Our take on the Sony MEX-N6000BH

Sony's MEX-N6000BH CD receiver cuts a bold figure in your dash, with carbon-fiber style accents and variable color illumination. And it works with your smartphone, offering plenty of ways to use it in your car. Sony's App Remote feature lets you take charge of selecting sources, picking radio stations, and launching apps from your phone's touchscreen, while on the other side you can select apps using this radio's source button, the same way you'd choose the CD player or radio as your source. Best of all, App Remote lets your phone work as a display for the receiver, so you can see album art, track info, caller information, and more on your phone, rather than reading it off the receiver's single line display.

Nobody will read this, but this unit stinks

Mike H from Springfield, IL on 5/18/2016

    2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I don't care what the official review says, it DOES NOT play CD-Rs with .mp3s and won't play flash drives with .mp3s. To switch between sources (say, CD and the radio) you have to hit the source button 8+ times since it goes through EVERY possible source. I took a flash drive that wouldn't work on this unit into a major retailer and plugged the same flash drive into a JVC, a Kenwood, and a Pioneer, all of them immediately recognized the .mp3s and started playing them. I doubt anybody reads this, this unit hasn't been listed for sale for several months now, but if you do and do decide to buy it... I'd advise against it. Good luck.

Pros: The HD radio works nicely, as does the bluetooth for phone calls. The next head unit I buy will have HD Radio, and bluetooth, and will NOT be a Sony. Oh, this unit also has nice display and you can read it during the daytime. Really, if it would recognize .mp3s I'd be happy with it but at the end of the day it is just a flashy radio.

Cons: Doesn't recognize .mp3s on flash drives. Doesn't recognize .mp3s on CD-Rs. And these are not issues with my flash drives or discs, it is Sony. To switch between sources you have to hit the source button 8+ times, and be looking at the screen because there is a delay between switching to a source (say, tuner) and for the music to start. Really, really annoying.

    Feature-rich product

Brian from tucson, AZ on 2/29/2016

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Everything about this product works great. The EQ is the most advanced I have seen in a car stereo. Having the rear speakers function as woofers is a very innovative option. Interacting with phone is fantastic, however I would advise not to use the radio app on the phone. Just standard bluetooth allows my S4 to be utilized, and the google voice recognition can do the heavy lifting. The app effectively disables this (as far as I could figure).

Pros: Works fantastic. Lots of great features that should be standard (firmware only!). Wonderful bluetooth integration.

Cons: Difficult menus (not bad during standard use, just during setup)

    Great Unit!!!

    Great value

    2003 Porsche Boxster
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great value and solid product for me. I installed the unit myself and I've been using this unit for about a month. This unit replaced the stock CDR-23 in the car. I was looking for a unit that basically supported hands-free Bluetooth for audio and the phone for a Samsung Galaxy S4 phone. The MEX-N6000BH fits these requirements perfectly for me and has performed wonderfully for this. I was a little concerned about how effective the mic and hands-free operation would work in a convertible (my daily driver, 2003 Porsche Boxster). I placed the mic just to the right of the dash cluster in my line of sight. I've had no complaints about wind noise or excessive background noise during calls with the top down. AT this time I have the unit driving 4" Polk audio speakers in the dash and 6.5" Polk Audio speakers in the door. This is working well for me as I don't have any issues with being able to turn the volume to a reasonable level and hearing music or calls with the top down on the car I use this radio with the Sony AppRemote most of the time with no problems and don 't have any issues or quirks to speak of. I'm very pleased with the unit, have no complaints and could recommend this unit for those that have an Andriod phone/tablet and don't need the latest, greatest, most-up-to-datest features. Thanks to the Crutchfield crew for their recommending this unit.

Pros: Good value, good sound for my purpose, nice creature feature set, it fit my car! Works great with my Android phone. Mic works well (even in a convertible). Nice options for shaping the sound to most tastes.

Cons: Would be nice if it saved your settings for when the battery for the car is disconnected. If it has this I've not seen or found it yet. Other than that, no cons to speak of so far.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed the head unit in 2008 Ford Escape. Installation was a hassle only because there were no installation directions from the manufacturer. Installed this in a Scosche double din panel. The headunit was too wide with the din harness and the front bezel on. Called Crutchfield and they walked me through how to get everything off - it was easy - just why Sony couldn't have included some basic info is beyond me. The unit sounds great. Instructions on pairing phone are a little sketchy - daughter had trouble getting her phone to remain paired but she finally got the right sequence in and works great. Sound is good. BT phone through mic is good. Its all good.

Pros: Crutchfield Support. Sound is good. Has a good feature set.

Cons: Instructions. Get a grip Sony!

Good Value - hands free calling works great

Pros: Has a ton of features, bluetooth sounds and works great for both music and calls. Overall, very happy with the product.

Cons: The eq is very in depth and can be very confusing, Wired mic for bluetooth is an eye sore,

    2002 Audi TT
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Besides having more settings than I have even figured out yet, this is a great unit. The sound quality is much better than the previous unit in my 2002 Audi TT, much better than the factory system. The integration with the smart phone is fantastic; I haven't even figured out everything I can do with it yet. Since my wife is so in touch with her smartphone, I thought this would be a great step up over the SoundStream DVD unit I previously installed; the Sony has much more usability and features for what she does with her music and smartphone. Now I am thinking about getting one for my 95 Miata.

Pros: Quality unit, great sound, easy installation with all the right gear.

Cons: A lot of controls that take a little time to figure out.

    Great sound Easy to Use

    2002 Ford Escape
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced a Pioneer after the face plate was stolen. The install was easy and took about 30 minutes. The sound is great even with factory speakers. If you have the option to get the installation kit from Crutchfield you should do it. The old kit never quite fit and the one that came with the radio was almost perfect. I had a little trouble snapping the upper right side into the opening. I put it in without the radio and there is really no hand hold on the kit. Perhaps having the radio locked in place would make it easier.

Pros: Works with Apple and Andriod OS. The Sony app works very well from a Samsung Galaxy.

Cons: None really. The clock does not seem to display but perhaps I just need to read the manual again.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Love the product with 2 exceptions. In the details of the product it claims to be able to connect 2 phones while only one being able to operate at a time. Which was the reason I chose this model. Upon receipt of the product the manuel specifically says one Bluetooth device at a time. The wording has since changed on this unit, but the MEX-GS610BT and MEX-GS810BH still make that claim. Sony owner manuel of each specifically say only 1 Bluetooth device at a time. Other fault of the unit is without the remote it is frustrating to display the time. Love everything else so far. Have decided to keep product in lue of only phone connection due to ease of operation over brand that does offer duel phone connection.

Pros: Ease of operation love most of the features.

Cons: Time display frustrating get to. Only 1 Bluetooth device at a time.

Cons: No on/off switch. Difficult setup menu navigation.

Overall, this is an outstanding value. The unit is well made and works perfectly. The HD tuner is excellent and provides quality sound even 30 miles north of Atlanta. The Preset Sound EQ is great however, one must carefully read the Owner's Manual to get to each menu and each option. The unit accepts USB and mini plug inputs. I am very pleased !

Pros: Outstanding value for the money

    Cons: Complex menus to navigate

    2007 Toyota Camry
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit for my 2007 Camry to replace the factory stereo. I chose this unit over others because of the price and features. I love that it has Bluetooth and I use that often with my iPhone music. I wish the Bluetooth worked with iOS for Pandora, but instead you have to download an app and use Pandora through that. I haven't had much luck getting that to work so I just use the Aux. input when I want to play Pandora. Like others have mentioned, it can be difficult to read the display during the day. At night, the button for the phone is much brighter than any other button, and unfortunately, I could not connect my unit up to the cars dimmer control, so that button can be very distracting. I plan on covering it with electrical tape. I also agree with others that switching between sources can be quite cumbersome. It would be nice if you could delete the sources you never use, or if there were a couple more buttons dedicated to favourite sources. Overall, I'm happy with the unit, but after experiencing it in my car, I would not likely but it again.

Pros: Great sound, Bluetooth, customize colours, easy to install, good looking.

Cons: Display to dim during the day, the phone button is way to bright at night, having to use an app to use Pandora on an iOS device.

Wow, how to I give this a star rating??

Dandy D from Virginia on 11/23/2015

This is by far one of the Best sounding car receivers I've ever owned (or listened to) But it is one of the most convoluted radios to control I have ever dealt with And I have been a "techy" since I was a young teenager in the early 70's (I started out my love of audio listening to reel-to-reel..... you see??). The Smartphone APP is one of the stupidest things I've ever dealt with...... When the APP is running it disables All the controls on the head unit....And while it is running some of the features of the radio will not work (ie....there is no controller to turn on Bluetooth Audio, Bluetooth Pandora and others..... Additionally while the APP is running it disables the keyboard function on your Smartphone and you have to turn off the APP to be able to input anything to your phone (ie....send a text) The phone will read out texts/emails while you are driving but it's inconsistent...... last week it read out one text, while the phone was laying on the pass. seat.....then the next 2 texts I got it did not read out the texts and I had not touched the phone........ so trying to figure out what is going on with it is like passing a bill in congress. BTW..... I gave it a 3 because it's not bad but I could not give it a 5 because it's not easy to use......Learn it before you put the car in gear!!

Pros: One of the greatest sounds I've ever heard in a car receiver......

Cons: The Most convoluted receivers to figure out I've ever dealt with and I'm a 'techy'....... This is Not for the faint of heart And if you still have your VCR/DVD player flashing the 12:00...... Whatever you do Do Not get this unit!!

    I simply like it...

Once you get past the Learning Curve you're good to go. It's definitely different from the "back in the day" receivers. All I bought were Kenwood receivers. Guess what, returned the Kenwood KDC-BT362U for this sony. I simply like it.

Pros: With these new receivers tailored around todays music technology and the aide of "the smart phones", you can be more versatile with the way you want to play your audio. NICE...

Product has all the 'whistles and bells' you would expect from Sony. Plus - Crutchfield is an awesome retailer. They provide the parts and instructions to guide you through the install process. Any questions - just call them!

Pros: All the whistles and bells you would expect from Sony - surpassed my expectations! Great tech support from Crutchfield.

Cons: Bit of a learning curve to get comfortable with all the features / controls but worth it.

I had read the negative reviews before I took a decision to buy this unit. I had it installed on my Land. Rover Discovery II MODEL '2000 which had a factory fitted Harmon Kardon system. Just replaced the tuner and am using the original speakers which sound fine. It meets all my requirements like HD radio and connects to my iPod and my iPad. That gives me a lot of choices in terms of music that I can listen to. There is also a single CD changer and the Bluetooth function for connecting the phone is really quite good. All in all it is really good value for the price

    1998 BMW M3
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this for my 1998 M3 and I'm very pleased with the unit. I retained the stock Alpine/HK amp and speakers and used the included adapter to splice it into my stock harness. The BT audio works great and people have told me that then included BT microphone sounds better than any of my cars with stock bluetooth. Lastly, I like that I can adjust the hue of the backlighting to match the BMW orange exactly, both in normal and dimmer modes. I had to order a separate antenna adapter to fit my car since neither the one Crutchfield included, nor the one sent to later, fit properly. I ended up finding the Metra 40-EU10 to be the right adapter for my car.

Pros: Sound, color adjustments, included microphone, style

Cons: had to read a few pages of the manual.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Review title says it all. I shopped around for a new aftermarket stereo for my Mazda6s. There were quite a few options out there. Single DIN. Double DIN with touchscreen. Yadda, yadda, yadda. Crutchfield had the best price and made it REALLY easy to purchase all necessary accessories to complete the install myself. (Note to the first-time installers out there: I was nervous about tackling this project on my own. So, I had gotten prices from 2 professional installers to replace my factory unit with this SONY system. However, for the price they charge for labor alone, I said 'fuhgetaboutit' and took the plunge. to install myself And boy am I glad I did!) Crutchfield's customer service lives up to the hype, man. The on-line representatives - and yes, I spoke with multiple - were VERY helpful. The guy put a list of everything I needed to install my new stereo. During the install, I spoke to 2 representatives who helped guide and troubleshoot. MANY thanks to them! 4 hours of total install time car stereo was upgraded to the next level! Only disappointment was the dash kit (purchased by separate dealer). Doesn't exactly fit flush with the car surface at the top. But, eh, not too worried about it. SONY stereo sounds amazing. And I $aved me lots of money too. Thanks to Crutchfield for instilling the confidence in me to do this job myself (with their help!). You guys ROCK!

Pros: Incredible sound; Easy to use; Great options, HD radio is AWESOME!

Cons: Didn't fit my dash kit as well as I would've liked.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall very good head unit. Has everything you could need; bluetooth, hd radio, usb conectivity. Crutchfield provided the instructions, wiring harness and enclosure at 1/2 price or included. The only downsides are the Crutchfield technical support could not pinpoint my sound problem w/ confidence. Took me a few calls and trips to a local retailer to figure out a ground issue in speaker. It caused amp in headunit to shutoff to avoid damage. A good thing, but Crutchfield lifetime support could not pinpoint the problem. Other than that it works like should. Little reading of the manual to use some of the features, nothing complicated.

    2007 Ford Focus ZX4
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall features and function are good. Had to get first one replaced because of random power problems including: 1). Shutdown...needed reset. 2). Reset on it's own. 3). Kept going into demo mode. Either this was an anomaly or Sony quality has gone down...I don't know (???). I do know that I have been buying Sony CD head units for 20+ years and this is the first time I have ever had a problem. The replacement has worked great for one week, so-far. Neither unit fit squarely in the dash (using chassis mounting screw holes & Metra Ford kit). On both units, the left side was set back about 2 MM from the right. The second is also positioned upward about 2MM more than the first unit, causing quite a gap under the head unit, in the fit-kit. My guess is loose frame stamping/forming QC. As for the function, this unit uses the same Sony menu system as just about any other Sony head unit from the past 15 years...but with more features. Yes, the menus can be confusing, so be sure to keep the owner's manual in the car at all times. Bluetooth works good, as does the 10 band EQ. Can't get the App Remote to work with Android 5.0(???). Yes, I would buy this unit again.

Pros: Bluetooth. Remote Mic. RCA outs. Low & High Pass filter controls.

Cons: Fitment in dash. Sony menu system.

Great Bluetooth but has issues when listening to voicemails. Adjusting bass and treble levels is more difficult than it should be. Would like to see constant clock display. Instead you have to go through a bunch of menus to get the clock to display

Pros: Cool displays and design. Nice Bluetooth. Good sound. Decent price.

Cons: No constant clock display. Issues with iPhone 6 and listening to voicemails. Difficult to just bass and treble.

Pros: looks cool, easy to pair w/ phone and great sound. Basic features are intuitive and easy to use. The Crutchfield install kit was perfect fit and made install really easy.

Cons: As other users said, the manual is worthless.....if you want to turn off or change any defaults like color / dimmer, etc, you're on your own to figure it out. You have to play around with it for a long while to understand the menu system. At least the manual should have a 'map' of the menus? whoever programmed it at the factory had one.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Sony MEX-N6000BH is a single-DIN CD/AM/FM/HD deck with media (USB), Bluetooth and Audio-In source capabilities I purchased to install in a 2000 Honda Insight Hybrid. I'm pleased with the build quality of the unit - the chassis is strong, well designed, well-made. The sound quality of the audio amplifier, CD and tuner are clearly head-and-shoulders above the OEM radio it replaced. The controls are very well laid out and very refined in design. Scan buttons are large and the "selector dial", which doubles as volume control, is easy to use yet not in the way. The alphanumeric digital display is easy to read and understand. There are some quirks about the deck you should be looking out for. I've outlined those in pro/con form:

Pros: Great build quality, excellent quality amplifier stage, sensitive turner, great value for the price. This deck has all the important features (CD/AM/FM/HD deck with media (USB), Bluetooth and Audio-In source) with none of the problems one might expect to see in a car deck at this price.

Cons: Pairing with Android phone over Bluetooth is problematic. It seems to work, but stubbornly. The manual does not say, but you MUST install the App on your phone in order for it to work via bluetooth. I have not been successful getting the phone to connect to the unit via USB as a Media Device. The phone seems to be misbehaving with the app installed, and the app seems to be "stuck on" in the background and will not shut off. The phone is a Moto X on the Sprint network sold by Republic Wireless.

Nice radio. This is our second of this type (also have 810 model). Radio is excellent as are the accessory connections (USB and Bluetooth). The Bluetooth phone links right up and works great. The panel light options are very accommodating and we like a bright display for daytime and dark red at night.

    Pros: (As mentioned above)

Cons: The operating manual is almost useless for deep menu items like setting the panel colors for day and night. Took a lot of hacking to get it figured out.

I bought this unit to replace an older Sony Receiver that did not have USB, Blue tooth, and Aux. inputs. I was happy with the performance of the older Sony, but wanted the input options. HD radio is also a good option. I checked other brands, but couldn't find any that came close to this unit's options and price. I have always had good luck with Sony in the past, so I decided to stick with them. This unit was more than I expected. The sound quality was much better than the older unit. The display colors make it very customizable. The sound program also males it more versatile. Getting used to the operations take a little time, but no different than any other device today. Take time to read manual carefully to understand options. The remote is easier to use than unit buttons. I do have some trouble getting the unit to receive signals from driver position(I have radio installed in a Full size Ford Van). I think the sensor is to close to the control knob.

Pros: Good appearance and sound. Custom colors to match dashboard display. Many options in sound program. Good value and price.

Cons: Button operations take some time to fully understand. Infrared sensor could be located in better position.

It was an easy install, especially with the suggested kit. I wish there was an easy way to show the time when using the tuner. The other thing that would make more sense to me is to have the menu button be a short press to switch between display modes and a long press to bring up the menu. I spend a lot more time switching to find the time than I do making changes in the setup. Overall, great sound with the factory speakers, plenty of options to get the display how you want it, very nice features for the price.

This deck sounds great in my opinion in my little 2005 Miata. The installation was easy as well. Although if I ever have to take it out again it may require a bit more work to get it out. I have 3 problems with this deck which could be easily resolved in their next deck. #1. It doesn't show the time when it is playing music, I think it shows the time if you are on certain type of music source. #2. Too many sources, its great to have so many options, but couldn't they at least dedicated one button to Tuner? I have to scroll through 10 options to get to Tuner. #3. Whenever the volume is changed, it makes a noise. Is that really necessary and can I turn it off? If you can get past those three things, this is a great little deck because it does sound good and the display is bright enough even under severe daylight like in a miata with the top down.

Pros: Great sound and viewable display.

Cons: No clock.. Need a dedicated Tuner button.. Silly source button have to be used to scroll through 10 different sources.. Makes useless sounds when changing the volume..

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's a great radio. Great sound. The call quality appears to be good. It's great on my side. The six "channel favorite" buttons on the bottom can also be used to rapid dial your six favorite phone numbers. Most of the buttons on the face do more than one thing, which means that the device has twice the functionality, but it also means that you have to remember more and sometimes you have to wait for function A to time out before you can use function B. For example, the volume dial can be used to roll through selections or as volume. If your hand slips while you're driving and operating at the same time, you could find yourself with really loud volume that you can't turn down because it's in scroll function. This isn't unique to this device or the Sony brand. Many have this issue. There is some discussion of whether this can play USB files. Yes, it can. But it can't read, NTFS, can't read 64gig drives, (not sure if it can read 32 gig, but it can read 16gig). That being said, I don't think thumb drives are the best way to play music on this. The manual says that when it's reading mp3 files from a CD, that it has a limitation of 150 folders, and a combination of 300 files and folders. I don't know if the same is true of thumb drives. With a CD, it might load the file names into the radio's ROM, while the thumb has index files. So I don't know, but it is a concern. Hold down the Magnifying glass button and it will show you the folder names, but only one layer up.

Pros: (continued) The volume dial allows you to scroll through your folders or tracks. Hitting the Search forward button seems to make it go to the first file in the first folder. I found navigating in general with USB to be not so great - especially since the screen can only show a small number of characters at a time. I think hooking up your phone or other mp3 player and using those controls would probably be better. This thing does a great job of autoconnecting bluetooth audio so you're all set

Cons: (continued) every time you sit in the car. The Sony App Remote (get in the Play Store for free) allows greater functionality of the radio, but it also auto turns on when you get in the car. So if you're sitting on your phone, you could be accidentally pushing buttons on your radio. Also, on my phone, when the App is on, my keyboard won't pop up, so I can't type in an address into the phone's GPS, or anything else. The only way around this is to manually turn off app every time or un-insall.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm loving almost everything about this stereo. The sound quality is great. I love the HD radio -- fantastic. This Sony tuner does a very nice job of pulling in difficult stations. I've been very impressed with the bluetooth. After the initial pairing it has worked perfectly with my phone (Android 4.4) every time. Phone calls are very easy/intuitive to receive and the sound quality is great -- much better than the speakerphone on my phone itself. You can also make phone calls & control the phone using voice commands. This doesn't really work well, but that is my phone's fault, not the receiver's. When using the phone the stereo pauses/mutes and then restarts completely seamlessly. Bluetooth streaming is also trivially easy; just play music on the phone and it works. The one major exception is the AppRemote application on the phone. I uninstalled it and my life is much better. The AppRemote does do a few neat things, like allowing you to control the source, the balance/fade, and set the equalizer. If I need it, I will just reinstall the app for a few minutes and take it off again. The menu system is a bit of a pain to wade through, but it is manageable. I think that the AppRemote tool is actually the only way to adjust the EQ and the balance/fade, which is a bummer because the app itself is lousy (see below). Oh and tons of colors for the display is fun/nice (including white if you are boring, but like things easy to see).

Pros: Sound quality, HD radio, and Bluetooth are wonderful! All of the things that are the most important are fantastic.

Cons: AppRemote is pretty bad. When AppRemote is running on your phone, you cannot stream audio. And AppRemote starts automatically every time you get into your car, so I end up having to wait 10 seconds for it to launch, then I have to close it. Pain. It is also buggy and tends to lock up the phone. If it locks the phone, then the receiver itself also locks. For instance, my phone locked up yesterday and then I could not change source on the Sony unit itself until I restarted the phone.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a fantastic radio, especially if you own an Android phone and enjoy the extra stations available on HD FM. The bluetooth pairing with my phone was remarkably fast, and integration with Android is extremely well done. I was able to quickly tailor the sound using the 10 band equalizer to suit my taste and the audio characteristics of my car and speakers. The "position" audio configuration was especially nice, and set the speaker volume and delay to make the sound perfect in my driving position. The single-din size and limited display area are a bit of a drawback. I set the radio to just display the source and clock, and I use my phone to pull up the artist, album, and song title when I want to know. The flexible color configuration more than make up for this. I found the access to options to be very intuitive once I went through the manual. all in all a terrific head unit for the price. Hint: If you have a Samsung phone, disable "S Voice" and you will be connected to the (in my opinion) superior "Google Voice" app for voice recognition. For example, all you need to do is long-press the volume button, say "Navigate to 1234 Main Street, Anytown Mass" and navigation will display on your phone. driving directions will come through the head unit whenever a turn is coming up, but your music will continue to play. Fantastic!

Pros: Android integration, Sound configuration, Color configuration, HD FM

    Cons: limited display

I bought this stereo to put in my dad's F150. To start, it is definitely a fantastic option for the casual "I want something better than the factory stereo" user. I personally have a double din Pioneer receiver in my own car, and I didn't understand the ease of use until I tried this Sony receiver. It's a great receiver, and it works better than advertised, it's just a bit more complicated than I would like, and a bit hard to figure out without reading the instructions.

Pros: Mic quality is Outstanding (better than my own) Sound quality is great. Looks great.

Had to replace the factory radio on my daily commuter (2002 Prizm) and was looking for an HD tuner with bluetooth for phone and audio. This unit fit the budget, had all the features I wanted and the lighting display coolness factor is just gravy. Functionally everything works well and the unit feels pretty solid by today's standards. The controls are pretty intuitive if you've used a head unit made in the last few years (particularly a Sony), but the few controls with deep menus will take some getting used to and probably require some reference to the user manual if you're used to using an older radio. Display is very legible, even in full daylight with the sunroof open. Sound is clear and customizable. My only real complaint is the tuner is not as sensitive as I would like (as in I can't pick up stations in places that I could with the factory radio). And, as always, with Crutchfield's instructions and adapters, installation is a breeze.

Pros: Cool lighting, good sound, controls fairly intuitive, built-in HD radio, good call quality using bluetooth

Cons: Tuner sensitivity is inferior to factory radio (don't pick up stations as far out), Bluetooth Pandora function doesn't seem to work with the Pandora app on my Galaxy S4.

This seems to be a good receiver with lots of features and good sound quality. Biggest problem is that due to the depth of the unit, it is a tight fit in my 2001 BMW 325., A simple install has turned into a fairly major project. I hope to resolve by removing more dash panels to find room for plugs and wires. (Crutchfield recommended using a Line Output converter - which I did not use- which would have made the installation even harder. The user manual is in small print and you'll need to review it MANY times to understand how to use all the features and navigate all the settings.

Pros: Tuner seems pretty sensitive and selects between adjacent channels well. USB, CD and bluetooth inputs all work well. Many settings to customize look and color of the display and sound character.

Cons: tight fit in my car and styling is slightly glitzy compared to restrained BMW styling. Wiring harness wires are very thin gauge. Disconnecting from power (e.g. disconnect car battery) loses ALL settings.. No connection to dash dimming in my car.

After much research, it was between this and the Kenwood KDC-X898 (3 line display) or Kenwood KDC-BT758HD (2-line display). I'm glad I chose the Sony, even with it's single line display. All the reviews I read on Crutchfield and other sites had one common thread.... CAN'T SEE THE KENWOOD DISPLAY in daylight. There were no such complaints on this one. I drive a 98 Taurus. I wasn't looking for much, but a little more than the factory cassette player. I play in 2 bands, and we are always recording our practice sessions and emailing them to each other. It's nice to be able to connect via Bluetooth and this rig connects with great ease. When I get back in the car, it's already connected (LG optimus G phone). The menu functions are not overly-complicated. You will not find yourself ten-deep in sub folders to set this thing up. Simple "press to store" your favorite FM channels just like a factory radio. Sound is amazing- and for anyone on the fence about spending the extra money for HD radio- DO IT. It is a NOTICEABLE difference. I've found myself wanting to drive around in my car for no apparent reason for the first time since high school- the factory speakers sound that much different. I also installed the XM. Piece of cake. Although my particular install isn't what I'd call a "breeze" (19 ft harness from rear to front) Crutchfield's kit made it happen with no issues. This unit has more than I will ever use. I'm very pleased. Buy it. You won't be disappointed!

Pros: Intuitive menu options and set-up. You will need the instructions, but it's pretty straightforward. I have NO PROBLEM seeing the display, even in bright sunlight. The Bluetooth functions auto-connect very well. Plenty of excess audio controls for those with amps, subs, etc. You will find you spend very little "heads down" time with this unit while driving. It seems you are never more than 2 deep in any menu- form follows function- I need to drive. Not program the next moon rocket.

Cons: The only real complaint I have- and I knew this may be an issue going in- is the single line display. It does auto-scroll, but only for what you have selected ( via a simple push of a button) . So if you want station, artist, and song- you will have to toggle between them... but then again, it's a button push. No navigating through menus.

I am really impressed with the sound quality. The buttons take a little getting used to, but I suppose that's the same with any head unit. All parts and wiring required for installation were included (thank you Crutchfield!), so it went in easily. I like that the Bluetooth re-connects upon re-entering the car almost immediately with no input from me. I just have to hit play!

Pros: Sounds great! Good Bluetooth connectivity

Cons: Pretty button heavy, I wish it was a little sleaker and simpler.

    Highly Impressed

Purchased due to the amount of features it came with and I couldn't be happier with the purchase. I really like to dial in how my audio sounds and this deck comes with a lot of settings that can really help with it. The 10 band EQ tuning is awesome and the subwoofer settings are nice. It looks clean in the car, especially with the different color options available. I haven't had trouble seeing it in the daylight and the dimming feature for night is a lot better than any other deck that I've owned. The bluetooth works and sounds great. It's simple to use and feels like a quality product.

Pros: Good Bluetooth connectivity, Sounds great, Looks great, has a lot of options.

Cons: Single data line can make navigating menus harder

The Sony MEX-N6000-BH is a versatile CD receiver with all the bells and whistles although it can be a bit overwhelming to someone replacing a factory head unit. True customization of all features and full access to Bluetooth features are this unit's strengths. The ability to control this receiver in multiple ways with multiple devices is cool but you'll probably find yourself choosing one and sticking with it. The sound quality is fantastic and super adjustable with the 10-band EQ and genre presets. If you have factory speakers, you're gonna want to upgrade to really enjoy the sound of which this unit is capable. Dodge delivered my truck with Infinity speakers but I upgraded and WOW!, what a difference! This unit is truly feature-packed so take your time and read the manual. Pick a feature, learn to use it, then move on to the next. It may be a bit frustrating but it'll be worth it!

Pros: Ultra-customizable, feature-packed, great sound presets and 10-band EQ, multiple control options: voice, smartphone, iOs devices, and included remote, 18-watts RMS provides plenty of power without an amp.

Cons: Single data display line, clock not displayed as default, no case for removable faceplate.

This is a great deck. When I started searching for a replacement radio the Sony's really stood out to me. I knew I wanted something with Bluetooth, and HD radio. This unit fit all my selling points to a T and Crutchfield had the best price, hands down!

Pros: HD Radio Bluetooth External mic for Bluetooth connection Front facing USB connection

Cons: HD Radio option seems to be stuck in "Linking" mode a lot No mute option (other than turning the unit off, that I have found) Android app to control unit can be temperamental at times No option to rotate through the "Artist", "Song", and "Album" info automatically. Unit just displays which ever one is currently set.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great deck. i really wanted one that had both built in bluetooth and HD Radio as well as front facing USB and AUX and this fit the bill perfectly. The bluetooth works as it should. NFC pairing works great with my phone (a Verizon LG G3). Lots of control over the sound you want. 10 band equalizer works great. High/low pass filters, loudness setting, digital clarity algorithm, good sub controls (though I don't currently run a sub). Has everything you'd need to fine tune an expensive sound system. For a single DIN, it's a pleasure to use.

Pros: - Lets you choose the backlight color (awesome for matching it to your car's dash coloring) - Search feature that makes use of the scroll knob works quite well.

Cons: - Won't display clock and radio station setting at the same time, but that's pretty standard for most single DIN decks - Haven't gotten the bluetooth Pandora control to work with my phone as yet, but that could very well be a simple compatibility issue with my phone. I can still stream audo over the general bluetooth setting perfectly fine and it sounds great.

The head unit also offers unique pairing for Android and iPhone smartphone to make Bluetooth pairing even easier.

    • Near Field Communication (for Android): Android (OS 4.0+) smartphones that have Near Field Communication (NFC) pair simply by touching the Android device's NFC tag to the head unit's NFC tag on it rotary-knob. For older Android smartphones with OS 4.0 or lower, download the NFC Easy Connect app from Google Play to use the head unit's NFC pairing function.

    • Rear Bass Enhancer (RBE): RBE enhances the bass sound by applying the low-pass filter setting to the rear speakers. This function allows the rear speakers to work as a subwoofer even if there is no subwoofer connected.
    • Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE): DSEE improves digitally compressed music files by restoring high frequencies lost in the compression process.
    • Advanced Auto Volume (AAV) + Loudness: This feature adjusts the playback volume level of all playback sources to the optimum level. Loudness reinforces bass and treble for clear sound at low volume levels.

Beep Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Display Features

Detachable Face w/ Caution Alarm: The Sony MEX-N6000BH features a detachable face for theft prevention. If you turn the ignition switch to the Off position without detaching the head unit's front-panel, the caution alarm will sound for a few seconds. The alarm will only sound if the unit's built-in amplifier is used. No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Dynamic Color Illuminator (35,000 colors): Dynamic Color Illuminator lets you match the head unit's LCD & button illumination to complement your existing vehicle lighting components. With selectable Sound Synchronization, the timing of the color change is synchronized with the audio source. You can select from 12 preset colors (red/amber/m-amber/yellow/white/light green/green/light blue/sky blue/blue/purple/pink), customized color (R-G-B), & 5 preset patterns (rainbow/ocean/sunset/forest/random). The unit's Dynamic Color Illuminator offers the following advance features.

    • Day/Night Color Mode: You can register a customize color for the unit's display and buttons for day & night time driving.
    • Sound Synchronization: The color changes according to synchronization of playing music. When you select a preset pattern sound synchronization becomes effective.
    • White Menu: You can display the menu more clearly (White text) without concern for the unit's other color settings.
    • Start White: When you power-on the head unit, the color of the unit's display and buttons turn white and then the color changes to your chosen customize color. You can enjoy this effect whenever the source is turned on.
Note: To change the brightness of the display you can set the MEX-N6000BH to one of three dimmer modes; Dimmer Auto (dims the display automatically when you turn your vehicle's lights on), Dimmer Off (deactivates the dimmer), and Dimmer On (display always dim).

Auto Scroll: The Auto Scroll feature allows long displayed items to scroll automatically across the display when the track is changed on a disc.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Source/Off button once will switch sources. Pressing and holding the Source/Off button for one second will turn off audio output, but the clock display and button illumination remain on. To turn the unit off completely, you must press and hold the Source/Off button for two seconds.

Auto Off: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you can set the unit to turn off all lighting a set amount of time after you turn the power off. The Auto Off feature can be set to 30 seconds, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or No.

Demo Mode: The head unit's demo mode can be turned On or Off.

The ability to retain steering wheel controls with aftermarket receivers will be determined by the receiver you are using and the vehicle you have. For full information on this type of integration (including the parts you will need) please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.[ Kenny  Dec 26, 2015 ]  Staff
    Excellent![ Frank  Nov 18, 2015 ]
Sorry I never tried it If I had to guess I would say yes[ William  Nov 18, 2015 ]
No caller ID on this stereo. I have it set to auto answer in my car. I will say that they audio quality went WAY up when I installed this over the stock stereo in my 2006 BMW Z4. It was a great purchase.[ Matthew  Nov 15, 2015 ]
Caller ID displays the number if caller is unknown (not in my contacts); if it's one of my mobile contacts, however, that contact info shows up. Mic quality - I've not had any complaints so far, people tell me they can hear me just fine. Sound quality of the stereo is pretty sweet. Would make the same purchase again if I had it to do over.[ Matthew  Nov 13, 2015 ]
I don't know about the Caller-ID, I bought this as a gift for someone else. I do know that the mic works pretty good, since it hangs right there on the sun visor instead of using the car speakers.[ DAVID  Nov 13, 2015 ]
The display does show the phone number on an incoming call. I find it to be sporadic though. It might be a setup step that I overlooked. The mic and sound quality is good. I drive an older vehicle with older stereo speakers and I hear the call clearly. I've been told that my voice sounds good to the person on the other end. Very happy with the purchase of this stereo, it has performed very well and has met my needs.[ John  Nov 13, 2015 ]
Yes it shows who is calling and the mic does a great job. I have mine in a Jeep Wrangler with a soft top so the cabin isn't the quietest and no one has ever complained about not being able to hear me.[ MICHAEL B  Nov 13, 2015 ]
It does but I believe it's just with people in your phone list. Seems like it shows the number that is calling. Mic quality seems fine.[ Eric  Nov 13, 2015 ]
IT does have caller I'D as long as you have contacts synced to the radio. You can also make calls from the radio using various methods.[ JAMES S  Nov 17, 2015 ]
Whatever's programmed or normally displayed on phone will also display on stereo display.[ Juan  Nov 14, 2015 ]
Yea it does[ John  Nov 13, 2015 ]
Yes it does have called ID, it may pull from your contact list though.[ William  Nov 13, 2015 ]
IF you sinc your adress book via Bluetooth it can. I did not set it up that way initially.[ Randolph  Nov 13, 2015 ]
If you want the clock displayed all the time you can but you have to select it out of your display options. But there will always be an option for clock. Just hold the menu button for display options fyi[ JAMES S  Nov 17, 2015 ]
My clock displays all of the time my radio is on. When I listen to my music from my USB it displays the artist name. I believe you can setup the display for each source.[ Scott  Nov 03, 2015 ]
No the clock does not display continuously. The radio had to be turned "Off" in order for the clock to display the time.[ David  Nov 03, 2015 ]
The clock will display continually if you want[ Michael  Nov 03, 2015 ]
If it has a clock display I can't find it...[ Thomas  Nov 03, 2015 ]
It still works fine as far as connectivity but if you want file play/charge thru the usb that's a iPhone thing. But you can still play all your music[ JAMES S  Nov 17, 2015 ]
I am a customer/owner but i have an Iphone. i can see no reason that this unit would not work with any Android phone. Iti s feature packed I do suggest you put a powered sub with the unit to really enjoy. 200w is enough to make you smile.[ Milton  Sep 03, 2015 ]
Not sure. It works with my iPhone 6Plus. Has Bluetooth and USB port, so you can plug in charger cable and play through the USB source.[ Dwayne  Sep 03, 2015 ]
For details on fit or installation please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and give you the details on if this will fit and what you will need for an installation in your vehicle.[ Krissy  Aug 21, 2015 ]  Staff
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The advance auto volume keeps and adjusts the playback volume level of all playback sources to the optimum level. In other words if you switch sources from a CD to the radio they both are played at the same volume level. Ex: If you were playing a cd at a loud volume then you switch to the radio and you have set the AAV to a certain volume then when you switch it won't blast the sound but adjust it to the preset level. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.[ Krissy  Aug 10, 2015 ]  Staff
You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.[ Jeff  Jul 20, 2015 ]  Staff
FOr any phone connected via Bluetooth you have the option to use the voice control thru the radio. Varies from phones but for iPhone press the center of the dial[ JAMES S  Nov 17, 2015 ]
While I have an Iphone, I am not a fan of Siri. I however think that since it has great bluetooth communication, I expect that yes would be the answer based upon voice phone book operation.I am really pleased with the unit and would buy again. RM[ Milton  May 18, 2015 ]
I Cannot speak for Apple products, but it works fine with Google/Android software.[ Robert  May 18, 2015 ]
I have done couple of these installs and they are really pretty straight forward. The instructions are clear. About the only issue might be connecting the wires - I solder but crimp connectors will work as well. Water is not a problem and the connectors are sturdy and not apt to come loose. Maybe a couple of hours to save $70[ David  Aug 02, 2015 ]
My husband installed mine. Had to buy a wiring harness for my car and he had no problems.[ Erwin  Feb 08, 2015 ]
Crutchfield's info on installation is dead-on. If you are at all handy with cars, you should be able to handle it. You need some basic tools and skills to do that. Knowing how to use and correctly attach electrical wires (soldering or crimp type wire connectors) is a must. Knowing basics of how to remove and reinstall interior trim panels is a must, but Crutchfield can help with that. Basic skill with a DVM (digital volt meter) or VOM (analog volt-ohm meter) is helpful, too, but probably not essential. If any of the above scares you, then hiring someone might be best, but guidance from a friend with these skills might work too.Good Luck[ Daniel  Feb 07, 2015 ]
I've put in a dozen or so radios and this one was easy. The install kit was good and I called in for tech support. Be sure to get all the necessary install parts; if in doubt, discuss with Crutch advisor. Good luck![ Gene  Feb 04, 2015 ]
Tony,The Sony MEX-N6000BH was easy to install myself in my Nissan Xterra. Instructions were included showing how to take the old unit out of my dash. All wiring, new molding/frame, etc. were provided free by Crutchfield . I used wire crimps to connect the harnesses, you can solder if you want. The best part was a qualified Crutchfield rep. was a phone call away if I needed!Piece of cake![ DENNIS P  Feb 04, 2015 ]
My thought would be that if you have to ask that question you should probably have a pro install it. With basic automotive mechanical knowledge its pretty easy. The hardest part is removing the dash shroud to be able to access the OEM radio. If your able to do that the rest is easy.[ David  Feb 04, 2015 ]
    Thanks I have a 1992 bronco. I'm going to try it myself.[ tony  Feb 04, 2015 ]
    Thanks William ?? [ tony  Feb 04, 2015 ]
The answer depends on your skills and your priorities. If you feel competent to attempt it and would like to save the cost of someone else doing it then install it yourself. I didn't know how to do it so I read the installation manual and watched some youtube videos of other people doing the installation in my model of car. I installed it in a 2005 Honda Civic and it took me a couple of hours to do. If I did it again it would take an hour or less. the local big box store told me that they would do the installation of a car radio that I bought elsewhere for $70 plus parts. You should get all of the parts you need with the radio free of charge, which is the wiring harness and install kit. I'm glad I installed it myself since I saved money and I also had a sense of success in doing something I'd never done before. By the way, I found the Crutchfield installation instruction (the Mastersheet) accurate and helpful. You will need to get a panel trim tool ($6) and wire connecters ($3), which I would get from Crutchfield. Hope this helps.[ THEODORE  Feb 04, 2015 ]
I thought this was the smoothest easiest install I'd ever done by myself. Every car is different I suppose. It came with a free install kit for the wiring. Only thing I needed to buy was some crimp connections, although you could use wing nuts. Took me about 45 mins to an hour including everything. You could save a lot of time by prewiring the wiring adapter beforehand in the house. If you know a little bit about tools, and are somewhat handy, it's pretty straightforward.Everything matched perfectly and worked the first time. So far this Sony unit kicks butt! I thought I would have to replace the speakers, too, but sounds perfect as is. Good Luck.[ Todd  Feb 04, 2015 ]
2002 GMC Sierra. head unit pigtail and supplied adapter could not have lined up better color for color. you basically put two pigtails end to end, plug one end into the dash and one in to the head unit and put the head unit in the dash. I soldered my connections and recommend it. I also needed a couple of small metric sockets. my dash came right off no problem following the provided instructions.[ Linda  Feb 04, 2015 ]
I suppose it depends on your car and your ability and tools. I have a kinda exotic setup (bmw) and I got a quote of "a couple hundred dollars" for a local shop to install my stereo, etc. I figured I'd try it myself. There have been some obstacles, (space is tight in my radio compartment, what to do with an extra antenna wire, etc.) but reading the manuals CAREFULLY and help from tech support will probably be adequate to get the job done. I needed a soldering gun, heat shrink tubing and a few basic tools. That's pretty much it. so far everything is working, except the steering wheel controls and I just need to connect to the right wire and I should be good to go.[ TOM  Feb 04, 2015 ]
Do it yourself , super easy with very detailed instructions. It took me less then 2 hours and looks like a factory install.!![ John  Feb 04, 2015 ]
Hi tony, initially I would have answered this question with hire it out. But after my experience with Crutchfield, I niw say do it yourself. I read all of the installation instructions and then laid everything out. Just to look at al of the wires and speakers was a bit overwhelming so I called tech support and asked for help. The person on the other end explained the process to me and then stayed on the phone during the entire installation of the head unit and the amplifier. My tech support person even have me some pointers that are not in the book since he also has installed many systems in vehicles and was able to walk me through wire by wire until everything powered up. It took me about 1.5 hours. Make sure your phone is charged up and you use a wireless mic so you can use both hands. The next morning I tackled the speakers, sub woofer and again called tech support for help. Same thing, the tech support person stayed on the phone the entire install as if they were in my garage coaching me through. My wife's Jeep Wrangler sounds awesome, and you can't tell a pro didn't install it. Next on my list, home surround sound for the house.good luck.[ RUBEN  Feb 04, 2015 ]
The install was very easy. I ran across one issue and a quick call to the tech department quickly resolved it.[ David  Feb 04, 2015 ]
it was easy to install but the set-up takes some serious time, unit sounds great[ Stephen  Feb 04, 2015 ]
Do it yourself! The instructions were super easy to follow and there is plenty of support from Crutchfield in case you run into a snag. They provide you with a color chart so you cannot go wrong In wiring the receiver and all the accessories they suggested were a perfect fit.[ William  Feb 04, 2015 ]
I did it myself , I am a handy person, but I believe it to be very do able. I installed it in a Toyota and it turned out great[ Timothy  Feb 04, 2015 ]
Depending on the car your putting in, it can be slightly complicated but with basic mechanical skills it can done And is slightly more rewarding then paying someone to do it[ Jeffrey  Feb 04, 2015 ]
I installed this stereo in a 2010 Harley Ultra Limited. I used the Biketronics install kit that works seamlessly with this unit and it was a piece of cake. Everything fit like it was supposed to and worked perfect the first time. I can't answer for an install into a car, but for a motorcycle ... no problem doing it yourself.[ Mark  Feb 04, 2015 ]
It does but you have to put the music into a folder called music otherwise the radio can't find the files. Also if you have other files on the usb it might not work[ JAMES S  Nov 17, 2015 ]
Yes, it works for me. Also it is easy to browse or change folders using the numbered button keys on the front or the remote. If your phone has a usb cable, then it plays mp3 from there too.[ Atul  Feb 01, 2015 ]
USB with MP3 works just fine for me on my Sony MEX-6000[ George  Jan 28, 2015 ]
Yes it does play mp3s directly from a usb memory stick using the front usb port[ JAMES S  Jan 27, 2015 ]
    No it doesn't. Sorry.[ GARY  Jan 27, 2015 ]
Yes this unit does play mp3's from the front usb port I have done it and had no problem with it at all.[ Kenneth  Jan 27, 2015 ]
It will play MP3s, have had no trouble with it.[ Richard  Jan 27, 2015 ]
I have not tried it with simply a USB memory stick, but I am pretty sure it will. The only thing I use the USB port for is my old iPod that doesn't have Bluetooth or to charge my phone or something.Sorry I don't have the exact answer for you.[ Randolph  Jan 27, 2015 ]
Also if you have a subwoofer and want to just use the eq for all your sound just set the HPF for the speakers and the subs at the same level. For instance, my subs go up to 120hz so I set the reg speakers to not go below that[ JAMES S  Nov 17, 2015 ]
Push Menu, then Set Sound. In those sub menus you can adjust the base level by either selecting one of the preset sound schemes or by setting up your own custom configuration with the equalizer.[ MICHAEL L  Jan 06, 2015 ]
Push the "Menu" button, under sound, there are several settings for the Bass, depending on how you have connected and set-up the bass speaker/s.[ Randall  Jan 05, 2015 ]
Honestly, if I told you I'd be lying. I'm not quite sure since I really haven't played with it that much. I adjust the base through the amp I have it connected to. I THINK that there is a way through the menu. If you scroll through there should be a selection for sound or EQ, or something of the sort. I believe it can be adjusted there as well. Sorry if I wasn't much help![ Dwayne  Jan 05, 2015 ]
I am not sure. I have never tried.[ Robert  Jan 05, 2015 ]
Press the sound button on the remote and scroll to the EQ Preset and pick a setting that you like.[ Gary  Jan 05, 2015 ]
Hit menu and then turn the knob to "set sound" . Press the know in and then turn it to "eq". It will then let you select each frequency to boost.[ michael  Jan 05, 2015 ]
