Love the way this stereo works. Great to have Pandora streaming and map instructions on my Android working seamlessly...and still be able to take a phone call. Very good wish it had a CD button and a RADIO button, but hey. Very good. Several years ago I bought a JVC for my wife...controls on that drive me crazy to this day. Sony was a great choice...moving it to my new car!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I drive 600 miles a week , and the reason I bought a new stereo was to be able to listen to my iPhone and ipod throught the car stereo. It has Bluetooth usb and audio input. It works great! I love using Bluetooth with the iphone. What really makes me the happiest however is the Bluetooth phone connection. It is seamless. I tlak on the phone alot when I am on the road and used my earbods. The phone fidelity and mic are great. I can set up one touch dialing, and if I am on the phone when I get into the car, it automatically switches to the Sony. When I plug in my earbuds before turning the car off, it automatically switches back. I also use XM radio and it works great with the optional XM receiver. I have used this stero for a month, so I can't tell you how durable it is, but so far I am a very haooy driver!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, you can't beat the value this unit offers. Its packed with features including Bluetooth, Sat Radio, SWC capable and the list goes on and on. Many units costing twice this much don't come with these features. My wife wanted all these features in her new car. I got her a new stereo for Christmas and this unit saved me a lot of cash!!

Pros: Tons of feature at very reasonable price.

Cons: The SWC connector isn't very secure. When you plug in the 1/8 jack make sure its in all the way and tape it up so it doesn't fall out.

    Great value

I wanted a good tuner with Bluetooth phone option CD player. I got all I wanted and more. Great system for the money.

Pros: Priced right. Sony quality. Very user friendly.

Cons: Needed more information on which harness to order for infinity system.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got this for the wife as an early christmas present. She loves it. Installation was straight forward. Sound quality is excellent. Is not compatable with OEM sirriusXM radio, so be sure and order an aftermarket receiver for that if you are expecting to keep that feature.

Pros: Set up was easy, including the Bluetooth sync with her phone. Display color choices are really cool.

Cons: Did not work with OEM sirriusXM radio, had to go out to a big-box electronics store to get an aftermarket tuner. AM radio receiver doesn't work well with OEM in-the-back-window antenna. Works fine with an aftermarket one.

So far so good, all the features I wanted

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit replaced the stock CD/tuner in the family van (2005 Honda). Only installed a week ago, but so far so good. Crutchfield provided all required parts, tools, harnesses, instructions. Installation was easy. The only minor hitch was that I had to call tech help to confirm harness wiring (which wires get capped off). But the tech help was knowledgeable and things were sorted out quickly. Blue tooth audio, phone, and Pandora works great from my HTC Rezound. No issues.

Pros: All the features you need (USB, coaxial, bluetooth, Pandora). Fits well. Call me old school, but I like having a knob to turn for volume control.

Cons: I prefer a simpler, more classic look. It's a bit out of place in a minivan, but it was relatively inexpensive and gets the job done. 3 stars for coolness from me. Most 16 year olds would probably give it a 5.

With the full color spectrum, it is easy to match the deck to the rest of your interior lights, which is always a bonus. or, you can create your own color (yes, you can tweek the colors and create your own, they have some presets like 'Sunset', which is an orange/amber color). The Bluetooth pairing system works great with my Droid3, hands free calls. the EQ has 7 settings, and a separate Sub volume control, which i love the most. When i wanna listen to a bass-heavy song, i crank up the sub volume, if i want to listen to some Rock/Metal, i turn it down. I drive a truck, with 1200 watts of stereo crammed into a standard cab. Driving over railroad tracks with Bass way up, it has never skipped.

Pros: -Customizeable colors -Bluetooth for Handsfree / Pandora (who needs XM with pandora?) -7chan EQ + Sub Volume

Cons: So many options it can be a little overwhelming at first setup, but with time, you can get your perfect sound/light setup.

Excellent head unit with minor drawbacks

Semvhu from Cullman, AL on 11/13/2012

    2005 Honda Civic
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this head unit to replace the stock unit in my 2005 Honda Civic LX sedan. It works just fine in my car and looks good installed (Crutchfield's excellent freebies helped with that). Value: The head unit was a good price for what I was looking for, though a little more than I wanted to spend; ultimately its value is equal to that of others I considered. Sound Quality: It sounds great from every source I've tried; Bluetooth calls are clear, radio reception is excellent, USB with my iPhone tunes or Pandora sounds great, etc. I'm even using my stock speakers for now and it sounds just fine. Ease of Use: Swapping between modes is easy with just pressing a single button to swap around. If you want to listen to your Apple device, just plug it in and it starts playing where you left off; occasionally it has forgotten where it was at on audio books, but I chalk that up to my iPhone instead of the head unit. Pandora use works great. Pair your phone via Bluetooth and you can make voice-activated calls with a press of a couple of buttons. Setting radio stations and changing them is a breeze, though the radio buttons are a bit small for my big fat American fingers. Coolness Factor: The radio does look great and the ever changing light colors are slick. The color changes can be disabled if you don't care for it. Build Quality: Typically well built Sony product. My biggest gripe is here as the radio is tough to see in daylight. It's glossy and not as bright as it could be.

Pros: Excellent head unit and I'd recommend it to anyone that wants built-in iPhone controls, Bluetooth, Pandora, and the works.

Cons: The glossy screen makes it tough for me to see in daylight. If it wasn't quite so reflective and the screen was more brightly lit, it would be easy to see. It's just fine at night, though, even with the illumination function working (it dims when you turn your headlights on).

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent service Crutchfield, as usual. Had a question before ordering and it was promptly answered by a chat advisor online. Ordered the radio Friday and it shipped the same day, free. Got it Monday. Had everything needed to install in a 2001 Jeep Wrangler. All instructions were exact. I wanted to have one thing clarified and called an advisor. He knew the answer off the top of his head. Total install time start to finish 2 hours. As for the radio, excellent product for the money. Wanted an inexpensive (relatively) BT radio with XM. Sound quality is great on the Phone. Typical Sony, a little complicated menu, but that is easily overcome. Too many "features". Crutchfield always comes through. Thanks.

Pros: Everything needed to install. SImple, easy to use instructions. Great value radio with great phone clarity.

    Cons: Little complicated menu.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had this product for about a month now. Everything works perfectly. I have had two previous decks (not Sony) with Bluetooth that would glitch from time to time or have trouble pairing. This product pairs smoothly to my phone every time and it hasn't glitched once. The only complaint I have is I wish it would store my phone as the primary phone to automatically pair with every time I get in - BUT it automatically pairs with the phone it was most recently paired with. (e.g. So if my husband's phone was the last phone to be paired to the Bluetooth, the next time I get in my car I have to manually pair my phone to connect to Bluetooth.) It would only become an issue if we actually shared the car on a daily basis, but I just wanted to through it out there in case someone looking at this deck does share a vehicle. Over-all I am very happy with this deck and would recommend it!

Pros: Everything works smoothly, no glitches with Bluetooth & it's easy to program and navigate through the controls.

Cons: It doesn't store a primary device to automatically pair the Bluetooth. When my phone was not the last device to be paired with the deck, I have to manually connect it - even if it's the only device in the car that can be paired.

I needed to replace factory unit as it had died. this unit meets all the needs I have and more. As mentioned in other posts the user interface is rather frustrating at first. However once you get the hang of it, it is not too bad. Another reason I like this is that I was able to setup hands free phone support for my Android via blue tooth. Works very well, in addition Pandora is also a nice plus.

Pros: Very good sound on factory speakers, display easy to read, may good features for the price

Cons: Instructions for install not real clear, user interface a bit of a learning curve.

I bought this receiver mainly because I wanted to add Bluetooth capability to my car...the Bluetooth works great, I love the Pandora support with the ability to control your stations right from the head unit, I rarely listen to the old FM radio anymore. Very happy with the sound quality; I have 6 speakers and 4 tweeters being powered by this stereo without a problem, also have 2 12" kickers in the back which are powered by a separate amp. Overall very happy with this product, just wish it was a tad bit easier to operate and had HD Radio, but a great and fairly cost effective, especially if you are looking to add Bluetooth media streaming and hands-free calling

Pros: Bluetooth capability, sound quality, display

Cons: A little difficult to figure out, no HD radio

    The Physical Layout

Chex from Los Angeles, CA on 9/23/2012

    1999 Nissan Altima
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit primarily for three reasons: 1. I wanted a unit to play back from my Android device via Blue Tooth 2. I wanted a unit with more than a 3-band EQ 3. I wanted a unit with numerical buttons to easily select a radio station Using my Samsung s3 with the Blue Tooth connection works perfectly. I am able to skip tracks, fast forward, pause, etc without touching the phone. Incoming calls are a breeze to answer, it displays the contact information, and pairing it up was simple. The EQ on the device is great in terms of sound and poor in terms of user interface. If you need to change the EQ, you're going to need to pull over and do it, the menu is buried within other menus. A graphical band EQ would have been a great feature. The numerical buttons work great for selecting a radio station, but not so great for other functions such as selecting pause. The buttons are freaking tiny and really close together. You're bound to accidentally press the wrong button. The number 6 pauses a track, and the number 5 is for a ZAP feature for CDs, I have pressed 5 instead of 6 so many times already and the ZAP feature is used to skip songs... very annoying. This was the only radio that didn't have a large touch screen that met my criteria. It is an okay radio. Not great, not too bad. If you don't need a radio with numeric buttons, consider another one.

Pros: Easy to use Blue Tooth feature. Works great with m Samsung s3 Andriod device. Cool colors.

Cons: The physical layout of the device is counter intuitive. For example: the pause button is the button labeled with a "6" which is a small button that also happens to be next to a "ZAP" button designed to skip through songs in a CD.... several times already I have hit ZAP instead of Pause. You cannot see the display at all in direct sunlight.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a stereo that worked well with Bluetooth, and my Samsung Galaxy S3. Crutchfield recommended this Sony because it plays well with the Android operating system. No more wires! I get into my car, hit play on google play music, and i'm ready for the road. Voice call ring through, and i've heard the voice quality on the other end is great. This is exactly what i was looking for. In case anybody was wondering, my mp3's sound great streaming through this Sony unit, i can't even tell this difference compared to running it through an Aux cable. Crutchfield walked me through some of the install which was pretty ease. My only gripe with this unit would be that the faceplate sits really deep in the dash making it difficult to remove, and put back in.

Pros: Great Bluetooth phone, and streaming! Great sound

Cons: Not a perfect fit for the face plate. It looks great, just tough to remove.

Pros: Great set of features. The Bluetooth works very well with my iPhone The USB connection charges my devices

Cons: None related to the stereo that I've come across yet.......but the enclosure that was recommended isn't quite what I had hoped for. It's adequate and fit the car fine, but I don't care for how far recessed the stereo ends up being in the enclosure.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit replaced my factory unit in my Jeep Wrangler. I had no problems installing it and it fit perfectly using the supplied install kit. The unit is relatively easy to use and has a good display. The screen is easy on the eyes and not too complex. I was able to match the color to the same as my gauges. The supplied microphone works well and I have it installed on my visor, which initially concerned me since I have a soft top and thought there would be too much wind noise. The Bluetooth streaming abilities work great with no problems streaming music from my phone. I would recommend this unit highly.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this receiver and one set of speakers to replace the factory CD changer that finally broke after 9 years. Upon urging of my technology-savy daughter to get the latest technology, I splurged on bluetooth connectivity, Pandora, and Sirius ready capabilites. The unit was fairly easy to install - we had some trouble with replacing the front speakers, but a quick call to Crutchfield - on a Sunday mind you!! - made it easy to figure out. If we had bought this unit elsewhere with no customer support, we would have spent many extra hours needlessly with the install - good job Crutchfield. We installed the microphone on the bottom edge of the rear view mirror and ran the wire around the edges of the windshield so that you cannot see the wires at all. The microphone works great - others can hear me quite well in noisy conditions. The included adapter trim made the unit fit seamlessly into my Jeep Liberty. My iPhone paired up via Bluetooth very easily and stays connected. Making calls and listening to the iPhone music is now a breeze. I like having the pre-set radio buttons for the few radio stations I do listen to; the buttons also double as pre-set phone numbers for easy dialing. The receiver has lots of capabilites and definitely requires you read the manual to figure them out. While not particularly intuitive, once you check the manual, it is farily easy to remember specific functions.

Pros: Easy bluetooth connectivity. Hard-wired microphone works very well and is easy to install. Excellent support from Crutchfield both in choosing a system and during installation.

    Cons: None so far.

I can also report that this radio sounds vastly better than the OEM Subaru radio that it replaced. I haven't had a chance to set up the bluetooth but I assume that will be good too.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

All good. Love bluetooth. Has front, rear and sub preamp outputs. Nice large volume knob. Front goes off and on easily. The reason I'm writing this is because I couldn't tell from the pictures that the plastic over the display is convex, not flat. In my application, the stereo is overhead and light from the passenger window reflects on the convex plastic and makes it hard to read the display. At night there's no problem. I wish I'd known about the clear plastic cover being this way, in my application it is a disadvantage.

Pros: Everything works as advertised. Oh, and I like how it has three bands of FM and two of AM to store your stations.

Cons: Just the clear plastic over the display. That's the reason for one star off. My previous stereo was flat over the display and didn't have this problem.

I replaced the stock Bose unit in my car with this one. The sound was definitely better due to the additional adjsutments that could be made over tha basic "bass/treble" adjsutments. The bluetooth works great with my iPhone when making calls. No more untangling my headset wires to plug in to my phone to make a call. The USB/aux input are a great addition.

Pros: Great sound. Bluetooth works flawlessly.

Cons: The display doesnt get bright enough - hard to see during the day when its bright inside the car. The stock clock and a/c indicators remain very visible in the car during the day, but the illumination on the stereo are hard to see.

I paired this head unit with 4 Polk Audio db 651s in my 2005 Chevy Trailblazer EXT . WOW WOW WOW is all I can say. The sound is amazing at low, med & hi levels. Love the USB port. Havent even begun to play with everything but based on sound alone I'm glad I bought this. BTW Thumbs up to crutchfield on directions, wiring harness etc. Way easy install.

Pros: Sound, install was easy, Price, I could have bought this cheaper elsewhere but the wiring harness, install kit & directions more then makes up for a measly 20 bucks.

I wish I hadn't waited so long to upgrade the HU in my 96 explorer. I had no idea i could get so many features so cheaply. I think my friends who have been patching together mini-upgrades - like an Aux jack, or a seperate BT device - will be yanking their stock units for a new in dash solution. The free add-ons like the trim kit and wiring harnesses made this easy as pie. One call to CF tech support got me through a wiring question. Don't buy a new car to get the smartphone connections you're looking for - just upgrade the deck. Added bonus is that it can do a full charge on my ipad through the USB jack - something that doesn't work through the cigar lighter jack.

Pros: Functionality, features, easy install, ease of use

Cons: Tiny buttons can be tough for my sausage-like fingers. Sony still needs to take a design lesson from apple and simplify their interface. iPod does almost everything that this does with 2 buttons and a volume rocker.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had the Sony MEX-BT5000 prior to this, and sold it with my Tahoe when I got rid of it. With my new vechicle I thought - hey - that thing was good - I'll get something like it in that same product line. That was my first mistake. My second mistake was not doing my homework because it seems as if I didn't spend enough money, or my expectations were too high. It is astonishing to me how low tech this thing feels, compared to a product 5 years older than itself. The display is the kind that you might find on an old crappy printer. There is just no reason why the display couldn't be improved. I wanted to have a nice clean wiring job done with this project. But this thing has no rear aux input, so now I have a spaghetti array of garbage coming out of the front of my car. The worst part about a project like this is it is so much work to disassemble the dashboard innards of your car. Once the head unit is in, and you hate it, it is too late. I bough this thing, and I hate it. The USB port is almost useless because it doesn't charge. Pandora integration is weak. In fact I can't fathom why anyone would buy a head unit with supposed Pandora integration. I don't use Pandora, so I have to scroll past that stupid thing twice (Pandora BT and Pandora USB) every time I change inputs. Also, Pandora USB just simply does not work on my modern, updated phone (Motorola Droid X2 on Verizon). Constantly knocking the faceplate off because it is on a feather trigger and is next to the volume knob.

Pros: Aux input in front works. Bluetooth integration (Android phone) is working. Subwoofer out works. Sound is good.

Cons: Almost everything but the sound quality is a con. Who cares if it sounds good if it is a royal nightmare to use? The display is terrible at least 10 years behind its time (but I can change the color? who cares!?). The user interface is terrible - hard to understand and navigate with the huge, touchy volume knob Wiring diagram from Sony was not accurate. Unit disconnects from Bluetooth source occasionally and I have to shut the car off to get it to re-mount Shotty, plastic feel, breakable

    Really nice, great value.

Overall this deck is a very good value and has a LOT of flexibility and function. I love the look and color options. The sound is really good with all stock speakers (2003 VW Jetta). The unit was fairly easy to install and presentd no real issues. There was a plastic bracket behind the original deck that needed to be cut out. It took a while since the plastic was very strong and there's not much room in there but I was prepared by support sinc they told me it was there. I was able to connect (bluetooth) my droid initially wih no issues at all. Subsequent bluetooth connections were hit or miss with no rhyme or reason. My wife's iPhone worked better with Bluetooth than the droid on reconnects. A few times the iPhone was connected via Bluetooth for phone functions but not for audio. The only fix seems to be to disable / re-enable BT and also shutting off / removing & reattaching the face. Not a big deal but a pain and rough if you're driving at the same time. Overall I really like this deck and would buy it again. It has lots of connection options (aux, BT and front USB). It sounds great and was easy to install. The only issues are the BT connection issues mentioned above which could be the device or the deck so who knows...

    Pros: See above.

This unit has been in my vehicle for about a week and gives what is advertised and much more! All the EQ options are great. This unit makes my factory speakers sound like different speakers. The sound is unreal, they just can't handle the low frequencies the HU puts out! The rear bass enhancer feature definitely makes a difference in the sound. The average individual if they have decent speakers in the rear may get all the lows they want in their sound! Again, with the 7 band EQ you get some punchy bass. The unit gives good clarity to the acoustical mixes and good definition to the kick drum and bass in any style of music! I listen to all types of music from contemporary Christian, jazz, southern rock/rock, blues/r&b and country. It all sounds great! You will not be dissatisfied if you purchase this unit. Also, I need to mention that I have an Android phone and it works seamlessly with all the Bluetooth functions this HU offers! Phone calls, BT audio and Pandora. Friends tell me that they can not tell that I am talking hands free! And by the way the colors are cool and you can set them to one color, random or just white! Ease of use is in the eyes of the beholder, with all these features you must expect traversing the menu is going to take just a little more effort! The only thing that is going to make me happier with this unit is when my Polk Audio DXi5250's and DXi525's, Alpine 10" sub and Sound Ordance amps get installed in my 2001 Ford Ranger XLT SuperCab pickup!

The unit looks and sounds great. The buttons are set up better than the previous unit I had. This system is mounted on a motorcycle so ease of button access and size of buttons is important. The screen is difficult to read and could be bigger. This makes it difficult to scan through the various "sources". If I could change anything on the unit it would be the size of the overall display and the ease of jumping through the "source" options. Maybe an individual button for each (tuner, satellite, USB, BT, etc...). As it exists, there is one button that requires you to continuously hit until you get to the desired Source. To much time with my eye on the unit instead of the road. Not goo especially on a Harley. Other than that unit sounds and looks great.

Pros: Very nice stereo , with lots of options , and you will be hard pressed to beat this for the $$$ .

Cons: The only con i can think of at all .... would be to maybe have an additiional USB on the back of the unit , and include the USB relocation adaptor so you have the option to mount that in the glovebox , or under dash . But with these newer micro-sized USBs (32gb) , it will not stick out the front of the unit far enough to worry about ever hitting it . So that one is a wash :)

Great Unit, althougth I didn't recieve the free Flash drive. I returned by Clarion CZ302 because of Bluetooth issues and got this one instead. Install was easy and the build quality looks good. I haven't had any major issues with it so far and everything is working great. The setup options are pretty extensive and some of the title wordings are hard to figure out so you definitely need to use the manual to figure out what is what, but once you get used to it, it's fine. Removing the front display deck requires a good pull and makes me worry about doing some damage to it, but it has been fine so far. Overall a very good unit and a great price, much better than the Clarion CZ302. I have also been told the microphone level, despite being on Hi, is still low when I call people.

Pros: Good price and great features. Easy to use and install. Font Panel USB. Selectable unit lighting.

Cons: Can't figure out how to turn off the warning beeps to detach the face. Detachable face removal is not as smooth as othe units. requires a good pull. Microphone level for outgoing calls is low compared to the Clarion CZ302, despite being on HI.

    1996 Toyota Camry
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I listen to FM quite a bit and this radio has issues with reception. If the signal is not strong it makes noises due to interference or issues with selectivity. With the stock Camry stereo the MEX-BT4000P replaced I could listen to my favorite station from UVA while driving for about an hour north. With this Sony, the reception starts to crackle in 1/3 that distance. I chose the Sony mainly for the bluetooth, which works well. Settings are somewhat buried in the menu hierarchy. Streams from my HP Touchpad. The display is too dim in bright daylight, even on its brightest white setting. It would be nice if the display tilted up. You have to click a button to advance to the next station. One click = one increment, so it takes a long time. The volume dial, doubling as a station scanner, or a separate knob would be much more convenient. I'd prefer tone and fader/balance manual controls in place of those station advance buttons. To set the tone, balance, fader, equalizer requires your eyes off the road while you navigate the display menu. The remote helps with this somewhat. I'd return it, but I don't know if another stereo would have better FM reception and they all seem to have menu display controls these days, which I find quite distracting when I should be driving.

Pros: Relatively cheap. Has preset buttons for radio stations, although they are a little small. Sony tech support told me over the phone that you cannot turn off the 'reminder' beeps for not removing the faceplate when turning off the ignition. Crutchfield tech support told me you have to go into the car alarm menu to turn it off (not mentioned in the manual). Thank you Crutchfield! I was going to be bummed if I had to listen to those beeps every time I turned off the car.

    Cons: Mentioned in the review.

This was an easy installation in my 1992 Honda Accord LX Coupe thanks to the extras that Crutchfield provided, only took a couple hours. It worked perfectly from the get go and was easy to set up all the functions and set the color to match the lighted accesories in the car. The display is easy to see and the knobs and controls are simple to get to while driving. The main reason I bought this stereo was for the iPhone connection and I was not disappointed! It was easy to set up the Bluetooth connection to my iPhone 4 for audio and phone use and I really enjoy the Pandora app. It is really nice to have the iTunes music on my phone readily available instead of having to sort through CDs. The USB port also works to control the iPhone, but I find the Bluetooth is easier since it's one less wire to deal with. The sound quality is definitely better than the factory stereo and I found the audio settings helpful in getting the base, etc just perfect. I bought a Sony car stereo for my first car and have Sony xplod speakers in this car - it's a brand that I have always trusted and this latest purchase continues my faith in the Sony brand!

Good unit with lots of features that overwhelm me, but in a good way. To start off the reason I took of a star is because of UPS. How horribly they handled my package is outrageous. I personally waited for 3 hours out side my door step to receive the package, only to find out that there was a huge puncture from the shipping box all the way to head unit it self. Luckily the unit was not damage, but for this reason I had to take off a star. For the unit it self, it is amazing, picked it up for a great price (5-26-12). Love the Bluetooth set up as a friend and I test out the quality, we were both amazed. I thought that i had to also had to replace the stock speakers on my 2002 Toyota 4Runner SR5 with the factory amp installed. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was indifferent to the brand as I was shopping for a head-unit for my 1997 Nissan Maxima SE. The Crutchfield rep helped me narrow down some choices based on my requirements and price I was willing to pay. My expectations were that the Sony head-unit I chose would have some generic iPod features plus Bluetooth for Bluetooth equipped phones. The unit exceeded my expectations when I discovered it streams audio via Bluetooth (I suppose I could have read up on the features but really wasn't all that concerned). Even though I bought the unit with iPod features in mind, I've only used the iPod once. The majority of the time, I'm either streaming Pandora or my music library collection on my HTC EVO 3D phone. I didn't think I would but I actually like how the display colors fade and alternate colors. Overall, I'm very pleased with the the quality and features of the Sony MEX BT4000P.

Pros: Easy to install. Feature rich. Works nicely with Bose speaker system. The coolest feature is when you have your Bluetooth enabled phone paired with the head-unit, the music cuts out when you get a call. This is huge because I've missed calls when I've had the volume up really loud. I thought the mic would be a pain to run but it's pretty easy to mount near the visor. Just use a flathead screwdriver & some cable straps, you can push the cable down the weather stripping along the windshield panel.

Cons: Not intuitive but I have the manual so I can always reference features that way. I prefer not to have to read the manual but can't have everything :)

I can also play pandora from my Droidx2 through this head unit which is pretty cool. The only thing I dont like about this one compared to my old head unit is the display screen isnt as wide which makes navigating and setting up things like the equalizer a little harder. Other than that though this is an awesome product.

Straight out of the box the task seems formidable. So many wires and the OEM connectors with the new connectors...YIKES! But fear not. Crutchfield has given you the key to success with their installation instructions and the forethought to have me purchase the correct required adapter for my 98 Corvette. Removal and installation took about two hours. The hardest part was actually removing the center console and old radio. Initially I had an issue with the Vette not starting and had a whole bunch of codes on my DIC. But I disconnected the new radio at the harness connectors, started the car (which started normally) and then hooked up the new radio with the car running. Shazzam! It worked. I shut off the car and then restarted issues. Guess the car's systems just had to learn to accept the new radio. It works great and someday I will sit down and learn how to program all the features. But for now I have quality music (again) in my Corvette. NICE!

Cons: Compatibility issues with my SanDisk MP3 player. Connector for receiver wire harness very bulky, creating problems getting head unit to fit.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If possible, I'd give this radio 4.5 stars. Overall, I like the radio. I like it well enough I may put another in our '90 VW Vanagon Westphalia. In terms of value for money, I think I got my nickle's worth in terms of features and sound quality. One of the tipping points on picking the radio was the 7 band EQ - something the competition simply didn't offer. I'm still learning how to set up the sound field correctly, but, just out of the box, the sound is all I hoped for and more. Where the radio loses points is the ease of use. The "volume knob" performs many functions, depending on which mode the unit is in (CD, tuner, Bluetooth, etc.). The same is true for other buttons. In fact, I still have the manual in the vehicle to sort out questions. The problem isn't too many options, it's a less than stellar user interface. Fortunately, much of the time, once the radio is doing its task, all is as it should be. "Coolness factor"... sigh... the rainbow mode lighting, etc. is... meh. Why is it there? I do appreciate choosing panel colors for day and night, although the day mode washes out in bright sunlight. Build quality is up to Sony's excellent standards - no gripes there. I really wish Sony had used a detailed multi-line display. The present display is not bright enough in direct sunlight and sooooo dated. Bottom line: even with the stated problems, I'd buy it again. And might just for another vehicle.

Pros: Good sound, flexibility, ease of installation.

Cons: Controls are confusing, adding an external mic for the BT phone function is so... lame? so much a hack? The one line data display was almost a deal breaker - one-line segmented character displays are so 8-track.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was a little scared to buy a Sony deck vs. say Pioneer etc. I have always purchased by name recognition. This time I did my research. The reviews on this unit were good, so I ordered one. Install went well. I found the deck to have awesome sound. All I did was turn on the Loudness feature, and set my bass. The factory speakers never sounded so good. Pandora is pure gold to have in your vehicle. I have an iPhone 4 and it works perfectly with this deck. I had ordered a pair of Rockford Fosgate R1682 Prime speakers for my truck thinking I needed them before I ever received the Sony deck. After hearing the sound I felt I did not need them, but once they came I installed them anyway. OMG! Amazing sound!!! You would swear I had a subwoofer somewhere. What a combination. I could not be happier. :-) I purchased the Sony deck from Crutchfield and the speaker someplace else. I wish I had purchased them all at Crutchfield as they would have supplied the adapter from the truck speaker harness to the new speakers. After buying that I did not save anything. Lesson learned.

Pros: Sound is Awesome, menus are easy to navigate, Pandora and speaker phone.

Cons: If I have to pick something apart, well I can't think of anything.

Excellent replacement and update for factory cassette stereo head unit in 1994 BMW. Pros: 1. Bluetooth works great with smart phone. 2. Sony finally figured out how to play mp3 files burned onto a I don't have to worry about disconnecting and hiding my iPOD every time I stop and get out of the car. I leave it at home. I just burn several playlists onto CDs (I have 95 songs burned on one CD and it's just over half full). 3. Sound quality is excellent even though my speakers are 17 year old factory speakers. I'm enjoying music in this car again! Cons: 1. Display is NOT VISIBLE in daylight! Display is too dim, even if I change it to White! I don't have this problem with any other car's stereos so I didn't expect to have this problem with this new one! 2. Shiny plastic control panel looks great but should be matte finish to kill daytime reflections off of clothes and upholstry. This just aggravates the display problem above. 3. Too difficult to change tone controls (EQ7 settings) while driving. First, if you can't see the display... Second, the settings are buried 2-3 levels deep so how are we supposed to keep our eyes on the road and hands on the wheel?

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First, Crutchfield gave me everything I needed to install this in my 2009 Toyota Tacoma. I am NOT mechanically inclined and my wife and I installed this, along with the XM receiver/antenna, and the bluetooth microphone in an afternoon. Second, it sounds FANTASTIC!!! It does everything I need and want plus some things I might never use. The blue tooth hands-free is a must have and people tell me it sounds fine on the other end. The XM/Sirius (which I should review for that product) seems to get a signal better than the stock radio in my Infiniti G37 did. The USB port for my iTouch now sounds SO MUCH BETTER than when I was plugging my iTouch into an AUX jack. The ipod controls are a little dicey, but there is supposed to be an app to allow working the iTouch directly even when it is plugged into the radio. All in all, it has been a 100% positive experience. Crutchfield rocks and their installation instructions and provided Toyota Tacoma - specific parts worked perfectly. When I first got my truck I felt like I was going backwards (no XM, no blue tooth, and no ipod connection) but now with my new radio I feel like I am once again in the 21st Century.

Pros: Ease of Installation. SOUND QUALITY

Easy to install with proper dash kit from thank you guys

    Pros: Everything

The interface on the radio is a little confusing to use with making selections and changing the settings, but it is really easy to select an input and there are plenty of choices on this radio. The lights on the display are really fun to watch, but not to the point where they are distracting while driving. I haven't had a chance to test all the features yet, but so far very satisfied with my purchase.

This was my first purchase form Crutchfield, and let me first just say holy crap, I love this site. I've never installed a stereo before and was a little intimidated, but this could not have been easier. The kit and guide is dummy proof, and the helpline is no joke. I wanted to be 100% sure of two little questions at points of the install, and it took literally seconds to get through and get answered. Anyway, on to the radio. It's a really solid piece, and very attractive. The buttons for presets on the bottom are maybe my least favorite part, but other than that I get a lot of compliments on the look. The volume dial is smooth and the design is easy to use while driving. The functionality was what I bought this for, and I wasn't disappointed. My phone connects in seconds, and everything sounds way better than my factory stereo. I stream from my home network to my phone, and bluetooth phone to the stereo and it sounds perfect.

Pros: The functionality, look, and customization.

Cons: A little hard to learn how to do everything. I had to actually look at the manual to set the clock hahaha.

I bought this Sony head unit along with the MTX Thunderform sub for my 2001 Ranger. I've been wanting it for a while. I'm sure glad I decided to purchase these components! The deck is amazing to say the least! It will play anything you can find! I especially like the Pandora bluetooth feature used in conjunction with my phone. Plays seamlessly! The only gripe I can find for the head unit is you really need to position the microphone for talking on your phone pretty close to your head. Otherwise it just isn't sensitive enough to pick up your voice and it's very hard to hear on the othe end. Other than complaints!!!

    Pros: Too many to list!

I keep the manual handy in the car, so many features! I needed something that could let me listen to Pandora on my cell phone, Google navigation, etc but play it through the car stereo. I also wanted a front usb jack for a usb key and ipod.

Pros: Lots of features, flexible input options. I would definitely recommend this.

Cons: It doesn't remember the shuffle setting when using the USB key; between shutdowns. I wish there was an option or some way to put a file on the USB key to tell it to shuffle device by default. As a previous reviewer said it would nice to have a setting for continuous/interval type scroll for the song/artist title. This comment is minor compared to all the good features this has.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have only had this a week. Overall seems like solid radio. The bluetooth connects to our cell phones easily. Calls seem clear on both ends; this model comes with an external mic which seems to work better than the internal ones (ala the MEXBT3000P). To switch between phones we have to have to disconnect via the phone itself, the previous BT I had allowed switch from the unit itself. The XM seems clear, it gives you 3 sets of 6 presets. The display allows for 1000's of colours, I have mine set to look like Tron. The display does not allow you to see XM artist info and the clock at the same time which seems silly to me as it has a scrolling display. It has Pandora connection, which I don't use. It has USB connection which I need to experiment with. I have stock factory speakers, not sure if this radio makes those sound better than the factory radio did. The controls are responsive. I haven't used the remote yet.

Pros: Lots of colours, big scroll dial, bright display, external mic, remote, USB, bluetooth

Cons: Unit won't allow switching between Bluetooth phones, display won't show clock and artist info at once.

I have it matched up to my new Kicker DS525s in the doors and KS35s in the dash corners of my 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad cab. Reviews of the DS525s reveal a lack of bass with those speakers. Bluetooth Technology: The Sony MEX-BT4000P is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (version 2.1 + EDR), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit.

Bluetooth Profiles: In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP (Hands Free Profile), PBAB (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).

Pairing: Up to 9 phones or audio devices can be registered with the MEX-BT4000P (only one device can be used at a time). The unit can be set to automatically reconnect to the last connected Bluetooth device when the ignition is turned on.

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Sony MEX-BT4000P.  Please visit Sony eSupport for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

External Microphone: The MEX-BT400P includes an external microphone to carry on your side of your phone conversation and voice command dialing. The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the level of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 12' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone comes with a mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.465" (diameter) x 1.425" (depth). There is no integrated front-panel mic.

Hands-Free Communication: The Sony MEX-BT4000P supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled cell-phone. Bluetooth hands-free communication helps to minimize distraction while driving by allowing you to control your mobile phone from the head unit, so you don't have to touch your mobile phone. The controls of the MEX-BT4000P can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also features an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering Calls: Incoming calls can be answered manually or automatically (between 3-10 seconds) through the Sony head unit, while the ring tone is output from your car speakers and the caller's name or phone number is displayed on the head unit's LCD. Incoming calls can also be rejected if desired.
    • Dialing a Number: Using the MEX-BT4000P, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways.
      • Entering Phone #: Allows you to manually dial a phone number using the unit's control dial.
      • Redial: Use to easily redial the last number you called.
      • Preset Dial: You can store up to 6 contacts in the preset dial for quick dialing.
      • Phone Book: You can store up to 1,000 contacts in the unit's phone book. Up to a 40 character name can be input for each contact.
      • Call History: The unit will store the last 20 calls, allowing you to select a previous phone number quickly from the list.
      • Voice Dial: You can make a call using the voice tags stored on your connected cellular phone.

SMS Indicator: The SMS indicator informs you of any incoming or unread SMS messages on your paired Bluetooth-enabled smartphone. You will still need to view the text message from your phone, as well as create and send text messages from your phone.

Wireless Audio Streaming (with Meta Data Display): The Sony MEX-BT4000P also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The MEX-BT4000P will be able to control your stored music's basic playback functions; such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track, Fast-Forward/Reverse, and Shuffle/Repeat. The head unit will also display your stored music's song information; such as Artist name, Song title, and Album label. The MEX-BT4000P also supports audio streaming of music apps (such as iHeartRadio, SiriusXM,, Rhapsody, & Slacker) , but without control or metadata. You will continue to use your Bluetooth enabled smartphone to view and control streaming music apps.

Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Volume Adjustment: You can adjust the volume level of your paired Bluetooth audio device from -8 to +18dB to match volume level output of other sources.

    USB/iPod/Aux Connectivity

USB Port: The receiver's front-panel Type-A USB port can be used for plugging in a (MSC) Mass Storage Class or MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) type USB device. The head unit can play music files stored on the USB device in MP3, WMA, or AAC formats (up to 320 kbps). The head unit can recognize up to 128 folders with 500 tracks each when connected to a USB Mass Storage Device. The MEX-BT4000P offers the following USB search, playback, and display functions.

    • Search Modes:
      • Quick-BrowZer: allows you to search for a track on a connected USB device easily by category (Genre, Artist, Album, or Playlist)
      • Jump Mode: gets you closer to the song you want by allowing you to fast forward through a music category in 10% increments
      • Zappin: play music (files or folders) in 6, 15, or 30-second clips until you find the song you are looking for on your connected USB device

      • Repeat: repeat a single track or repeat an entire album
      • Random: shuffle all tracks or a specific album
    • Display Information:

Note: This unit cannot recognize USB devices via a USB hub. Not all MP3, WMA, AAC files may playback due to file variations. Copyright protected ACC-LC files cannot be played back.

USB 1-Wire iPod/iPhone Control:  The MEX-BT4000P's front-panel USB port allows you to connect your iPod/iPhone via a single cable (iPod dock connector-to-USB cable; not included with the head unit). This USB 1-Wire for iPod/iPhone connection lets you directly connect, charge, & control select iPod/iPhones via the USB jack on the front of the unit, as well as view metadata like song title & artist name on the front display.
