Sony's DAV-X1 delivers near-high-definition DVD playback and theater-like sound in one simple, convenient package. Special sound processing technology creates an enveloping soundstage from just two compact speakers and a subwoofer. You also get a streamlined, easy-to-use control center with a built-in DVD player that can make the most of all your favorite films.

The DAV-X1 uses advanced internal video processing to "upconvert" or transform standard DVD signals to near-HD quality. It sends these upgraded signals to any HD-compatible TV with a digital video input. The signal stays digital right up until it hits your TV screen, resulting in a better-looking picture.

You can also listen to high-resolution music from Super Audio CDs (SACD). These discs provide greater sonic detail than regular CDs, producing music with more warmth and depth.

Setting up this system is a snap. All you have to do is connect the control center to the subwoofer and both speakers, run a single digital video cable to your TV, then plug in the power cable. No wires to run to the back of the room, no complicated connections. Within just a few minutes, you can start enjoying exciting, engaging movies and music.

Dynamite system for the bedroom or den

Bill from Abingdon, VA on 5/9/2006

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great little system for anywhere you want a simple, clean and great sounding home theatre experience without all the components and wiring. Sound is exceptional for a system this small. Generous inputs allow plenty of flexibility to use other components. The provision of video inputs allows a simple video connection to the TV for all your components, with great picture quality. Hookup is super quick and simple. I couldn't be more pleased and my wife actually appreciates the elegant appearance!! Crutchfield's great price makes this an excellent value.

    Sony DAV-X1

Aaron from Washington DC on 5/8/2006

Unfortunately I can't recommend this Sony product. 3 speaker (2 satellites & 1 subwoofer) systems are designed to take up less space than the typical 5.1 home theater systems while still delivering a respectable surround sound experience. While the Sony DAV-X1 is compact in size, it does a surprisingly poor surround-sound imitation on all audio sources with the exception of DVD. Audio output from all other sources sounds flat and is sorely missing the rich, full texture that you expect from a quality audio system. Spend a few extra bucks and purchase a Bose 3.2.1 system, the Bose delivers much of the home theater performance of a conventional five-speaker system.

Sony DAV-X1 good for the money

    Agee from Indianapolis on 1/17/2006

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The DAV-X1 system is a good buy for the money. It's hard to find HDMI/DVI for less than $1,000. Picture from the single Progressive DVD player is impressive, and system is easy to set-up and use. There are several "surround set-ups" to choose from, but speaker placement and room design is vital to notice much actual surround. Great system for a room where rear speaker installation is difficult. <BR>As with all less expensive systems, a wider choice of output jacks would help with system design, but there are enough to choose from to make it work well with other components. Overall a great system at a really great price.

    Remote Control
    Inputs and Outputs Notes

System Overview: The Sony DAV-X1 is an integrated system that includes a single-disc DVD/SACD/Video CD/Audio CD player/receiver, two front surround speakers and a passive subwoofer. The supplied remote controls the system, plus multiple brands of televisions and cable boxes.

S-Master Digital Amplifier: This unit is powered by the S-Master Full Digital Amplifier. The amplifier processes audio signals from HDTV broadcasts, DVD, SACD, or other digital sources, and amplifies them entirely in the digital domain. This design is highly efficient, producing minimal heat, while taking up 1/4 of the space of conventional amplifiers. The amplifier has the following power output specifications:

    • System: 20 watts per channel (200Hz - 20,000Hz, 6 ohms, 0.07% THD)

    • Front:

      • Rated: 40 watts per channel (1 kHz, 6 ohms, 1% THD)

      • Continuous RMS: 50 watts per channel (1 kHz, 6 ohms, 10% THD)

    • Front Surround:

      • Rated: 40 watts per channel (1 kHz, 6 ohms, 1% THD)

      • Continuous RMS: 50 watts per channel (1 kHz, 6 ohms, 10% THD)

    • Subwoofer:

      • Rated: 40 watts per channel (100 Hz, 6 ohms, 1% THD)

      • Continuous RMS: 50 watts per channel (100 Hz, 6 ohms, 10% THD)

S-FORCE Pro 2.1 Surround Technology: The DAV-X1 system produces a 3D surround sound field by using advanced signal processing and sound wave phasing. This is accomplished with only two speakers and a passive subwoofer. The system includes a setup disc to play through the speakers to test the surround effect.

Super Audio CD: The DAV-X1 is equipped with a DSD (Direct Stream Digital) decoder to enable SACD playback. DSD encodes music at 2,822,400 samples per second, allowing you to hear sound with incredible detail and clarity. Many Super Audio CDs have multi-channel and 2-channel SACD playback layers as well as a conventional CD playback layer. In the Stop mode, you can select which layer of the disc you wish to play.

HDMI Output: The receiver/amplifier is equipped with an HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) output. You can select from the following HDMI resolutions: Auto (automatically outputs the best resolution acceptable by the TV), 720 x 480i, 720 x 480p, 1280 x 720p, or 1920 x 1080i. With an HDMI/DVI adapter, you can connect this unit to a TV with an HDCP-compatible DVI input. Note: DVI cables do not accept audio signals, and there is no analog audio output on the receiver/amplifier.

Surround Modes: This receiver incorporates the following surround modes to bring you maximum enjoyment from your audio and video software:

    • Dolby Digital
    • Dolby Pro Logic II
    • DTS
      • Focus Surround
      • Wide Surround

2-Channel Stereo: In addition to the surround modes, you can select the 2-Channel Stereo mode. Standard stereo sources completely bypass the sound field processing. Multi-channel surround formats are downmixed to two channels.

MP3 Playback: This unit will play MP3 files recorded onto CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW discs using the ISO 9660 level 1/level 2 and Joliet formats. Each disc can have a maximum of 200 albums and each album can have a maximum of 300 tracks.

JPEG Playback: This unit will play JPEG files recorded onto CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW discs using the ISO 9660 level 1/level 2 and Joliet formats. All JPEG files on a disc can be played back in a slide show with or without audio. Additionally, you can rotate any selected image 90 degrees clockwise or counterclockwise. Each disc can have a maximum of 200 albums and each album can have a maximum of 300 images.

Resume Play: This feature allows you to resume playback of a disc from the point where you last stopped. The stopping point is cleared from memory if you remove the disc, change the play mode, change the setting on the Setup Menu, or press the Stop button a second time.

Multi-Disc Resume Play: For DVD Video and Video CD only, the DAV-X1 system can store the point where you stopped the disc for up to 40 discs, and resume playback the next time you insert the disc. If you store the resume playback point for a 41st disc, the resume point is deleted for the first disc. The Multi-Disc Resume feature can be turned on/off in the menu.

PBC (Playback Control) Playback: PBC playback (Ver.2.0) allows you to play Video CDs and Super Video CDs interactively by following the menu on the TV screen. You cannot use Program Play, Shuffle Play, or Repeat Play with Video CDs and Super VCDs with PBC playback.

Night Mode/Audio DRC: The Night Mode lets you enjoy sound effects or dialogue as you would in a movie theater, even at low volume. Audio DRC (Dynamic Range Compression) feature is useful for watching movies late at night by letting you narrow the dynamic range of the sound track. You can select DRC Standard, DRC Max, or DRC Off. Audio DRC applies only to Dolby Digital-encoded soundtracks.

A/V Sync: When the sound does not match the pictures on the screen, you can adjust the delay between the picture and sound.

Parental Control: This unit allows you to set two kinds of playback restrictions for discs using Parental Control and Custom Parental Control. Parental Control allows you to restrict playback of any disc according to a predetermined level. You can select a parental control rating from 0-8, which is protected by a 4-digit password. Using the same registered password, Custom Parental Control allows you to set playback restrictions for a specific disc. You can set the same Custom Parental Control password for up to 40 discs.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the unit off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be adjusted from 10 to 90 minutes in 10-minute increments.

Display Dimmer: Using the remote control, you can set the display to one of two brightness levels.

Tuner: This system has a PLL quartz-locked digital synthesizer AM/FM Tuner. You can store up to 20 FM and 10 AM station presets so that you always have easy access to your favorite stations without having to tune them in manually each time. You can assign a name of up to 10 characters for each preset. FM tuning is done in 0.1MHz steps and AM tuning is done in 9kHz or 10kHz steps.

Speaker System: The system's speakers are driven by multiple discreet channels to create a surround effect with only 2 speakers and a subwoofer. Each satellite speaker and the subwoofer have unique dual drivers. Driven by the 2.1-channel S-FORCE PRO surround technology, the speaker system reproduces a convincing sense of distance and space, resulting in a true surround experience without the need for rear speakers.

Digital Direct Twin Drive Passive Subwoofer: The video-shielded, passive subwoofer features dual 6" drivers in a bass reflex enclosure. One driver fires toward the front while the other driver fires downward. In the menu, you can independently adjust the level of the subwoofer between -6dB and +6dB in 1dB increments.

Front "Surround" Speakers: The front speakers each feature two 2" full range cone drivers. The drivers are set at different angles to help create the surround effect. The proprietary terminals have 4 conductors, 2 for each driver. The front speakers are video shielded, allowing you to place them close to a TV without creating picture distortion.

    Remote Control

Multibrand Remote: The DAV-X1 comes with a remote (RM-ADP004) that is pre-programmed to operate this system and a number of functions on different brands of TVs and cable boxes. The remote has a slide-down panel that reveals more controls. Dimensions: Length=8.147", Width=2.302", Height=0.679".

    Inputs and Outputs Notes

Speaker Output: The changer/receiver has a single 15-pin female DB-15 speaker output which is designed exclusively for the supplied speaker cable. The cable has a male DB-15 plug on one end and three speaker wires (for each satellite and the subwoofer) with proprietary 4-pin connectors on the other end.

Video Outputs: The video signal from the built-in DVD player is output from the HDMI, composite, S-Video, and component video outputs. The video signal from any component connected to the unit (such as a camcorder, game console, or VCR) is output only from the composite video jack or S-Video jacks. The S-Video signals are on a separate bus from the composite video signals, and are not output through the composite video jacks.

Digital Inputs/Outputs: The DAV-X1 is equipped with three coaxial digital inputs and one optical digital input. When connecting a component to the Video 1/ Sat 1 input, you must select between the optical and coaxial digital inputs by setting the switch to the selected input.
