A dreamy medium-telephoto prime lens for Sony cameras

This ultra-sharp lens has a 135mm focal length that's popular with photojournalists and portrait photographers. It's also a great length for landscapes, close-ups, and candid street scenes. With APS-C format Sony cameras, the lens has an equivalent focal length of 200mm — a handy telephoto length for wildlife, concert, and sports photography.

The large f/1.8 maximum aperture means you won't have to sweat it if the lights are low and you don't have a tripod. Plus, you can take razor-sharp portraits with smoothly defocused backgrounds. Two extra-low dispersion glass elements give this lens high resolving power and great contrast even at wider apertures. It can focus as close as 2.36 feet, so you can capture details and small subjects with excellent clarity.

¡¡¡Awesome Lens!!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome lens!!! It does take a little getting used to in that you have to stand a little further back from you subject to obtain the same composure as an 85 mm or 50 mm lens. The clarity is outstanding and this is sure to be my new favorite lens. When I received the lens, I tested it by photographing a subject with the aperture fully opened and then at it's smallest aperture. I wanted to see what speeds the camera would do for each aperture. I was pleased with the results and range. Outside, I was getting 1/5000 sec at f1.8 and 1/160 sec at f22. all this would definitely freeze action. I shoot with a Sony A99m2 which I also purchased through Crutchfield. I am extremely pleased with this camera and it along with the Sony T*135 mm have brought my game up quite a bit. This lens is great for portrait photography. If you have a Sony A99m2, you can manually switch the camera to crop sensor mode. This lens will then go from being a 135 mm f1.8 lens to a 202 mm f1.8 lens. Thus, this will be even better low light capability at 202 mm than a 70-200 mm f 2.8 lens. You may ask why would someone do this. I have a son and his band concerts are done in low light. I have used my Sony 70-200 mm f2.8 lens to shot the concerts from the back and have had good results. I anticipate that with the Sony 135 mm f1.8, I will be able to get the 202 mm f1.8 clarity in the concert, which will mean I can use higher shutter speeds and not get blurred action from kids moving around the low stage lightin

Pros: Too many to state along with awesome clarity, quality build, outstanding Bokeh

Cons: Heavy - not necessarily a con, but you will definitely get a workout from carrying this solid lens.

Features

Overview: The Sony SAL135F18Z (135mm F1.8 ZA) is a superior-quality, α (alpha) series, medium telephoto prime lens. This Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* (T-star) lens has a relatively large maximum aperture (F1.8) for a 135mm lens, enabling you to achieve excellent low light performance, faster shutter speeds for shooting action indoors, and controlling background defocusing. The lens comes with a lens hood and vinyl lens pouch.

Compatibility: The SAL135F18Z lens is equipped with a Sony A-mount, and is designed for use with Sony α (alpha) 35mm Full Frame A-mount cameras. It can be mounted onto A-mount cameras with APS-C sensors but with a 1.5x conversion factor. The equivalent focal length on an APS-C camera is 202.5mm. The lens can also be used on E-mount interchangeable lens cameras, when used with the LA-EA4 mount adapter.

Focus Hold Button: Pressing the Focus Hold button turns off the Auto Focus and "fix" the focus at its present position. You can release the shutter on the fixed focus. Releasing the Focus Hold button while pressing the shutter button halfway starts the AF again.

Lens Hood: The lens includes the ALC-SH0003 bayonet-mount round lens hood to reduce flare and ensure maximum image quality. When mounted, the lens hood adds approximately 3" to the overall length of the lens. When not in use, the lens hood can be inverted and stored on the lens backwards.
