This player is pretty good. The apps are a little slow to launch, and the Amazon app seems to have trouble sometimes, but overall it is a good unit. It would be nice if the top was flat. You can't put anything on top of it.

This player is pretty good. The apps are a little slow to launch, and the Amazon app seems to have trouble sometimes, but overall it is a good unit. It would be nice if the top was flat. You can't put anything on top of it.

Pros: It just worked. I had no trouble connecting it to the network. It streams video without delays or jittering.

Cons: Apps seem slow to launch. The top isn't flat.

very small unit

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was impressed with the small size of this unit considering the features. It replaced a Panasonic blu-ray player that had fallen from the shelf and broke. I feel the picture quality of the Panasonic was superior.

Pros: Size

Cons: Difficult for unit to connect to internet Lesser picture quality

Quite surprised!

Pros: Very versatile unit. Many apps to choose from.

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed BD/DVD player because the Xbox One player contnuously acted up. This one fit the bill nicely. Simple hookup with HDMI to my Denon receiver. This player has fast startup times and even that is configurable in the set up menu. One thing to note, though, is this player showed a lot of snow on my Samsung LED until I adjusted the player's YCBCR setting. Not a big issue, really. This player also has wi-if or Ethernet connectivity which is good for updating the firmware. It also allows access to apps like Netflix. That's cool, I guess, but really isn't needed by me since both my Xbox and home theater receiver has this features. One thing that I really like about the player is it has a very small footprint and saves space on my component rack.

Pros: Small, easy setup.

Cons: Extra, unneeded features.

works well

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a setup to view Netflix plus a new Blu-Ray player. The Wi-Fi set up was very simple and this unit fulfills everything I needed. I have been a long standing customer of Sony and still have every Sony piece of equipment in working order that I have ever purchased going all the way back to the 1970's! Further, I enjoy Crutchfield's fast and economical shipping and their awesome technical support. This kind of customer service is becoming rare.

Pros: Easy set up, lightweight and compact in size

Cons: The remote is small and you have to take to not press a wrong button.

Cons: none that I can find

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Granted, you better have some bandwidth to use this without latency. I have 60MB, and I still run short at times. That is what happens when you share the pipe with others. The nature of cable, I am going to 80MB in about a week. Regardless, the unit works great. Much better than I had previously, and I love all the online channels you receive. Would definitely recommend. paf

Pros: Small, does not take up much space and works great. Also, it is much quicker than I had before.

Cons: Sorry, do not have any.

One Fatal Flaw

Richard B from Virginia on 12/29/2014

Every device has to have at least one design flaw. They won't let it out the factory door without one. This device's design flaw is that if you pause a movie for more than some predetermined amount of time (I think it's five minutes, but I haven't timed it to be sure), the player turns off and when you come back to it you have to spend the next ten minutes trying to get back to where you were. In my opinion, I should be able to walk away from a player for any amount of time with it paused, and unless power is lost, expect to be able to pick up where I left off. My last Blu-Ray player didn't have this problem.

Pros: Quick controls.

Cons: You can't pause a movie for more than a few minutes without the unit powering down and losing your place. There is no option to disable this "feature".

Sony BDP-S5200

2BobC from Virginia on 12/29/2014

This unit took care of a couple of problems I was experiencing, at a very competitive price. I have a new home theatre receiver, but the volume control had the same ir code as my old dvd players pause code. This does not, so my movies don't pause whenever I adjust the volume. Also, I had problems with playing a recent 3d movie on the old dvd player, probably due to a format issue. The movie played flawlessly and looked great on the new Sony player. I haven't played with some of the features available wirelessly yet, but there seems to be a larger number of them on the Sony.

Pros: Fixed several problems I had experienced with an older 3d player (how old could it be if it's 3d??). Easy to hook up and connect, works well.

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I use the S5200 for just playing blue rays and 3d blu rays through an hdmi cable. I don't use any of the wireless features or apps. That being said for movie playback and 3d playback, it is extremely fast and gives a great picture. Great for the $.

Pros: Small and compact, great picture, great 3d imaging

Cons: Odd shape with the top not being flat is about it

Sony BDP-S5200 is an adequate Blu-ray player

AlanP from Austin, TX on 5/29/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Our Sony BDP-S5200 has been used over a month, satisfying our needs perfectly. I was already looking to replace to our outmoded Blu-ray player when lightning damaged our Panasonic plasma tv through the TiVo box. We chose a Sony LED-LCD set to replace it and this player seemed a no-brainer with all the boxes checked. It is 3D capable, networks wirelessly w/streaming apps, has a separate digital audio out (for occasional use of an antiquated but adequate pre-HDMI 5.1 Surround Sound receiver), and it plays MP4s and other digital files from USB or disc. There were few reviews to read, but I took a chance on it anyway. It was a 'scratch-and-dent' unit from Crutchfield's outlet. There's no printed manual included, and the warranty materials were missing, but no problem. Out of the box it seemed more substantial than expected. For its diminutive size, it seemed heavy enough. First-time-on setup was intuitive. It found the home wifi and was connected easily. It immediately found and installed several system updates. I did not need to change any of its defaults. It has played any media I've put into it. HD streaming from YouTube and Amazon has been free from problems. It operates much quicker than the old Blu-ray player. CDs sound better than if played on a retired Magnavox CDB650 player which is also connected to the AV receiver. I would recommend this as an excellent basic all-media player for a more casual video user.

Pros: Flexible all-purpose media player. Compact, attractive design. Easy setup and operation. Wireless networking is a big plus.

Cons: None so far

Real issues with 3D, connectivity and occasionally needs rebooting.

PerryR from Saint Charles, IL on 5/19/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My bandwidth is 24.3Mb/S. There are no errors or dropped frames; When I launch a Netflix 3D movie, I get the message "connection speed is too slow for 3D". When I launch the 3D movie again, it may give the same message or it may play. When it does play, it can play right through to the end of the movie; however, sometimes it plays only for 20 seconds, then stops the movie to reload. This can repeat every 20 seconds, continuously. At that point, as advised by Sony, we unplugged and plugged back in the BDPS5200. Sometimes this worked but sometimes it did not. When it did not work, we loaded the same movie as 2D. In 2D it played right through to the end of the movie with no loading issues. It may have something to do with the fact that you must go through Sony's network to get to Netflix. I and many others believe it is going through their network that may be the problem, regardless of which Sony player you have. Sometimes I get the message that the network is not accessible when launching Netflix. I am using wired Ethernet so I could eliminate any WiFi connection issues. Its a solid connection. To test the connection, I disconnected the Ethernet from the BDPS5200 and attached it to my laptop. No problem. Blazing fast. Connected back to the BDPS5200, "network is not accessible". Pulled the plug on the player, plugged it back in, waited for 1-2 minutes, tried it again and it worked. The player didn't recognize a Blu Ray DVD. Had to unplug the power and plug it back in to work.

Pros: Pros: It has a nice HD picture. It has a sleek attractive design. The remote operates at a reasonable distance and is intuitive. Love the big red Netflix button for immediate connection to streaming Netflix without going through the menus. Lots of channel choices on their network. Boots up fast. Starts playing fast.

Cons: Small Cons: There is no user manual, you have to download it. After powering up, it looks like its ready to go. You can see all the streaming channel icons; however, it needs more time to get connected to the network. if you try to connect, you can get a connection error. Be patient and try again. It would have been nice if they put up an icon or some indicator that said it was now connected to the network instead of leaving us to guess.

Strike Two

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit froze up twice during setup, and froze up twice again while playing a Blu-Ray disk. Crutchfield cheerfully let me return the player and apply the price toward a Yamaha Blu-Ray player.

Pros: Lightweight, Straightforward setup.

Cons: Quality control problem.

Wifi not working

Opally from Asheville, NC on 4/8/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First one didn't see the network, and didn't connect when the network SSID was entered manually. No diagnostics available. Exchanging for another one of the same model. Perhaps a defective or weak Wifi? I wonder how to tell which BD players have strong wifi?

Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted material.

In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your player. These firmware updates will become available for downloading from the Internet. Occasionally, Sony may release updated firmware for this unit that may add or improve the way a feature operates. These updates are available free of charge. Video Section

HDMI (ver.1.4): The BDP-S5200's HDMI (v.1.4) output simplifies A/V connections by carrying video and digital audio in one cable. The HDMI resolution can be fixed at 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p, or set to Auto, which selects the highest resolution accepted by your television.

Note: This player does not offer any analog audio/video outputs.

Precision Cinema HD Upscaling: Through the HDMI output, the BDP-S5200 is capable of upscaling the resolution of your standard DVDs. Output options include Auto (highest resolution accepted by the TV), 1080p (60 Hz video or 24 Hz), 1080i, or 720p. If necessary the output resolution can also be set to 480p or 480i. You can also choose to bypass the Blu-ray player's scaler, so the source material's original resolution is passed to your connected TV.

24p Output: Movies are typically recorded on film with a frame rate of 24 frames per second. When a movie is transferred to Blu-ray Disc at 24 frames per second the BDP-S5200 will output that signal to the TV (if the TV will accept the 1080p/24 format) with no need for conversion.

Triluminos Color: The BDP-S5200 Blu-ray player incorporates Sony's Triluminos Color technology to provide a wider color gamut with rich, authentic color and a far more natural viewing experience with a heightened sense of depth.

3D-Ready w/ 2D-3D Conversion: The Sony BDP-S5200 lets you enjoy 3D Blu-ray disc movies in full HD 1080p. 3D viewing requires compatible 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D emitter and glasses, and a high-speed HDMI cable (supporting at least 10.2 Gbps) connection. The Sony BDP-S5200 can also convert 2D (two-dimensional) video content into simulated 3D (three-dimensional) video when connected to a 3D-ready TV, with 3D-glasses. You can make adjustments to the 3D image depth.

Deep Color: The Sony Blu-ray player supports a color depth of up to 12 bits. Connecting the player and a TV that supports Deep Color via HDMI allows more accurate color reproduction than when connecting it to a TV that does not support Deep Color. The Deep Color function can be set to 10-bit, 12-bit, Auto, or Off.

Screen Settings: The Sony BDP-S5200 features the following screen settings:

  • TV Type: You can select a 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio for the unit's video output to match your connected Television's screen aspect ratio.
  • Screen Size: For 3D viewing, you will need to set the screen size of your 3D-compatible TV.
  • Screen Format: You can select the display configuration for a 4:3 screen picture on a 16:9 wide screen television. You can choose Full or Normal (select when connected to a TV with a wide mode function; displays a 4:3 screen picture in 16:9 aspect ratio even on a wide-screen TV) or Normal (changes the picture size to fit the screen size with the original picture aspect ratio).
  • DVD Aspect Ratio: You can select the display configuration for playback of 16:9 screen pictures on a 4:3 screen TV. You can select from Letter Box or Pan & Scan.

Video Settings: The BDP-S5200 offers the following video adjustments:

  • Picture Quality Mode: You can select from 3 preset pictures settings (Standard, Brighter, Theater) for different lighting environment.
  • BNR: Reduces the mosaic-like block noise in the picture.
  • MNR: Reduces minor noise around the picture outlines (mosquito noise)
  • I/P Noise Reduction: Improves the picture quality of Internet entertainment.

Cinema Conversion Mode: The Sony Blu-ray player offers two Cinema Conversion Modes - (1) Auto mode automatically detects whether the material is video-based or film-based, and switches to the appropriate conversion method. (2) The Video mode is suited for video-based material and will always be selected regardless of the content.

BonusView: The BonusView feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view addition content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.

Audio Section

Surround Sound Decoders: The BDP-S5200 has built-in Dolby Digital and DTS surround processors; multi-channel PCM Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution, and DTS-HD Master Audio are output through the HDMI jack (when encoded on the Blu-ray Disc).

  • Dolby Digital Plus: Dolby Digital Plus was developed as an extension to Dolby Digital. The audio coding technology supports 7.1 channel surround sound. Dolby Digital Plus also includes the standard Dolby Digital bit stream and is compatible with all current Dolby Digital processors using the coaxial digital output.
  • Dolby TrueHD: Dolby TrueHD is a lossless coding technology that supports up to 8 channels of multi-channel surround sound for the next generation optical discs. The reproduced sound is true to the original source bit-for-bit.
  • DTS-HD High Resolution Audio: DTS-HD High Resolution Audio supports a maximum sampling frequency of 96 kHz, and 7.1 multi-channel surround. DTS-HD High Resolution Audio has a maximum transmission rate of 6 Mbps, with a lossy compression.
  • DTS-HD Master Audio: DTS-HD Master Audio has a maximum transmission rate of 24.5 Mbps and uses lossless compression (Lossless), and DTS-HD Master Audio corresponds to a maximum sampling frequency of 192 kHz, and maximum of 7.1ch.
Note: Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD are only output via the player's HDMI output.

Digital Audio Outputs: The BDP-S5200 is equipped with a coaxial (RCA) digital output. The Audio menu allows you to select the digital audio format that is passed through the coaxial digital output. Settings allow you to transfer Dolby Digital and/or DTS sound tracks, or down-mix surround bitstreams to 2-channel PCM audio.

Audio Settings: The BDP-S5200 allows you to adjust the following audio settings:

  • AV SYNC: Synchronize the picture and sound by delaying the audio output in relation to the picture output; 0 to 120 milliseconds.
  • Audio DRC: The player offers three dynamic range compression levels - Auto, On, Off.

Network/Internet Functions

Wired or Wireless Network Connection: The Sony BDP-S5200 Blu-ray player supports a wired or wireless network connection. Via the Blu-ray player's network connection your can enjoy music, video, and still-image files stored on your computer. • Built-in Wireless LAN: The Sony Blu-ray player also features built-in WiFi which allows you to wirelessly access the Internet and your home network. The Blu-ray player's built-in WiFi provides a wireless network connection for the player with easy and quick setup. With this feature, you can easily connect to a wireless LAN and enjoy the benefits of networking in a cable-free environment. A wireless connection requires a home network with an 802.11 b/g/n access point (802.11n recommended), 2.4GHz band, and internet connection. Supports WPS, WEP, and WPA security.

Bravia Entertainment Network: Once the Sony BDP-S5200 has been connected to your home network (via Ethernet or WiFi), you can have your favorite internet content delivered to the Sony Blu-ray player via Bravia Internet Audio/Video, the Opera TV Store, or the built-in web browser. You can stream movies, videos, music, and more with Bravia Internet Video; while the built-in web-browser lets you search on-line content by URL. The Opera TV Store lets you download additional apps.

  • Bravia Internet Audio/Video: Bravia Internet Audio/Video serves as a gateway to online audio/video content, delivering a variety of on-demand entertainment straight to the Sony Blu-ray player. Bravia Internet Audio/Video allows you to instantly stream a wide variety of movies, TV episodes, videos, and music from a large selection of entertainment apps.
  • Opera Internet Browser: The built-in Opera Internet Browser allows you to access select web content through the Sony Blu-ray player. Using the Opera Internet Browser, you gain access to and Gracenote Music Services. The built-in internet browser also allows you to do basic keyword searches, so you can browse other select websites (text-based only).
