphone/Analog Output: The TV's 3.5mm analog output can be used to connect a set of headphones or as an audio output to connect your home theater receiver or soundbar system. You will need a minijack-to-RCA adapter (sold separately) to make a stereo RCA connection between the television and your AV receiver. The TV's analog audio output terminal will output 2ch audio from any of the television's source inputs. You can set the TV's analog output to Fixed or Variable. You can set the TV to automatically mute the built-in speakers when a set of headphones are connected.
    • Bluetooth Headphone Pairing (Requires Firmware Update): Through an over-the-network firmware update, the TV will be able to support Bluetooth headphone pairing - allowing you to stream audio from the television's built-in and connected sources to a Bluetooth-enabled set of headphones (only one set of headphones can be paired - not compatible with Bluetooth speakers). Bluetooth headphone volume level can be controlled from both the TV's remote and headphones. The TV's built-in speakers and audio outputs will be deactivated when streaming audio via Bluetooth.

S-Force Front Surround: S-Force Front Surround mimics the way the brain correlates sound sources to create proper volume, time lag, and sound wave spectrum; using only left and right speaker channels. By naturally emulating three-dimensional sound fields, you'll enjoy rich, high-fidelity audio across a wider listening area.

ClearAudio+: ClearAudio+ fine-tunes TV sound for an immersive experience that seems to surround you. Hear music, dialog, and surround effects with greater clarity and separation, whatever you're watching.

Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE): Low-resolution Internet video and other heavily compressed audio files don't always sound so great. A large amount of information gets thrown away when digital audio is compressed. With Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE) technology, lost frequency components (especially high frequencies) are restored for natural sound with a more spacious feel.

Clear Phase: Sony uses a powerful computer model to analyze and compensate for inaccuracies in speaker response. It does this by "sampling" the speaker frequency with higher precision. This information is fed back to cancel out any peaks or dips in the speaker's natural response; resulting in pure, natural audio with smooth, even reproduction of all frequencies.

EQ: The TV offers four EQ preset sound modes - Standard, Cinema, Music, and Live Football. The TV is also equipped with a 7-band EQ (125Hz, 250Hz, 500Hz, 1kHz, 2kHz, 4kHz, 8kHz). You can adjust the level of each band between -12 to +12 dB.

Voice Zoom & Night Mode: The Voice Zoom feature makes voices clearer by lowering background sound. Night mode provides a clear sound at a low volume levels.

Volume Offset & Auto Volume: Volume Offset adjusts the volume level of the current input relative to other inputs. The Advanced Auto Volume function keeps the volume level constant across all programs and advertisements.

TV Position: The speakers of this TV provide different sound images according to how you position the television. You can select between "Table-Top Stand" or "Wall Mount" to provide the best sound quality based on the television's placement.

    Network & USB Functions

Wired or Wireless Network Connection: The Sony Ultra-HD TV supports a wired or wireless network connection. Via the TV's network connection you gain access to Android TV and Google Play, as well as content stored on your network computer. You also get the ability to stream content from your Android or Apple iOS mobile device to the TV.

    • Ethernet (LAN) Jack: The Sony TV is equipped with an Ethernet (LAN) RJ-45 jack for connecting the television to your home network and computer. A back cover has to be removed to access the Ethernet port.
    • WiFi (wireless LAN): The Sony TV offers built-in WiFi (802.11ac; 2.4/5GHz) that allows you to wirelessly access the Internet and your home network. The TV's built-in WiFi provides a wireless network connection for the television with easy and quick setup. A wireless connection requires a home network with an 802.11 access point (802.11n or better recommended) and internet connection. Could only fit a 49-50" set in my family room due to cabinet restrictions. I figured since we don't buy TVs often we might as well invest in the best set (outside of OLED) that we could buy. 4 questions already asked

It does, but very limited as to what devices it will connect to. I had to get an inexpensive BT transmitter to connect to Bose headphones. That solution works great for late night or early morning listening. [ Harvey  Jan 15, 2018 ]
Yes, there are Bluetooth settings for this tv. [ john  Jan 11, 2018 ]
Yes. Great TV, particularly at this screen size which is below the standard 55" and 65" industry standards. [ Paul  Jan 10, 2018 ]
Not sure that the TV will alway turn to the same input. Most of the time mine seems to. However, the Sony Remote is the only less than perfect aspect of Sony TV's. The buttons are small and crowded with no backlight. Very difficult to use even if you have no vision issues. I'd suggest that you use a 3rd party remote with this TV. I have added Harmony remotes to my Sony TV's. This way, all the user would only need to do is press the "Watch TV" activity and the input would be correct on the start of the activity. Hope that helps. [ Harvey  Nov 28, 2017 ]
I just checked mine and it seems to return to the last input it was on. For instance, the last time o turned my tv off it was on input 2. When I just turned it back on it was still on input 2. It did not default back to input 1. Hope this helps [ john  Nov 28, 2017 ]
Thanks for your question. If you purchase from Crutchfield there is an initial 60 day satisfaction guarantee.
