About the Sony XS-GTR121L

Dave Delamere

Five sides equals big bass

The design of the Sony's GTR Series XS-GTR121L 12" 4-ohm subwoofer not only catches your eye, but it also helps give you better bass. The five-sided woofer cone reduces standing waves, which can diminish the bass output. The unique "dimple" design makes the cone more rigid so it'll hold its shape at high output levels, and it reduces the cone's weight so it's more responsive. You'll enjoy tight, accurate bass.

This XS-GTR121L handles up to 400 watts RMS, impressive for a sub in this price range. Even though the cone has five sides, this Sony still fits in a standard round opening in either a ported or sealed enclosure.

Product Research

Features

P5 Cone Design: The five-sided polypropylene cone uses a unique dimpled design; this stiffens the cone, resulting in lower distortion.

Surround: To improve cone motion control, the surround is made of ThermoPlastic Olefin (TPO), a combination of rubber, polypropylene, polyethylene, and a reinforcing filler.

Binding Posts: The binding post wire terminals will accept pin connectors, spade lugs, single banana plugs, and bare wire up to 8 gauge. The binding posts are spaced too far apart to accept dual banana plugs.

Enclosure Compatibility: This woofer can provide extended bass in sealed and ported enclosures:

  • Recommended Sealed Enclosure Volume: 0.84 ft³
  • Recommended Ported Enclosure Volume: 1.37 ft³ using one 4" diameter x 9-1/8" long port
