About the Sony HT-CT660

Better TV sound with less clutter

Looking to give your favorite TV shows and movies a boost in sound quality? Here's a way to do it without filling your room with equipment. The Sony HT-CT660 features 330 watts of total system power, so it will have the air crackling with excitement, whether you're watching a Blu-ray movie, DVD concert, or ballgame on TV, or even playing your favorite video game. You get three HDMI inputs for high-def sources, making it easy to switch between your HD cable box, Blu-ray player, and game console. The sound bar is designed to blend right in with your 46" or larger Sony BRAVIA® TV. It sits on your TV stand or mounts easily on the wall. There's even an IR (infrared) repeater so if you're placing it in front of your TV's remote eye, the repeater re-sends commands from your TV remote — no need to stand up and aim around the sound bar to change channels.

    Product Research

    Features

2.1Ch Home Theater System: The Sony HT-CT660 Home Theater System is a two-piece surround sound system which includes an active soundbar speaker and a wireless powered subwoofer module. This two-piece home theater system brings simplicity and performance together by pairing a self-amplified soundbar speaker and a wireless powered subwoofer to create a surround sound experience in a compact and easy to install package. The HT-CT660 Home Theater System features Dolby Digital & DTS decoding, along with S-Force Front Surround; plus built-in Bluetooth and Near Field Communication (NFC). In addition to these advanced audio features, the HT-CT660 system provides HDMI v.1.4 switching with 4K and 3D-pass-through. The HT-CT660 includes an IR remote control for wireless operation of the system.

Active Soundbar: The Sony HT-CT660's active soundbar speaker features a 2-way, 4-driver mica-reinforced speaker system powered by a built-in 100W (peak) x 2ch S-Master digital amplifier for exceptional sound clarity. The soundbar houses two 0.75" dome tweeters and dual 2" x 3.5" midrange drivers. These poly-mica composite speakers are ridged and durable, yet provide for a big sound and minimal distortion. The HT-CT660 lets you experience amazing highs and lows in incredible detail and clarity. The soundbar speaker acts as your home theater system's front and center speakers, as well as giving you the effect that you have rear speakers positioned behind you. The soundbar speaker's hexagonal design allows you to conveniently position the soundbar speaker for the optimal listening experience. The soundbar speaker can be securely placed on a stand or shelf via its two integrated foot, or even wall mounted using its two rear-mounted keyhole slots (integrated-foot must be removed; mounting screws sold separately). The soundbar speaker's keyhole slots are spaced 26.75" apart.

Wireless Powered Sub: The HT-CT660 wireless powered subwoofer is equipped with a down-firing 6.25" cone-type woofer in a bass-reflex enclosure (down-firing port), powered by a built-in 130-watt (peak) S-Master digital amplifier. This wireless powered sub produces deep, accurate bass response for your movie and music soundtracks. The wireless powered subwoofer gets its signal from the system's soundbar wirelessly (5.8GHz). The wireless powered sub can be placed virtually anywhere in your room. There are no extra audio cables to run; you do have to plug the powered sub into an AC outlet.

HDMI (ver.1.4): The Sony HT-CT660 features 3 HDMI (ver.1.4) inputs and 1 HDMI (ver.1.4) output which supports 4K pass-through, 1080/24p video, x.v.Color, Deep Color, and 3D; as well as ARC and standby pass-through. The system can detect and receive the best possible video and audio signals from all connected devices via HDMI, making connection and performance as simple as plugging in a single wire. Sony's HDMI Active Intelligence, transmits both audio and video signals through one HDMI cable. The system's HDMI inputs/output support 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, and 4K.

    • 4K Pass-Through: 4K Pass-Through allows the Sony HT-CT660 to receive super high-definition resolution video and pass the video signal to a 4K compatible TV or display monitor. This ensures compatibility with the latest super high resolution video formats.
    • 1080/24p: The Sony HT-CT660 allows you to watch movies at their native frame rate 24p format (24 frames per second) when paired with a 24p playback device like a Blu-ray Disc Player.
    • 3D-Ready: The Sony HT-CT660 is compatible with 3D-ready Blu-ray disc movies, video games and other 3D content through its HDMI (v.1.4) connections. 3D viewing requires 3D-ready source with 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D glasses, and high-speed HDMI cable. Other 3D accessories may also be required.
    • Deep/x.v.Color: The Sony HT-CT660 also supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture.
    • Standby Pass-Through: You can conveniently access all your HDMI connected devices without having to power on the HT-CT660 system.
    • ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to the HT-CT660 system through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.
Note: The HT-CT660 system does not feature composite, S-video, or component video inputs/outputs.

S-Force Pro Surround 3D Technology: By using powerful digital Sony S-Master digital amplifiers (330W total peak power) and DSP (Digital Signal Processing) technology, realistic surround sound can be generated from this two-piece surround sound system. Unlike other "virtual surround" technologies, rear sound is generated from the soundbar speaker using sophisticated digital sound processing and does not need to be bounced off of side walls. No matter what the size or shape of the room or what is on the wall, it is possible to hear sounds from behind you without needing to place speakers behind you. You can select from one of the following soundfields to optimize your surround sound experience.

    • Standard: Suits various sources.
    • Movie: Recreates powerful and realistic sound, along with clear dialogue.
    • Drama: Suited for TV dramas.
    • Music: Suited for music programs or music videos on Blu-ray Discs/DVDs.
    • Sports: Produces the play-by-play commentary clearly and realistic sound with surround effects, such as cheering.
    • News: Produces the announcer's voice clearly.
    • Game: Produces powerful and realistic sound, suited for video games.
    • 2CH Stereo: Suited for music CDs.
    • Portable Audio: Suited to replay portable compressed audio source (available only on DM Port).
Note: You can set a different soundfield for each input source.

Digital Surround Formats: The HT-CT660 supports the following digital audio formats.

    • DTS: DTS, DTS HD High Resolution, DTS HD Master Audio, DTS 96/24
    • Linear PCM: 2ch (48 kHz or less), 5.1ch (96 kHz or less), or 7.ch (192 kHz or less)
Note: Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution, and LPCM 7ch is only supported via HDMI.

Digital + Analog Audio Inputs: The Sony HT-CT660 home theater system features both analog (minijack) audio and digital (optical) audio inputs for connecting external audio sources such as your DVD player and CD player. There is single minijack (3.5mm) analog audio input one optical (toslink) digital audio input, and one coaxial (RCA) digital audio input.

Audio Adjustments: The HT-CT660 home theater system offers various audio adjustments to customize your music or movie listening experience.

    • Voice/Sub Level: You can adjust the voice level (+/-6dB) to increase dialogue clarity. You can also adjust the level (+/-6dB) of the wireless powered sub independently from the main volume.
    • Bass & Treble: You can adjust the system's bass and treble independently from -6 to +6 dB.
    • Auto Volume: Auto Volume adjust the volume automatically depending on the input signal or content from the connected equipment. This function is useful, for example, when the sound of a commercial is louder than the TV programs.
    • Audio DRC: This feature narrows the dynamic range of a Dolby Digital/DTS sound track for enjoying movies at low volume.
    • Night Mode: You can enjoy sound effects and hear the dialogue clearly even at a low volume levels using this function.
    • A/V Sync: You can delay the sound using this function when the image is slower than the sound when you are playing a Dolby, Digital, DTS or Linear PCM source connected by a digital audio input or HDMI. The A/V sync delay is set at 70 msec.

Built-in Bluetooth w/ Near Field Communication (NFC): Utilizing Near Field Communication and Bluetooth, you can connect and wirelessly stream stored music and music apps from your smartphone, tablet or other Bluetooth & NFC enabled device. The Sony HT-CT660 home theater system features built-in Bluetooth (ver. 3.0) technology with A2DP/AVRCP.  You can wirelessly stream and enjoy music from your smartphone, PC, tablet, music player, or other Bluetooth-enabled devices through the Sony HT-CT660. You can manually pair your device with the HT-CT660 or use Near Field Communication (NFC) to automatically pair your device with integrated NFC tag. Up to 9 devices can be paired (only one can be played at a time). Once you have paired your Bluetooth-enabled device, your mobile device will automatically connect with the soundbar speaker when in range (up to 33'). The soundbar will then automatically turn-on and start to stream music from your mobile device without any additional steps or having to turn on additional components. The included remote can control basic playback functions (Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Reverse, Previous/Next Track) of your connected Bluetooth-enabled device.

Note: NFC is compatible with Android smartphones (2.3.3 or later, excluding 3.x). You will also need to download the NFC Easy Connect App onto your compatible Android smartphone from Google Play. The NFC tag of the HT-CT660's soundbar speaker is located on its top-panel. Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Sony HT-CT660.

Programmable Remote w/ HDMI Control & IR Pass-Through: The HT-CT660 comes supplied with a full-function IR remote control for wireless operation of the system. The IR remote is programmable and offers HDMI control. The HT-CT660 also provides and IR pass-through function on the soundbar speaker.

    • Programmable: In addition, the remote can be used to operate basic functions (Power On/Off, Volume Up/Down, Input) on select Sony, Samsung, LG, Panasonic, Vizio, Sharp, Toshiba, and Funai TVs.
    • HDMI Control: HDMI Control allows you to easily manage and operate an HDMI Control compatible television and other audio/video components with a single remote, when all components are connected via HDMI. By connecting HDMI-CEC components operation is simplified in the following ways -
      • One-Touch-Play: When you playback a component such as a DVD/Blu-ray Disc Player, the receiver and the TV are turned on automatically and switch to the appropriate HDMI input.
      • System Audio Control: While watching TV, you can select to output the sound from the TV speaker or the speakers connected to the receiver.
      • System Power Off: When you turn off the TV, the receiver and connected components are also turned off simultaneously.
    • IR Pass-Through: With many other soundbar systems, placing the soundbar speaker on your TV stand can be problematic and block the TV's remote control sensor, forcing you to stand up and angle your remote to control your TV. The HT-CT660 soundbar speaker's features an IR repeater pass-through which allows your TV remote control commands to pass-through the front of the soundbar to the TV behind it, eliminating this problem.

Auto Standby: You can reduce the system's power consumption. The system enters standby mode automatically when you do no operate the system for approximately 30 minutes and the system is not outputting sound for approximately 30 minutes.

    Q
Can I use this on a 55" tv?

    A
Yes....I have a Sony 55" on a 5' by 3' deep stand. I have to move the sound bar away from the remote receiver on the TV...so I I move it slightly to the right and the remote reception is not interfered with by the sound bar. Love the sound bar and the bass. So clear and it enhances the low volume from the Sony tv. Excellent choice for the price.

    Q
Can anyone comment on the Voice/Sub Level that allows a user to adjust the voice level (+/-6dB) to increase dialogue clarity? Specifically, I am interested to know if the unit can reduce dynamic range adequately so that the difference between dialogue and other noises (ie explosions) is not so pronounced. Looking for a way to watch a movie without waking the kids. Thanks.

yes. I have a 60 inch aand it sounds great.

I am very happy with the sound bar. You run an HDMI cable from your set top box to the sound bar. Then run an HDMI cable from an output on the sound bar to thd TV. If your HDMI input on the TV is marked "ARC" you don't have to audio cables. The HDMI cable will carry the audio back and forth.

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't. I'm using mine with a new Vizio LED TV and it works great.

Yes Micheal, it should work well. This is an EXCELLENT sound bar for the money!
    kurt  Jan 23, 2014
    A
Micheal, The dimensions of the soundbar are 40-1-2" wide and 4-1/2" high. If those dimensions work with your TV and it also has an optical in plug this HT-CT660 will work for you. I love mine, setup is easy and the Bluetooth function is great. Good Luck
    andrew  Jan 22, 2014
    A
I would think so. I have only used it for music and it fills the large room I have it in very nicely.
    david w  Jan 22, 2014
    A
Yes it will fit a 42". Not sure how you have your flat screen set up but our 55" Sony Bravia sits on a stand with the sound bar in front of it. Because the sound bar is about 5 inches tall we had to raise the TV so the sound bar wouldn't interfere with the sensor for the TV. When using the TV remote the sounds bar blocked the signal so we raised the TV by putting 2x4's under the TV stand. That raised the TV just perfect. If you have your TV mounted to a wall no issues then. Hope this helps.
    james  Jan 22, 2014
    A
I have a similar pairing and am extremely pleased. That sound bar is easy to set up and has great sound. If both the tv and the sound bar sit on the same surface make sure it doesn't block the bottom of the tv and interfere with remote signals.
    herbert  Jan 22, 2014

As long as you have the right connections in back of the TV, the size of the TV does not matter. This Sony HT-CT660 will connect to optical and Mini Stereo Audio Inputs. Read Specs.

    A
Sure. It will work with any newer TV. I like it because it really cleans up all the wiring, especially with multiple inputs such as cable, Apple TV, Blue Ray,etc. The subwoofer is wireless too, so it's a very neat installation.

Because this is a X-Mas gift, I have not opened it yet. However, after looking in the stores and on line for some time now This is a Sony and for the price it is the best...I have no issues that it will sound fantastic...and Crutchfield support is another reason I buy from them. I under stand you can get a sound bar bracket to allow you to mount it on top of your TV. Once I hook up my CT660 I will make that decision. I am jazzed to get it playing...just in time for the Bowl Games. I recently bought a new Car Stereo and speakers from them, and they guided me thru the whole thing...it sound fantastic! it's all good....

The system works well to clean up all the connections, but it has an annoying feature, at least they way I need to use it. When the SONY is on, then the sound signal is not sent to the TV. The HDMI sound signal only goes to the TV when the SONY is turned off. This is a problem for me when I need to send the TV sound out to a Bluetooth transmitter.

Yes it is. I have mine connected to a Sony TV and I just power it down and listen to the TV speakers. Hope this helps.

I am using it in our summer kitchen and do not have it hooked to a TV. It works and sounds great for music.

Yes you can revert to the television audio without disconnecting anything. Just go to the menu options on the TV, select audio, then select "TV speakers" instead of "External Speakers." Doing that though might be more complicated that keeping the external speakers on all the time and learning how to operate both. If you really want simplicity, you might want to just stick with using the TV speakers all the time and sacrifice the enhanced sound quality of the sound bar system. Another option is to invest in an advanced remote control device that can be programmed to operate multiple devices (TV, external audio, cable box, dvd, etc.). I am sure the Crutchfield folks could give you some good ideas on remote controls and discuss their pros and cons.

Ron, I don't know why you would want to revert to anything. Read the instructions or call Sony regarding the "Repeat" functionality. When properly set up (was pretty easy for me) you use the TV / Cable company control to turn on / off the TV and the Sony at the same time and control volume no different than if you were using the TV sound. The "Repeat" function is great and one of the main reasons for buying the Sony CT660. You have one control and simple operation.

Yes. The sound bar and tv work independently from each other. The problem you, or her, will run into is that the sound bar and tv don't sync up. If you use the tv volume as loud as the sound bar volume, you get a very annoying echo. When I use the sound bar, I turn my tv volume down to a lower volume level. In reality, that is the purpose of the sound bar. I love the Sony HT-CT660. The sound is awesome and the wireless sub has alot of good bass. I use the fiber optic cable for the audio and it works great.

Yes. You simply turn the TV's speakers back on and the sound bar off to listen to the TV speakers. You don't have to disconnect anything and you do the reverse to revert back to the sound bar.

Hi Ron, My simple answer would be "only if you programmed a remote to work with her current system" - I would not recommend this particular system for your elderly Mother. This Sony HT-CT660 did not come with a remote control, programming the remote was not that simple. Also, the sub-woofer does not seem to consistently connect. The system sounds fantastic! once everything is programmed and connected. I hope that helped your decision making easier.
