Access apps from your iPhone with this Sony, and use your iPhone as a remote control.

When system building is your goal

The CDX-GS500R offers all the features you need to command a killer car audio system: an impressive array of sound-shaping tools, along with three pairs of 5-volt preamp outputs — perfect for driving your external amps. And this receiver will look awesome in your dash, since you can choose from over 35,000 colors to create the perfect look.

Sound controls that give you an edge

What's the point of installing high-performance car audio gear if your car stereo only has bass and treble controls? This Sony offers the tools you need to get the most out of your gear. First, you can tweak your tone curve with the built-in 7-band EQ, while the high-voltage preamp outputs ensure that you get powerful, clean performance from your amps. The digital time alignment features allows you to time your speakers to create a perfect stereo "sweet spot." The Rear Bass Enhancer eliminates mids and highs from your rear speakers, pulling the soundstage forward and reinforcing your bass. You can use the high- and low-pass filters to tailor the sound output to make the most of your speaker setup.

Ready to play all your media

The CDX-GS500R will handle all your music, whether you're spinning CDs or rocking out to tunes on your mobile device. Once you plug your iPhone®, Android™, or Blackberry™ into the rear USB input, you can enjoy your stored music. Or check out your favorite Pandora® Internet radio stations when your iPhone is plugged in. This receiver works with the compact SiriusXM satellite radio tuner (not included) to give you the best in news, talk, sports, and music. And, of course, you can plug most other sources into the aux input on the front panel. And, best of all, Sony backs this high-performance receiver with a 3-year warranty

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Sony stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the receiver, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: The App Remote feature only launches iPhone apps that have been registered with Sony.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

    Everything I needed!

Stay gold ponyboy from Centerton, ar on 10/21/2014

This unit is awesome! I went all out in this install. Xm radio, brick alpine 4c amp, and 2c 2300watt amp with 2-12s. It feeds both amps well and has all the sound adjustments for the perfectionist. The rear usb and color illumination gives it that custom look. No more iPod cable for all to see. The color illumination is sick! Easy to match with dash lights or you can use colors that change like blues that fade from light to dark or through the full spectrum. But in the end it's all about the sound. Paired with the amps it's incredible!! Very clean highs and lows.

    Pros: Looks greats! sounds better!

Cons: The controls are a bit of a puzzle to figure out but if you spend a little time with it when you install it's not terrible. The aux inputs work but they degrade the sound quality (I think this is pretty universal with aux inputs)

I have a dodge dakota and this sterio was a nice feature to upgrade factory head unit. Very simple to use. Install was a bit misleading had to call and they said it was a typo in the wiring harness directions. Didn't get why they wouldn't fix but oh well. The other thing is that the clock is never displayed and if it is it goes away in a matter of seconds. And you can't change it all in all good unit

    Pros: Build Use

    Cons: Install Clock

I'm a simple man that doesn't need a lot to be happy. This radio was more than I usually go for but it was a good price. It is simple to use and didn't take me long to figure out without directions. If I ever want to add to it I can easily do so. Happy with the purchase and always happy with Crutchfield.

Its a good head unit for the money. I bought this because of the usb access in the back. My last unit had the thumb drive in front and got snapped off by a passenger.

Pros: Usb rear input, sub control, looks nice, and doesn't seem "cheap"

Cons: The only issue I have is when using the thumb drive everytime the car gets turned off the play list starts over when I get back in the car. It could be some setting I havent figured out yet. Im not quite sure.

Bought stereo for the USB that states in supports Android. After installing and hooking up phone it says "not supported". Called Crutchfield and advisor stated that the stereo only supports Gingerbread Androids...Not the new operating systems. This should be stated before purchase. Nice stereo...but this is not good...especially when I drilled a hole in my mounting kit to run the cord thru only to find it doesn't work...

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit is a distraction to navigate while driving, especially the main menu. Too many sound adjustments. The weight of this receiver is too light to be sonically accurate.. I got rid of a Panasonic CQ-C8100U that works fine. This radio I had bluetooth through the aux input before bluetooth was even intergrated into units. this sony makes music on my galaxy s3 sound real bad. Display colors are a plus but sonics terrible

Pros: multi color display, high preamp voltage

Cons: sound quality, ease of use

    Great radio. Great price

    a winner from Sony!

Paul F from southern Ohio on 9/17/2013

Installed without difficulty in a 2001 durango. The sound shaping features really helped match the 2 pairs of Sony speakers in the doors with the 8 inch Bazooka and Dual amplifier.Radio reception is very good and presets are nice to have! The control is not as intuitive as I would like, but I'm learning it quickly. Its far superior to the JVC and Pioneer units I've had in recent years. It has a lot of useful features considering its price point.I HIGHLY recommend it for a factory upgrade to mid-level system

Pros: sound shaping control,5 volt pre outs, good radio reception, overall number of features for the price

Cons: controls could be easier but they are better than most brands I've used

    Very Happy

James from Ft. Worth TX on 9/17/2013

The reason I bought this Sony are the following reasons. It has the rear USB port ( I dislike having cables tethering the front of the radio. Very tacky in my opinion) Love the 5V output. Makes for a very clean sound. Variable display, and a screen you can see . Fairly easy to operate as well.Over all I am please with everything with this unite. Great value.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 20 year old truck that needed something better than the original factory tape deck. This Sony was so much more than a factory replacement! The tuner picks up weaker stations that I never knew existed & it has more input options than I know what to do with or know how to use. If you are looking for a old school, single DIN unit, for the price, this one is hard to beat!

Pros: Price, features, strong FM tuner, attractive display

Cons: Low power, learning curve on settings & features

    Sony produces solid equipment.

    Pros: Sony quality.

Cons: Tone control, all music is not equal when it comes to tone. This unit lacks the ability to adjust while driving safely. CD's aren't equal, neither is the music on my ipod, which comes from various sources.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed this head unit replacing Sony CDX-GT620IP that was in my truck when I bought it. It did have a different power/speaker connector than its older predecessor but went in very easy. My first thoughts were that I was really liking the different colors available. The plethora of colors would make me think it could match any factory instrument coloring out there. The main reason I wanted to ditch the GT620 was the blinding blue LED ring at night time and the lack of customization. The sound from the GS500R is a bit better than the GT620 as well, not only in loudness but quality as well. It's everything I would want from a head unit at this point just powering some regular old 6x8 coaxials. I'm thinking the 7 band EQ is a real benefit here. Radio reception, CD player and MP3 playback via my player were all excellent. The menu's take some getting used to and at some times are irritating in their navigation. My prior GT620 had very few menu options so it was easy to navigate, as were prior head units from Pioneer and Alpine. I would think a little sleekness added to the options and menus would go a long way in terms of improving the unit. I got this unit on sale and would recommend it to anyone.

Pros: Great sound, 7 band EQ, remote, high level of color/sound customization.

Cons: Menus are a little counter-intuitive and do require reading the manual to take full advantage of all the options/customization.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the worst stereo I have ever owned and I cannot wait to return it. The pandora "app mode" doesn't let you change stations unless you shuffle. The sub pre-amps are set up for mono powered and sounds terrible. This actually made my car sound WORSE than it did before. My 10 year old stock stereo sounds 10x better. The 7 EQ setting is a pain in the ass to get anything to sound right and the presets are awful.

CEA2006 Compliant Amplifier: The power specifications for the Sony CDX-GS500R are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the CDX-GS500R are as follows:

    • Continuous Power Output: 17 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Peak Power Output: 52 watts x 4-channels (208 total watts)

Three 5-Volt Preamp Outputs: The Sony CDX-GS500R is equipped with 5-volt Front, Rear, & Sub pre-amp outputs giving you the ability to connect external amplifiers to your car stereo system.

Subwoofer Controls: The unit's subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The subwoofer preamp output features a low pass filter with a selectable cut-off frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off. You can also adjust the slope (1/2/3) of the low-pass crossover. You can even adjust the subwoofer preamp output's volume level independently from the head unit's volume control from -10 to +10 in 1dB increments. In addition, you can select the phase of the subwoofer output from Normal or Reverse.

Subwoofer Direct Connection: You can connect a subwoofer to this head unit without the need of a separate power amplifier. Simply connect a single subwoofer (4-8 ohm) directly to head unit's left or right rear speaker leads (but not both). Same subwoofer controls apply.
