Better Than Most!

Michael P. from Indianapolis area on 3/28/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is one of the best blu ray players I own, and I have 5. This does a great job of up scaling the picture on older DVDs. It also loads faster than other players. I was so impressed with it that I bought a second one.

Pros: Great picture; great up scaling; loads fast

Cons: Not owning one!

Great value for the money

Very easy setup. Picture and sound quality are excellent. Netflix is easy to setup and access. I like the touch control's on top of the unit.

Pros: Easy to use. Price

Cons: None

Only lasted 6 months.

Keith from Orlando, FL on 2/16/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This BDP-S790 worked great for 6 months and one week. Then suddenly when I turn it on it displays "WAIT" like I had inserted a disc. The just stays like that. Obviously this Sony had design issues. Notice the review from Dec 2013, his only lasted 6 months too. It is upsetting that Sony will not even cover the shipping for 100% warranty coverage. It is also upsetting that I will have to wait WEEKS for another unit. Gee, then when the replacement unit fails 6 months after arrival, it will be out of the 1 year warranty.

Cons: Only last 6 months.

ME from Chantilly, VA on 2/14/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Absolutely outstanding product. Incredible picture, classy design (including touch-sensitive controls on top), extremely easy set up and flawless performance over a variety of inputs. Two HDMI outputs allows 3D video signal to television directly plus HD audio to non-3D capable receiver. Chosen over comparable competitors for features and reputation (never tried Sony but, hey, they developed Blu-Ray so they've got to have some edge/experience.) Could not be happier.

Very nice

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got this for a dark media room with an Epson projector and an 85" screen (all from Crutchfield). This unit is sturdy and I chose it over the Oppo for features. It has a metal frame (sturdy) and the wi if works like a champ. The sound and picture are amazing with accurate colors and little to no blur. Even 3D looks fantastic. Couldn't be more pleased with my purchase.

Pros: Build quality, features, sound picture and ease of set up.

Cons: None yet...

Hooked this up to a new LCD screen TV and through my 10 year old receiver with digital optical only. The sound is better than I expected but what blew me away was the quality of a regular DVD played through this baby!

Pros: The unit is small. Unbelievable picture quality.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I initially got the product to play some DVD's that were given to me as a Christmas present. It was incredibly easy to use, the WIFI is very good, with good picture quality and it has opened me to a different world of on demand using Netflix, Hulu, etc.... A great product, easy to use, and low profile.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to go with my new Sony TV 3D and the first movie I watched was the latest Star Trek flick and it was so cool. I loved the picture no problems that I noticed. It is a cream puff to install and I love the wireless network capability and doing a firmware upgrade before I used it. I am real pleased with my purchase and the excellent sales and service employees at Crutchfield.

Pros: Affordable with awesome picture and features.

This player does so much more than just play Blue-ray disk it should be called something "ultimate media player machine." Connecting it to the network was easy, and both video streaming and disk play are flawless. I can play online content as well as stream video from my media pc, laptop or tablet.

Pros: Video quality Ability to play streamed vide

Cons: Some files that play fine on PC won't play on this player

NY411 from Upstate NY on 12/20/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit works great ! I have a cheaper Sony Blu Ray and I really don't care for it,due to it is too slow processing. This unit is fast ! I use it a lot for streaming (Net Flix, You Tube, etc.). I would guess due to the dual core processor. Also for us old school people, this Sony has the analog outputs so I can hook it to my vintage Pioneer receiver as well as 2 HDMI outs for non-integrated surround systems.

Pros: Fast Processor, Loads Quick, Loaded Jack Pack with Analog outs,Great picture as expected, Remote lay out is user friendly.

Cons: Non-Lighted Remote !

3D Blu Ray DVD

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

5 Stars is not high enough!! No words can describe how " fantastic " this format is. Figures jumping out of the screen into my lap caused me to leap off the sofa!! Machine is super fast loading and extreamly quiet.

Pros: Fast loading ~ Silent ~ Touch control on top of unit ~ Very friendly remote. The dual HDMI's for sound & video create a great home theater.

Cons: Are you kidding ! There are NONE.

Ed from Sedona on 12/3/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It failed completely within six months. To get a replacement you have to ship it at your expense, (after many tortured hours on the website and the telephone they did offer to pay for the shipping). They then decide whether to exchange it; presumably it better not have a scratch. In the meantime you wait, and rather than sending you a refurbished or new replacement and then you send in the old one in that box, you box it up in whatever you can find. You better not have misplaced an accessory, either. This is lousy customer relations. I have had electronic products fail, and on every other occasion with other companies have had a good outcome. Obviously I am done with Sony - never again!

Got this to go with my Sony 4k TV. The display from the player is beautiful in both 3-d and 2d. The up conversion to 4k is very sharp. All in all, just a fine player.

Pros: Easy set-up. Great internet selection. Easy to use menus. Great picture quality.

Cons: None so far. Don't really expect any!

JLBS from Levittown, PR on 11/12/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great piece of equipment. I got it because I needed a sony Blu Ray with analog audio outputs and not only has that but other great features. Streaming Video and music are excellent. Is very light weight but sturdy of construction and fits just about anywhere. I also liked the soft-touch buttons.

Pros: Lightweight but sturdy, fits anywhere, great soft-touch buttons, analog audio outputs

Cons: Too many steps to register for certain Video and Audio providers. Slow Browser.

Great player with a few quirks

ThomasF from Washington, DC on 10/29/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great player--handles Blu-Ray, DVDs, SACDs, CDs, High-Def Audio disks (High Fidelity Pure Audio) and other formats well. Also comes with a free 30-day subscription to the Berlin Philharmonic on the Internet--top quality audio and video concerts! There are just a few quirks that prospective buyers should know: 1. There is no random track selection, that is, you can't punch in a CD track number and have the player start to play it. You have to start the play and then press the next track button repeatedly until you reach your desired track. A rather odd omission. 2. For SACDs and High-Def audio discs, not even the track number is shown (it does show for regular CDs). All you see is total elapsed time of the disk (does show on screen). 3. The Opera browser supplied with the player will browse the Internet, sort of. But be aware that it has limitations. First using the remote to enter URLs and other alphanumeric information is very slow and clumsy. Worse the browser won't support common formats. I went to YouTube to listen to a Tchaikovsky violin concerto. I eventually got there but then received a message that the browser didn't support the format of the video and that the player needed wasn't available for my browser. However the quality of the audio is always extremely good, especially on the SACDs and the High-Def Audio disks (which are Blu-Ray), especially with the 5.1 audio channels. Could profit from ability to connect a Bluetooth keyboard & mouse

Pros: Great sound, great video, great price,

Cons: Quirky track select, clumsy alphanumeric entry from remote, limited Browser capabilities

Awesome Player

HTran from Rockville, MD on 8/19/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great player. The 3D and Blu Ray picture quality is great as expected. But what is unexpected is the how great this player up converts DVDs. I have a Playstation 3 and this player easily out performs the DVD up conversion. The dual HDMI outputs is very useful as I don't have to upgrade my Denon recieiver in order to pass HDMI 1.4 signal. One HDMI output is directly connected to my projector for video while the other HDMI output is for audio only. Incredible fast loading.

Pros: 3D & Blu Ray quality. Great DVD up conversion. Dual HDMI outputs. Fast loading.

Cons: None except that it would be great if this player had a Bluetooth remote control in additon to the infrared remote.

What a differance

Glenn S. from Pinole, CA. on 8/15/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sony's BDP-S790 is a magnificent machine chock full of features. High resolution, up scaling video, and HD audio including the SACD, and DTS formats that you usually don't find on DVD players in this price range. I bought this for a friend and he loves it. He had a Samsung player that wouldn't play certain BD movies from RedBox. This player loads them right up in seconds.'re looking for a good player at a great price this is it

Cons: None

System Installer from Illinois on 8/10/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sleek, fast and beautiful; loads and cues very quickly, rock solid playback, gorgeous picture and Skype capability is the cherry on top! It also does a nice job of upscaling lower res material. The price may hold some shoppers back but the performance is on a par with machines costing much, much more. Go for it, I say!

Pros: Compact size, nice looks, snappy handling of media, very pretty picture, Skype!

Cons: When you leave the store the only thing left in your pockets will be lint.

Roger D from Houston, TX on 7/5/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

FINALLY a blu ray player that approaches the level of performance of a regular DVD player! I've owned several blu ray players including the old Sony BDP-S570. I also currently own the Oppo BDP-95. My number one complaint has been response time i.e. the time between when you press a button to the time when the player responds. This is the first player I've had besides the Oppo that responds immediately when you press a button while watching a movie e.g. rewind, fast forward. It boots up quickly too when a disc is inserted. There is hardly any noticeable performance difference between the $1000 Oppo and this $750 cheaper Sony when playing a blu ray or DVD disc. And to top it off this Sony Player has my favorite feature of all (which most Sonys have always had) a Replay button which instantly skips back 10 seconds with one push of it. No messing with the rewind or fast forward buttons which can take you too far really fast. Not even my Oppo has this feature believe it or not. (which is very irritating after spending $1000!) Set up including Wi-Fi was simple. I would even say idiot proof! (Unless you have difficulty screwing in a light bulb.) And it even comes with a real paper owners manual. All that said I would recommend not reading anymore reviews and click "add to cart". As always Crutchfield customer service was outstanding!

Pros: Fast, 10 second Replay button, nice remote lay out, easy setup

Cons: none

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Though we have not had a lot of time to use the new player, the initial setup was fairly simple and blended well with both new and old electronics. Hopefully it will continue to perform to our higher expectations.

Pros: easy setup and does not require all new electronics (new style TV's )

Cons: need more time with equipment to really know how it will perform and have no other comparison at this time

Excellent player at a fair price

Ira from Stratford, CT on 5/30/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The player has excellent picture and sound, in a compact package. The user interface leaves much to be desired.

Pros: Dual HDMI outputs, does 5.1 with Netflix and Amazon, passes DSD over HDMI, attractive.

Cons: No track number displayed when playing SACD (unconscionable), GUI, both primary and with Netflix is slow and awkward, Search function is awful, power "button" is difficult to find when unit is off, not compatible with Netflix 3D Streaming, very noisy when loading multi-channel SACDs.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Blu-ray player from Sony is easy to use and it has all the features you need. The software update utility works well and 802.11n wireless is great. I use Netflix often and it will load the site from first click to "ready-to-download" a movie in 30 seconds.

Pros: Dual processor is the way to go. This player is worth the money.

Cons: None

Love it!

Denny from Arlington, tx on 5/13/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is new technology for us. Our 'old' players are just that: old! Thankfully, our TV isn't, but lacks 3D. We did read a lot of reviews, seeing the pros and the cons. In the end, we opted to take this unit over the Sony S590. That should tell you we focused on a Sony lineup. This was due, in part to so many lousy reviews of LG, Samsung (many were very pro, but the reviewed product wasn't available), and Toshiba. We don't care for Panasonic equipment,as a rule. Hook-up was too simple. We see a hard-wired connection to our home network, even though we have wi-fi. Connection to the network was completed without error. The unit did edible a software/firmware upgrade immediately. I had read any reviews that indicate problems and we should not do the upgrade. All is okay! No problems. Picture clarity is superb! Much better than our old unit. Everything is so clear, so vivid. Well, we are pleased. We haven't 'surfed' the Internet using the Sony built-in browser yet. That comes next. We have used the unit at Netflix and amazon instant video with 0 problems. Oh, salty, we read the manual...all of it before we used it!

Pros: Lots of features for the price. I think too many for the "technology state" we are in. But, we're glad it's there. Biggest pro: we brought it from Crutchfield! Best service, and customer support anywhere.

Cons: None,so far. We installed the Sony app TV Sideways for our Apple handheld products. We've experienced some problem with it, but are still getting used to it.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this because of the dual HDMI out. We have an older receiver that does not support 3D. This player works well. Load times are short. The internet streaming is fast and responsive. Set-up and use is easy. The player has a nice picture and 3D works well. I have no complaints.

Pros: Good picture, short load times

Cons: None yet

Great player at a great price

Justin A. from Norwood, MA on 4/20/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We wanted to get a blu-ray player that loaded quicker - our original player could take 5-10 minutes to load a blu-ray disc and sometimes would just freeze up. This player load MUCH faster, practically instantaneous. It also has the ability to stream content from a wide variety of providers - that is the other reason we purchased this one. The quality of the audio and video is excellent. For the price I believe this is the best blu-ray player on the market. The iPhone app for controlling this player works quite well. The player is also much smaller than our previous player.

Pros: Fast loading time, streaming from many services, easy to use, iPhone App works fantastic!

Cons: Interface for spelling words in searches is clunky. It would have been nice to have some kind of keyboard, especially on the iPhone app where such a thing would be easy to do.

Sony BDP-S790

Billy Budd from Binghamville, VT on 4/18/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice unit, which performs as advertised. Easy to set up and use. I do wish the styling was a little more conventional. The illuminated touch buttons are a nice feature, but you really end up using the remote 99% of the time. I bought this unit to take advantage of the 2 HDMI outputs, very handy.

Pros: Two HDMI outputs, ease of use

Cons: Display on the unit is too dim to easily see in daylight. The on-screen display when using Blue Ray is a little limited.

Based on previous Sony Players I purchased the S790. I am happy with this one also.

Pros: Excellent picture and sound with 2D and 3D Blu-ray disks with easy basic setup. Powers on Samsung TV when turned on.

Cons: Fairly long load time, but not a significant problem. Had some problems hooking the unit up to a receiver-amp. I found that the description of AV Seperation Output Mode in the manual did not agree with my experience when changing the parameter to get the unit to output sound to the receiver-amp.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I abhore the bevelled front panel look that is becoming more common these days. Equipment that is styled that way does not integrate well with my existing system. It has a low WAF at this house - more on that later. At least the front of this player is only partially bevelled, so it blends reasonably well. Having a dual HDMI output, and BOTH coaxial and optical digital outputs saves having to buy additional add on adapting equipment later on, and the annoying wall wart power cubes that go with them. This player will upconvert 1080i/p to the new 4K UHD. I'm curious what this player would look like on the new LG 84LM9600 84" UHD-TV. This player has a great price given the output flexibility. The 790 is smooth operating, has a great picture and sound, and has a few operating novelties that are fun to play with. What's not to like? Read my two cons I listed below.

Pros: Really slick operating, the pIcture and sound are top notch, the dual processors really speed up load time, versatile outputs, and it looks great on the shelf with my other equipment. I give it a full ten on my WAF scale - Wife Acceptance Factor.

Cons: No component output for some older displays - which is all too common these days. Websites given by the player for signing up for internet functions are apparantly obsolete. I don't play that game. I will notify Crutchfield to put the heat on Sony to correct this info glitch. They should have more clout with Sony than little-old-me.

This is a great dvd player. Very easy to use and has great picture and sound. Purchased because of the 2 HDMI outputs because of an older reciever would not pass 3d picture.

Pros: 2 HDMI outputs

Cons: Slow start up when starting movie.

Another Sony in the family

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When my 6-year-old DVD player (not a Sony) kicked the bucket, the search for a Blue Ray player was on. I didn't want to spend a lot of money, and this unit quickly rose to the top of the list. The deal was sealed when I visited my local high-end home theater store, where I have purchased my HT 6 years ago, and found that this Sony was on their shelf in one of their listening rooms (albeit the lowest-priced player they sell).

Solid Purchase

MRp from MN on 12/31/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Solid Value. Impressive WIFI and Internet Streaming channels and options - much better value than my Apple TV3. Dual HDMI Output is excellent. Great option to decode the audio on the Sony and Input via PCM right to my older Denon Receiver for great sound. Splitting the Audio/Video across the dual HDMI Out will also allow me to get a 3D TV WITHOUT having to upgrade to a 3D capable receiver in the very near future.

Pros: Dual HDMI Out allows you to split Audio and Video across the Outputs

Cons: Coming from Denon DVD Players, it's nothing heavy duty when it comes to durability. But not bad for the price.

Nice value

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have nothing bad to say about this Bluray player. I looked at & tried various cheaper players (under $100) and they cannot come close to the quality of picture & speed at which disks read & load the menus. I don't use the Internet streaming capabilities of this unit because I use a Roku instead. I'm sure it would perform equally well, but the Roku has more channel options to choose from at the present time. My opinion... if you're considering this player, stop considering & own it. I can't imagine you'd be disappointed in any way.

Pros: Speed, picture quality, easy setup.

Cons: None to report at this time (owned for 3 weeks & numerous Bluray & DVD movies.

Sony BDP-S790

PaulC from Lenoir City, TN on 12/27/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

From the instruction manual to its performance, I have been very well pleased with this unit. There was no need to install updated firmware and on-screen instructions were easy to follow. I was very impressed with its performance as a 3-D Blu-Ray DVD player from the moment I turned it on and inserted a 3-D disc. Nice soft-touch buttons for mannually operating the unit as well. In the future, I hope to purchase a larger 3-D TV; I will consider the Sony brand first, based on my satisfaction with its top-of-the-line 3-D player.

Pros: Great instructions, great performance.

Cons: Can't think of any!

Video fine - audio lacks basic features

dob from St. Louis, MO on 12/20/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The S790 works fine for video, but believe it or not, Sony has neglected to provide track numbering for SACD and Bluray audio discs on the player's display. You have to turn your TV monitor on to identify the track. It's ironic that track numbers are displayed for standard audio CDs but not for two disc types developed by Sony: SACD and Bluray. For SACD all that displays is the track elapsed time (the space following the T is blank); for Bluray audio all you see is total elapsed time for the whole disc, which can be quite long. Completely useless. Would have given it a 4-5 star except for such corporate short-sightedness. Come on, Sony. You can do better than that if you want to call it a universal player.

the Sony BDP-790 wow

daveomega67 from holmdel,nj on 12/16/2012

i brought the Sony BDP-S790 for it's massive improvement when it comes to picture and sound they were right. unlike oppo BDP-105 which can only up convert films to 4K if you are using a 4k tv. sony BDP-S790 can enhance blu-ray to 4k resolution and send that better picture in 1080p so you wouldn't have to buy a new tv to see what 4k picture quality looks like and full onboard 7.1 decoding. wifi has improved range and no matter your tv you will great quality it has bit by bit image enhancing for the upscaling dvds and so it can make blu-rays look 4 times better than it would than on any other unit.

Pros: 4k upscaling so your 1080p films would like better on your tv than it would with a normal 1080p player. the full onboard audio decoding so tv wouldn't have to guess how to playback the audio.

Cons: setup and trying to figure out what would be the best setting for best playback and it not having auto setup like the ps3 does which does everything for and sets unit to best settings for what you are using it with here i have to guess.

So Far, So Good

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After using the player for about a week now, all I can say is that it works great and is a HUGE upgrade from my six-year-old Sony dinosaur. Once you learn the menu, it's pretty easy to customize and make changes. The wireless setup was a piece of cake. All in all, I'm very satisfied.

Cons: Buttons on remote aren't illuminated, but I knew this when I chose the player. Illumination would have resulted in five stars.

Excellent Choice We Made

Bert_CCTX from Corpus Christi, TX on 11/15/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent choice we made on this sleek BluRay player. It was easy to install (one HDMI is all that's needed) and configure to our network. Menu navigation is intuitive with responsive selection time. Load time is pleasingly fast. The LED brightness is adequate. Be sure to check the firmware version that is installed and update to the latest version. We have not used the USB connections to date.

Pros: Fast load time, fast response time and easy to navigate.

Cons: I wish the LED were a little larger and a little brighter.

Very good BR player with a few minor issues.

Mikehattan from Cincinnati, OH on 11/8/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The video quality, especially DVD up scaling, is excellent. That's what you are buying a BR player for. A lot of streaming channels too. Blu-ray discs load fast, but navigation is slow. I don't like the remote layout. The navigation buttons are too close together. I often press the wrong one and end up at the home screen, then it takes a long time to get back to where I was. Also this unit is finicky with my IR repeater.

Pros: Very good Blu-ray video quality, very good DVD up scaling, A lot of streaming options, built in wifi.

Cons: Poorly designed remote, slow navigation.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

easy to set up, works well with the tv I linked with it, the samsung 65es8000. the apps are a bit more difficult to navigate than on the tv, but not impossible. the wireless feature is great to have and works easily. sony's blu-rays have always been superior in my opinion, in this price range, and this unit is no exception. it averages a few dollars more that the comparable samsung, etc, but the ease of use any sony quality make it worth it for me.

saved me money and then some

Scott S from WNY on 11/3/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this model because of the dual HDMI out. My LG 3D TV is a recent acquisition. I had to switch to 1.4 cables to see the BD 3D. My Sony reciever is 1.3. I bought a 1.4 cable to run to the TV, and a second HDMI cable runs to the receiver just for the audio. I wanted a second 3D BD and this solution saved me buying a new receiver. The Sony also does a better job on the 3D disks than the Samsung BD-6900.

Pros: 2 HDMI outputs at a resonable price. Awesome Crutchfield service. Good start up speed without the standy - by power.

Cons: No back light on the remote. Had to reboot it once.

Mild Glitches but Playback excellent

orlandomountaineer from Orlando, FL on 11/2/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had to update the software after I plugged in the unit - it would not do this properly wirelessly. I had to go online and find the instructions on YOUTUBE on how to burn a CD online, then putting it into the BD player. Thank goodness it worked or I would have returned this player. Another glitch I've encountered is that when I stop a movie for a long time or use the chapter function, sometimes the audio won't play and I have to restart the movie. I called customer support and they have no solution for that. They were able to instruct me on how to correct the audio/video mismatch that I encountered with the Bluray movies. Other than those issues, the playback is excellent for sound and video, the speed is good for loading, and the online content is excellent (thought the keyboard function for the internet is pretty much unusable because it takes too long).

Pros: playback excellent, good online content

Cons: software update tricky, audio missing after stoppage of play, audio/video mismatch - correctable

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome! Played 4 Blue-ray disks that my old player refused to play. 3 others had no problems in the Sony, old one had delays and sometimes skipped ahead.

Pros: Tons of setup options.

Cons: Manual could be clearer for some of the options, but I got most of it. I will play around with it and figure it all out eventually.

About as good as they come . . .

JW of Asheville from Asheville, NC on 10/30/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought the S790 as we're converting to wireless in this house, particularly for the purpose of streaming video to a Sony "Smart" TV. With no assurances as to the outcome of the task I cannot give much to the player's performance in that area. However, as a Blu ray player that, of course plays regular DVD's, it also does an excellent job with SACDs. I have a high-end Marantz SACD player and an OPPO. All three treat the music with justice but thus far my ears tell me that the sound of the same SACD disk comes across with greater instrument definition still maintaining the roundness, softness of the music (almost totally classical). The above statement applies also to music DVDs. My wife loves the look of the S790 - thinks the soft-touch controls are "neat" (and I agree). If you enjoy the challenge of properly setting up a piece of gear as complex as is this payer, you have your wish. But, it's in this area that the Sony beats most of the other players.

Pros: Good build quality. Clear, clean sound. Quiet. Clever controls. Ability to go wireless and obtain streaming video. Excellent user booklet (which is rare for Sony).

Cons: None.

sacd playback

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

i just submitted my review on the consumers site. i stated the reason for buying this unit was mainly for sacd playback. i own two panasonic bd's but neither one is capable of sacd playback. personally i think sacd playback sounds better than regular cd's. it put's you in the center of the music, especially classical music. my system consists of pioneer elite receiver and sunfire ribbon speakers, and they sound excellent. thank's for your time.

Pros: sacd and picture quality. the picture looks great on my tc-p65vt50 tv

Cons: none

EXCELLENT Player for Those on a Budget and Just Want a Little More!

vermonter16 from Manassas, VA on 7/3/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

i wanted the Oppo BDP-93 but due to certain financial circumstances I had to put myself on a budget. I narrowed it down to two players under $300 and took a chance with the Sony. I have been anti-Sony for many years now due to what I feel is lack of quality and merely profiting off of the Sony name. However, as of late, Sony is definitely starting to rebuild their image. I thought that I'd give them a try and I have not been disappointed. First of all - set-up took all of a couple of minutes. I connected it to my wireless network (which got one bar because I have this player in the basement) and yet it still was a very good speed when replaying videos online. I haven't yet experienced any freezing and haven't had to reboot. The image quality is very good too. As for DVDs this player grabs them super fast. There isn't much lag time at all. You pop the disc in and your playing the movie in lightning speed. I haven't yet thrown a thumb drive in to look at photos or anything like that but for the features that I have used - I give this player two thumbs up. I have friends that have 'cheaper' players and they work just fine and within their budget. But if you're looking for a step above and can't afford the Oppo and maybe want to save another $50 off the Panasonic DM-BDT500 and maybe use the savings and purchase an extended warranty instead - GET THIS PLAYER! If you just want to save $50 and spend it on a couple of new movies - then GET THIS PLAYER!

Disc Compatibility

Disc Compatibility: The Sony BDP-S790 Blu-ray disc player is compatible with many disc types:

Disc Type Disc Description
Blu-ray BD-ROM, BD-3D, BD-R (ver.1.1/1.2/1.3), BD-RE (ver.2.1)

Blu-ray Disc Overview: Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a new high-definition disc format designed to take advantage of today's high quality HDTVs. The resolution is up to 1920 x 1080 (1080p) and the data transfer rate is up to 54 mbps. Blu-ray Disc discs and players offer several advantages over the standard DVD format:

  • Better Picture Quality: Blu-ray Disc is a true high-definition format offering video at 720p, 1080i, or 1080p resolution. While standard DVDs look very good on an HDTV, they don't provide a high-definition signal (not even when you use an up-converting DVD player). Blu-ray Disc delivers an extraordinarily sharp, clean, detailed picture, with deeper, richer colors.
  • Better Sound Quality: In addition to the same multi-channel sound formats you're accustomed to with DVD (Dolby Digital and DTS), Blu-ray Disc offers Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution, and uncompressed 7.1 channel PCM.
  • Greater Storage Capacity: What makes Blu-ray Disc's superior picture and sound possible is the much higher storage capacity of Blu-ray Disc discs. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25 gigabytes of data, over five times the amount a standard DVD can hold. Dual-layer Blu-ray Discs hold 50 gigabytes, which equates to nine hours of High Definition or 23 hours of Standard Definition video, plus high-resolution multi-channel audio and the added features and material that require multiple discs with standard DVD.
  • Backward Compatible: To ensure backward-compatibility with your existing library of discs, Blu-ray Disc players use a dual-laser mechanism: a blue laser for playing high-definition Blu-ray Discs, and a conventional red laser for playing DVDs and audio CDs.

Note: Like DVD, BD uses region codes. The region code on your disc must match the region code on your player, otherwise the disc will not play. The BDP-S790 is Blu-ray region A and DVD region 1. Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted material.

Firmware Updates: As Blu-Ray technology continues to evolve, new disc types with enhanced functionality will become available. In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your player. These firmware updates will become available for downloading from the Internet. Occasionally, Sony may release updated firmware for this unit that may add or improve the way a feature operates. These updates are available free of charge. This unit is capable of checking the firmware automatically when connected to the Internet via broadband connection.

Note: The tested Sony BDP-S790 Blu-ray player contained firmware version M13.R0325 (as of 6/19/2012). There was an immediate firmware upgrade (M13.R0369) available. Visit the Sony eSupport Site for the latest firmware update information.

AVCHD: AVCHD (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) is a high definition digital video camera format used to record in high definition or standard definition on DVD, using an efficient data compression coding technology. The format is designed to compress video and audio (Dolby Digital or Linear PCM) data, enabling a high definition video signal shot on a digital video camera recorder to be recorded on DVD discs, in the same way as it would be for a standard definition signal.

MPEG Playback: The Sony Blu-ray disc player supports playback of MPEG (1-2-4) video files recorded on BD-RE, BD-R, DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD-R, CD-R, and CD-RW discs.

Still-Image Playback: This unit will play JPEG/GIF/PNG/MPO still picture files recorded onto BD-RE, BD-R, DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD-R, CD-R, and CD-RW discs. Still images on your disc can be viewed in a Slide-Show as well as rotated 90-degrees left or right.

MP3/WMA/AAC Playback: The BDP-S790 supports MP3/WMA/AAC audio files recorded on BD-R/RE, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and CD-R/RW discs. When stopped and restarted, playback resumes at the same point as long as the tray hasn't been opened and the player hasn't been turned off.

SACD: Super Audio CD use a technology called Direct Stream Digital (DSD) to convert music into a digital signal that can be stored on a disc. Compared to the traditional PCM method (the technology used for CD), DSD offers a much higher resolution by following more closely the original waveform of music. With a frequency response of over 100kHz and a dynamic range over 120dB across the audible frequency range - some 64 times higher resolution then CD - Super Audio CD offers music reproduction that reveals details you just cannot hear on a normal CD.

Video Features

16-Bit Video Processing w/ SBM (Super Bit Mapping): The Sony BDP-S790 features 16-bit video processing with Super Bit Map for premium, stellar picture quality.

Video Outputs: The Sony BDP-S790 Blu-ray disc player features two high-definition HDMI outputs and one standard-definition composite video output.

  • Dual HDMI (ver.1.4): The BDP-S790's dual HDMI outputs simplify your A/V connections by carrying high definition video and digital audio in one cable to up to two televisions. The HDMI resolution can be fixed at 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or set to Auto, which selects the highest resolution accepted by your television.
  • Composite Video: The composite video output will only output 480i, no matter the source.

Note: This player does not offer a component or S-video output.

Precision Cinema HD Upscaling (up to 4K): Through the HDMI output, the BDP-S790 is capable of upscaling the resolution of your DVD and Blu-ray discs. Output options include Auto (highest resolution accepted by the TV), 4K, 1080p (60 Hz video or 24 Hz), 1080i, or 720p. If necessary the output resolution can also be set to 480p or 480i.

24p True Cinema: Movies are typically recorded on film with a frame rate of 24 frames per second. When a movie is transferred to Blu-ray Disc at 24 frames per second the BDP-S790 will output that signal to the TV (if the TV will accept the 1080p/24 format) with no need for conversion.

3D-Ready w/ 2D-3D Conversion: The Sony BDP-S790 lets you enjoy 3D Blu-ray disc movies in full HD 1080p. 3D viewing requires compatible 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D emitter & glasses, and a high-speed HDMI cable (supporting at least 10.2 Gbps) connection. The Sony BDP-S790 can also convert 2D (two-dimensional) video content into simulated 3D (three-dimensional) video when connected to a 3D-ready TV, with 3D-glasses. You can make adjustments to the 3D effect and 3D depth.

Deep Color: The Sony Blu-ray player supports a color depth of up to 12 bits. Connecting the player and a TV that supports Deep Color via HDMI allows more accurate color reproduction than when connecting it to a TV that does not support Deep Color. The Deep Color function can be set to 10-bit, 12-bit, Auto, or Off.

x.v.Color: The BDP-S790 supports x.v.Color, meaning it's ready for x.v.Color discs when they become available in the future.

Screen Settings: The Sony BDP-S790 features the following screen settings:

  • TV Type: You can select a 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio for the unit's video output to match your connected Television's screen aspect ratio.
  • Screen Format: You can select the display configuration for a 4:3 screen picture on a 16:9 wide screen television. You can select from the following:
    • Original: select when connected to a TV with a wide mode function; displays a 4:3 screen picture in 16:9 aspect ratio even on a wide-screen TV
    • Fixed Aspect Ratio: changes the picture size to fit the screen size with the original picture aspect ratio
  • DVD Aspect Ratio: You can select the display configuration for playback of 16:9 screen pictures on a 4:3 screen TV. You can select from Letter Box or Pan & Scan.

Video Settings: The BDP-S790 offers the following video adjustments:

  • Picture Quality Mode: You can select from 3 preset pictures settings (Standard, Brighter, Theater) for different lighting environment.
  • BNR: Reduces the mosaic-like block noise in the picture.
  • MNR: Reduces minor noise around the picture outlines (mosquito noise)
  • I/P Noise Reduction: Improves the picture quality of Internet entertainment.

Cinema Conversion Mode: The Sony Blu-ray player offers two Cinema Conversion Modes - Auto & Video.

  • Auto: The player automatically detects whether the material is video-based or film-based, and switches to the appropriate conversion method.
  • Video: The conversion method suited for video-based material will always be selected regardless of the content.

BonusView: The BonusView feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view addition content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.

Audio Features

Surround Sound Decoders: The BDP-S790 has built-in Dolby Digital and DTS surround processors; multi-channel PCM Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution, and DTS-HD Master Audio are output through the HDMI jack (when encoded on the Blu-ray Disc).

  • Dolby Digital Plus: Dolby Digital Plus was developed as an extension to Dolby Digital. The audio coding technology supports 7.1 channel surround sound. Dolby Digital Plus also includes the standard Dolby Digital bit stream and is compatible with all current Dolby Digital processors using the coaxial digital output.
  • Dolby TrueHD: Dolby TrueHD is a lossless coding technology that supports up to 8 channels of multi-channel surround sound for the next generation optical discs. The reproduced sound is true to the original source bit-for-bit.
  • DTS-HD High Resolution Audio: DTS-HD High Resolution Audio supports a maximum sampling frequency of 96 kHz, and 7.1 multi-channel surround. DTS-HD High Resolution Audio has a maximum transmission rate of 6 Mbps, with a lossy compression.
  • DTS-HD Master Audio: DTS-HD Master Audio has a maximum transmission rate of 24.5 Mbps and uses lossless compression (Lossless), and DTS-HD Master Audio corresponds to a maximum sampling frequency of 192 kHz, and maximum of 7.1ch.

Note: Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, & DTS-HD are only output via the player's HDMI output.

DTS Neo:6: This surround sound setting outputs simulated multichannel sound from 2 channel sources via the player's HDMI output.

Audio Settings: The BDP-S790 allows you to adjust the following audio settings:

  • AV SYNC: synchronize the picture and sound by delaying the audio output in relation to the picture output; 0 to 120 milliseconds
  • Audio DRC: The player offers three dynamic range compression levels - Auto, On, Off.

Audio Outputs: The Sony BDP-S790 Blu-ray disc player features two digital audio outputs (coaxial/optical) and one analog RCA stereo audio output.

  • Digital Audio Outputs: The BDP-S790 is equipped with two digital audio outputs (coaxial & optical). sony your diskclean Blu-ray bdp-790 has a dual core building for better streaming it will last a long time ten years [ RONALD  Feb 10, 2014 ]
I got it for a dedicated media room with a projector. The wi-if allows you to download firmware updates to make sure it is always compatible with the latest disks. It also allows for 4k up scaling which it doesn't sound like you need (unless your secretly getting a $10k projector). You may be able to get buy with a lesser player but this one is very sturdy and the picture is awesome. Lastly, I have a 6 year old BluRay player in another room that still works fine. [ JOHN B  Jan 28, 2014 ]
I have never used my product because I have not been able to get it hooked up to my flat screen. [ JORDAN  Jan 26, 2014 ]
Hi Linda, Good question. The more expensive blu-ray player would enable you to access the features of a smart tv even if the tv is not a smart one. You would need wireless internet. This would be important if you want to access netflix, hulu plus, amazon prime, etc. in addition to playing blu-ray dvds. If that is not important for you, go with the cheaper one. Also, for 3d, you would need a tv that can show 3d and you would need a 3d source. These blu-rays generally cost more than non 3d ones. Players can generally last a long time, depending on frequency of usage. So if you are considering a tv upgrade down the road, you may want to think about the higher priced one. I have one and love it. Hope this helps. [ MARK L  Jan 26, 2014 ]
