Not into CDs? Sony's DSX- M50BT digital media receiver is made for marine use, so you can enjoy the same great music you play at home and in your car while you're out on your boat. Built-in Bluetooth® and a handy front USB input give you plenty of ways to play your tunes, while the specialized circuit board coating, UV-resistant front panel, and anti-glare display give you the peace of mind that comes from owning a receiver that's tough enough for life on the water.
The integrated Bluetooth offers Simple Secure Pairing, so you'll be streaming music and taking calls on the built-in microphone in no time. You can also plug your iPod®, iPhone®, Android™ smartphone, or other compatible device into the front USB port and play your favorite MP3 or WMA files while also charging the device. Sony's Quick-BrowZer® feature lets you find your music by artist, album, genre, song or playlist. The front display shows song title and artist info, then gives you caller ID info when you get a call.
The DSX-M50BT features a built-in Dynamic Reality Amp that's designed to produce plenty of power without noise or distortion. You can also customize the sound to suit your musical tastes using the built-in 3-band equalizer. The front and rear preamp outputs will come in handy when you expand your system in the future.
You'll also enjoy plenty of control options with the DSX-M50BT. The intuitive front panel is easy to learn, but you can use the included wireless remote or a Sony wired remote control when you're away from the receiver. Passenger Control for iPhone® and iPod® devices allows your guests to play DJ while you're at the helm.
Installation note: This marine radio is water-resistant, but we recommend mounting it in a water-resistant enclosure or using a cover for best performance.
iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.
Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.
This marine digital media receiver will not play CDs.

Did exactly what I wanted custom mounted under seat in a classic car. Thanks Crutchfield
I wanted something water-resistant. I asked Crutchfield to prioritize radio presets and minimize the "one dial to do everything" syndrome that my last stereo suffered from. Even the user manual for this stereo couldn't believe there were only 4 preset buttons. So much for that requirement. And water-resistant? Ha. I lost one preset button within a few months (my Jeep top was off most of the summer, even during rain) and a few weeks ago the stereo started randomly power cycling, and I quickly realized that the stereo was somehow killing my battery. I stopped for gas and by the time I filled up I had to jump my battery. Perhaps the last problem was a mistake of mine when installing my wiring. Maybe. But the limited number of presets, and the inability to survive some rain storms, made this effectively a waste of money for me.
Pros: Bluetooth worked well.
Cons: Lasted one season of exposure to rain before killing my electrical system.
Just replaced our 10 year old Kenwood stereo in our Stingray 200LX with this Sony Unit and added new Polk speakers. Amazing sound for a ridiculously low price.
Pros: Easy install, great sound, very clear display even in sunlight, easy connectivity to Bluetooth, and a functional remote. I really thought the remote wound be gimmicky but it is actually quite useful
Cons: None yet but this is a new install.
Very nice upgrade from the original factory head unit. Would like some more manual control over the sound as the system does not much base. The sound even when loud is very, very clear and crisp. Need to add a subwoofer and AMP to get some more base into it.
Pros: Easy to install and even made the original speakers sound many times better then original head unit.
Cons: Needs more control so we can add some more bass.
Good radio with the functions we need. I think I got the last one or display model as it scrolls all of it's features 24/7.
Pros: Bluetooth, remote
Cons: Display model scrolling
Great for a boat; marine rated, small size (short depth), and large sound.
good base radio
Very good head unit.
Pros: Many options to tune in sound.
Very nice stereo, but Sony's attachment methods for detachable faceplates doesn't seem to hold up well to vibration. Second Sony unit I've had on this bike; the first one limped along for three years before expiring. This one doesn't seem like it will make it that far. I've had it a month and it started acting up in the middle of a 2800 mile bike trip. Display either isn't readable or the unit completely cuts out with no warning. It will probably end up going back to Sony in the not-too-distant future.
Sounds much better than stock jeep radio. Pairs with my iPhone though I prefer to use the USB interface since that charges my phone as well. Controls take a bit to get used to and are a bit too small to press accurately when you are bouncing around in a jeep. If the weather ever clears up I will report on my ability to read the display in direct sunlight. As for the ability to dim the display, there is a menu item (which is not terribly convenient to get to) that allows you to set display brightness (actually the backlight) to regular or dimmed. For me the regular display brightness is too distracting at night.
Pros: Sounds great Water resistant (important for my jeep) USB and Bluetooth.
Cons: Display doesn't dim with dash lights
Bought my Sony stereo to replace the stock Harley stereo on my 2008 Street glide. The fine folks at Crutchfield Electronics help me navigate my way to my final choice. There were several reasons for going with this unit. Plenty of power, USB flash drive instead of CD for my mp3's, detachable faceplate, and a bright display which can easily be seen in direct sunlight. It was fairly easy to install with a purchased Scosche plug and play wiring harness that easily fit right to the Harley harness.
Pros: bright display plenty of power priced right
Cons: Lots of features to absorb and takes a little getting used to.
Worked perfect for my boat
This is a really good upgrade for my Harley. The Bluetooth features are great. The screen is visible in sunlight, and the controls are easy to navigate. The front USB allows for my entire music collection to be played easily. Only thing I would like to see is to have the clock visible at all times. You have to choose between the clock display and the music display (station, RDS, etc).
Pros: Front USB, Bluetooth functionality, front screen visible in sunlight
Cons: Clock not visible at all times
I purchased this as a replacement for an existing aftermarket radio in my daughter's wrangler. The previous radio was so complicated that she never fully understood how to use it. This was complicated by the fact that the existing radio was not marine rated and would have issues intermittently. This radio synced up to her iPhone easily and allows her to listen to her play lists as well as make hands free phone calls.
Pros: Marine rated is a huge plus for a convertible. Easily syncs to iPhone.
Cons: Seems a little lacking in low end.
Good stereo. Would be a 5 star if it dimmed and also if Bluetooth was easier to set up. Now that it is set up it connects immediately though. Also I think someone else mentioned it but getting the face plate of is a bit tricky
Pros: Size and weight
Cons: Does not dim and at set up Bluetooth connecting
Great unit. Easy to install. Display is very easy to read in direct sunlight.
Love this new stereo, very easy insulation. Delivery was so quick. Love Crutchfield!
Pros: Delivery, instillation so simple
Killer product!!! Excellent price, VERY fast shipping, and simple install directions. Self-installed in under an hour and I am extremely pleased with the amount of sound this stereo pumps out. Highly recommended.
Pros: Easy install, fast shipping, great product.
My third unit to go near the pool in an enclosure that, though mostly watertight, is very hot inside and humid. The other two Kenwood marine units each lasted 2 to 3 years. The Crutchfield salesman was very helpful and his suggestion was to go with Sony as they were more corrosion resistant than other brands so it was worth a try. So far so good.
Pros: Does most of what we need for music, radio, iphone, pandora fairly effortlessly. Powerful enough for 6 speakers,
Cons: Like most units today, they crowd many functions into a few buttons and it takes a while to figure them out and navigate through the maze, but understandable with the space available, so keep the guide to help when needed.
Works great, I'd give it 5 stars but since I have it mounted below my sight line, I keep hitting extra buttons that change it from Volume setting to balance or fade etc.
Pros: Short and very easy to install.
Cons: Careful when using the dial for volume as it also changes other settings if you push in on it.
I bought this unit to replace a Sony CDX-GT300 car stereo that the previous owner installed in my deck boat. The old radio went out last year and we boated a whole season without a working stereo radio and used a Bluetooth speaker connected to a iPod. I really wanted to replace the radio so I started researching radios. I didn't want to spend a lot on the stereo so I searched for radio's that were less than $150. I narrowed it down between this Sony and a Kenwood unit. I decided that I didn't need a CD player but I did want one with Bluetooth audio. Both the units I was considering, the Sony DSX-M50BT and Kenwood's KMR-D558BT, had this. I decided to go with the Sony because of the reviews about the display visibility in daylight. I installed the radio last weekend. I purchased this product thru Crutchfield for their technical product support. I am glad I did. While I was installing the radio I compared the wiring harness from the old sony car radio to the new M50BT. They had the same style connector and wire colors were the same. I called Crutchfield to verify whether I could use the existing wiring. They compared the two and verified that I could. I know I wouldn't have had that type support with any of the other on line vendors. That saved me a lot of time. Thanks Crutchfield! I don't have a lot of run time on this radio. I installed it last weekend and used it this weekend. There is no problem seeing the display during the daytime. So far so good.
Pros: Used same wiring harness as old Sony car radio, Display easy to see in the daytime, Bluetooth connectivity
Cons: None yet
This replaced a flooded CD/Receiver on my bike. The first thing I noticed was the reduced size and weight of this over the cd unit. This is a plus on a motorcycle because it reduces front end weight. It was easy to install and sounds great. I only have front speakers and my wife could hear it as we rode 70 mph. I only have about 270 miles on it so far and it has worked great. It has been through a Florida downpour.
Pros: Size and weight
Cons: None yet
Good unit for the money.
Pros: Sounds and looks good.
Cons: Can be difficult to navigate. Bumping the volume button while attempting to change the volume will send it into another mode which is difficult to get out of.
Easy to install in our BMW 1600...love the features and sound....very happy with this purchase and with the assistance by the folks at Crutchfield.
Pros: Easy to install and operate + great features.
Cons: None so far
Great radio - put it into my 2010 Street Glide and the Bluetooth works great with my iPhone -
Pros: Looks and sounds great! Bluetooth and USB works great- Bluetooth pairing worked first time no problems- love this radio and the price!
Cons: Do not really have any cons
Just what I needed for my H-D motorcycle.
Pros: Easy installation
Excellent choice for a replacement stereo, this went into an Older GL1200. Previous owner had a low quality stereo and speakers. Matched this with a pair of Kicker 4's and can listen at highway speeds without an issue. Paired it with my headset is even better when helmet is worn :)
Pros: Easy wiring! Easy setup up, built in amp is acceptable for a good set of speakers.
Cons: Not totally water proof, but have a cover to deflect the rain.
I bought the Sony DSX-M50BT for my boat, and have been very happy with it. It's compact and still very functional. The bluetooth feature is great for playing music without having to be tethered to the device, and the sound clarity is perfect. The front of the stereo has a USB port which I regularly use to charge cell phones while out on the Puget Sound.
Pros: USB Charging Bluetooth hands free
Cons: Sound is a bit lacking when you're not using the XPLODE EQ setting.
Very nice and simple Head unit. I Bluetooth all my audio in every vehicle and this one does not disappoint while being used on ski boat. Love the front USB and 3.5 mm inputs for other options of audio
Pros: Display is clear even in sunlight, easy to replace in single DIN slot, no cd slot to worry about water damage
Easy to install. Bluetooth is great.
Picked up this head unit on multiple sales and with a gift card from Crutchfield to go into my Jeep Wrangler. My old stereo had corroded badly from the salt air and was in need of an upgrade. The Bluetooth streaming works flawlessly and has surprisingly good sound quality transmission. The pairing process wasn't as intuitive as it could have been but once it was set up it works well and automatically reconnects whenever I start my Jeep. Wiring was simple as usual with Crutchfield's included instructions and the headunit powers my alpine 4 channel amp perfectly. The speakers sound vastly better than with my old, corroded pioneer unit. It's also nice that the removable face plate is smaller than the width of the entire stereo since I have to lock mine up in the glove box every time i leave the Jeep since it's topless and doorless frequently.
Pros: -Great BT streaming -Smaller faceplate is easy to remove and takes up less space in the storage -Audio control features are adequate for tuning sound compilation -Blue coloring and backlighting aren't overly bright for night time driving
Cons: -Bluetooth set up not extremely intuitive -Faceplate release mechanism could be a little smoother (may break in better down the road)
I purchased this radio as an upgrade to allow ipod interface and remote control. It functions, but the menu selection is not intuitive nor user-friendly. I recommend buying a nicer radio with better menu functionality.
Pros: Sounds good, lightweight and easy to swap for another Sony radio as the wiring is identical-at least it was for me in this application.
Cons: Poor menu functionality and does not directly relate to remote.
What's not to like. Does just what I need in the boat. Streaming pandora
Very sweet product, simple to use in the rock crawler
Pros: ROCK AND ROLL WILL NEVER DIE OR SKIP. Bluetooth baby!
Installed this unit in my pontoon boat. It replaced an old Sony CD receiver. The features are great on this unit especially the Blue Tooth capability. We no longer use Cds so the blue tooth combined with the USB capability was exactly what I was looking for. Only negative is that it does not have a sub-woofer output. Only front and rear pre-amp out. I run three amps so I just ran a y splitter out the rear and adjusted the crossover in the sub amp.
Pros: Compact, great features
Cons: No sub out.
I have not yet been able to test all the features of this stereo, but once I had it installed, it sounded great. I was looking for a marine stereo that had built-in bluetooth and an easy to read display. When we are flying down the lake or coving out, my family likes to play the tunes from their iPhones. We had been using a Bluetooth FM modulator, but that gets in the way on a boat. I also wanted a stereo that would easily install in the same space as my Sony factory unit. This units is half the depth, lighter weight, but the same exact outer dimensions as the one already installed on the boat. I offered simple hookup, just using the exact same connections and harness as the current stereo. The display is bright, and the sound, coupled with my new JL Audio marine speakers, is booming! Can't wait to listen all summer long. Not sure if the transom radio controls will still work, but they should, considering that the hookups were identical to the factory unit.
Pros: Easy to install. Bright and easy to read display. Built-in bluetooth. Powerful output.
Cons: None so far.
Decent looking product. I haven't had a chance to put it into the boat as mother nature wont let go at the moment but seems well built and looks good too. I have always had good luck with Sony. Would give it 5 stars but haven't actually run it yet.
Purchased this unit to replace an old Sony FM/AM/Disc Player (Model CDX-C5005) on my boat. Wanted a unit that would use the existing electrical and speaker connections, and this Sony unit worked. Also wanted a unit that allowed modern connections (e.g., iPod plugin, Bluetooth, USB) and did not need CD capability.
Pros: Replaced older Sony unit and used same electrical and speaker connections. Has iPod plugin, Bluetooth, and USB connections.
I bought this unit to install in my new fairing on my motorcycle. I wanted to go marine for those few times you get stuck out in the rain. Only been able to ride a few times because of winter weather. Unit is working great so far. Controls seem to be easy to use after you have some time to play with it. Sound is good, I have it pushing two infinity 6X9's and it does the job. The front inputs are great for ease of use. Bluetooth works great as well. All in all I'm just as happy with this unit as I would be a $200-$250 one. At $130 I don't think you could do better.
Pros: Bluetooth connectivity, front USB and axiliary inputs, easy to install
Cons: If you press the volume wheel while trying to spin, it goes into a menue. Hard to do while riding but comes with a remote.

Detachable Face w/ Caution Alarm: The Sony DSX-M50BT digital media receiver features a detachable face for theft prevention (no face case included). An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit. If you turn the ignition switch to the Off position without detaching the front-panel, the caution alarm will sound for a few seconds. The alarm will only sound if the built-in amplifier is used. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.
1-Line LCD w/ Dimmer + Auto Scroll: The single-line LCD makes it easy to read station and song information. A dimmer function lets you dim the brightness of the display. You can choose from either DIM-ON or DIM-Off. The Auto Scroll feature allows long displayed items to scroll automatically across the display when the track is changed.
Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Source/Off button once will switch sources. Pressing and holding the Source/Off button for one second will turn off audio output, but the clock display and button illumination remain on. To turn the unit off completely, you must press and hold the Source/Off button for two seconds.
Auto Off: When installing in a boat without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you can set the unit to turn off all lighting a set amount of time after you turn the power off. The Auto Off feature can be set to 30 seconds, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or No.
Bluetooth Technology: The Sony DSX-M50BT is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (version 2.1+EDR), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Sony DSX-M50BT. Please visit Sony eSupport for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

Hands-Free Communication w/ Integrated Mic: The Sony DSX-M50BT supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled cell-phone (such as your iPhone or Android smartphone). Bluetooth hands-free communication helps to minimize distraction while driving by allowing you to control your mobile phone from the head unit, so you don't have to touch your mobile phone. The controls of the DSX-M50BT can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also features a front-panel integrated microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.
Wireless Audio Streaming: The Sony DSX-M50BT also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. You'll be able to stream stored music and music apps from your mobile device to the Sony digital media receiver. The DSX-M50BT will be able to control your music's basic playback functions; such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track, Fast-Forward/Reverse, and Shuffle/Repeat. The marine receiver does not support song/artist information display. You will continue to use your Bluetooth enabled smartphone to view song/artist information and to operate advanced music navigation features.
Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.
Front-Panel USB Port: The marine receiver's front-panel USB (type-A) port can be used for plugging in a Mass Storage Class (MSC) USB device; such as select Android smartphones (Froyo/Gingerbread OS only), portable digital audio players, or USB thumbdrives. The head unit can play MP3/WMA music files (up to 320kbps) stored on compatible USB device. The unit will recognize up to 128 folders and 512 files per folder. The receiver can display the following ID3/WMA-tag information; Track number, Elapsed Playing Time, Song Title, Artist Name, or Album Label. USB portable devices that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the digital media receiver's USB port (max. 1A), and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On. The Sony digital media receiver offers a variety of unique playback & search functions.
iPod/iPhone Audio Playback w/ DAC Bypass: The DSX-M50BT's front-panel USB port allows you to connect your iPod/iPhone via the iPod dock or Lightning connector-to-USB cable that comes with your iPod or iPhone (not included with the head unit). This USB 1-Wire for iPod/iPhone connection lets you directly connect, charge, & control select iPod/iPhones via the USB jack on the front of the unit, as well as view metadata like song title & artist name on the front display. The USB connection bypasses the iPod/iPhone's DAC and uses the head unit's 1-bit DAC to maximize sound quality. |Audio||Video||Head Unit||iPod/App||Artist/Song Text||Track Info||Phone||Audio|
Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.
Front-Panel Auxiliary Input: A front-panel stereo 3.5mm mini-jack is provided to allow the connection of a portable audio source. Just connect your portable digital music player to this unit, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your mobile audio system. The volume level of the auxiliary input is adjustable from -8 to +18 dB to compensate for any difference between the unit and your portable device. The aux input can be deactivated in the menu, so it does not appear as an available source.

Joe, I had a DSX-M50BT in my outdoor bbq island and lost it to an electrical issue (improper protection) during a lightening storm. Yes, they use the same mount/hole dimensions. The M50BT is actually a few inches shallower, so you shouldn't have any issues. use care when removing the sliding bracket, it's a pain in the a** to get it back over the new one if deformed at all.[ MICHAEL Jun 02, 2016 ]
