The BDP-S590 also upconverts your regular DVDs, so that even older movies will look amazing on your screen.

Most Excellent Blu Ray Player

The Sony BDP-S590 was easy to set up. It plays Blu Rays and DVD's well with excellent video and sound quality. It also makes my music CD's sound great. An added bonus to this unit is that it plays music from Pandora very well.

Pros: Easy to set up and operate.

Cons: Kind of slow to load Blu Rays, DVD's, and CD's.

Sony BDP-S590 important details in the fine print

BrianL from New Hanmpshire on 4/28/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It is a good overall value but some important details are hidden in the manual which are not in the advertised specifications.

Pros: Very good overall feature set and plays well with Plex. SACD playback at this price is a great feature

Cons: It does not play uncompressed audio. The supported formats, especially m4a, can be compressed our uncompressed. Only in the manual does it say it does not support uncompressed audio. SACD - it only supports 2 channels. Again, you only find that in the manual.

Nice Blu-ray - great price!

Kendall from Austin, TX on 4/3/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Sony Blu-ray player has all the extras at the price of a stripped down model of a lesser named brand. Tried to find the catch, but there aren't any.

Pros: HDMI connection, but still has the analog output as well. My amp has limited digital input options that are all taken, so analog was necessary. Wi-fi built-in instead of being an add-on. Clean stealthy face that virtually disappears when not in use. Has 3-D, but will likely not be used by our family. Excellent price-to-feature ratio.

Cons: Guess the only Con would be a cheesy remote, but that is reaching to find a ding.

Pros: Well marked plugs for cables. Many subscription apps. Small with pleasing appearance with other equipment.

Cons: None that I have found

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This 3D Blu-ray Disc playback in Full HD 1080p is a good little worker. I love the way it plays standard DVD AVCHD HighDef movies.

Pros: Fast

Cons: menu formats could be improved

Excellent product

New England from White Plains, NY on 3/11/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This blu-ray player replaced a one-year old Toshiba that died. Should have purchased the Sony earlier, the quality is first class. Price is very competitive.

Pros: Powers up fast, remote controls are intuitive. Very good picture. Wireless connection to the modem makes hookup easy.

Cons: The internet interface (online menu) is a bit dated; almost all of the online content requires a subscription. On-screen timer is hard to read from across the room (small numbers, dimly lit). Online registration to Sony was long and painful.

Great once set up

John from Annapolis, MD on 2/24/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Its a great unit but took 3 days and multiple tries to get logged into Sony and their activation software to get it to work. Had to do the -mail chat with Sony twice to make sure it was their network and not something I was doing.

Pros: Great picture, good instructions, well laid out remote, great price, free shipping.

Cons: Sony's shaky web site. the shape of the unit is a bit odd, doesn't fit well with my other A/V stuff. There are some obscure audio settings that make dialing in my home theater a bit of a task, pay careful attention.

Very Good BluRay unit

TonyK from Granby, CT on 2/1/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I like this unit a lot! Excellent audio/visual results and you can't beat the price. It takes some time (~30-45 seconds) to 'boot up' (a little longer than my old DVD player, which I suspect is due to the unit accessing the internet). On the positive side, this unit has a lot of features, I haven't made use of all of them yet! We love being able to access movie and music providers without having to plug in our iPhone/iPad. There are a lot more apps available than advertised including free music. Setup was reasonably easy - typical of Sony products. Love the wi-fi. Of course I love the Crutchfield service too....

Pros: feature packed

Cons: slow to 'boot' (minor)

Love This

Anonymous from San Jose, CA on 1/6/2013

I recently bought one of these to replace a dying DVD player and I love it. Lots of internet choices. The ability to play title off of my home network. Flawless operation and great 3D. And cheap! Cheap, cheap, cheap! The price makes this nearly disposable and I did not expect the amount of bells and whistles at this price.

Pros: It's a great all around machine. Cheap and full of features.

Cons: None I have found.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After much research, purchased the Sony Blu-Ray as a Christmas present for our son . Sony just had much better comments than my Pana unit; especially if it is to be used to Wi-Fi movies. ( he does) It has been 10 days ....visited his apartment today and he is very..very pleased. A word about Crutchfield: Have purchased from them several times...Never disappointed. ...With this purchase- they were $50 LESS then Big Box's shipping $$....and unit received the NEXT Day !.... SUPER Job !

Pros: Wi-Fi

Cons: none so far

You want the Wifi!

Gapervision from Georgetown, CO on 1/5/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The blu-ray player works great, but the wifi really completes my home entertainment system. After setting up home network, I can access all music and video files on my desktop so no more burning discs to play on the entertainment system. Comes pre-loaded with many popular music and video streaming apps. Internet navagation is a little clunky, but if you download the remote app to your mobile device you can use your full touch-screen to enter website info, search, etc. Reads most media files either on disc, or on other devices on home network. Really ties my whole system together, and included apps like Slacker Radio take the work out of party mixes.

Pros: Plays blu-ray an up-converts standard definition DVDs to very close to blu-ray quality. Wifi allows access to all shared files on home network/PC. Pre-loaded apps gives access to tons of free live-streaming content, as well as netflix and amazon pay sites. Remote App for smartphones allows you to use full keyboard touch-screen to enter website and search info.

Cons: Included remote and GUI make searching and web navigation dificult. Internet browsing is easier with a touch-screen, or better yet, a full keyboard and mouse. Smartphone App make things much easier!

This is a awesome Streamer/Bluray/DVD player. I haven't experienced any issues whatsoever playing back Bluray disks. Boot times are very good with the disks I tested. Everything played back perfectly with stunning picture quality. However, I really purchased this player for its streaming abilities. The player connected to my Amazon Prime account easily and within minutes I was watching a movie. So far I have no complaints.

I already own 2 Sony DVD/BR players (we have 3 HD TVs) and never has any issues with these so when it came to pair my brand new Samsung Smart TV 3D 55in with a 3D DVD/BR player I decided to go for this one after reading reviews on this site. Got it in no time from Crutchfield and set it up in a snap. Just watched one my favorite movie and the picture is crystal clear! Love it!

Pros: Small form factor. Easy setup. Great picture quality. Great deal for the price.

Cons: None so far.

Bumble Bee from Denver, CO on 12/18/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have received the player only a week ago. It is a nice player. I had some issues with internet connectivity but was resolved with some tuneups. Nice options. I haven't played back a bluray or 3D disk so far. Other wise audio and some normal video cds worked just fine. works well with the TV and the receiver. Still figuring out the bits and pieces. That's why 4 stars.

CLASS 1 Laser from Chicago on 12/17/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Product works well. Straight forward menus. Out of the box solution for a remote HTPC substitute, can play shared Microsoft network files. Video playback rivals much more expensive brands. Anynet + compatible.

Cons: Chokes on .MKV files even though the specs say it supports the format. Does not include a USB card for retaining disk data. Only has 1 set of extra audio RCA outputs, make sure you have SATA audio capability on your home theater system to decode multi-channel. Cheap plastic, but so is the new price.

First, I have to thank the team at Crutchfield for making this purchase a positive experience. Good teamwork! The Sony player itself seems to be a good purchase, but was a bit difficult to program. One call to Crutchfield helped identify where I was going wrong. Picture quality is good. I have not tried to get online yet.

Pros: Easy purchase, quick delivery, excellent service. Good picture quality.

Cons: A little difficult to program

A complete Blu Ray Player, just what I needed!

MDALUSA from NYC, NY on 12/10/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A very complete Blu-Ray player. Nicely designed, pretty fast starting. Easy to set-up and to operate. The only disadvantage I found so far is the fact that one cannot jump to an index number for music on a USB stick. I you have 400 mp3 files in a folder and you need the 333rd you have to scroll all the way through the list.

Pros: - Nice design -Easy to set-up and to operate - Does what it should do - Nicely priced - Interfaces nicely with the Sony Bravia

Cons: - No indexing on mp3 files to be played via a USB stick - The keyboard on the remote is good but still basic, it is a hassle to type in a title when searching on e.g. YouTube.

Smart BluRay player.

Angela from Minneapolis on 9/13/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Hook up: Easy. I used the HDMI. Disc play and remote control: Easy to use and understand. Startup: I'm guessing 30 seconds using the low power/green mode. There is another higher power consuming mode that will make startup faster. As long as other reviews said that the only con was startup speed, ,I chose to buy it anyway and be patient with the start up. I have NOT been disappointed. WiFi extras: So many neat extras for listening to music, concerts, radio stations. I've only tried the free options so far - it has been fun.

Pros: Easy to hook up, easy to use, neat WiFi features, quiet.

Cons: No cons that are bothering me.

I bought four of these BDVD players so I could get NetFlix in different rooms. Hooking up to the wireless network was way easier than I expected. All four players are working flawlessly for about a month now. I "cut the cable" and wish I had done this a year ago.

Pros: Connecting to a wireless network is very easy. When adding players, they pick up NetFlix with no problems; no need to re-register with each added player.

Cons: None.

I purchased the Sony BDPS580 a few months ago and wanted another for a friend and they had discontinued it and made the 590. Both units have met all my expectations and both families are enjoying them immensely.

Pros: Small, sleek and attractive along with performing great. We have not owned them for a long time, but are very happy with them as of the writing of this review.

Cons: No CON's to even think about writing on about these products at this time and I believe even in the future. Keeping our fingers crossed.

Disc Compatibility

Disc Compatibility: The Sony BDP-S590 Blu-ray disc player is compatible with many disc types:

Disc Type Disc Description
Blu-ray BD-ROM, BD-3D, BD-R (ver.1.1/1.2/1.3), BD-RE (ver.2.1)

Blu-ray Disc Overview: Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a new high-definition disc format designed to take advantage of today's high quality HDTVs. The resolution is up to 1920 x 1080 (1080p) and the data transfer rate is up to 54 mbps. Blu-ray Disc discs and players offer several advantages over the standard DVD format:

  • Better Picture Quality: Blu-ray Disc is a true high-definition format offering video at 720p, 1080i, or 1080p resolution. While standard DVDs look very good on an HDTV, they don't provide a high-definition signal (not even when you use an up-converting DVD player). Blu-ray Disc delivers an extraordinarily sharp, clean, detailed picture, with deeper, richer colors.
  • Better Sound Quality: In addition to the same multi-channel sound formats you're accustomed to with DVD (Dolby Digital and DTS), Blu-ray Disc offers Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution, and uncompressed 7.1 channel PCM.
  • Greater Storage Capacity: What makes Blu-ray Disc's superior picture and sound possible is the much higher storage capacity of Blu-ray Disc discs. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25 gigabytes of data, over five times the amount a standard DVD can hold. Dual-layer Blu-ray Discs hold 50 gigabytes, which equates to nine hours of High Definition or 23 hours of Standard Definition video, plus high-resolution multi-channel audio and the added features and material that require multiple discs with standard DVD.
  • Backward Compatible: To ensure backward-compatibility with your existing library of discs, Blu-ray Disc players use a dual-laser mechanism: a blue laser for playing high-definition Blu-ray Discs, and a conventional red laser for playing DVDs and audio CDs.

Note: Like DVD, BD uses region codes. The region code on your disc must match the region code on your player, otherwise the disc will not play. The BDP-S590 is Blu-ray region A and DVD region 1. Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted material.

Firmware Updates: As Blu-Ray technology continues to evolve, new disc types with enhanced functionality will become available. In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your player. These firmware updates will become available for downloading from the Internet. Occasionally, Sony may release updated firmware for this unit that may add or improve the way a feature operates. These updates are available free of charge. This unit is capable of checking the firmware automatically when connected to the Internet via broadband connection.

Note: The tested Sony BDP-S590 Blu-ray player contained firmware version M12.R0161 (as of 4/18/2012). There was an immediate firmware upgrade (M12.R0320) available. Visit the Sony eSupport Site for the latest firmware update information.

AVCHD: AVCHD (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) is a high definition digital video camera format used to record in high definition or standard definition on DVD, using an efficient data compression coding technology. The format is designed to compress video and audio (Dolby Digital or Linear PCM) data, enabling a high definition video signal shot on a digital video camera recorder to be recorded on DVD discs, in the same way as it would be for a standard definition signal.

MPEG Playback: The Sony Blu-ray disc player supports playback of MPEG (1-2-4) video files recorded on BD-RE, BD-R, DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD-R, CD-R, and CD-RW discs.

Still-Image Playback: This unit will play JPEG/GIF/PNG/MPO still picture files recorded onto BD-RE, BD-R, DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD-R, CD-R, and CD-RW discs. Still images on your disc can be viewed in a Slide-Show as well as rotated 90-degrees left or right.

MP3/WMA/AAC Playback: The BDP-S590 supports MP3/WMA/AAC audio files recorded on BD-R/RE, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and CD-R/RW discs. When stopped and restarted, playback resumes at the same point as long as the tray hasn't been opened and the player hasn't been turned off.

SACD: Super Audio CD use a technology called Direct Stream Digital (DSD) to convert music into a digital signal that can be stored on a disc. Compared to the traditional PCM method (the technology used for CD), DSD offers a much higher resolution by following more closely the original waveform of music. With a frequency response of over 100kHz and a dynamic range over 120dB across the audible frequency range - some 64 times higher resolution then CD - Super Audio CD offers music reproduction that reveals details you just cannot hear on a normal CD.

Video Features

Video Outputs: The Sony BDP-S590 Blu-ray disc player features one high-definition HDMI output and one standard-definition composite video output.

  • HDMI (ver.1.4): The BDP-S590's HDMI output simplifies A/V connections by carrying video and digital audio in one cable. The HDMI resolution can be fixed at 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p, or set to Auto, which selects the highest resolution accepted by your television.
  • Composite Video: The composite video output will only output 480i, no matter the source.

Note: This player does not offer a component or S-video output.

Precision Cinema HD Upscaling: Through the HDMI output, the BDP-S590 is capable of upscaling the resolution of your standard DVDs. Output options include Auto (highest resolution accepted by the TV), 1080p (60 Hz video or 24 Hz), 1080i, or 720p. If necessary the output resolution can also be set to 480p or 480i.

24p True Cinema: Movies are typically recorded on film with a frame rate of 24 frames per second. When a movie is transferred to Blu-ray Disc at 24 frames per second the BDP-S590 will output that signal to the TV (if the TV will accept the 1080p/24 format) with no need for conversion.

3D-Ready with 2D-3D Conversion: The Sony BDP-S590 lets you enjoy 3D Blu-ray disc movies in full HD 1080p. 3D viewing requires compatible 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D emitter & glasses, and a high-speed HDMI cable (supporting at least 10.2 Gbps) connection. The Sony BDP-S590 can also convert 2D (two-dimensional) video content into simulated 3D (three-dimensional) video when connected to a 3D-ready TV, with 3D-glasses. You can make adjustments to the 3D effect and 3D depth.

Deep Color: The Sony Blu-ray player supports a color depth of up to 12 bits. Connecting the player and a TV that supports Deep Color via HDMI allows more accurate color reproduction than when connecting it to a TV that does not support Deep Color. The Deep Color function can be set to 10-bit, 12-bit, Auto, or Off.

x.v.Color: The BDP-S590 supports x.v.Color, meaning it's ready for x.v.Color discs when they become available in the future.

Screen Settings: The Sony BDP-S590 features the following screen settings:

  • TV Type: You can select a 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio for the unit's video output to match your connected Television's screen aspect ratio.
  • Screen Format: You can select the display configuration for a 4:3 screen picture on a 16:9 wide screen television. You can select from the following:
    • Original: select when connected to a TV with a wide mode function; displays a 4:3 screen picture in 16:9 aspect ratio even on a wide-screen TV
    • Fixed Aspect Ratio: changes the picture size to fit the screen size with the original picture aspect ratio
  • DVD Aspect Ratio: You can select the display configuration for playback of 16:9 screen pictures on a 4:3 screen TV. You can select from Letter Box or Pan & Scan.

  • BNR: Reduces the mosaic-like block noise in the picture.
  • MNR: Reduces minor noise around the picture outlines (mosquito noise)
  • I/P Noise Reduction: Improves the picture quality of Internet entertainment.

Cinema Conversion Mode: The Sony Blu-ray player offers two Cinema Conversion Modes - Auto & Video.

  • Auto: The player automatically detects whether the material is video-based or film-based, and switches to the appropriate conversion method.
  • Video: The conversion method suited for video-based material will always be selected regardless of the content.

BonusView: The BonusView feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view addition content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.
