Greatest Electronic Device I've Ever Owned!!

RochelleW from San Diego, CA on 6/28/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I bought this in 2011, I thought I'd reviewed this, but apparently not. I'm disappointed to see this has been discontinued, as it's a great little "Swiss Army Knife" of media entertainment. This year my sister, seeing my player, wants one identical. She paid as much as I did for her bedroom BluRay player, which doesn't have full-fledged internet access (just apps) nor the USB capabilities for playing files such as mp4 and mp3 off any USB drive, even thumb drives. Her expensive internet TV in her living room is just as limited, compared to my simple HDTV using this Sony device. Hopefully Sony makes another player model as good as this one so she can enjoy it as well as I do mine. There have only been two minor glitches since I've owned mine, which were solved once I knew the simple fixes.

Pros: The versatility of BluRay, regular DVD, CDs (with GraceNote access), *anything* on the internet (though it does come with apps, too). I don't have subscription TV, or a big stereo system, as the apps for Netflix, YouTube, Pandora, and the full websites of audio and video streams bring all my entertainment in one device. I especially like the USB connections, as I can watch video files on this as well.

Cons: Not found way to move files from USB to Sony HD for this device, though it allows internet downloaded items to transfer to USB. Remote control instructions very vague, but Sony helpdesk answered my questions. [Fn] [1] pressed at same time accesses settings. Recently began having browser crashes, common in Chrome. Found solution on own: Settings->Advanced->Under the Hood->"Adobe Flash Storage Settings". Takes you to Adobe site which stores your Flash cache. Delete all (=empty cache). No crashes.

Great Job Sony!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this product a year ago and I was so amazed with the digital sound quality. At first I hooked the Sony NSZ-GT1 to my Sony TV and Comcast Cable Box, but later found out when playing my Blue Ray DVDs I wasn't able to enjoy the full quality sound that Blue Ray DVDs offer. So, I decided to connect the Sony NSZ-GT1 directly to my Onkyo Receiver. If you want to hear more than Dolby Digital sound then I advised you to connect your HDMI cable to your home theater receiver. You won't be able to click on the app to watch live TV, but at least the sound quality will be better.

Pros: Great picture quality and sound.

Cons: It would of been nice if the remote had some type of light to it so you can see what you are pressing while watching a movie in the dark.

Awesome Product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this as an 'open box' item, I was expecting scratches, etc but it came just like New, I set it up with my HD-VIZIO T.V. with HDMI cable and it worked right off the bat. Of course I had to set up the internet aps which took about 30 mins (I was in no rush) and played with the 'little' key board and Google search mode and found the things I was looking for without a 'hitch'. I'm impressed with the wireless connection (WiFi), it's always connected not like the older Sony internet 'ready' blue ray disc players I have, those things loose connection even when it's wired to the modem, a real pain in the 'you know where'. Not only does this unit stay connected it is a lot faster on searching and connecting to Netflix.

Awesome Bluray 3D Player/Computer

Bigriver from White Plains SC on 3/11/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Was really worried from reviews and googles about the 3D compatability because that was the main reason for pruchase...It was delivered as promised from Cructhfield and the first thing I did was the update and then tried out the 3D...Sony hit the high notes with this awesome piece of technololgy...The 3D looks great and the apps and web search are awesome...From reading other reviews the only thing I can figure is people are trying to watch 3D without a 3D TV or 3D AV Reciever which is a must have with any 3D Player...Two Thumbs Up on this 1 Sony and being able to ordering it through Crutchfield was a major Plus..Crutchfield has always been a no worry, get it as promised, best price, need help just call place to buy from and I've enjoyed doing business with them for years now. Great Product your selling with this Sony NSZ-GT1....We Love It

Pros: 3D Player, Webb Browser, Apps and Style

Cons: No backlight for Remote

Love this blu-ray player

JP from Guam on 1/26/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is actually my first blu-ray player and I'm really glad that I purchased this model. The remote is great for navigating and searching endless content on the internet compared to other players that have limited search capabilities. Love the keyboard on the remote. It was too easy to hook up using the HDMI cable that came with it. I also have it connected via WIFI. All in all, I'm happy.

Pros: Great RF remote. Has Google TV. Easy navigation. Has 4 USB ports. Cool looks.

Cons: No basic buttons on the front of the player. No analog connections.

Fantastic Device

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It was simple to connect to my Sony Audio system. I already had a network cable there so it connected to the web with ease. I like the way you can set the startup to look for a DVD or chose tho web surf first. I I like the way that it changes my Audio tuner and TV to work together just by turning the Sony Blu-Ray player on.

Pros: Eveverything

Cons: Nothing

Amazing Device

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this so I could easily download movies from Netflix or watch DVDs. For my needs it works great. I have a flat-screen on the wall in the living room and this was wired via HDMI cable to a nearby closet (the remote works without directing it towards the player which is a plus). The remote takes some time to figure out but for streaming movies, this is exactly the kind of DVD player I was looking for.

Disc/USB Compatibility

Disc Compatibility: The NSZ-GT1 Sony Internet TV 3D Blu-ray Disc Player is compatible with many disc types:

Disc Type Disc Description
Blu-ray BD-ROM, including 3D
CD CD-Audio, CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, Super Audio CD

Note: Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted material. Like DVD, BD uses region codes. The region code on your disc must match the region code on your player, otherwise the disc will not play. The NSZ-GT1 is Blu-ray region A and DVD region 1.

Blu-ray Disc Overview: Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a new high-definition disc format designed to take advantage of today's high quality HDTVs. The resolution is up to 1920 x 1080 (1080p) and the data transfer rate is up to 54 mbps. Blu-ray Disc discs and players offer several advantages over the standard DVD format:

  • Better Picture Quality: Blu-ray Disc is a true high-definition format offering video at 720p, 1080i, or 1080p resolution. While standard DVDs look very good on an HDTV, they don't provide a high-definition signal (not even when you use an up-converting DVD player). Blu-ray Disc delivers an extraordinarily sharp, clean, detailed picture, with deeper, richer colors.
  • Better Sound Quality: In addition to the same multi-channel sound formats you're accustomed to with DVD (Dolby Digital and DTS), Blu-ray Disc offers Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution, and uncompressed 7.1 channel PCM.
  • Much Greater Storage Capacity: What makes Blu-ray Disc's superior picture and sound possible is the much higher storage capacity of Blu-ray Disc discs. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25 gigabytes of data, over five times the amount a standard DVD can hold. Dual-layer Blu-ray Discs hold 50 gigabytes, which equates to nine hours of High Definition or 23 hours of Standard Definition video, plus high-resolution multi-channel audio and the added features and material that require multiple discs with standard DVD.
  • Backward Compatible: To ensure backward-compatibility with your existing library of discs, Blu-ray Disc players use a dual-laser mechanism: a blue laser for playing high-definition Blu-ray Discs, and a conventional red laser for playing DVDs and audio CDs.

Note: As Blu-Ray technology continues to evolve, new disc types with enhanced functionality will become available. In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your player. These firmware updates will become available for downloading from the Internet via the rear panel Ethernet terminal.

MP4 Playback: The Sony Internet TV 3D Blu-ray Disc Player supports playback of MP4 video files recorded on DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and CD-R/RW discs.

JPEG/PNG/GIF/BMP Playback: This unit will play JPEG/PNG/GIF/BMP still picture files recorded onto DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and CD-R/RW discs. Still images on your disc can be viewed in a Slide-Show as well as rotated 90-degrees left or right.

MP3/WMA/AAC Playback: The NSZ-GT1 supports MP3/WMA/AAC audio files recorded on DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and CD-R/RW discs. When stopped and restarted, playback resumes at the same point as long as the tray hasn't been opened and the player hasn't been turned off.

3D-Ready: The Sony NSZ-GT1 lets you enjoy 3D Blu-ray disc movies in full HD 1080p. 3D viewing requires compatible 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D emitter & glasses, and a high-speed HDMI cable (supporting at least 10.2 Gbps) connection.

4 USB Ports: The Sony NSZ-GT1 is equipped with 4 USB type-A ports (1 front/3 rear). You can connect a USB mass storage class device loaded with audio, video, and still-image files. The following file formats are supported by the Internet TV 3D Blu-ray Disc Player via its USB ports.

  • MP4 Video
  • MP3 audio
  • AAC audio
  • JPEG image files

Using either the unit's Ethernet or WiFi network connection, you can search the entire web (via Google TV) or access your music/video/photo files stored on your PC.

Note: You do not need an additional subscription to get Google TV functionality. Access to premium channels, websites and video-on-demand would need a subscription or payment to those content providers, just as they do now on your TV or PC.

Google Search Engine: Whatever you're searching for, the Sony Internet TV Blu-ray Player will help you find it on television or the internet. Whether you're looking for a channel, show, or website, you will spend less time searching and more time watching.
