Our take on the Sony DSX-S210X

On the outside, Sony's DSX-210X looks a lot like your typical in-dash receiver. But it's what's behind the faceplate that counts on this neat design — flip the face forward, and out pops what Sony calls the "Tune Tray," a custom-made pocket for your iPod® or iPhone®. Once connected, your player stays charged and tucks neatly behind the display. You can even use the Tune Tray without an iPod, since it features a standard USB connector.

Breeze through your music library
With your iPod safely stowed, you can access your music library using the stereo's controls. You can fly through your library with Jump Mode, which lets you skip around in 10% increments. An additional USB input on the front panel lets you connect your iPhone® or another USB device. Sony's Quick-BrowZer™ also lets you search by artist, album, genre, song, or playlist.

Control PANDORA® Internet radio
With your iPhone connected, you can use the stereo's controls to dial in your PANDORA® stations, rate songs, and skip tracks just like you do online. One small caveat: you need to connect via the second USB slot located on the front panel. A small price to pay for convenience, eh? You can still plug another player (or even another iPod) into the Tune Tray's USB input.

Bright, 4-line display
Sony's Organic Electro-Luminescent (OEL) display shows you 4 lines of text, so you can stay informed whether you're making a hands-free call, streaming a PANDORA® station, or listening to your iPod. You can also choose between red and blue button illumination.

Fine-tune your sound
Sony's Advanced Sound Engine gives you some cool tools for adjusting the sound in your car. You can set the timing of your speakers for your listening position, so you're always sitting in the sweet spot. Low- and high-pass filters let you block frequencies your speakers and subs can't handle, helping them run more efficiently. Use the Rear Bass Enhancer to dial in more bottom end to fill out your sound, and tweak the overall tone with a robust, 7-band parametric equalizer.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Sony stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Sony, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

This digital media receiver will not play CDs. If you want to play CDs in your vehicle, we offer a wide selection of CD receivers.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information. Check our video for some info on use of the Tune Tray with Lighting connector equipped iPods or iPhones.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Satellite radio broken out of the box. My Sony XT-XM1 sat tuner wasnt recognized. I was replacing my old Sony receiver because the volume quite working. I bought this unit, plugged it in and the receiver didnt recognize the sat tuner, also tried a Sirius tuner and same problem. I liked the ability to have my music collection on a usb stick and this sort of works. Sometimes it forgets where it left off when I turn the car off. When I return it will start playing the first album from the beginning. The rotary knob seems flimsy and isnt the easiest to use when driving. The remote luckily can be used to do most things. Dont try searching your music collection while driving. The sound adjustments are good and it sounds really good as well. ** Sony support isnt the greatest. The person on the other end obviously didnt know anything about car radios and they are having me send this almost new unit back to their repair center at my cost and said it would be 7-10 days before another unit would be sent back out. This is over Crutchfield's 60 day warranty otherwise I would send this back to them. Not very pleased with this situation.

Pros: Good sound Having music collection accessible via USB stick is a great feature. Great Price for the features. Dont have to cart around CD collection in car.

Cons: Satellite radio didnt work out of the box and appears the unit is defective. Receiver sometimes forgets what song its on when you turn your car off and return again. (Using usb stick). Sony Support is mediocre, No advanced exchange for defective unit in warranty. 30 Minutes on the phone for them to finally give me return authorization to repair facility at my cost.

    Great Value

Great, I couldn't be happier with this receiver. Easy to use, easy installation, Very good sound quality.

Pros: Ease of use, I don't have to take my I-pod with every time I get out of the truck because it's out of sight. Sounds great.

Cons: Clock doesn't keep good time, loses more than a minute a day.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the price can't be beat. Seriously why are people still paying for CD players? The drawer inside that holds your phone or iPod/MP3 player is awesome. Flash Drives plug right into the front of the unit easy, with an SD card adapter you can put SD cards in there or inside, great use for old smaller cards. Has a full size USB adapter inside on a small floppy cable and comes with a large iPod adapter. Interfaces is standard crap, way too many useless features and a mediocre interface. You need to push the little joystick adapter straight in a lot and that can be hard while driving sa it likes to twist or move to the side. Also the random and mute options are unintuitive. But really, you'll just install it (easy), plug in your media, and then maybe change tracks and volume. Absolutely great for daily use and as an upgrade to a sad factory stereo. For the cost of a tuner/MP3 interface to work with your crappy underpowered factory stereo you could toss in another $50 and get this. AND if you wanted to add a small amp and/or sub you're all set. This is not a high power head unit. Fine for factory speakers or minor upgrades, really i wouldn't use it for more than running your fronts if you really want to get a substantially better sound. I put it in a pickup with 2 : 6" speakers and it's fine.

    Pros: Value, media flexibilty

Cons: silly interface, over sensitive joystick (multi-function thingie), modest power.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this unit as a birthday present for my fiancee to replace the stock unit in her Tacoma and she absolutely loves it. I have yet to receive a single complaint from her. The controls were easy for her to pick up, the sound quality is great, and it fit perfectly within the stock bezel with the provided pocket. What really put it over the top for her though was the fact that she could get rid of all the wires and adapters she was using for her ipod and have it stored out of the way with the tune tray. And for those of you wondering, a her 120gb ipod classic fit perfectly

Pros: Price, ease of installation, tune tray, sound quality

Cons: Excessive 7 way eq, no front aux port, only two illumination options

This is an excellent unit. The remote works well, which is great because the face controls suck. Looks great in old car. Works great except when it locks up . . . fortunately powering down and back up resets and thaws the unit. Sound quality is really great.

Pros: Excellent sound and remote functionality.

Cons: Face controls are 'right sized' for a two year old with excellent vision.

It's a very good design, easy to install and it included all the necessary accessories to do so. Both the internal and external USB inputs are in a perfect position to be able to connect any source with USB connections.

Pros: The menu is easy to access and includes many options for optimal programmability.

Cons: The faceplate is hard to hook up to the unit. Some menu options are only accessible with the remote. If you lose the remote, you will not be able to program those functions and if you want to change some audio options and you don't have it on hand, you will not be able to do so.

Cons: "joystick" button for all functions is a pain!

Stereo was installed in a vintage Chevy Truck with a 100 wt amp & a 8" 100 wt sub. Very happy with the sound and features of the Sony stereo. Having my iPod in the unit is way cool and navigating thru my music is very easy. Great shutting it off and having it start up where it stopped. Now planning to get another one for a second car

Pros: Concealed IPOD is way too cool, and XM radio compatible is all that I need. Very hard to beat for the price. Will be buying another one!

Cons: Still trying to figure out all the adjustments as the instructions seemed to be focused on experienced installers

I purchased this head unit to replace the factory installed unit. It's like night and day, both in aesthetics and sound. The hidden tune tray is a big plus. I'm still exploring everything this unit can do, but what I've found I like. Great bang for your buck.

Pros: The tune tray, the look and sound, it can control the sub, so no need for a separate remote controller connected to the sub.

Cons: Haven't run across any yet.

    1996 GMC Suburban
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome stereo and definitely gets a lot of praise from my friends when I hide my ipod away behind the faceplate. It was pretty simple to hook in, just required some soldering or butt connecting for the cable adapters but it was definitely worth it. unfortunately I already lost the remote and am not entirely sure where to get a replacement. the other issue that I have been having is during longer rides with my ipod plugged in my ipod overheats because its enclosed behind the faceplate. it may just be from my ipod being older that it heats up a lot when it charges, but when I attach my ipod the generic external usb my ipod gets enough ventilation. I also appreciate that when the ipod is attached externally it doesn't render the ipod useless like some devices. you can more easily select music directly on your device

Pros: ipod tray, design is subtle so it looks decent in a suburban, sounds awesome, all parts included thanks to Crutchfield

Cons: ipod overheats in tray after long rides, selector knob is very difficult to make final selection

    Cons: None so far.

There's so much to love about this, but there are two key negatives: 1. the display is impossible to read during the day. 2. the sound options are overly complex. You are NOT going to adjust your equalizer while driving. If you try, you will die. Otherwise, if you don't mind setting your sound in the driveway and leaving it that way while you go to work, then this is a great value. I love the iPhone/iPod drawer-CDs are so 2000. For the price, it's hard to believe there's a better product out there. I would definitely recommend the product ... just wish it were easier to see and operate.

Pros: Compartment for iPhone, great value

Cons: Unreadable display, complicated sound adjustment

Installed in my daughter's VW bug. Unit came with wire harness, adapter face plate and radio removal tools. I pre-wired the harness and installed the unit. Hardest part was choosing which face plate to use as the kit came with two. It all went together well and had just a little trouble getting it to latch in the DIN enclosure. The sound is great, the IPOD tray is really nice and this is a big step up over the factory monsoon unit.

Pros: Nice look, nice sound, easy wiring, easy install.

Cons: Menu is not intuitive but thats the way they all are these days.

What an amazing head unit! Where do I start?.. Hmm. Well, it's got a 52 watt peak power, which isn't only powerful, but clear and loud. The detachable face plate has a tray for any kind of device. I've got an old iPhone sitting in it which starts and stops the music along with the car, which is great. Just leave and come back from where I left off! It has 6 channels, which is great if you have an aftermarket amp for your speakers. But not only does it sound amazing.. It looks amazing as well. The Sony "OEL" display makes it look so much better than most standard 2 line head units. You can change the color of the buttons between red and blue, which is a really nice feature.

    Pros: Everything.

    Cons: Nothing

It was a hard decision to go with a media only head unit, but now that I've made the switch, all I can say is that it was my best decision ever for car audio. Sony did very well with this product. I'm using a 160gb iPod classic and everyone who hears this unit seems to think I'm playing CD's because the sound quality is so great! Tuner is wonderful also. XM radio adapter coming soon to complete this fine piece of equipment! Good bye CD's!

Pros: looks rich, sounds wonderful, and easy to use.

Cons: Wish the volume would automatically lower after unit is powered down. No biggie though.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I can honestly tell you that this is by far the best radio that I have ever bought. The sound quality is awesome and it was so easy to install. I think that the remote is cool as an added bonus. I read the reviews before I bought the radio and the biggest complaint was with the big knob on the radio. The knob is the perfect size and I find it easy to change songs by pressing the knob to the left or right. I will say that when putting the music device in the tray, be sure to press in put get the tray to come out. You should never have to pull on the tray. I put a usb device in the tray and it works awesome. I prefer to use a usb device rather than my apple ipod for the following reasons. We get cold winters in NH and I have been told that leaving an ipod in the car can damage the battery. Also a usb device is around $10, so if someone were to break into my car I wouldn't be out a huge amount of money to replace the usb.

Pros: Awesome device, easy to use, and install.

Cons: No cons as of today.

For the price i find the stereo to be a great product.

Pros: This is the first stereo i have bought so i dont know if they all come with one, but the sony stereo comes with a small controller which you can use to choose your music and control the stereo settings. Also i find the option that when you have the ipod connected externally to the stereo with your usb cable you can choose to control selecting your music through your ipod very helpful.

Cons: I can think of no cons to speak of, but when trying to control the stereo through the knob on its faceplate it gets a bit tricky as when choosing a song or setting you want to edit you have to press down in the center exactly or it will scroll up or down. However this small inconvenience doent really mateer because yhe stereo come with a small remote controller included.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was only looking for a basic in dash replacement for my 240sx. The sale price caught my eye, and not to mention it's a Sony product. My music library thru an ipod nano pretty much stays put inside most of the time. I also listen to Pandora quite a bit and being able to access it through the head unit is something now that I can't live without. This unit, coupled with my powered subwoofer, makes my 2 hour daily work commute much more liveable. And more importantly, CRUTCHFIELD SERVICE ROCKS!!!

Pros: Tune tray works great with my iPod nano. Sound quality is superb once all the settings have been dialed in. Looks and feels like the head unit is top of the line.

Cons: Menu navigation is a bit tedious, I you prefer designated knobs for basic functions, i. e. bass, treble, fader, balance, etc., then this is not the unit for you. Also it's hard to read with the top down in my 240SX.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Unit works great with iPod stashed inside stereo so it's out of sight. Sound quality is excellent--incredibly superior to using the audio input jack that goes through the headphone port of an iPod. Most of all I want to thank my Crutchfield advisor for guiding me to a stereo built especially for digital music. I spent a little more than I had planned on head unit, 4 speakers, and small subwoofer, but the result is a stereo system which is superior to the very fine stereos in my late model Audi and Infiniti. No one looking at my house would think my old pickup has the best stereo of the vehicles parked there. I can't say enough good things about the knowledge and service that Crutchfield provided.

Pros: iPod interface provides excellent sound quality iPod is stored inside stereo

Cons: Takes a little effort to learn to operate, but the payoff is a great deal of adjustability

After the initial issue of which blue wire was the correct blue wire everything has been great. EQ and other features do require some patience to find and adjust, but once you get it dialed in the sound is awesome. It's super convenient to throw the iPod in, but to scroll through music does require some preplanning as it is a little cumbersome and tricky while driving. Playlists or copilot to the rescue!

Pros: Sounds great, super handy to be able to pop the iPod into the unit. Open box special from the outlet made a good deal even better.

Cons: Some features require an extreme amount of patience to find and adjust. It's a little tricky scrolling though 32 gb of music while driving.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great unit for the price. It is a bit complicated at first to navigate, but like every radio, you'll get used to it. The sound quality is fantastic and the EQ presets are great. The iPod Tray is pretty cool but can be a bit of a pain to keep popping in and out every time you get in and out of the car. The remote is also very good and navigates the iPod control quite nicely. The only MAJOR drawback is the big main menu control knob. When you navigate the controls with it and try to make a selection, you must make sure you press it dead center. It's way too sensitive moving left or right and when you try to make a selection, it tends to move in either direction, and puts you back on the menu, you were just navigating through, which makes it a bit unsafe while driving. I recommend using the remote to navigate the controls if your on the highway. Other than that, you can't beat it for the price.

Pros: Nice display, iPod tray and extra USB input, great sound, price, full function remote

Cons: Main menu knob poorly designed. Unsafe

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this unit to replace the stock cassette deck in a 1999 Ford Contour. Using Crutchfield's instructions the installation was relatively easy (after clearing up a minor issue with the wiring harness). Immediately decided to upgrade the factory speakers with 2 pair of Polk Audio DXi570 5"x7" Coaxial Speakers. I primarily use the unit to play a 64 gig thumb drive loaded with close to four thousand, 320 bit rate MP3's. Even though there is no ability to play lossless media, the sound is fantastic after some experimentation and research into the various Advanced Sound Settings (specifically taking advantage of the Listening position, EQ 7 Presets and DM+ Advanced). I am not a big fan of the primary control design (the "multi way encoder") but the provided remote makes the unit much easier to use. All in all I am very satisfied.

    Pros: Excellent sound, reasonable cost

Cons: Does not playback lossless media (flac, etc.) Quirky primary controls (but the provided remote solves that problem).

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit to replace another Sony head unit. I no longer needed CD playing capability, so this was perfect for me. I have had the unit installed for a few days now and it sounds great. It has plenty of outputs to control my subwoofer and other amplifier(s). The sound clarity is great. My only complaint is that it takes a while to get used to the controls and navigating through the menus. I would definitely recommend this if you don't require a CD player. However, It is definitely geared more towards the Iphone and Ipod products, so if you have an Android phone or other MP3 player, you won't enjoy some of the features. For example, you can only access the Pandora feature if you use an Iphone, it will not recognize an Android phone through the USB port (though you can use the USB port to charge the phone).

Pros: Great build and sound quality. Cool Ipod dock.

Cons: Controls take a little getting used to. Navigating the menus can be tricky - especially the sound (Equalizer, subwoofer, etc) menus. Not particularly friendly to "other" music players or phones.

Sounds great, hidden tray great but to quote another reviewer "The bad: -The combination joystick/push button/rotary is just poor design, and not very safe while driving. It is far too easy to hit left or right when attempting to push the knob in to make a selection. Amen to that. Also the blue or red (no green on this one which is what I prefer) led illumination around the controls is WAY WAY WAY too bright with no way to dim them. I'll get some black fingernail polish and cover most of them up. Other than those two things I like it a lot but those two things I dislike very much.

Pros: Sounds Very Good, Can shape sound to your liking, Hidden tray very nice.

Cons: Wiggly, poorly implemented, unsafe while driving joy stick and the, way way way too bright illumination lights. Also don't like the lack of green illumination option.

Great Sound but not the best UI

andykrow from Fort Collins, CO on 3/18/2013

I had high hopes for this but it really suffers from some basic useability issues and perhaps computer problems as well. The bad: -The combination joystick/push button/rotary is just poor design, and not very safe while driving. It is far too easy to hit left or right when attempting to push the knob in to make a selection. -The machine seems to be way too slow at reading the internal usb and navigating within it. The machine is often slow to react to a push from the rotary button, and often simply doesn't react. I find myself pushing it several times which will then often result in accidentally hitting left or right. -The internal USB behaves strangely. I have my tracks organized into artist then album folders but often the receiver lists everything from an artist instead of using album folders at all. After a about a month of using the internal USB it seems to be reading all my tracks alphabetically instead of in album order like it was doing at first. Very weird. I will probably clear the USB drive and reload it soon. The manual says to unplug the USB before you power down the receiver EVERY TIME or risk data corruption. I suppose that's what's happening here but who on earth would actually do that? Good: (running out of space..): Great sound and simple menu layout. Easy to get to settings. High level preamp outs. Love not having a CD player, who listens to those anymore? Bottom line: Avoid. Spend a little more and avoid these issues.

Pros: Great sound, lots of sound control options, easy menus, no CD player, lots of preamp outs. For the price this receiver beats all others on sound and sound menu options.

Cons: Terrible joystick rotary thing, slow USB reading, possible data corruption, plastic-y build, no dim on button backlights, no separate filters on front and rear preamp outs (that would be hard to get at this price point.)

I can see why people buy the much more expesive touch screen type of reciever. In a few years that is my plan.

Pros: This will play from an ipod or thumb drive. For free, i downloaded the entire audio bible on a thumb drive, it only takes up one gig. I don't miss cd's at all. The device drawer is a great idea.

Cons: This sony and a previous kenwood reciever, both depend on too much control from the volume knob. This makes this knob ultra sensitive when traveling. You can't seem to control from your ipod when plugged into the external usb, even though the instructions say you can.

I replaced my factory sound system with the DSX-S210, an older Alpine amplifier and Pioneer speakers. It was a MAJOR improvement in sound quality. I am very happy overall, although a few things Sony could have done a bit better.

Pros: - Multiline high resolution display that fits an entire song title - Good sound quality - Good DC power filtering (no alternator noise) - 6-channel line output (rear speakers and subwoofer) - Flexible audio processing (equalizer and delay) - Convenient folder navigation - Random play modes that make sense

Cons: - No SD card slot, have to use an external card reader - Display is not readable on sunny days (too dim and lots of glare) - Extremely slow to read a large (500+) list of songs - No support for non-English file names or tags

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installing this unit was a piece of cake on my '99 Mustang GT. It actualy had two more pre-outs than I needed but if I ever want to an another amp I'm set. All the wireing is labeled and color coded to match the Crutchfield supplied wiring harnesses, a baboon could do the install unless he's color blind. It's also the least expensive "quality" head unit with 4 volt pre-outs. Anything else in this price range has 2 or 2,5 volt outputs. If you've ever tweaked a jump drive sticking out of the face plate then get this baby, My 16 Gig jump drive is hidden behind the face plate in the "Tune Tray". My passengers just think It's the radio playing. Yes, a radio station that only plays my favorite music. A note to all you Ford owners, get a voltage regulator that drops the voltage on the "amp turn on" from the units 12 volts to the Ford 5 volt spec. That way you won't get a harmless, but annoying, pop when the unit turns on. (this applies to ALL aftermarket head units, not just this one,)

Pros: Simple Install, Great Sound Quality, Mechless, Digital source hidden behind faceplate. Higher voltage pre-outs are a better match for Ford premium sound systems.

Cons: Slight learning curve to learn functions, adjustments. Cool display steals some of my cars thunder.

Installations was booked up but I Installed it surprisingly hassle free in my Audi A4 in the parking lot in 30 minutes, everything I needed was included in the purchase price. Woke the factory installed Bose System right up. Never have been to impressed with the Bose sound System in my current or the past cars that had it (2012 Maxima, 2008 G37) but this inexpensive deck made my Bose system sound more like what I think Bose intended it to sound like.

Pros: Easy installation, My iPod is controlled by and stores nicely inside the deck and have never needed to remove it, iPhone has separate front plug and play is also controlled by the deck, great sound from a budget priced stereo, has made me realize how great Pandora is. No more CD's or satellite radio for me !!!

Cons: about once every 5 or 6 car startups after the car is started I'll need to unplug my iPhone and replug it back in or the radio doesn't recognize it. no big deal really

When I first installed this stereo i was very impressed! I loved everything about it and the Ipod tray impressed everyone that sat in my car. I have had many compliments on the look of this stereo in my dash. The only downfall was about 3 weeks to a month in having this the speakers started to randomly pop while listening to music on a normal set everyday volume, and i have done everything possible to fix this issue including running the speaker to an aftermarket amplifier. Unfortunately i still got that popping noise even after trying 3 different ipods including a brand new 4S. The Crutchfield Reps. were awesome to say the least! but unfortunately for me obviously the year warranty was through sony and they were HORRIBLE about it and was saying that the problem is on my end! So i decided to just go with a different head unit and stay away from sony. Easily been 5 stars if it wasn't for sony not helping with my problem.

Pros: nice stereo gets alot of compliments and is very cool!

Cons: had an issue with the head unit and sony customer service was no help!

I really haven't found anything not to like about this head unit. installed it the day it came in, haven't had a single problem. All around, a great piece of equipment from a great company.

Pros: - tune tray is a great feature, useful and fun to show off. - Zap button makes it easy to find a good song without taking your attention off the road for long, if at all. - lots of equalizer options allow you to get just the right sound pretty easily.

Cons: - interface may take some getting used to if it's your first Sony deck. - due to the fold-down front panel, might not work with a different trim from the one it comes with. But that's just an aesthetic detail, and it looks good with the stock trim anyways.

Walkmans work better than the Ipod or iPhone as both of the Apple units will shut down from heat on hot days, as it gets very hot inside the dash, the Walkmans do not have a problem with the heat to the same degree and will work under same conditions that will shut down the iPod.

I've been using this head unit for about a month. I bought it because I have an -old- iPod touch 2G that wasn't getting much use 'cause the battery doesn't hold a charge very well. It was installed locally and the installer did a nice job! Features that I really like: - fantastic "Tune Tray" that nicely stores and hides an iPod - all of the sound control options are great - option to use rear speakers as subwoofer - overall, an understandable user interface - external USB port is great for quickly transferring files from computer to flash drive (my daily podcasts) - external USB port also charges my cheap Samsung mobile phone and connects well with iPad - I no longer have to keep an inventory of CDs in my car 'cause this unit doesn't play CDs! My wish list for this product (Mr. Sony, could this be fixed with a firmware update?) - using a microSD card with music stored on the card in my Samsung Intensity 2; this does not work consistently (but might be a phone issue) - an option to shuffle ALL SONGS on iPod - an option to play 'iTunes U' audio files on iPod/iPad (external USB) - options for the 'dimmer' (my car [2011 Jeep Patriot] has no dimmer option for a radio; this unit is TOO BRIGHT at night, and I currently have no options to dim the screen) - options to turn OFF items in the Source list; if this were available, I would use the following Source menu settings: - USB Internal/External = ON - Tuner = ON - Pandora = OFF - SensMe = OFF (worthless for Mac-users)

Pros: because iPod is stored internally in player, it minimizes cable clutter; no more inventory of CDs in the car, yea!

Cons: too bright at night (dimmer doesn't work)

    Buy this one.

installed in 2002 volkswagen gti (337 edition). Word of advice for MK4 people if you have those cup holders that block your stock head unit i suggest putting the unit below the space compartment you receive. Just get it. You won't be disappointed. $100 cheaper than the 310x and the only difference is you can't 'thumbs up' Pandora songs. The audio quality through the Bluetooth (reason i got this) is great. on par with AUX. AND NO CORDS!!! People need to stop giving negative reviews because they received a defective unit. Btw, I listen to loud music. metal, dubstep, and rap (when the beat is quality). I enjoy quality. I hate people that thing FM transmitters sound good.

Pros: Bluetooth. Audio quality is great. Sound. this unit has enough power to allow me to take my time buying a sub and amp. Only powering 2 front speakers atm in my hatchback but it is definitely enough. Looks. makes you're car look a lot better than it did.

Cons: Knob. like others have said the knob is a little crappy and takes some getting used to. Space. This might just be my car but getting the unit in was difficult. Bluetooth mic. I don't use it for calls. It doesn't seem to work that well for me.

I bought this receiver nine months ago for a 2004 Dodge Dakota and I absolutely love it. I'd give I five stars all day long. I have an iPhone 4 and I use it every day (in the tune tray) and I've never lost any music because the my phone restored. That's not the head unit. That is a faulty device and/or operator. Anyways, the ease of use while driving down the road is great - once you get the feel for the included remote, you can select a list of songs from your device without ever touching the head unit and barely ever looking at the screen. Aside from that, the options to adjust the audio coming from your speakers are undeniably phenomenal. If it doesn't sound good, you've made poor adjustments or your speakers need replaced. In another vehicle, I also own the Sony DSX100 and I really loved it too. Once I got this though, that one has become obsolete almost (much like the vehicle that it sits in mainly because of the superior sound in the Dakota). I only ever have trouble seeing the display when I have sunglasses on and it's extremely sunny, but my sunglasses are polarized. All in all, go for this; you won't be disappointed.

Pros: Ease of use. Sound quality. Ability to personalize the sound. Adjustable custom listening position is awesome!

Cons: Using the main control knob to adjust settings. It wiggles in order to 'click' left and right. It's supposed to do that, though I just use the controller when I can.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Like the "Pocket" for hideaway connection of I-Phone / I-Pod... No need for exterior wires AND a place to secure device... The sound of this unit with my system is Crisp & Clear - I have Four 3-Way Speakers in my doors ( '03 Tundra ) and an Alpine KTP-445U Head Unit Power Pack 45W x 4 Car Amp - - REALLY nice Sound :-) Wish the display was color and brighter but overall acceptable... Control "Menu" could be more intuative, but also acceptable as well... Wish the Faceplate would be more "Solid"... Too much "Play" in it when pushing buttons / pulling a wire... Overall think I have made a good choice - Good Quality Sound is what it is all about and I am well Pleased in that area !!!

Pros: Quality Sound Hideaway "Pocket" Interior / Exterior USB connectivity

Cons: Black/White display screen Faceplate does not seem very "Solid" (could be OK)

    Solid Product

A very solid player with intuitive controls and a nice display.

Cons: Because the faceplate is detachable it tends to move around a tiny bit when any buttons are pressed. This is slightly annoying.

Sony's product description is misleading. iPhone4 and ipod 5th gen can't be used in the Tune tray. Both fit but are not compatible. Bought the steroe for a jeep Wrangler so to keep the device from flying around.

    Display Features

Detachable Fold-Down Face: The Sony DSX-S210X digital media receiver features a detachable fold-down face for theft prevention. Two face-fixing screws are supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired. The digital media receiver's face folds-down to access the unit's USB port. The fold-down face requires 1.6875" of space to open. No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.

Caution Alarm: If you turn the ignition switch to the Off position without detaching the front-panel, the caution alarm will sound for a few seconds. The alarm will only sound if the built-in amplifier is used.

OEL Display: The 4-line OEL (organic electroluminescent light) display makes it easy to read station & song information.

Image Display: The Sony DSX-S210X offers various display images to choose from. You can select between Movie, Spectrum Analyzer (1-3), Wall Paper (1-4), All (displays rotation of all images), or Off.

Auto Scroll: This feature allows long displayed items to scroll automatically across the display when the track is changed on a disc.

Dimmer: You can manually dim the display at night, if desired. You can operate the display dimmer automatically, when the vehicle's lights are turned on, or manually. If the dimmer is set to automatic, the orange/white wire in the power harness must be connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit in order to properly work.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Off button for 1 second will turn off audio output, but the clock display and button illumination remain on. This makes the clock display and face/button illumination "Keyed" instead of "Unit On" only. To turn the unit off completely, you must press the Off button for two seconds.

Selectable Button Illumination: The Sony DSX-S210X offers selectable blue or red key illumination to compliment your vehicle's interior lighting.

Auto Off: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you can set the unit to turn off all lighting a set amount of time after you turn the power off. The Auto Off feature can be set to 30 seconds, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or No.

    Audio Section

True Fidelity Sound Construction: The Sony DSX-S210X FM/AM compact disc player features a newly developed sound processor for less distortion, an S-MOSFET IC for smooth signal transmission, and a large-sized capacitor for deep bass sound.

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Sony DSX-S210X utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

CEA2006 Compliant Amplifier: The power specifications for the Sony DSX-S210X are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the DSX-S210X are as follows:

    • Continuous Power Output: 17 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Peak Power Output: 52 watts x 4-channels (208 total watts)

Three 4-Volt Preamp Outputs with Adjustable Crossovers: The Sony DSX-S210X is equipped with 4-volt Front, Rear, and Sub pre-amp outputs with selectable LPF/HPF (Low Pass Filter/High Pass Filter) functionality, giving you the ability to customize the sound output to your external amplifiers.

    • High-Pass Filter: The front and rear speaker outputs offer a selectable high-pass crossover frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off.
    • Low Pass Filter: The subwoofer output is non-fading with a low pass filter with a selectable cut-off frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off. You can also adjust the subwoofer preamp output's Phase (Normal/Reverse).

Sound Balance/Fader: The sound balance between the left and right speakers (Balance) and front and rear speakers (Fader) can be adjusted to your preference. You can also adjust the volume level (+/-10dB) of the subwoofer preamp output.

Advanced Sound Engine: Sony's Advanced Sound Engine creates an ideal in-car sound field with digital signal processing. Advanced Sound Engine contains the following features: EQ7, Listening Position, DM+ Advanced, Rear Bass Enhancer, and Dynamic Loudness.

    • EQ7 (Parametric Tune): You can select an equalizer curve from eight music types - Xplod, Vocal, Edge, Cruise, Space, Gravity, Custom, or Off (Flat). The Custom EQ7 mode allows  you to make  your own equalizer settings. You can adjust the level (+/-6dB) of seven different frequency bands - Band1 (40Hz or 62Hz), Band2 (100Hz or 160Hz), Band3 (250Hz or 400Hz), Band4 (630Hz or 1kHz), Band5 (1.6kHz or 2.5khz), Band6 (4.0kHz or 6.3khz), and Band7 (10.0kHz or 16.0kHz).
    • Listening Position (Time Alignment): This unit can change the localization of sound by delaying the sound output from each speaker to suit your position, and simulate a natural sound field with the feeling of being in the center of it wherever you sit in the car. You can choose from Front Right, Front Left, Front Center, Custom or Off. The Custom Mode lets you precisely calibrate your listening position from each speaker so that the sound delay reach the listener more correctly. The distance is adjustable between 0.99-9.9'. You can also set the subwoofer distance of the subwoofer to Near, Normal, or Far
    • RBE (Rear Bass Enhancer): RBE enhances the bass sound by applying the low-pass filter setting to the rear speakers. This function allows the rear speakers to work as a subwoofer even if there is no subwoofer connected.
    • Dynamic Loudness: Dynamic Loudness refers to compensating for volume level and signal gain.
    • DM+ Advanced: DM+ Advanced improves digitally compressed sound by restoring high frequencies lost in the compression process (works only for USB).

Beep Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.
