Sony's Dynamic Soundstage Organizer raises up the music to improve the soundstage in any car.

Burn your favorite MP3 or WMA tunes to a CD-R or CD-RW disc and pop it in the CDX-GT500 — onboard BBE MP processing will make sure it sounds great. The player can even handle the ATRAC3plus music files that you buy at Sony's online music store.

Want to expand your system? Go for the optional XM or SIRIUS tuner to add satellite radio to your entertainment options. Sony CDX-GT500

deezy from Waco, TX on 6/16/2008

I bought this product to upgrade from an older Pioneer which skipped alot and i fell in love. It matched my s-10 console perfectly. Then i moved it into my 97 Jetta where i hit a 143db in competition. After that it found its home in my newer 2000 Jetta where the blue colors on the unit almost exactly matched the colors in my dash and a/c controls. I kind of wished it had a motorized flip down but that might end up failing one day. Everything is easy to configure and has very moderate changes in the sound. 3 pre amps are nice, although i never could get the mp3 port on the back to work it has rca inputs on the back also which i used for a dvd player. The head unit served its time and never skipped a beat even in 103 degrees with no a/c in my truck or at 143 db. Unit was finnaly stolen and im looking for a new one and thought i would put my 2 cents in.

Good for the price

Mariachi153 from Pittsburgh, PA on 11/25/2006

Summary: Nice head unit altogether.<BR><BR>Pros:<BR>1. Looks great inside your car, the LED screen is very bright so it is easy to see during the daytime. One of the best animated displays that i've seen so far. <BR>2. Can go to very loud volumes without too much distortion. <BR>3. The DSO is really good for bringing out the cymbals, voices, and the snare drums. I usually have my DSO setting around 1 or 2. I sometimes put it on 3 for certain music (like classical). The DSO also helps with bringing the sound more level to your ears (my front speakers are near my feet).<BR>4. The 24-bit DAC, the BBMP, and the DSO are very good for creating a clear/crisp sound so your mp3's sound better than CD's.<BR>5. The head unit has a very good customizable equalizer. The Xplod setting brings out the BASS but doesn't increase as much BASS as a normal 'loud' setting (which i like), but you can customize it to whatever you want anyways.<BR>6. The DRIVE-S cd-drive is one of the best. On a normal cd-player it would stop at one little smudge mark, but the DRIVE-S reads it anyways.<BR>7. Very easy installation<BR><BR>Cons:<BR>1. No front aux port, it is in the back.<BR>2. People have been saying that they are having trouble with hooking their satellite radio up to it.<BR>3. FM reception is not the best but is decent.<BR><BR>Overall the head unit is probably one of Sony's best (other than the flaws) and better than most of pioneer's that I heard. This is why i give it a 5 instead of a 4. I'm not obsessed with Sony or anything (i don't really care for the ps3) but i think Sony has good stuff for the price in the car audio business.

not good for multiple add ons.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I upgraded from the gt-400 because of the sirius add on radio problem and this unit had worse reception on FM than the gt-400. I do not like displays that keep running images while driving at night and shut it off and even with the radio off it keeps scrolling info. Maybe you can shut this off but with sirius raddio sny-1 not working I did not bother to try to disable. I returned the unit for a different model. If you want a fancy moving dispALY buy this unit. If you don't want a scrolling image display buy the gt-400 it's cheaper and sounds better. sirius radio did not work on this unit.

This is a great Stereo, Well worth the $200... Has 3 sets of preamp outputs so running all my amps is easy. The preset EQ3 has seven presets that make it great for a quick change of sound. It also has a powerful amp the puts out 52 peak x 4 channels. The great looking dot-matrix fluorescent display makes the inside of any car look better. All around this was a good choice, I have no complaints and Crutchfield supplies all the needed install gear FREE to get the job done right!!!!

Awesome cd player. Thanks Crutchfield :)

Lanny from Corbin, KY on 8/16/2006

I have had the sony gt-500 for well over a month now.<BR>The stereo is awesome and its sounds great. I noticed one review said that You can select a display but it will resort back to demo mode <BR>which is anoying at times. This is not true. If you follow the directions you can lock into a particular display screen and turn demo mode off.<BR><BR>Also I bought this particular stero for the mp3 feature<BR>and not the xm or sirius one. What I plan on doing is bying a Samsung Helix XM2go portable XM satellite radio/MP3 player. This way I have a portable xm player that I can plug it into the cord that I got with this unit. I have used my ipod shuffle with this unit and it sounds great but with an mp3 disk you really dont need too.<BR><BR>To sum it all up this is a great stereo that has a lot<BR>of nice features. The face plate removes easy and the remote works great. It also has auxillary inputs so you can plug anything into it. Plus it it plays homemade cd's really good. The cd's rarely ever skip unless you run over some rough rr tracks or similar. I give it 5 stars.

Will not work for xm direct tuners with Sony adapter

chris from Chicago, IL on 8/12/2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As a gift, I received the xm direct satellite tuner with the sony adapter. My old sony head unit lost the clock with xm and would not scroll info. So I purchased this unit to regain my clock and scroll info. After install, this unit would not recognize the xm hook-up. Talking with the Crutchfield advisors, we decided the unit was defective and I received a replacement one. After install on the second unit, the same problem occured. Called Crutchfield again, the rep noticed a note from Terk saying there is a software problem between the xm direct sony adaptor and the sony gt series. So if you are purchasing this for xm controls, don't bother, it will not work. <BR>

Great unit if you will never use the Satellite Radio tuners.

Stefan from Woodbury, CT on 8/9/2006

I bought this unit on impulse, and am very pleased with it, but there were a number of reasons that lead me to believe that I needed this stereo enough to buy it with no previous thought, other than the fact that my head unit of that time was going bad fast. The functions it had that I liked included its 2 pre-outs and one subwoofer pre-out, and auxiliary port, great screen, powerful amplifier, CD changer controls, and satellite radio ready. <BR><BR>If you look at these functions and notice they are the exact reason you want this unit, make sure you aren't counting on getting the satellite radio tuners used with the stereo. After you buy the radio tuner, bad things will happen. Half the time, the unit won't recognize the fact that the tuner exists, and there are also complications between the built-in CD player and the tuner, where most of the time the tuner will conflict with the CD player and the unit stops recognizing its own CD player. And even when the head unit doesn't recognize the satellite radio tuner, the CD player can still be MIA to the unit, leaving only the FM tuner, (and when you pay monthly for Satellite Radio, who wants to ever listen to commercial stations again?).<BR><BR>All in all, I recommend this stereo to everyone who never plans to use the satellite tuners that are sold separately. If you really want this head unit and you also want to listen to Satellite Radio (which I recommend), instead of getting the tuner and ignoring what I have said, purchase a separate receiver, which will acquire the satellite signal, display the song/artist right on it's screen, and send your music to your stereo via FM.<BR><BR>Peace.

no sirius for this unit

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

its simple, if you want to use sirius with this unit forget about it. As others have stated , when the sirius tuner is connected the cdx500 will randomly shut down, not recognize cds and sirius, also controls will freeze. I've tried two of these units and they both react the same when connected to sirius, they just don't work. the unit by itself is fine, so if you are not planning on using sirius its a decent unit.

Excellant Car Stereo

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

WOW! First, Crutchfield Rocks! Fast delivery and Great service when I called with a question. The deck is very cool. I got the Sony XA-110IP iPod Control Interface which was the purpose of getting the deck. It sounds excellant. No Bass or Treble, after hearing it turned up I don't need them. iPod control takes getting used to. I recommend turning off the random images, that was annoying. I replaced the factory Bose system (RSX Type-S) but left the speakers, used the PAC OEM2 and all works great. Very Pleased!!!!!! Very LOUD!!! Very Happy!!!

Sony CDX-GT500

rc240t from Ney York on 6/24/2006

Sony's GT500 has anice organic display, and some nice features like 3 preouts and sub fading, but THE SOUND QUALITY IS OF A $100 UNIT. THE CLARITY IS LESS THAN MEDIUM ABOUT THE SAME AS KENWOODS NEW $200 MODEL. The display is not reponsive and is more for decoration purpouses. You can select a display but it will resort back to demo mode which is anoying at times. my burnt cd's skip when I hit bump in my 02 stock mazda protege and it has average display clarity in the day time.<BR>

Nice HU if you don't plan to add the sirius tuner

bulkfryer from Georgetown, GA on 6/17/2006

Works great until you install sony sirius tuner. Then it can't find cd player and sirius goes in and out. Sony said they had software issues with the sirius tuner. I replaced it with pioneer and it works correctly.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome Headunit. Couldnt ask for more. My only problem is the Sirius Tuner has software bugs that screw up the headunit. I guess there are tons of customers with this issue. I will be sending it back and replacing with a different HU and tuner. Its a shame, because I really like this headunit. I might just keep it and get a portable Sirius unit instead.... Haven't decided. I really dont want to let this unit go.<BR><BR>To elaborate on the problem. The radio will radomly turn off, wont recognize CD's, the SR Tuner wont be recognized, and a few other various problems. This only happens when the sirius tuner is connected. If your not using Sirius, you wont have problems. If the Sirius tuner isnt connect, it works just fine...<BR><BR>Im giving the HU a full 5 star rating, its an awesome HU, however if I could rate the tuner for this, I would give it a 0, since it doesnt work. Sony, or Sirius, who ever builds the tuners has some work to do, because I am one customer, and not the only they are losing due to this inconvient issue.

great deck

Bill from tennessee on 6/3/2006

I just installed this cd player into my colorado. My friend and I installed it in about an hour mainly because it was our first time installing it and it went in with no problems at all. You can adjust the speakers to raise the vocals to ear level and many other settings as well. It has many displays that change as I drive. Everything hooked up fast and my sub seemed to be a lot louder and cleaner after changin decks. three aux puts are helpful when hooking up multiple subs or speakers, even an iPod which i plan to do soon. Crutchfield is amazing and so is sony. I recommend.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off, I want to commend Crutchfield, as many do, on their great service! The manuals and equipment sent with my headunit made installation a snap!<BR><BR>As for the headunit:<BR><BR>This little thing is awesome. I just installed it on my Liberty, and using the faceplate from Crutchfield, you couldn't tell that I had a CD/Tape combo deck before.<BR><BR>The display on this thing is awesome. Bright daylight and it is clear as crystal. I like how big it is too, there's lots of room there. A good feature is that you can choose how much info is displayed (EQ3 level, etc).<BR><BR>The EQ3 and DSO are great! I'm using the soundstage on level one for my tweeters, and the xplod eq3 and the sound is awesome (I recently replaced my stock speakers with some sony's). I love all the little features on this deck.<BR><BR>Only problem I've had so far is trying to hookup my iPod to the unit, but I'm sure it's something I'm doing wrong on my part.<BR><BR>Two thumbs up to this headunit, and two more for Crutchfield for their great customer service. I would definitely buy another Sony headunit, and most definitely from Crutchfield.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great stereo for the price. The other reviews are correct about that. I will let you in on the issues I did have with it though (this probably goes for most sony's). I was disappointed to find that it did not come with a case for the faceplate. Also, the aux input for the ipod is an RCA input which means you need a converter for the ipod that goes from RCA to line out. No big deal, just a heads up for anyone purchasing this model. The display is sweet and YES it does have 3 RCA outs for amps. 2 are normal and 1 set for subwoofer even though the discripton says it only has 2 RCA outs.

Installed in my wife's '99 Metro. Added XM at the same time and was very pleased with how easy this was to do. Very pleased with the unit and its features. My son is so impressed he is considering purchasing one for his vehicle.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very happy with this stereo. I installed it into a 2001 Jeep Wrangler with no problems. Even with the factory speakers which include a factory subwoofer I get excellent sound quality. I want ot update my speakers someday. But no complaints here. I love the display and it picks up burned CDs in a matter of seconds. I burn with Nero and like the feature that displays song titles. The Crutchfield Tech Support is excellent as well!

Changer Controls

Drive S: The CDX-GT500 features the Drive S chassis platform. Drive S includes the CD mechanism, audio stages, 12 V power supply, and tuner section. The CD mechanism includes a suspension to resist shocks, a motor that draws less power, and a fast low-current pickup that improves durability and CD playback accuracy. The 52W x 4 S-MOSFET Power IC produces clearer, more accurate sound, less distortion, and a higher signal-to-noise ratio than previous designs.

Satellite Radio Ready: You can connect a satellite radio tuner to the CDX-GT500 in a couple of ways. The unit is directly compatible with the SIRIUS SIR-SNY1 Satellite Tuner for Sony (item # 607SIRSNY1). The Terk XMDirect universal XM Satellite Radio tuner (209XMD1000) can be connected to and controlled by the head unit when used with the XMDirect Smart Adapter for Sony (209SON110).

Note: In addition to the optional satellite tuner, you will also need the proper antenna and a subscription to SIRIUS or XM Satellite Radio.

Full-Motion Fluorescent Display: The unit's fluorescent display technology gives you better resolution than conventional LCDs, and lets data transition faster for smooth, clean, solid movement of graphics. Using the Image button on the face of the unit, you can cycle through 3 wallpaper displays, 5 spectrum analyzer displays, and 3 motion displays. Using the Auto Image function, you can step repeatedly through the spectrum analyzer displays, motion displays, or all displays.

24-Bit Burr Brown D/A Converter:This digital-to-analog converter uses Advanced Segment architecture to achieve improved dynamic performance and resistance to clock jitter. Additionally, the digital-to-analog converter features a zero-bit detection circuit, which senses when all bits are low on a CD, and mutes the output for improved S/N ratio.

ATRAC CD Playback: The CDX-GT500 plays ATRAC3plus/ATRAC3 files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. Each ATRAC disc can have a maximum of 255 groups and 999 files.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play MP3/WMA files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. Each disc should have a maximum of 150 folders and 300 files/folders. During playback, the unit displays any recorded ID3 Tag information.

EQ3: You may select one of the following EQ presets: Xplod, Vocal, Edge, Cruise, Space, Gravity, or Custom. For each preset, you can adjust the following frequencies: Low (60 or 100 Hz), Mid (500 Hz or 1 kHz), and High (10 or 12.5 kHz). The level of each frequency can be adjusted from +10 dB to -10 dB in 1 dB increments.

BBE MP: When playing back MP3 files, the BBE MP circuit recovers and recreates harmonics, restoring the detail, warmth and nuances that existed in the original recording.

Dynamic Soundstage Organizer (DSO): Sony's Dynamic Soundstage Organizer uses proprietary circuitry to induce subtle phase shifts, simulating a sound source that is placed higher than the actual speakers in the vehicle. For example, when the DSO function is used in a vehicle equipped with speakers mounted low in the front doors, it creates virtual speakers in the dash to raise the soundstage. This unit offers three levels of DSO, each with a larger and higher soundstage. You can store the DSO setting for each source.

Best Tuning Memory (BTM): This feature selects stations with the strongest signals within the selected band and stores them in order of their frequency.

2V Mono Subwoofer Preamp Outputs: In addition to the 2V front and rear preamp outputs, this unit includes one set of 2V mono subwoofer preamp outputs. Although there are two female RCA subwoofer outputs, the same signal is carried by both connections. A low-pass filter (see below) can be used to filter high frequencies from the signals output by the subwoofer outs.

Low-pass Filter: The subwoofer preamp outputs have a selectable low-pass filter that may be set to 78Hz, 125Hz, or off.

Aux Lite Auxiliary Input: The CDX-GT500 has an auxiliary input on the rear panel, allowing you to connect a separate audio source, such as a portable MiniDisc or MP3 player, or the audio output from a mobile/portable DVD player. In the past, Sony receivers required a separate adapter, however, this unit's "Aux Lite" input allows you to directly connect the auxiliary unit to the receiver's stereo RCA input jacks.

Note:If a CD/MD changer is connected to this receiver, you will not be able to connect an auxiliary source without an adapter (158XA300).

Dimmer:This unit is equipped with a wire that Sony calls an illumination lead, however, it acts as a dimmer lead. When the dimmer mode is set to "Auto" and the illumination lead receives power, the display dims to a preset level. The display brightness is not affected by the vehicle's dimmer control. Also, the dimmer feature may be turned off, so dimming does not take place when the illumination lead receives power. You may choose to dim the display at all times by setting the dimmer mode to "On."

Note: For this feature to work, the unit's illumination wire must be connected to your vehicle's dash lights wire.

45-Degree Installation: For flexibility of installation, this unit can be mounted between 0 (horizontal) and 45 degrees.

Wired Remote Compatibility: In addition to the supplied wireless remote, the receiver can be controlled by an optional wired rotary commander (item 158RMX4S). Once the wired remote is connected, you can change the control direction of the remote, depending upon which side of the steering wheel you choose to mount the remote.

Changer Controls

Compatibility: This unit is compatible with Sony Unilink CD/MP3 and MD changers.

Optional Auxiliary Input: You can connect an auxiliary audio device (such as a portable digital memory player, cassette, MiniDisc, or VCR) when used with the optional XA-300 Unilink Auxiliary Input Adapter. The XA-300 uses the Unilink and Bus Audio inputs on the back of the receiver, and allows you to connect an optional CD/MD changer in addition to the auxiliary audio source.

Multiple Changer Control: A maximum of 5 CD changers, 5 CD/MP3 changers, or 5 MD changers may be connected to this receiver. When connecting CD, CD/MP3 and MD changers, you may connect up to a total of 7 changers (but there must not be more than 5 of one type of changer). When connecting more than one changer to this receiver, you must use the Sony XA-C30 source selector.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Off button once will turn off audio output, but the clock display and face/button illumination remain on. This makes the clock display and face/button illumination "Keyed" instead of "Unit On" only. To turn the unit off completely, you must press the Off button for two seconds.

Note: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you must turn the radio completely off (this defeats keyed operation), or you may wire the accessory power wire of this radio to an alternate source of accessory power to retain keyed clock and face/button illumination operation.
