Overview

Our take on the Sony MEX-N5000BT

Sony's understands that your smartphone is a big part of your life, so the MEX-N5000BT CD receiver offers plenty of ways to use it with in your car audio system. Sony's App Remote feature lets you take charge of selecting sources, picking radio stations, and launching apps from your phone's touchscreen, while on the other side you can select apps using the stereo's source button, the same way you'd choose the CD player or radio as your source. Best of all, App Remote lets your phone work as a display for the receiver, so you can see album art, track info, caller information, and more on your phone, rather than reading it off the receiver's single line display.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

There is no dedicated power button, so you cannot instantly turn it off. You have to press and hold the SRC button for a few seconds. That's annoying. What is worse, the thing just quit working when it was only fifteen months old.

Pros: Decent sound, USB stick, Bluetooth works with Android phone,

Cons: Broke fast (for a stereo) No dedicated Power button

Tiny buttons, and when I connect the output from my iphone to the AUX it will not amplify very well. You're not even to "loud" and it distorts a lot from the iphone max output.

    Good radio

Tom from Long Island, NY on 5/11/2015

This was a replacement for the factory radio for my Ford Expedition. I can say the radio works great, sound is great and was super easy to install. I recently added an external siriusxm tuner so I would use less data on my phone by not streaming audio from phone all the time. The USB port is difficult to get the hang of scrolling through looking for songs, but it is possible. The receiver works great but in my opinion the display leaves a lot to be desired and because of that I am looking to replace this receiver. I Hate the way the display limits the information. You can get one thing to display or another, but not everything.

Pros: Sound is good, love the Bluetooth for streaming audio and talking on phone, I am told the sound is very clear on the other end. The front USB port is convenient if not easy to use (see cons). Added a sirusxm tuner and worked instantly.

Cons: When listening to a radio station you can get the broadcast song info, or the preset number and clock - you cannot get the clock if you get broadcast info (song name etc) With siriusxm tuner you can get channel number or name or artist or song name or time, you cannot get it to scroll or alternate. Same with Bluetooth - display that say BTAudio & Time or artist or song With USB you can get folder number or song name or artist or time The display should offer an option to cycle through info

Just what I wanted and expected.

I have 2 of this model and one of another older model. I bought it for the bluetooth and Iphone connectivity. Works flawlessly. I have music and recorded sermons etc on USB sticks which is another awesome feature on these newer radios. Made the old speakers sound great and the cost of these makes it a no brainer to add these features to an old car that has non of these hands free features.

    Pros: cost... feature set.

Cons: I am not as savvy as younger folks will be with these new features so I find myself having to consult the book if I need to change something in the config. My son can just figure it out from the menus on the face plate.

Not enamored with the sound or ease of programming it to sound to my liking.

    Pros: CD, Bluetooth, Aux, volume

Cons: USB port doesn't charge your phone, and isn't compatible with android. Works excellent with Apple products, unfortunately, I'm an android guy. The clarity in sounds at top volume level leaves a bit to be desired. It probably could sound better if a pro installs and adjusts the settings. Didn't work out too well when I tried.

Noticeable improvement in sound quality, despite the fact that I have yet to replace the 16 year old factory speakers in my 99 Chevy Malibu. Menus are a little difficult to get a handle on at first, like some others have said. After flipping through the menu and learning as I went, it became easier. Bluetooth calls sound good as well. No issues there. Good stereo for the price, so far so good and I'm happy with it.

Pros: Sounds quality (despite the factory speakers still being in my car) 10 band EQ, variable color display, power output, Sub Preamp Outputs Bang for buck value. I feel like this stereo has everything.

Cons: Menus are difficult to navigate at first.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crutchfield swapped this radio with the Clarion model which in my opinion is so much better. This model is so hard to set the settings, even with the manual. It doesn't auto connect with my devices even though the setting is enabled. The colors are vague, and the mic is so big. The Clarion has a built in mic, multiple colors, is a lot easier to use (may still need instructions) usb is in the rear (more professional cleaner look this way if you want to charge your devices from the A-Piller and mount them there so they are out of your field of vision if under your rear view mirror), Aux port is still there for friends who have older phones, and you can thumb up and down, pause, play, and skip all from the Clarion receiver. This model doesn't do any of that.

Pros: Good sound quality Descent for the price if you use Aux or USB

Cons: Bluetooth is poor always disconnects and you have to manually pair it each time on the iPhone Not many color variations Large Bluetooth mic, noticeable everywhere Settings are hard to access

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an excellent receiver. Plus the Crutchfield team also gives you everything you need for a smooth trouble free installation. Still have trouble? They are a phone call away. It didn't take me long to set it up. A quick read of the instructions and anyone should be able to master the controls. It has a rainbow of colors to choose from or let it scroll through, it looks great. I was considering buying an amp, but at 55W x4, this blows my doors off. Yes, I'm very happy with this system.

Pros: You buy the receiver. As long as you spend $100 or more on the receiver, Crutchfield will give you, for free, everything needed for the install, including step by step instructions with photos. Great sound! Great looks!

Cons: They didn't fly one of their guys out to my house to install this for me. Just kidding, I can't think of one single con for my install.

I love this deck. It has all the features that you could need in a deck at an affordable price. The BT calling and answering works great and setup was really easy. It is different from other decks that I've used so I had to learn how to do a couple things, but the manual is really good for it so it wasn't too difficult.

Pros: Integrated Bluetooth, Variety of modes with Aux, USB, and BT, great sound quality, and easy setup features to make it sound awesome

after my car was broken into and my radio was stolen, I didn't hesitate to come right back to crutchfield and pick up a new one. I love how they include everything you could need to properly install the radio in your vehicle and on top of it this radio is awesome and it has abutton that makes removing the faceplate very simple, which was definitely a factor in purchasing this one.i love how easy it is to match the color of the display to the color of the rest of my dash board too. If it gets stolen I would, without a doubt buy this one again.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Install went well. I recommend going slow in connecting the wires to make up the harness that connects your new receiver to the vehicle. Consider soldering the wires rather than relying on the mechanical connection inside a crimp cap. If there is a loose connection, your receiver will shut off unexpectedly. Finding the loose connection among 12 or so wires will take time. This was a good experience, better than the alternative of taking my vehicle to someone to charge much more to do the job.

Pros: I found a youtube video showing how to remove the OEM receiver from my vehicle. Once I was sure I could get the old receiver out, I was confident I could get the new one in.

Cons: the crimp caps were hard to find in the (rural) area where I live. Either enclose them with the installation kit, or provide instruction on ho to solder the wires, or another connector in lieu of the crimp cap.

Who listens to AM anymore, anyway?

Bill from Wayne, NJ on 3/29/2015

    2008 Ford Crown Victoria
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A lot of features in a well-priced unit. I put it in a 2008 Ford Crown Victoria. The two things I was really looking for were a Bluetooth connection for my iPhone, mostly for the handsfree phone, and also the front USB so I could charge the phone if needed without tying up a lighter/power port with extra gear. All that was good. The thing I took for granted was AM radio, which I put on when I start my commutes twice a day. I live about 18 miles from New York City and have never had a problem with AM reception. In fact, the AM on the Ford OEM radio I replaced was crystal clear. The AM on this radio is very poor -- unusable at the bottom of the dial -- until I get closer to the city. Even right near the source there is still pop and scratch in the AM reception. So I am investigating some sort of filter that I assume the Ford radio had and this one does not. Also, the manual is not the greatest. It seems model specific, but it lists steps and options that I don't have. You learn how to work this unit mostly from using it -- hopefully not when driving. Still trying to figure why the initial volume is always so loud by USB, but fairly low by Bluetooth -- using the exact same device and regardless of the volume level of the device (matters for Bluetooth only). I've also had similar Sony radios where the faceplates developed problems and had to be replaced, but I stuck with them anyway and, after two weeks, this one is still working normally. I

Pros: Lots of features. Fair price. The nearly infinite back-light color options are a neat touch. Front USB and aux jacks are a must-have.

Cons: Poor AM reception. Takes some time to figure out how to use features best.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great quality radio with lots of options for the price. Installation was made super easy thanks to Crutchfield's free installation kits!

Pros: I like the radio a lot so far. Bluetooth works great. Love the USB and aux ports. Buttons have a good firm feel not loose feeling. It has great Sound quality. Color changing is pretty cool. Good amount of RCA hookups in the back.

Cons: Was expecting a 10 band graphic equalizer or at least something on the screen, it's not (I should have read a little closer). You set the ranges in the menu system PITA. I'm not a big fan of the menu system. I tend to run into dead ends and can't get back where I started. Removing the face is not as smooth as it should be. It take three or four pushes of the button before it releases sometimes.

    Just what I expected.

The pro installer talked directly to Sony and Crutchfield. 1st radio would never go out of demo mode. Second one wouldn't operate at all, the third one worked great for months then started randomly changing FM, AM, and Sirius channels and modes. Removed remote batteries. No change. Tried everything when talking to Crutchfield and Sony. Videoed the grimlins at work on my I phone. Also, on USB the music changed to another tune whenever. Sounded great except for static on some Sirius radio channels. Apparently the rumors about Sony's quality decline are true. Never again!

I'm trying to like this stereo but: Whenever my kid connects her phone with the usb port mine loses its bluetooth connection, maybe if I read the instructions more I can solve this. The call button is so bright when dimmed at night the glare on the windshield is horrible. Scrolling through unused pandora etc with the tiny source button is a major pain while driving. The stereo has also frozen once requiring ignition off reset. If I were to do it again I would not buy this unit.

This radio is a great radio. It has many colors to choose from and the install was very simple. I did have to modify the inside of the dash a little to make room for an accessory I bought for it. Overall I really like this radio, but I had had issues with it not turning on. Crutchfield happily replaced the unit with a new one, but the second unit is having the same problems. I am not sure if it is luck that I got two defective units in a row or there is a flaw in the design of the radio. However, I hate the idea of getting a different radio due to this one looking like it was meant for my car, but I do not want to end up with a third unit with the same problem.

Pros: - Easy to install. - Many colors to choose from. - Looks great in my car.

Cons: - Two defective units in a row. - Microphone does not always pick up my voice.

I like the Xplod line but not this one.

I have 4 other Sony Xplod stereos. The oldest being 6 years ago the newest 2 years ago. I like all of them so I naturally bough another. Can't say that I am a fan of this one. My first annoyance was the insistent app reminder telling me to Open App. By default this is on and you have to figure out how to disable it if you don't want to use their incredibly bad remote app on your phone. They also have included satellite radio and Pandora as source options and you cannot disable them as you can the alt input. So out of the box it bothers you to get and use their app that I found no use for and does not allow you to turn off input options you don't use. The ipod interface works as well as it has in the previous models and the sound and power are both still very good. The option to set the color display to just about any color also works well. With all that in mind, I would recommend this model if I could get rid of the app reminder or if they would have made it opt in instead of on by default. They didn't so I don't. I will try to find an older one and see if any of this is fixed in upcoming models.

Pros: Sound, Power, Volume and Function Controls, Bluetooth Phone Connection and Use, External Microphone, Color Options for the Lighting

Cons: The App is useless and poorly done in my opinion. Sony decided to make the stereo demand that you open it every time your phone connects till you figure out how to turn off the annoying feature.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My Crutchfield sales lady recommended this unit over a Pioneer 7600. She told me it was the best when it came to bluetooth connectivity. Sadly, she was very wrong. The buttons to press to get anything connected is ridiculous. I had to go to troubleshooting to find out the extra step to pair my phone completely. It is very slow at connecting upon starting, and the sound quality is nothing compared to the pioneer. And you better not try pressing the radio button for voice control, that rarely works. Sorry, Crutchfield, you missed the mark on this one.

Pros: The red led almost matches my BMW colors.

Cons: Horrible bluetooth connection steps. Bad voice command or siri capability..

Take your time installing the unit, read and re-read the manual because it is definitely a well thought out unit with great features and a user interface that is easy to work with. The build quality is great and the functions are well thought out and user friendly.

I contacted two different Crutchfield support technicians telling them that I wanted a head unit that could be controlled 100% via Iphone5. They assured me that this unit is capable of that but they were both wrong. The head unit works fine from a sound standpoint but the Remote App made by Sony is woefully inadequate. The APP allows you to choose between youtube, spotify and a couple other websites (like IMDB which baffles me) but DOES NOT allow you to control volume, change the source to tuner/cd/aux/etc or any of the equalizer controls. If you purchase this head unit, plan on using it as a normal bluetooth receiver. DO NOT pay for the remote app function as it's worthless.

Ordering was a snap, instructions were great, and we were not only able to save over $200 by doing it ourself....it was a great project and learning experience for both my son and I. Even the steering wheel controls work and the sound quality of both the radio and hands free calling are excellent.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product is easy to install and instruction coupled with Crutchfield master sheets make the install simple. I gave the ease of use 4 stars due to a couple of minor issues. 1. access to the EQ without the app on the phone is cumbersome to access and change. 2. I use an android device and the speaking integration is not as simple as shown in the video. 3. When the app is paired, i can't use the keyboard on my Samsung Note 3. But in general, it is a quality sounding system and the bluetooth hands free works great. All in all a nice system. Using the app to control the device make use and configuration of the system much easier.

Pros: Nice sound Good hands free

Cons: Changing EQ settings without the app are cumbersome.

After reading several reviews of this other similarly priced products I opted for this one as it offered the best bang for the buck. I was very pleased at how easy the install was and I was fumbling through the limited user manual and the plethora of features offered by this unit. The other reviews were spot on as it offers great technology and features for a low price. The unit is quality and in keeping with Sony tradition, robust and reliable. For a self-proclaimed techie, I did have to revert to the user manual to decipher many of the cryptic display messages while moving through the set up menus. After a little bit though I was off and running making hands free phone calls, listening to music from my iPhone and wishing I had ordered the Sirius module. My '97 Ford still has factory original speakers so I can't comment on sound quality in all fairness.

Amazed at the sound quality compared to my 1 year old JVC digital media receiver. Provides me with USB, CD, AUX, and bluetooth. I don't really care about the CD so much, as I don't use them anymore. It took a little while to figure out how to use the Android app on my phone to get it to play music, instead of it constantly giving me the option to make phone calls instead. I like the fact that pressing the volume button (while the phone is connected) brings up the voice controls on the phone. So I can swap between different inputs. Too bad it doesn't provide voice controls for pause, stop, next, play, etc.

Pros: Lots of inputs for audio, good sound quality.

Cons: Confusing menu system for setting up the stereo. Also Android app on phone is a little confusing too. Doesn't take a long time to figure out. Wish stereo manufacturers would up the amount of power these things put out. What's wrong with 100w per channel instead? That or just have no built-in amp, so the stereo can be more shallow and I can simply use my own amp.

I bought this radio along with Sirius satellite tuner and front and rear speakers for my daughter's car as a Christmas present; it came with all the necessary harnesses and wiring free which amazed me. She has a 1996 Honda Civic that still had the factory radio in it. The order came quickly from Crutchfield...I was super impressed. We installed it Christmas Day for her as she was extremely excited to have it. We used the Crutchfield instructions and 2 hours later she was hooked up and ready to go. The sound is amazingly clear and the amount of options you have with the radio from the colors to Bluetooth, a USB and Aux ports makes you feel like you have everything you need in terms of music. There's nothing you can't access with this radio and I'm one happy and satisfied Crutchfield customer. I'll definitely continue to shop here. Thank you Sony and more importantly thank you Crutchfield! My daughter is a happy camper!

Very great value. Very nice sound and lots of options to tweak the sound to your liking. a nice 10-band eq, rear bass enhancement, high pass filter, positioning adjustements and more. Awesome fully customizeable colors for day and night. Presets and full rgb style color picker. Simple menu systems. Grwat bluetooth support once you know how to use it. Read the manual a few times. I'm never impressed with the faceplate build quality nowadays. It's definitely standard quality like most decks. The jog wheel feels great, and the buttons are nice enough. But nothing feels hardcore durable. Then again most faceplates don't. Would definitely recommend this unit though and I would only buy it from crutchfield. Awesome service and support and great prices with all the model specific wires and harnesses you need!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I mainly use this Stereo with bluetooth streaming and the sound quality is excellent. I used the tuner for a bit and it works well and also sounds good. It has 3 preamp outputs, which is a really nice feature. I have 2 of them connected to an amp and I am really impressed with the sound quality. I haven't even messed with the EQ settings. The display dims when the headlights are on, which is a great feature, but it is a bit hard to see in bright daylight because of the sunlight reflecting off of it. It has a lot of different colors to choose from, which is a nice feature. It only has one line of text, which is kind of a bummer. The menus and controls are complicated. You HAVE to read the manual to figure out how to get it to do certain things. The menu button is shared with the display button and you hold it in to change the display. I finally figured out how to get it to display track info, but this feature does not work when using the AppRemote Android App. It also does not auto connect over bluetooth. You have to hold in the select button to get it to connect. I tried to use the Sony Smart Connect app to get my phone to automatically connect and play music on Spotify, but it does not seem to work. Once it connects, the only way I can find to get it to play music without touching the phone is to press the next button to skip to the next song and then it will start playing. Overall, I'm happy with it and am impressed with the sound quality.

    Pros: Great Sound

Cons: Confusing and complicated menus. One line display.

I picked this head unit with three things in mind: sound, hands free calling, and price. I have now had it installed for a couple months, and I am very happy with it. I replaced my base model am/fm unit with this and some new Kicker speakers, and it is like I'm driving a new truck! My sons and I go driving just to take turns teaching each other what "real" music is, because everything sounds better on this rig. I'm no audiophile, I just like to rock a little, and this fits the bill. The installation gear made it simple. It is solid, and it looks good in the truck. The handsfree calling is excellent. My truck isn't very soundproof, so there's lots of road noise, but I can hear very well, and those that I speak to say I come across nice and clear. It's a little tough for passengers to be heard though. One gripe I have is that the instructions are not detailed enough. I know there is more I can get out of this thing, and I'll get to work on that one day, but it would be nice to have some instruction from the manual. But, it's a great unit. You won't be disappointed.

Pros: Great sound, especially when you tune it yourself. And, the handsfree phone works very well.

Cons: Insufficient instructions from Sony. (The Crutchfield installation instructions were excellent)

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm still smiling after putting this into a 1994 Nissan maxima with the Bose system. Each of the challenges was surmounted by the homework the people at Crutchfield did. Double din taken care of with Metra kit, power antenna and independently amped speakers both powered by the single blue wire out of the receiver at the advice of a Crutchfield advisor (which totally worked, even though it contradicts the Scosche adapter suggestion not to do it...it doesn't work if you don't), non standard antenna interface adapter included free from Crutchfield, etc. The original Bose system (made by Clarion) lasted 10 years. I then had a refubed one installed for something like $500 about 10 years ago. This time, I did it myself and spent a fraction of that while adding huge amounts of functionality. All thanks to Crutchfield. The receiver is excellent and works perfectly as a retrofit. Colors are infinitely adjustable to match the other gauges on the car and the Bluetooth synched and works great. Call comes in, music goes off, name of caller on display. Call ends, music back on automatically. Only downside is the complexity of the sub menus. Lots and lots of tweaking available is the positive aspect, lack of simplicity is the negative. All in, extremely happy with the receiver and help/support from the people of Crutchfield. Highly recommend and almost sorry my stock radio didn't die sooner.

Pros: Crutchfield support is always amazing. As for the receiver, it is excellent value, seems well made and sounds very good. Bluetooth calls are so clean, no one has been able to tell I am in a car. Even though a $10 ATT Z222 go phone wasn't on the approved/supported list, the Sony easily synched to it's Bluetooth for handsfree, read the phone book off the phone and even did voice dial. Add USB, AUX and Radio Data system and this is a winner.

Cons: There are a lot of features and options. Almost, too many. While that is great for customization, it also adds complexity.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed the Sony MEX-N5000BT in a 1995 Volvo wagon when the factory CD player quit working. This was the second factory unit I had installed in the Volvo and I decided rather than take a chance on another used factory unit that probably wouldn't work any better, I would buy a new unit and as it turned out I'm glad I did get this Sony unit. The rep I talked to after looking at various choices on the website was very helpful and narrowing the selection down to this unit. It seemed to me like it had everything I needed at a price that I was prepared to pay and included the associated mounting pieces and wiring harness. I thought the rep had told me that I would not need to connect wires to make the unit work with the existing harness and connectors, but when I got the unit I could see that I was in for some wiring and my son who is an auto mechanic emphatically insisted you always had to do some wiring when installing an aftermarket audio system. I elected to solder these connections and shrink wrap them rather than use plastic connectors or crimp style connectors because I consider connections to be the worst enemy of electronics and the best way to do this with solder. I talked to a second rep who alerted me to 2 wiring color match ups anomalies that aren't mentioned in the insulation material. With that help I was able to connect up to harness and after that the insulation was straightforward and easy even for an 85-year-old.

Pros: Looks great, sounds infinitely better than what I had and has way more features than I'll ever use. That said, it seems to have all the features an audio nut would need in what looks like a well-designed product.

Cons: It'll be a while before I'll be able to master all the features having to do with the three main functions that I need; listening to a CD, listening to the radio and making hand free telephone calls.

I love this deck. I put it in my BMW 328i and it works fantastically. The Bluetooth phone functionality is superb. It doesn't matter if I am listening to my iPod on the sub port, using the Aux port or listening to a CD, as soon as the phone rings it jumps on the call and when I'm done goes right back to the music I was listening to. Sony's equalizer is good and I love the position function. Getting it from Crutchfield makes it so easy to install with the great instructions, the specific wire harness I needed and dashboard faceplate. A great bargin since the extras are free. I also bought an ASWC-1 harness so I could keep the steering wheel functions for the radio. Works like a charm. Next up are new speakers and I'll get those from Crutchfield too

I was looking for a receiver with good sound quality, good connectivity options, easy Bluetooth pairing for phone and music streaming, and that could pick up radio stations well. This receiver easily does all of that. The menu system can be a little overly complex at times and doesn't seem to provide all of the options that she wanted (e.g., ability to stream music but still use just the phone handset for phone calls), and the plastic of the unit can flex a little, but these are easy to overlook with the price. It's inexpensive and has excellent features for the price. We're very happy with it.

Pros: Good features and sound quality, easy to install and setup. Excellent value for the money.

Cons: Menus can still be a little overly complicated and buttons aren't straightforward. Plastic material flexes a little, but makes sense for the price.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First, I have to say thanks to "Buddy" - the Crutchfield rep who helped me with my purchase and convinced me to install it myself. I'd planned to pay a professional $100+ to install it. He convinced me that it was doable and he was right! I think it's a great radio for the price, the sound quality in my 2005 Corolla has definitely improved. It's clearer and cleaner. This is most noticeable on highway driving where the interior of the car can get pretty noisy. Initially all I wanted was to install an auxiliary port in my car so I could listen to my phone but this is so much better. After the first few times of having to manually pair my phone's Bluetooth to the cars, it's started doing it automatically. Aesthetically, it looks great and I love the myriad source options. I wish there was a better way to navigate to the various settings - I have not played around with many radios like this so I don't know if this is an anomaly, but you do have to dig far down into menus to get to certain settings and some of them have incomprehensible acronyms. I hope to never lose the guide, though things might improve after I get used to the radio. Though this isn't an indictment on the actual radio, the Android app is severely in need of an update. It does what it's supposed to do, however it prevents my phone's keyboard and certain other apps from working if it's on and connected to the radio, as a result I've uninstalled it and use just the Bluetooth function.

Pros: -Great sound -Great aesthetics -Easy install

Cons: -Menus are tedious to navigate. -Android app needs to be improved

    Looks great, works even better!

Pros: Ease of installation and easy to use on day to day basis. The built in blue tooth and remote microphone was a nice upgrade in a 15 year old car.

Cons: Constantly having to reconnect my smart phone via blue tooth. If it's supposed to automatically reconnect each time I drive the car I haven't figured that out yet.

This is an excellent priced receiver. All the parts were included to make the install very fast; less than 1 hour. Just need to get the wire crimp nut locally. One great thing is that the instructions state that you have to connect your iPhone to the USB to stream music; once my iPhone 5s synced, I was able to stream Pandora BT without using the USB connection. Also bass enhancement is top notch. Very happy with this unit.

This stereo is a good Sony product which is easy to install and has great sound and tuner. The Bluetooth functionality leaves a lot to be desired. You have to install the app then it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. It isn't intuitive to use. Answering calls is easy, and making them using voice dialing is convenient, but getting the Bluetooth to connect seems random.

Pros: Great sound and tuner. Answering calls is easy and voice dialing is easy, when it works. Installation was easy.

Cons: Bluetooth is difficult to set up and use. It is supposed to connect automatically, but doesn't. Some of the Bluetooth functions are difficult to access and use and only work sometimes.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This deck was not my first choice, and if money were no object I'd have spent $100 more and got 4V preouts, a better display, and more features. I wanted more precise control than my LC6i and factory deck were providing and Bluetooth connectivity, as the cheap aux-in jack on the factory radio was prone to static, very unpleasant when amplified with 800 watts. I think I made the right choice of what was available in my price range. I see complaints about the App Remote on Android, but it works fantastic for streaming Spotify Premium and adjusting the sound. I use an LG G3 Vigor, which the Sony recognizes by name, and find it to be a great fit. It connects automatically if my phone has Bluetooth turned on and controls track fwd/rwd functions either on my phone or the stereo, which allows me to change the song when my phone screen has timed out. Still not sold on the DSP features, but I really haven't tweaked my amps and fine tuned the parameters. The EQ is great, the subwoofer level works, but the sweep is not as smooth as the ACR-1 achieved through the LC6i. I am able to drive my RF P1s much harder than before due to the HPF and LPF that is built-in to this deck. Installation was easy, the hardest part was moving the RCAs from under my seat to behind the dash. I used the LC GMOS-03 adaptor and it worked flawlessly, even includes a speaker that replaces the factory chimes without going through amplification as with the LC6i.

Pros: Bluetooth streaming, App Remote features, Display colors/choices

Cons: None that weren't clearly listed in the specs.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the Sony MEX-N5000BT primarily because of its compatibility with Sony's smartphone apps that let you control the unit from your phone. My car's receiver location is very low and I have a smartphone mount on my dash - I figured the app would be easier to use than looking down at the unit itself. Unfortunately, Sony's Android App is really quite bad - so much so that I ended up deleting it. (The app automatically launches when you connect to the receiver, which is nice, but there is no option to disable that. That's a deal-killer as I sometimes want to use a different app for streaming) The receiver itself is good, though I still can't believe in 2014 that receivers are using similar displays to those used 20 years ago - why not a nice LED screen with clearer text? Sony isn't alone here, however. Last nitpick - the collar for some reason has metal clips that bend to the sides, rather than to the front/back. This makes securing it to the Metra plastic dash adapter difficult and not terribly secure. I can't imagine why they would do this. Perhaps I'm missing something. Other than those gripes, the unit sounds great, the bluetooth and NFC pairing work perfectly, and call quality with the microphone is excellent. Even at highway speeds, the mic picks up me saying "OK Google" to launch Google Now with no problem. I'm happy with the unit overall and would recommend it for the price - just keep in mind that the app is worthless.

Great value for all the features you get. Put this in a 01 Isuzu Rodeo so I didn't want to spend much money. Still trying to figure out all the functions with the remote app. App remote seems little gimmicky with Bluetooth capability. If you can operate hands free not sure why you would want to use your phone via USB as a remote plus the unit comes with a remote too. Some people complain about the app and getting their phone to work with the unit. I have an Iphone 5s using iOS 8 and everything worked right away with no issues. I have made a few calls hands free and I can hear and everyone and hear me perfectly. Very happy with my purchase. I think the value is great plus all the free stuff you get along with the order for installing yourself from Crutchfield makes it even better.

Pros: Lots for features for the money. Easy install.

Cons: When I start to turn the volume up a bit I can hear some very slight static/very slight distortion when listening to the tuner. CDs and streamed music are fine. Not totally sure to blame it on the head unit as I am still using speakers but since other inputs for audio are fine it makes me feel it's the antenna connection.

Very impressed just to get this 'replacement' stereo for my truck. I feel I got way more than is necessary. Love the BT features the best. Audio quality and power very adequate. Fairly simple to install. I do not need the satellite connection, so can't comment on that.

Pros: Crutchfield chat helped me buy all i needed in the install...saved the info until I was hope and shipped promptly. I say this because all what was needed was shipped and made it a fairly easy install (35 minutes---after I read the instructions.). I like the universality of DIN for the the install. Haven't put in stereo in a car for over 25 years...and now it they are even easier!

Cons: The install instructions was not perfect...skipped a few details that were needed to wiz through the install. Also, added instructions for things I did not need. Just had to work though it and hope it worked...and it did.

For a tweaker with a small budget, it's hard to beat this. Great sound, very good power. Bluetooth works well. A 10-band equalizer which is a biggie, time alignment, phase control, RBE (a method of turning crappy rear speakers into quasi-subwoofers), DSPs..., etc, etc. The variable color controls are cool, but I'd ditch that to be able to make the display brighter. Complaints are that the controls are quite difficult to master and the USB connection is too loose. If I hit a bump, it's as if I was playing off a CD... it skips and sometimes does not recover! This is a pretty big flaw. I found a quick fix for this, but it is not ideal. Long story short, you can't find a better feature set at the price as of 9/2014. I tried and failed. What you lose is some intuitiveness and some build quality.

Pros: Bang for your buck is phenomenal. Sound tweaks, clean power and overall feature set.

The stock radio in my 2004 Accord went kaput so off I went to Crutchfield. I wanted something with XM compatibility that would work with my iPhone 5s, and really didn't want to spend too much. I saw the Sony in a local electronics store and it seemed fairly easy to use. With the XM adapter and Accord dash kit (with harness), the order came in under $200. I called Crutchfield just to have them double check the order, and he recommended the plastic connectors (well worth the price), then took my CC and placed the order. A few days later, I received and installed everything. I haven't connected the phone yet but the tuner, CD player and XM work flawlessly. I just had to go to the XM web site, inactivate the old radio and activate the new one, and it was working within 5 minutes. The configuration and menus are quite intuitive and I'm getting used to how to get around the various XM stations. I miss the two-line display of my old XM radio and the 3x10 presets (now only 3x6). The sound quality is much better than the old FM-modulator type XM radio. Never need to change the frequency. The fit of the dash kit (the one that replaces the old compartment I never used anyway) is excellent. Because the radio is down a bit lower, the brightness is quite adequate, but the buttons are still easy to find and reach without looking. Can't wait to connect the phone and open the world of hands-free calls.

Pros: XM sounds much better Much more capability than the stock radio Easy to configure display, sound, etc. Easy to remove faceplate

Cons: Only single-line display for XM Only 3x6 presets for XM

To go from Audio Input back to Tuner you have go thru all 6 or 7 items, and to go from FM to AM, you have to scroll thru FM 1, 2, 3, AM !, 2. Whoever designed this has never driven a car, much less in Houston traffic. And all the buttons are tiny and crowded together on the left end. So...essentially I find the way these units connect, stay connected, generally behave, to be kind of erratic and inconsistent with iPhone, latest-greatest iOS, etc. There are just little quirky things about how they pair via Bluetooth, what one needs to do to sort of 'wake up' pairing, etc. This particular one is probably the weirdest of the three, though it utilizes a newer version of Bluetooth. I'd actually called Sony support after the unit just wouldn't re-pair by itself without my always going to the phone to make it happen. Basically had to unpaid and repair in a little different order, and it's been good since. Presently my two weird-ish issues (so far) are that when I plug USB in (to charge), it immediately switches over to running audio over USB (which is good), and Bluetooth phone continues to work (also good), but it slways auto-plays some audio. If the last thing I've played on my phone is Music, then it auto plays wherever i left off. Interestingly, if it's a podcast last played, it often starts a different podcast altogether. The other thing is that just today, I was using Bluetooth phone, another call came in, had to switch via phone, and then speakerphone was disabled. Finally, I miss on the old unit having a quick way to 'pause' audio.

Pros: Sounds good, lots of features for the money, quality of mic and speakerphone business is decent. I mean, overall, it's still really great, and really cheap. I hate to even ding it with 4 stars for the money, but still, I wish their testing and compatibility were overall just more thorough and bulletproof before going to market.

Cons: Quirky iPhone stuff as noted above...also, I really don't personally have any use for the iPhone app itself. I guess my expectations were too high; I kind of thought it would basically do everything the head's UI would do, but better, but that's not at all the case. A result of this is that now the head gives me an 'Open App' message (like, do this, dummy), which requires my doing a mode click to blow it off and reenable general controls. I'll also mentioned that the output to sub is pretty low.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For its price, this receiver is EXCELLENT. Bluetooth connects very well consistently, call quality with the included microphone has been great, and controls are relatively easy to use. Buttons are small, but that will be the case with any single-DIN receiver. Sometimes when I use the receiver to go through my phone's contact list it says "unsupported," but this is normally fixed by turning my Galaxy S5's bluetooth off and on again. The ability to look up contacts, make phone calls, turn on Pandora, and toggle between inputs using just the receiver controls is very smooth and convenient. The Sony "App Remote" is bulky, and I suggest not using it. The app automatically launches on your phone every time you connect via bluetooth, and it prevents you from using certain features of the stereo such as bluetooth pandora control. The text message readout also works inconsistently. It did seem to have some neat features like the ability to store preferences, but I ultimately removed the app. However, I purchased this stereo because it has the most features for the price. The sound is great, the preset and custom EQ's are awesome, and it even gives you custom color control. Of course, the install was very easy between the help from Crutchfield and the manufacturer's instructions. I would definitely buy this stereo again.

Pros: Great sound Easy to use Clear bluetooth Very customizable

Cons: Sony app remote is not worth the hassle

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace an OEM Monsoon radio/cassette player in a 2000 VW Golf. Installation was pretty straightforward (thanks for the necessary tools and instructions, Crutchfield!) and the device works well. Very good sound, lots of features, and they seem to work in sensible ways. For example, listening to music via the USB connection, if a phone call arrives it will hand off from the USB source to the Bluetooth source for the call, then go back to the USB source when the call is done. Nice to be able to set your own colors, and lots of other configurable features. The main things I'm not liking about it so far are that the buttons are tiny and hard to use without looking while you're driving, and that the ergonomics and user interface are not well designed. The volume knob and forward/back buttons are easy enough, but the power button (which is also the source selection button) is tiny and right next to the volume knob. The menu button is also the display button, and is also tiny. This sharing of features on small buttons is annoying - I want to power off, but end up changing source by accident. Or I want to have the display show the artist instead of the song title, or the clock, but end up in a configuration menu tree instead. Changing source requires me to hit the tiny power button multiple times (or hit it once and turn the volume knob), and then cycle through the umpteen sources, including ones that I'm not likely to ever use (i.e., Pandora USB, Pandora BT, etc.)

Pros: Good sound, looks nice, seems like a quality product that will last a long time. Bluetooth connection is quick and stable. Lots of good functionality.

Cons: Ergonomics and user interface are not efficient. Sony app supposedly could help with this, but it is not very good.

This stereo is a great replacement/upgrade for me. I had an older JVC CD player head unit that had the volume up button fail closed and the CD player eject stopped working (both things I fixed but it was time for an upgrade). This stereo really does all I want for a very reasonable price. The sound customization is awesome, even though I already had an aftermarket radio, this one makes the previous unit sound like a toy. The car I installed it in never had bluetooth/handsfree anything so that's also well worth the price. I may be upgrading my other car radio soon now... Since this is a single DIN stereo, I mounted the mic in the cubby in the adapter bracket.

Pros: Great sound quality/customization options. Bluetooth connects immediately. Good FM reception. RDS works great. Being able to color match the rest of my dash lights with the faceplate makes the unit look even better. Pandora integration works perfectly.

Cons: The sony app remote doesn't work very well for me; it isn't consistent at all and certain functions cause it to crash on my phone. I removed the app from my phone and now everything with the radio/phone connecting works great. Not quiteworth knocking of a star because of even though my phone is one Sony specifically lists as compatible. Folks on the other end of my phone calls have mentioned some noise but I think this is more due to my noisy old car than it is quality of the stereo/mic set

The CD and cassette players in our 2002 Nissan Pathfinder LE stopped working so I had no choice but to replace the HU. After renting a Ford Escape with Sony audio sound system, I was so impressed with the sound produced and ease of use, worked so well with the iPhone 5 and Siri, Bluetooth for audio streaming was flawless, connects as you get in the vehicle, so decided to go for this Sony MEX-N5000BT, not only for the prize but also because of the previous wonderful experience I had with the rental SUV. My decision was right. Now I could say, Siri is the best personal assistant you can have inside your car/SUV. It's totally handsfree, all you gotta do is ask Siri if you have and read a new e-mail or text messages and send (after dictating) your response, play your song collections or playlist, tune-in or change radio stations as what you have set-up in your iTunes radio, all with stunning sound. It really blended well with our Path's Bose speakers. One of the many great features that comes with this HU is the RB ENH( rear bass enhancer), it tremendously improved the bass reproduction, as if I have installed a subwoofer as well. You can tailor the way how you want to set-up your sound. The microphone works well when making calls, my family said they could hear me clear enough. One more thing that drove me to get this HU, is the prize, been consistent in Crutchfield and other retailers. to me it's a good sign that it's a good product. Thanks much Crutchfield support/help team.

Pros: Build quality and sound quality are excellent. Feature set is outstanding for the price.

Cons: The menus are not very intuitive. Some menu items use cryptic abbreviation, and studying the manual is necessary to preform some basic functions. There is no button on the face that cycles through the EQ presets - at least, none that I've found yet.

I purchased this Sony because it looked great and has NFC bluetooth capabilities. The unit will not return to music after I complete a phone call. It would not download the phonebook from my Motorola RAZR. Crutchfiled exchanged it for another N5000BT. It has the same problems. I bought two new Samsung cell phones, a Galaxy Light for me and a Galaxy Essentials for my wife. Both are NFC capable. However, neither will connect to the Sony with the NFC. Just get an error message saying the pairing failed. I have an Alpine CDE133BT in my van and every phone I've owned will readily connect and download my phonebooks, unlike the Sony. The Sony will pair manually but requires me to get my cellphone out and initiate the call from the phonebook on the cellphone. My other complaint is the difference in volume levels from one tune to the other on my USB drive. It runs from "the volume is just right" to " I need to turn it way up if I want to hear anything." Again, unlike the Alpine in my van. Looks like I will be sending this thing back to Crutchfield and getting an Alpine. The changeable colors on the display are nice, though.

    Pros: Changeable display colors.

Cons: Bluetooth for my Motorola Razr and Samsung Galaxy cellphones is almost worthless. The NFC doesn't work. Sound volume varies greatly from one tune to the other on USB.

I realize that for the price, this head unit should be judged as a budget-end product. That being said, it claims to support Bluetooth, NFC, and USB. My unit refuses to work with any of those reliably. I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 running KitKat. My Sony radio does not recognize NFC at all and when I plug in the USB it displays "not supported" even though there are a couple settings for USB connections and the USB port is prominently displayed. Bluetooth is especially frustrating, as it takes 5-10 minutes of actively pairing/unpairing/pairing and fiddling with settings to establish bluetooth connectivity. This is useless for me. When I get in my car, I want to go someplace. It would be nice to have a hands-free option that just worked. I'm not going to spend 5 to 10 minutes manually connecting my phone just so I can have hands-free calling or listen to Pandora or listen to podcasts or music stored on my phone. I regret removing my factory head unit, which at least had a persistent clock display separate from the radio display. Which brings up the other main point of frustration: the Sony's controls are insane. To get the clock to display (it doesn't by default) you have to find (small buttons) and hold the Menu button. Sometimes that takes you to a different layer of information and you have to press and hold a second time to finally get the clock to display. You have to do this EVERY time you start the car or switch between, say, tuner and BT audio.

    Pros: clock autosyncs

Cons: poor UI unreliable functions performs worse than the factory radio must take eyes off road to find and press teeny multifunction buttons to do basic things like switch from tuner to Pandora.

If a phone call is initiated using the button on the head unit while playing a Bluetooth (BT) audio source, it does not pause the audio playback and when the phone call is complete, it does not resume playing. You have to manually select the BT audio source and rewind the playback to where the phone call was started. This fails has a "hands free" device. Spent more time with my eyes off the road fiddling around with this unit than I did without it. The display is not bright enough to be seen in daylight and (even with the dimmer off). At night, the Call button is so bright (even with the dimmer on) that it is distracting to the driver and adversely affects night vision. Returned it for the JVC KW-R910BT. For $20 more, a much better unit that has Bluetooth functionality that works as you would expect and multiple options for setting the brightness of the display.

I was very apprehensive about doing the install myself but very eager to replace the stock radio (finally!) in my 2005 Corolla. After a hiccup upon discovering that my Corolla has a JBL sound system installed (apparently a rare unicorn) I ordered and received everything needed to swap out stereos. After 1 phone call with Crutchfield texh support I felt confident enough to assemble all the parts and with a friends help, we tackled the install. This is a massive upgrade from my old setup, and getting it set up has been relatively easy. For you iPhone users: BT auto-sync must be turned on and you must first set up the connection by connecting your iPhone via USB with bt enabled on the phone. This pairs it and will allow auto sync every time you get in the car. (I found this difficult to understand in the manual and the internet was zero help). Overall it has great sound, I like the color display, and the bt link is great.

I recently ordered the Sony MEX-N5000BT for my 2001 Ford F150 Super Crew. I used to have a great quality Kenwood stereo but I wanted Bluetooth. So I asked Crutchfield's product advice people in a chat room and he suggested several stereos and I shopped around and decided on this. Keep in mind that I have had 3 Sony decks over the years and I have never regretted it... So I ordered this to replace the Kenwood that I gave to my father for father's day. When I installed it and finally figured out how to use the menu I was shocked by the abundance of features that the Kenwood did not have. I especially like the HIGH PASS FILTER (HPF on the screen) it allows me to filter all of the lows from my door speakers and lets the sub take care of them, I like this cause it avoids distortion that the speakers give off when they can boy handle the bass.

Pros: Music synchronized variable color illumination. High Pass Filter. Ease of Bluetooth connectivity and operation.

Nothing but problems. The iPod USB connection (the main reason I bought the unit) keeps disconnecting, probably once every 2 or 3 minutes it will say "No USB Device" the re-read the iPod and start playing again, even tried two different USB cables and that didnt change anything. The sound quality is no better than the 15 year old stock Ford unit, I went through every setting on the unit trying to make the sound better without any success. Bluetooth connection is inconsistent, sometimes it connects fine other times it connects without any success. Lastly a tiny almost hidden button for changing inputs from the head of the unit makes it difficult to change inputs while driving. Very frustrated that I wasted two hours installing such a bad unit. The Crutchfield team was great in answering my questions and the instructions they provided were comprehensive and easy to follow.

My main reason to purchase was for the bluetooth audio and smartphone integration features. These work reasonably well, but have areas in need of polish. The android app is buggy and regularly crashed on my MotoX. I uninstalled it and simply use the native bluetooth pairing. While this works it disables some of the head unit button functions like track skip. Another annoying point is changing sources on the head unit. It would have been nice if the row of buttons allowed to directly select a predetermined source. Instead you have to toggle through source by repeatedly pressing the source button. Given the variety of sources (Fm1, 2... BT, voice, pandora, etc..) and the fact that there is a delay between each is annoying.

This Head Unit is the most awesome thing I've ever seen or have ever had in a build. I was able to take an outdated sound system, car design and bring my vehicle to the modern era. The HU can do whatever any other can. The price for what you get is extremely great. Even Wally World charges 200-250 for a similar Unit that's not a big brand name like "Sony". I've read several review prior to purchasing and was a bit worried about how complicated the system is and the fact that you had to blue tooth your phone every time you get into the vehicle. Personally it doesn't bother me since you're going to be messing with the radio before you start driving. The remote is very handy and a nice addition, but honestly don't see a point. I sat down for 5 minutes and had the entire Unit figured out. It's not that complicated, and I did it without reading any instructions (Male here).

Pros: Amazing Head Unit. Can change it to any color scheme you have for the vehicle. The Price. Looks amazing and sounds amazing.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I can't believe I waited this long to upgrade my factory radio. Replacing it myself always seemed daunting and expensive to get what I wanted. However, this radio has bluetooth calling which makes my commutes much safer and easier and pairing my iphone was a breeze. It also works seemlessly with Pandora. FM quality is much improved. The radio also looks really cool and was able to use the color selection to match the rest of the dash lights so it looks like it was made for my vehicle. Routing the bluetooth microphone was the most challenging part, but with some tech support from Crutchfield, it was straightforward and you can't even see anything except the mic itself. I would not purchase another car stereo anywhere else. The support is great, not to mention the free installation gear and guides. Highly recommend this radio AND buying it from Crutchfield.

Pros: Great sound, looks cool, bluetooth works great.

Cons: Takes some time to figure the menus out and Sony's setup instructions leave a bit to be desired.

This radio lives up to the Sony name. I like it because it provides all the functions that are include on new vehicle radio for a lot more cost i.e. Bluetooth, Pandora, xm, usb. easy phone connect and talk. The only drawback is the size of the icons on the faceplate...very small and for me difficult to read while driving. I highly recommend this radio.

Pros: Good sound, easy volume control, easy menu control, easy Bluetooth connection with smart phone (Samsung Galaxy S4)

Cons: Small icons on the face plate.

    Pros: Price. Sounds great.

Cons: Not as flashy as more expensive units. Display is simple LCD one color at a time (But you can change the color).

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Using with a Google Nexus 5 phone. I don't have big requirements for sound but this was a big improvement over factory receiver in my Honda Fit. My primary interest was in getting a unit that will interface with my Bluetooth phone. This unit works well once the BT connection is established but every time seems to be an adventure! I cannot find a procedure that consistently produces a reliable BT connection. The manual is badly written and uses confusing wording and inconsistent terminology. I'm sure I can eventually find a way to simply start it up but it seems like something different happens every time. The Crutchfield rep warned me that the Sony user interface would be difficult when I bought it. The "App Remote" android App is a great idea and works great once the connection is set up but it too suffers from some inconsistencies and bugs. I haven't been able to find any decent support from Sony on their Web site. Display brightness in daylight is horrible. Unusable without shading the unit. Crutchfield was wonderful to work with during the installation. Smart, knowledgeable reps that gave direct, useful answers to the three or four calls I made.

Pros: Sound, Bluetooth functionality and features

Cons: USER INTERFACE! Manual and Display Brightness Looks like a tennis shoe.

I'm 62 and was looking for a fairly simple radio/cd/mp3 player that worked well in my Monaco coach. This sounded like the one for me. So far it is working great, and better yet, I can operate it easily. The remote works well also.

    Pros: Works exactly as advertised

Cons: None yet. The sound quality would probably be better if I replaced the older ceiling speakers, but its good enough for my listening. Ease of use would have been 5 star, but it took a bit of reading the instructions to operate the system. I'm a guy and hate to read instructions.

Called Sony and they shrugged their shoulders and said they never heard of the issue. Then, after a few weeks unit just died. Took a week to get a replacement and after a week it DIED TOO! Then, by some miracle it started working again 3 days later... Returning it and getting something else that actually works.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installing the unit into my Jeep was easier than I expected, but there were two issues. First, it took a little while to understand that you need to bend the tabs on the outer frame to hold it into the mount, and second, the wire harness to the radio and the wire harness to the jeep are separate units and I needed to splice the 14 wires together - the colors do not exactly match, at least one of the wires had a stripe on one half, but not on it's match, and well - I'm color vision impaired which meant I had to have my wife double check my work, and finally there was one more wire on one half than the other. I was happily surprised when I hooked up the unit and all four speakers were putting out good quality sound. I tested it with a moody Blues CD and it was very crisp. A little disappointed that to pair my wife's IPOD via bluetooth, she first has to hook it up via the USB port - and it doesn't "Remember" the unit so she's had to do it every time. Once paired she can disconnect. Have not tried pairing to her android yet. Regardless for the price, this is a great unit and the sound is good even though it's hooked up to the Jeep's original speakers. The multicolor lighted display is slick looking, and the little remote will keep my teenage son entertained while he drive's his mom crazy switching the channels from the back seat.

Pros: Great sound for the price, Tuner picks up more stations than the older radio. CD player sounds great.

Cons: need usb wire to pair bluetooth, wiring harness with more than a dozen connections needed to be spliced.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this headunit in my 1997 Honda Del Sol Si roadster, pairing it with 2 sets of 5 year old Alpine Type S 6 1/2" speakers. My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S4. Installation was straightforward, and there was plenty of space to use the factory mounts and still be able to close the factory radio door. The unit looks very nice and with the rainbow effect display, looks as if it belongs there. There is also a Carbon Fiber touch to the front panel which matches the interior of my coupe nicely. So, I'd say aesthetically it was a very good choice. I did everything step-by-step and by the book, as professionally as I possibly could, since my lil low mileage roadster is my baby and I keep it in immaculate shape (soldered all connections, shrink tubed, tucked and zip tied off, etc.) It was worth it. I hid the BT microphone inside the console underneath the flip door and used a dab of super glue to keep it in place there. It works very well there in my application, picking up the least amount of wind/road noise. You are going to want to make sure to DOUBLE CHECK that you plug the Bluetooth microphone into the correct 1/8" jack on the back BEFORE you lock the deck into place. If you accidentally plug the BT mic into the steering wheel audio control jack, your radio will MALFUNCTION, behave very erratically, and cause you to believe it is a completely worthless piece of junk! Aside from that little snafu, installation was a breeze.

Pros: Looks better and more expensive than pictures, BT connection solid once on, DSP makes all sources sound decent at low to medium volume levels, good integration with Sony App Remote for Android, lots of features for the money, uses your phone's capabilities (text to speech, voice recognition, gestures, etc.) very well. Sony's minimalist approach to the deck itself, and allowing the phone to be the main control device and display, works pretty well and makes sense.

Cons: Amplifier does not have much headroom - the amp section is the part that reminds me that this is a lower priced deck. Good for listening at low to moderate levels but distorts easily at high volume. FM sensitivity is pretty bad. Most menu choices are weirdly named and not obvious as to what they do. Bluetooth source stops, disconnects and resets every time you turn the key - does not resume playback of previous source. Keyboard on phone is locked for use while App Remote is connected.

Pros: -Great Value -Easy to use -Looks amazing during night

Cons: Nothing honestly. Obviously you're not getting the best quality sounds like you would in $300 unit but it will sound better then any stock head unit. That doesn't even matter considering you can use an amp to power everything.

Ive never installed my own radio before and I attempted to do this one on my own, and it took me less than an hour to do. Crutchfield supplied the directions I needed and this was a very smooth install. The unit itself is pretty cool. The fact that I can control the unit using my iPhone is pretty sweet. Well if you drive during the day and want to see anything on the unit then the display is a problem. Any kind of external light and it's barely visable, bright light forget it. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver to replace a 7 year old Alpine in my Jeep Wrangler. Main reason was I almost exclusively listen to music on Pandora now and the Alpine does not support bluetooth or newer apple ios versions. You would be surprised how little 4G data is used streaming online music through your smartphone (not like video which will destroy you data plan). The Bluetooth works great with my iPhone 5S for streaming music, Siri and hands free calls. The sound is much better than the Alpine through my Polk Speakers. I would highly recommend this unit. At this price it is the best bang for your buck. Like most foreign designed electronics, the controls and features are very cumbersome and not intuitive. I would suggest using your smartphone via the USB to set things like balance, fade and EQ - very simple that way. Lastly I did have to download a BlueTooth App from iTunes which I was prompted to to do during setup. Installed it about a week ago and still learning how to use it.

Pros: Features, Sound Quality, Bluetooth, Price

Cons: User guide is not written very well. It will take some time to set up all the features and get comfortable with using them. I cant figure out how to get the clock to display when in BluTooth play mode.

Pros: ~ Very configurable and upgradeable ~ Very Well Priced for the options offered ~ Hands Free Calling ~ Smart Phone compatability ~ Music inputs are almost endless from radio, cd, aux in, usb in, to iPod, pandora, youtube, Practically anything you can stream on your smart phone. ~ has turned my smartphone into a very useable GPS ~ charges my smartphone ~ phone app is pretty cool for the fact that it moves the display of the stereo to wherever you mount your phone. No need to look down to o

Cons: ~ I'm a tech kinda guy and it took me a few mins to get the basic functions programed and working regarding settings and phone integration. ~ Siri integration works most of the time, sometimes needs a second or third try and a little patience as the system is slow to respond. ~ Phone app is listed as a Pro but also as a Con due to the fact that while cool, it still has a lot of room for growth. The tricky settings of the stereo could potentially be a lot easier to navigate from the phone.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great factory replacement for vehicles that weren't purchased with premium systems. I swapped this (with the free dash kit provided by Curtchfield) for the stock 6-disc changer head unit in my 2003 Subaru WRX, and I am (so far, 1 day in) very happy with the upgrade. For my car model, I will note that the head unit will not mount at the standard depth (flush with the dash kit, at the same level as stock unit). It was too wide at the face for the trim pieces to be reinstalled around it. I had to take it back out and move it further back on the mounting brackets. It now sits inset, and that does make it less than optimal to access controls along the edge (most notably the SRC and face detach buttons at the extreme left). I would have altered my trim pieces by cutting down the depth around the stereo, but I would rather just deal with the slight awkwardness of the inset unit.

Pros: - Feature set versus price - Bluetooth Audio & Phone - Front USB port (has no issues playing MP3s from my memory stick) - Lots of settings for tweaking audio (built-in equalizer) and display

Cons: - No HD Radio (not a big deal to me, but would have been nice) - Demo mode is active by default (can turn off in settings, but the labor of toggling it should be on the retailer, not the end user) - Complicated controls, buttons often change behavior depending on current activity - Occasional processing lag when navigating USB file system, not a huge deal, but it isn't constant so you may sometimes be left wondering if it is lagging or you didn't press the button hard enough

Buying online from Crutchfield was a breeze. I needed a radio/cd player that would fit our '93 EuroVan. Their customer service guy helped me to make sure I had everything I would need to have it installed. Shipping was fast, quality is very nice and indeed, I had everything the garage needed to install it! Excellent service and understanding. I am a grandma who got the radio for my granddaughter's car. Customer service was awesome knowing I had no idea what I was doing! Thanks guys!!!

Pros: I would definitely order from Crutchfield again. They make it so easy to get what you need. Very helpful.

Cons: Can't think of one thing! I can't seem to leave a five star rating. So I'll just say I give them a 5 on everything.

first I should state I'm an otr truck driver. I'm not home much to really give a real fair review of this unit. but here it goes, installed in a 2013 gmc sierria. the variable illumination is cool got it to match the dash lights. took a little while to learn how to move around in the setup menu. I feel the 10 band eq is a little bit to much 7 would be alright. sound quality at this time is so so. I'm trying to use the app I down loaded on to the phone to tweak the sound, but I don't know if it's the speakers I'm using or just haven't got it right just yet. the blue tooth function seems to be a little quirky, again it could be operator error. I have purchase 3 other sony units in the past and I am very happy with their product. overall value is great and it does look cool.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver was new and I wanted it to replace the factory unit in my aging vehicle. The online guide told me all that was necessary as far as fit and function, but I was debating between a couple of different units that Crutchfield had available and was having a difficult time as this seems to be a fairly new product with only a couple of reviews at the time so I called customer support to talk to staff and get a less biased opinion. The staff helped make this decision easy and I am so glad I chose this feature rich unit.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great headunit. The price on it is great for everything you get with it. I recently got the unit to upgrade my aftermarket I already had in the car (Pioneer Premier unit). I really wanted a system that had bluetooth. The bluetooth works great on the headunit, just make sure to mount the microphone in a good area. Most callers do not even recognize that I am driving when I answer (which is great). I also wanted the unit to have good integration with Android. With the NFC connect it's been super simple to connect and disconnect my phone from the stereo. The android application that accompanies the radio works great, it's awesome to be able to change radio stations, inputs, listen to phone audio all through the app. The sound quality is pretty good with the stereo too and having the dedicated subwoofer output really allows for clearer audio. I can also attest that FM radio does sound clearer then it did with my previous radio (it has a pretty well sensitive FM receiver). In short, I do recommend this product. The price is perfect for all that you get with it!

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Sony MEX-N5000BT is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (version 3.1), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.6 (Hands Free Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.3 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.5 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Sony MEX-N5000BT. Please visit Sony eSupport for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

Simple Pairing: With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Sony MEX-N5000BT without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. You can register up to nine Bluetooth enabled devices with the Sony head unit and keep two devices connected at all times (only one can be used at a time). Once paired, the MEX-N5000BT will automatically re-connect to your device when in close proximity. The head unit also offers unique pairing for Android and iPhone smartphone to make Bluetooth pairing even easier.

    • Near Field Communication (for Android): Android (OS 4.0+) smartphones that have Near Field Communication (NFC) pair simply by touching the Android device's NFC tag to the head unit's NFC tag on it rotary-knob. For older Android smartphones with OS 4.0 or lower, download the NFC Easy Connect app from Google Play to use the head unit's NFC pairing function.
    • USB Pairing (for iPhone): You can pair your Apple iPhone (iOS 5.0+) by simply connecting it to the Sony head unit via USB and activating the Bluetooth function on your Apple device.

Hands-Free Communication w/ External Mic: The Sony MEX-N5000BT supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled cell-phone (such as your iPhone or Android smartphone). Bluetooth hands-free communication helps to minimize distraction while driving by allowing you to control your mobile phone from the head unit, so you don't have to touch your mobile phone. The controls of the MEX-N5000BT can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also features an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering Calls: Incoming calls can be answered manually or automatically (between 3-10 seconds) through the Sony head unit, while the ring tone is output from your car speakers and the caller's name or phone number is displayed on the head unit's LCD. Incoming calls can also be rejected if desired.
    • Dialing a Number: Using the MEX-N5000BT, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways.
      • Entering Phone #: Allows you to manually dial a phone number using the unit's control dial.
      • Preset Dial: You can store up to 6 contacts in the preset dial for quick dialing.
      • Phone Book: You can store up to 1,000 contacts in the unit's phone book. Up to a 40 character name can be input for each contact.
      • Call History: The unit will store the last 20 calls, allowing you to select a previous phone number quickly from the list.
      • Voice Dial: You can make a call using the voice tags stored on your connected cellular phone.
      • Redial: Use to easily redial the last number you called.
Note: The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the level of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 11' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone comes with a mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.525" (diameter) x 1.515" (depth).

Wireless Audio Streaming (w/ Advanced Music Navigation): The Sony MEX-N5000BT can stream stored music and music apps from your Bluetooth A2DP/AVRCP mobile device (such as your iPhone or Android smartphone). In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat) for both stored music and music apps, the MEX-N5000BT provides a Search List of your stored music by Category or Playlist (AVRCP 1.4 phones only; which includes Android 4.0+ and iPhone 5.0+). The head unit will also display device's stored music and music app song information; such as Artist name & Song/Album title.

Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control: When paired and connected to an iPhone with Siri via Bluetooth (not USB), the Sony MEX-N5000BT has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel control and external microphone. Simply activate the "voice dial" function on the MEX-N5000BT to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the head unit and its microphone. The head unit will only display hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the MEX-N5000BT ; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

Note: You can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone with Siri. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

    Disc & USB Playback

Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs. The unit supports the playback of MP3/WMA music files on a CD-R or CD-RW disc.

The CD player will automatically reinsert the disc if it's ejected, but not removed for 20 seconds or more.

Mounting Angle: For proper CD playback, this unit must be mounted between 0 (horizontal) and 45-degrees.

    iPod/Aux Integration

iPod/iPhone Audio Playback w/ DAC Bypass: The MEX-N5000BT's front-panel USB port allows you to connect your iPod/iPhone via the iPod dock or Lightning connector-to-USB cable that comes with your iPod or iPhone (not included with the head unit). This USB 1-Wire for iPod/iPhone connection lets you directly connect, charge, & control select iPod/iPhones via the USB jack on the front of the unit, as well as view metadata like song title & artist name on the front display. The USB connection bypasses the iPod/iPhone's DAC and uses the head unit's 24-bit DAC to maximize sound quality. You can choose to control the your iPod/iPhone from the head unit (Head Unit Control Mode) or from the Apple device's clickwheel/touchscreen (Passenger App Control).

    • Head Unit Control + Song/Artist Info: The MEX-N5000BT's Quick-BrowZer feature allows you to browse your iPod/iPhone's music library by Artist, Album, Song, Genre, Playlist, or Podcast from the head unit's front-panel control; content in each category will be listed alphabetically. The unit also offers basic playback controls; such as Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Rewind, Previous/Next Track, and Repeat/Random. During Head Unit Control mode, the MEX-N5000BT will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information; including track #, elapsed playing time, song title, artist name, and album label. Newer Apple devices with iOS 6.0+ allow you to continue to use your Apple device's touchscreen to navigate your stored music and access music apps; older iPod/iPhone devices will be locked during connection.
    • Passenger App Control: In Passenger App Control mode, you can navigate the stored music on your iPod/iPhone device through its clickwheel or touchscreen; as well as music apps on an iPhone (iOS 3.0+). Basic playback functions, such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track are still available from the head unit. The Passenger App Control mode does not offer song/artist information display. Not all apps will be compatible with this mode.
Note: While connected and the ignition switch is set to ACC or ON, the head unit's USB connection will power and charge your iPod/iPhone (not iPad). If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then this unit will not recognize it.

Your iPhone (iOS 5.0 or later) will need to be connected to the head unit's front-panel USB port with the latest version of the Pandora App from Apple's App Store. Your Android or BlackBerry smartphone must be connected via Bluetooth to the Sony MEX-N5000BT (no hard-wired connection required); your Bluetooth-enabled Android or BlackBerry smartphone must have the latest version of the Pandora App from the Android Market or the BlackBerry App World. Your Android or BlackBerry smartphone must also support A2DP, AVRCP, and SPP Bluetooth profiles. Your iPhone, Android, or BlackBerry smartphone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. In addition, you will need an active Pandora music service account. The Sony MEX-N5000BT provides the following control over the Pandora music service streamed to your USB-connected iPhone or Bluetooth-enabled Android or BlackBerry smartphone.

    • Station List: You can select Pandora stations from your Station List by date or alphabetically (A-Z).
    • Skip Songs: You can skip song tracks within a station. You cannot skip back to a previous song. Pandora limits the number of skips allowed.
    • Thumbs Up/Down: You can give songs a thumbs up or thumbs down to help Pandora personalize stations to suit your preferences.
    • Bookmarking: The song or artist currently being played can be bookmarked & stored in your Pandora account.

Note: Access to the Pandora service will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone or smartphone to connect to the Internet. Pandora is not supported in Canada and only available in the United States.

SiriusXM Ready: The Sony MEX-N5000BT comes ready for SiriusXM programming with access to XM and Sirius Satellite Radio stations. Thanks to its proprietary SiriusXM Connect port, you can add the optional SXV200V1 SiriusXM Connect tuner and receive more than 150 channels of exclusive programming directly from SiriusXM, via the "SiriusXM All Access" package (subscription required). Visit SiriusXM.com for a complete list of subscription options and channel guide. Additional features of the SXV200 SiriusXM Connect tuner include:

    • Channel list displays a list of all available channels
    • Category Search searches for channels in a certain category
    • Displayed Information such as Channel Name, Artist Name, & Song Title can be viewed on the head unit's LCD
    • Up to 18 SiriusXM Satellite Radio station presets

Dynamic Reality Amp: The redesigned, internal Dynamic Reality Amp circuitry boasts 47% lower internal resistance compared to conventional in-dash receiver, delivering 55 watts x 4 channels of Peak power to your vehicle's speakers. This allows you to crank up the volume while maintaining low distortion, low noise levels, and smooth frequency response. The power output specs for the MEX-N5000BT are as follows:

    • Continuous Power Output: 17 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Peak Power Output: 55 watts x 4-channels (220 total watts)

Note: The power specifications for the Sony MEX-N5000BT are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers.

6ch/2V Preamp Outputs + Sub Control: The Sony MEX-N5000BT is equipped with 2-volt Front, Rear, & Sub pre-amp outputs giving you the ability to connect external amplifiers to your car stereo system. The unit's subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The subwoofer preamp output features a low pass filter with a selectable cut-off frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off. You can also adjust the slope (1/2/3) of the low-pass crossover. You can even adjust the subwoofer preamp output's volume level independently from the head unit's volume control from -10 to +10 in 1dB increments. In addition, you can select the phase of the subwoofer output from Normal or Reverse.

Note: You can connect a subwoofer to this head unit without the need of a separate power amplifier. Simply connect a single subwoofer (4-8 ohm) directly to head unit's left or right rear speaker leads (but not both). Same subwoofer controls apply.

High-Pass Filter: The front & rear speaker outputs offer a selectable high-pass crossover frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off. You can also adjust the slope (1/2/3) of the high-pass crossover.

Advanced Sound Engine: Sony's Advanced Sound Engine creates an ideal in-car sound field with digital signal processing. Advanced Sound Engine contains the following features: EQ10, ClearAudio+, Listening Position, Rear Bass Enhancer (RBE), Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE), Advanced Auto Volume (AAV), and Loudness.

    • EQ10 w/ ClearAudio+: R&B, Rock, Pop, Dance, Hip-Hop, Electronic, Jazz, Soul, Country, Custom, or Off (Flat). The Custom mode allows you to make your own equalizer settings. You can adjust the level (+/-6dB) of 10 different frequency bands - Band1 (32Hz), Band2 (63Hz), Band3 (125Hz), Band4 (250Hz), Band5 (500Hz), Band6 (1khz), Band7 (2khz), Band8 (4kHz), Band9 (8kHz), and Band10 (16kHz).
    • Listening Position: This unit can change the localization of sound by delaying the sound output from each speaker to suit your position, and simulate a natural sound field with the feeling of being in the center of it wherever you sit in the car. You can choose from Front Right, Front Left, Front Center, or Off. You can also set the subwoofer distance of the subwoofer to Near, Normal, or Far
    • Rear Bass Enhancer (RBE): RBE enhances the bass sound by applying the low-pass filter setting to the rear speakers. This function allows the rear speakers to work as a subwoofer even if there is no subwoofer connected.
    • Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE): DSEE improves digitally compressed music files by restoring high frequencies lost in the compression process.
    • Advanced Auto Volume (AAV) + Loudness: This feature adjusts the playback volume level of all playback sources to the optimum level. Loudness reinforces bass and treble for clear sound at low volume levels.

Beep Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Display Features

Detachable Face w/ Caution Alarm: The Sony MEX-N5000BT features a detachable face for theft prevention. If you turn the ignition switch to the Off position without detaching the head unit's front-panel, the caution alarm will sound for a few seconds. The alarm will only sound if the unit's built-in amplifier is used. No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Dynamic Color Illuminator (35,000 colors): Dynamic Color Illuminator lets you match the head unit's LCD & button illumination to complement your existing vehicle lighting components. With selectable Sound Synchronization, the timing of the color change is synchronized with the audio source. You can select from 12 preset colors (red/amber/m-amber/yellow/white/light green/green/light blue/sky blue/blue/purple/pink), customized color (R-G-B), & 5 preset patterns (rainbow/ocean/sunset/forest/random). The unit's Dynamic Color Illuminator offers the following advance features.

    • Day/Night Color Mode: You can register a customize color for the unit's display and buttons for day & night time driving.
    • Sound Synchronization: The color changes according to synchronization of playing music. When you select a preset pattern sound synchronization becomes effective.
    • White Menu: You can display the menu more clearly (White text) without concern for the unit's other color settings.
    • Start White: When you power-on the head unit, the color of the unit's display and buttons turn white and then the color changes to your chosen customize color. You can enjoy this effect whenever the source is turned on.
Note: To change the brightness of the display you can set the MEX-N5000BT to one of three dimmer modes; Dimmer Auto (dims the display automatically when you turn your vehicle's lights on), Dimmer Off (deactivates the dimmer), and Dimmer On (display always dim).

Auto Scroll: The Auto Scroll feature allows long displayed items to scroll automatically across the display when the track is changed on a disc.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Source/Off button once will switch sources. Pressing and holding the Source/Off button for one second will turn off audio output, but the clock display and button illumination remain on. To turn the unit off completely, you must press and hold the Source/Off button for two seconds.

Auto Off: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you can set the unit to turn off all lighting a set amount of time after you turn the power off. The Auto Off feature can be set to 30 seconds, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or No.

Demo Mode: The head unit's demo mode can be turned On or Off.

    Remote Control

App Remote Technology: Sony's App Remote Technology offers two-way communication between the Sony MEX-N5000BT and your USB-connected iPhone (iOS 5+) or Bluetooth-paired Android smartphone (2.1-2.3 Froyo/Gingerbread, Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0-4.2). You will need to download the free Sony App Remote application from the Apple App Store or the Google Play App Store. This application integrates compatible Apple iOS and Android apps into the selectable source list of the Sony CD receiver and lets you launch apps from the head unit. You can operate basic functionality of compatible audio apps directly from the receiver (operation differs depending on the app). Movie and navigation apps will continue to be controlled from your smartphone. In addition, you can control the receiver's sources directly from the application on your smartphone using simple finger gestures and see detailed source information on the phone's touchscreen.

    • Receiver Sources: The App Remote lets you access the head unit's Tuner (AM/FM), CD, iPhone, Bluetooth, and Aux sources from your phone's touchscreen. You can use finger gestures to tap, flick left/right, or flick up/down on the phone's touchscreen in order to change AM/FM Band, Play/Pause a track, Seek Up/Down a track or station, select a Preset, or access an Album. You will also be able to see song/artist information from MP3/WMA and smartphone sources, as well as station identification numbers from AM/FM radio.
    • Compatible Apps (as of 2/19/2014): The App Remote also provides various music, movie, and navigation apps which can be accesses from the Sony MEX-N5000BT's source list. Available operation differs depending on the application.
      • Music Apps: Music apps include; Pandora, AUPEO!, iHeartRadio, MOG, and TuneIn. The head unit only provides basic Play/Pause functions and no song/artist information for these music apps.
      • Movie Apps: Movie apps include Netflix and YouTube. Video will be displayed on your smartphone's screen, while the audio plays through your vehicle's speakers. You can control Play/Pause from the MEX-N5000BT. Other playback functions will need to done on your smartphone. Subscription may be required. You should not watch videos while your vehicle is in motion.
      • Navigation Apps: Supported navigation apps include Apple Maps, Google Maps, Waze, and MotionX GPS Drive. The map screen will display on your smartphone's touchscreen, while audible directions can be heard through your vehicle's speakers. You can continue to listen to music streamed from your smartphone while navigating; the unit will attenuate your music during a navigation voice-prompt. Control of the navigation apps will still be done through your smartphone's touchscreen. Fees may apply for some navigation apps & functions.
    • Voice Communication + Notification Readout (Android only): Exclusive to Android devices, App Remote technology for the MEX-N5000BT head unit adds a voice user interface for voice control of apps and functions such as navigation and music playback, notification readouts including RSS feeds, Twitter, and text message reply. Through voice operation, you can safely and comfortably operate your smartphone in the car from the Sony MEX-N5000BT CD receiver. Incoming SMS/E-mail and Twitter/Facebook/Calendar notifications are automatically read aloud through the MEX-N5000BT and your vehicle's speakers to keep you in touch.
    • Custom Sound Settings: From your Android smartphone remote screen, you get access to audio & DSP settings (Equalizer, Volume Control, Fader/Balance/Subwoofer, and Listening Position).
Note: Access to the music, movie, and navigation apps will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Wireless Remote Control: The head unit comes supplied with an IR wireless remote control (RM-X231) for easy operation. The included wireless remote allows you to control the basic functions (not Bluetooth) of the Sony head unit while keeping your eyes on the road.

Stiff competition for others in its class

Written by Alexander Hrabe, Copywriter, on 3/27/2014 10:16:00 AM

At this price, the Sony MEX-N5000BT is a hard one to beat. As a dyed-in-the-wool Android user I was pleased right off the bat that the NFC (Near Field Communication) feature allowed me to pair with this receiver by simply touching my phone to the volume knob. Once paired, I quickly discovered that it's the AppRemote feature that makes this receiver special. The app facilitates a 2-way connection that lets you control your phone via the receiver or your receiver via your phone, ostensibly turning this single-DIN into a touchscreen unit.

It's worth spending a little bit of time playing with AppRemote to figure out the best way to use it, since some apps like Google Maps are better accessed outside of the interface, while others, like music apps, work smoothly within. With future versions of the software, I'd imagine Sony will work out the kinks, but one thing they have nailed is the sound settings menu, which gives you multiple screens to perfect your levels and soundstaging.

On top of it all, Sony has built a nice-looking single-DIN receiver with a big, textured volume knob and a clean, no-nonsense LED display. Add to that, SiriusXM compatibility, solid CD playback, a front USB input for your iPod, and there's not much left to want in a radio this size.

    I don't know but that's an excellent idea [ ARTHUR D  Feb 27, 2015 ]
From what I've found day/night is only good for brightness and it usually knows if you have your dash lights on if you set it to auto but as far as different colors for day/night I don't think there's a way [ Barrett  Feb 25, 2015 ]
I am thinking a wire for dash lights would be needing to be connected. Then drill the setting for the color. Personally I have not done this. But, the unit would have to know when to change from day to night lighting. [ RODNEY  Feb 25, 2015 ]
I've had a lot of problems with this stereo randomly shuttng off and resetting. So the lights reset all the time and are hard to read anyway, especially in the sun. To answer your question, I think you can only manually set the light color. I would look elsewhere either way. [ TRAVIS  Feb 25, 2015 ]
Through menu and settings. It has a lots of options and can change many times automatically for example. I think it changes color relevant to music pitch/frequency. I set mine to match my speedometer color. I like the radio and worth the buy. [ michael  Feb 04, 2015 ]
press the menu button until is says display, scroll through the display options till you get to colors or custom colors, it will then prompt you through the rest. when finished use the back arrow to exit in order to save your settings. I hope this helps! [ Alec  Feb 04, 2015 ]

Thanks Richard, I was able to get it to work but the head unit does not behave exactly the way the manual describes. In any case, I'm able to make calls and listen to BT audio so I can work with the quirks. [ Ken  Jan 27, 2015 ]

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: This receiver will not allow Pandora to play through the USB using an Android phone. You will either need to use Bluetooth which will let you control it from the radio or your phone, or you can use an auxiliary input which would have to be controlled from the phone. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy  Jan 21, 2015 ]  Staff
are you talking about Siri or sirius xm radio [ ELIZABETH  Jan 14, 2015 ]
To use SIRI you will need to press the phone home button. SIRI will come over the speakers and use the microphone. If the phone is unlocked pressing the call button on the radio sometimes initiates SIRI but I had better luck initiating from the phone. [ SCOTT  Jan 12, 2015 ]
Yes I use it with my S5 everyday, works great. [ AMANDA  Jan 12, 2015 ]
I am using a Samsung Galaxy Centura (Tracfone) and it is working well. I am guessing that the S5 will have no problems [ ORVAL E  Jan 09, 2015 ]
Hello, I have this head unit in my Chevy malibu-I myself have a galaxy s3 and it works fine. Switching between synced sources can be a little confusing(unit remembers up to 6 BT devices-1 primary which will have control over apps and will be the phone interfaced with unit where as the other sources are selectable thru BT menu). I have had a friend sync his s 5 to the car it also worked well-i only mention he source selection b/c at first I was lost and had to resync my phone after someone else added one. now I know I just have to reelect the proper paired source. Aside from compatibility(which I haven't found a non-syncing one yet), I have to say the head unit is all around good, many display options, good sound, I'm completely happy. I have the unit pushing kicker 400/4, 800/1, ks 6.2(x4), with an L7 12"-I dont use the head unit equalizers b/c they defeat the amp equalizers and cause a little clipping at high volumes. Hope this was helpful. [ JOSHUA A  Jan 09, 2015 ]
I have the s5 everything works for Bluetooth even Pandora [ MIKE  Jan 09, 2015 ]

I havent linked the iPhone via USB rather i link it up via bluetooth. I can't comment on how the skip button works for the music app or Pandora, but i frequently use Spotify and i am able to skip to the next song directy on the radio itself. So i am asuming that if you have the iPhone bluetooth linked and pluged into the USB (to charge the iPhone) it will do the same for Music App or Pandora. I cannot comment on the use of the remote, primary because I have a small car and very close to the radio and have no use to use the remote. [ RUSSELL  Dec 29, 2014 ]
Yes you can use the skip buttons on the radio or the remote to skip songs on iPhone. This works for stock app, iTunes Radio, pandora, slacker and google music that I've tried. For pandora you're supposed to even be able to use buttons on the radio to "like" songs. I'm a primary Slacker user and you can't "like" through the radio there but everything else works perfect. [ Barrett  Dec 20, 2014 ]
I would not suggest buying an iPhone or any other product from apple for that matter you can get a lot more for a lot less from other manufacturers [ ARTHUR D  Dec 17, 2014 ]
Thanks, that's what I was looking for. Turns out that apps that support the HFP Bluetooth protocol work like that with this unit. [ TN Ian  Dec 06, 2014 ]
Oh ya I use "waze" for directions and it doesnt mute it but it kind of turns it down so that the directions from your maps app greatly over shadows the music or atleast that's been my experience . [ Ricardo  Dec 06, 2014 ]
Sorry I can't even set my clock so it stays on if I change outputs. Not too happy about the instructions and I am a computer literate person. Maybe try putting the radio on Bluetooth [ BARBARA  Dec 05, 2014 ]

Bluetooth pairing, audio playback, and phone calls work great with my Note 4. I haven't tried using NFC yet though. [ RYAN  Nov 26, 2014 ]
I am using a galaxy s5 with no problems. They are essentially the same phone. Just one has a bigger screen. [ JEROME  Nov 25, 2014 ]
You can either press the call button to access a menu including "recent calls" which is what I use. Or you can use the big volume button to access Google now / s voice. [ Jacob  Nov 24, 2014 ]

Have you paired your phone and the stereo? If you haven't done that yet all you have to do is press the menu button>>scroll through with the volume knob until you find where it says pair device>>push the volume knob to select pair device. This should solve the problem. [ AUSTIN  Nov 30, 2014 ]
If you have bluetooth turned on, it should automatically connect after a minute or so of turning on, regardless of the case. Perhaps you're looking for NFC connectivity. Check the setting for NFC on your phone and also check out an app for the Sony unit called NFC quick connect or easy connect or something like that. If all that fails contact Sony customer support. [ NATHANIEL  Nov 19, 2014 ]
My experience has been, once the unit is powered down you have to manually reconnect, i was going to call Sony and ask about this myself, it would be better if it did it auto. Not much help, sorry. But this is a really nice unit, very pleased other wise. Enjoy [ DENNIS  Nov 19, 2014 ]
If it doesn't connect automatically in my car when I start it, I push the pause button "6", on the head unit and it connects. [ ROBBY  Nov 19, 2014 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: There isn't a Google Now app built into this radio. You have to turn demo off and then you can change the color to what your preference is and the beeping can't be turned off sadly [ Noah  Sep 22, 2014 ]
I have never had that probelm, the manual is pretty simple as far as setup is concerned, but u can reset the unit and start again or take it to a audio shop and they can show u properly how to how to correct ur unit. Hope this helps. [ paul  Sep 21, 2014 ]
Yes those all be changed, the manual has very good written drill down menu. I would reference you check the back of the manual and it will explain where to change the settings for your concerns. [ RODNEY  Sep 21, 2014 ]

    Press menu// set display// demo off. Set general// set beep// off [ JONATHAN  Sep 21, 2014 ]
Gordon if you go into the menu section you can turn the beeps off. Also check your color settings because it sounds like you have the color scan feature turned on. Hope this helps! [ Ronnie  Sep 21, 2014 ]
Yes, these are shutoff easily through the general menu setup options. [ TIMOTHY  Sep 21, 2014 ]

I think you will have to start over and pair the original phone again and then everything should be o.k. Have you tried this yet? [ ORVAL E  Aug 31, 2014 ]
Hello, I had the same trouble the 1st time I paired my wife's phone to the unit. The Head unit seems to want to stay fully connected to the last device it was interfaced with. I don't recall exactly how I overcame the issue but I believe that if you look at the Bluetooth settings on the phone it will show the available connection but not be automatically connected-i think that's how I got it to resync to my phone it was only an issue once(its been a few months-im sorry I don't recall exactly), and if its not re-paired thru the phone settings then it may have been the app that helped solve the issue. No, but my I pod will not stay connected to Bluetooth, seems like customers are having different issues with this radio [ KEVIN  Jul 31, 2014 ]
    Sorry, I have not experienced that. [ RONAL  Jul 30, 2014 ]
Had a similar problem. You need to go into your setup and find the CT. This is set to ON by default and needs to be turned OFF. This is the automatic Clock Time setting that resets your clock to the time that the station you're listening to is set. Which obviously is wrong. Try it. [ KEVIN  Jul 30, 2014 ]

You have to turn demo off by pressing menu then demo then select off then choose your colors and settings and it should not change. [ RAVI  Jun 24, 2014 ]
The Demo mode should be able to be canceled by following a few steps. I have copied the manual's guide to this adjustment below. It is also available on page 17. I hope this helps. Settings Canceling the DEMO Mode You can cancel the demonstration display which appears while this unit is turned off. 1 Press MENU, rotate the control dial to select [DISPLAY], then press it. 2 Rotate the control dial to select [DEMO], then press it. 3 Rotate the control dial to select [DEMOOFF], then press it. The setting is complete. 4 Press ~ (back) twice. The display returns to normal reception/play mode. Thank you! [ WESLEY  Jun 24, 2014 ]
Yes, I don't remember exact how, but you need to scroll through the settings and turn off the demo mode. [ RODNEY  Jun 23, 2014 ]
Battery connection requires a constant 12vdc supply. Wiring issue. [ KEVIN  Jun 23, 2014 ]
Jeremy, for me, all settings are saved in the radio. I do have to reset things if I disconnect my battery (I've had to do that twice in a few month period). I'm wondering if there's a connection not hooked up in how your car stereo has been wired up. [ TIMOTHY  Jun 22, 2014 ]
If it isn't saving then make sure you 12v is properly connected. Sounds like you have it in ignition wire. [ MICHAEL  Jun 22, 2014 ]
Your problem sounds like it is a electrical problem in your car not the radio [ Noah  Jun 22, 2014 ]
Once the radio is connected to the phone it will not turn on automatically you have to hold down the volume button for just a few seconds and it connects. Once you sink it, it connects easily. [ Jason  Jun 25, 2014 ]

I can't speak spedifically to a Galaxy phone, but it pairs automatically with a Moto x no problem. Hope that helps. [ RANDAL  Jun 23, 2014 ]
Paul, The Stereo is completely capable of remembering more that one Bluetooth device. Once paired, there will be no need to pair again unless you specifically delete the connection like when you get a new device. I am not familiar with the S3 but I can't imagine it being any other way. We paired several different phones with no issue. Hope this helps, Kevin [ KEVIN  Jun 23, 2014 ]

you have to go to the bluetooth settings on the phone. its very straight foward. if you can push buttons, you can DO IT! [ JOSE  Jun 21, 2014 ]
    I have a I phone 5 and I have to do the same thing wish I could help [ john  Jun 21, 2014 ]
I have to pair them each time. I have tried different ways to work around it and nothing works. It's not hard to pair them but it is sort of a pain to have to do it every time. Having said that, the rest of the system is great. I love it. [ GARY  Jun 21, 2014 ]
Once it's paired the S3 will connect every time you start the car. [ KEVIN  Jun 21, 2014 ]
It connects automatically with an iPhone 5S. I'm sure the android is the same. Awesome unit. [ RICHARD  Jun 21, 2014 ]
My wife has a Galaxy S4 and it automatically connects when you turn on the radio. [ Darren  Jun 21, 2014 ]
Yes, this does have RDS. And it works very well, as long as your station is actually broadcasting the RDS. I have one local station that resently stopped broadcasting the RDS, now I've switched stations. [ KEVIN  May 20, 2014 ]
Yes it does. Not much this beauty doesn't do! [ GREG  May 20, 2014 ]
Yes. There is a button on the far right that allows the user to scroll through the various information available per station. [ Rob  May 20, 2014 ]

    Yes, it does. [ Darren  May 19, 2014 ]
Yes Brent, it shows the radio station and the name of the song. [ DONNA  May 19, 2014 ]
Its just fine I get no lag on this unit my friends are now buying this unit havent had prblem or complaint one yet [ SHAWN  May 25, 2014 ]
I have this stereo and it is amazing! I am very pleased with it. [ AUSTIN  May 23, 2014 ]
    There isn't any lag promise [ JAMISON  May 20, 2014 ]
From the knob, the volume control is very responsive. Pretty much immediate. I don't know about the remote as I've never used it to change the volume. [ DENNIS  May 20, 2014 ]
In my opinion the volume control on this unit is very responsive. Although the control knob is used to control various other functions, it is prioritized to the volume unless another function is chosen through the menu. I have found that the control knob is, in fact, so responsive that when rapidly turning the controls and adjusting the volume from one extreme to another, the actual audio will adjust faster than the display. This does occur only when going very rapidly from one extreme to another; otherwise, no delay, no annoying beep, just great control. [ LONNELL  May 20, 2014 ]
The volume control is very responsive there is no lag whats so ever im very happy with this unit [ GABRIEL C  May 20, 2014 ]
The volume is very responsive using the radio, remote or phone. It also has a dual adjustment one for music and the other for hands free talking. [ CHRISTIAN L  May 20, 2014 ]
The knob on the unit controls the volume. It is very responsive. I have never had any issues with volume control. [ DAVID  May 19, 2014 ]
I find the volume control to be very responsive. I have two of these units, and I love them. [ WILLIAM  May 19, 2014 ]
It is my understanding that Bluetooth will only connect to one device at a time. Not a limitation of the device but of Bluetooth. [ Hal  May 22, 2014 ]
I have never tried but I think probably not. I just searched in Bing and found this: "If your headset doesn't not have multipoint technology, it cannot connect to two receivers simultaneously." [ ORVAL E  May 20, 2014 ]
I have never tried to pair 2 devices at once but it does have a usb input as well so you can pair your phone on BT and connect your tablet via usb. I hope this helps a litte [ ANTHONY  May 20, 2014 ]
If you plan on using Bluetooth for both, only one can be paired with the radio at a time. You would have to have the radio pair with the other device every time you switched. I am unsure about NFC. [ KEITH  May 20, 2014 ]
i, I've had the unit for about 3 weeks nnow so I'm still figuring it out myself but so far I've been able to pair 2 devices at the same time and then play audio from each. I have a galaxy s3, my wife has a s4,(both paired). And my friend paired an older smartphone(unsure model) he jumped in and paired his just for a few songs but it played fine-my phone was still paired and I retook control using the head units ap thru the phone. Im still figuring it out myself and have the unit in my daily driver so I haven't sat and played around yet. The manual says that the unit will prioritize to last connected smartphone, also says if you have smartphone with android OS 4.0 or lower you will need an app to connect using NFC. "Note: while streaming Bluetooth audio, you cannot connect from the unit to the cellular phone. Connect from the cellular phone to this unit instead". The best I can answer is yes-but I wouldn't hinge purchase on my statement without first calling Sony to check compatibility with your phone itself. I highly recommend the unit I have similar Sony unit in my truck that I love . Hope I was helpful. 98' Chevy Malibu Sony mex-n500bt Kicker ks 6.2. (2) Kicker kx 400.4 Kx 800.1 12" L7. 4ohm. [ JOSHUA A  May 20, 2014 ]
hello you can only use one device at a time because it will occupy the only connection that the radio have; also the tablet just can connect one other device at the same time so it wont be possible; i recommend to use an auxiliar option and maintain the bluetooth connected to the phone [ DEAN  May 19, 2014 ]
I don't have a bluetooth phone, but the microphone cord is over 6 feet long after running it back from the back of the receiver down to my console area (6 feet left over). [ TIMOTHY  Apr 30, 2014 ]
It pauses the current mode and switches to phone mode. For instance, while listening to a podcast from my phone, it suddenly stopped and the phone rang on the speakers. I pressed the phone button and answered the call. When the caller hung up, my podcast resumed. The microphone cord is maybe 5 feet long? It was plenty for me to route underneath my dash, up the left front window post, and mount on the visor in front of my forehead. I had several extra feet then which i stored behind the radio. [ Roger  Apr 28, 2014 ]
The radio switches from the tuner mode to the Bluetooth phone mode, so yes the radio does mute so you call hear the phone. I did not measure the cord, I am guessing 8'. [ BRIAN D  Apr 28, 2014 ]
Yes, the system mutes the radio, and pauses if I am streaming from my android phone. Call comes thru over the speakers as long as BT is connected. People on the other end of the call say my voice seems muted tho. Not sure how long the cord is, at least 4 ft. . I used the clip and mounted to the arm of my turn signal.. [ ERIN J  Apr 28, 2014 ]
Yes. The music mutes when a call comes in. Cord is 11 ft (per crutchfield) [ DINO T  Apr 28, 2014 ]
Yes. The radio is muted. Mic cord is approx. 8Ft. [ EDWIN  Apr 28, 2014 ]
The mic cord is about 6 ft. The bluetooth calling has its own source mode. So yes the music will stop. Once your call has ended the reciever will automatically go back to the previous music source. [ ZECHARIAH T  Apr 28, 2014 ]
Yes it does. My son loves the stero, especially for the price. Easy installation as well [ RICH  Apr 27, 2014 ]
The music turns on and off automatically when on the phone and the mic cord is pretty long I mounted mine on the steering column and had to coil up a lot of extra cord behind the dash the stereo is highly recommended by me exceeded all expectations [ ARTHUR D  Apr 27, 2014 ]
Hello Andre, I recently purchased the Sony MEX-N5000BT and love it! Yes, the calling feature does lower the music and a chime alerts you to an incoming call. You can then choose to answer the call or not. You are also able to see the phone number and the name of the caller if they are in your phone's phone book. It works very well. The microphone cable is 11 feet in length allowing you to position it virtually anywhere. I have mine on the steering column just in front of the dash cluster. I hope this has been helpful. [ WESLEY  Apr 27, 2014 ]
It mutes the music when you get a call and it automatically starts playing again when it ends. The cord is pretty long, I don't know how long but I ran it from the radio to my wheel and had a ton of extra cord left over! [ NICHOLAS  Apr 27, 2014 ]
Blue tooth has the priority over the other sounds and mutes anything else. As for the mic cord length, all, I can say it was long enough to go from the center of the dash to the center of the steering column. Hope this helps, Rod [ RODNEY  Apr 27, 2014 ]
It turns the radio off when you use the phone. I don't know how long the microphone cord is but I was able to run it from the radio, through the dash, up the side molding and to the drivers side visor to clip. I still had cord left over. [ DEBBIE  Apr 27, 2014 ]
The app remote is not required for these functions. The App allows you to use the phone as a remote control for the radio. [ Roger  Apr 28, 2014 ]
I am using Nokia Lumia 710 with Window Phone. It work great with this Sony CD player. The Bluetooth pair easily and works for BT talk, voice, and media system including listing music and movie sound system. I didn't try with Pandora yet because I don't listen to Pandora that much. I use USB with my Ipod. The sony cd player control and charge the Ipod at the same time, seek songs and album. I am still learning to do the setup and adjust the setting. It got so much selection to do for this unit. Beside the price is not too bad. It is cheaper price compare 20 years ago for a CD player without BT. [ Ngadiran  Apr 17, 2014 ]
