Our take on the Sony KDL-70R550A

It came as a surprise to us that a TV as massive as Sony's 70" KDL-70R550A could still manage to look so graceful. Even if your room is on the large side, this impressive TV will fill it with beautifully bright, clear images in 2D or 3D. You may not be that interested in 3D right now, but that's OK — this TV delivers an awesome 2D picture, too.

Big-time, big-screen picture quality

When you get to screens in this size range, video processing quality becomes more important than ever, and Sony's advanced processing continues to be among the very best. Everything you watch on this TV will look as crisp, clear, and colorful as possible, whether it's Blu-ray movies or YouTube™ clips. Sony's Motionflow™ XR 240 technology ensures crisp, clear motion even when you're watching fast-action material like sports or action movies.

Watching more on the web

Sony Entertainment Network More and more people moving beyond cable and satellite TV and turning to the web for day-to-day viewing. The KDL-70R550A has built-in apps for accessing the Sony Entertainment Network, home to thousands of movies, shows, games and more. You can also stream HD movies instantly from Netflix® and Amazon Instant Video, or listen to Pandora® Internet radio through the TV. Built-in Wi-Fi® lets you enjoy entertainment pulled from the web or a PC on your home network without connecting an Ethernet cable. Wirelessly streamed HD video can look surprisingly good.

New ways to connect with and control your TV

It's not surprising that the KDL-70R550A has four HDMI inputs for connecting all of your high-def sources. But here's something different: In addition to standard Wi-Fi operation, Sony's Wi-Fi Direct Mode completely bypasses your wireless router. The next time your friends want to share photos or videos from their smartphones, they can wirelessly "throw" the content straight to this TV. You can also do Wi-Fi mirroring if your smartphone is Miracast™ enabled.

Sony Bravia 70" LCD TV died within 2 years !!

Rich from Punta Gorda, FL on 9/19/2016

Sony's quality has really gone down hill. It worked great for 24 months, then a blank screen and the 5-red led indication. The TV Tech found that the LCD display was dead! Not Worth It. By the way, all of the components inside the TV, except the display, were made by Sharp, but these weren't the problem.

Pros: Great when purchased

Cons: Lifetime very disappointing for a TV at this price.

Awesome Sony TV..!!!

Sony is still the best

We had a Sony 55" set about 5 years ago and had to leave it behind when we moved. It was great. When we moved we bought a Samsung 55" and it's never been the same quality as our previous Sony. Now we purchased another Sony 70" as a present to ourselves. It's worth every bit of the cost . It's clarity and audio volume doesn't disappoint.

Pros: Clear picture and adequate clear audio.

Cons: Pricey but is worth it.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Our first large screen HD TV, replacing a '96 model 35" ProScan. The Sony is fantastic. It's hung securely on our living room wall by the Sanus XF 228. I was somewhat concerned about the 70" screen with the 120Hz refresh rate ... but I've watched several football games over broadcast signal and "action" movies with the Sony BluRay player (even 3d) and it's been excellent. I was amazed by the 3d thinking it was probably gimmicky ... it's not. A GREAT enhancement of the viewing experience, best with a dark room, however. The audio is adequate, but anyone in search of a set like this will undoubtedly be connecting to a surround sound receiver system ... which, via HDMI, it automatically detects. An "easter-egg" feature! We have a 14 year old Bose Acoustimass 10 (5.1 with powered sub). Still rocks the house. Now the dimension with the video makes "going to the movies" a true luxury item ... ie, not necessary. Lit room performance is very good. "off axis" viewing is very good. We do not have unrestricted high speed internet, so the Wireless LAN & Netflix streaming is a feature we still anticipate.

Pros: Brightness, definition, contrast, depth (3d), operation, installation

Cons: yet to find

Great TV - SONY thinks about the details

We have only had this TV for a week or so but it is fantastic. We love the 3D and smart tv things that SONY planned and added to this 70". We were going to go for a bigger TV but the features were not as good so we opted for this and really, really enjoy it.

Pros: Smart, Solid, SONY

Cons: I have not found a Con yet.....

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've only had it for about a week now, but I have experienced no issues. The picture is very crisp and fluid. I was a little nervous that I would want a 4K TV for a TV this size, but I haven't noticed any graininess.

Pros: Great picture, apps are easy to use, wireless was easy to set up

Cons: No complaints

70" SONY

Anonymous from Plano, TX on 11/20/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I like SONY so this 70" is an addition to 2-60" SONY's and several smaller SONY's. The picture is fine and the set up was easy. The problem I have experienced is that the set emits a very strong odor - decreasing over time - but it has been in service for over a week now and you can still smell the odor when you walk into the room. BUT, next time I will buy a 4K XBR model.

Timewarpone from Central California on 9/5/2013

I purchased this TV a few days ago and I must say that I am truly impressed!!! This is my first 3D TV. My first 3D movie was Avatar. It was like watching a different movie only way better. The passive 3D technology was the biggest reason for this purchase. I am an eyeglass wearer and I read to many negative reviews about the 3D active glasses. I was able to watch the whole (Avatar Movie 2-1/2 hours long then Cars 2 in 3D) without any issues at all. The included glasses are sturdy and light weight and easily fit over my eye glasses. I get my HD programming from DIRECTV. The HD images are absolutely stunning!!! I am a default kinda of guy so the only changes I made was to turn off the Light Sensor found in the "ECO" menu under settings and I also used the Monster Calibration video DVD with good results. I didn't toy around much with the internet capabilities because I already own an internet ready DVD/BD player which suits me just fine and a host of other devices that are internet ready. I was searching for months for information and reviews before purchasing this TV. The most reliable and comprehensive info came from the Crutchfield web site. They were truly instrumental in making my purchase a No Brainer!!

Pros: Everything!!!

Cons: Nothing So Far

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Perfect size TV for my setup. This replaces a Sony KDL52W4100 LCD from 2008 which is still a great TV, but has no internet options and was starting to look small in comparison to screen sizes available now. Was hoping Sony would come up with a 70" TV and bought this shortly after it became available. Wanted another Sony as I've never had a problem with the Sony brand. After upgrading to LCD flat panels 5 years ago I still had a few old Sony CRT sets that were well over 20 years old, had never needed repairs and were still working. Also wanted this set because I have a Sony receiver with Bravia Sync and like the convenience of that feature. Upgraded front speakers to Polk Audio RTi A7's and the center channel to Polk Audio's CSi A6 so can't comment on the built in TV speakers since I don't use them. The set is wall mounted on a very sturdy Sanus XF228 mount. Would have given the KDL-70R550A 5 stars, but am not quite sure why there is sometimes a problem accessing the internet features. Must admit I don't use them much and bought the TV primarily for DIRECTV/DVD viewing so overall I'm quite pleased with this purchase.

Pros: Excellent picture (recommend turning the light sensor off as the picture tends to flicker when it is on) Wireless internet easy to set up PIP function is useful to me and not available on many TVs

Cons: Many internet apps available, but not always accessible. Not sure that this is a fault of the TV - could also be a matter of wireless signal strength.

All Around Amazing!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is one of the best mid-level smart TVs that I've seen. So I bought it! And have not regretted it since. I was initially going to get a 55" or 60" but decided to go bigger for more of a near theater feeling. And wow! This tv is huge! Blu rays as well as DVDs look beautiful on this tv. After some setting adjustments Even standard definition channels from my cable provider look decent. I was afraid that some cable channels would look bad given that this tv would display them larger. But they don't look that bad at all. As far as 3D goes, using the up convert feature from 2D to 3D looks ok. 3D content seems to look much better on dedicated blu rays labeled 3D. The smart features are wonderful and aesthetically pleasing. There are many apps to please all entertainment needs. I have mine connected via Ethernet since its next to my router. Overall great tv that offers many features and large movie theater like size display. 5 Stars

Pros: Large 70" display. Great size for 3D Option for either wired or wireless Internet connection. Plethora of internet based applications. Lots of flexibility in settings and options to customize your picture.

Cons: Limited amount of inputs. (Only 4 hdmi and 1 hybrid component/composite). Would have been nice if there were at least 6 hdmi inputs. Light sensor: when enabled (and by default it is enabled) dims the picture to much In a moderate lit room. And in a dark room causes picture to intermittently go dark and bright. So I disabled this feature. It's found under home button. Then go to settings. Then go to eco. There you have the option to turn light sensor off or on.

Edge LED Backlight: The Sony Bravia KDL-R550A series TV utilizes edge LED backlighting for dynamic contrast, smooth motion performance, and energy savings inside a slim designed cabinet. This technology sharpens image contrast giving an amazingly crisp picture you can see. The edge LED backlight system also allows for a slimmer, sleeker design.

Clear Resolution Enhancer: Fine details and textures appear in whatever you're watching, even in flat areas. Powered by Sony's advanced noise reduction algorithm, this technology boosts image clarity with heightened contrast and depth.

MotionFlow XR 240: Sony's MotionFlow XR 240 technology combines 120 frames-per-second with an advanced backlight blinking system to simulate a 240 Hz effect. MotionFlow XR 240 provides smooth and precise detail during fast-action scenes for fast action movies and sports by reducing blur caused by quick camera movements, enhancing image sharpness, and overall creating a clearer picture. You can select between 3 settings - High, Standard, Off.

1080p Resolution: The Sony KDL-R550A series television has a HD native resolution of 1920 x 1080 (1080p).  All video signals from standard definition and high definition sources are displayed at 1920 x 1080. The Sony KDL-R550A series TV is equipped with HDMI, Component, and Composite video inputs.

  • 4 HDMI Inputs: The KDL-R550A series TV is fitted with four HDMI inputs to connect your high-definition sources; such as Blu-ray/DVD player, Satellite/Cable receiver, game system, and  AV receiver. In addition, any HDMI input can be used to connect a PC to this TV. The HDMI inputs will accept 1080p (60/24Hz), 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals.
  • Component Video Input: The component video input will accept 1080p (60Hz), 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals. If needed, the component video input can be used as a composite video (480i only) input instead.
Note: The TV has built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) and Digital Cable (QAM) tuners, so you don't need a separate set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV or unencrypted Digital Cable signals.

24pTrue Cinema (24p Input Capability): Many movies are filmed at 24 frames per second (fps) and prime time TV programs are video taped at 24p. Seizing on an opportunity, some studios are taking a purist approach and encoding high definition video content such as Blu-ray Disc in 24p. Sony wisely takes advantage of this by including 24p input capability via HDMI on this television producing images that are smooth and natural looking.

MHL Compatible: The HDMI 2 input is designed for the connection of select mobile phones and other portable electronic devices using the new MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) standard. Simply plug your MHL compatible smartphone into the TV's HDMI 2 (MHL) input using the HDMI cable that is included with your mobile phone. MHL allows you to display full 1080p video and still images on the Sony TV from your mobile smartphone. The TV's IR remote can be used to control basic playback functions (such as Play/Pause, Stop, Fast Forward/Rewind, and Menu navigation). Your MHL compliant device will also charge while connected to the TV's HDMI 2 input. To find MHL-certified devices, go to

Passive 3D Technology (w/ glasses): The Sony KDL-R550A series LED-LCD TV uses the same Passive 3D technology used to power 3D films in today's movie theaters. The Sony LED-LCD TV creates stereoscopic three-dimensional images using polarized glasses (4 pair included), making it ideal for 3D movies and games. This passive 3D technology offers wider viewing angles, no "flicker-effect", and less eye strain. To ensure that you can enjoy 3D any time you want, Sony has incorporated 2D-to-3D conversion, which allows you to watch your favorite 2D movies, TV programs, or games in virtual 3D. You can even adjust the depth of the 3D image to your personal preference.

Note: The Sony LED-LCD TV can display in 3D via 3D broadcasting or when the TV is connected to a compatible device, such as a 3D-ready Blu-ray player with 3D content. The TV must be connected to your 3D source via HDMI (v.1.4) and you must wear the included passive 3D glasses in order to see these images in 3D (three-dimensional) format.

Automatic Intelligence: The TV's built-in Light Sensor automatically adjusts the picture brightness based on the amount of light in the room. As a result, you can enjoy automatic customized picture brightness and save energy without lifting a finger. The televisions Advance Contrast Enhancer (ACE) automatically adjusts backlight and contrast to the most suitable setting judging from the brightness of the screen. This setting is especially effective for dark scenes, and will increase the contrast distinction for the darker picture scenes. The ACE can be set to High, Medium, Low, or Off.

Wide Mode: The Wide Mode feature allows you to select the screen display which fits the current video image and TV screen best. Based on the original signal source, you may see black bars around the picture or just on the both sides of the screen. Sometimes you will see the picture fill  the full screen.

Wide Mode 16:9 Original Source 4:3 Original Source
Wide Zoom Enlarges the picture to fill the screen with minimal distortion. Enlarges the center portion of the 4:3 picture proportionately, while the left and right edges of the screen are stretched to fill the screen.

  • Auto 1: Provides smoother picture movement that the original film-based content.
  • Auto 2: Displays film-based content with picture expression close to the original by applying a film-specific process.

PIP & PAP: The Sony LED-LCD TV offers PIP (picture in picture) and PAP (picture and picture).

  • PIP (Picture in Picture): Picture-in-Picture displays an image from a connected PC (via HDMI) in full-screen and a TV program or external analog input in an inset window. You can swap audio between the main and sub window. You can also change the channel of the sub window. You cannot view another HDMI source in the inset window.
  • PAP (Picture and Picture): This feature lets you watch two pictures simultaneously. You can view an image from the component video or HDMI inputs in the main window and a TV program or external analog input in the sub window. You can switch audio between the two images.

Audio Features

ARC (Audio Return Channel): The Audio Return Channel in HDMI 1.4 enables a TV, via a single HDMI cable, to send audio data "upstream" to an A/V receiver; increasing user flexibility and eliminating the need for any separate S/PDIF audio connection. This feature allows audio to be sent from the television to your A/V receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio/video to the television. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to the TV. ARC allows audio from the TV tuner, Network connection, inserted USB device, HDMI inputs, or any analog connected device to be heard through your ARC compatible AV receiver via the television's HDMI ARC input. The audio from the TV's tuner, network connection, and USB input can pass as Dolby Digital or 2ch PCM. HDMI and analog connected devices will be output as 2ch PCM only.

Note:  Both the television and the receiver must support ARC for this function to work properly. When connecting an A/V receiver that is compatible with Audio Return Channel (ARC), connect it to the TV's HDMI IN 1 port. If connecting a system that is incompatible Audio Return Channel (ARC), an additional audio connection via Digital Audio Out (Optical) is necessary.

Audio Outputs: The Sony HDTV offers analog and digital audio outputs.

  • Analog Output: The TV's 3.5mm analog audio output is used to connect your home theater receiver or soundbar system. You will need a minijack-to-RCA adapter (sold separately) to make a stereo RCA connection between the television and your AV receiver. The TV's analog audio output terminal will output 2ch audio from any of the television's source inputs. You can set the TV's analog output to Fixed or Variable.
  • Digital Audio Output: An optical digital output is provided to allow you to connect the unit to a surround processor. The TV's digital audio output terminal outputs a Dolby Digital or 2-channel down-mixed PCM signal for use with an external Dolby Digital decoder or other external audio system with an optical audio input. The TV's optical digital terminal will output audio from the television's antenna, HDMI, and RCA inputs. The digital optical output terminal only sends an audio signal in Dolby Digital when receiving Dolby Digital surround sound from the TV's built-in tuner, network connection, or connected USB device. The optical digital audio output will only output in 2ch stereo from sources connected to the TV via HDMI, or RCA.

Sound Modes: The TV offers five preset sound modes.

  • Standard: Optimizes sound quality for general content.
  • Music: Lets you experience dynamic and clear sound, like that of a concert.
  • Cinema: Optimizes surround sound for movies.
  • Game: Provides a broader soundstage for your video games.
  • Sports: Reproduces realistic sound, like that of a stadium.

Equalizer: The TV is equipped with a 7-band EQ (100Hz, 200Hz, 500Hz, 1kHz, 2kHz, 5kHz, 10kHz). You can adjust the level of each band between -12 to +12 dB.

Advanced Audio Settings: The TV offers additional audio adjustments to enhance the television's sound.

  • Sound Booster: The Sound Booster enhances both treble & bass in order to reproduce a more dynamic sound.
  • Clear Voice: Enhances clarity of spoken dialogue.
  • Volume Offset: Adjusts the volume level of the current input relative to other inputs.
  • Advanced Auto Volume: The Advanced Auto Volume function keeps the volume level constant across all programs and advertisements.

Sony Entertainment Network: Once the TV has been connected to your home network, you can have your favorite internet content delivered to the Sony LED-LCD TV screen via Bravia Internet Video, Opera TV Store, or the built-in web browser. You can stream movies, videos, music, and more with Bravia Internet Video; while the built-in web-browser lets you search on-line content by URL. The Opera TV Store lets you download additional apps. • Opera Internet Browser:  The built-in Opera Internet Browser allows you to access select web content through the Sony LED-LCD TV. Using the Opera Internet Browser, you gain access to and Gracenote Music Services. The built-in internet browser also allows you to enter URLs and do basic keyword searches, so you can browse other select websites (text-based only). The Opera Internet Browser is not a full search engine for the Internet and Web. For Internet audio/video/photo content, use Sony's Bravia Internet Video service. Use Monster Screen Clean or another dedicated flat screen cleaner, windex will eat the screen on this and most flat panels due to the material they are made of. Don't use windex or another abrasive cleaner unless they are gorilla glass or straight glass like a 52" Sony XBR I have, use a dedicated flat screen cleaner [ ANDREW  Mar 29, 2014 ]
The best way to clean your screen is NOT to clean it at all. Never put finger prints, or anything else near your KDL's screen. My screen is clean and looks great since the very first day I placed it up on its wall-mount. There is simply no reason why anyone should ever touch your KDL's screen. However, if you do need to clean your KDL's screen I would recommend using no chemicals, or cleaners. I would used an Ophthalmologist eye glass cloth, or a computer screen cleaning cloth and gently wipe the screen. Never press, or apply any pressure to the screen, while attempting to removed dust, or finger prints. This may cause unintentional damage to occur. Hope this help a bit. [ Joseph  Mar 28, 2014 ]
I use a microfiber cloth and nothing else, no liquids of any kind, works great on tv's, computers, iPads etc. won't scratch [ KEITH A  Mar 28, 2014 ]
I simply use water and a microfiber cloth. Do NOT use any cleaning agents meant for windows, kitchen or bathrooms. I've learned that the hard way. But u may use a little bit of white viniger to remove tough oily smudges. Hope this helps. [ LUIS  Mar 28, 2014 ]
I think a little bit of water and a high thread count cleaning rag (eyeglass cleaning rag) can't use any glass cleaner cause it may damage screen. There are some lcd screen cleaners made by monster, but Im sure they are expensive. And a fine mist water bottle seems to work pretty well for me. [ JOEL W  Mar 28, 2014 ]
I bought some electronics screen cleaner [ CHRIS  Mar 28, 2014 ]
Monster Alcohol-Free ScreenClean Kit... [ ADAM  Mar 28, 2014 ]
Hello, my wife just bought a flat screen cleaning kit at a local store.. Figured it was worth it so not to mess up the screen.. I didn't look at it close to see if it could be duplicated at home.. but it wasn't all that much and it doesn't scratch it or anything of course ... hope that helps.. Joseph [ Joseph  Mar 28, 2014 ]
