Sony's first-generation 4K TVs wowed skeptics and demonstrated how riveting this hyper-detailed viewing experience could be. The 65" XBR-65X850B is part of their latest generation of 4K sets.
This new model is much sleeker and slimmer, and a lot more affordable. Its most important upgrade is the ability to play the streamed 4K content available from Netflix® and Amazon Instant Video. Picture quality is, in a word, amazing. This set delivers the accurate, unhyped images we expect from Sony's premium XBR technology, along with the spectacular detail we expect from Ultra HD TV.
Ultra HD will enhance the quality of everything you watch, with a screen that has four times the resolution of a regular "full HD" 1080p TV. Sony teams this 4K screen technology with their TRILUMINOS LED backlighting, which provides more depth and shades of color than you've probably ever seen before.
Sony's FMP-X10 Ultra HD media player.
To enjoy the highest-quality 4K viewing experience at home, connect this TV to Sony's FMP-X10 4K Ultra HD media player, which will make it easy to download movies for rental or purchase, to watch at home anytime. Sony's Video Unlimited 4K online store already has over 200 titles. The FMP-X10 connects to the XBR-65X850B via HDMI, and provides the best possible picture quality.
The XBR-65X850B's screen contains over 8 million pixels (3,840 x 2,160) — the higher pixel density is easily visible. Equally important to the overall viewing experience is Sony's 4K expertise, which extends from "lens to living room." They build professional 4K cameras and cinema projectors, and Sony Pictures has a bigger catalog of 4K films than any other studio. This end-to-end approach helps ensure that XBR owners can have a truly theater-like experience at home.
True 4K content will be scarce for a while, but that shouldn't keep you from considering this TV. Based on ten years' experience upscaling movies to 4K in over 15,000 theaters worldwide, Sony has developed a processor so advanced it can upscale HD content to near-4K quality. This 4K X-Reality™ Pro chip enhances picture quality by analyzing and correcting images, resulting in impressively natural detail and color. You'll see the benefits of X-Reality Pro on everything from Blu-ray discs to Netflix® movies to video clips from your smartphone. X-Reality Pro enhances detail and reduces video noise by drawing on a database of real patterns, shapes and textures to display a startlingly lifelike picture. You also get Sony's Motionflow™ XR 240 blur reduction, which maintains clear motion even with fast-action content.
The XBR-65X850B has built-in Wi-Fi® so you can stream a variety of HD entertainment straight from the web. You can access an endless selection of entertainment at the Sony Entertainment Network, where thousands of movies, TV shows, videos, games and music are always at your fingertips. And connect to even more movies, music and apps by wirelessly mirroring what's on your compatible Android™ smartphone.
This TV comes with not one but two remotes. The new "One-flick" touchpad has several advances over the typical button-style remote. First, it operates via Bluetooth instead of IR, so it's less finicky as far as needing to be precisely aimed at the TV's remote sensor. And the touchpad makes screen navigation and switching between apps quick and easy. The other remote is a standard IR clicker.
Great quality, very easy to manage and also hooking up surround sound and home theater systems . Excellent audio and video , Exceptional 3D as well.

Great quality, very easy to manage and also hooking up surround sound and home theater systems . Excellent audio and video , Exceptional 3D as well.
Awesome TV beautiful I have tried other brands but there is nothing like a Sony and Crutchfields is so easy to work with I ordered it on a Thursday and it was derived that Monday at 2 PM thank you Crutchfields
Pros: Beautiful easy to set up overall I give Sony and Cruthfields 5 STARS
Cons: The only draw back is A Sony issue my Sony soundbar hides the remote reader on TV I am working on a solution
Going on my third set. First one had some pixels go black, almost like the screen had a bruise. After a couple of weeks it also started powering itself off. However, the set had good uniformity and great color. I received the replacement today and it has terrible flashlight issues and darks scenes are difficult to watch. I will be calling tomorrow to get an exchange (3rd set in last 30 days). If there are any other issues I will be looking for a different model or brand all together. I am pretty bummed but Crutchfield has been great so far.
Pros: Color and overall ease of use.
Cons: Uniformity, and other technical issues.
Excellent TV. Great variation of settings, beautiful picture quality, easy to assemble (stand), easy to set-up (installation w/Roku/cable box etc.), slim profile, more glare than our previous television (also a Sony) but could be due to head-on view/no tilt or the size. Crutchfield service is the best, very attentive, helpful, lightning fast delivery, thank you card as a follow up - just great!
Nice sharp picture
Worth the investment for the up conversion alone. Granted my previous set was 8 years old but the difference in quality is striking and everything looks better from local news to sports to streamed content and then some. Simple esthetics, reasonable weight, amazing picture, features galore (most of which I doubt I will ever use) and because of the very slim frame I was able to go from a 52 to a 65 without sacrificing that much more wall space. I was very much on the fence about whether to go 4k and whether to stick with Sony or finally go the way of Samsung or some other brand but man am I glad I picked this one.
Excellent 4K 3D OLED TV for the price! Amazing picture quality and a lot of apps built. Even my older DVD's look better on this TV with the Sony upscaling 4K Blu-ray player. I was all set to buy the Sharp 70" 4K, until I saw the viewing angles on the Sharp were no where near as good as the Sony XBR-65X850B. If you have people sitting on the sides of your living room, this TV has so much better viewing angles. The color, brightness, depth, motion are all amazing. The passive 3D is stunningly great! I can't even believe how much better Netflix and even YouTube look on this TV. I am so glad that this TV came down from last year's price. The TV comes with two remotes a full one and am awesome touch pad one, a built in Skype camera (haven't used it yet). This TV matched with my Onkyo TX-NR737 sounds amazing. I have has this TV for a few weeks now and I am really glad I went with this TV, because the picture is absolutely beautiful!
Pros: Everything was super easy to set up HD and 4K Picture is amazing Fully loaded with tons of apps Touch pad controller and regular full controller Comes with two 3D passive glasses in the box Plenty of connections. Best Value for the price Makes non 4K content look so much better. Looks absolutely fabulous mounted on the wall/thin
Cons: I haven't found any yet!
Pretty great tv. Had it for two weeks so far and I have been impressed. I would give it 4.5 if there was a half start option
Pros: The picture is awesome
Cons: There isn't a built in web browser that I have found. Also the manual is not that thorough.
I have previously owned Sony TV's and felt it was time to upgrade. After viewing numerous tv's at different retailers, I settled on this set from Crutchfield. I am amazed at the crispness, sharpness and overall quality of the picture. It is far superior to the Sony I had previously. Kudos to Sony.
Pros: As stated above, I love the quality of the picture.
Cons: A long delay when changing channels on DirectTV.
I returned a less Samsung 65" set (which arrived defective.) I'm happy that I had the opportunity to take advantage of Sony's clearance of their 2014 models. The 850B is an outstanding TV, and would have been considered even at the original price. At under $2300, its a no brainer. Set up was fast, apps work well, and 4K content on this TV makes a difference. I'm streaming 4K services from Netflix and they look great. Any lesser TV would have been a disappointment, and given that I only buy a TV once every 5-8 years, spending the extra was the right move for me.
Pros: Picture, value, quality, set up.
Cons: None - Buy it.
Sony provides a great picture but misses the mark with smart features. I have a comparable Samsung and the apps and web features on it are much easier to use. These are not just TVs any more. Sony hits a home run with the picture. Their apps and smart features lack user friendliness.
Pros: Picture is outstanding.
Cons: Smart features lack user friendliness and functionality you would expect in this type of product.
I've had this TV now for 3 weeks. I wanted to get familiar with it and learn what it can do. The picture is very customizable. Although the default settings are almost ideal. The picture quality is amazing and vivid. The menus are informative but are slow to display. The same can be said for the remote control responsiveness. The remote control is very laggy. There is a very noticeable delay from when I hit the button and when the TV notices the input. But don't let that deter you from what this TV is all about and that's the picture. The picture once dialed in is lifelike. The colors are natural and not over saturated. I love Sony TV's and this one is exceptional. Honestly, it doesn't get any better than this picture.
Pros: Picture quality
Cons: Laggy remote
Stunning picture. As expected from Sony. Functionally simple. Love the TV.
Pros: Picture quality. Clean look.
This TV is awesome, the picture is so much better than any of my previous TV's. The IP controllability is very nice as I use Rommie Remote and my entire setup is controlled over the network
Pros: IP control, picture, picture, and picture!
Cons: Complicated menu system. Not that intuitive in my opinion.
Have had SONY TVs since they first began selling them in the USA and have never been disappointed.
Pros: Outstanding picture and easy to program
This TV is fantastic. My wife originally told me that I was crazy for buying a 65 inch 4k TV. She humbly consented her folly after I got it on the wall. The upscaling is amazing. Even the non-HD channels look great, not that I watch non-HD shows, but my kids do on the stations like NickJr. I did initially waver and worry about my choice of Sony vs. Samsung from most of the reviews below. My final push to Sony was my affinity to the PS4. This TV was easy to setup out of the box and works seamlessly with my new Denon receiver. In fact if I turn my receiver off the "Smart" TV knows to use its own speakers for the TV sound. I would disagree that this TV is Smart. I would have to call it a genius. I stream the Netflix through the Denon's wireless, but this TV seamlessly connected to the wifi and could easily also play my Netflix. I have no regrets buying this TV! If you are reading this post, stop fantasizing about wonderful picture quality and order it already.
Pros: Picture quality, ease of setup
Cons: ugly camera on the top.
This TV does nothing less than impress! The picture clarity is incredible. The colors go together well, where not one over powers the other. The samsung TV's were second to this and when i viewed those while deciding, they had overpowering colors. Find a store that will show the same picture on multiple TV's to help you decide and that's why I bought this.
Pros: Clarity, color, brightness, apps, TV guide, etc.
Cons: I couldn't afford the 70"
For the past six months I have researched all of the 65 inch televisions. I own Sony and Samsung 40 inch TV's. I wanted to replace my ten year old wall mounted 46 inch Sony Bravia. After reviewing and "hands on" viewing all of the manufactured 65 inch televisions I deceided on the 4K 65 inch Sony. The price had dropped and the similar 4K with exposed speakers was too contempory and a lot more money. Love the set! The color is speculation and the upgraded movies images look great. At this moment my grandchildren are watching Cirque DuSoliel in 3D. THEY LOVE IT!
Pros: -Great picture -4K with auto upgraded images of 1080 and non HD images. -Smart TV Hub -Sony product
Cons: -Still pricey but cheaper than going to the newest movie theaters. The movie and snacks can add up to seventy five dollars and more. -My wife thinks it is too big! The FedEx delivery man told her that all of the wives had say this to him whenever he delivers one.
Awesome picture . from 50 ft.
The picture quality and clarity is amazing. The set up was quite easy and simple to understand. I set it up with all the components within minutes, including setting up the WiFi.
Pros: Great Picture and easy set up
Cons: Wish the remote would take on more of a universal remote.
I have previously tried LG 9300 and Samsung 8550 at my home, so I have a pretty good idea how this Sony TV compares to others. To be honest, the best picture quality goes to Samsung 8550, its blacks and contrast are absolutely unbeatable. LG has a picture quality comparable to Sony, but slightly better up-scaling engine and best of all User Interface and Apps, including software response times. I chose Sony because I own Sony AV Receiver and Blu Ray and wanted a seamless integration. I am not disappointed, it works well with other Sony gear. The picture quality is quite good, not best, but you will not be disappointed. My concern, was the apps, because my kids use it a lot. I have to say, the apps interface although not modern looking (such as LG) works excellent and there is no lag or a long boot up time as some people report. I read a lot about how 4k technology doesn't make sense yet, and let me tell you, after I watched 4K set, I could not go back to regular HD set. The up-scaling works very well and there is a very distinct visible improvement to your viewing experience.
Pros: Easy setup, good integration with other Sony gear
Cons: Black levels, overall picture quality
Good quality tv
Pros: Easy setup, great picture quality
Sales team was very informative and knowledgeable. Product arrived by ups delivered into the house fast and safely. It's a big screen recommend buying best wall bracket to support it.
Pros: Sleek lines Easy to use
Cons: None yet
Well I dont normally make big purchases like this, but after going back and looking at all the reviews it came down to the Samsung and this one. Make a long story short and after reading and talking to alot of folks...the choice was "clear". I went with the Sony. Funny thing is my brother n law just purchased the Samsung curve. We live 4 doors from one another and lets just say.... hes thinking about returning and getting this one! Setup and connecting was easy and all the features and apps were easy to use and setup....versus the Samsung. SO make a smart choice, if you're going to buy one of these items.... go ahead and put it towards the Sony. You wont be disappointed. Last is the 3-D.... I am not a fan of this, but after watching the technology in 3-D that's on this TV... I'm now a fan! Love it and the kids like it as well. Like that fact that you dont have to put battery's in the glasses cause the technology is built into the TV. I will say that the 3-D is much better than the Samsung as well from the screen clarity, 3-D technology and the fact you dont need battery's just to get the glasses to work. Did I mention I was very happy with my purchase! :)
Pros: Ease of setup Picture clarity 3-D Technology Simple to navigate around Can connect to smart phone User friendly
Stunning color and contrast. Upscaling is great and 4K from Netflix is quite impressive.
Pros: Color quality, contrast and resolution.
I purchased this TV from Crutchfield because I wanted a large, well-rounded 4K TV that would play everything thrown at it. I opened up the box and mounted it on the stand and was pretty much immediately disappointed. I calibrated it basically by eyeballing it because I couldn't find anything online and don't have the Disney WOW Blu-ray. Firstly, the backlight had some issues. There's significant flashlighting around the whole set, but in one area it's especially bad. On the bottom left corner of the set, there is a gap between the LCD and the bezel that really allows the LEDs to flashlight. It's really apparent when there are dark scenes or you're watching a movie with anything more than a 1:85.1 aspect ratio. I decided to watch some 2D content from Netflix using the TV app. The 4K content that they've included looks gorgeous. YouTube also has quite a bit of 4K content to view too. I popped in a Blu-ray and it also looked magnificent. Then onto some PS4 games. I played some Dragon Age: Inquistion and Destiny, and was quite impressed with how well the upscaling was. Onto 3D and the major snag! I tried watching Bolt 3D on my PS4 and could only suffer through 2 minutes. It was really jittery and made my head hurt. I thought maybe it was the movie and player, so I hooked up my Sony BDP-5200 and had the same issues with Gravity. The blur and jitter were too much. The forums all say that the issue lies with the TV's 3D processor. I'm trading this set for an LG 65UB9500.
Pros: Plays 4K content well and upscales 2D content with ease.
Cons: 3D left me nauseous and there are some serious flashlighting issues with the backlight.
I was going to go with another manufacture. But with more research, I went with Sony. So happy that I did.The 1080p is very clear. I haven't tried 4k yet but cant wait! The sound could be a little better but who cares because the most of us will hook it up to surround anyway.
Pros: Reliability, Quality, Crisp, natural color
I purchased the T.V. from Crutchfield, and did not have a chance to even open the box for almost 60 days. I finally got the time to pull it out of the box, and hook it up. My reaction......WOW!!!!!!! What a picture. Even my wife, who claims that she can't tell the difference between regular and high def, said WOW. The Sony home theater system that I purchased at the same time makes it all that much better. The Sony PlayStation app, and the fact that this T.V. is in my man cave will cause problems between my grandson, my wife, and I as to who gets to do what. I am very satisfied, and still playing with all of the new features. We have a Sony 55inch 1080 High def T.V. in the family room, but, this one has the better picture by far.
Pros: Outstanding picture quality, Very pleased with the set.
Cons: None yet.
I removed the carton from the TV so it was resting on the bottom padding in order to add the stand. Easy... slipped right into place and secured. My wife & I lifted it onto the entertainment center. Set up was simple although I have owned smart TVs and a home theater system for a long time. Plugged in the HDMI, Ethernet and power.. easy. So from start to streaming Utube 4K videos was 20 minutes. If you are on the fence... don't be, buy the 4K. The picture is obviously better with 4K content. Some movies (off HBO/cable) are amazing, others are HD quality, depends on the source and tour content provider. I figured... great picture, some upside on a number of sources but... I am now good for the future. Glad I went 4K. You must have a home theater.. with the 5.1 system, it makes it sooo much better.
Pros: Crutchfield...credits for future purchases with reward points makes my receiver upgrade really cheap.
Cons: I hate spending a lot of money before I buy, after... it is fine.
Well I got this TV in a few days ago and got it set up fairly quickly. The picture on this TV is absolutely incredible and it doesn't matter where the picture is coming from. I did find out that you want the 4K Blu Ray player to go with the 4K TV to get the great quality results that you expect from this TV especially in 3D mode. I've since added a 4K Denon receiver that makes switching imputes a lot easier. Everyone that has seen the picture on this TV is blown away by how sharp and vivid the picture and colors are! This is my first Sony TV and I am not disappointed one little bit!
Pros: Picture quality and colors are off the chart!
Cons: Set up directions leave a bit to be desired.
...because she thought a man was walking up the stairs. The TV is in front of the railing and it made it look like a guy was walking up the stairs from where she was in the kitchen. Incredible picture, football is like you are on the field, absolutely amazing! It has a minimal border edge showing, that I think adds to the overall effect.
Pros: incredible picture, Sony engineering, thin profile and edge.
Cons: Made wife scream :-)
I have just purchased this TV and received it in record time to my home. It took very little time to set this TV up and get it running. From the first I have seen an incredible difference in viewing quality. I have owned a Sony Vega flat screen tube TV then an LG Plasma and next a Mitshubushi DLP 60 inch HD and now the Sony XBR-65X850B 4K/3D HDTV. The tech is moving closer to true to life viewing. This TV has an awesome picture and the 4K up-scaling during normal program viewing not a 4K content is great. Yes there is the soap opera effect but the clarity is incredible. I don't mind that one bit. The picture in HD is so clear you can see the pours of the skin. I bought the Sony 6400 BlueRay 4K player to compliment the package. I put a non-BlueRay DVD into the player and the up-scaling by both the TV and the player made the HD DVD look great. The manual is not great but if you have a little common sense and can play a while you will get the picture you want. I do suggest you set the TV on VIVID and shut off the light sensor. The picture will then pop right our at you. As far as the passive simulated 3D effect. I love it! It is really cool. Passive does reduce the resolution a bit but because of the TV's bright clarity it really doesn't matter much. Crutchfield's sales and customer support were on the mark with the package they sold me. I just wish I could have afforded the 65x950B set but this one at the price is outstanding. So far so good.
Pros: 4K Up-scaling, 3D effect. ease of operation, outstanding picture.
Cons: manual not user friendly. Some aspects of set up are not clear.
This is the fourth Sony in my home and it just keeps getting better! The picture quality on this 4K is unbelievably crisp and sharp. Can't wait to view a Bluray on this tv. Installation and setup was a breeze. I highly recommend this model.
Pros: Fantastic color and sharpness. Easy setup and installation.
For entertainment on my frequent business trips I hang out in the big box stores and admire their TVs. After considerable research, I purchased this model a month ago. My research led me to believe that Sony and Samsung were the leading brands. A knowledgeable salesman told me he believed that between the two Sony was better at upscaling low resolution content. I studied the curved screens but could not discern any benefit. In side by side comparisons I did see a noticeable picture improvement going from the 850, to 900, to 950 series models, but because I could not walk up to a Sony TV and identify the series by screen quality I did not think it was worth the premium. (By the way, the "B" at the end of the model name indicates that it can stream 4k content from a service like Netflix. The earlier 'A' models could not.) I also compared 1080p and 4k resolution from the same 11-foot viewing distance which I have in my apartment. In spite of other's assertions, I really could tell the difference at that distance, and more importantly I could randomly walk up to a Sony TV and distinguish 4k from 1080p. Now that I have had it for month, I agree that the screen is stunning. Only because I am looking for it, I can occasionally see some artifacting when watching Star Trek from Netflix, but it is not disturbing. The TV offers an overwhelming selection of video, audio and internet applications, which I will never have the time to explore individually. I found the few I like.
Pros: Great Screen
Excellent color & contrast.
Pros: Easy to operate! , Love the the sharpness and the true color. Very Pleased with the purchase!!!
The best xrb-65x850b tv out there
Pros: The best picture and color. It has the best brightness and contrast. It makes even the old movies look like new movies. Sony 4k tv is the best picture 3d is unreal.
Cons: When on audio system, volume control on tv remote needs to be variable to adjust volume on audio system.
You can't go wrong purchasing this television! Outstanding picture and quality! Bluray movies are fantastic and sports so life like, you feel like you are actually there. Why buy a ticket when you always have the best seat in the stadium at home in your favorite chair. I highly recommend this product! Money well spent.
Pros: Outstanding picture quality and clarity. Has everything I was looking for in a top of the line big screen TV. Two remotes, easy operation, adjustments and set up. Many features including 4K upgrading and 3D glasses ( 2 pair)
This is my second XBR model from Sony, and I have to say it is absolutely worth it to step up to this model line. The picture quality is very good for regular HD tv, but you need to see 1080p or higher to truly appreciate what this tv is capable of. Netflix 'SuperHD' and 4K look outstanding! Colors are true and the picture is very smooth. First shipment arrived damaged, but Crutchfield immediately sent me out a replacement. Outstanding customer service as usual!
Pros: Picture Quality Simple interface Streams flawlessly from Netflix/Amazon/etc 4K upscaling looks good for regular tv viewing
Cons: Touchpad remote? I guess I don't get it - The standard remote works just fine, and while the touchpad remote is kind of a novelty, it feels like it's ancient technology when compared to what we are used to with tablets and smart phones.
Not yet operational as yet; first unit defective at installation; still awaiting replacement.
WOW! Unbelievable picture. This is my third Sony XBR but first 4K. The picture is worth the money.
Pros: Competitive Crutchfield price, free shipping and support.
Spectacular picture. Realism, color, and sense of depth perception (w/o 3D) is phenomenal. Automatically recognizes other Sony equipment and allows one remote control. Menu interface a little clunky, but once you get used to it, its fine. Product handling and delivery from Crutchfield was exemplary. TV arrived on time in great shape. Hook-up was straight forward.
Pros: Excellent picture. Beautiful set. Easy delivery and setup.
Cons: Menu interface could be improved.
I previously owned a 60" rear projection HD TV and was a little sceptical of the new 4k TVs. Since I've purchased and installed my new Sony 4k TV, the visuals are nothing short of breath taking. I truly didn't expect it to be this good. Call me stunned.
Pros: Picture quality, flexibility, connectivity and ease of use.
Cons: The TV remote, even thoughit controls my set top box while powered on there doesn't seem to be a way to isolate just the box. It needs to be turned on seperately.
Sony has the best 4k package, the TV and the media player FMP-X10, other manufacturers only rely on Netflix for the 4k content
Pros: excellent video quality
This is a great TV. Well designed great set of speakers for a flat panel design. I pre ordered this beauty and Crutchfield answered all my questions and concerns very professionally. Perfect picture out of the box. Many features!
Pros: Its a Sony!

Hard-to-reproduce reds, aqua blues, and emerald greens are displayed beautifully, so landscapes and seascapes look more vivid. Faces look better, too, with natural skin tones. MotionFlow XR 240 Technology: Sony's MotionFlow XR 240 technology feature a precise backlight control that is synchronized with the liquid crystal movement from frame-to-frame creating clearer, sharper moving images. MotionFlow XR 240 combines 120 frames-per-second with the TV's advanced LED backlight system to simulate a 240 Hz effect. You can select between various settings.
Automatic Intelligence: The TV's built-in Light Sensor automatically adjusts the picture brightness based on the amount of light in the room. As a result, you can enjoy automatic customized picture brightness and save energy without lifting a finger. The televisions Advance Contrast Enhancer (ACE) automatically adjusts backlight and contrast to the most suitable setting judging from the brightness of the screen. This setting is especially effective for dark scenes, and will increase the contrast distinction for the darker picture scenes. The ACE can be set to High, Medium, Low, or Off.
Video Inputs: The Sony XBR-X850B series TV is equipped with HDMI (2.0), Component, and Composite video inputs. A back cover has to be removed to access these video inputs.
Note: The TV has built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) and Digital Cable (QAM) tuners with an RF-coaxial input, so you don't need a separate set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV or unencrypted Digital Cable signals.
24pTrue Cinema (24p Input Capability): Many movies are filmed at 24 frames per second (fps) and prime time TV programs are video taped at 24p. Seizing on an opportunity, some studios are taking a purist approach and encoding high definition video content such as Blu-ray Disc in 24p. Sony wisely takes advantage of this by including 24p input capability via HDMI on this television producing images that are smooth and natural looking.
MHL Compatible: The HDMI 2 and 4 input are designed for the connection of select mobile phones and other portable electronic devices using the new MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) standard. Simply plug your MHL compatible smartphone into the TV's HDMI 2 or 4 (MHL) input using the HDMI cable that is included with your mobile phone. MHL allows you to display full 1080p video and still images on the Sony TV from your mobile smartphone. The TV's IR remote can be used to control basic playback functions (such as Play/Pause, Stop, Fast Forward/Rewind, and Menu navigation). Your MHL compliant device will also charge while connected to the TV's HDMI 2 or 4 input. To find MHL-certified devices, go to www.mhlconsortium.org.
Passive 3D Technology (w/ glasses): The Sony XBR-X850B series LED-LCD TV uses the same Passive 3D technology used to power 3D films in today's movie theaters. The Sony LED-LCD TV creates stereoscopic three-dimensional images using polarized glasses (2 pairs included), making it ideal for 3D movies and games. This passive 3D technology offers wider viewing angles, no "flicker-effect", and less eye strain.
Note: The Sony LED-LCD TV can display in 3D via 3D broadcasting or when the TV is connected to a compatible device, such as a 3D-ready Blu-ray player with 3D content. The TV must be connected to your 3D source via HDMI (v.1.4) and you must wear the included passive 3D glasses in order to see these images in 3D (three-dimensional) format.
Wide Mode: The Wide Mode feature allows you to select the screen display which fits the current video image and TV screen best. Based on the original signal source, you may see black bars around the picture or just on the both sides of the screen. Sometimes you will see the picture fill the full screen.
|Wide Mode||16:9 Original Source||4:3 Original Source|
|Wide Zoom||Enlarges the picture to fill the screen with minimal distortion.||Enlarges the center portion of the 4:3 picture proportionately, while the left and right edges of the screen are stretched to fill the screen.|
|Normal||Displays a 4:3 picture in its original aspect ratio when the original source is 4:3 (available for 480i or 480p sources).||Displays the 4:3 picture in its original size with black bars at the left and right sides to fill the screen (available for 480i or 480p sources).|
|Full||Displays the picture at its original size.||Stretches the entire 4:3 picture horizontally only to fill the screen.|
|Zoom||Enlarges the picture proportionately, both vertically and horizontally.||Enlarges the entire 4:3 picture proportionately to fill the screen (useful for watching Letterbox movies).|
Automatically changes screen settings base upon incoming video signal and content.

PIP & PAP: The Sony LED-LCD TV offers PIP (picture in picture) and PAP (picture and picture).
ARC (Audio Return Channel): The Audio Return Channel in the television's HDMI 1 input enables the TV, via a single HDMI cable, to send audio data "upstream" to an A/V receiver; increasing user flexibility and eliminating the need for any separate S/PDIF audio connection. This feature allows audio to be sent from the television to your A/V receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio/video to the television. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to the TV. ARC allows audio from the TV tuner, Network connection, inserted USB device, HDMI inputs, or any analog connected device to be heard through your ARC compatible AV receiver via the television's HDMI ARC input. The audio from the TV's tuner, network connection, and USB input can pass as Dolby Digital or 2ch PCM. HDMI and analog connected devices will be output as 2ch PCM only.
Note: Both the television and the receiver must support ARC for this function to work properly. When connecting an A/V receiver that is compatible with Audio Return Channel (ARC), connect it to the TV's HDMI IN 1 port. If connecting a system that is incompatible Audio Return Channel (ARC), an additional audio connection via Digital Audio Out (Optical) is necessary.
Audio Outputs: The Sony HDTV offers analog and digital audio outputs. A back cover has to be removed to access these audio outputs.
S-Force Front Surround: S-FORCE Front Surround provides a virtual surround experience made possible using just two front speakers. S-Force Front Surround simulates 5.1ch surround sound, with an enlarged sweet spot that everyone in the room can enjoy. You can active a 3D mode to generate a virtual three-dimensional sound effect to match your 3D video.

4K Network Streaming: This Ultra-HD TV even offers "HEVC" decoding, which means it'll be able to display 4K content from online movie & TV show providers (like Netflix, UltraFlix, or Sony Video Unlimited). Netflix 4K streaming can be done directly from the TV; you will need the Sony 4K media player (sold separately) to view 4K content from Sony Video Unlimited. 4K network streaming requires a network speed of 15Mbps or greater. A wired Ethernet connection is recommended over a wireless WiFi connection for better performance. If you desire a WiFi connection, then use a dual-band Gigabit wireless-N router for 4K streaming. Make sure the Sony television has the latest software/firmware updates installed.

There is no specification for "input lag" but, like most Sony models, this TV offers a "Game" picture mode that defeats much of the processing and reduces the input lag to the bare minimum. Hope that helps! [ Ryan Nov 11, 2015 ] Staff
According to the DirecTv web site options for customers with non-directTv ready 4k tvs to view Directv's content later this year. [ MICHAEL W Mar 30, 2015 ]
The TV is simply the device in which the 4k source is viewed on, which translates into having enough pixels to display the 4k content. you only need the hardware to push the content to the TV. So it is actually DirectTv's responsibility to provide the receivers capable of transcoding the 4k content and in turn outputting the signal via HDMI. [ DOUGLAS Mar 30, 2015 ]
It is RVU "enabled" but not certified. Not being a movie watcher, have not had an opportunity to test that capability. BTW, this is an awesome TV. [ DAVID Mar 30, 2015 ]
I have not tried 3D on this set [ MEAD Mar 10, 2015 ]
I don't think 3d is a feature on this model [ GREG A Mar 05, 2015 ]
I really have not used the 3D on this set. I prefer watching sports, not a lot of movies, I will try it more now that you've asked. Sorry, I can't tell you more. [ Alonzo Mar 03, 2015 ]
I have watched one 3d movie. It was awesome! There was no problem at all. I just followed the guide on tv. It was flawless! [ LONNIE Jan 17, 2015 ]
I have not watched any 3D content on this TV; only 'simulated' 3D (from standard 2D content). I have found the simulated 3D to be surprisingly good; especially when watching high quality content, like NFL football on Fox HD. [ Bryce Jan 16, 2015 ]
The 3D looks great to me, I've had no problems at all when viewing 3D on this set. [ Jay Jan 14, 2015 ]
Just follow the directions exactly and you should have no problem, However if you want to activate Pandora radio this will drive you crazy. I have been trying to get it activated ever since I bought this TV. No luck so far..............Garry [ GARRY T Jan 14, 2015 ]
Don't know about firmware updates. But since this is a passive 3D instead of an active system does not seem clear at times, but is ok I also have a 3D Active projector and this also happens there . Have even had this problem at movie theater. Don't think its a TV problem but problem with movie. I am happy with TV Beautiful 4K pricture also you can keep glasses from movie theater and use them at home. [ TOMAS A Jan 14, 2015 ]
After updating tv and Sony 3d blue ray player firm ware via Internet no problem [ ROSS Jan 14, 2015 ]
Have not watched any 3D movies yet. But TV turn on one time and no picture appear - just a black screen. Turned it off and back on again and same thing. Ended up unplugging TV from power source, plug back in and turn on TV and worked again. As of late, noticed the picture takes a good 5-10 seconds to appear after TV is on. Not sure if this will lead to a major problem down the line. Just had TV for less than a month now and somewhat dissappointed. [ Ngai Jan 14, 2015 ]
I have not used the 3D feature on this television yet. Sorry I couldn't help. [ PADRAIG Jan 14, 2015 ]
Brian, when I first got this TV I had the same problem. You have to use a 4K 3D BluRay player to get it up to the 4K speed. I do see a shimmer once in awhile but not vey often. I went with the Sony 4K player and the picture is amazing on this fabulous TV. Good luck. [ Glenn Jan 14, 2015 ]
I have watched Avatar on this set. I wouldn't say it is hard to watch, but there seems to be a fluidity of sorts with the movement. So when characters are in motion they're not very distinct(best way I can describe it). I don't feel like it's a problem. It still is an amazing picture in 3d HD. I have an LG 3d tv and it is not 3d HD and I don't see this. It is not a deal breaker. This tv rocks and I am very happy with it. [ Tricia Jan 14, 2015 ]
I never saw any difference in my colors on motion, football looks great to me. [ JIMMY Jan 05, 2015 ]
I have watched many different sporting broadcasts since purchasing this TV. I have been extremely impressed with this TV's performance. I have not experienced any pixcelation with red or any other colors. I have viewed content from Charter/Comcast cable, Netflix, and YouTube. [ GLENN Jan 03, 2015 ]
I have had this TV now for several months, and I haven't noticed any problems with the refresh rate and the color red. This is the best TV I have ever owned. I will give it one criticism though that needs to be known before you get this TV. There is no fine tuning the colors with this set. You get a generic "color" control. My previous Samsung allowed me to really calibrate color using a professional calibration disc. If you truly care about 100% accurate colors skip this set. Out of the box this TV is great though. I don't use the enhanced refresh rate setting on this TV. I utilize the "football mode" when watching sports which automatically adjusts the modes. [ Mike Jan 02, 2015 ]
Thanks! :) [ GeezingInVA Jan 02, 2015 ]
I haven't had any problems. [ Chet Jan 02, 2015 ]
Ive had this tv for over a month and I have not one thing negative to say. The colors and motion in action are truly amazing! Tvs have come along way in 7 years. I replaced an 8 year sony 52" with this set and Im completely satisfied. [ MATTHEW Jan 01, 2015 ]
I have had this XBR-65X850B Sony for around 50 days and I am happy with picture rendering quality and 4K up scaling engine. I like you, have many Sony TVs in my house. Last year after I purchased their 70" 1080 unit, I was so disappointed that I returned the TV and decided not to buy Sony anymore, due to very poor quality of rendering, viewing angle and very slow refresh. I was in market to buy a 4K TV and my choices were the new Vizio P series or 70" or LG OLED that I saw at CEDIA show in Denver. One of my friends at Sony told me I should look at this new XBR-65X850B, Sony is back making high quality TV's only and no more cheap stuffs! So, I played with this exact TV for a few hours at my friends house and I was satisfied to go back to Sony. This is my first time buying any thing from Crutchfield. I really was very surprised and satisfied with the quality of their service! [ David Jan 01, 2015 ]
Thanks, Gary! :) [ GeezingInVA Jan 01, 2015 ]
I've owned the TV for a week or so watching throughout the holidays. Have not noticed any picture motion issues on my set. The picture quality is excellent and the blacks black. [ GARY Jan 01, 2015 ]
Michael F., My experience with this panel is that lighting is even and balanced from edge to edge. We have watched programming during the day but mostly in the evenings and dark scenes appear evenly dark, again, edge to edge. I feel that this panel is a great value. Glenn L. [ GLENN Nov 08, 2014 ]
Thanks Susanne, I too will be moving from at least a 5 year old Samsung. [ Michael Nov 07, 2014 ]
The only time I notice the frame-dimming effect is during power-on. Normal viewing has no issues. Blacks are great when settings are set with CNET recommended values. Only concern is the reflectivity of the screen, more than I expected in lighted room. I don't know what the 900 is like. [ philip Nov 07, 2014 ]
I was able to compare the 850B to the local-dimming models at the local showroom, and found that both produce outstanding pictures. While local-dimming does have the advantage in slightly better contrast, I thought the difference between the two was small and not worth the rather large difference in price; and I also think the 850B has a better looking cabinet design - the narrow (3/8") bezel / frame is outstanding. My 65X850B's LCD panel is completely free of "flashlighting" and the screen uniformity is quite good, but I suspect a very small percentage of X850B panels do exhibit flashlighting, based on what others have said. (This shouldn't be a deal-breaker because, unless it's severe, flashlighting is almost impossible to detect during normal scenes and hard to detect in very dark scenes.) Dark scenes are quite good. Black levels are impressively deep. And the edge-lit X850B's do not exhibit blooming - the small light "fog" around white objects on a black field - that is inherent in full-array local-dimming backlighting models. But your eyes and sensibilities are different from mine, and you should try to compare the two backlight styles against one another in a showroom. [ Mac Nov 07, 2014 ]
I bought this TV in Sept and absolutely love it. What I like best is the brightness of the screen. I had a 5 year old Samsung and didn't realize how dark it was. [ SUSANNE Nov 07, 2014 ]
We absolutely love this TV. The picture definition is outstanding. I neither get flashlights nor do I feel that the dark scenes are too intense. It may have to do with setting it right for your specific environment. Hope that help. [ Michele Nov 07, 2014 ]
Sorry, but to be honest, I haven't really paid too much attention to those details. That being said...there's been nothing I've noticed in regards to the picture being too dim or too bright. Whether it's tv shows, sports or movies, I have absolutely no complaints thus far. Day or night, the picture is great. [ Mark Nov 07, 2014 ]
Michael, I don't see any flashlight effect. Installed TV today - early but so far picture is very good. I would surmise the 900B is even better but it's more expensive. Could spend that extra money on a Sonos Playbar. Dr. Z [ DAVID Nov 07, 2014 ]
I had no issues watching sports or action movies with this TV. I highly recommend the XBR65X850B [ Carlos Sep 27, 2014 ]
Samsung and Sony offers up to 120 only. The human eye can not see better than 100hz. In my opinion the Sony xbr 65x850b (which is 60hz ) looks better than the Samsung when doing frame interpolation from a 30hz signal. [ Cody Sep 24, 2014 ]
As a qualifier, I am far from well versed regarding the video technology employed in SONY 4K televisions or the other leading brands. To answer your question, I have not noticed any tails or ghosts or other concerns on my SONY XBR-65X850B television. I do watch baseball and football where the moving ball would show a problem if there was one. You should ask about SONY's Motionflow technology and what the different numbers mean. This set has Motionflow 240 which my understanding is that it is meant to mimic a television with 240 hz refresh rate. The 900 series and other more expensive versions have higher numbers. [ James K. Sep 23, 2014 ]
Kevin, I have had NO issues with sports programming. I have watched a couple F1 broadcasts and have been very impressed with the picture. Last weekend I also watched Rush (Ron Howards movie about Niki Lauda and James Hunt in their pursuit of a F1 championship) very sharp and clear picture. When watching baseball and football games you feel as if you are sitting in the stands. Highly recommend this model based on performance and price/value. [ GLENN Sep 23, 2014 ]
