The Sony HT-ST9 creates a wide soundfield with 10 speakers, including three supertweeters for crisp highs.
Let's acknowledge up front that the Sony HT-ST9 is an excellent sound bar for everyday music listening and movie watching. With advanced Dolby® and DTS® audio decoding, you'll hear and see all the detail your Blu-ray movies offer. If you're taking the next step into 4K video, never fear — the HT-ST9 is also HDCP 2.2 compatible for connecting to a 4K video source. There are three HDMI inputs available, so you can connect your cable box, Blu-ray player, and gaming system via HDMI to the sound bar, then run a single cable to your TV, for a clean setup.
The HT-ST9 is jam-packed with speakers, each doing its part to create a wide soundfield with plenty of depth and clarity. The system features 10 speakers driven by 7 discrete digital amplifiers, including three supertweeters that reproduce subtle details in music and movie soundtracks. The 200-watt wireless subwoofer adds some punch to the low end.
Built-in Bluetooth with NFC makes it easy to get the music started with your smartphone, tablet, or laptop. Pair your device with the HT-ST9 for wireless playback with tunes stored on your device or streamed from your favorite music service. Download Sony's SongPal app and use your smartphone as a Bluetooth remote to control the sound bar.
Connect with a pair of compatible Sony wireless headphones so you can keep watching after everyone else has gone to bed.
The Google Cast music feature lets you stream music from any Cast-enabled app on a compatible phone or tablet directly from the cloud to the HT-ST9 for better audio quality. One touch sends the app of your choice to the receiver and lets you use the controls within the app to browse, play, pause, skip tracks and control volume. The list of Cast-enabled apps is growing, and already includes some of the most popular music apps like Pandora®, Google Play Music, and iHeart Radio®.
Once you've connected your favorite app, you can stream music directly from the sound bar to a pair of compatible Sony wireless headphones. Perfect for those times when you need to keep the noise down while gaming, watching TV or listening to music.
With so much functionality, it's nice that Sony provides you the option to optimize this system's sound for various applications. Seven listening modes offer sound tailored for music, movies, sports, video games, and even music from portable devices. Having trouble with dialogue? The "voice" feature enhances dialogue clarity by making it stand out in the mix. You can also tweak the bass response of the subwoofer to dial in explosive sound effects, or tame the volume for late night viewing. Best of all, all these tweaks are easily made with the included remote.

Average Customer Review(s):
Clear sound, powerful subwoofer, very easy to setup with Sony tv
I've really enjoyed the sound quality and the ease of pairing. But it hasn't been easiest to use. Been a real learning curve. Did have one crazy loud BEEP that mysteriously happened during a movie. Too, Sony could have coordinated their own products to have power and HDMI on the same side. Instead, it's complete opposite of the 65XBR900E. Also, not the easiest to mount on the wall. I made my own brackets and set it on those. That is something that SONY could improve on with this item. Love the sound fields and control of Sub. I'd still buy it again (at the discounted price only).
Pros: Sound is full
Cons: Wall installation
Perfect Sound and Price at this point, a $750 7.1-Channel Sound Bar. The Only Difference with SONY'S new HT-ST5000 is the lack of DOLBY ATMOS feature for $750 Less. Some may be concerned that this HT-ST9, even though is 4K-compatible, does not pass through HDR Contents of the Video parts. If concerned about this, then you can connect your Video Source (Bluray player) to your 4K HDR TV directly, then connect between the TV and HT-ST9 Sound bar using the ARC HDMI Line (TV--IN and HT-ST9--OUT).
Pros: Half-the-Price of the New HT-ST5000, with everything the same except missing the Dolby Atmos.
Cons: Only missing Dolby ATOMOS, but not really a Cons considering a Great Price Deal at this point.
Great sound bar. Will not be disappointed
I bought this item because our previous Samsung entry level soundbar simply wasn't giving us the voice clarity that we needed for watching television shows and movies. We love the voice clarity that we are now hearing and the 4k decoding engine that is built in to the sound bar has also improved our video from the UHDTV that we own. The installation was pretty straightforward. It was just a bit tricky because our TV runs through a OneConnect box, but I called Crutchfield support and they helped me figure that out. Sometimes the unti takes a minute to figure out where the signal is coming from but after 30 seconds or so, it has sorted it out and we are getting the level of performance we want. All in all, we are very happy and as a bonus, while I wasn't sure that the unit would allow for control by our cable box remote, it synced right up and we are able to run everything through the one remote. Nice!
Pros: Relatively easy set up. Good voice resolution, improved video
Cons: Takes a minute to find the right signal input when first turned on.
everything I wanted on a sound bar (sony) love it.
Pros: great sound good looks
Cons: some times it doesn`t come on with the tv, so it needs tio be done manually
Excellent Sound for a large Room. Has ability for rear speakers as well but both Sony technicians, Crutchfield, and Local retailer agree that they have marginal benefit. The Sound is excellent but the price is extremely high if you don't buy it on sale ( This is why a rated it a 4)
Did not meet our expectations. Very tinny sounding and horrible background sound. Tried all adjustments and finally ended up returning it. Crutchfield was great and took it right back and made recommendations for replacement. I summarize it by saying watching a football game was torture. That was the end of it.
Pros: Works well with my Sony TV. IR repeaters in back of sound bar allow remote control to work on TV even if the sound bar is blocking it.
Cons: Horrible sound
Great out of the box experience. Paired with Sony XBR-65X930D using HDMI ARC. Plug and play. Integrates nicely with TV. Good selection of audio options. Use for TV viewing and movie surround. I have a tough room for sound; open great room, high ceiling, hardwood floors, TV in the corner, poor design for center, front and rear speaker placement. Replaced surround stereo/speakers setup, which did not work as well for the space. This delivers. Clear dialogue, movie effects and bass. Sounds better, looks better.
Great soundbar at a great price (black Friday sale). works seamlessly with the sony tv . produces great sound and bass. there are different listening modes as well.
Pros: Strong bass, easy connection, crisp sound, serious a/v equipment
Cons: doesn't upscale to 4k, have to raise tv or mount
Crisp and clean. Just like being there.
awesome soundbar. really clear voice. easy to use.
Pros: excellent audio
Cons: physically larger than it looks in picture. barely fits in my tv area and had to raise tv
This was a Crutchfield purchase. The 60 day return was a big incentive. At first I was disappointed, for $1500 I was not impressed. This is a new product and you won't find discounts for at least a year. Primarily used for Verizon Fios Movie / Music channels. Sound stage and bass were lacking. Sounded like a $500 Vizio sound bar, I almost sent it back. When connected to a DVD player it completely changed. The sound stage opened up completely filling the room, the bass was now powerful and well integrated. What a difference. The movie came to life with full sound like you were in the theater. It gave the sound impression that multiple speakers were in the room. The volume can be turned up very loud (not recommended) with no distortion. Lesser sound bars would fail miserably at this. This is a true audiophile sound bar that when connected to the right source is truly rewarding to listen to. I didn't send it back.
Pros: Easy setup, full function with FIOS remote, great build quality, probably the best sound bar for the money
Cons: Expensive, other sound bars come close for much less money, currently only sold for full retail price.
Because flat screen TVs are reputed to have poor audio, I decided to by the Sony Sound Bar. It is Very expensive and is not much better than my old TV Rear Projection TV audio. Wish I had not bought it. UPDATED 9/16/15: I entered my initial evaluation when I had not tested all of the Sony Sound Bar features. I have now done so. I expected to get much greater dialogue clarity and better volume control. I got neither, even though there are numerous voice control options. The music fidelity is better than the television system, but I don't often use that. The sound bar does pair seamlessly with the Sony TV. The product is overpriced for what it delivers. I give it a 2 based on performance for the price.
Pros: Easy to set up and operate.
Cons: Disappointing audio for the price.
Great product overall. I replaced my Sony home theater system with this soundbar and I couldn't be happier with the quality of the system and the sound quality. The subwoofer has deep bass and actually shakes the pictures on my wall. Music sounds great and the subwoofer control makes it easy to change the bass if you want less. I only have one issue that I hope will be resolved in an update. Using the HDMI wake function with my PS4 cashes the system to go to the home screen. I then have to find the remote to put the system back on HDMI. I wish it would just stay on the input that woke it up. My kids watch streaming video and this has added a few steps for them as well.
Pros: Great sound. Less wires and speakers.
Cons: Not a true surround system. HDMI wake function needs a software update.
I replaced a yamaha ysp-4300 and am pretty pleased overall. It doesn't have the surround projection that the yamaha has, but dialogue and overall sound is much better. No issues hearing dialogue on tv or movies where the yamaha would require switching to stereo. Hdmi switching works pretty well and quickly and no issues with my 4k tv. Remote is just ok and input switching can be a little clunky using it. Pretty minor issue. It's expensive, but I don't have any regrets at this point.
Pros: Hdmi switching, nice volume level, clear dialogue, good looks, smaller footprint than my prior soundbar.
Cons: Remote is meh.

Soundbar Speaker System: The Sony HT-ST9 High-Definition Soundbar Speaker System is a two-piece surround sound system that brings simplicity and performance together by pairing a self-amplified soundbar speaker and a wireless powered subwoofer to create and exceptional audio experience marked by rich, natural, clear sound that complements your high-definition or ultra high-definition flat-panel TV's incredible picture. The HT-ST9's soundbar system will make any music or movie soundtrack come to life.
Magnetic Fluid Speaker Technology: The Sony HT-ST9 employs Magnetic Fluid Speaker technology. In conventional speakers, dampers provide suspension and stability for voice coils, which unfortunately create unwanted noise and distortion. By eliminating speaker dampers and replacing them with magnetic fluid speaker technology, energy efficiency is dramatically improved, and mid and high ranges are extended in incredible detail and clarity. With Magnetic Fluid Speaker technology, the HT-ST9 allows a more accurate revealing sound, in addition to cranking out 1.6x the volume of a conventional speaker.
S-Master Digital Amplifiers: Both the active soundbar speaker and wireless powered subwoofer employ Sony's S-Master Digital Amplifiers. Using a simplified, full digital signal path, the S-Master amplifier reproduces digital audio signals without the multiple analog stages required by conventional amplifiers. The result is not just more power, but significantly less distortion caused by heat build-up.
S-Force Pro Front Surround: The HT-ST9 utilizes S-Force Pro Front Surround to deliver virtual surround sound from a two-piece home theater speaker system. S-Force PRO Front Surround mimics the way the brain correlates sound sources to create proper volume, time lag, and sound wave spectrum - using only left and right speaker channels. By naturally emulating three-dimensional sound fields, you'll be able to enjoy rich, high-fidelity audio across a wider listening area.
Digital Surround Formats: The HT-ST9 supports the following digital audio formats.
Note: Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution, and LPCM 7ch is only supported via HDMI.
Audio Settings: The HT-ST9 offers preset soundfields, dialog enhancement, a night mode, an audio upscaler for compressed music files, and dynamic range compression to add to your listening enjoyment.
ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to the HT-ST9 system through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.
Note: Because with most televisions, the ARC-enabled HDMI input will only pass 2ch PCM from devices connected to the TV via HDMI or analog, we recommend that you connect your Blu-ray/DVD player, Satellite/Cable box, or Gaming console to the Sony HT-ST9 directly; and then connect the HT-ST9's ARC-enabled HDMI output to your TV's ARC-enabled HDMI input. This setup will give you with the best overall sound performance.
Digital + Analog Audio Inputs: The Sony HT-ST9 soundbar system features both analog (minijack) audio and digital (optical) audio inputs for connecting external audio sources such as your DVD player and CD player that do not offer HDMI connectivity. There is single minijack (3.5mm) analog audio input and one optical (toslink) digital audio input. The optical digital input supports Dolby Digital, DTS, and 2ch PCM audio signals.
Note: The digital optical output terminals of most newer flat-panel TVs only send an audio signal in 5.1ch when receiving Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound from the TV's built-in tuner, network connection, or connected USB device; and will output only 2ch stereo from sources connected to the TV via HDMI, or RCA (like your Blue-ray/DVD player or satellite/cable box).
HDMI 2.0: The Sony HT-ST9 features three HDMI 2.0 inputs and one HDMI 2.0 output which supports 4K pass-through, 1080/24p video, x.v.Color, Deep Color, and 3D; as well as ARC and standby pass-through. The system can detect and receive the best possible video and audio signals from all connected devices via HDMI, making connection and performance as simple as plugging in a single wire. Sony's HDMI Active Intelligence, transmits both audio and video signals through one HDMI cable. The system's HDMI jacks support 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, and 4K.
24p Output: The 24p Output settings allows you to watch movies at their native frame rate 24p format (24 frames per second) when paired with a 24p playback device like a Blu-ray Disc Player.
3D-Ready: The Sony HT-ST9 is compatible with 3D-ready Blu-ray disc movies, video games and other 3D content through its HDMI connection. 3D viewing requires 3D-ready source with 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D glasses, and high-speed HDMI cable. Other 3D accessories may also be required.
Color Technologies: The Sony HT-ST9 incorporates Triluminos Color, Deep Color, and x.v.Color technologies for perfect color and smooth gradation.
A/V Sync: The audio output can be delayed so that the time gap between the audio output and the visual display is minimized. This is especially helpful when you are using a large LCD or plasma TV or a projection TV. When activated, the delay can be adjusted from 0-300 ms or set to Auto.
Standby Pass-Through: You can conveniently access all your HDMI connected devices without having to power on the HT-ST9 system.
Wired or Wireless Network Connection: The Sony HT-ST9 features a rear-panel Ethernet (RJ-45) port and built-in WiFi that allow you to connect the system to your home network via a hardwired or wireless connection. By connecting the soundbar speaker system to your home network you are able to stream select online music services from Google Cast and audio files stored on your window-based PC to your home audio system. The following system environment is required to use the network function of this system.

Chromecast Built-in certified apps include Google Play Music, TuneIn, Pandora, iHeart Radio, and more (click here for a complete list of compatible apps). Chromecast Built-in streams your music directly from the cloud instead of from your phone, so you won't lose any sound quality. Additional Chromecast Built-in features include:
Miracast Technology: Miracast is a "screen mirroring" function which lets you wirelessly send the display from your compatible Windows 8.1+ or Android 4.2+ device (with support for Miracast) through the soundbar system to your TV. This allows you to view pictures and videos that are playing on your compatible Windows or Android device on your TV screen. No wireless router or access point required.
SongPal Link Multiroom Audio: The Sony HT-ST9 soundbar & sub speaker system supports Sony's SongPal Link multiroom audio feature. With SongPal Link, a feature of Sony's SongPal app for Apple iOS & Android, you can link multiple Sony SongPal Link compatible devices (sold separately) together to create zones, allowing you to stream the same music source or different music sources to all your SongPal Link compatible speakers or groups of speakers. Compatible sources include the soundbar speaker's HDMI, Optical, and Analog inputs, DLNA computers and servers, plus select online music services within SongPal.
Note: For the best multiroom experience, Sony recommends configuring your wireless band router to a 5Ghz wireless band.
DLNA Certified: The Sony HT-ST9 isDLNA certified. By connecting the HT-ST9 to your home network, you can listen to music stored on your Windows PC (w/ Windows Media Player 11 or 12) or a DLNA (ver.1.5) compatible media server. This eliminates the need to copy your and music files to a separate USB storage device.
Side-Panel USB Port: The Sound soundbar speaker system is equipped with a side-panel USB (type-A) port that allows you to enjoy music files stored on a USB mass storage class memory device; such as your Android smartphone (Froyo/Gingerbread OS only), Sony Walkman, or USB thumbdrive. The system can recognize up to 500 folders and 500 files in each folder. You can use the system's on-screen menu (via HDMI) and remote control to navigate your stored music files on your connected USB memory device. USB portable audio devices that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the soundbar speaker system's USB port (5V/1A); even in standby mode.
Compatible Music Files: The Sony HT-ST9 soundbar speaker system supports the following compressed, uncompressed, and high resolution music files via USB and DLNA.
Built-in Bluetooth: The Sony HT-ST9 soundbar speaker system features built-in Bluetooth (version 3.) for wireless audio streaming and control. The system can act as a Bluetooth receiver in order to wirelessly stream music from an audio device, or a Bluetooth transmitter in order to wirelessly stream music to a set of BT-enabled headphones.
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Sony system.
SongPal Remote App: By downloading Sony's free SongPal remote app (from Apple's App Store or Google Play), you can use your Apple iOS (6.0+) or Android (2.3+) device to control the HT-ST9 system via WiFi. From the SongPal remote app, you can select input sources, switch to other entertainment apps, and customize sound settings of the soundbar speaker system. You'll need to exit this app to stream & control stored music or music apps on your Bluetooth-connected phone.
IR Remote + HDMI Control: The HT-ST9 comes supplied with a full-function IR remote control for wireless operation of the system and HDMI-CEC device. HDMI Control allows you to easily manage and operate an HDMI Control compatible television and other audio/video components with a single remote, when all components are connected via HDMI. By connecting HDMI-CEC components operation is simplified in the following ways -
Note: With many other soundbar systems, placing the soundbar speaker on your TV stand can be problematic and block the TV's remote control sensor, forcing you to stand up and angle your remote to control your TV. The HT-ST9 soundbar speaker's features an IR repeater pass-through which allows your TV remote control commands to pass-through the front of the soundbar to the TV behind it, eliminating this problem.
On-Screen Display: The HT-ST9 provides an on-screen display through its HDMI output for setup, operation, and song/artist information.
Auto Standby: The soundbar speaker system entering standby mode automatically when you do no operate the system for approximately 20 minutes and the system is not receiving an input signal.
