Sony KDL-50W800B

Sony's KDL-50W800B is living-room ready in both appearance and performance. Sony has found a sweet spot with this particular combination of tried-and-true screen technologies. The picture pops in a way that's very engaging yet never over the top, whether you're watching sports, movies or TV shows. Count on enjoying a stellar picture, in 2D or 3D.

A pair of picture quality improvers

Sony doubled down on picture quality by using two of their most advanced video processing technologies. The X-Reality™ Pro chip enhances detail and reduces video noise by actually drawing on a database of real patterns, shapes and textures to display a startlingly lifelike picture. You'll see the benefits of X-Reality Pro on everything from Blu-ray discs to Netflix® movies to video clips from your smartphone.

Sports fans love the way Sony's Motionflow™ XR 480 technology produces clear, lifelike motion for that at-the-game feeling. It's a finely-tuned combination of 120Hz refresh rate, backlight scanning, and some additional video processing. And Motionflow's benefits go beyond sports viewing. If you've ever wanted to get rid of that jerky, distracting image judder you see during horizontal or vertical camera pans in movies, Motionflow can do it.

Watching more on the web

Sony Entertainment Network More and more people are replacing or supplementing cable and satellite programming with streamed web content. The KDL-50W800B has built-in apps for accessing the Sony Entertainment Network, home to thousands of movies, shows, games and more. You can also stream HD movies instantly from Netflix and Amazon Instant Video, or listen to Pandora® Internet radio through the TV. Built-in Wi-Fi® lets you enjoy entertainment pulled from the web or a PC on your home network without connecting an Ethernet cable.

New ways to connect with and control your TV

The KDL-50W800B has four HDMI inputs for connecting all of your high-def sources. If you like swapping photos with friends and family, Sony gives you a couple of options. By using the TV, a compatible Android™ or iOS® device, and your home wireless network, you can pass and share photos from your phone to the TV. In addition to standard Wi-Fi operation, Sony's Wi-Fi Direct Mode completely bypasses your wireless router. The next time your friends want to share photos or videos from their smartphones, they can wirelessly "throw" the content straight to this TV. You can also do screen mirroring from TV to device if your smartphone is Miracast™ enabled.

Great, Great TV Set!

Joe D. from Bronx, New York on 4/8/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Have had the 50W800B for a week now, enough time to do some extensive tweaking and to say this is just a great set! The HD picture is simply stunning and I'm having the time of my life watching it. The up conversion for DVD is fantastic. Increased resolution in small objects, with no harshness on the edges or inside details. It is more than I ever especially because my collection includes movies from the silent era to now recorded onto DVD-R from HD stations like Turner Classic Movies, HBO, etc. The up conversion for these surprised me as well. I was afraid going from a 34 inch CRT (34XBR960) to a 50 inch LCD would bring out more of the limitations of my recorded DVD-Rs but that did not happen. Compared to the original source, the recording is between a 7.5 and 8.0 out of ten, which is quite acceptable for forty cents a movie LOL. Still have some old VHS tapes, mostly silent films that are not available on DVD or have not been broadcast on TCM. This is where one can see how well the up conversion process works. It still lags far behind the quality of HD but isn't bad at all. Do not own bluray so can only talk about simulated 3D. A lot better than what I expected. It actually makes the picture appear quite natural like looking through a window. The picture is slightly darker because it is active, however, the resolution remains superb. Though not true 3D in the way intended by the producers, its more than adequate for us since we did not purchase the set for 3D.

Pros: Great Picture Quality, Superb Up Conversion, Nice Simulated 3D

Cons: The remote could be better, though this should not warrant any second thoughts about purchasing the set. The direction buttons are encircled too closely by others which causes one to press the incorrect button way too often.

Sony 50 inch

Paul from Roseville, CA on 4/5/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My mom recently moved from her home to a senior apartment near by. She had a 32 inch Sony for many years in her old home. She's been a SF Giants fan for decades and wanted her to be able to see the games in a much bigger screen size than what she had. So far, this TV has been excellent for her HD cable connection and she is very happy with her new TV.

Great Picture, Sound is Okay, Wall Mounting Terrible

JMN from Ohio on 3/29/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The TV on its own has a great picture. The sound is a bit sub-par when compared to other flat screen TVs in this price range, however, I had planned ahead of time to pair this television with a Polk Audio Sound Bar and Subwoofer anyway, so I can't gripe too much about the TV's internal sound system. My biggest gripe is the design in the back of the television. The mounting points to fix the TV to a wall are ridiculous making it very hard to match a universal wall mount kit to this television. The TV set does come with its own mounting solution, but it is very unstable and cheap (a repurposing of the TV stand transforming it into a wall bracket) making the TV not flexible or practical. The power cord itself is a bit disappointing as well as it has the transformer/bridge rectifier built into a this brick box making it hard to hide the power unit behind the TV. I really dislike the design all around and the mechanics involved with wall mounting the unit. If the are in the market for a TV with a great picture and plan on pairing it with a sound bar AND using it as a table top unit then it's a decent choice for a new TV, but if you want a sturdy wall mounting TV I would avoid this and look into purchasing other TVs.

Pros: Great Picture. Light weight. Thin.

Cons: Wall mounting and power cable are poorly designed. Sound is a bit sub-par.

Sony 50" TV

CWB from North Carolina on 3/18/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Lots of research on current models TV's--- can't beat a Sony, and with 120 Hz, and picture quality, clarity, and other features, as well as overall quality, this is a sweet deal. Do your own research, and you'll come right back to Sony.

Pros: All pros with clarity, overall quality, features, value for $ spent, and longevity. All considered no real negatives.

Cons: No real cons. All current TV's tend weak with sound, so simple --- get a soundbar.

Nice Sony Product

jsalisbu from Ohio on 3/16/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice upgrade for my mother, from a Sony 32 inch to this 50 inch model. She is very happy with the picture quality. The extra bonus with this TV is the headphone jack, in the back of the TV but easy for her to reach in the table top location. She uses the headphones so she does not have to have the main speaker volume up too loud in her condo. Initial setup fairly easy.

Pros: Headphone jack, picture quality

Cons: None

Great TV but . . .

Larry from Georgia on 2/27/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great TV and I am very happy with this purchase. Excellent picture (better than my old plasma that I 'thought' was excellent!), OK sound (not unusual for a thin, flat screen; I use a Sony sound bar). The "but" has to do with the mounting. This TV comes with its own mounting hardware which is actually the stand turned sideways. This means that it is a fixed mount with possible difficulties attaching to wall studs. In order to mount this TV with a standard VESA mounting bracket (fixed, tilting, or articulating), you must first attach an adapter. After considerable research, I was able to locate the right one--SU-WA1 manufactured by Sony on For some reason, Sony or resellers neglect to mention any of this on any product description webpages I've seen. The adapter costs about $45.

Cons: Mounting issues.

Great TV

TomokY from Virginia on 12/31/2014

I am very satisfied with this TV. Color is great and the size is perfect in the living room. I was recommended to use HD Cable Box from cable company and I really saw the difference. I had to pay extra for this, but it is worth it.

Pros: Just the great size TV and fits in my living room.

Cons: I don't have any.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Have had 2 weeks. So far its great. Easy to set up and hook up to existing cable box and sound bar. Stand is cheap, but works fine.

Pros: Easy Setup

Cons: I hate the online instruction manual. A pain to look up anything.

Not a fan at all

Derek from Marietta, GA on 12/21/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The picture is great but the sound stinks. If you want to watch without stereo, it doesn't sound good. The speakers face down not out which muffles the sound. The mounting is the worst and they should discontinue the product just for that alone. The brackets have to be installed 13 inches apart. Hello......who has studs 13 inches apart? Had to attach a piece of wood on the studs and then the bracket to the wood. So now more holes and tv is further from the wall. Bought TV here on Cyber Monday and 5 days later when I considered returning, it was $200 cheaper. Not cool Crutchfield! There was no online help available. The TV was left at neighbors with no call for delivery. The whole experience was the worst I have ever had on this site.

Pros: Picture is really good.

Cons: Mounting brackets are a reason not to buy. Combine that with bad sound from speakers and I would advise not to buy.

Excellent TV

Stan from Utah on 6/13/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an excellent TV. Lush, smooth color as one expects from Sony. One other reviewer complained about "off-axis" viewing with this TV - I don't see any such problem until I'm at an angle so steep that I can't see the picture anyway. Having looked at a number of other brands, this one is a little less punchy than Samsung or Vizio, but much more pleasing to my eyes. The bezel of the TV is so thin it basically disappears except for the thin black strip at the bottom, putting focus entirely on the screen. The TV includes its own wall mounting bracket, which is also a plus (and I don't find it at all flimsy as another reviewer did - mine is nicely anchored). Apps are very responsive.

Pros: Beautiful picture. Clean design. Good placement of cable jacks on the back. Speakers produce good vocal definition.

Cons: Proprietary mounting system, but it is included in the price of the set.

Sony kdl-50w800b

PeauxB from Houston, tx on 6/5/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The TV itself has a beautiful picture, but there are two things that bother me. First, the updates have been frequent and annoying. Second, the included wall mount is flimsy, and worse still, it doesn't mount on 16" center. I.e., you can't mount it into studs. And in typical Sony fashion, the rear holes are not VESA compatible, but you can buy a Sony proprietary to VESA bracket (Which happens to be on back order). This is my third Sony LCD, and after the last two, I've sworn off the brand.

Pros: Picture

Cons: Updates and mount

IslayMalt from Washington, DC on 4/27/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very attractive television, very light weight, easy to use, very good picture. Only negative is that I was a bit surprised at the quality of "off-axis" viewing. I realize this a problem for LCD-based Televisions but this model it seems a bit more pronounced. I purchased this TV for my elderly mother who sits in her chair when she is watching TV. The TV picture "in the zone" is simply fantastic, full-blown Sony awesome. Slide 4 feet "off-axis" and you will notice significant dimming. While this is the perfect TV for my Mother, not sure I would buy it for myself. Curtchfield Assistance/service/delivery Top Notch!

Pros: On-Axis Picture Quality is outstanding, Simplicity of operation, ease of setup, very easy to handle.

Cons: Off-Axis picture dimming, Price....

Dynamic Edge LED Backlight w/ Frame Dimming Technology: Dynamic Edge LED backlighting with frame dimming delivers pitch-black night scenes and illuminates bright scenes so they pop with vibrant color; all in a slimmer, more attractive design. Rather than illuminating the entire screen, lighting is boosted in just the right areas for greater contrast and a more realistic picture.

X-Reality PRO Engine: Sony's X-Reality PRO Engine lets you enjoy a vivid, lifelike picture experience by analyzing each scene pixel-by-pixel so you see sharpened images, amazing contrast, and fine detail. Blu-ray Disc movies, cable TV, satellite TV, and even Web videos each place unique demands on the processing circuits of a TV. The X-Reality PRO Engine helps get the best results from these different video sources by analyzing texture, outline, contrast, and color reproduction. The X-Reality PRO Engine will then analyze each scene pixel-by-pixel across 3-dimensions (Width, Height, and Time) and uses sophisticated pattern matching to optimize the picture, ensuring you always get the best images possible.

MotionFlow XR 480: Sony's MotionFlow XR 480 technology combines 120 frames-per-second with an advanced backlight blinking system to simulate a 480 Hz effect. MotionFlow XR 480 provides smooth and precise detail during fast-action scenes for fast action movies and sports by reducing blur caused by quick camera movements, enhancing image sharpness, and overall creating a clearer picture. You can select between various settings.

  • Standard: Provides smooth picture movement for standard use.
  • Smooth: Provides smoother picture movement for film-based content.
  • Clear: Reduces motion blur for high-speed picture content.
  • Clear Plus: Reduces motion blur while maintaining brightness for high-speed picture content.
  • True Cinema: Images, such as a movie created in 24fps are reproduced at the original frame rate.

Automatic Intelligence: The TV's built-in Light Sensor automatically adjusts the picture brightness based on the amount of light in the room. As a result, you can enjoy automatic customized picture brightness and save energy without lifting a finger. The televisions Advance Contrast Enhancer (ACE) automatically adjusts backlight and contrast to the most suitable setting judging from the brightness of the screen. This setting is especially effective for dark scenes, and will increase the contrast distinction for the darker picture scenes.

1080p Resolution: The Sony KDL-W800B series television has a HD native resolution of 1920 x 1080 (1080p).  All video signals from standard definition and high definition sources are displayed at 1920 x 1080. The Sony KDL-W800B series TV is equipped with HDMI, Component, and Composite video inputs.

  • 4 HDMI Inputs: The KDL-W800B series TV is fitted with four HDMI inputs to connect your high-definition sources; such as Blu-ray/DVD player, Satellite/Cable receiver, game system, and  AV receiver. In addition, any HDMI input can be used to connect a PC to this TV. The HDMI inputs will accept 1080p (60/24Hz), 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals.
  • Component Video Input: The component video input will accept 1080p (60Hz), 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals. If needed, the component video input can be used as a composite video (480i only) input instead.
  • Composite Video: The composite video input will support 480i video signals only.
Note: The TV has built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) and Digital Cable (QAM) tuners with an RF-coaxial input, so you don't need a separate set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV or unencrypted Digital Cable signals.

24pTrue Cinema (24p Input Capability): Many movies are filmed at 24 frames per second (fps) and prime time TV programs are video taped at 24p. Seizing on an opportunity, some studios are taking a purist approach and encoding high definition video content such as Blu-ray Disc in 24p. Sony wisely takes advantage of this by including 24p input capability via HDMI on this television producing images that are smooth and natural looking.

MHL Compatible: The HDMI 1 input is designed for the connection of select mobile phones and other portable electronic devices using the new MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) standard. Simply plug your MHL compatible smartphone into the TV's HDMI 1 (MHL) input using the HDMI cable that is included with your mobile phone. MHL allows you to display full 1080p video and still images on the Sony TV from your mobile smartphone. The TV's IR remote can be used to control basic playback functions (such as Play/Pause, Stop, Fast Forward/Rewind, and Menu navigation). Your MHL compliant device will also charge while connected to the TV's HDMI 1 input. To find MHL-certified devices, go to

Active 3D Technology: The Sony KDL-W800B series TV gives you the option to enjoy 3D (three-dimensional) pictures and graphics. You can enjoy an immersive, realistic movie and gaming experience in Full HD 1080p using the included active 3D glasses (two pair included). Enjoy 3D content from the TV's built-in network apps, or your HDMI connected Blu-ray player, satellite receiver, or gaming console. When using the active shutter glasses, the on-screen image is precisely synchronized and delivered with the Full HD 1080p image intact, for an optimum 3D viewing experience. Sony's 3D technology displays high speed synchronized left- and right-eye images to deliver an amazing 3D experience. And since each frame you see is shown at Full HD resolution, the 3D action still offers razor-sharp detail. You can adjust the following 3D settings.

  • 3D Adjustment: You can adjust the depth of the 3D image to your personal preference, as well as set the image brightness when using the 3D display mode.
  • 2D-to-3D Conversion: To ensure that you can enjoy 3D any time you want, Sony has incorporated 2D-to-3D conversion, which allows you to watch your favorite 2D movies, TV programs, or games in virtual 3D.

Wide Mode: The Wide Mode feature allows you to select the screen display which fits the current video image and TV screen best. Based on the original signal source, you may see black bars around the picture or just on the both sides of the screen. Sometimes you will see the picture fill  the full screen.

Wide Mode 16:9 Original Source 4:3 Original Source
Wide Zoom Enlarges the picture to fill the screen with minimal distortion. Enlarges the center portion of the 4:3 picture proportionately, while the left and right edges of the screen are stretched to fill the screen.

  • S-Force Front Surround: An immersive listening experience with realistic clear, powerful 360 surround sound
  • Voice Zoom: Clearer dialog and speech, even with distracting background noise.
  • ClearPhase: Produces smoother and more balanced low, mid and high frequency.
  • Sound Booster: Enhances both treble & bass in order to reproduce a more dynamic sound.

Note: The speakers of this TV provide different sound images according to how you position the television. You can select between "Table-Top Stand" or "Wall Mount" to provide the best sound quality based on the television's placement.

Sound Modes: The TV offers six preset sound modes - Standard, Music, Cinema, Game, Sports, and Compressed Audio. If the Sound Mode is set to Cinema, Sports, Music or Game, a surround sound technology developed by Sony reproduces a virtual surround sound field. The TV is also equipped with an adjustable 7-band EQ (100Hz, 200Hz, 500Hz, 1kHz, 2kHz, 5kHz, 10kHz) for further fine-tuning.

Volume Adjustment: The Sony TV employs Advanced Auto Volume & Volume Offset, so your sources are always playing at the correct volume level. The Advanced Auto Volume function keeps the volume level constant across all programs and advertisements; it can be set to Normal, Night, or Off. Volume Offset lets you adjust the volume level of the current input relative to other inputs.

ARC (Audio Return Channel): The Audio Return Channel in HDMI 1.4 enables a TV, via a single HDMI cable, to send audio data "upstream" to an A/V receiver; increasing user flexibility and eliminating the need for any separate S/PDIF audio connection. This feature allows audio to be sent from the television to your A/V receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio/video to the television. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to the TV. ARC allows audio from the TV tuner, Network connection, inserted USB device, HDMI inputs, or any analog connected device to be heard through your ARC compatible AV receiver via the television's HDMI ARC input. The audio from the TV's tuner, network connection, and USB input can pass as Dolby Digital or 2ch PCM. HDMI and analog connected devices will be output as 2ch PCM only.

Note: Both the television and the receiver must support ARC for this function to work properly. When connecting an A/V receiver that is compatible with Audio Return Channel (ARC), connect it to the TV's HDMI IN 2 port. If connecting a system that is incompatible Audio Return Channel (ARC), an additional audio connection via Digital Audio Out (Optical) is necessary.

Audio Outputs: The Sony HDTV offers analog and digital audio outputs.

  • Headphone/Analog Output: The TV's 3.5mm analog output can be used to connect a set of headphones or as an audio output to connect your home theater receiver or soundbar system. You will need a minijack-to-RCA adapter (sold separately) to make a stereo RCA connection between the television and your AV receiver. The TV's analog audio output terminal will output 2ch audio from any of the television's source inputs. You can set the TV's analog output to Fixed or Variable. You can set the TV to automatically mute the built-in speakers when a set of headphones are connected.
  • Digital Audio Output: An optical digital output is provided to allow you to connect the unit to a surround processor. The TV's digital audio output terminal outputs a Dolby Digital or 2-channel down-mixed PCM signal for use with an external Dolby Digital decoder or other external audio system with an optical audio input. The TV's optical digital terminal will output audio from the television's antenna, HDMI, and RCA inputs. The digital optical output terminal only sends an audio signal in Dolby Digital when receiving Dolby Digital surround sound from the TV's built-in tuner, network connection, or connected USB device. The optical digital audio output will only output in 2ch stereo from sources connected to the TV via HDMI, or RCA.

Optional Wireless Sub: You can use Sony's optional wireless subwoofer (SWF-BR100, sold separately) to extend the bass response of the TV's sound. Simply connect the wireless transceiver supplied with the SWF-BR100 wireless subwoofer to the TV's analog audio output and USB port.

Notice the usual decrease in color and contrast expected from LCD beginning at around a 35 degree angle but the loss is nothing dramatic. Of course, one needs to sit closer to center for 3D which is the norm for any set so that has nothing to do with the Sony in particular. [ Joseph  Apr 16, 2015 ]
The TV looks good to me from all viewing angles. You don't need to be concerned about that. [ David  Jan 02, 2015 ]
Chris, we have owned several Samsungs and now this Sony and have been very happy with all of them. We have never noticed any issues with viewing angles. I suppose if one wanted to sit close and far off to the side creating a real flat angle, there might be a problem, but for any "normal" set-up, I think these TVs are terrific. [ Kenneth  Dec 29, 2014 ]
H just purchased the Sony TV and I do not have an issue with the viewing angle. It is a super TV and recommend it! [ John  Dec 29, 2014 ]
hi Chris i love this t.v. has a great picture and the color is wonderful plus its a Sony. i buy only sony frances K [ frances  Dec 29, 2014 ]
I exchanged this model for the 55 inch sony. I only used the 50" for about a week. there was something about the hue that bothered me. I am absolutley delighted with the 55 inch. it is perfect in every aspect. it is the best tv i have ever owned. as for the samsung, i hated everything about it. setup was a nightmare. the picture could not come close to the sony. it was very difficult to operate, where the sony is simple. i would not recommend the samsung. [ michael  Dec 29, 2014 ]
Seems to be hype to me about the viewing angle. I can see the picture fine at up to 45 degrees. [ NANCY  Dec 29, 2014 ]
Bought two kdl-50w800b sets and had them shipped to our new home. Analyzed and decided they were the best. Unfortunately I don't get to unbox them until next Tuesday. [ RUSSELL I  Dec 29, 2014 ]
Hi Leslie It gives the option of side by side with adjustable size and picture in picture where one resides in the lower corner. The side by side can be used with a 1080 source on the left and a non-hd source on the right. Not sure about the picture in picture. The only drawback is there is no function button on the remote so one must go through a series of steps in order to access this feature. Fortunately, I kept the remote from an old set which had this button on it. [ Joseph  Apr 16, 2015 ]
We have not received any answers from other customers on your question. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to help answer your question. [ Krissy  Jun 17, 2014 ]  Staff
