    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've owned this product for a month now and for 120 dollars you really can't go wrong! (Especially since crutchfield throws in a free car conversion kit and wiring harness) The unit let's you adjust to seven different bands, but if you're not that technically inclined it comes with some pretty solid preset eq's that lets you hear you're music the way you want to. It also comes with a low and high pass filter so that you can pitch the speakers the way you want. Also the Bluetooth feature works flawlessly with both android and Apple as well as the aux port. However if you're looking to plug android in the usb you may find problems depending on your phone. The built in Mic isn't really that great so I reccomend getting an external Mic you can run to your visor. Lastly I would like to say that navigating around the system can be perplexing at first, but as you use it you become accustomed to it.

Pros: -Great sound quality -CEA certified -Looks clean and smooth -7 band adjustments -LPF and HPF and other sound settings -Bluetooth android compatible

Cons: -Navigating around the settings is very confusing at first -Dimmer has to be turned on through settings and not through your car HUD -Built in Mic is crummy (however there is a port for an external Mic)

Joel from San Diego on 9/12/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

With the install pack the installation took no time, bypassed the factory pre-amp (which I wouldn't have otherwise known to do) and everything plugged in with ease.

Pros: Quality sounds good to me, definitely no complaints. The antenna is drastically more clear than my stock head unit was. Haven't used the bluetooth but the aux and usb are super convenient and the connectors feel well built and very secure.

Cons: The only complaints I have are trivial; just the bright color of the screen at night, and the beeping of the unit upon turning my vehicle off.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The addition of Bluetooth, Aux port, and USB to a 1990s system was an upgrade that couldn't be ignored. Crutchfield made the online research and compatibility simple so that there was no question as to whether it would work in the vehicle.

Pros: Buying a compatible device as well as the required harness and parts at one location made the shopping simple. The ability to compare various units side by side was also helpful in deciding which unit was best. Tech Support was very helpful.

Cons: Not having the full wiring diagram to connect the Bose amplifier to the the system harness made the installation a little frustrsting when there was no sound. One 5 minute call to Crutchfield Tech Support provided the answers we needed to correct the issue.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far I am loving this receiver. Of course with any new upgrade there is a learning curve you have to get through. Going from a Pioneer to this Sony, definitely has me scratching my head at some things, but so far the quality has been better than I expected.

Pros: Pretty easy to install. Great sound on broadcast channels and CDs. Love the Bluetooth!

Cons: The custom settings can be a bit intimidating if you're not used to scrolling back and forth and trying to find the perfect sound between the different functions. Bluetooth can be a pain but I am finding most my issues are dependent upon the quality of my MP3s.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking to upgrade my stereo, so I can play music from my phone, enable hands-free phone conversation and charge my phone. This stereo meets all my expectations. Crutchfield did a great job including detailed instructions and accessory needed. Crutchfield also provided great phone support for a couple of quirky things. All in all, I was able to remove my old stereo and install the Sony in about 1 hour. Stereo works great, I can stream music from my phone, pandora and also take calls over bluetooth.

Pros: Easy to install, good sound, all the features work great. Great instructions to remove old stereo and install new from Crutchfield. Also, great phone support

    Cons: Nothing really.

Purchased this Sony based upon past experience, customers reviews, value, and looks of this unit. Once I told my advisor what I was looking for he agreed this would be a great choice. Bluetooth, Pandora, USB, Aux Jack, CD, tuner and wireless handsfree phone use.....just what I needed. Easy directions, easy instal. Kudos to Crutchfield....Again!!

Pros: Ease of installation, looks, value, proven product name, features of unit.

Cons: Controls are a little hard to learn but after three weeks I have got it down. Gotta be able to read directions.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just installed yesterday. I figured quite a bit of the feature by myself, but it is pretty complicated compared to what I haveused in the past, but I upgraded for the bluetooth. I am not a head banger so sound seems fine. My only complaint in the radio reception is extremely bad. I am 99% sure I installed the antenna correctly as I was on a station that wasn't working and it started working when I plugged it in prior to putting my dash back together. I am in serious debate on returning the unit at this point in time. I know I live in a bad area but there were two stations that I really liked that I can no longer get with this receiver.

Pros: Blue tooth works good just by itself with my Samsung S4 Pandora control through bluetooth.

    Cons: Extremely poor radio reception

Nice Stereo at a Great Price

    2001 Toyota Camry
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace my wife's stock car stereo out of here 2001 Camry. Everything just works. I'm still using the original speakers so I'm not going for high quality here, but there was a noticeable improvement in sound quality. Bluetooth was the real reason for upgrading the stereo. It works great, automatically connects, and with android or iphone you can make it very seamless starting and stopping music. It is also great for google maps + music + Moto Assist which is what we use it for most of the time.

Pros: Great price, Crutchfield gives you all the accessories at no extra charge (harness, installation kit), bluetooth works great, sounds good, still does CD and radio.

Cons: No cons at this time. Something to watch for though. Because it does not have a microphone the bluetooth calling on our phones is not useable. This is because when listening to music over bluetooth a call will then come over bluetooth as well. However, the mic on the phone does not pick up your voice very well. Not the stereos fault, but something to be aware of if you want to use it for a feature like that.

    Great Stereo

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My biggest worry about this was the installation in a 2006 KIA Sedona. Turned out to be relatively easy. The hardest part was cracking off most of the tabs in the adapter "case". But in the end, the radio fit and looks great.

Pros: -Easy to attach to iPhone -Lots of presets

Cons: -One knob controls can be confusing -Small buttons for presets -Radio tuner seems to have a much shorter range.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What can I say. I'm not a professional installer and was able to get the job done in under two hours and setting it up was not to complicated either. The sound quality is good and the wife believes it is the coolest thing ever to answer her phone calls over the radio with the push of a button. I bought this unit for my wife's car, needles to say she is stoked.

Pros: Price User friendly Blue tooth Pandora app

    Cons: Non

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nothing special about this unit. Just a good quality sound at a very reasonable price point. I have gotten mixed feedback on calls using Bluetooth, due to the built in microphone, but have noticed if you speak up and speak clearly, there are not many issues. This unit was even able to integrate with all of my factory control built into the steering wheel. Not sure if it was missed in the installation or if it is just not compatible, but I did lose the ability to use the adjustment controls on the rear seat's console when this unit was installed in my SUV. From my short period of use, I think it is a great items that covers the basics without too many issues.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Sony MEX-BT31PW is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (version 2.1+EDR), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.4 (Hands Free Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.3 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Sony MEX-BT31PW.  Please visit Sony eSupport for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

Simple Pairing: Up to 9 phones or audio devices can be registered with the MEX-BT31PW (only one device can be used at a time). The unit can be set to automatically reconnect to the last connected Bluetooth device when the ignition is turned on.

Hands-Free Communication w/ Integrated Mic: The Sony MEX-BT31PW supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled cell-phone (such as your iPhone or Android smartphone). Bluetooth hands-free communication helps to minimize distraction while driving by allowing you to control your mobile phone from the head unit, so you don't have to touch your mobile phone. The controls of the MEX-BT31PW can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also features an integrated front-panel microphone, so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering Calls: Incoming calls can be answered manually or automatically (between 3-10 seconds) through the Sony head unit, while the ring tone is output from your car speakers and the caller's name or phone number is displayed on the head unit's LCD. Incoming calls can also be rejected if desired.
    • Dialing a Number: There are a number of ways to dial a phone number using the MEX-BT31PW's front-panel controls. You can simply enter a phone number manually from the head unit's control-dial. You can also transfer your phonebook contacts (up to 1,000) to the head unit and scroll through your phone's contacts from the head unit's front-panel controls and LCD. You can even store up to six contacts as presets for even quicker dialing. In addition, the unit will store the last 20 calls that were recently received, missed, or dialed. For greater convenience, you can make a call using voice tags stored on your paired mobile phone. Redial lets you easily call back the last number you dialed.
Note: The Sony MEX-BT31PW is fitted with a rear-panel 3.5mm mic input for adding an optional external microphone (sold separately).

SMS Indicator: The SMS indicator informs you of any incoming or unread SMS messages on your paired Bluetooth-enabled smartphone. You will still need to view the text message from your phone, as well as create and send text messages from your phone.

Wireless Audio Streaming (with Song/Artist Info): The Sony MEX-BT31PW also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone (such as your Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Android, or Blackberry device). You'll be able to playback & control stored music and music apps on your Bluetooth-enabled mobile device through the head unit; basic playback functions include - Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track, Fast-Forward/Reverse, and Shuffle/Repeat. The head unit will also display your stored music's and music app's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title. Advanced music navigation features will still need to be done through your Bluetooth-enabled mobile device.

Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control: When paired and connected with an iPhone 4S or 5/5C/5S via Bluetooth (not USB), the Sony MEX-BT31PW has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and integrated microphone. Simply activate the "voice dial" function on the MEX-BT31PW to engage Siri and use the integrated microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the head unit and its microphone. You can even ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone 4S/5/5C/5S. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

Note: The head unit will only display hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the MEX-BT31PW; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

    Disc & USB Playback

Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs. The unit supports the playback of MP3/WMA/AAC music files on a CD-R or CD-RW disc.

USB Port: The receiver's front-panel USB (type-A) port can be used for plugging in a (MSC) Mass Storage Class USB device; such as select Android smartphones (Froyo/Gingerbread OS only), portable digital audio players, or USB thumb drives. The head unit can play MP3, WMA, and AAC music files stored on compatible USB device. USB portable devices that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the CD receiver's USB port (max. 1A), and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On.

    • Zappin: With the Zappin feature, you can play music (files or folders) in 6, 15, or 30-second clips until you find the song you are looking for on your CD or connected USB device.

This USB 1-Wire for iPod/iPhone connection lets you directly connect, charge, & control select iPod/iPhones via the USB jack on the front of the unit, as well as view metadata like song title & artist name on the front display. The USB connection bypasses the iPod/iPhone's DAC and uses the head unit's 1-bit DAC to maximize sound quality. Newer Apple devices with iOS 6.0+ allow you to continue to use your Apple device's touchscreen to navigate your stored music and access music apps; older iPod/iPhone devices will be locked during connection.
    • Passenger Control: In Passenger Control mode, you can navigate the stored music on your iPod/iPhone device through its clickwheel or touchscreen; as well as music apps on an iPhone (iOS 3.0+). Basic playback functions, such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track are still available from the head unit. Advanced music navigation will need to be done from your Apple device. You'll also still be able to view song/artist information on the head unit's LCD.

    Audio Section

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the Sony MEX-BT31PW are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers.

    • Continuous Power Output: 17 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Peak Power Output: 52 watts x 4-channels

4Ch/2V Pre-Outs + Sub Control: The MEX-BT31PW contains two pairs of 2-volt RCA preamp outputs (Front, Rear/Sub). A front pair and another pair that can be set for the rear channels or for non-fading subwoofer operation. When the unit's subwoofer output is activated, the preamp output becomes non-fading and a low pass filter is activated with a selectable cut-off frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off. You can also adjust the slope (1/2/3) of the low-pass crossover. You can adjust the subwoofer preamp output's volume level independently from the head unit's volume control from -10 to +10 in 1dB increments. In addition, you can select the phase of the subwoofer output from Normal or Reverse.

Note: You can connect a subwoofer to this head unit without the need of a separate power amplifier. Simply connect a single subwoofer (4-8 ohm) directly to head unit's left or right rear speaker leads (but not both). Same subwoofer controls apply.

High-Pass Filter: The front & rear speaker outputs offer a selectable high-pass crossover frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off. You can also adjust the slope (1/2/3) of the high-pass crossover.

Advanced Sound Engine: Sony's Advanced Sound Engine creates an ideal in-car sound field with digital signal processing. Advanced Sound Engine contains the following features: EQ7, Listening Position, DM+ Advanced, Rear Bass Enhancer, & Dynamic Loudness.

    • EQ7: You can select an equalizer curve from eight music types - Xplod, Vocal, Edge, Cruise, Space, Gravity, Custom, or Off (Flat). The Custom EQ7 mode allows  you to make  your own equalizer settings. You can adjust the level (+/-6dB) of seven different frequency bands - Band1 (63Hz), Band2 (160Hz), Band3 (400Hz), Band4 (1kHz), Band5 (2.5khz), Band6 (6.3khz), and Band7 (16.0kHz).
    • Listening Position: This unit can change the localization of sound by delaying the sound output from each speaker to suit your position, and simulate a natural sound field with the feeling of being in the center of it wherever you sit in the car. You can choose from Front Right, Front Left, Front Center, or Off. You can also set the subwoofer distance of the subwoofer to Near, Normal, or Far
    • RBE (Rear Bass Enhancer): RBE enhances the bass sound by applying the low-pass filter setting to the rear speakers. This function allows the rear speakers to work as a subwoofer even if there is no subwoofer connected.
    • Dynamic Loudness: Dynamic Loudness refers to compensating for volume level & signal gain.
    • DM+ Advanced: DM+ Advanced improves digitally compressed sound by restoring high frequencies lost in the compression process (works only for USB).

Automatic Level Optimizer: Automatic Level Optimizer analyzes each track's playback level & adjusts the output level to optimize transitions between tracks & sources.

Beep Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.
