Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good product. Had it for a month or so now, and it seems to work very well. Plays very well, and even seems to improve my existing dvd's also. The price was good compared to others I have shopped. It also has a multitude of other features such as video streaming from the internet. Its nice to be able to do this through this device rather than having to hook my computer to my tv, or watch on the laptop screen. Its also a nice looking product. Sounds silly, but i like that it isnt just another square black box, but rather a small geometric sculpture! Very happy, all-in-all, and would certainly recommend it for a cost effective blu ray that does a WHOLE lot more.

Great All-in-one-DVD player

Tim A from New Fairfield,CT on 3/31/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy set-up, great overall player, especially given the price. I was looking at a much higher priced 3D, Blu-Ray player and and some research I realized this one was worth the shot. The other player offered 4K upscaling which is something I didn't need for my situation. Really happy with this purchase. The Crutchfield advisors were great as always to work with.

Pros: Great value for what you get

This Sony blu-ray player has it all! Fast streaming, no "network error" messages. Love this product! Thanks to Crutchfield for the competitive price and unbelievably fast shipping. Read Crutchfield's statement-that's what sold me.

Pros: Stream immediately, excellent graphics, needs no dongle like older Sony model.

Cons: Can't come up with any.

Oh and of course Blu-ray playback is amazing.

Works Well for the Price

CaffeineMonkey from Redondo Beach, CA on 3/13/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased the unit as a replacement to a Sony Google TV Blu-ray player. I am making the switch because the old player would crash when streaming Netflix. I purchased this unit based on the price point as I have not had much luck with Sony product lately. The Netflix on this player works well and loads and plays DVD / Blu-ray discs well. Overall a good player.

Pros: Price point Easy Setup

Cons: Unusually slope design No front USB port or HDMI port for external devices

Quick delivery! Player functions as described. 3D rendering of Avatar by the player is spectacular. Set up is easy with on-screen guidance. Odd shape of unit does not lend itself to stacking (unless it is to be on top).

Pros: Image quality, ease of set up and operation

Cons: Odd shape of top of unit

Great Little Blu-Ray Player

JackiB from Florida on 1/14/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We purchased this player to go along with our new digital receiver so all our connections would be HDMI and "simple". We have been very happy with the player. It looks slick, was smaller than we thought it would be so it takes up less space than our previous DVD player, set up very easily and intuitively, and so far works great! Comes with a ton of apps!

Pros: Easy to set up, works great, looks sharp!

Cons: None I can think of.

Simple, Affordable, Can't ask for more!

Mark from Ohio on 1/12/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Setup is extremely simple. HDMI out to RX, setup the WIFI, add your Netflix/Hulu or other associated accounts and you are done. Upscaling up normal DVD's seems to work well and I haven't had any problems with any new Blu-ray Discs yet. My old system would have some problems from time to time playing newer discs even with the updated software.

Pros: Easy Setup, Cost, Compatibility

Cons: None that I have seen yet

Easy as 1 -2 -3 Very Nice BR DVD for Video Streaming

Anonymous from Cedar Rapids IA on 9/4/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I downgraded my premium cable channels - very disappointed with the prices I was paying to watch 5-10 year old movies on HBO - this BR DVD fit the bill. I am an older senior partially retired and the set-this up and connect to Netflix was very smooth and effortless! I am so relieved I was fearful it would be stressful. I highly recommend for accessing video streaming - I have not tried Amazon, Hula or an other providers-- YET! Now I have access to some movies that are newer 2012 and I can select them when I want to for just 7.95 per month. Also picture quality is very noticeable on NON Blue-Ray DVD's!

Pros: Easy Wireless connection, setup, Netflix access & registration effortless.Good picture quality and smooth streaming for ME!

Cons: None - I would have liked the model with the small keypad remote!

Pros: an average DVD player

Cons: first unit received HDMI did not connect with any TV

No app functionality

Nick from Knoxville, TN on 8/28/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Despite description from Sony, this 2013 model actually doesn't have any smartphone/tablet app functionality. The 2012 models do, but not 2013. An update is due for 2013, but Sony rep couldn't provide a time estimate. If you were planning on controlling this unit behind a cabinet with an app, it won't work. Otherwise a good unit.

Cons: No app functionality.

Great Blu-ray, great price

Jim from Central VA on 8/7/2013

This is a great little blu-ray player at a great price. Personally, my primary concern with a blu-ray player is how well does it play blu-ray discs. This means I pay very close attention to clarity of picture and the players ability to process the soundtrack. After all, that's the whole reason they invented blu-ray in the first place, to give the home theatre an incredible HD experience. Its nice that these newer players can be hooked up to the internet and can stream content from the web, but its not why I buy a blu-ray player. All that being said, this player does its job extremely well. The picture is crystal clear and it can recreate the visual impact of movies beautifully. It also handles the sound track of today's HD movies beautifully as well. The players audio and video settings are very simple to set up and its WiFi set up is quick and easy also. The first thing the player does once it can connect to the internet is check for a firmware update which you can then download and install when you desire. The unit looks pretty cool and it has a very nice price point for all that you get. The only flaw that I see, and this is the same flaw I see with a lot of things made in today's market, is that it is made with cheap plastic. Its over all build quality leaves a bit to be desired. But since I don't plan on throwing the player around the house I guess I can live with this one weakness.

Pros: Does what it is made to do very well and it does it at a nice price point.

Cons: Build quality.

Great disc player and network media client

RobS from San Francisco, CA on 8/3/2013

With this great product we not only upgraded an old DVD player to Blu-ray but also ditched our aging ROKU as well... it functions perfectly as a HD disc player and also accesses all the network content we were using (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Pandora, etc). The best part for us, though, was the built-in DLNA support -- we now have on-demand access to our library of hundreds of DVDs we put on an old Mac in our home. And of course, Crutchfield service and price were both great. HIGHLY recommend.

Good value

Mac from Kissimmee, FL on 7/24/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The product was on sale, for 20 off. This is my second Blu ray player, the first being a discount store special that was given to me. The Sony is a better sorted product, allowing easier access to more features. The image quality is a little better. The sound is about the same. It could be my imagination, but I think my old Denon DVD player had better sound than either of the Blu ray players. Perhaps because my old HK AVR does not pull sound from the HDMI cable and although the Sony does offer user selection options on the digital co-axial output (unlike the cheeper blu ray player) I think it sends its best sound through the HDMI cable. My Denon DVD player sent its best and only sound through the digital co-axial output.

Pros: Value, image quality, ease of use.

Cons: Due to it's unique shape it does look odd when stacked on another bit of equipment. But it looks good on a piece of modern furniture, or even better on a great piece of mid-century modern furniture. Just in case you happen to have something like that.

Overall good, but a few very annoying shortcomings.

Kyle A from Cincinnati, OH on 7/4/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall a good Blu-Ray player- loads quickly and haven't had any problems playing content. It also looks great! I would give it 5/5, but there are two big shortcomings that are so annoying I could not give it more than 3 stars. First, the resume function on Blu-Ray works about 1 out of 10 times. Very odd, because my Sony DVD player I bought about 13 years ago does this flawlessly. Second, the resume feature in Hulu does not work at all. I don't watch much TV, so I cancelled my cable subscription and signed up for Hulu, and it's a real bummer having to watch all the commercials again when you have to resume an hour-long TV show after stopping it 10 minutes from the end.

Pros: -Great looking asymmetrical design! -Fast loading/processing for Blu-Ray and Apps -Great video playback via USB -Good size -Easy setup -WiFi connection is very stable -Netflix button on the remote

Cons: -No resume feature in Hulu -Blu-Ray resume rarely works -Auto-shutoff can't be disabled -Network video streaming doesn't work well -No optical digital output, but that's not a huge problem

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was a bonus with the Sony KDL70R550A LED TV and works great for playing DVDs and Blurays. The internet features leave a lot to be desired, but don't use the player for those features. Wireless connection to the internet was easy to set up, but I have yet to be able to access the Sony Entertainment Network or any other internet features. Player indicates that it is connected wirelessly to the internet, but always reverts back to step one of connecting to internet content when I push the SEN button on the remote and never gets past that so I can enter the access code. Sony was not much help in resolving the problem as they indicated that I needed to enter the internet access code which I already know, but am not able to get that far in the process as indicated above.

Pros: Great DVD/Bluray player - much faster loading than my older Sony players.

Cons: Internet features not accessible.

Sony BDP-S5100

Brian from SCW AZ on 6/21/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit is light weight but performs well and has a full feature set for the price.

Pros: This player loads Audio and Video Discs much faster than my previous Sony BDP -S570. The dedicated Netflix and SEN buttons on the remote are convenient but slower to load than accessing the main menu. The On Screen Display now lists the Wi-Fi download speed.

Cons: The Coaxial Digital Output is limited to 24Bit/48KHz output regardless of the Disc Audio formats. I did not test the HDMI audio output.

Fantastic 3D Blu Ray Player

Philip P from Euless, TX on 6/21/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My last Blu Ray player was a Samsung and loading Blu Rays took FOREVER. I read the reviews and settled on the BDP-S5100's predecessor. When it wasn't available, I gave this one a shot and I wasn't disappointed. Very fast loading and flawless playing on the Samsung 60" 3D TV I bought from Crutchfield.

Pros: Fast, excellent on screen controls reminiscent of the Playstation3.

Pros: Somewhat expensive but a very good DVD player. Works perfectly and has many features.

Cons: None I can think of.

Sony BDP-S5100

KeithL from Ben Lomond, CA on 6/4/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far so good. I removed and replaced my previous BluRay player with the Sony BDP-S5100 last night. The player is extremely easy to get connected to our local WiFi network and to do the SW update that was waiting for it. We watched a couple of Game of Thrones episodes with improved loading speed, no hang-ups ["old" yamaha blu-ray player would get stuck] and found it easy to use. Picture quality is good on a high def TV with all of the motion in the video we were watching.

Pros: small, quiet, easy to install, options for power stand-by mode, good quality output on a large format TV.

Cons: does require logging on with a computer to register the player if you want to access Pandora etc.

Great unit!

Generally okay. Room for improvement.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first BD player so I don't really have much to compare it to. Starts up fairly quickly and I didn't notice any problems with the presentation. The only thing that bugs me is that it doesn't seem very reliable about remembering where you left off if you stop playing a movie and come back later. I'm a bit spoiled by my DVD player that retains information for something like the last 30 discs it's seen, I guess.

Pros: Inexpensive, good aesthetics, good rendering

Cons: Stop/resume issue

nice Blue Ray

Jackie from Ogallala, NE on 5/17/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

took me a bit longer to set this up with my older TV, but perseverance paid off and I got it up and running. not too bad though to figure out. Like anything new it just takes a bit to get it figured out. Easy though for the novice

Pros: fairly straight forward set up

Cons: the manual like all manuals now a days you about need a magnifying glass to read.

One Of The Best

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this Sony due to the number of file formats it will play. I can watch just about any video formats including downloaded files. The player has been downsized from earlier models and its simple looks makes a very elegant display. Lots of WiFi content too!

Pros: price, looks, compatibility

Cons: none

Outstanding Blu Ray DVD Player. Crutchfield was a pleasure to deal wit

Arnie W from Atlanta GA on 5/16/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Another great transaction from CRUTCHFIELD. Like all my other purchased, Crutchfield was a pleasure to deal with. This DVD player is ergonomically designed on the outside. The Sony product permits a full range of options to link via your WiFi network to other services to maximize your entertainment enjoyment. I replaced an older Blu Ray player which was not upgraded to accept the newest Blu Ray discs and it also was very slow. Since the Sony BDP-S5100 is WiFi connected, I imagine that its firmware is fully upgradable when a new software upgrade is released. The Sony BDP-S5100 is very fast loading and is fully integrated with my new Sony A/V receiver. As soon as I load a DVD, the receiver switches inputs to the Blu Ray DVD setting and it couldn't be simpler to use. Again, I would highly recommend the BDP-S5100 to anybody regardless of receiver brand since it is a good value for the money. Finally, Crutchfield has my vote of confidence since they have tech support after the sale, great prices and great information before the sale, like a "chat" room, and telephone support.

Pros: Looks, speed, wifi, integrates with Sony receiver, HDMI connect

Cons: none

Great Product

GaryL from West Palm Beach, FL on 5/7/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Terrific product. Easy hook up to my Sony 5.1 receiver and HDTV via HDMI cables. Easy set up with on-screen menu and player's remote, including WiFi connection. Compact and quiet. Fast loading tray. Makes my HDTV a smart tv. Very satisfied. Excellent service, start to finish, from Crutchfield, as always.

Pros: Quality product from Sony.

Cons: None identified.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After my PS3 stopped reading certain blu-rays I knew it was time to invest in a blu-ray player, This blu-ray player works great. I have this hooked up to my Sony nx810 and love the ease of being able to control both with a single remote (tv remote or blu-ray player remote). I am using it with a wifi connection and all the apps work great, load times are fast and the side view app works like a charm off my Galaxy Tab 10.1 I can stream videos, music, and pictures stored on my tablet with a few clicks. The only thing that bugs me a little and it doesnt affect the performance is that the design of it looks a little funky but people will notice it when they come over. and of course Crutchfield team was great in there service

Pros: Load times are fast, side view app is great

Cons: Design is a little funky

Cons: Side view app doesn't work well after update.

Disc and USB Compatibility

Disc Compatibility: The Sony BDP-S5100 Blu-ray disc player is compatible with many disc types:

Disc Type Disc Description
Blu-ray BD-ROM, BD-3D, BD-R, BD-RE

Blu-ray Disc Overview: Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a high-definition disc format designed to take advantage of today's high quality HDTVs. The resolution is up to 1920 x 1080 (1080p) and the data transfer rate is up to 54 Mbps. Blu-ray Disc discs and players offer several advantages over the standard DVD format:

  • Better Picture Quality: Blu-ray Disc is a true high-definition format offering video at 720p, 1080i, or 1080p resolution. While standard DVDs look very good on an HDTV, they don't provide a high-definition signal (not even when you use an up-converting DVD player). Blu-ray Disc delivers an extraordinarily sharp, clean, detailed picture, with deeper, richer colors.
  • Better Sound Quality: In addition to the same multi-channel sound formats you're accustomed to with DVD (Dolby Digital and DTS), Blu-ray Disc offers Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution, and uncompressed 7.1 channel PCM.
  • Greater Storage Capacity: What makes Blu-ray Disc's superior picture and sound possible is the much higher storage capacity of Blu-ray Disc discs. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25 gigabytes of data, over five times the amount a standard DVD can hold. Dual-layer Blu-ray Discs hold 50 gigabytes, which equates to nine hours of High Definition or 23 hours of Standard Definition video, plus high-resolution multi-channel audio and the added features and material that require multiple discs with standard DVD.
  • Backward Compatible: To ensure backward-compatibility with your existing library of discs, Blu-ray Disc players use a dual-laser mechanism: a blue laser for playing high-definition Blu-ray Discs, and a conventional red laser for playing DVDs and audio CDs.
Note: Like DVD, BD uses region codes. The region code on your disc must match the region code on your player, otherwise the disc will not play. The BDP-S5100 is Blu-ray region A and DVD region 1. Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted material.

Firmware Updates: As Blu-Ray technology continues to evolve, new disc types with enhanced functionality will become available. In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your player. These firmware updates will become available for downloading from the Internet. Occasionally, Sony may release updated firmware for this unit that may add or improve the way a feature operates. These updates are available free of charge. This unit is capable of checking the firmware automatically when connected to the Internet via broadband connection.

Note: The tested Sony BDP-S5100 Blu-ray player contained firmware version M15.R.0042 with an immediate update for firmware version M15.R.0095 (as of 3/19/2013). Visit the Sony eSupport Site for the latest firmware update information.

SACD: Super Audio CD use a technology called Direct Stream Digital (DSD) to convert music into a digital signal that can be stored on a disc. Compared to the traditional PCM method (the technology used for CD), DSD offers a much higher resolution by following more closely the original waveform of music. With a frequency response of over 100kHz and a dynamic range over 120dB across the audible frequency range - some 64 times higher resolution then CD - Super Audio CD offers music reproduction that reveals details you just cannot hear on a normal CD.

Dual USB Ports: The front and rear-panel USB (type-A) ports allow you to play photo, videos, and music files on a connected USB device. The player can recognize Mass Storage Class (MSC) Devices that are FAT-compatible and Still Image Capture Devices (SICD) class devices. The player can recognize up to 500 folders/files. The USB port also allows you to enjoy additional content (such as BonusView) on certain Blue-ray Disc titles. Some BD-ROMs have bonus content and other data which can be downloaded to an inserted USB Flash Drive (minimum 1 GB recommended, sold separately).

Note: Not all USB devices are supported.

Compatible Audio/Video/Photo Formats: The Sony Blu-ray disc player supports playback of the following audio/video/photo files recorded on BD-R/RE, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, and CD-R/RW discs; plus compatible USB memory devices.

Media Format File Type
Video AVCHD, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, Motion JPEG, WMV9, XVID

Video Section

Enclosed Optical Drive: The fully-enclosed optical drive keeps dust and particles away for optimal video playback.

HDMI (ver.1.4): The BDP-S5100's HDMI output simplifies A/V connections by carrying video and digital audio in one cable. The HDMI resolution can be fixed at 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p, or set to Auto, which selects the highest resolution accepted by your television.

Note: This player does not offer any analog audio/video outputs.

Precision Cinema HD Upscaling: Through the HDMI output, the BDP-S5100 is capable of upscaling the resolution of your standard DVDs. Output options include Auto (highest resolution accepted by the TV), 1080p (60 Hz video or 24 Hz), 1080i, or 720p. If necessary the output resolution can also be set to 480p or 480i. You can also choose to bypass the Blu-ray player's scaler, so the source material's original resolution is passed to your connected TV.

24p True Cinema: Movies are typically recorded on film with a frame rate of 24 frames per second. When a movie is transferred to Blu-ray Disc at 24 frames per second the BDP-S5100 will output that signal to the TV (if the TV will accept the 1080p/24 format) with no need for conversion.

Triluminos Color: The BDP-S5100 Blu-ray player incorporates Sony's Triluminos Color technology to provide a wider color gamut with rich, authentic color and a far more natural viewing experience with a heightened sense of depth.

3D-Ready w/ 2D-3D Conversion: The Sony BDP-S5100 lets you enjoy 3D Blu-ray disc movies in full HD 1080p. 3D viewing requires compatible 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D emitter and glasses, and a high-speed HDMI cable (supporting at least 10.2 Gbps) connection. The Sony BDP-S5100 can also convert 2D (two-dimensional) video content into simulated 3D (three-dimensional) video when connected to a 3D-ready TV, with 3D-glasses. You can make adjustments to the 3D effect and 3D depth.

Deep Color: The Sony Blu-ray player supports a color depth of up to 12 bits. Connecting the player and a TV that supports Deep Color via HDMI allows more accurate color reproduction than when connecting it to a TV that does not support Deep Color. The Deep Color function can be set to 10-bit, 12-bit, Auto, or Off.

x.v.Color: The BDP-S5100 supports x.v.Color, meaning it's ready for x.v.Color discs when they become available in the future.

Screen Settings: The Sony BDP-S5100 features the following screen settings:

  • TV Type: You can select a 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio for the unit's video output to match your connected Television's screen aspect ratio.
  • Screen Format: You can select the display configuration for a 4:3 screen picture on a 16:9 wide screen television. You can choose Full or Normal (select when connected to a TV with a wide mode function; displays a 4:3 screen picture in 16:9 aspect ratio even on a wide-screen TV) or Normal (changes the picture size to fit the screen size with the original picture aspect ratio).
  • DVD Aspect Ratio: You can select the display configuration for playback of 16:9 screen pictures on a 4:3 screen TV. You can select from Letter Box or Pan and Scan.

Video Settings: The BDP-S5100 offers the following video adjustments:

  • Picture Quality Mode: You can select from 3 preset pictures settings (Standard, Brighter, Theater) for different lighting environment.
  • BNR: Reduces the mosaic-like block noise in the picture.
  • MNR: Reduces minor noise around the picture outlines (mosquito noise)
  • I/P Noise Reduction: Improves the picture quality of Internet entertainment.

Cinema Conversion Mode: The Sony Blu-ray player offers two Cinema Conversion Modes - (1) Auto mode automatically detects whether the material is video-based or film-based, and switches to the appropriate conversion method. (2) The Video mode is suited for video-based material and will always be selected regardless of the content.

BonusView: The BonusView feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view addition content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.

Audio Section

Surround Sound Decoders: The BDP-S5100 has built-in Dolby Digital and DTS surround processors; multi-channel PCM Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution, and DTS-HD Master Audio are output through the HDMI jack (when encoded on the Blu-ray Disc).

  • Dolby Digital Plus: Dolby Digital Plus was developed as an extension to Dolby Digital. The audio coding technology supports 7.1 channel surround sound. Dolby Digital Plus also includes the standard Dolby Digital bit stream and is compatible with all current Dolby Digital processors using the coaxial digital output.
  • Dolby TrueHD: Dolby TrueHD is a lossless coding technology that supports up to 8 channels of multi-channel surround sound for the next generation optical discs. The reproduced sound is true to the original source bit-for-bit.
  • DTS-HD High Resolution Audio: DTS-HD High Resolution Audio supports a maximum sampling frequency of 96 kHz, and 7.1 multi-channel surround. DTS-HD High Resolution Audio has a maximum transmission rate of 6 Mbps, with a lossy compression.
  • DTS-HD Master Audio: DTS-HD Master Audio has a maximum transmission rate of 24.5 Mbps and uses lossless compression (Lossless), and DTS-HD Master Audio corresponds to a maximum sampling frequency of 192 kHz, and maximum of 7.1ch.
Note: Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD are only output via the player's HDMI output.

DTS Neo:6: This surround sound setting outputs simulated multichannel sound from 2 channel sources via the player's HDMI output.

Audio Settings: The BDP-S5100 allows you to adjust the following audio settings.

  • AV SYNC: synchronize the picture and sound by delaying the audio output in relation to the picture output; 0 to 120 milliseconds
  • Audio DRC: The player offers three dynamic range compression levels - Auto, On, Off.

Digital Audio Outputs: The BDP-S5100 is equipped with a coaxial (RCA) digital output. The Audio menu allows you to select the digital audio format that is passed through the coaxial digital output. Settings allow you to transfer Dolby Digital and/or DTS sound tracks, or down-mix surround bitstreams to 2-channel PCM audio.

Network/Internet Functions

Wired or Wireless Network Connection: The Sony BDP-S5100 Blu-ray player supports a wired or wireless network connection. • Built-in Wireless LAN: The Sony Blu-ray player also features built-in WiFi which allows you to wirelessly access the Internet and your home network. The Blu-ray player's built-in WiFi provides a wireless network connection for the player with easy and quick setup. I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: You won't be able to stream audio from the Bluray to a phone, but you can use your wireless headphones through the TV audio output if it has an analog output. I would suggest checking the TV and doing it that way. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. no. [ BARRY M  Feb 25, 2014 ]
I have no idea! I would offer to follow your instructions to see if it could be done but I gave the unit to my brother as a gift and he does not live nearby. Sorry! [ PETER M  Feb 24, 2014 ]
Eva, I am not sure it can be changed. [ COLLINS S  Feb 23, 2014 ]
not that I've ever been able to figure. [ JASPER FAMILY  Feb 23, 2014 ]
I'm sorry but we have never tried to play a European DVD, so we don't know for sure. But upon looking at some other reviews online, it sounds like it does play European DVDs well. Good luck. [ GINGER & BOB  Feb 23, 2014 ]
I'm not sure since I bought this for US use only. They should be able to answer at Crutchfield. [ ROBERT  Feb 23, 2014 ]
Probably not much help. Mine is connected to an Onkyo home theater receiver using the HDMI connection. [ WILLIAM R  Feb 18, 2014 ]
Well, it definitely doesn't have those connections, so the only way I can think is if you could find a converter. Either digital optical to analog digital or stereo audio to digital optical. As far as the player, it works amazingly and the picture and sound (through HDMI for me) is the best I've ever used. [ BEN  Feb 06, 2014 ]
I used a HDMI cable to hook up my Sony BDP-S5100 to my Bose System. Hook one end of the HDMI cable into the Sony and the other end into the control console of the Bose System. It works perfectly. [ DAVID G  Feb 06, 2014 ]
Chuck, I actually returned this unit because of the lack of outputs for my older integrated amp. But there is both a HDMI and a COAX output for connecting to a receiver. If you look this player up on the Crutchfield site, go to the 'Details' tab and you will see "what's in the box", in this box you can download the owners manual. Hopefully this will tell you what you need. [ EUGENE  Dec 17, 2013 ]
Hello. The Sony BDP-S5100 has the following connections: DIGITAL OUT (COAXIAL) jack HDMI OUT jack LAN (100) terminal (USB) jack You may need a receiver with an HDMI input for your home theater setup. Or an HDMI to component / composite converter if those exist. More info is available at: esupport [dot] sony [dot] com [ MARK  Dec 16, 2013 ]
Mine works with my Bose Lifestyle home theater unit. What kind of connections are you looking for? [ WAYNE  Dec 16, 2013 ]
It has an HDMI output which I connected to my Bose Home Theater System and it works perfectly. [ DAVID G  Dec 16, 2013 ]
Unfortunately Chuck I got rid of the unit because it was defective. I cannot recall if it had a home theater port. I did not use it in that capacity. Instead I was trying to split the volume controls to 3 speakers. [ RALPH  Dec 16, 2013 ]
There are none, at least not any RCA jacks. I wish I had known this before I ordered one, but the very helpful tech support guy sent me everything I needed to return it and get another model. [ JOHN  Dec 16, 2013 ]
I plugged the HDMI out to my receiver and it works beautifully. If you are talking about the 5.1 speaker plug-ins, it does not have that. It's an awesome bluray! [ BEN  Dec 16, 2013 ]
Thanks for your question Dan. This player will work with non 3D TVs. For a specific recommendation on a Blu-Ray to work with your system I'd recommend contacting an Advisor by phone or online chat. They'll be able to check on the apps and compatibility of the different models to find one that will fit your system and your budget. [ Jeff  Dec 14, 2013 ]  Staff
