There's a reason 50mm lenses have sold well for large sensor cameras: this versatile focal length is equally strong for portraits, general photography and videos. When you've got one with an aperture this wide, you increase its utility tenfold. An f/1.8 aperture means fantastic shots in low light, and the "mild telephoto" focal length means portraits that will stand out against a buttery background blur.
Sony's outfitted this lens with smooth-running, near-silent motors: a linear motor controls the focus drive, and a stepping motor is the power behind the responsive aperture-control system. You'll appreciate the quiet operation the first time you use this lens to capture video with sound.
Average Customer Review(s):
When I purchased this lens I was still kinda debating if this lens is really worth it. Because I already have a 30mm f1.4 lens that I really used but when I tried using it, it surpasses my expectations the picture quality is really nice and sharp! I highly recommend this lens especially for portraits or street photography.
Pros: Light weight, captures sharp shots and good picture quality
If your debating between that "other brand" 60mm lens and this one.. get this one. It's seriously such clean and clear optics from edge to edge. The Bokeh is near perfect.
Pros: Clean clear image quality Fast A/F ability Native compatibility
Cons: None so far..
Great lens. Sharp pictures.
If you want to receive that "WOW!" response when showing portrait pictures taken, look no further. The performance of this lense is fantastic.
Pros: Fast, sharp, light...
Simply put, this is a must-have lens for any e-mount camera. When you're ready to get a bit more serious about photography or you just want to get those great portrait shots with the nice blurred background, this is the next lens to add to your collection.
Pros: Bright 1.8 aperture / Sharp pics / Great shallow depth of field / It does what it's designed to do and does it superbly. Buy it.
Cons: No cons as far as I'm concerned.
You can't beat this prime lens - creamy bokeh and sharp subjects, its the all-around can't-miss lens you've been looking for. Lightning quick autofocus, tank-like bulid... this lens absolutely has it all.
Pros: Creamy bokeh, great build, fast focus
Cons: Slightly more expensive than Canon and Nikon's offerings with the same specs...
Optics: The Sony E 50mm F1.8 OSS (SEL50F18) standard prime lens is compatible with the Sony α interchangeable lens cameras with the E-mount. It cannot be used on a camera with the Sony A-mount. The lens has a focal length of 50mm with 35mm full frame cameras like the A7 (ILCE7 and 7R), and 75mm on NEX-series cameras with APS-C-sized image sensors. It comes with the ALC-SH116 lens hood, and front and rear lens caps.
Optical Steady Shot (OSS): The SEL50F18 has built-in Optical Steady Shot (OSS) lens stabilization. When mounted to a compatible camera, Optical Steady Shot can compensate for camera shake to prevent blurred images, especially in low light situations. The shake compensation is equivalent to 4 stops.
Focusing: The lens can be used in the auto-focus, direct manual focus, or manual focus modes. You can switch between focusing modes in the camera menu. In Direct Manual focus, you can fine-tune the focus by turning the focusing ring after initially auto-focusing. Manual focusing is performed with the focusing ring as well.
Lens Hood: The lens comes with the bayonet-type ALC-SH116 lens hood to prevent stray light from entering the lens causing lens flare. When installed, the lens hood adds about 1.7" to the overall length of the lens. When shooting with flash, you should remove the lens hood to prevent shadows at the bottom of the picture.

Can't beat this lense performance for its price. I own its little brother, the 35mm, and love it. I will use this one for medium range sport shots of my kids. [ ANTONIO Apr 12, 2016 ]
