Talk about trickle-down technology! Despite its modest, sub-$230 price tag, Sony's CDX-R5715X CD/MP3 receiver comes packed with many of the same advanced audio features you'll find in more expensive models.
It all starts off with the system-building convenience of three sets of preamp outputs. Add an external amplifier, a powered sub, or a combination of the two the CDX-R5715X is fully capable of anchoring an extensive mobile audio system. And you can even contour the output to best match your system with on-board high- and low-pass filters, a rarity at this price. Add an iPod or other portable music player to Sony's Aux Lite auxiliary/CD changer input no adapter is necessary.
Want more control? Call on Sony's EQ7 sound shaping. Its 7-band equalizer serves up the custom controls you're looking for, with seven preset tone curves for quick-and-dirty adjustments on the fly. The internal amp (17 watts RMS x 4) offers plenty of power to drive your speakers, while Dynamic Soundstage Organizer works with your speaker setup to create a more realistic sound stage.
And don't overlook the aluminum finish on the faceplate. It really sets off the multicolor, fluorescent display, and will add a touch of style to any interior. Just slide the detachable faceplate's Synchro-Flip panel down to access the CD slot.

Excellent radio, super great customer service from<BR>Crutchfield and shipping service was excellent from<BR>Ups.<BR>
Great item with great features at a great price if you live close to your listening market. I found that stations that would normally come in with no problem now had some static. Will be looking closer at the power of the tuner. I've heard Pioneer has a really good tuner. Crutchfield service was great!
This is a very good product. For a modest price, you can get one great head unit, that has plenty of features of other expensive models. This head unit doesn't have the movies that play during your songs, like the DJ spinning songs, or race cars, or whatever. Frankly, when are you going to use that? This stereo gives you quality in a basic, easy-to-use form that comes with a very modest price tag. Also, this product has three pre-outs, so you can build a system without having to change this head unit out for something more expensive. Overall, GREAT PRODUCT!
Absolutely amazing. A vast improvement over the stock HU on my 2001 Ford Explorer Sport. Installation was easy and took less than twenty minutes. I reccomend this to anyone looking for a good HU that plays MP3 CDs.
The Sony CDX-R5715X is by far the best value, best quality CD/MP3 Receiver on the market. Its tuner is excellent. I'm able to tune to FM stations over 85 miles away with clarity! The built-in amp far exceeded my expectations and has a clear, crisp and dynamic sound that drives my Infinity speakers with ease and punch. It was very easy to install, as Crutchfield supplied all the adapters and instructions needed, that allowed me to install this in less than 1.5 hours from start to finish. This Receiver also has front, rear and sub pre-outs, which makes it a great front-end that can easily be expanded into a mega system, without compromising quality for cost. It also has a controller for a CD Changer, XM capability and auxiliary input for an iPod. It played both CD and MP3's clearly and the control layout of the unit is very intuitive and easy to navigate while driving during the day or night. Truly a quality product for a great price with a 2 year warranty parts AND labor to boot!
Easily worth the price! Installed in 2005 Chev. Colorado, reg.cab w/Metra adapter. No major install problems, although I did have to fabricate a rear support. Looks GOOD. Sounds GOOD. More than enough power. A wise investment, that I expect to enjoy for many years to come. Teamed with a pair of Polk Audio db650 speaks, listening enjoyment [compared to stock] is an honest to goodness 10!<BR>The lone major disappointment, was finding out that Crutchfield had failed to include the mounting kit with my order. I looked repeatedly through all the boxes, it was'nt there! Now what?<BR>A single phone call to a nice lady at Crutchfield, and an overnight, Saturday delivery by UPS, and ALL is well! Thanks Crutchfield. Your a 10 too!
Wow, I am a crazed lunatic when it comes to fitment, aesthetic looks, and function. I was weary about no knob for the volume, I was weary about the slide down feature to enter CD's in, and I was weary about the display and the 'blockiness' of it. <BR><BR>I WAS weary. I love Sony products; all of my home theater is Sony. I have come to rely on Sony to offer great performance at decent prices. Sony makes this unit streamlined in every way, from function with the remote, the display, the ease of the push down CD entry feature, and the overall looks of the unit. <BR><BR>As the guy mentioned above, the Xplod feature is unbelievable. The BBE I believe it's called also revives my mp3's and I use it on most CD's for a live, crisp feel to the music. TO ME, it is unbelievable how they can isolate the singing and still give the overall music punch.<BR><BR>I have sat back in my focus, thinking I didn't want a different head unit. No I would never go back. ONE DRAWBACK, the bezel for my kit gets in the way of the push-down CD entry feature. Not anymore, I simply sanded down the bottom and it is great. Small glitch to a great setup.<BR><BR>I love it. See the period? <BR>
Superb tuner. Controls are laid out in a logical manner making it easy to get used to. It made my ho-hum factory Ford speakers sound much better than the factory Ford radio. The Xplod feature and especially the DSO feature are incredible.

Drive S HX: The CDX-R5715X features the Drive S HX chassis platform. Drive S HX includes the CD mechanism, audio stages, 12 V power supply, and tuner section. The CD mechanism includes an improved suspension to resist shocks, a new motor that draws less power, and a fast new low-current pickup that improves durability and CD playback accuracy. The Drive S HX chassis also employs advanced high capacity audio capacitors for improved audio signal stabilization. The 52W x 4 S-MOSFET Power IC produces clearer, more accurate sound, less distortion, and a higher signal-to-noise ratio than previous designs.
CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Sony for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.
Aluminum Synchro-Flip Detachable Face: This unit features the Synchro-Flip detachable face, made of strong, lightweight aluminum. The faceplate slightly slides down to reveal the CD slot, while at the same time, the control buttons flip outward. If you turn the ignition switch off without detaching the faceplate, a caution alarm will sound for a few seconds (only if you are using the built-in amplifier).
Dot-Matrix Fluorescent Display: The receiver's dot-matrix fluorescent display provides greater brightness and vastly improved readability. The display dimmer can be set to on, off, or automatic (dims when vehicle's lights are turned on).
ATRAC CD Playback: The CDX-R5715X plays ATRAC3plus/ATRAC3 files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. Each ATRAC disc can have a maximum of 255 groups and 999 files.
MP3 Playback: This unit can play MP3 files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. Each disc should have a maximum of 150 folders and 300 files/folders. During MP3 playback, the unit displays any recorded ID3 Tag information.
BBE MP: When playing back MP3 files, the BBE MP circuit recovers and recreates harmonics, restoring the detail, warmth and nuances that existed in the original recording.
Dynamic Soundstage Organizer (DSO): Sony's Dynamic Soundstage Organizer uses proprietary circuitry to induce subtle phase shifts, simulating a sound source that is placed higher than the actual speakers in the vehicle. For example, when the DSO function is used in a vehicle equipped with speakers mounted low in the front doors, it creates virtual speakers in the dash to raise the soundstage. This unit offers three levels of DSO, each with a larger and higher soundstage. You can store the DSO setting for each source.
EQ7: You may select one of the following EQ presets: Xplod, Vocal, Club, Jazz, New Age, Rock, or Custom. For each preset, you can adjust the following frequencies: 62Hz, 157Hz, 396Hz, 1kHz, 2.5kHz, 6.3kHz, and 16kHz. The level of each frequency can be adjusted from +10dB to -10dB in 1dB increments.
XM Satellite Radio Controls: This unit can control the optional XMDirect XM Satellite tuner when used with the Sony Smart Digital Adapter. The optional tuner and adapter, along with an antenna and subscription, will allow you to receive XM Satellite Radio. XM Satellite Radio programming features over 130 channels of programming beamed coast-to-coast, including 68 channels of commercial-free, digital-quality music, and more than 60 channels of news, talk, sports, entertainment, children's programming, and information.
SSIR-EXA Adaptive Reception: The SSIR-EXA tuner is equipped with "Adaptive Reception". The Adaptive Reception feature has two modes ("IF Auto" and "IF Wide") for optimizing FM reception. The "Wide" mode decreases the tuner's selectivity but results in better frequency response. The "IF Auto" mode automatically adjusts the tuner for a good balance between frequency response and minimum station-to-station interference. The Adaptive Reception feature cannot be turned off.
Best Tuning Memory (BTM): This feature selects stations with the strongest signals within the selected band and stores them in order of their frequency.
Station Memo: You can assign a name of up to 8 characters in length to each tuner preset station. Station Memos can be used with the List-up function to locate a station.
2-Volt Mono Subwoofer Preamp Outputs: In addition to the 2-Volt front and rear preamp outputs, this unit includes one set of 2-Volt mono subwoofer preamp outputs. Although there are two female RCA subwoofer outputs, the same signal is carried by both connections. A low-pass filter (see below) can be used to filter high frequencies from the signals output by the subwoofer outs.
High-pass Filter: The front and rear preamp outputs have a selectable high-pass filter that may be set to 78Hz, 125Hz, or off.
Low-pass Filter: The subwoofer preamp outputs have a selectable low-pass filter that may be set to 78Hz, 125Hz, or off.
Aux Lite Auxiliary Input: The CDX-R5715X has an auxiliary input on the rear panel, allowing you to connect a separate audio source, such as a portable MiniDisc or MP3 player, or the audio output from a mobile/portable DVD player. In the past, Sony receivers required a separate adapter, however, this unit's "Aux Lite" input allows you to directly connect the auxiliary unit to the receiver's stereo RCA input jacks.
Note: If a CD/MD changer is connected to this receiver, you will not be able to connect an auxiliary source without an adapter (158XA300).
45-Degree Installation: For flexibility of installation, this unit can be mounted between 0 (horizontal) and 45 degrees.
Wired Remote Compatibility: In addition to the supplied wireless remote, the receiver can be controlled by an optional wired rotary commander (item 158RMX4S). Once the wired remote is connected, you can use the menu system to change the control direction of the remote, depending on which side of the steering wheel you choose to mount the remote.
Compatibility: This unit is compatible with Sony Unilink CD/MP3 and MD changers. In addition, this unit can control compatible Sony Mobile Memory Stick players.
Multiple Changer Control: A maximum of 5 CD changers, 5 CD/MP3 changers, or 5 MD changers may be connected to this receiver. When connecting CD, CD/MP3 and MD changers, you may connect up to a total of 7 changers (but there must not be more than 5 of one type of changer). When connecting more than one changer to this receiver, you must use the Sony XA-C30 source selector.
CD Text/MD Memo Display: When used with a compatible CD changer and a CD Text encoded CD, this unit will display the CD Text information. When using a compatible Sony MD changer, this receiver can display disc and track names that have been prerecorded on MDs.
Disc Memo: When a changer with the Custom File function is connected to this unit, you can enter names, up to 8 characters long, into memory for up to 110 discs. After a disc has been given a custom title, you may search for the disc, by title, using the List-up function.
Auto Scroll: If the text being displayed exceeds 8 characters and the Auto Scroll function is on, the information will automatically scroll across the screen.
Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Off button once will turn off audio output, but the clock display and face/button illumination remain on. This makes the clock display and face/button illumination "Keyed" instead of "Unit On" only. To turn the unit off completely, you must press the Off button for two seconds.
Note: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you must turn the radio completely off (this defeats keyed operation), or you may wire the accessory power wire of this radio to an alternate source of accessory power to retain keyed clock and face/button illumination operation.
