Sony a99 II

The Sony a99 II's redesigned image stabilization system allows for a more compact body. (Lens not included.)

The a99 II's highly responsive Fast Hybrid autofocus system delivers clear action shots with spot-on subject tracking that keeps moving targets sharply focused throughout the frame.

Advanced features for videographers

The a99 II records video in Full HD and 4K. In Super 35mm format, data is processed from every pixel for sharp, finely detailed footage. A multi interface shoe lets you connect professional microphone kits for balanced audio to match the video quality. Picture Profile and S-Log 2 and S-Log 3 Gamma settings let you adjust color, gradation, and dynamic range for richly detailed movies, even in low light. A clean HDMI output sends uncompressed movie data to an external recorder or monitor. You can keep recording internally to the camera even when using this function.

A steady shooter

At such high levels of definition and detail, even small amounts of camera shake can be visible in your videos or cause blurring in still images. That's why Sony equipped the a99 II with five-axis image stabilization, which delivers tack-sharp photos and shake-free videos. Optimized for high-resolution sensors, this powerful image stabilization system compensates for camera shake from five different directions, giving you freedom to shoot handheld, zoom in on distant subjects, and capture sharp images in low light. You can monitor the effects of camera shake compensation in the electronic viewfinder or LCD screen while shooting and adjust framing and focusing if needed for steady results.

Your phone adds functionality

Built-in Wi-Fi means you can instantly transfer photos and videos from the a99 II directly to your phone or tablet for easy uploading and sharing. NFC touch pairing is also available for compatible Android™ devices. Sony's PlayMemories Camera Apps include free and paid apps that complement your photographic style and interests. There's the indispensable free Smart Remote Control app that lets you use your mobile device to control shooting on the a99 II, along with specialized apps for things like light painting, time-lapse, stop motion, and multiple exposure, plus plenty of editing effects to fine-tune your photos and add your own personal touches.

Love the camera so far but it was it's quirks. Works well with older minolta lenses. Older flashes are a different story though.

A pleasure to use. Grip feels great in the hand. Fast operation. Working great with all my old Minolta glass. Amazingly fast focus with my 80-200 f/2.8.

Great camera from the open box department

I really have only successfully used the camera once, hence the low rating. My initial trial used my Go-To Tamron Zoom lens. This lens had a mismatch with the A99ii and I was tempted to return it. However, the Crutchfield camera tech support suggested that it may be a lens issue even though that same lens works well with my Sony A68. Today, I tried the other lenes I own, and the camera works well. I really don't have a lot of time with this camera yet, but to verify the A99ii, I compared the good lenses with the same shot between the A99ii and the A68. As expected, the A99ii delivered superior images!

Pros: Full-frame Sensor. Wide lens support for Sony Alpha

Cons: While my other Tamron lenses work great with this camera, my telephoto zoom does not.

Alpha mount lovers rejoice, this is the camera you've been waiting for

This is the fifth Sony camera I've owned, I started with the A700, then when the mirrorless were announced, I jumped to the A7. However, the E-mount wasn't as good for sports and I needed to shoot indoors, so I went back to the A mount and A77II which my wife now uses as her go-to camera. I'm more of a landscape and nature type of person, when the A99II was announced, followed by the A9 announcement, I had the desire to move to another camera. I did debate between the A9 and the A99II. But I couldn't pass up the 42 MP sensor with 14-bit raw images. Plus for me at least, I had a nice collection of A-mount lens and since I had been careful about buying full-frame lenses, I could use any of them without the penalty of having the sensor crop the images by using non-full-frame lenses. This is not a light camera, the A700 was fairly light, and while the A77II was heavier, this A99II is by far the heaviest camera I've ever owned. But that's not the full story. It handles well. The grip really allows you grab ahold of the camera, there certainly isn't the fear of dropping it. And after a while, you don't notice the weight (OK, you do, but it feels comfortable in your hand, so you don't mind... especially when you see the end results). I'm spoiled with one foot in the E-mount camp and one foot in the A-mount camp, but if I had to pick just one camera, this would be it. It handles landscapes exceptionally well, and is fast enough to capture those sporting moments, even

Pros: High ISO rate without affecting image quality Great Ergonomics Dual card slots Large buffer 42 MP Option to turn off compression on RAW All the latest options from the A7 series in an Alpha mount camera

Cons: Joystick works differently than previous models (takes a while to get used to it) Heavy Large file sizes (but you do get awesome images) Limited Full Frame Lens choices from Sony Third-Party lens choices for Alpha mount better in some cases, but still limited.

Great Camera

Carlos from Rockwall, TX on 3/8/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great Camera! The more I use it the more I learn and am impressed with the quality of the pictures it takes. Took a picture of starts one night, hand-held and the picture came out very clear. I started out with a Sony A77V and am able to use all the accessories that I had with it on the A99 II including an old Minolta lens I had from my Navy days 20+ years ago. Be prepared to purchase extra hard disk storage. Each uncompressed RAW file is roughly 83MB in size, but there is lots of detail in those files.

Pros: It can automatically sense the type of lens from a full frame A-Mount to a DT crop sensor A-mount. Dual memory card slots.

Cons: Lack of full frame Sony A-mount lens choices. Resolution drops from 42MP to 18MP when using a crop sensor lens.
