Sonic satisfaction
The CDX-GT740UI packs some serious sonic tools. A premium 24-bit digital-to-analog converter brings out the best in your CDs, and the built-in amplifier offers impressive muscle. The 3-band parametric EQ allows you to target the precise high, midrange, and low frequencies you want to adjust, while the Dynamic Soundstage Organizer feature "raises" the soundstage so your music sounds more immediate and lively.

Built-in iPod® control and superior searches
You won't have to buy an iPod adapter for the CDX-GT740UI, and you'll discover that finding your favorite music files on a disc or your iPod is a breeze. You can search through hundreds of tracks quickly and easily with Quick-BrowZer®, or use Zappin™ to listen to short clips from your music while searching.

Play it all
The stereo plays just about any format on CD, including discs loaded with MP3, WMA, or AAC files. Front panel USB and auxiliary inputs let you add almost any audio source into your system.

You can expand your listening options by adding a Sony CD changer, satellite radio, or an HD Radio™ tuner. Three sets of preamp outputs make it easier to hook up outboard amplifiers. Sony includes a card-style wireless remote so you can keep your eyes on the road while you make adjustments.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the receiver, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

    Great Radio

Joshua from Newtown, CT on 3/26/2014

If you want a solid radio with superb features this is divinity the one to get! I built a boombox with it and it sounds great and can communicate with my subwoofer! It is easy to use! It works great with my KINGSTONE 16gb usb stick!! Nice equalizer features, sub cut off, animated menu and a nice display! It is a bit bright at night! The menu may be a little advanced for people that don't know much about electronics! Great sound, solid radio!

Pros: Great Sound robust, Solid design! SONY is one of the best! I had have it for one year is still going strong!

Cons: Menu is sort of complicated for beginners!

    sony stirikes out again

chris989 from las vegas on 7/22/2012

the sound if this unit is superb. I have had many sony unit over the years and this is by far the best for sound quality. How ever, SOny again misses the mark by a mile when it comes to basic function. Here is the list that is prompting me to dispose of this unit. 1- sub woofer volume level is six steps deep into the menu. Changing the volume of the sub is overly cluttered. this should be on click away. 2- the seek button is placed right between the "off" and "zap" buttons and actually lower in height. this makes selecting a next song a pain. Previous models had almost a paddle like arm, making forward and back very easy. 3- to bright at night. with all the other settings, can i not dim this infinitely. 4- changing the color only changes the text. the rest of the unit remains blue and this part does not dim. 5- the HPF feature will not separate rear from front speakers. Tune the front to pass all above 100 hz and the rear is now set the same. in the menu you can select front, rear, or all. Problem is it does not work. 6- never ending "remove the faceplate" alarm when the key is turned off. Unless you run only an amp through the RCA outputs, the faceplate alarm will sound every time the power is turned off. This amazing feature comes at no extra charge from sony. I was running a set of 3.5" speakers from the deck. 6.5's and 6x9's through my JL amp. The beeps are annoying enough i omitted the 3.5's.

    Pros: sound

Cons: tunable features and user control

    Very good!!

    2002 Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit replaced the stock unit in a 2002 Chevy PU. A big part of my decision was based on ease of navigation through lots of audio files on a USB drive. Not one single line display unit met my "ease of use" criteria. The 3 line display on this Sony does just that. It is very easy to flip through 32Gb of artists/albums/songs to find just what you want. The radio/cd controls are pretty much as expected. Something unexpected was how much better this head unit makes the stock speakers sound. It's a bit inconvenient having to flip the face down to put in a CD but with everything on flash drives now, cd's won't be used very often. The only thing lacking is a rear USB port. I'd like this so I could route an extension cable into the glove box or under the dash so my USB drive wasn't so obviously sticking out of my dash. Having a cable hanging down the dash is sort of OK. The Crutchfield supplied installation kit had everything needed to hook up the unit. Everything fit together and installation took maybe 20 minutes, not including soldering and heat shrinking all of the connecting wires in the wiring harness. All in all it made the installation simple enough for anyone to do. Had I simply twisted and taped the wiring harness together it wouldn't have taken any tools at all in my vehicle.

Pros: Ease of use, 3 line display, feature set, good sound, pretty flexible unit.

Cons: Sony's dancing light display is. Fortunately, it only takes a few seconds to turn it off. I'm not sure why anyone would want a dancing flashing light display on their dash at the corner of their vision while they're trying to drive.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Read the reviews while searching for a cd player for my 2002 Toyota Tundra. Was concerned about bypassing the factory amplifier and possibly loosing use of my factory tweeters in the front door. All those concerns were pleasantly washed away after installation (which is a snap in a Toyota and it looks perfect). Amazing sound, even before I started tweeking the settings. I haven't devoted a great deal of time to fine tuning the sound yet but this CD player pushes loud crisp and clean sound. I am so in love with this SONY and will undoubtedly by more SONY products in the future.

Pros: Its a SONY. Excellent sound tuning. Easy to read display and intuitive controls and menus. Love the big easy to grab volume knob.

Cons: The dial and button brightness doesn't dim and its VERY bright. The display will dim with my dash lights but the volume knob and buttons stay a bright beacon of blue. Also would be nice if all the illumination would change color, not just the screen.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just today (11-29-11) installed this deck, in my truck. It replaced an Alpine. I have a 96' Ford Bronco. With ALL Infinity Kappa speakers and the Infinity Bass Link II 250w sub/amp. My Alpine deck was good. I was just looking to update. It was a few years old. I was also looking for a unit that has, the fold down face AND aux port. I was skeptical, it being a Sony. But, it had everything I wanted and was on sale. lol TOTALLY IMPROVED my system. Sounds louder, bass hits harder etc. LOVE IT. HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend this deck. I don't know about really high wattage or for a competition system... but for something small just for everyday use like mine... ABSOLUTELY. Crutchfield was also OUTSTANDING. Ordering was so easy. Shipping was fast.

Pros: Just a totally awesome deck. Easy to use. Looks good.

Cons: There is NOTHING, not to like, about this deck.

For $200 I couldn't have gotten a better stereo. Most people would automatically overlook Sony for Pioneer or Alpine, but I've always been a fan of Sony products. Past experience, and word from friends who have owned Sony car stereos pointed me towards this unit and I haven't been disappointed for a moment. In fact, the sound, and performance of this stereo exceeded my expectation. The sound is superb, and loud for that matter, with excellent EQ options. The system is extremely easy to use, love the iPod functionality, and the entire UI is quick and very responsive. I haven't noticed a single bit of lag. I'd suggest this stereo to anyone looking for a single din stereo with great sound and features.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great head unit. I like the display, very easy to read, yet not so flashy that it is distracting. Easy to navigate through. FANTASTIC sound, absolutely phenomenal. Lots of "tunability" to get JUST the right sound. However, if you're not interested in dialing in the "perfect" sound, their pre-set equalizer settings are very good. Again, wonderful product. I would recommend it to anyone.

    Just OK

    2008 Mitsubishi Lancer
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This head unit is just OK... I love having the flash drive connection which is the main reason I bought it. I've been having issues though where the face plate will just lock up or reset. Somehow it's not getting a good connection to the pins on the cd player. This is rather annoying and will make your music stop until you push the face really hard onto the unit. It will then reset and start back playing where you left off. If you have any light what-so-ever shining on the face 9/10 times your remote will not work. The sub output on the back will play in full range. Sounds pretty stupid to me. Make sure you configure your amp or the headunit's settings before cranking it up. The bass level on the EQ settings changes your sub level settings and then you can change the sub level settings again on the LPF on the head unit. So unless you turn off the frequency range going to your mids, you are adjusting both the subs and the mids. To me it's kind of strange they would make the EQ a global setting.

    Nice upgrade!

This unit was easy to install in my '04 Tundra. The info and equipment that came free from Crutchfield made it easy. A few solder connections, a few screws...not hard to do! I run my Starmate Sirius unit thru the aux jack and an IPOD, or thumb drive in the USB jack and love it! I put new speakers (inc. tweeters ) in the doors and the sound in my regular cab Tundra is awesome now. I have since put a similar unit in my Avalon, but i went with the model up that has Bluetooth. Now I wish I had the Bluetooth feature here as well. I did call support for a few quick questions on both installs and they were great too! Thanks Crutchfield!

More features than I will ever use, clean clear sound and the front USB make this a great unit. With a 2gb flash drive I have nearly 25 cd's worth of music. Goodbye commercial radio! If I have any complaints it's a small one; the changeable color only applies to the controls and not the display.

This is a great stereo unit, very easy to use and sounds great! It has many good options for fine-tuning your system. Love the Aux and iPod input. I also like that you can choose between 3 colors (green is awesome!). Only complaints: I wish the preset buttons were bigger. It would also be nice to have a slightly more advanced dimmer, that dims everything. Setup was super easy with all the included instructions, thanks Crutchfield!

It really deserves a 5-star, but

RJ from Lynchburg, VA on 10/11/2010

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit does everything superbly, with one exception: I cannot determine the manner in which it determines playback sequence for mp3 files on a USB flash drive. I consulted Sony tech support, but their answer (alphabetically by file name) was simply not true. From my trial and error experience, there is some form of logic, but I have not yet uncovered it. Since some of my music (symphonies, concertos, operas, etc.) should only be played in a defined order, this is a problem for me. It is the only thing which prevents me from rating it 5-star.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this radio to replace my factory radio. It has good points as well as bad. I don't like the fact the colored buttons don't dim at night. Display does but not buttons. Red is the softest but I find if you use the others it is very distractingly bright. I also can not get my sound to be just right. Some songs sound good others don't. Sirius radio sounds bland on this radio. You either have your choice of song title, artist, channel or station name with Sirius as well but not all of the data at one time. The radio does pick up stations I have not heard around here in my vehicle in a long time. Good sensitivity. With USB port I will never needs CD's again. Put you music on a stick and change it when you want and have as much as you want. Looks very clean when installed and you can easily navigate through menus. Crutchfield gives you everything you need to get this installed in not time. My longest time was soldering wires. Installed in less than an hour. Excellent service.

I've always been partial to Sony products and this one doesn't disappoint. It's what I wanted: a simple, easy to use, and great sounding head unit. I love the fact it has the USB port in front to control my Ipod because I listen to my Ipod religiously. And also, having the AUX port is great so on road trips, my friends can plug in their mp3 players or phones and listen to their music on the stereo. I like the backlighting on the stereo because one of the options is red, so I leave it there to match the color of my truck. Great product Sony, and awesome customer service, as always, from Crutchfield.

I have had 3 Sony CDX units over the last 10 years, and I keep coming back for more! The sound shaping ability of this unit leaves nothing to be desired, but it's complicated to get it just right. Past Sony units have more simple menu's that allowed faster (and easier) sound modification that didn't include staring at the screen to be sure you weren't messing things up (kinda hard if you're driving)... but that's my ONLY gripe. Once you get it right... WOW. simply WOW.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a USB port or a front aux in for my iPod and this unit provided both. Having the USB port available is great because I no longer need to carry around a separate charger for my iPod. The feature that I really liked the most is that I can still control my iPod while it is plugged into the USB port to be charged unlike some other brands that have made browsing your iPod with the head unit time consuming. The display screen is very easy to read and has very nice graphics. Many of the animations are very cool to watch and add a little unique flair to the deck. The ability to change the color from blue to green to red is nice too. It was useful for me because I could select green to match some of the interior lights. It is extremely easy to navigate through this unit and it gives you many nice features to help customize your sound. I was able to get a really great sound from my stock speakers. I can't imagine how good my system will sound after I upgrade the rest of my sound system. The DSO settings are actually quite impressive too. Overall, I am very happy with this unit. For the price, it is really a great bargain especially buying it from Crutchfield as they include all the installation gear for free plus technical support for those who need it. If you are on a budget and want a head unit with great features, go for this Sony. You will not be disappointed! And if you are, Crutchfield will take care of you!

    Display Features

Detachable Fold-Down Face: The CDX-GT740UI features a detachable fold-down face for theft prevention. Two face-fixing screws are supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.

Caution Alarm: If you turn the ignition switch to the Off position without detaching the front-panel, the caution alarm will sound for a few seconds. The alarm will only sound if the built-in amplifier is used.

Fluorescent LCD Display: The full-motion, 4-line fluorescent LCD display makes it easy to read station and song information.

Image Modes: The unit's fluorescent LCD display offers your choice of display images: 3 spectrum analyzer displays, 3 static wallpapers, a full-motion movie, or combinations of displays that rotate through all categories.

Selectable Key Illumination: Illuminated keys help you find and select control functions in low light. The Sony  CDX-GT740UI offers selectable red, blue, or green button illumination to complement your vehicle's interior dash lighting.

Auto Scroll: This feature allows long displayed items to scroll automatically across the display when the track is changed on a disc.

Dimmer: You can manually dim the display at night, if desired. You can operate the display dimmer automatically, when the vehicle's lights are turned on, or manually. If the dimmer is set to automatic, the orange/white wire in the power harness must be connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit in order to properly work.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Off button once will turn off audio output, but the clock display and button illumination remain on. This makes the clock display and face/button illumination "Keyed" instead of "Unit On" only. To turn the unit off completely, you must press the Off button for two seconds.

Auto Off: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you can set the unit to turn off all lighting a set amount of time after you turn the power off. The Auto Off feature can be set to 30 seconds, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or No.

These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the CDX-GT740UI are as follows:

    • Continuous Power Output: 17 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Peak Power Output: 52 watts x 4-channels (208 total watts)

EQ 3 Parametric: You may select one of the following EQ presets: Xplod, Vocal, Edge, Cruise, Space, Gravity, Custom or Off (flat). For the Custom setting you can make your own equalizer settings. You can set the center frequency and bandwidth (Q) for the following bands: Low (60Hz or 100 Hz, Q: 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, or 2.0), Mid (500 Hz or 1 kHz, Q: 0.75, 1.0, 1.25, or 1.5), and High (10 kHz or 12.5 kHz, Q: 0.75 or 1.25). The volume levels of each band is adjustable from +10 dB to -10 dB in 1 dB increments.

Dynamic Soundstage Organizer (DSO): The CDX-GT740UI features the Dynamic Soundstage Organizer, which uses proprietary circuitry to virtually raise the soundstage and spread it wider across the dash. This is especially helpful if your vehicle has speakers mounted low in the door panels. There are three levels of DSO, each with an increasing amount of effect.

4V/6ch Preamp Outputs: The CDX-GT740UI contains three pairs of 4-volt RCA preamp outputs - front and rear pairs, plus another pair on a 10" pigtail for subwoofer operation. The subwoofer output is non-fading with a low pass filter with a selectable cut-off frequency of 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, 140Hz, 160Hz, or Off. You can adjust the subwoofer preamp output's volume level independently from the head unit's volume control from -10 to +10 in 1dB increments.

High-Pass Filter: The front and rear speaker outputs offer a selectable high-pass crossover frequency of 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, 140Hz, 160Hz, or Off. You can set the cutoff frequency for the front and rear channels independently or all together.

Beep Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

HD Radio Ready: The CDX-GT740UI is compatible with Sony's optional XT-100HD add-on HD Tuner (158XT100HD, sold separately) through its UniLink Bus connection. HD Radio technology, where available, offers higher quality sound than conventional analog broadcasts and receives text data. HD Radio provides FM broadcasts that are equal to CD sound quality and AM broadcasts that are as good as analog FM stereo broadcasts.
