Our take on the Sony HT-CT260

Your HDTV looks awesome. But when you turn up the volume, it doesn't really sound awesome. The reason for that? Well, because lots of people like their TVs to be as thin as possible while delivering a big screen size, the built-in speakers are tiny.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It took me a few years to decide to give space, time and money for a soundbar. I'm glad I did.

Pros: Easy to setup. Subwoofer makes attractive small table. Sound is better than it was without soundbar. Crutchfield free shipping good. Sound fills larger than average room.

Cons: Optical cable a bit short (must it be?). Some TV programs do not utilize subwoofer.

    Awesome Sound

George Z from Zephyrhills Florida on 10/28/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well if you made it this far you have done your homework. I did mine and purchased this soundbar because of the Sony name, reviews, and price. It puts the TV speaker to shame and sounds great. Easy set up out of the box and the wireless sub woofer is the ticket. Awesome sound for a mid priced soundbar with a wireless sub and would recommend to anyone looking for a mid priced system. If you want to spend less and can live with less features and a wired sub Sony makes a cheaper one that is also miles ahead of your TV speakers.

Pros: Easy set up, Awesome sound, Great price, Can't go wrong with Crutchfield customer service and fast shipping.

Cons: Bluetooth will not pair with windows 8.1 computers.

    Enjoy the Sony HT-CT260

Woody from Hilo, HI on 10/28/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Initial setup was mildly difficult due to unclear instructions but once installed the sounds of the TV were vastly improved. You are in the middle of the action scenes as the sounds jump out at you. The sounds of the sub woofer first catches you by surprise; had to tone it down but it has a great effect. I had checked this out on Consumer Reports prior to purchase; lives up to its ratings! Crutchfield had a super price that was irresistible + good communication.

Pros: Movies, especially action movies Wireless sub woofer makes it an easy installation

Cons: Mild setup difficulty with unclear instructions

    Good sound support

Jim from Coeur d'Alene, Id on 10/25/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great improvement over the TV's sound system and much easier to use that the surround system that I use for movies. Because the on/off and volume are controlled through the TV's remote it is a seamless addition. The sub woofer and sound bar produce clear clean sound with rich base. It is super easy to set up, essentially plug and play.

Pros: Good sound, easy set up, Bluetooth for other sources like the phone or computer, blends in with the looks of my TV which is also a Sony.

    Cons: None really

    Excellent Soundbar

Michael from Seymour, CT on 8/7/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent soundbar! Set up is a breeze. I bought this to go with my LG 55LS5700. Like most people, I needed better sound than the speakers on the tv can provide. Wall mounting doesn't get any easier than this. I was able to pair up my iPod via Bluetooth with ease. Sony did very well with this product. The only drawback is the three foot optical cable they's too short. Other than that, I'm very happy with this purchase!

Pros: Easy set up, crisp sound, easy iPod/Smartphone Bluetooth pairing, wireless subwoofer, preset equalizers offer great sound options, great selection for the money.

Cons: Optical cable is to short, customizing settings could be a little less clunky.

    Nice sound

ChasPW from Ashburn VA on 5/25/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This sound bar is a great improvement over the sound put out by the TV speakers. It was well-packed by Sony. The box had two holes but no damage to the contents. No problems in set up. The various settings such as Standard, Movies etc. made little difference in the sound that I heard. I should note that I use hearing aids so my personal reception of sound is no longer normal.

    Pros: Good sound.

    Cons: None

the best sony sound system I've ever owned

padre from honolulu hi on 5/17/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I originally ordered the Sony sound bar I did not expect the amount of bass and sound to come out of both component's. I replaced a older 5.1 Sony surround system. So far no complaints especially with the Bluetooth to play Pandora off of your cell phone. I would highly recommend this product.

Pros: Bluetooth, portability, sound projected from sound bar

    Cons: None

    Exactly What I Needed

Nelsonrock from Menominee, MI on 5/13/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fully Satisfied; The wireless subwoofer is 20 feet away and works perfectly; The set up is amazingly easy. The optical cord was long enough for my Sony 55" flat screen. The sound is great. If I was forced to nit pick, I would say the speakers lack a little in the mid-range. But you more than get your money's worth for the price.

Pros: Great sound; Easy set up; Wireless subwoofer

Cons: Mid-range could be slightly stronger.

    Perfect for our living room

Steve H. from Edmond, OK on 5/11/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I read all of the reviews on Crutchfield and several on other websites, so I knew what to expect from the CT-260. It meets and exceeds my expectations. The sound is perfect for our living room, which is also open to our kitchen and dining area. Overall, the sound covers probably covers a 30' x 20' area. It's a SONY, so I knew it would sound crisp and clear, even at louder volumes (which it does). I don't have any problems with connecting to our LG TV using the remote. Then again, I'm also not trying to program everything to work together, using different remotes for the TV and speakers is not that big of a deal for me. I could see how some people are disappointed if trying to use this in a "home theater", but I think you need to be realistic in your expectations. On a side note, I also purchased the CT-150 (200 watt) SONY sound bar system for a smaller room, the CT-260 sounds a lot better and offers better features.

Pros: Sufficient power, crisp clean sound, wireless subwoofer, blue-tooth, contemporary design

    Cons: None

    Great Sound Bar!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This a great sound bar! The sound is awesome and set up was a breeze! I have a medium sized living room and this sound bar fills it wonderfully. The wireless sub woofer paired itself automatically to the sound bar and really brings out the bass in movies.

Pros: Great sound. Easy set up. Looks good.

    Cons: None yet.

It's not a bad speaker but it just doesn't do enough for me for the price. I would just spend a Hundred or so more and get a bigger system with wireless speakers.

Pros: It was a good sound bar.

Cons: Not enough bang for the buck

    Excellent product. Easy to install.

Pros: Pretty easy to install. I used the digital optical cable and everything else was a matter of adjusting the different options with the remote control.

Cons: If your TV does not have optical digital capability, you need to order an additional RCA cable (red and white).

Drew from DuPont, WA on 2/24/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fantastic sound and easy set-up. As mentioned in other reviews, the Optical cord is too short, but that's an easy item to replace. I use this with my main TV in my family room and it is a huge improvement in sound over the flat screen speakers. The Bluetooth streaming is awesome - I can play music from my phone without having to plug in to the system. Sound is clear and if you want to crank it up there is plenty of power with the subwoofer to rattle the walls. Highly recommend.

Pros: Easy to set up, great sound, wireless subwoofer, Bluetooth

    Cons: Optical cord too short

Hank144 from Philadelphia, PA on 2/7/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit has fabulous audio and ample controls to set up to your taste. TV voice dialogue marvellously clear. Makes you want to get up & dance to the music you're playing. The cons below are just minor glitches and no great hassle. No: if you've had a 5.1 or 7.1 six 0r 7 speaker surround system like we did in another house, you won't feel like you're on the Holodeck or the Enterprise engines rumbling around & beneath you, but you're not spending $1000+, running wires all over & filling up a space with all those speakers. So modify your expectations and you'll love this Sony.

Pros: Wireless subwoofer. Great bass! Blutooth. Analog input for MP3 players, etc. Optical audio connection.

Cons: No HDMI inputs. Optical connector that comes with it is a on the short side if you place it on furniture, instead of wall just below HDTV, esp if you run wires thru wall.. Remote control ergonomics not so hot.. Needed tech support-who solved problem- as after set-up sound was great but Sony unit completely disabled remote on our Panasonic Viera TV. User's manual could be clearer.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just set it up in my shop yesterday, so I dont't have long term usage of the system. It is definitely better sound than the flat screen tv that it is paired with.

Pros: Easy to set up and operate. I feel if it were in a living/bedroom/family room situation of average size it would have plenty of power.

Cons: The system could use a little more power for my larger two stall garage/shop. As I stated in my review, it is much better than the tv speakers.

    Great Sound!

Great soundbar for a very reasonable price - better than the cheapies by far but didn't break the bank. Very easy install and the sound is great. Optical cable is very handy for connection to your set. Handsome unit that fits right in with my system.

Pros: Easily installed and simple operation.

Cons: Could be easier to wall mount

Jerry G from Hemet, Ca. on 1/15/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My hearing is degraded and my TV speakers are also poor quality, so was having a problem understanding a lot of TV speech. I read about the Product in C.U. I had never purchased from Crutchfield before but knew of their reputation from friends and reading. AND, they were having a sale on the sound bar. I bought on the Internet. The item was out of stock, BUT less than a week later I was notified that the item had been shipped. It arrived about 5 days later (free shipping Va. to Ca.). I had the system upand running within 1 hour of arrival. Music sounds GREAT. Still having a problem understanding some speech, but that's improved some, also. I will mount the Bar above the TV so it appears the Bar is part of the TV, using the four threaded Wall mount nuts on rear of TV wall and home made alum bars.

Pros: High quality product. Easy setup.

    Cons: None.

    JJ from Ohio on 1/13/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was not expecting this much from the small unit. Installed with optical cord in less than 5 minutes. The blue tooth feature is pretty cool when you want to listen to music from you phone or tablet. There are much better units out there but not at this price.

Pros: Exceptionally easy setup. Great looks, deep rich bass.

Cons: Would be much better if you could work volume on TV remote. Does work on cable remote but you need the smart tv remote to operate the TV features and unless you have a Sony TV your kinda stuck.

    Satisfied But Not Totally

Mauiman from Maui, HI on 1/10/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am relatively satisfied with the Sony soundbar -- I realized it would not be as good as a true surround sound system. Having said that, the following things could be better. The dialog enhancement feature is in the "Night" mode for lower volume level listening. It is not too noticeably different than dialog clarity in the "Standard" setting. The digital optical audio cord furnished with the soundbar is only 1 meter long, probably only suitable if you are setting the soundbar directly in front of your TV. Soundbar would be more versatile if it had at least one HDMI input/output. Other than that, I am satisfied with the ease of set-up/installation and the sound quality. Haven't really had a chance to test it with a true surround sound blu-ray or 3D DVD yet so can't comment on how it performs. Streams music via blue tooth very well. Seems to work fine with a "universal remote". It has a nice appearance in our TV cabinet.

Pros: Sub-woofer can be set anywhere in the room where an electrical outlet is located. Less than 40" long Blue Tooth capable Looks good

Cons: No HDMI; Digital Optical Audio cord may be too short for many locations; Dialog enhancement could be better

I received great advice from the Crutchfield representative. The Sony soundbar is working great, both with the TV and all of the related components and with any iPods connected directly to it. We are very pleased.

Pros: Sound quality, ease of use, enough inputs that matter

    Cons: None so far.

No problems so far. Very easy to set up. Took longer to get everything out of the box than to set up. Wanted something so I could listen to the radio, works perfect with my iPhone bluetooth & I heart radio.

Cons: Have cable & I can't use the volume on my cable remote. Have to use sound bar remote. Not a big deal.

    The Sony HT-CT260 Is Excellent

mldmediaman from Compton, Illinois on 12/9/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Connected the HT-CT260 with a Sony 65' XBR and what a perfect fit. Clean lines and easy set-up buy archaic programming. The sound is clear and precise. The Bluetooth capability is absolutely fantastic... Pairing with the NEW Ipad was quick and painless. Sony should be pleased with their new offering. Though the programming modes are quite cumbersum to enter and step-thru, the product is so enjoyable that I still gave FIVE stars.

    Pros: Almost everything but..

Cons: Stepping through the set-up 'AMP MENU' using the arrow keys is most cumbersome and certainly less than fitting for such an otherwise wonderful product. As stated earlier, the Optical interconnect cable (provided) is much too short and basically useless.

AdRock011 from Rochester, NY on 11/29/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this product seeking a low profile, clutter free replacement for my old school boxy all-in-one shelf stereo. I simply needed something compact but powerful and reliable. If your situation is similar - this really is the product for you. Setting up was a breeze really, though I was a bit annoyed that the optical cable is only about 2 feet long. Many will find they have to go buy their own. No coax/component audio or analog 3.5" jacked wires are supplied which makes no sense given how it must cost Sony pennies to produce. Anyway - the unit sounds great and is easy to operate after you give manual a good read. It auto detects Dolby broadcast streams and automatically optimizes for best sound. You can also tweak the sound dynamics (movie, talk, music, sports). The Bluetooth connectivity is a HUGE bonus for those with smartphones. Who doesn't love less wires? Speakers produce crisp and clear sound Subwoofer is adequate. I don't think though you'd want this system for a great room or large living area, since it doesn't have the heft to fill large rooms. Small living rooms and bedrooms only and you got yourself a perfect, low cost solution!

Pros: Sounds Great, Sleek Design, Wireless Capability

Cons: No wires supplied except much too short Optical Cable

    Product Research

Overview: The Sony HT-CT260 Home Theater System is a two-piece surround sound system which includes an amplified soundbar speaker and a wireless powered subwoofer module. This two-piece home theater system brings simplicity and performance together by pairing an self-amplified soundbar speaker and a wireless powered subwoofer to create a surround sound experience in a compact and easy to install package. The HT-CT260 Home Theater System features Dolby Digital & DTS decoding, along with S-Force Front Surround; plus built-in Bluetooth. The HT-CT260 includes an IR remote control for wireless operation of the system.

Amplified Soundbar Speaker: The HT-CT260's soundbar speaker houses two full-range, cone-type oval (2.25" x 3.25") drivers in a bass reflex enclosure, powered by a 85-watt x 2-channel S-Master digital amplifier. The soundbar speaker acts as your home theater systems front and center speakers as well as giving you the effect that you have rear speakers positioned behind you. The soundbar speaker can be securely placed on a stand or shelf via its two integrated feet, or even wall mounted using its two rear-mounted keyhole slots (mounting screws sold separately). The soundbar speaker's keyhole slots are spaced 10-3/16" apart.

Wireless Powered Subwoofer: The HT-CT260 wireless powered subwoofer is equipped with a down-firing 5.125" cone-type woofer in a bass-reflex enclosure (down-firing port), powered by a built-in 130-watt S-Master digital amplifier. The wireless powered subwoofer gets its signal from the system's soundbar wirelessly, via the two included 5.8GHZ wireless transceivers (installed in the back of soundbar and subwoofer). The wireless powered sub can be placed virtually anywhere in your room. There are no extra audio cables to run; you do have to plug the powered sub into an AC outlet.

S-Force Pro Front Surround: S-Force Pro Front Surround provides realistic surround sound from this two-piece home theater system. Unlike other "virtual surround" technologies, rear sound is generated from the soundbar speaker using sophisticated digital sound processing and does not need to be bounced off of side walls.
