I'm very happy overall with this stereo. There are a few things I would change though. First and foremost the display is unreasonably bright, while you can dim the display the buttons do not dim and make it seem like a flashlight is shining in your eyes while driving at night. There wasn't a dedicated wire for a dimmer, you have to do it manually. You can however take the faceplate apart, very carefully, and color in the LEDs and white plastic (I used a blue sharpie pen) and that makes it much much better. There isn't a dedicated bluetooth phone button, the stereo requires you to change sources from Radio or BT Audio to BT Phone before you can make calls, small detail but it gets annoying. It also doesn't display song information while streaming BT audio, from what I've heard there aren't many stereos out there that do but I was expecting it, so heads up. Again, a small detail. The sound quality is good, it's easy to use and overall I'm happy. It just took some time to make the display dim enough to be able to drive at night.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit because of the many good reviews and the fact that it offers so many different ways to interface with my iPhone (USB, AUX input, and Bluetooth), which holds all my tunes. Installation was straight forward and successful the first time. I did have to make one support call, however, as I didn't realize that you had to wire the supplied factory harness adapter to the harness that came with the unit. The installation instructions could have been a little clearer on those points. But the guy who answered the phone at Crutchfield had me squared away within 5 minutes. The sound coming from my 10 year-old factory speakers (with no amp, yet), is startlingly better than it was before. And the factory sub has much more definition and kick. Setting up bluetooth couldn't have been easier. Everything works just liked I hoped and wanted it to. One last thing: The alarm that goes off when you leave the face on is very low decibel and not at all jarring. Yes, you can hear it. But other reviews make it sound like it's some horrible noise you have to hear every time you get out of your car. Far from it. It quickly fades into the background like all the other mellow beeps and ticks that happen when you start or stop your car. If you are looking for an inexpensive yet high-quality way to listen to iTunes through your car stereo, you can't go wrong with this unit. Good job Sony and Crutchfield!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been getting crutchfield mag. for over 10 years now and never ordered anything, I figuring I'd rather buy local, incase of problems or questions or returns. The local big box store had nothing I wanted and I think their customer service is a non existent. So my next step was looking online for what i wanted. I was looking to upgrade my santa fe current stereo to install a sub box and amps. I looked everywhere for a stereo that had everything I wanted, Bluetooth for phone AND music, RDS, next I wanted something that could also hook up an external IPOD, and hands free phone calls. I looked everywhere and figured why settle so I called crutchfield and asked some simple questions then researched online what I wanted. This stereo has it all. It sounds ridiculously clean and has plenty of options to dial in your sound. I bought the mic just to have a nice clean mic instead of me yelling or getting bad echo/feedback, everyone said its sounds as good as a land line. First, excellent customer service. Second I got my order fast and without problems. I cant tell you how nice it is to buy a stereo and get DETAILED, pictured instructions, and the wiring harness AND trim ring. Thats at least an extra $50 anywhere else. I also bought to extended warrenty. I am truley impressed so far. Thanks to the Crutchfield team I am !00% satisfied on everything.

This is a really great product with a lot of functions for the price. You have to read the manual to figure out what everything does, it is not totally intutitive. Bluetooth works well wih the built in microphone, however sometimes the driver cannot be heard when travelling so it may be worth buying the extermal microphone.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this to replace the stock Ford radio in my 1998 Expedition. I was looking to add bluetooth connectivity both for hands-free phone and music as well off my Droid X. I didn't need a lot of radio, just wanted these features. This Sony fit the bill, and was very reasonably priced. It was important to get the OEM Amplifier Inegration kit for this radio as my Expedition has a premium sound system (separate amp between the radio and the speakers). The directions puzzle me a bit on the kit, until I closely looked at the wires and they are nicely labeled, not just colored, though the writing is in faint silver so it is hard to see at first. Hooked it up in about 30 mins, adjusted the pots which anntenuate the sound going from the Sony to the premium sound amp in the truck and it was up and running! One drawback has been the handsfree audio through the front of the radio...people say it sounds distant and "cuts out"--pretty sure it is not the phone but the BT audio connection/mic combo. An external mic will fix that if I get really desperate. Best of all, when the truck dies, I can remove this radio and resell it or pop it into another clucker that doesn't have BT features built in!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great radio. The Bluetooth works great with both phone and music. USB works great also. I use the iPhone 3GS for all and it works great. I have the skyfi2 hooked up to the AUX port and that is also great. This radio DOES have a dimmer, unlike some reviews here. USB with the iPhone seems to not replay if you shut down the car with it hooked up and then restart. (I just unplug and then plug it back in) it then works fine. Radio has alot of adjustments for sound like the EQ 3 and loudness settings. AUX has a loudness adjustment also which works great. You will not be disappointed in this radio. Hooked it up to an 02 galant with the factory Infiniti system. The sound from the factory speakers was much better after this was installed. The harness kit was perfect- 5 wires and then the hookup to the amp w/ the phono plugs! Nigel was excellent with all the questions I had. Down the road I may add the powered sub they have for it. Super quick installation just had a small amount of "filing" to fit the faceplate in correctly.

Bought it to replace my old Sony GT 340; A major improvement over it. The only issue that i have with it is that when you repeat a playlist with your ipod (If using the USB cable) You would have to pick a random song from the beginning of the playlist, and shuffle it again in order for the playlist to repeat again; Besides that its perfect.

Stereo performs as well as advertised. It seems like it's built well and my daughter loves the way it looks in her '02 Honda Civic. The Bluetooth sounds clear through the external mic but you have to place it on the drivers side sun visor or it will not sound right. Overall, not bad and a good value for the price but I only gave it 3 stars as it does lack some simple features such as the Sirius interface doesn't have the capability of direct tuning a channel through the remote.

    Great Budget Deck

Alexander from Bellevue, WA on 1/22/2011

I've owned two of these decks for 2.5 years, one in my car and the other in my wife's car which I got at the same time and installed myself without ever having installled a car stereo before. I am a little mechanically inlcined though. This deck is an awsome budget deck with great sound and options for the money. The previous post about the deck falling apart and going haywire must have been an issue with his particular deck. This stereo has been flawless with it's performance, quality and everytime I park my car I disconnect the face plate and stick it in the glove compartment or under the seat. The USB input is the greatest thing ever added to a car stereo, Good Bye CD'S!!! The Bluetooth comes in clear with seamless transsitions between music and phone. I have the mic on the visor and I do find I have to speak a little louder than usual but I just flip the visor down and it's just fine. I'd rather this than having to hold a phone next to my cheek. I still have one of the decks in my car, the other car was sold a month ago. Cruchfield was great answering any questions I had. Two thumbs and two big toes up.

The deck has good sound! it playes cleen and delivers great quality sound. there are alot of different sound controles to give precise sound adjustment. easy to install and all of the bluetooth instalaion is simple. i really like this deck......only one problem....IT FALLS APART. i have had the deck for around 7 months, and the bass controle has stopped working completly, so i is suck on 8 (of 10). it goes haywire and switches through songs uncontrolably someimes. you dont even want to know what it does when its cold. i will say it handles heat very well. but when it gets cold it wont read disk's, the AUX and USB do not work right, and just the controles in general dont function. i live in montana so the cold is regular inside and out. again i love the sound this deck gives clean no distortion when tuned right. maybe you will have better luck with i holding together.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great unit. Pros: - Great sound - Easy USB searching - Bluetooth audio is an amazing benefit which I wasn't expecting to work so well. I haven't had to use the Aux in at all. -Bluetooth phone works well even without the external mic although sometimes people say the voice is choppy. I may go for the ext mic. - easy overall navigation - install kit for a 2006 Subaru worked great Cons: - It would really be nice to be able to disable the annoying alarm that beeps every time you turn off the car. Who takes off the faceplate anyway? I'm tired of hearing it and explaining to passengers what that annoying sound is. - extra USB in back would have been convenient. I bought a 16GB flash drive which doesn't stick out far and always stays in the unit.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Crutchfield master sheet for my vehicle was excellent and made installation a breeze. The receiver is an improvement over the factory unit in my 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 QC. The system looks nice in the dashboard. I primarily stream Pandora to the unit via bluetooth and it works very well. Any glitches I would blame on my Blackberry Storm II. The unit connects quickly to the phone. With the optional external microphone, I can make calls in a normal voice and be heard clearly. The backlighting around the volume knob is bright at night. I plan to adjust it with a black marker.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the most part, I absolutely love this receiver. I put it in a 98 Toyota Tacoma a couple of weeks ago and have been very impressed with the Ipod interface and with the ability to load music on thumb drive and listen. The major drawback that others have mentioned is that there is no dimmer on the radio so it is rather bright at night. Not sure why Sony did not put a dimmer on but they did not. The other consideration that you may want to consider is that the usb port is in the front so there is an increased likelyhood of bumping whatever usb device that you have placed in the receiver and breaking something. That has not happened to me but I saw it as a possiblity unloading the truck one day. So consider the merits of the receivers with the rear usb input. Overall, I am very pleased with the unit and wish I had installed one years ago.

Ordered my Sony deck, shipped same day, got it 3 days later. Got it installed in one hour. The deck itself looks good, easy to understand controls once you read the manual. Paired my phone with no problems, easily adjusted the setup for using the BT with the external mic that I also had installed. I have to agree with some of the comments about the brightness of the main knob. It is a bit too bright. Other than that, it looks very good. I'm happy that I made the move to the new deck. I've had the factory cassette/radio deck for the past 16 years. Now I can finally play CDs, connect my Ipod, and go BT for my phone. Now I'm feeling the need for speed..er...speakers :)

JohnnyB from Orlando, FL on 11/5/2010

This radio is an overall great performer. The bluetooth connectivity has never given me any issues, and the free external mic was a nice bonus! The main complaint I have is the USB connectivity. It has an extremely hard time remembering it's place on my iPhone when reconnected. Sometimes I will get no audio, and other times it will play a few seconds that it still has in it's buffer and then it cuts out. I am constantly having to pull the USB and reconnect it to get it "resynced."

I bought this radio as a gift and I am not impressed at all. Sony needs to catch up with technology. The main reason I chose this unit was for the blue tooth phone option. It works for receiving calls but does not provide caller ID, because it does not sync your phone book , you can only make calls if you have your voice activated settings in place. It is not easy to use or worth the money. To say I'm less than pleased is an under statement. I should have gotten the Pioneer DEH 6200 BT it is a much better radio and easier to use. Save yourself the aggravation and buy the Pioneer you will be happy you did.

When I get in the car it connects right away. For my Itouch it is a different story. I have to manually go into the general setting on my I touch every time I want to connect. Not the Players fault so I did not take away from the rating just annoying probably an Apple thing. I have not tested the Cd player but I'm sure it works fine. Call quality is kind of spacey but that was t be expected I don't care if it sound hollow to the caller as long as I can hear them clearly it's all good.

Forgot how much an aftermarket stereo improves even stock speakers. Great sound and EQ options, simple menus (once you get familiar with them), and screen is not washed out in the sun. Bluetooth audio is awesome, but I haven't used the phone calling option yet...besides, my exhaust system will likely drown it out anyway. However, I also purchased it for the expansion benefits: subwoofer, bluetooth w/ mic input, HD radio, and satellite radio. Unlike some other reviews, I don't find the white backlight annoying (I have a Tacoma). You can't beat the free install kit and wiring harness.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A great list of features for the price. Bluetooth works well, and the Ipod controls are a nice touch as well. Here are my quirks though... 1. When turning on the HU, you have to select a source, why not default to the last source used? 2. Bluetooth phone does not connect automatically?!?! So every time I get into my vehicle, I have to first select a source, then reconnect to my phone so I can accept a call. 3. The presets for FM and Sirius are awkward. When you reach the end of the first set of presets, it rolls over into the next set, instead of going to the first preset in the current set. I like to have my presets separated by genre... so if I am in the mood for rock I select Preset set #1... talk radio would be on set #2 etc. This is not much of an issue if you are pushing the 1-6 buttons on the unit, but it a larger vehicle like my Excursion it's easier to use the remote and scroll through the presets using the arrows. I installed this into a 2005 Excursion using the supplied install kit. No issues and even got an adapter to power the OEM DVD unit and route the audio into the AUX input of the HU.

Not much that I need to add to the other reviews here, this is a great unit at a great price with an awesome feature set. I love how well the bluetooth integration works, the phone feature is fantastic, and the built-in mic (it's behind the removable faceplate) works fine - I've been told my voice quality isn't as good as when I'm speaking directly into the phone, but that's to be expected in the poor audio environment of a moving vehicle. The good news is the quality is more than good enough for the person on the other end to hear and understand me. My ONLY complaint about this unit is how bright the lights on the panel are. The dim function apparently only applies to the display - it doesn't affect the button backlights. I'll live w/it, but the white ring that surrounds the rotary dial is REALLY annoying at night. I'll probably put tape or something over it to make it less distracting.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The price and free shipping were excellent. The stereo shop in town wanted $90.00 more for the same unit. The extras, wiring kit and face plate and instructions were spot on. Unfortunately I could not use the wiring harness adapter as my vehicle already had an aftermarket stereo where they cut my factory wires. The install would have been really easy if I could have used it. I had to call customer care during the course of the install and they were great. I was disapointed to learn that my Verizon Dare phone was not compatible with the stereo. My wifes LG Voyager was compatible and worked great. The person on the other end of the line could not tell they were talking through the car speakers/mic. I did not install the optional mic and the unit works great. I only wish my phone would have worked with the unit, that is why I rated it 4 stars instead of five. Crutchfield the kit and service were both great, you are setting a high standard for others to follow.

First things first. Thank you to Crutchfiled for a well designed and searchable web site with all the tools to make an informed decision. The Sony MEX-BT3800U a definite upgrade over the original stereo in the 2000 Honda Civic EX. The 52W x 4 brought the speakers to life with very clean sound. The EQ3 settings are great and enhance the type of music to your liking. If you have an IPod - you will love it through this unit. Be SAFE and Handsfree with the Bluetooth operations - Awesome feature! Too many additional features to list, for the price you will not be disappointed.

I have had a sony walkman for about a year that I have not used since I got an iphone. It plugs into this unit via the USB cable and the radio is able to control all content. Sounds great, but it does take almost 15 - 20 seconds to builfd the library every time the car is turned on, or switching to the USB source. My Iphone 3GS had no problem hooking up to it via bluetooth for music or phone service. The only other problem is the mic on the unit is behind the face plate in my maxima so I have to get the external mic.

I recently got an HTC Incredible and was interested in streaming podcasts and Pandora to my car stereo. I bought this head unit mainly for the bluetooth capability but also it had an AUX port just in case the bluetooth stunk. I've used the blueooth in downtown Baltimore, DC and on the road in rural Pennsylvania and it has worked great! The phone calls are good enough (and people can hear me well) but the streaming audio is awesome. The display is certainly bright enough in direct sunlight and can be dimmed at night. The knob and buttons feel sturdy. I bought the extra stuff that Crutchfield recommended and installation was relatively easy. Called the help line twice and got my answers fairly quickly. I would recommend this head unit and recommend buying from Crutchfield.

I had the upgraded factory stereo in the truck. But I was also using a BT for calls and my BB books; music etc. I wanted ONE thing to do it all. This does. It met every requirement I had asked for. Installation was fairly easy. Just takes time and patience. It has a lot of advanced options; so if that's not what you want; you can just use the preset settings. The instruction booklet is quite helpful; if you don't mind skipping back and forth thru the book a gazillion times. All in all I am quite satisifed w/ this product. I didn't change speakers; add extra speaker components, etc. Other than the addition of this receiver; it's all factory. The sound is very clear and the quality is terrific. Since I listen to oldies; classical; country; books; etc. it was important that they all have high quality sound. With this Sony, they all sound wonderful. My family said they couldn't hear me with my BT going thru the stereo. Now it's loud and clear! With the installation kit; it all looks like it's been there forever.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered this unit on a Friday & it was sitting at my door step the next day (only live 2 hours from Crutchfield) & it only took 30 Minutes to install (most of that was soldering the wiring harnesses together) thanks to Crutchfield's detailed instructions. This HU makes my factory speakers in my 06 Sonata sound like aftermarket. Streaming audio via Bluetooth with my Moto Droid is sweet!!! You can even skip forward or back with the included remote. HU reconnects to phone automatically when key is in on/acc/crank position As others have stated, the unit does not store phonebook or display which is a plus for me, as I do not want my passengers viewing who's calling me. As far as the Bluetooth for calls, the internal mic does excellent in picking up my voice (unlike reviews I've read) but if I turn the volume to loud the person on the other end say's that they can hear their selves echo back. So I'm still testing this to get the right volume for me & the person on the other end. FM radio sounds excellent from this unit (RDS & PTY is nice) I have not played a CD yet because I forgot to take out the only CD I own in the old HU. LOL!!!!!!!! Also have not tried the USB yet Just like others have said, that white light under the knob is very bright at night and not adjustable. Overall I am happy with this unit

This unit has a lot of features and is well worth the price. The bluetooth cuts in and out when streaming audio but since no one else has complained about it's likely my HTC HD2 that is at fault for that. AUX port lets me use my phone as my primary audio source which was the whole intent of buying this unit. No more CD's!!! and being able to take calls via bluetooth, and use voice dial to make them seals the deal on this unit. I am doing fine without the external mic as well. I've had my Yukon for 10 yrs, the CD player finally gave out so I ordered this nice Sony BT3800U. I love it. I should've done this years ago. I love that it has bluetooth for handsfree calling and the USB front interface is great so I can plug in my own music. So far the built in mic seems fine for calls. Once I had the adapter wired up to the Sony wires this went in with only one issue...the directions made it look like you connect Sony's blue/white (amp on/off) to the blue factory wire but in fact it needed to go to the pink wire on the onstar plug. One phone call to tech support and I was blasting tunes. At first I was concerned about losing onstar (though I don't subscribe) then I found out since it's analog (2001) it doesn't work any more anyway. This stereo fit great, looks great, sounds even better than I thought. I've found the xplod sound setting seems the best overall for various types of music and has a definite quality increase over the factory system, even on factory speakers.

Installed this unit in a 2006 Sonata. Wiring harness was a snap to work out and the supplied dash mount worked well, aside from being a different color. The Sony fired right up and worked very well with some EQ tweaking. Bluetooth support is truly outstanding; it streams internet radio beautifully and seamlessly hands off music or calls when I stop the car. I have tried many Bluetooth solutions and I cannot emphasize enough just how pleased I am with the way the Sony does this. MP3s also work very well off a thumbdrive. The only con for me is the white trim ring. It is REALLY bright and distracting at night. I will probably mod the head to fix this. But other than that, very good choice.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in 2003 Honda Element - replaced a Pioneer Double DIN that blew out after just over a year. Bluetooth syncs easily and works flawlessly everytime on my Blackberry Bold (the Pioneer was always very touchy). USB and Aux also work well and I love that this deck supports RDS. My last car to have that was back in 2001...I can't believe how slowly it's catching on. Between USB and Bluetooth audio to the phone, I have yet to try the CD player, but the controls work well with USB and I image they'd be just as good for that. EQ functions are easy to operate and the presets really change up the sound for various types of music. 17W x 4 RMS seemed to drive my 6.5 Pioneer 3-ways alright, but I already threw in a Sony XM4S amp to take the load off the deck. I'm pretty sure heat claimed the life of the Pioneer, and this one seems to get even hotter (I think I've seen this in other reviews as well), but the speakers are rated at 35W nominal power, so that may be a factor. Paired with some factory speakers, I don't think there'd be any problem. In summary: PROS: -Easy, effective EQ settings -Lots of outputs (4CH + Sub) -Lots of inputs (front aux, USB, BT, rear changer) -BT syncs very quickly and without fail -RDS! CONS: -Only one color scheme (but I like it, so no points off) -Might run a little hot on internal amp -BT mic jack does not fit my old Pioneer mic (industry standards people!)

I bought this Sony unit to install in my Land Rover. Asthetically it blends in very well with my dash. I can't say enough good about this unit. The main feature I bought it for was the Bluetooth audio. It syncs flawlessly with my mobile phone and the streaming audio quality is superb! The controls are very easy to figure out. I didn't even have to get out the manual. The FM tuner is extremely good. It gets in stations I didn't even know existed in my area! The sound quality is good too considering I am not using any external amps. I am so impressed I am planning on purchasing another one and installing it in my BMW. My only concern is the heat this unit puts out. Sony amps tend to run very hot. I would not recommend installing this in a tight space. I have a lot of extra room behind the dash in my Rover and just to be on the safe side I fashioned an additional copper heat sink that I attached to the rear of the unit to help dissipate the heat. It's probably not necessary but it can't hurt either. I don't think you could find a nicer head unit with the same features for less money. It's a great value!

Just bought a 2010 Honda CR-V LX because I didn't want to spend literally thousands for rather menial upgrades. Honda wanted $30,000 for the EX-L edition just to get Bluetooth (I paid $21,000 for a brand new LX). So, off to Crutchfield I went. Don't order stuff very much like I once did, but this Sony 3800 caught my eye. For this price shipped with everything I needed, it was a no-brainer. Just arrived last night, and tool about 30 minutes to install, which was simple with the free install kit and wiring harness Crutchfield supplied. I mean to tell you, this unit SMOKES the factory radio, and made the factory speakers come alive (sounds like a Bose system I once had in a Maxima). I was blow away, and I haven't even replaced the factory speakers yet. Bluetooth? Works awesome using my BlackBerry 8530 and streaming Pandora, Slacker or anything else. No aux input needed - A2DP works great and there are no wires. Finally, no wires! The phone part of the Bluetooth works perfectly also, just as good as factory (actually, better), and that's using the built-in microphone also. Having everything I could possibly need and this is the best upgrade in a car I've ever bought. It's so nice to be driving, streaming Pandora over my BlackBerry to this Sony (and jamming nicely, I might add), and have everything pause automatically when I get a call. After the call is done, Pandora going back to streaming just where I left off. Thanks Crutchfield!

This deck does everything I was hoping for and more. Installation was a snap with the included guides and harness. Pros: - Bluetooth support is bulletproof. Streaming music from my phone is flawless and simple. - Music fades in when changing sources so if you have it too loud it won't scare the crap out of you. - Nice remote that is easy to use. (not too many buttons) - Navigation through sources and functions is easy and fast - Nice integration of phone call functions Cons: - Bluetooth mic could be better but it is by no means bad. I wouldn't pay for the external until you try the built in one. - Some say the white ring is too bright, I found it to be bright but its not ridiculous. I can't say I have anything to compare this to but I am very happy with my choice. I don't know that I could have gotten all these features for less money and I can't see anything that this deck is missing that I would have gotten if I had spent more. Overall a very solid choice in this price range. I installed this in place of the factory deck, but FYI in the past I have had nothing but Alpine. Not sure I'll go back after using this one!

After researching various units and trips to the local car audio stores, I kept coming back to the BT3800. I wanted something to replace the factory unit in my Montero. I wanted iPod controls and built in blue tooth. This unit has all of these features. I purchased two of them at the same time, one for the family car and one for my SUV. The built in bluetooth synced perfectly with both my wife's Sony 580i and my LG Vu 920. I thought about getting an external mic, but it is so not needed. The one that is behind the faceplate works excellent. People say it sounds very clear, I have never had a complaint. The iPod controls are great as well. I've had the HU installed for about 2 weeks and I'm very happy with it. I bought the Sony unit to replace a JVC unit that I installed about 9 months ago. No matter what I did, I could not get the JVC unit to sound good in my truck with aftermarket Polk speakers. It's hard to get a good sound in a truck without a sub, and I don't have one. That's one reason I bought the Sony unit. It has an option to select "loud" when the volume is low. It brings out more bass and doesn't make it sound tinny like the old unit did. The Sony HU sounds really good for not having a sub. It also has physical buttons to press for preset stations. I like that a lot. The JVC unit was menu driven to select the presets and that drove me nuts, but maybe I'm old school. I also bought the Sony unit for the BT. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it works. I bought the external mic, which I would recommend. The ability to adjust the BT volume over the speakers is great. My phone links up automatically when I start the truck, and I use the voice command to dial most of my calls. The reason I rated it 4 out of 5 is because nothing is perfect. I agree that the chime alarm (that sounds when you don't remove the faceplate before turning off the vehical) is unnecessary, but not obnoxious. I would not let that sway your decision to buy the unit. The backlighting of the faceplate could be toned down a touch. It is bright, but again, not a deal breaker.

Additionally, it can play and browse your ipod songs using the buttons in the radio. The included remote control works like a charm! The sound quality is superb and the buttons and menu are easy to work with. The only concerns are that you cannot see the display clearly when there is sunlight on your dash and the wire for connecting the external microphone is relatively short. I did not get an external mic, but if I decide to get one I would prefer not to open up radio compartment to connect it. A longer extension would bring it to the outside making you able to connect the mic without opeing up the radio compartment. All in all, a great item. Car-specific radio mount and the harness was included by Crutchfield.

I also really like the bluetooth feature. It allows me to use my cell phone in a safe manner. The preinstalled mic works pretty well... certainly good enough that I don't need to buy the bluetooth mic accessory. The controls are straight forward, much easier than other models I looked at. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit with lots of hope for using the Bluetooth A2DP audio profile in my iPhone, and I have not been disappointed. I found that the audio quality is very good with plenty of frequency response. And, let's face it, not having to connect a cable to listen to the audio from my iPhone is a nice feature, too. Up to this point, I have yet to experience a BT disconnection or any interruption in sound. A2DP profile pairing takes about twice as long as BT phone pairing (usually around a minute for both the be available), but so far it has paired with the Sony every time. There is a background hiss at higher volume levels (from a digital connection?), but I have not compared it to the USB connection's audio quality to determine if it is an issue with the unit, or with the A2DP profile itself. The only reason this unit doesn't get a perfect score is because of the BT phone volume; it is very low when listening to your caller and requires the unit's volume be turned way up. Sony did add a nice feature where it de-coupled the volume of the BT phone from other the audio sources so that you don't get your ears blown out once the call ends. I have also had some comments that I sound distant when speaking, even thought I purchased the external microphone. But, it works, it's convenient, and it will keep me from getting a ticket.

    decent car audio receiver

hli from Philadelphia, PA on 4/25/2010

easy installation but it takes a while to do the cable adapter. operation of the receiver is easy to understand. sound quality is excellent comparing with my old accord 6 disc cd changer. the outstanding part of this reveiver is the blue tooth function. i would give four stars for the bult in microphone(not great but working reasonably). can't complain to much for this price. the bule tooth audio streaming is a very nice feature and it works well. one thing does annoy me - the display. when i put my sunglasses on during day time driving, it's very hard to read but fine without sunglasses. overall, this is a good product for this price.

Great stereo, love all the features. The only thing I do not like is the volume control location on the remote. You have to slide the remote up in your hand so your thumb reaches the volume, now you are hanging on to just the back end of the remote.

I am driving a 2010 Silverado crew cab WT. I travel and am in my truck all day. I compared all the BT radios that also had satellite and ipod capability. I chose this one and I am very happy. The BT phone calls are very clear. I am told I also sound very clear. I did add the external mic and have never tried the internal one. The one feature that I would have liked to have was for the radio to download my contacts. You can use voice dialing but it is only as good as the voice dialing in your phone. This radio also works very well with my IPOD touch and I find it easy to navigate through my Ipod content with the radio controls. The front usb also charges the ipod. I installed a satellite radio which is controlled through the Sony head. It sounds great. I do have a small problem in that the only way I can see to tune the satellite is to use the seek buttons. If you are on channel 1, it takes a long of time to go to say channel 121. I solved this by using one of the three sets of saved satellite stations to save every 25th channel. that way I can get close using the push buttons and then scroll. I use the other two sets of saved stations for Music on one and sports/news on the other. I would buy this again. In fact I am considering buying this for my daughter in college for the bt capability.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this myself in a Toyota Matrix and all went smoothly. We love all of the features. Bluetooth setup was easy even with my horrible, ancient smartphone so I am certain it will go great when I upgrade in May. Bluetooth syncs when I get in the car and turn it on without a hitch. The first time someone called and the music stopped and the phone rang over the speakers was so cool. I do not have the external mic and have not had problems with people hearing me. They say it just sounds a little choppy because of they way it cuts off after you have spoken. It is so much safer than holding the phone to your ear. Now if they can just get it to show my text messages on the screen. Auxiliary input works fine with my external xm satellite receiver. I have used the usb input with both a flash drive loaded with music files and my daughters iphone. Takes a little bit to get the hang of navigating the songs with the stereo but that is the case with anything that squeezes this many features into something so small. Can't see the labels at night but eventually I will know them by memory and it won't be a problem.

FM: Excellent reception. Has 'RDS' Radio Data System. Name of song and station info for many stations displayed. Not many have this. CD: Excellent. Quick-BrowZer® with Jump Mode and ZappinT technology is cool. BT: Easy initial sync, auto sync everytime. Auto sync with last device connected. My phone S.E. w518a, always great connection. BT AUDIO: Great sound quality. Hit seek (on radio or steering wheel) and jog to next song on phone. COOL. BT PHONE: Excellent. Hear everybody great. Turn up or down volume of stereo as needed. Comfortably interrupts any music source to let you know incoming call. Push of button answers, push hangs up, two pushes redials last #. Does NOT have Phone Book Access Profile. No caller ID or even calling # displayed. To see who it is, you look at your phone or answer without knowing. Dial from phone. MIC: external mic a MUST, however, it works EXCELLENT and you are clearly heard. AUX: Great. Sounds fine for music and voice. IPOD use fine. NO rear AUX but they say you can buy adapter to change your CD changer control to a rear AUX. Have not tried USB. DISPLAY: Face lights too bright. You can dim display, but not face lights. You can shut radio off to standby, showing time with lights on, or you can easily power it completely off and no light at all shows. Face lights don't bother me anymore & I do a lot of night driving. No alarm that reminds you to remove the face when you cut power. REMOTE: Good. Basic controls.

This was a big step up technologically for me. I was replacing the broken in dash Infinity 6 disk changer system in a 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor, pretty old tech-wise and this complicated my install badly. I got the unit in the truck and wow what a difference. I can't use 8" Pioneer free air I had mounted in place of my factory Infinity sub because I had to bypass the factory amp, but the sound is still rich and big without it. Ease of use is OK here, but interfacing with a product like the iPhone/iPod can be tricky because the UI is so well crafted. Bluetooth works really well, audio streaming work like a champ from the iPhone 3G, no transport control, but thats the iPhone's fault. Calls switch seamlessly from the USB audio on my iPhone, it hiccups the iPod audio up occasionally though. CD player is top notch sounding with a great 120db S-N ratio. The EQs they have are OK, the Xplod is definitely the way to go, the others sound flat. I can't wait to hear it with my sub, amp is on it's way now!

The facotry unit in my 4runner just died and i was going to go back to the dealer for a replacement but the dealer parts person suggested an after market unit as it would be cheaper and i could get features like Bluetooth, ipod, USB, etc. I ordered this SONY unit and it came with everything I needed to do the install. Took about 1-1/2 hrs to install and this unit is everything I could ask for. Noticed that on CD's that I had burned it showed the album label and song label. The bluetooth function works ok for incomming calls but to make outgoing calls its a hassel to switch functions. Also, they should just inclued the external mike as the internal one does not work very well. Since the original unit was a double height unit this unit came with a spacer/box and it works great for storing the remote.

Fast delivery. Extremely easy installation with supplied info and kit. It would be a mistake to pay someone to install on this vehicle. Improvement over stock radio is phenomenal. No comparison in sound quality. I'm between major markets - 50 miles from each, so HD radio not great for this area. Can add HD tuner later if desired. I get at least twice as many FM stations clearly now. Mostly I listen podcasts on my Ipod, and the interface with this unit is great. That was my main impetus to upgrade and lose the crummy FM transmitter. The bluetooth works fine. Pairs automatically. Built in mic works as least as well as visor mounted mic in my other car - and that interior is a lot quiter than the truck. I'm very pleased with this purchase. Tech support helped me hard wire in my gps unit too. Picked up $5 cigarette lighter/plug at parts store and wired in the red and black wires with the stereo harness. Dropped the gps cord down behind the dash and plugged it in. Especially helpful since the truck's socket stays hot when the ignition's off. No more drained battery and no cords hanging over the dash.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted hands free calling and ability to stream audio from my phone; the BT3800U seemed to fit the bill for features and price. I read in reviews that the built in microphone wasn't going to cut it (it didn't) so I bought the remote mic. The Bluetooth streaming audio sound is surprisingly good. Overall, I am pleased with the Bluetooth operation and the sound quality (CD, FM, USB AAC, etc.) is pretty much what I expected. It is easy to figure out and operate. All said however I am returning it for three reasons. First, the illumination on the ring around the volume knob and the control keys is too bright and distracting at night - you can't dim these features - and the whole car interior is bathed in light. Secondly, there is an alarm that reminds you to remove the face when you cut power. You get this dorky alarm over the car speakers, it can't be disabled, and it gets old fast. I tried to justify living with these faults but couldn't and it's the third thing about the Sony that solidified my decision for it's replacement. The price is very appealing for the feature set, but you have to buy the external mic. to really make it work and that drives the price up. Compare features with the Kenwood KDC-X994 and for $60 more you get a LOT more audio features and controls, 2 yr warranty, total control over the illumination and alarms, microphone is included. I am a Sony fan but this one has some maddening faults.

I bought two of this unit for my 2001 passat and 2000 accord. the handsfree calling is the best part and my reason for getting this. The one improvement that I would suggest is that they add a USB port in the back of the unit because it's easy to knock off the USB connector in the front. All in all I am pretty happy with my purchases.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this system for the capability of syncing my iPhone via bluetooth. I wanted a stereo that would easily pair both phone and music player features of my iPhone. This system does this brilliantly! I am very impressed with how every time I turn on the vehicle the stereo pairs with my phone and is ready for me to hit play, no hesitation. When a call comes in or I make a call, the music fades out and I just speak into thin air. Everyone says my voice comes through clearly and theirs sound just fine over the audio system. The install was fairly easy in a 2003 Dodge Durango. I haven't installed a stereo since I was a kid, but this was done in a evening after work. One minor hiccup in the instructions, but tech support nailed the problem instantly. Do not hesitate to contact Tech Support if you run into any problems. They rule!
