Sony's 4K TVs keep getting better

Last year, Sony's X930D 4K TVs were favorites with our customers and with A/V experts around the world. Their new X930E series offers improvements worth talking about. Higher peak brightness means a more vivid picture, especially with HDR content. And more powerful video processing ensures a cleaner picture with all sources.

4K and HDR complete the picture

What 4K does for picture detail, HDR (High Dynamic Range) does for contrast and color. It may surprise you, but current video standards are based on old-school tube TVs with low brightness capabilities. The latest HDR-equipped TVs, like the XBR-65X930E, can display greater contrast and a wider color spectrum. The combination makes pictures pop like you've never seen before.

The XBR-65X930E's Slim Backlight Drive™ design uses a grid light control system to deliver more precisely localized lighting than previous edge-lit systems. By dimming some areas of the screen and boosting others, Sony's X-tended Dynamic Range PRO™ technology produces a brightness range that's much wider than what we're used to with conventional LED-backlit TVs.

Sony's video processing makes everything look its best

What elevates the XBR-65X930E above competing TVs is Sony's unmatched video processing. Their X1™ Extreme engine packs 40% more processing muscle than last year's model. It tackles two tasks: reducing the compression noise common in streamed video and lower-resolution sources, and upscaling every source to near 4K/HDR quality. Picture quality with 4K streamed content and Ultra HD Blu-ray is spectacular, but you don't need a 4K source to be wowed by this TV.

Not just smart TV, Android TV — easy access to endless entertainment

The XBR-65X930E's built-in Android operating system lets you easily log in to your Google ID to access a huge collection of apps, games and content from Google Play. And the Google Cast feature (now called Chromecast built-in) lets you stream movies, pictures, and TV shows from your iOS or Android-based phone, or from a laptop. The remote's built-in microphone makes it easy to search for a particular movie or actor just by saying the name.

I love this tv and the sound bar. The picture is so realistic it's better than going to the ball park. Watching movies is awesome and with the sound bar the voices are clear along with plenty of base. It only took about a half hour to unpack and setup. Pairing the sound bar was very simple.

    Great TV but Heavy

Crutchfield customer from Charlton, MA on 10/18/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I chose this TV over many others I considered for two reasons: Sound quality and stand size. It probably seems strange that picture quality was not a big factor, but that's because after looking at a lot of models on display in local stores, I could not tell much difference among the 4k HDR models and so I went on faith that the picture quality would be very good, and I was right. The sound is truly superb and that is a huge deal for me. The stand size was a practical consideration based on my furnishing and the fact that it was not possible to wall mount the unit where I wanted it. There are some negatives. One is the weight. It was not easy to manage getting it into the house and setting it up. But if I had someone to help, it would not have been much of a problem. The other is really poor documentation. The users guide is pretty much useless - there is not even instructions for assembling the TV onto the base. And I had to get help from Crutchfield Tech services to figure out that the voice recognition feature of remote has to be initialized from an obscure place in the settings menu. But the bottom line is that this is a great TV and I love it.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I debated long & hard over which model to pick before going with this one & I am EXTREMELY happy with the picture quality & actually having a Smart TV (instead of relying on the Blu-Ray for app content). I think the blacks are great & I don't have issues with white flaring or edge distortion, but I might be the only human on the planet that may have gone too big. By all scales, graphs, and models, I should have the right size for my space & distance, but now my living room feels more like a movie theater, & I'm not sure that's a good thing. I don't want to see when an actor's stunt double is on screen, or when really bad special effects show up...something I never noticed on my old, 13 yr old 42" Sony Bravia, and now I see it everywhere! But I like it has a component connection & a "sort of" composite for my older devices, I just wish it didn't weight so much (at least I don't have to worry about burglars taking off with it!).

Pros: Realistic picture and great sound

    Cons: None

Great 4K TV with a realistic price.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was agonizing over this Sony and a 65 inch Samsung. I was looking for a new 4K for my retirement man cave. I compared both units side by side and to my unsophisticated eye the pictures were comparable. The deciding factor was conversations with several sales rep and a satellite TV installer. There were too many horror stories about the Samsung stand alone bar for making the TV input connections. Please note that I own earlier models of both Sony and Samsung. The price differential for a 65 inch gave the purchase decision to Sony. At this point I am delighted with the Sony and it's features.

Pros: Easy set up with a superb picture. Another plus was a component input for my Wii.

    Cons: Remote is basic.

Great picture, very good upscaling, plenty of apps

Gary from Pine Hill, NJ on 4/23/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Decided on purchasing this TV after doing a lot of on line research. I am more than happy with this TV. The setup is very easy, but you do need two people to put it place.. I have it on a TV stand. The picture is everything I expected. The upscaling of 720p TV shows is very impressive. I purchased a 4K Blueray player and I can't wait to get my first 4K Blueray disc to see what it looks like. Regular Blueray disc look great. The 4K content on Netflix looks great as well. There are plenty of apps and they are easy to use. I have a surround sound system so I can not comment on the speakers in the TV. I should also say that this is the second TV that I have purchased through Crutchfield and I am completely satisfied with the entire process (purchase to delivery).

Pros: Picture quality upscaling of 720p broadcasts easy setup Nice styling

    Cons: Haven't encountered any.

    A magnificent HDR TV

Jay from Seattle, WA on 4/11/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I spent many months researching specs online and looking at various 2017 TVs in brick-and-mortar stores, and in the end it came down to either this or an OLED. The X930E won out for me both for its remarkable peak brightness for impressive HDR performance, and because I had no worries about permanent image retention with LCD, as some people I know have experienced with some OLED panels. Now that I have been using this TV for 4 months, I can say it is one of the best purchases I have ever made. HDR gaming on my PS4 Pro looks stunning and UHD Blu Rays do too. After all the time I spend wanting a truly high-end home theatre screen, I'm very satisfied with this one in every way. If I had to pick one negative, it's that its amazing picture becomes a little less so if you're viewing it from an extreme angle, but when I have 4 people watching a movie on a couch, everyone is still close enough to the center to enjoy a great picture. In short, this is the best TV I've ever owned, and having looked at the 2018 LCDs out now, nothing there surpasses this. I'm a very satisfied customer.

Pros: Amazing picture, fantastic contrast with dazzling peak brightness and deep blacks, good smart TV app selection, beautifully made, a pleasure to use for movies and games

Cons: Not as wide a viewing angle as an OLED

Outstanding Sony TV Second to None

Sammy from Erie, PA on 4/8/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This television is simply outstanding. Blows away nearly all of the competition in my opinion. There are a few things that Sony could do to improve the process when you purchase one (such as a pre-assembled stand and better instructions regarding the panels and hook-ups on the back), but in the areas that really matter it scores an A-plus in every one. The picture is bright, clear, sharp and the blacks are truly blacks while the whites reach a point where they can almost be too bright to look at. All colors in between are accurate, such as the grass being green when you watch golf (and not lime green which I recently observed on a friend's new TV from another brand. Overall, I highly recommend this set if it is within your budget.

Pros: Lifelike picture with precise colors. Improved sound over previous Sony LED TVs. Black levels are superb for an LCD/LED set.

Cons: Instructions need to be improved. Stand can be a bit of a chore to assemble.

You will be happy you bought this model!

David from Owensboro, KY on 3/26/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Remarkable TV! Great picture that really gets a reaction from people who have watched programs or sports with me. Worth the extra money for this model. The sound is even better than most, although I would at least add a soundbar to go with the awesome picture.

Good Entry Level High End TV

Ace from Bangor, ME on 3/22/2018

Let me start by saying I really like this TV. It's very nice and the picture is great. Primarily we use it for movies, games, and OTA television. The upscaling works very good, and for the most part the picture and colors are amazing especially for HDR content. In HDR games on the PS4 I don't see a lot of input lag in game mode, at least not enough to be bothersome. This panel is really great. However, there are some well known and glaring deficiencies that you should be okay with going in. The haloing created from the backlights being in a column in the middle tv is pretty bad on dark content even with biased lighting . Normal friends and my wife haven't noticed, but if you're picky about image quality it will drive you nuts. If you're within the optimal viewing cone of +/- 45 degrees from center than its not as bad but still noticeable. Its not as noticeable in TV,Movies, and games in 16:9. The HDMI ports are another issue. Though there are a number of them on the TV, only two support HDR Input. Which fine, whatever most people won't have more than 2 (or even 1) HDR displaying device. However one of the HDR ports is also the only port available for ARC. So if you're using ARC to send sound to say an outdated receiver that doesn't have 4k then you're out of luck and only now have 1 HDR capable HDMI port available. The OTA HD tuner is a blurrier picture than my 2014 sony xbr 65in, pretty disappointed there. The remote doesn't have real buttons.

Pros: Amazing upscaling One of the best at HDR Pictures Very Slim and aesthetically pleasing Out of the box color modes are pretty good without a lot of fiddling

Cons: Only two HDMI ports that accept an HDR Input For a slim TV its extremely heavy Excellent colors fade quickly looking at an angle thats not in the 45 to -45 degree range Backlight Haloing is very noticeable on dark content, even with bias lighting OTA HD Tuner isn't great Android TV is Meh

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great picture on this Sony XBR-65930E, and easy to set up. I was weighing out the pros and cons between Sony's screen technology and an LG OLED screen. But for the roughly 35% difference in price, I'm happy with the decision to go Sony. And Crutchfield's quick and painless delivery, along with immediate responses from their technical staff, made this purchase an easy decision.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My first opinion of the TV was Wow why is this thing so heavy! Once on the wall my second opinion of the TV was why do they put HDMI inputs in the most challenging place to actually get everything plugged in. My last opinion of the TV once turned on was Wow what a great picture! The picture itself makes this a 5 star rating and makes up for the weight and usual input challenges. I have only enjoyed the TV for about a month now and I do not regret my decision to go with an LCD rather the OLED.

    Pros: Great Picture

    Cons: Weight

Amazing pictures and great TV set.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first SMART TV. I have been hesitated to buy between Sony and Samsung QLED Q7F due to worrying about the reviews of the slowness of Android on Sony TV. However, I think Android OS responds fairly fast and easy enough to set up and navigate. It took me a little over 1 hour to set up and updated the software. I have Direct TV (not 4K) and pictures look fine. I watch a lot of YouTube and Netflix movies, it looks very good in general, and 4K movies look amazing. I also watched in the dark with no lighting and the pictures still looked good. The up scaling works very well with non-4K and HD, even with lower resolutions. There is a little slow to switch between YouTube videos (1-2 seconds lag) but it is not that bad. This TV is very bright. There is some blooming with very bright objects here and there (if you pay attention to it), but I have no issues or disturbed because of it. The TV sound is very good. I do not use the TV for gaming so cannot provide feedbacks. My room is about 20'x17'and the TV looks quite bigger than when I saw it at local store (I felt it is almost as big as 75"at the store). It seemed about right size for my room. However, based on the reviews at Crutchfield and others, Sony xbr75x940e should provide at least the same picture quality and brightness, and even better on the black contrast level. If you can afford Sony xbr75x940e, you should go for it. Thank you the Crutchfield's team for helping, providing top-notch services!

Pros: Amazing pictures and very well built product.

    Cons: Very heavy!

Best picture for the best value!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After much research, we decided to replace our 17 year old Mitsubishi TV that was still working. They all looked great in showrooms but finally chose this Sony based on long time reputation and bought from Crutchfield based on their reviews, price, and selection. We could not be happier with this product. Outstanding picture, easy connections, and sound is not bad either. We have it set so the picture adjusts to the lighting in the room although one can choose what type of picture they want. We would definitely recommend this TV and look forward to years of enjoyment.

Pros: Build quality, picture color and clarity, elegant exterior with stand.

Cons: Heavier than comparable units so will need two strong people to unpack.

    Great Picture

Ken from Fayetteville, TN on 2/18/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This set has one of the most beautiful pictures I've ever seen. Where it really shows off is with 4k HDR! It is a light cannon and the blacks are inky and the motion is great. The picture does degrade a bit off to the sides. You also may see blooming in really bright objects against really black backgrounds. I did have a power issue with the set and Crutchfield has been great to try to resolve the problem.

Pros: Great Picture Excellent HDR Inky blacks

    Cons: Power Issue

    Great picture

Milton from Fort Worth, TX on 2/1/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Sony XBR-65X930E has an absolutely beautiful picture. The contrast ratio and color accuracy is excellent and it was easy to adjust the picture settings. The Sony 930E is a very attractive TV and I had it professionally wall mounted using the Sanus VLT6 mount, as recommended by Wade. The 930E is very heavy for a 65" class TV, so a sturdy TV stand or good wall mount is a must. I have a Marantz 7.1 home theater receiver and Polk speakers (both also from Crutchfield), but the 930E has an impressive internal sound system. I am very happy with the Sony XBR-65X930E. One last note, I had originally purchased the base model 55" LG OLED (not from Crutchfield) but I returned it a week later. I found that this LG OLED consistently oversaturated the colors, even with considerable adjustment. Also, the LG arrived with burn in which was easy to correct, but didn't instill confidence in my choice. The skin tones in this LG had a consistent red cast. Maybe if I had a lot more money to spend on a 65" TV I would have tried the Sony XBR-65A1E OLED.

Pros: Beautiful picture and contrast ratio with deep blacks. Great internal speakers.

    Cons: Heavy!

    Quality 4K TV.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

60"Samsung plasma went south after only 30mths. It was a lower end model and a display model at local store so at less than $600 I didn't lose to much sleep. Was planning on a new 75" model to celebrate moving into a new house but decided to go with a higher end 65". Mainly watch using Amazon Fire, but did buy Blade Runner 2049 BluRay 4K to get an idea of the definition. Looks good no matter what the source. Easy set up, spent more time updating the Harmony remote. Price wise Sony is competitive with not only Samsung/LG but even Vizio so really the choice was a no brainer.

Pros: Good quality at competitive price.

    Cons: Non.

Terrific screen with great upscaling. Many reviews don't like that backlight can bleed into screen but it only happens occasionally mostly on cinema borders.. Its a nit pick in my view. This TV has Sonys best processing engines which will likely improve with the ability to update.

    Awesome picture.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very nice TV. Rich colors and black blacks. This is a very heavy tv and I was afraid to hang it as my wall is weak. That being said the stand is awesome and instructions on installing it were great. Hides the wires and is very sturdy. The tv has a slight lean to the rear. Thought it would be an issue but I don't even notice it. Sits low so I had to put a shelf over it for my center channel speaker. Think most sound bars will be ok though. We don't use many smart features but the the picture is great. Gaming on this is awesome. Very sharp. Love it. Great service from Crutchfield as usual.

Pros: Crisp clear picture. Vivid colors.

    Cons: Very heavy.

Great picture, greta price, great service

Bought it December 12 from crutchfield. Free shipping and a 60 price guarantee. Was going back and forth with a LG Oled but with the kids and I playing videos games and the blaring brightness we bought the Sony. There is some light bleed here and there but you don't notice if lights are on and it's a small price to pay for this beautiful tv

    Pros: The TV. It's beautiful

Cons: Some light bleed with lights off. Still better with video games then the LG Oled

    Magnificent TV!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This TV is absolutely amazing! The colors are sharp and bright, the blacks are inky and deep. The Android UI is fast but not very intuitive. Bonus: Was able to install Kodi directly onto the TV and I now no longer need my amazon firestick! There is a bit of light bloom if there is a scene of bright white next to complete blackness, but you will only notice this if you are looking for it. The remote issue is real, it is clicky and annoyingly cheap, but I am getting used to it. Crutchfield delivered 5 days faster than promised!!!

Pros: Black Blacks Vivid Colors Gorgeous HDR and 4k Kodi installed directly to TV

Cons: A little bit of light bloom Cheap remote

    Amazing picture quality.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So, all last year I debated between going with a top of the line Sony LED, or a LG OLED. In the fall I pulled the trigger on a LG OLED. Now as far as picture quality goes, and black levels, that OLED was an amazing TV. But it was a piece of junk. I ordered it in October and it was broken by November. I ordered a replacement with Crutchfield and they were nice enough to send another free of charge. And well.....that one arrived and broke in two weeks. Long story short, I decided LG doesn't need to be in my house ever again. Crutchfield was nice enough to give me credit towards a new TV and I heard the reviews about this one being the brightest HDR set you can find in 2017. So I took a shot at it. And this TV is amazing to look at. The HDR on this TV is a lot more noticeable than the OLED, because it is the brightest TV last year. When I say colors and lighting pop, they pop. No the black levels do not come close to OLED, but they are definitely a solid 9/10. It handles motion very well. The input lag on it for gaming is acceptable. This TV is without flaws. It does have a little bit of blooming. This may be an issue for certain people, but it isn't bad enough to me. And this TV is heavy....extremely heavy. It is a whopping 110 lbs. You're not going to be able to put this TV together by yourself. I cannot rate the sound because I have a Dolby Atmos set up and don't need the TV speakers. So far I am happy with my purchase. Hopefully this one doesn't break like the LG lol.

Pros: Picture quality, HDR is top of the line, brightest TV I've ever seen

Cons: This TV weighs too @*() much!

AWESOME...bought the 930D last year and this new model blows it away. Very satisfied with my purchase and would recommend anyone looking for an awesome tv,less expensive then OLEDs, this is the one. Looked at the 900E but went with this model cause it is future proof vs the 900E.

Pros: Deep Blacks, amazing color and picture

After first thinking I wanted an LG OLED I decided not to get it because of the issues they are having with image retention, burned in screens, bent screens and the poor customer service related to these issues. So after doing much research I decided to go with the Sony XBR65X930E and could not be any happier. It is everything my research said it was. I did consider the Sony 65" Z9D but could not justify the price difference. Very happy with the service and shipping from Crutchfield.

This is an amazing TV. The picture quality is great. This tv is a light engine. One of the brightest screens I've seen. 4K HDR is awe inspiring and the X1 Extreme chip does wonders at upscaling 1080 and up sources. Some pixelation or artifacts show up in less than sources but not bad at all. Very watchable.

Pros: Great picture. Amazing color right out of the box, very little tuning needed. Deep blacks, bright detailed whites.

Cons: Can have a small amount of blooming in black bars. Waiting on Dolby Vision update promised by Sony. Tv is Heavy! 80#'s on wall.

I have been shopping for this particular TV for some time. I saw the Black Friday special and decided it was time to pull the trigger..price was fair. Setup was easy and painless and the picture quality is amazing. Also, I've watched a few 4K-UHD shows on Netflix and hard to believe the picture could get better but it did. Crutchfield made ordering on line easy and painless and the TV arrived as scheduled. This was my 1st Crutchfield purchase but will not be my last.. I highly recommend this TV and Crutchfield..

Excellent picture, easy hook up and great Sony quality. Have had many XBR Sony TV's over the years. Many extra's that older sets did not have. Incredible 4K picture, just wish there were more 4K sources for entertainment. Love the wire management system. I no longer see any wires from the back of my TV and the covers help keep the back looking great.

Pros: Great picture Easy to set up Many connection sites available

Cons: Heavy - need two people to set up. Wish the interface was set up for Apple vs Google.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My new TV arrived promptly. Setup was simple and painless. The picture quality is excellent even with HD content. I watched Spiderman Homecoming in 4k (UHD) and the picture was phenomenal There were no muddy blacks (movies) and no motion blur during football. Support is excellent. The help manual isn't that great, so I had to call support regarding a problem I was having with the remote. It had worked fine the day before and I didn't want to rerun the initial setup and customize apps/settings all over again. Within 10 minutes they had me working again. Thanks Crutchfield!

Pros: Easy setup Detected my DirectTV Genie with no issues

Cons: It will take a while to learn all the remote control features. The help manuals aren't much help.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far very pleased with the performance of the TV. This is replacing a high-end Panasonic Plasma TV purchased about 8 years ago. The richness of color versus the replaced TV (moved to an adjoining room for easy comparison) is dramatic. Brightness levels are also better. Haven't noticed much of a difference in black levels which the Panasonic handled very well. We have watched multiple sport events (mostly football) since setting up and have not noticed any motion blur. Have watch content distributed on Xfinity's X1 platform, both IP based (e.g. Netflix) and digital HD channels. X1 box is connected to Yamaha receiver via HDMI and then receiver to TV via HDMI. Picture is excellent. Connected via WiFi to Xfinity Blast! service via XB3 Gateway. OTT content directly through TV (e.g. You Tube, Netflix, WatchESPN) all displayed very well. Added a couple OTT apps easily through google play. Was able to "cast" BigTen ToGo volleyball match originally being watched on iPad to TV seamlessly. Knew I was going to be able to cast Android phone based content to TV but was very pleasantly surprised to be able to cast the iPad. Not sure how the iPad knew about the Sony in the house. Must have autodetected it on same WiFi network but it was super simple. Only negative marks I would give are on packaging/design. There are no handholds on the TV and removing it from the packaging base was a bit difficult. On a positive note, I did like the taping of the instructions to the top lid of the box

Pros: Color Brightness Integration with other technology WiFi Apps available Cord management

Cons: No hand-holds for easy unpacking, attaching of stand, or placement

The ordering on line was simple and delivery right on time as promised. This is my third purchase through Crutchfield (certainly not my last) and I have been quite pleased with each experience. I am looking forward to experiencing 4K sources soon. I highly recommend this product and Crutchfield.

As a photographer, color matters to me. This is the best tv I've ever owned, bright, bold color with HD content but with 4K HDR content (built-in Amazon streaming or UHD Blu-ray) WOW. I haven't experienced Dolby Vision content yet but the other content is so much better than anything I've seen before I almost wonder is it needed. Even SD content doesn't look half bad thanks to this TV's top end Sony processor - the cheapest TV with the top end processor.

Pros: - Truly amazing with 4K content - Better than expected sound

Cons: - Expensive, yet worth it

Glad I bought this over the Samsung.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my third Sony TV, so you might guess I am a tad prejudiced toward Sony products, and I am. I have looked at LG and Samsung and found them to be fine products. Any TV is only as good as the source of its input, and viewing Sony, Samsung, and LG side by side with the same signal source, the difference in picture quality was not enough to sway me from sticking with Sony. Plus all my peripherals are Sony products. It is a fine TV that lives up to it reviews. TV technology like computer technology is constantly getting better. I would buy the latest and best I can afford, and I know I will get many years of fine service from a good product.

Pros: It is a quality product that lives up to its reputation.

Cons: In a few years I am probably going to covet the latest technological iterations in TV receivers.

I have got to say, I have not purchased this TV yet. I still own a 50" Pioneer Kuro Elite PRO 110 1080P Plasma and it is still an amazing TV, No complaints. Have been shopping the last few years for something larger though. Have spent hours at friends homes and I go to Best Buy weekly and spend an hour or two comparing different TV Tech and brands including LG OLED, Every model by Sony, LG & Samsung and although the OLED sets are impressive, I can honestly say that the new Sony XBR930E has a picture that eats the OLED for lunch. Compared side by side I would take the new Sony any day of the week hands down! The picture is noticeably more vibrant and brighter and the blacks are amazing. Sony really has a winner here & this is most definitely the set that I will be replacing my Kuro Plasma with. Bravo Sony. Just wish the Awesome side speakers from last years X940C were available as an add on option to purchase.

Pros: Stellar picture quality, no blooming, vibrant, bright, Amazing color. Honestly never thought that I would buy an LED TV.

Cons: A little pricey, but I paid $5,000 for my 50" Pioneer Kuro Plasma 8 years ago. So for the picture quality & the technology its worth it.

    Video Features

4K HDR: For the ultimate in picture quality, this TV pairs the brilliance of 4K clarity with the brightness, color, and detail of High Dynamic Range (HDR). Combined with 4K Ultra HD resolution, HDR video content delivers exceptional detail, color and contrast, with a far wider range of brightness than other video formats. The result is the most lifelike picture TVs have ever been able to create, with brilliant highlights and fine detail.

    • Ultra 4K Resolution: See more on TV than ever before with over 8 million individual pixels (3,840 x 2,160) compared to about 2 million (1,920 x 1,080) on your 1080p HDTV. Advanced picture processing also ensures that every single pixel displays images with superb brightness and authentic detail. It's the highest resolution picture Sony has ever produced on a TV.
    • HDR (High Dynamic Range): HDR (High Dynamic Range) reproduces a greater dynamic range of luminosity or brightness levels, bringing greater contrast & wider color spectrum to the screen. This increased contrast reveals the subtle nuances of the image, from detailed blacks and shadows to the brightest whites and colors, plus greater depth. Previously hidden areas of dark shadow and sunlight are now full of clarity and detail. The Sony TV supports three HDR formats - including HDR10 which is the most widely used format and is installed from the factory, HLG (Hybrid-Log Gamma) which is designed for over-the-air broadcast and requires a firmware update that is currently available, and Dolby Vision which is a dynamic HDR format that requires a firmware update that is currently available.
      • HDR 10: HDR 10 is an open standard and currently the most popular HDR format on the market. It supports 10-bit color and 1,000 nits. It uses static metadata at the start of a movie to tell the receiver and your TV that the video content is encoded using HDR.
      • HLG: HLG (Hybrid-Log Gamma) is primarily designed for live video feed and over-the-air broadcasts. It uses no pre-encoded metadata and is backwards compatible with SDR. HLG's native compatibility allows much of today's existing SDR infrastructure to be re-used for HDR in the future.
      • Dolby Vision: Unlike HDR 10 which contains static metadata and HLG which uses not metadata, Dolby Vision adjusts brightness, color, and contrast automatically for each scene. Dynamic metadata carries information that maps every image to your TV's display capabilities, so you see more of what the content creator intended.

Note: Dolby Vision compatibility is currently only available through the TV's network streaming apps (such as Netflix, Amazon, etc.). An additional firmware update (no ETA) is required for Dolby Vision compatibility through the TV's HDMI inputs.

4K X-Reality Pro Upscaler: Sony's 4K X-Reality Pro Upscaler enhances Ultra-HD, HD, and SD images by analyzing and refining images with beautifully natural detail and astounding color. This 4K television upscales your favorite TV shows, DVD and Blu-ray movies, even video-on-demand content, and smartphone videos to Ultra-HD quality. This unique 4K X-Reality PRO picture processing technology upscales every pixel for remarkable clarity. Advanced noise reduction techniques and a special pattern database ensure every scene is full of lifelike detail. One database is used to clean the picture, reducing on-screen noise; the other is used to upscale the resolution, improving clarity; while another database improves color, brightness, and contrast. These three powerful image improvement databases work together, dynamically improving pixels in real time. Each database has tens of thousands of references, amassed from Sony's experience creating content for TV and movies over the years.

    • Upscaling Database: Unique to Sony, 4K X-Reality PRO picture processing upscales every pixel for remarkable clarity. Pixels across multiple frames are analyzed and images sharpened and refined in real time. You will immediately see the detail appear in faces and skin tones.
    • Pattern Database: With 4K X-Reality PRO, patterns in images are compared with patterns stored in a unique database to find the best hue, saturation, and brightness for each pixel. Sony uses the knowledge gained from developing and filming blockbuster movies and TV shows to deliver supremely lifelike detail in everything you watch.
    • Noise Reduction Database: Compressed noise is identified by the database, which includes "before and after" data on what a picture should look like and removes the compressed picture noise. A variety of noise reduction techniques are then used by 4K X-Reality PRO to sharpen and refine images. You'll immediately see how scenes become clearer, smoother, and more natural.

4K HDR Processor X1 Extreme: The 4K HDR Processor X1 Extreme with Object-based HDR remaster and Super Bit Mapping 4K HDR technology gives pure colors at higher brightness levels for truly natural pictures. Made to enhance the latest generation of 4K HDR pictures, the 4K HDR Processor X1 Extreme brings reality to every scene. With 40% more real-time image processing than our renowned 4K Processor X1, it delivers unprecedented picture quality for everything you watch, upscaling content from any source nearer to 4K.

    • Super Bit Mapping 4K HDR: Super Bit Mapping 4K HDR creates a smoother, more natural picture by minimizing its color banding. With 14-bit powerful signal processing, it breaks up the solid bands of color of an 8-bit or 10-bit source, up-converting to 14-bit equivalent gradation, with 64x more color levels. It delivers graceful reproduction of faces, sunsets, and other areas of subtle color.
    • Object-Based HDR Remaster: By analyzing the objects in each scene individually, Object-based HDR remaster optimizes and enhances color and contrast. It brings everything you watch closer to the quality of HDR. Dark elements get darker, bright elements brighter, and everything in between is more accurately lit, for realism in every scene never-before-possible on our TVs. You'll see contours on mountains, hidden textures on flowers, depth in clouds, and wildlife has the contrast and color of nature, for a more natural and realistic picture on screen.

Slim Backlight Drive+: Sony's innovative Slim Backlight Drive+ with double-edge LED panel directs light where it's needed, boosting dimming precision for higher peak brightness, contrast, and realism. It delivers astounding image quality from an incredibly slim design. The Slim Backlight Drive+ has two layers of light guide plates, allowing precise local dimming control to improve overall contrast. As a result, you get intense bright whites, deep rich blacks, plus vibrant color and detail.

X-tended Dynamic Range PRO 10x: With extraordinary precision in backlight control, X-tended Dynamic Range PRO makes darker areas darker and brighter scenes brighter, revitalizing every scene with the widest range of brightness possible. This unique backlighting algorithm faithfully reproduces a far wider brightness range than a conventional LED-LCD TV with brighter peaks and deeper, more revealing shadow detail and blacks. By precisely balancing the light output across the screen, dimming some areas and boosting others, X-tended Dynamic Range PRO reveals a brightness range 10x greater than a conventional LED-LCD TV. When combined with a 4K HDR signal, you'll experience even greater brilliance in every scene as it increases the quality of HDR with more vibrant colors

TRILUMINOS Display: Unique to Sony, a TRILUMINOS Display with its specially developed backlight selectively maps colors across a wider gamut, ensuring subtle colors do not become oversaturated and unnatural. You'll enjoy vivid, authentic images that evoke the emotion in every scene. The more pencils you have to draw an image, the more vibrant and lifelike it becomes. TRILUMINOS Display works in the same way, using a wider color spectrum than a conventional LED-LCD display. A TRILUMINOS Display excels at reproducing reds, greens, and blues; colors that are notoriously difficult for TVs to display accurately. It also displays skin tones beautifully, thanks to its extensive color palette and precise gradation.

MotionFlow XR 960 Technology: Enjoy smooth and sharp details even in fast-moving sequences with Motionflow XR 960. Sony's MotionFlow XR 960 technology feature a precise backlight control that is synchronized with the liquid crystal movement from frame-to-frame creating clearer, sharper moving images. MotionFlow XR 960 combines 120 frames-per-second with the TV's advanced LED backlight system to simulate a 960 Hz effect. This innovative technology creates and inserts extra frames between the original ones and then compares key visual factors on successive frames, then calculates the split second of missing action in the sequences. MotionFlow XR 960 provides smooth and precise detail during fast-action scenes for fast action movies and sports by reducing blur caused by quick camera movements, enhancing image sharpness, and overall creating a clearer picture. You can select between various settings - Standard, Smooth, Clear, True Cinema (24fps), and Custom.

Video Inputs: The Sony Ultra-HD TV is equipped with HDMI 2.0a, Component, and Composite video inputs. A back cover has to be removed to access these video inputs.

    • HDMI 2.0a: The Ultra-HD TV is fitted with four HDMI 2.0a inputs to connect your Ultra-HD/HDR and HD sources; such as Ultra Blu-ray, Blu-ray, Satellite/Cable and Playstation. In addition, any HDMI input can be used to connect a PC to this TV. The HDMI inputs will accept 4K, 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals. HDMI inputs 2 & 3 will do 4K (60Hz), while HDMI inputs 1 & 4 will only support 4K (30/24Hz)
      • HDCP 2.2: HDCP 2.2 is supported by all of the TV's HDMI inputs. HDCP 2.2 is short for "High bandwidth Digital Content Protection" and is used for 4K video copyright protection for compatibility with Ultra HD Blu-ray players and 4K Satellite/Cable providers.
      • 4:4:4 Color Subsampling: All four HDMI inputs will support up to 4:4:4 chroma subsampling for full color data rendering of 4K video (30/60fps). 4:2:2 (30/60fps) and 4:2:0 (60fps) are also supported by all HDMI inputs. With 4:4:4 color, luminance (brightness) and chroma (color) are sampled at the same rate, resulting in an RGB color palette as big as the video sampling rate for a video image with more total colors, plus greater color accuracy and detail.
    • Component/Composite: There is one combination analog video input that can be used as a component or composite video input; it shares a single stereo RCA audio input. As a component video input, it will accept 1080p (60Hz), 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals. As a composite video input, it will support 480i video signals only. There is also a 3.5mm AV input for connection of an analog audio/video component.
Note: The TV has built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) and Clear QAM tuners with an RF-coaxial input, so you don't need a separate set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV or unencrypted Digital Cable signals.

Picture Adjustments: The TV offers a variety of screen, picture, and video adjustments to maximize image quality.

    • Screen Modes: The Screen Modes feature allows you to select the screen display which fits the current video image and TV screen best. Choose from Wide Zoom, Normal, Full, Zoom, or Auto Wide. Based on the original signal source, you may see black bars around the picture or just on the both sides of the screen. Sometimes you will see the picture fill the full screen.
    • Picture Modes: You can select one of the following picture modes - Standard, Vivid, Cinema (Pro/Home), Sports, Animation, and Custom.
    • Advanced Video Settings: The Advanced Video Settings menu offers further adjustment of the TV's video image.
      • Brightness: You can increase or decrease the brightness of an image by adjusting the TV's Brightness, Contrast, Gamma (adjusts light/dark balance), Black Level, and Black Adjust (enhances black areas).
      • Color: You can tailor the color of an image by adjusting the TV's Color, Hue, Color Temperature (white balance), Color Space (sets color reproduction range), or Live Color (produces vivid colors).
      • Clarity: You can improve the clarity of an image by adjusting the TV's Sharpness, Reality Creation (increases clarity), Resolution (increases detail), and Noise reduction (removes noise).
      • Motion: Activate Sony's Motionflow technology to reduce motion blur and judder. CineMotion provides improved picture movement and reduces picture blur and graininess for film-based content, like Blu-ray & DVD.

Light Sensor & Advanced Contrast Enhancer (ACE): The TV's built-in Light Sensor automatically adjusts the picture brightness based on the amount of light in the room. As a result, you can enjoy automatic customized picture brightness and save energy without lifting a finger. The televisions Advance Contrast Enhancer (ACE) automatically adjusts backlight and contrast to the most suitable setting judging from the brightness of the screen. This setting is especially effective for dark scenes, and will increase the contrast distinction for the darker picture scenes.

Live Color Technology: Powered by an image processor using an algorithm specially developed by Sony, Live Color is able to reproduce incredibly vivid colors on screen. With four user-adjustable settings available (High/Medium/Low/Off), you can choose just how vivid you want your images to be. Whether it's a brilliant blue sky or a bright red rose, everything stands out so much more with Live Color.

Dynamic Contrast Enhancer: The Dynamic Contrast Enhancer optimizes the range of brightness frame-by-frame according to what's happening on screen to reproduce deeper blacks, brighter whites, and more video color.

24pTrue Cinema (24p Input Capability): Many movies are filmed at 24 frames per second (fps) and prime time TV programs are video taped at 24p. Seizing on an opportunity, some studios are taking a purist approach and encoding high definition video content such as Blu-ray Disc in 24p. Sony wisely takes advantage of this by including 24p input capability via HDMI on this television producing images that are smooth and natural looking.

PIP (Picture-in-Picture): Through an over-the-network firmware update, the TV will support PIP (Picture-in-Picture). This feature lets you watch the TV's over-the-air tuner in a small window on-screen, while viewing an Android TV app (like Netflix or Amazon).

    Audio Features

Front-Firing 3-Way Speaker System: The Sony TV features a front-firing 3-way speaker system for clearer audio, so you feel more of the moment with dynamic, immersive sound. This front-facing speaker system projects voices and dialog with more clarity than conventional downward-firing speakers.

ARC (Audio Return Channel): The Audio Return Channel within the television's HDMI 3 input enables the TV, via a single HDMI cable, to send audio data "upstream" to an A/V receiver; increasing user flexibility and eliminating the need for any separate S/PDIF audio connection. This feature allows audio to be sent from the television to your A/V receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio/video to the television. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to the TV. ARC allows audio from the TV tuner, Network connection, inserted USB device, HDMI inputs, or any analog connected device to be heard through your ARC compatible AV receiver via the television's HDMI ARC input.

    • The audio from the TV's tuner, HDMI inputs, USB ports, and Android TV apps can pass as Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital, DTS, or 2ch PCM.
    • Analog connected & DLNA compliant devices will be output audio at 2ch PCM only.

Note: Both the television and the receiver must support ARC for this function to work properly. When connecting an AV receiver that is compatible with Audio Return Channel (ARC), connect it to the TV's HDMI 3 input. If connecting a system that is incompatible Audio Return Channel (ARC), an additional audio connection via Digital Audio Out (Optical) is necessary.

Audio Outputs: The Sony Ultra-HD TV offers analog and digital audio outputs, as well as Bluetooth headphone pairing (firmware update required).

    • Digital Audio (Dolby Digital/DTS): The optical digital output terminal will output Dolby Digital/DTS (when available) or 2 channel PCM. The digital optical output terminal only sends an audio signal in Dolby Digital/DTS when receiving Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound from a digital broadcast channel through the tuner, network apps, HDMI inputs, and USB ports on the TV. The optical digital audio output will only output in 2ch stereo from sources connected to the TV via RCA.
    • Headphone/Analog Output: The TV's 3.5mm analog output can be used to connect a set of headphones or as an audio output to connect your home theater receiver or soundbar system. You will need a minijack-to-RCA adapter (sold separately) to make a stereo RCA connection between the television and your AV receiver. The TV's analog audio output terminal will output 2ch audio from any of the television's source inputs. You can set the TV's analog output to Fixed or Variable. S-Force Front Surround: S-Force Front Surround mimics the way the brain correlates sound sources to create proper volume, time lag, and sound wave spectrum; using only left and right speaker channels. By naturally emulating three-dimensional sound fields, you'll enjoy rich, high-fidelity audio across a wider listening area.

ClearAudio+: ClearAudio+ fine-tunes TV sound for an immersive experience that seems to surround you. Hear music, dialog, and surround effects with greater clarity and separation, whatever you're watching.

Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE): Low-resolution Internet video and other heavily compressed audio files don't always sound so great. A large amount of information gets thrown away when digital audio is compressed. With Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE) technology, lost frequency components (especially high frequencies) are restored for natural sound with a more spacious feel.

Clear Phase: Sony uses a powerful computer model to analyze and compensate for inaccuracies in speaker response. It does this by "sampling" the speaker frequency with higher precision. This information is fed back to cancel out any peaks or dips in the speaker's natural response; resulting in pure, natural audio with smooth, even reproduction of all frequencies.

EQ: The TV offers four EQ preset sound modes - Standard, Cinema, Music, and Live Football. The TV is also equipped with a 7-band EQ (125Hz, 250Hz, 500Hz, 1kHz, 2kHz, 4kHz, 8kHz). You can adjust the level of each band between -12 to +12 dB.

Voice Zoom & Night Mode: The Voice Zoom feature makes voices clearer by lowering background sound. Night mode provides a clear sound at a low volume levels.

TV Position: The speakers of this TV provide different sound images according to how you position the television. You can select between "Table-Top Stand" or "Wall Mount" to provide the best sound quality based on the television's placement.
