Overview

Our take on the Sony XS-GTR121L

The design of the Sony's GTR Series XS-GTR121L 12" 4-ohm subwoofer not only catches your eye, but it also helps give you better bass. The five-sided woofer cone reduces standing waves, which can diminish the bass output. The unique "dimple" design makes the cone more rigid so it'll hold its shape at high output levels, and it reduces the cone's weight so it's more responsive. You'll enjoy tight, accurate bass.

Five sides equals big bass

This XS-GTR121L handles up to 400 watts RMS, impressive for a sub in this price range. Even though the cone has five sides, this Sony still fits in a standard round opening in either a ported or sealed enclosure.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 300 and 600 watts RMS at 4 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

Best $50 u ever spent

Jon from PENNSYLVANIA on 12/16/2016

These subs are a steal for $50. I see a lot of people online saying bad things about Sony Xplods. But they're entry level subs and Sony doesn't pretend they're more than that. You can't compare these to Rockford Fosgate "Power" series and then say the Sony is junk because the Rockford outperformed it. The Rockfords literally cost 10 times more. Dollar for decibel, these are tips. If your looking for a hard hitting, every day subwoofer, this is exactly what you need. I had a pair of these I bought here from Crutchfield awhile back. I powered them with 600 watts RMS each. And they were far louder than I ever thought possible at this price point. I had them for a few years until I had to sell them. Since then I've had several pairs of subs. All in 500-600 watts range and triple the price of these Sonys. But the Sony's were just as good as all the others. Including Rockford P2s and P1s, Pioneer Champions, Kicker CVR. If you want a windshield cracker that will hit 150 db, then you better dig deep in your wallet and buy something else. But if you want loud, clear, bass that rattles your mirror off and the kick drum feels like a punch in the chest, these are the way to go. For $50, if you send these enough power, people at stoplights will be mad at you.

Pros: PRICE, PRICE, PRICE These perform like far more expensive subs.

Cons: The only con is when you tell people you have a Sony explod, they roll their eyes. But if you have the right amp on these, one listen will change their mind quick.

Do not sleep on these if you aren't trying to go win a competition. If you're a bass head and not looking to spend a ton of money, get em. If you were considering buying them, do it right now. They can handle a good amount of power. I'm pushing 3000 watts and 480 rms x 2 and they sound fantastic. I have a buddy with jbl audio two twelves using 3400 watts and he's put a lot more money and time into his and mine sound the same if not better

Pros: Quality sound and a good price

Cons: Not one I could point out

Features

P5 Cone Design: The five-sided polypropylene cone uses a unique dimpled design; this stiffens the cone, resulting in lower distortion.

Surround: To improve cone motion control, the surround is made of ThermoPlastic Olefin (TPO), a combination of rubber, polypropylene, polyethylene, and a reinforcing filler.

Binding Posts: The binding post wire terminals will accept pin connectors, spade lugs, single banana plugs, and bare wire up to 8 gauge. The binding posts are spaced too far apart to accept dual banana plugs.

Enclosure Compatibility: This woofer can provide extended bass in sealed and ported enclosures:

  • Recommended Sealed Enclosure Volume: 0.84 ft³
  • Recommended Ported Enclosure Volume: 1.37 ft³ using one 4" diameter x 9-1/8" long port

Why did you buy this?

I made a box for this and it looks like a really nice subwoofer and it had good reviews. [ Mason  Nov 03, 2016 ]
Rms rating, price, brand. [ Robert  Sep 06, 2016 ]
Because i received one as a gift and your web site says to use subs of the same watts and ohms, now just have to match the the two subs with the right amp already ordered the box from you which fits great [ Tommy  Jun 29, 2016 ]

This does have the screw type of terminals. The terminals that you can unscrew to insert the wire, spade, or pin connector. Then you screw it back to long that in place. HTH! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=101 [ Paul  Sep 12, 2016 ]  Staff
Yes absolutely, well in most cases a 12 inch sub would fit an 11inch cut out, but somesubs require modifying the cut box should check the specs look for cut out diameter to just be sure [ Tommy  Aug 22, 2016 ]
