Control your Sony receiver with your smartphone

Sony's MEX-BT3100P CD receiver makes it easier than ever to use a smartphone in your car. Its App Remote feature lets you launch smartphone apps from the receiver, while your smartphone acts as a remote control and a second display for apps and song info. Plus, the MEX-BT3100P will read incoming text messages on your Android phone aloud, so you can stay in the loop while keeping your eyes on the road.

Connecting your smartphone is easy — just plug your iPhone® into the USB input, or set up a Bluetooth® link with your Android™ to get started. Then use your phone's touchscreen to do things like selecting sources, picking radio stations, and launching apps. And on the other side of the App Remote's two-way street, you can select apps using the stereo's source button, the same way you'd choose the CD player or radio as your source.

Bluetooth convenience

Hands-free calling is a given with this receiver, but you'll enjoy wireless audio streaming from your mobile devices, too. And if you're a Pandora® Internet radio fan, you can control your stations from the receiver, plus give "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" ratings.

Serious sonic controls

Whether your music's on a smartphone, an iPod®, or CDs, the MEX-BT3100P has the chops to make it sound great. Sony's Dynamic Reality Amp kicks out realistic sound with excellent depth of field and soundstaging, and you can tweak it to match your car with a variety of tools, including a 7-band equalizer and digital time alignment. The two sets of preamp outputs come in handy when you expand the system with external amps or powered subs.

Your smartphone becomes an awesome remote control with Sony's App Remote feature.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Sony stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the receiver, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: Bluetooth compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

    Extremely Frustrating (Possibly Defective)

    2007 Nissan Versa
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

There are a lot of positive things that can be said for this unit. The sound quality is good, it is chocked full of features and the B/T handsfree calling is pretty grand. (Siri integration would be nice.) However, if you're going to use it for iPod features, be prepared to go bald trying. The iPod controls are clunky, glitchy and produce an overall terrible experience. Music stops and starts like a buffering internet radio station. Playlists randomly start over at the first song. Navigation controls work sometimes, but not all of the time, and tend to be inconsistent. I think that this unit may be defective and so I will attempt to have it exchanged. If it is simply a defective unit then I will update this review. For now, if you're an iPod, iPhone or iPad music listener, this is a no-go.

I was explaining the Bluetooth capabilities to my inlaws. I had put a JVC w/ blue tooth HU in my 2006 Civic. It was great! They went with this model. The JVC you can press the phone button on the JVC and activate voice commands. From the time I have spent with them you cannot do this with the Sony. The JVC will start Pandora automatically on your phone by pressing one button. When I was reading the manual on the sony I did not see this feature. All of us are using Andriod phones. I have a a Razr Maxx (older model with JB). They have a Pantech with ICS I think. All of us are also on Verizon. On their Sony you have to scroll through the phone book to make a call-pressing button to navigate-taking your eyes off the road. In the JVC I could press the phone button and voice command the phone to make a call. I have traded the Civic in on a 2012 Focus with Sync. Sync is not as good as the JVC.

    Pros: Looks nice. Sounds great!

Cons: Bluetooth capabilities are a bit compared to another manufacturer I have experience with.

Great upgrade for 92 Civic. Easy install with lit, harness and instructions from Crutchfield.

Pros: Bluetooth and multiple sources (usb, radio, bluetooth, aux) give us plenty of options.

Cons: Still learning the buttons and shortcuts to the various functions.

Great little stereo. I bought for blue tooth capabilities and ability to add SiriusXM in the future. I did not install the satellite radio, but all features work flawlessly. Install in my Altima was a breeze.

Pros: Bluetooth is very nice and easy to both receive and make calls while keeping your phone in your pocket.

Cons: There are so many features, that it can be difficult to navigate them all.

    I like it!

Got this as an upgrade to the 3000P, great choice for $20 more!

    Pros: Everything I need

Cons: Some of the controls aren't very intuitive, but that's why the manual's there I suppose. Also, doesn't work with certain iPod cords, says "USB overload" even though it's the factory cord.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great little unit. I installed the unit with little issue into a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500. I would recommend getting an adaptor that plugs directly into the factory wiring and attaches easily to the units wire harness, much cleaner, easier and affordable (about $5 with shipping) The instructions from Crutchfield were clear and concise. Sounds great, looks great and all of the functions work well. The display has many options but very simple to navigate and easy to see night or day. Price was great.

Pros: Has all the functions needed Good looking Great sounding Great price

    Cons: None

    Great Deal

    Rex from Arkansas on 10/24/2013

Installed this radio to replace a 10 year old pioneer because I couldn't get the sound right, even with infinity kappa highs and a 12 inch sub. The improvement was huge without even tuning it. As soon as I turned it on I played a familiar song and heard things I couldn't before. It somehow pushes much deeper bass from my sub without making it move more and it reduced sibilance from my metal tweeters. (this was comparing everything set at zero on both head units) It also sounds smoother and cleaner. For the price, this thing is packed with processing capability. The 7 band equalizer allows you to attenuate harshness or bring out deep bass pretty effectively. I even turned off the high and low pass crossovers on my amps and just used the radio because it sounded better. You can choose 50-120hz for the high and low pass and even adjust the slope of attenuation from 1-3 to blend your highs and lows. The bluetooth seems to work fine on my Galaxy S4. Streams spotify and receives calls no problem. You can't change the color or do anything super cool like watch movies, but you can watch movies on your phone and stream the audio.

Pros: Cheap, 7 band equalizer, bluetooth, processing is impressive for the price

Cons: only 2 pre-outs, only lights up blue, probably gonna go deaf because music sounds incredible

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Was a breeze to install, and just as easy to use. There are some minor bumps when it comes to using the USB cable and playing Spoitfy radio with an iPhone. It sometimes has trouble connecting, and you have to stop Spotify, play something in iTunes, and then return to Spotify and it will play. Not every time, but sometimes. I don't believe it to be the radio at fault, but more of the iPhone trying to sort things out. A bump none the less.

Pros: Improves stereo quality, allows for aux input, and USB input AND bluetooth, handsfree quality is great

Cons: Connection to Spotify can be a little frustrating at times

    1998 Dodge Durango
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this item to replace my factory stereo. I drive an old 1998 Dodge Durango and the sound system was limping along on two speakers; one in the rear driver's door and one in the front passenger door. The little directional selector knob had a mind of its own. So, I researched on this site for two months. The Crutchfield "does it fit your car" feature was very helpful when I was considering the right system for my vehicle. This product is great. I can use Bluetooth calling, so it's completely hands free. The remote works well and helps me keep my eyes focused on the road. I ADORE the Pandora. I haven't listened to the radio. Don't need to. And don't want to. Great item.

Pros: The Bluetooth is amazing. Haven't used the app remote feature because I don't need to. Seems extraneous to me.

Cons: Setting the highs, mid range and bass on the equalizer was a little challenging. The manual doesn't give you a description of the 7 channels. But played with it and was able to tweak it to my liking.

    We love it!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Having bought and installed many stereos throughout the years I was really satisfied with this stereo. It seems to have great sound with the built in eq settings and looks pretty easy to operate. What I was really impressed with was the sound during a phone call. I called the person in the car and it sounded like a speaker phone...not like you're in a tunnel talking. I was very impressed with that. Install was easy with the GM adapter for the Grand Am and the finished product looked very nice in the car. I have been buying Crutchfield for many years and will continue as their service and customer service tech's are top notch!!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am used to the quality and build of Alpine. The faceplate on the Sony is a little light and has some portions that have a cheap feel to it. But regarding the sound quality it's great. The 7-band equalizer and digital time alignment is well worth the price and effort to learn how to use it. It even has a feature that will allow you to enhance the bass to your rear speakers, or use the rear speaker outputs to directly connect a subwoofer, how cool is that! Great Job Sony!

    Pros: Sound enhancements Microphone adjustments

Cons: Faceplate feels a little on the cheap side

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently purchased a diesel pickup, and being a 6-speed manual I really wanted to have wireless bluetooth calling capability. I did quite a bit of research on this product and others, but ended up going with this one. Once this was installed I have definitely been impressed with this stereo. The bluetooth works as if it was a factory install and the people on the other line thought I was still talking on my phone like regular. I was slightly concerned with the noise pollution released from my truck, but it has not been a complication at all. This stereo was easy to use and very easy to set up. I also installed the App on my galaxy and it works very well. I have not spent much time experimenting with it so I am sure there are many more things it is capable of that I have yet to discover. My next step will be speakers to compliment the capability of this new stereo.

Pros: Wireless bluetooth that works like a factory option. Stylish/clean look

Cons: It beeps three times after you shut your vehicle off, you can get this turned off but I have been to busy to mess with it and it has not bothered me that much.

    1997 Toyota Avalon
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wow, this is such a massive upgrade from my factory stereo (with tape deck and no CD), that I think I'd be normally knocked over with appreciation for every little thing about this receiver. And for the most part, I'm very impressed. The sound quality is really good, the value is tremendous, and it was very easy to install in my 1997 Avalon. I've got to knock it down to 4 stars overall, however, due to the "Ease of Use" issue. It's not easy to figure out how to simply adjust the bass, treble, and midrange levels. I appreciate that Sony wants to provide a lot of sophistication with this thing, but at times, it's too much and too confusing. Eventually, you can figure it out, but it ain't easy when all you want to do is give the Black Keys a little more bass. Also, one thing I don't like is that if the stereo decides you should be on some other menu than the main one, you can't physically turn down the volume unless you hit the "Source" button first. Sometimes, you want to change the volume in a hurry, and you can't always do that on this unit. Bit of a drag. But overall, I'm very happy with this purchase.

Pros: Ease of installation, value, sound quality

Cons: Ease of use; weird ability to not adjust volume

Great Head Unit at a Great Price!

Craig from Lebanon, PA on 8/23/2013

    2007 Kia Sedona
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This head unit is great! I tested the Pandora control a little and played with Sony's App Remote app for Android a little on my phone. The call quality is excellent and I love the way it pulls my phonebook data from my Android phone and lets me store numbers in the six preset buttons for speed dialing from the head unit. For the price you really can't beat it. It's hard to find a head unit for that price with Bluetooth, USB, and Aux in connectivity let alone one that comes with a remote, mic, as well as full Android and Pandora support. I have the mic installed where the ceiling meets the windshield right above the rear-view mirror. I only tested it a little last night but the sound during phone calls is loud and clear on both ends. The phone call audio out comes from the front speakers only but this is by design as I found in the manual and I may be happy for that when our 2 and 4 year old are asleep in the middle/back. I only got it installed in the last week and since I don't drive the van to work I haven't had much chance to use it other than testing. So far I am very happy with the head unit and would strongly recommend it!

Pros: - The sound quality sounds great to me! - It has a "DM+" feature to upscale and/or improve the sound of digital audio - AppRemote for Android allows control from Android device and some control of Android device from the head unit - Plays audio from any device that support Bluetooth audio out, USB flash drives, or Aux in as well as CD's and Radio - Full Pandora control without even installing the Sony AppRemote - bright, easy-to-read display - includes mic for Bluetooth phone calling - lo

Cons: - It's not too hard but I think it could be easier to use. - The default options have the "Demo Mode" and "Caution Alarm" enabled. The demo mode lists features on the display every 5 minutes if you haven't pushed a button for five minutes. The caution alarm beeps loudly three times every time you turn off your car without removing the faceplace. Thankfully, both of these very annoying things are easy to disable! - The display is not a dot matrix display so it's limited to one line of text.

I was impressed with this system. Installed it within an hour in my 2005 Hyundai Elantra. My factory speakers sound amazing now! This system upgraded my old car and now makes me feel up to par with technology. It is a little confusing to figure out all of the features and how to change the sound quality, but I think that is because I'm so used to my dinosaur radio with a tape deck, LOL! I'm super impressed with everything I can do and was extremely impress with the value I have for the price! Thanks Crutchfield, you all Rock!

Pros: Sound quality, easy to install, awesome features, value for the price

    Cons: Confusing to figure out

I was quite impressed with the Sony MEX-BT3100P. It was just about the cheapest system I could find with the features I wanted (bluetooth controls, CD, aux, usb) from a brand I trusted, so I wasn't sure what to expect - but so far everything's working great.

Pros: Sounds great, near flawless integration with my android phone, easy front-access usb and aux inputs.

Cons: It sometimes forgets where it was on the USB drive, starting over at the beginning. When listening to audiobooks with long tracks, that can get rather annoying. My workaround - always turn the unit off before turning off the car. So far when I've done that, it's always picked up where it left off.

    Love the Bluetooth!

Very happy so far. I even installed it myself. I have a tumor in my ear and had a lot of trouble hearing with my cell phone blue tooth and having the Radio, it comes through the car speakers and it's fantastic to be able to make/take calls in the car. The minute I plug the faceplate in the BT connects automatically. Great sound and handles my old iPod classic perfectly. I can toggle between albums and everything. I commute and have some audiobooks that I wanted to listen to and didn't really like headphones. Plus, when I'm on the phone, it automatically stops the music/story and picks up when I'm done. I hope it lasts a good, long time! Price was great, free shipping, free wiring harness and free dash mount.

This Sony Mex- BT3100P is amazing. Once set up the Bluetooth phone feature just works flawlessly without any button pushing or repairing. I leave my phones Bluetooth on constantly jump into the car, start the engine and I am hooked up before I put it in gear! I listen to my MLB at bat, my own downloaded music or Pandora and forget I also have an awesome radio and CD player! I bought this as a necessity because my old factory car stereo stopped lighting up. I've bought a few systems in my life but never from Crutchfield, I'm completely satisfied and amazed at how well they know their stuff. I bought this unit for the Blue Tooth capabilities. I upgrades from a Pioneer that had faceplate contact issues in cold weather. The Sony works great and I am very happy with the Blue tooth connection with my IPhone 4. I do not like the app for the IPhone which helps control the deck when the IPhone is plugged into the USB. Also, I have chose not to use the Pandora application on the Sony as a source. It is much easier to just us the Bluetooth audio source. The sound quality of the Sony is not quite up to the Pioneer, although I am still learning how to adjust the bass and treble, and I can't seem to find a preset on the amp that I really like. Overall not bad for the price, I like to be able to charge my phone and use it with the USB port.

Pros: Good Bluetooth, fairly easy to set up.

Cons: Phone sound quality is not great, Pandora controls are awkward. Not certain about sound quality.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great radio. I purchased it to replace the factory unit in my 1999 silverado 2500, it is a big upgrade. The part I like best is the bluetooth phone, a big safety upgrade, hands free. I don't even need to get take the phone out of my pocket when I get into my truck (no more doing the wiggle schmiggle when it rings and I'm driving and forgot to take it out). This truck has poor storage built into the dash, and since the radio is a single din, I decided to make a custom bracket which left me room for a good size(8 in x 1 1/4 in) pocket on top. I hacked the OEM radio sheet metal and spot welded it to the Sony bracket, just took me 10 mins(I have a workshop, not for everyone) and presto slide in and pocket on top!. The bracket and faceplate that came with the radio were serviceable, but this let me improve on Chevy's poor interior design and make it my own. The wiring harness that came with it was very easy to hook up, thank you Crutchfield. I have installed three or four radios in the past and this was by far the least hassle, I would say easy. I think that if I hadn't wanted to make my own mounting, and just used what came in the kit including the brackets, I could have done it in less than an hour. Few products impress me as making my life better, but being able to have a cell phone conversation while driving and finding it no worse than if the person was right there is a big deal to me.

Pros: The bluetooth is great, paired with my Iphone 4s on the first try, the mic has good sound and noise cancelation in my truck ( I put it on the top of the window pillar trim piece) and it pairs with the radio to make or answer calls automatically when I get in the truck, radio on of course. Music sounds great, also plays from the songs on my phone over bluetooth. Radio has great reception.

Cons: I still haven't figured out all of the features, it should be able to control my music on the phone, but I think I will need to read the manual to figure that out. It has more features than I could use, but a simple balance (left right) control might be nice also. It is such a big upgrade though that it might take me a while to get around to figuring it out, I so happy with the unit....

    Sounds great!

Product was straight forward to hook up and sounded great once installed. I really like that it has a 7-band equalizer so I can tweak the sound. It also does a great job with the listener position settings. Only drawback for me was that I bought it to use with my phone for streaming pandora over bluetooth, but it will not recognize my older android model. I will be getting a new phone in a few months anyway though.

Pros: Easy to instal, sounds great, great programability for tweaking sound.

Cons: does not work with all bluetooth phones. A list is available through the sony website.

I just installed and I would like to get more bass. The OEM had more, so it may just take a little more messing around with the unit. From the time UPS delivered to the time I walked out of the garage, it took 2 1/2 hours. A lot of reading directions was involved. The wiring part of the directions could have been clearer. I like the way Crutchfield does business. I did have to call for help on installing the radio in the faceplate, and it seems bolts holding the radio would be better, but it will probably hold for now.

This is...uh...the fourth Sony I've bought (all at Crutchfield, thank you!) and the third different model. I buy them for work vehicles that come stock with just AM/FM. I've progressed through the years from needing the AUX input and ability to play MP3 and WMA formats to relying on the USB input a LOT to now...Bluetooth! I know BT isn't new, but I only have to buy a new stereo every three or so years. As always, install kit from Crutchfield and instructions were great. It's another really good inexpensive stereo from Sony that has a lot of functionality. See my pros and cons below.

Pros: Has all the input/options you really need.

Cons: While the list of cons is longer than the pros...this doesn't mean it's not worth buying. What I don't like about this Sony compared to previous models is the use of the buttons and the way the menus work. The menus are hard to navigate. I don't like that the "off" and "source" button are the same (you have to hole the button down to turn off). And when you ARE cycling through the sources, it'd be nice to disable the ones you don't use...

I purchased this to replace a Mach 460 head unit in a 1999 Mustang GT convertible. I wanted MP3 capability but also bluetooth, which I'd never had before. I used the adapter kit that uses the Mach 460 factory amps and it sounds great. The factory head unit was very muddy but the Sony is nice and clear but can still deliver thump to the rear speakers in sub mode. It was very easy to install in my car. Bluetooth can't be beat! Streaming from my Galaxy S3 is awesome and bluetooth calling and receiving is a real treat. I placed the mic on the top of my steering column behind the steering wheel and was able to hide the wire from under the radio and under the dash to the column without taking anything apart. The mic works well, even with the top down, windows down and V8 humming loudly at 70 MPH! I agree with most reviewers that say the control layout could be better but it's usable and the features are very good. Crutchfield service was great as I received a DOA unit where the knob didn't work and they sent another one right away. I put the second one in the basket, plugged it in and it worked right away. I am likely going to order a second MEX-BT3100P for my SUV.

The bluetooth phone feature works well,I love that I can make phone calls with the remote control. The factory microphone that came with the stereo works ok in the truck if I lean forward and speak loudly, I think it would work great in a car but doesn't quite have enough noise canceling for tractor trailer use. All in all I would still buy the stereo again if I need another one.

Pros: Ease of connection with phone bluetooth. Phone app for android. Pandora bluetooth feature. The many sound adjustments.

The only real issue I have with it is that there is no way to easily mute the sound. When you push the volume knob, it brings you to a 'Set' menu - which is kinda dumb. It shouldn't be so easy to get into a settings menu, and so hard to mute. In fact, I cant find a mute function, the only thing I can do is turn it off, which requires you to hold the power/source button down for one second (not two or more seconds which does something else).

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed the unit about two weeks ago, and I like it a lot. The blue tooth was easy to set up and connects each time I get in the car. I didn't have pandora before, but downloaded it to my iPhone to try it on the unit and it works great. If you use a USB cord it shows tracks name on the unit display. The app you download works well also. The. Remote works well and keeps you from taking your eyes off the road. My only complaint is no clock when it's on.

Pros: Easy install, lots of nice features, sounds good

    Cons: No clock when on.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this for my 2003 Jeep because I wanted Bluetooth for streaming music and hands-free talking for phone calls. It was a fairly easy install for someone with no tech savvy. The hardest part was running the microphone from the deck to my sun visor without showing the wire. The controls are my only complaint; they're a bit complicated and not intuitive. Once you mess with it for a while, adjusting EQ levels and picking preferences, it sounds great. The Bluetooth works wonderfully. Callers say I sound like I'm speaking into my phone and the streaming music sound quality is excellent.

Pros: Price is reasonable. Great sound quality.

    Cons: Non-intuitive controls

I had ordered this head unit a couple of months ago and finally got it I stalled just a few weeks ago. I wanted to wait on reviewing so I could really get the feel for it and all I can say is that I am very impressed. Sony did a great job on this and Steve, the man who picked this out for my needs, 2 thumb up. The Sony head unit exceeded my expectations and if you are looking for a good quality radio, here it is. The Bluetooth and app remote options included are awesome to have and makes driving more safe. Great radio!

Pros: Display, easy to use, and the to be expected great sound quality.

    Cons: Not a thing!

Good radio, love the hands free feature good sound quality as usual with sony. Wish this.unit came with the rear bass enhancer like my other receivers. But overall im happy with it.

Pros: Looks good, great sound quality with the eq7 settings. Clear sound on phone call with bluetooth

Cons: Couldnt find good spot for BT external mic. Has dim feature but unable to change illumination to dimmer green so im stuck with blue.

Great stereo for the price! Sound is crystal clear. I still have the stock speaker, but this stereo puts out amazing sound. It was super easy to install and set up. Only downfall was no pandora app control with I phone. But I used pandora through the BT Audio input. Golden.

Pros: Easy. Sound quality. Bluetooth works great.

Cons: No pandora app control with I phone.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Maybe I'm just behind the times, but I am still trying to figure out all the options I have with this unit. That's a good thing in my opinion. Always fun to find out 'this can do that'!!! Bluetooth is awesome. Very easy to install myself although the directions were very vague and I had to call the Crutchfield help line to clarify. However, less than 5 minutes on the phone and several very pointed questions answered thoroughly and I had 5 minutes wiring the harness to the head unit and another 5-10 minutes inside the car installing!!! Thank you Crutchfield for an awesome all around purchase experience. I also used the Chat while perusing different options to purchase. Andy was very helpful and patient with my questions. He went as far as sending me a link to a page he put together with the sony head unit and everything else I would need to install myself once the unit arrived. Just verified his info and proceded to checkout! Purchased on Monday afternoon and my unit arrived the NEXT day!!! Amazing. Couldn't be happier with the finished product!!!!!!!!!

Pros: Ease of installation. Bluetooth/hands free operation is fabulous. No more ear piece to drive and talk.

Cons: Directions are very vague. I needed to call the help line to get the job done.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a new CD receiver badly in my 2003 Maxima, its not a Bose system, so speaker and receiver upgrade(s) were necessary. This deck is legit, its got all the Bluetooth options and sound quality is good, not perfect, but a solid B. Install was easy and it fits perfect. There is slight distortion when streaming from my smartphone, but it may be some of my files are compressed a little too much, but otherwise, sound from CD's and AM/FM are stellar ... phone calls ... not so much. There are a lot of EQ options and sub options if I want to go that route. The EQ settings are almost endless, it really gives you fine touch control. The menus aren't difficult, but could be better. Power output to Polk 6.5's seems solid, a lot more responsive over factory deck. Dash kit fits perfect, another home run from Crutchfield!

Pros: EQ options, Bluetooth capability, Easy install, price.

Cons: Menus could be a little better. Slight digital noise from over-compressed files. Phone calls don't sound great through system.

Chose this one despite the bad reviews about UI and app. Should have listened. I expected more from Sony.

    Pros: Cheap bluetooth, usb, ipod.

Cons: No power antenna control line. UI is not intuitive. Audio pairing is buried in phone pairing, why not both? Can only tune radio with seek buttons, why not use dial? App is not nice enough to be worth using, disables native music app while it's running.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was bought for a business cargo Chevrolet Astro van. I was wanting an inexpensive radio that was Bluetooth equipped, I am always bothered by employees driving around talking on phones, searching for said phones, etc. Accident waiting to happen. This came with the microphone for the Bluetooth also which was a plus, (of course the beauty plate, antenna adapter and wiring harness was included also). Installation was easy. Very easy. EXTREMELY EASY! I was shocked when I turned it on and heard the old tired speakers sound like new. I ended up buying a pair of $50 speakers from Crutchfield and installed them in the back doors. Hey, I drive it sometimes and it sounds great! It was prewired for rear speakers which helped my decision. I'm 53 years old and I think it sounds perfect. It may not thump like the younger people want but it sounds great to me. 10 times better than the stock radio. The Bluetooth works like it should but has some echo. This can be adjusted by pressing 5 and turning knob but it doesn't bother me. The employees most likely know how to adjust for the echo noise cancellation. I ordered another Sony MEX-BT3100P a week ago and it is waiting to be installed in another Astro van. This time I ordered another set of $50 speakers with my initial order. That should be a testament to what I think about this radio.

Pros: Easy installation Bluetooth ready with microphone

    Cons: Too many settings

Purchased the Stereo because we are a tech friendly family [Plus my wife wanted Bluetooth Hands-free] We have been using the stereo for a very short while and all love it. The stereo Bluetooth, 3.5mm aux, Usb port, work seamlessly with all electronic devices we used: Android tablet, android phones with operating system ver. 4.0 or 4.1, Windows notebooks and phones all with operating systems of XP or later. All iPods we have & thumb drives all worked with out a blink. If I could have 1 wish that the CD player could read mp3 DVDs [Ha Ha]

Pros: Love all the devices that connect with the stereo, Bluetooth works great even with the remote microphone

Cons: Wiring harness and wires are not clearly marked for purpose. example [Green/White Strip = Left Front (+) Speaker]

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Sony MEX-BT3100P is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (version 2.1 + EDR), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.5 (Hands Free Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.3 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).

Pairing: Up to 9 phones or audio devices can be registered with the MEX-BT3100P (only one device can be used at a time). The unit can be set to automatically reconnect to the last connected Bluetooth device when the ignition is turned on. Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Sony MEX-BT3100P.  Please visit Sony eSupport for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

External Microphone: The MEX-BT3100P includes an external microphone to carry on your side of your phone conversation and voice command dialing. The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the level of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 12' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone comes with a mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.465" (diameter) x 1.425" (depth). There is no integrated front-panel mic.

Hands-Free Communication: The Sony MEX-BT3100P supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled cell-phone. Bluetooth hands-free communication helps to minimize distraction while driving by allowing you to control your mobile phone from the head unit, so you don't have to touch your mobile phone. The controls of the MEX-BT3100P can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also features an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering Calls: Incoming calls can be answered manually or automatically (between 3-10 seconds) through the Sony head unit, while the ring tone is output from your car speakers and the caller's name or phone number is displayed on the head unit's LCD. Incoming calls can also be rejected if desired.
    • Dialing a Number: Using the MEX-BT3100P, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways.
      • Entering Phone #: Allows you to manually dial a phone number using the unit's control dial.
      • Redial: Use to easily redial the last number you called.
      • Preset Dial: You can store up to 6 contacts in the preset dial for quick dialing.
      • Phone Book: You can store up to 1,000 contacts in the unit's phone book. Up to a 40 character name can be input for each contact.
      • Call History: The unit will store the last 20 calls, allowing you to select a previous phone number quickly from the list.
      • Voice Dial: You can make a call using the voice tags stored on your connected cellular phone.

SMS Indicator: The SMS indicator informs you of any incoming or unread SMS messages on your paired Bluetooth-enabled smartphone. You will still need to view the text message from your phone, as well as create and send text messages from your phone.

Wireless Audio Streaming (with Meta Data Display): The Sony MEX-BT3100P also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The MEX-BT3100P will be able to control your stored music's basic playback functions; such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track, Fast-Forward/Reverse, and Shuffle/Repeat. The head unit will also display your stored music's song information; such as Artist name, Song title, and Album label. The MEX-BT3100P also supports audio streaming of music apps, but without control or metadata. You will continue to use your Bluetooth enabled smartphone to view and control streaming music apps. When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Digital Assistant Control: When paired and connected with an iPhone 4S or 5/5C/5S via Bluetooth (not USB), the Sony MEX-BT3100P has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel control and integrated microphone. Simply activate the "voice dial" function on the MEX-BT3100P to engage Siri and use the integrated microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the head unit and its microphone. The head unit will only display hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the MEX-BT3100P ; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

Note: You can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone 4S/5/5C/5S. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

    USB/iPod/Aux Integration

USB Port: The receiver's front-panel Type-A USB port can be used for plugging in a (MSC) Mass Storage Class USB device; such as select Android smartphones (Froyo/Gingerbread OS only), portable digital audio players, or USB thumbdrives. The head unit can play music files stored on the USB device in MP3, WMA, or AAC formats (up to 320 kbps). The head unit can recognize up to 10,000 music files on a single USB Mass Storage Device. The MEX-BT3100P offers the following USB search, playback, and display functions.

    • Search Modes:
      • Quick-BrowZer: allows you to search for a track on a connected USB device easily by category (Genre, Artist, Album, or Playlist)
      • Jump Mode: gets you closer to the song you want by allowing you to fast forward through a music category in 10% increments
      • Zappin: play music (files or folders) in 6, 15, or 30-second clips until you find the song you are looking for on your connected USB device
    • Playback Modes:
      • Repeat: repeat a single track or repeat an entire album
      • Random: shuffle all tracks or a specific album
    • Display Information:
      • Numeric Text: track number and elapsed playing time
      • Alphanumeric Text: song title, artist name, and album label

Note: This unit cannot recognize USB devices via a USB hub. Not all MP3, WMA, AAC files may playback due to file variations. Copyright protected ACC-LC files cannot be played back.

USB 1-Wire iPod/iPhone Control: The MEX-BT3100P's front-panel USB port allows you to connect your iPod/iPhone via the included iPod dock or Lightning connector-to-USB cable that comes with your iPod or iPhone (not included with the head unit). This USB 1-Wire for iPod/iPhone connection lets you directly connect, charge, & control select iPod/iPhones via the USB jack on the front of the unit, as well as view metadata like song title & artist name on the front display.

    • Bypass iPod DAC: The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 1-bit D/A converter (bypassing iPod/iPhone DAC), allowing for a Signal-to-Noise ratio up to 120dB.
    • Music Navigation: You can choose to control the iPod/iPhone from the head unit or from your iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen. The Quick-BrowZer feature allows you to browse your iPod/iPhone's music library by Artist, Album, Song, Genre, Playlist, or Podcast from the head unit. You can search within a specific Quick-BrowZer category or All tracks alphabetically (A-Z). With the head unit's Zappin feature, you can play music tracks & albums in 6, 15, or 30-second clips until you find the song you are looking for on your connected iPod/iPhone. The unit also offers Repeat (Track/Album) & Shuffle (Album) playback modes for iPod/iPhone.
    • Information Display: The head unit will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information, including - Track #, Elapsed playing time, Song title, Artist name, and Album label.
    • Charging: While connected and the ignition switch is set to ACC or ON, the head unit's USB connection will power and charge your iPod/iPhone. If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then this unit will not recognize it.

Pandora + Remote App (for iPhone & Android)

App Remote Technology: Sony's App Remote Technology offers two-way communication between the Sony MEX-BT3100P and your USB-connected iPhone (iOS 5+) or Bluetooth-connected Android smartphone (2.1/2.2/2.3/4.0/4.1). You will need to download the free Sony App Remote application from the Apple App Store or the Google Play App Store. This application integrates compatible Apple iOS and Android apps into the selectable source list of the Sony CD receiver and lets you launch apps from the head unit. You can operate basic functionality of compatible audio apps directly from the receiver (operation differs depending on the app). Movie and navigation apps will continue to be controlled from your smartphone. In addition, you can control the receiver's sources directly from the application on your smartphone using simple finger gestures and see detailed source information on the phone's touchscreen.

    • Receiver Sources: The App Remote on your iPhone or Android smartphone lets you access the head unit's Tuner (AM/FM), CD, iPhone, Bluetooth, and Aux sources from your phone's touchscreen. You can use finger gestures to tap, flick left/right, or flick up/down on the phone's touchscreen in order to change AM/FM Band, Play/Pause a track, Seek Up/Down a track or station, select a Preset, or access an Album. You will also be able to see song/artist information from MP3/WMA/AAC and smartphone sources, as well as station identification numbers from AM/FM radio.
    • Compatible Apps (as of 12/4/2012): The App Remote also provides various music, movie, and navigation apps which can be accesses from the Sony MEX-BT3100P's source list. Available operation differs depending on the application.
      • Music Apps: Music apps include; AUPEO!, iHeartRadio,, Livio Radio, Pandora, MOG, Spotify, Slacker Radio, Shoutcast, TuneIn, and more. Thanks for your question David. To be able to use the factory steering wheel controls an adapter is needed. The radio will work without the adapter, but the steering wheel controls for it will not. [ Jeff  Nov 13, 2013 ]  Staff
