Add realism to your home entertainment experience. The Sony STR-DH740 receiver puts you in the middle of the action with thrilling surround sound. With 7 channels of power, the 'DH740 provides setup flexibility to suit your system, with "front height" or "surround back" speakers adding more depth to your Blu-ray soundtracks. There are preamp outputs to connect two subwoofers, if one just isn't enough to fill your home theater with explosive sound effects and low-end rumble. And Sony's soundfields can turn simple stereo music into room-filling sound that mimics a live venue. There's also a front-panel USB connection, so you can plug in your iPhone® or iPod® and use the receiver's remote to control your music.
Sony makes it a snap to connect lots of gear to the 'DH740, so you can start enjoying its features quickly. The on-screen guide will walk you through the setup process, including Sony's automatic speaker calibration. This customizes the sound of your speakers to fit your specific room and placement, important for properly balanced sound. Four HDMI inputs provide plenty of hook-ups for Blu-ray players, cable or satellite boxes, and streaming video devices like Apple TV. And standby switching means you can watch movies and shows from connected devices without powering on your receiver. Just keep feeding it your favorite movie and concert soundtracks for sound that will do justice to your large-screen HDTV.
I very great product

Average Customer Review(s):
I very great product
A nice overall unit with clean styling and equally clean circuitry layout. Avoids that "wired by a monkey look". So far nice performance with clean sound. Love the ability to bi amp a two channel system. Plenty of hdmi connectivity. Seems a bit better built than comparable units. Nice remote.
I am technologically challenged so I was very apprehensive about ordering anything electronic on-line. This receiver was so easy to hook up and set up. It was such a relief to get rid of all the component cables and use only HDMI. I had read in a comment about the weight of the receiver in a review. This receiver is so much lighter than my 6 yr. old Yamaha!
Pros: HDMI connections. Ease of hookup and set up.
A solid performer. Very easy to set up and more than enough power for my home theater
Pros: Design is very attractive. Auto speaker calibration. On screen display.
Cons: A little complicated to use zone b speakers without using zone a but works fine once I figured it out. Would be nice if the receiver had an a/b switch like my old Sony did.
This is just an excellent product and even greater shopping experience at Crutchfield.
Pros: - Very intuitive User Guide - All connections/access to peripherals work correctly (don't get me started on other very more expensive A/V Recievers that don't 'handshake" well......yes, I'm talking about you Onkyo !!!!!!!!!!!) - very good sound quality and video throughput - Excellent shipping and delivery on time as promised - great job Crutchfield
Cons: Not a one.
Sound is great, the callibration system works well, but I had to up center speaker for clarity. Driving Energy take 5.1 classis speakers. HDMI switching works well with my 4x2 matrix splitter for output to Sony TV and Epson projector. HDMI passthru for picture quality is great. Using a harmony smart control remote, and everything works well together. I have passed 3D and it seems to work well, but I really don't have any 3D content. Hope to use 4k in future. Cons: The receiver is reportedly 7.1, but callibration software only supports 5.2 with the 2 extra speakers playing sound from surround l and r. Overall meets my needs, and allows for future proofing for 4K
Pros: HDMI switching, passthru of 3D and 4K supports 2 subwoofers
Cons: not a true 7.1 surround system
Just got my sony receiver and I love it. 7 channels and great sound and power for such a great price!
Pros: Great power for price.
This receiver is a tremendous improvement over our Sony receiver that we purchased over 20 years ago. I previously interacted with the receiver almost exclusively by working the receiver controls directly however with the new Sony receiver I am able to exclusively use its remote. The new remote is so user friendly. Although the new receiver is able to provide surround/theater sound for now we are only using front Bose speakers. Also, the manual is so very detailed and able to address almost any user situation. Lastly the purchase price was very reasonable.
Pros: As we still have some interconnecting components that have only analog connection capability the new receiver will accommodate both analog, optical and HDMI connections.
Cons: As of this writing I am unable to establish the TV 's remote to control the on/off and volume functions of our new Sony AV receiver. The receiver's manual addresses this topic but focuses on interaction between Sony products, specifically with the Sony Bravia TV. We just purchased a new Samsung HDTV and when I use the external speaker function from the TV I also have to use the receiver remote's on/off and volume functions.... somewhat of a bother but doable.
I sent up this receiver two weeks ago and couldn't be happier with this product. It does everything I wanted in a low priced receiver and more. I love that it synced to the rest of my audio/video equipment so easily.
Pros: Easy to set up. I only have to use one remote control, to control all of my home theater equipment.
Cons: None so far.
I wanted a 7.1 receiver to setup a front height surround but all were out of my price range but this unit. I have a small room 14x14' with 60" vizio E and klipsch reference speakers. The receiver was easy to setup and sound great with plenty of power for my small room. It was a perfect fit for me and my budget.
Pros: Cost and features
Cons: THD level is high.
Supports my speakers well. Only gripe is that I can't get HDMI pass through to work. Customer service was helpful and patient. They even tried replacing the receiver but no dice.
Easy to use, more than enough power for a mid level 7.2 system
Pros: Straight forward controls, lots of wattage, clean amps
Cons: I would suggest cloning the remote control with a universal remote, as many of the more advanced functions are all but impossible to access easily without reaching for the remote...
Very good product.. Great value and amnow putting out great sounds.. Should have gotten this a while ago.
Pros: Easy to set up, easy to operate. Great sound and plenty of room to attach any doodads that I have.
I have always bought Sony products. The receiver was easy to hook up and set up. I used the HDMI cables and everything worked great. For the price it is a great receiver.
Pros: Good power, easy set up.
Cons: None yet.
This is a great receiver. I have no complaints. My issue is the AllShare mixed with the TV. I like AllShare, but to make the TV and Receiver work well together, I made the TV the hub. All my HDMI cords are connected to the TV, and only the ARC is going to the receiver. This makes it easier to use all the remotes.
Pros: As a stand alone, it is great!
Cons: Mixed with a TV with AllShare, I made the TV the hub for choosing where sound originates from.
I replaced an older Sony Receiver with the Sony STR-DH740 Receiver. It was very easy to set up to my existing speakers and the audio was much improved.
Was exactly what I was looking for. I didn't need all the wireless options, the xbox does all that. Has plenty of power for my set up(Polk in ceiling surround with Harmon p38 sub) sounds awesome. All in all great product and price for a 7.2. Can't wait to hook up a second sub. Will never go to a movie theater again!
Pros: Power for price. 7.2 is great if you plan to add more speakers. Set up was easy.
Cons: None at this time
They told that sound quality would be lacking but I don't think so! I paired this with Polk audio in wall speakers which sound epic. It's a little difficult to navigate through the menus but it's not too terrible.
All around great product for the price.
Pros: Plenty of power and flexibility for most home systems. Quick & simple connection. Bravia Sync is a great feature and will give you 1 remote function for your system, if you are lucky enough to have a Sony TV.
Cons: None yet.
Excellent 7.2 system if you are looking for a economic receiver that have enough power to move a decent speakers. Easy to configure easy to setup.
Pros: Easy to configure, easy to setup. Auto calibration. Cheap an realibke 7.2 system.
Cons: A little big in size.
I bought receiver for my dad. His old Yamaha receiver finally quit on him. I recently got one almost like this one, this one put out more watts (a little over a thousand I think). Anyway, the sound quality is amazing. Felt like I was at the movies. He's got a 7 speaker setup plus a 10" powered sub. You can even go in and change things like speaker size, and speaker distance which allows you to get the most out of your speakers with this receiver. And all the HDMI inputs makes for easy hookup( just run everything into the receiver, then run one HDMI to your TV and your good to go). I also like the screw-in audio speaker connections(very secure). No static or anything.
Pros: Great sound, easy hook-up, great audio connections
Cons: Hmmm, this unit is big, but just think of it as Full of the goods.
Good 7.1 receiver with all the basics need to start a solid home theater system. The setup is easy but the menus also allow customization for those inclined to do so. You won't get upscaling but that is understandable at this price.
Pros: Good power easy setup 3D and 4K support
Cons: No upscaling
This receiver is a decent little piece of equipment. I have had an older Sony that did not have HDMI and after years of use it still runs great. I just needed something with HDMI that will not break the bank. I got this on a nice deal from Crutchfield after looking for 2 weeks at Yamaha and Denon. I had ordered a Yamaha but it was defective and had to return it and which point I got this Sony. I am giving it 4 stars just because the lack of some options missing. The Sony does the job but definitely lacks some of the options Yamaha offered me. I am however happy with the purchase and hope it will serve me for at least 5 years. It meets my needs at this time and the extra options that I like in Yamaha are not a must for the moment.
Pros: Good sound, fairly easy setup, does the job
Cons: lacks some options but at the price I got it I cannot complain
Excellent product, lot of power.
Pros: 7.2 channel is excellent when connect al 7 speakers and two subs.
I purchased this reciever to replace an older Sony Dream System, and it certainly did that! The HDMI pass-thru is a great feature, and being able to easily swap between my sources is a great benefit. The sound quality and separation is fantastic. If you're in need of a good, low cost home surround system, this is for you!
Pros: # of inputs, sound quality, HDMI pass-thru, price
Cons: On Screen menus a bit tough to navigate
This receiver functions as advertised. It doesn't include a network connection, but I didn't want one. I've got a bunch of things that connect to my wireless router and I don't need any more. It is pretty simple to set up. As others have said, the automatic set up function doesn't work all that well, but it does provide a good starting point. You can achieve a good setup by tweaking the settings manually. The sound quality is excellent.
Pros: Good choice of sound fields Excellent sound quality HDMI passthrough is helpful
Cons: Automatic setup doesn't work all that well
Had this unit for about 3 weeks now, so far it has been great. Really good buy for the price, always have been a Pioneer guy, but this unit had all the features I wanted at a really good price, read all the online reviews and they were all positive.....Mostly listen to music with it, sounds really good...played one of my old DVDs and surround was good....much better than my old system. Had alittle trouble setting up but it was because my old DVD player wasn't compatible with the new setup....that was remedied with the purchase of a new blueray player....All in all I would say this is a good unit for someone who doesn't care about all the bells and whistles of some of the more expensive units. Customer support has been good and I received this 2 days after ordering it.....
Pros: Great sound, great price, good support
Cons: Can't listen to iPod with headphones on, other than that nothing
My sony recevier was to be " Like New " My guess if was new. Everything was complete and package just right.I invested in better speakers. It was worth it. Sometimes I'm concerned buying over the internet. Crutchfield came thru with flying colors. Great price, speedy deliverly, this and including product support. Excellant product--excellant seller!
Pros: Has what I wanted.
The inputs, options and quality that this receiver offers cannot be touched at this price point. It rivals models twice its price and adds a ton of options to your setup. I've had Denon, Harman Kardon, Onkyo and Yamaha receivers over the years. This is in my top 3 that I've ever owned.
Pros: GUI Setup Separate channel allows sound in a second room if desired A good amount of inputs 3D Compatible
So far (3 weeks of use), I have not a single negative thing to say about my STR-DH740, which replaced a more expensive but disappointing Yamaha. I have Polk Audio Speakers connected to it: 2* Monitor 40s , 1* CS1 and 1*PSW350. The setup is in the basement with HDMI connections to Apple TV, Cable TV, Xbox 360 and a Samsung 3D Blu-ray Player. I recently watched /streamed the Hobbit (2012) with no issues. The picture and sound is excellent. The setup was actually pretty easy. I haven't watched a 3D disk yet, but I don't expect any issues (otherwise, I will update this post). Last but not least...I liked the free AND fast shipping by Crutchfield.
Pros: Sound, # of HDMI connections
Cons: Dated remote control
You cant go wrong with this unit. I opted for this over the 840 for the savings and I DID NOT WANT the wifi and apps on it......my bluray player has all that. I was skeptical about its performance since it was replacing a 10 yr old Onkyo unit that has been flawless. I replaced it only bc of the HDMI bypass option of a newer unit......as I dont always WANT to turn on the surround to play something. So far so good.....makes my new Klipsch home theater scream! If you want a GOOD A/V unit without paying for extras you dont want/use.....but still want POWER and sound fields.....you will not be disappointed with this guy. Sony auto calibration is not nearly as good as Onkyos Audessey setup. I had to tweek and tune FAR from what it tuned on AUTO in order to get it sounding level, evenly spaced and tuned properly. The menu is a little less intuitive than onkyos OSD, but then again...... Read all the reviews.......like I did....then add to cart.....pay......wait for delivery...then hook up your new awesomness.
Pros: All thrills no frills. excellent choice of sound fields. Includes PLIIx for 5-7 channel upscaling OSD for menus and tuner functions 5 HDMI in (4 support 3D/ 4K pass through) all 5 do pass though when unit is off. POWER!!! Crutchfield lists 90W RMS, Sony box lists 145W......RMS/MAX???......its plenty either way!!! Programmable input names for devices. Tons of sound control through EQ, effects, levels, distance, size.....etc
Cons: speaker wire is hard to connect unless using banana plugs.......but nearly all receivers are the same way. HDMI inputs are to close together to use all 5 inputs with PlantWare HDMI cable supports....I had to modify the supports to get them all to work. Video IN via Yellow RCA Plug does not output via HDMI.....has to output via MONITOR OUT to TV separately. OSD menu is in SONY tech language........takes a minute to figure out ALL the options. remote control doesnt light up
Great Sound at a great price. You would be hard pressed to find a better 90 w/ch RMS 7.2 Surround Sound receiver at this price. I back ordered this unit from Crutchfield about 6 weeks ago at a lower price. Very refreshing to find an electronics device that is NOT internet ready. I have enough internet in my home. (This unit replaced a 7 year old 7.1 Yamaha receiver without HDMI.) Easy set-up. I used the auto calibration feature. I love the 3D HDMI Standby Pass-Through feature. It allows me to watch TV or a 3D movie without turning on the receiver. Make sure you use a v1.4 HDMI cable (10.2 Gbps or faster) this is a must for 3D. If you use an Optical (Tos-Link) connection between your components then you may not receive 7 channel surround sound with some selected sound fields. In this case use the HDMI connection. There is no need for the Optical connection when using HDMI.
Pros: Great Sound, Easy Set-up, No Internet Capabilities (YEAH!!!)
Cons: The speaker thumb screws in the back could be a little larger and spaced a little further apart. Next time I will use banana plugs.
This is my first receiver and I love it. The sound is great coming for my two Pioneer dual 6 inch speakers, I have a B.I.C. America 12 inch powered subwoofer for my low and with this combo the movies and regual tv sound great! If I play my Xbox 360 (Call of Duty) my living room sounds like a war zone! I am glad I picked this reciever up when I did, everything was simple and easy to setup.
Pros: Easy setup, and Easy to read instructions
Cons: None I can think of.
Huge upgrade from my old receiver. Wanted HDMI switching and 7.2 channel without added cost of wifi and air play. My blue ray and tv both have streaming capability so didn't really need it with another component. It works great with the iPod by just plugging it in the USB port and using the remote to pick a song. Haven't used all 7 channels yet, but nice to have for future use. There are higher end receivers available with more features, but they cost twice as much or more.
Pros: Great features for the price
I am really enjoying my new receiver. It is a great upgrade for my 15 year old prior one. The only thing I don't understand is why is it designed so that you can not play the surround sound speakers at the same time of the other speakers. But other than that a great product.
Pros: great receiver. like the 4 HDMI inputs.
Cons: Cannot use the surround sound speakers at the same time with the other speakers.
What can I say took about 15 min. to set up. Great calibration for speakers, had my head on a swivel with the 7.2. All you need to due is connect the speakers and hdmi cords and your ready to go. Haven't scratched the surface of this baby can do. Would recommend to anyone looking for low cost and sound. Don't miss the wifi or Internet when I upgrade blue-ray or tv will get it then . LH
This receiver replaced my Yamaha receiver. There is quite a bit of difference with the sound quality with this receiver. The setup is easy, the auto calibration is awesome. When I bought it, I didn't look for network capable, that's what's my blue ray player is for. I have all 7 speakers connected, all Bose and the Subwoofer is Infinity and I could not be more pleased with the quality of sound and ease of use with this receiver. Great Job Sony!
Pros: Plenty of power, easy to use, easy setup and the price is a steal
Cons: None yet

HD Digital Cinema Sound (HD D.C.S): HD Digital Cinema Sound (HD-D.C.S.) is Sony's new innovative home theater technology using the latest acoustic and digital signal processing technologies. It is based on precise response measurement data of a mastering studio. You can choose from the following HD-D.C.S modes - Dynamic, Theater, Studio, Hall, Jazz Club, Live Concert, Stadium, Sports, or Portable Audio.

I would check the menu settings of you Blu-ray player. You probably have the audio defaults set to PCM, rather than Audiophile or bitstream, or however your bluray player lables the audio output. [ David Jul 01, 2014 ]

Sorry, have not tried Super Audio CD on this unit.. [ JONG Mar 24, 2014 ]
This receiver will absolutely work with 8-ohm speakers. [ Jeff Mar 13, 2014 ] Staff
This Receiver does offer 3D and 4K pass-through to keep this receiver up to date with the latest video formats. However, I don't have a projector, nor have I hooked one up. But as far as I know, It should still hook up to your projector just as you would hook up to a HDTV. Either way the sound quality is very good. And if you don't have a powered sub, Get One. I went with an Infinity PS410 8" powered sub, and it will shake most of my house. Anyway, hope this helps. I'm not that knowledgeable about projectors. [ RICHARD Mar 12, 2014 ]
I believe it does. I do not use 3D in my current setup for the receiver is capable of doing it. My blu-ray player is 3D but my TV isn't so I don't use that function. [ IVAN Mar 10, 2014 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: You can use this receiver as 6.1, but it's not necessarily recommended. DVD's are recorded in 5.1 or 7.1 configurations. If you only have a 6 speakers hooked up, it's just going to be "off" because either a left or right is not going to have a speaker connected. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy Mar 09, 2014 ] Staff
This receiver is only rated down to 6-ohms for speakers. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to help narrow down the 4-ohm compatible receivers we carry. [ Jeff Feb 24, 2014 ] Staff
Many newer seven-channel surround sound receivers actually let you redirect the power from unused rear surround channels to use in combination with the power from your front two channels. In effect, this gives you four dedicated amplifier channels to drive a single pair of compatible left and right front speakers (each of which must have two pairs of input terminals for this to work). This neat trick essentially doubles the available power, resulting in more dynamic, higher-quality sound from your now bi-amped front speakers. You can find out more about bi-amping here: http://www.crutchfield.com/learn/blogs/av_tips/archive/2008/04/23/are-you-sitting-on-a-wealth-of-untapped-power.aspx?showAll=N [ Jeff Feb 24, 2014 ] Staff
Technically both are correct, but we prefer the 90W rating. The 145 W/channel rating is rated at 1kHz and the 90W rating is rated at full frequency spectrum (20-20kHz). Full bandwidth rated power is what we use for all receivers, so you can easily compare this against other models. This is also a better indication of the actual power that you will see in your home. Yes, it have it in the menu that the receiver have. To access it. Connect the receiver to the tv and press home button on sony controller, then you can find it under sound settings. If you have any other question feel free to ask. Regards [ HARRY VEGA Jan 28, 2014 ]
Yes. Go into the Amp Menu, scroll down to EQ, and you can adjust bass and treble +10 to -10. Hope this helped. [ RICHARD Jan 28, 2014 ]
Yes, via on-screen menu settings. [ GREG Jan 27, 2014 ]
NO, I DIDN'T LIKE IT AND RETURNED SAME TO CRUTCHFIELD IMMEDIATELY. [ JAINARAINE Jan 27, 2014 ]
Yes it does. It is not a knob that you would see. You have to do through the on screen menu. [ ELITE RETREATS Jan 27, 2014 ]
Yes it does, they can be controlled at different hertz. I don't remember off the top of my head on which ones but yes you can control them. [ JAIME A Jan 27, 2014 ]
Yes, they are part of the set-up process. However, the receiver does not have Bass and Treble knobs on the face of the receiver for manual adjustments. [ GARY A Jan 27, 2014 ]
yes, on the remote u can go to settings and adjust treble and bass levels. [ JOHN Jan 27, 2014 ]
I go to the equalizer setting to adjust the curves that affects the bass and treble to control for listening to music. [ DENNIS Jan 27, 2014 ]
Yes it does. The receiver has the basic EQ setup options for the bass and the treble. I got this receiver on a nice sale and for the price there is nothing that can beat it. I listen to music and watch movies with it, and I am happy with it. [ IVAN Jan 27, 2014 ]
My answer would have to be yes. From the remote control, select "Home" button, select "Sound Effects", select "Equalizer" and adjust Treble and Bass accordingly. In my opinion this option is much more convenient then having to get up and manually adjusts knobs from front of receiver. [ FRANK Jan 27, 2014 ]
Yes you need to use remote an the vidoe jack to the tv to set balances [ PAUL Jan 27, 2014 ]
I do not believe so, I only use it in one zone. sound quality is good [ SIVANATHAN Jan 07, 2014 ]
Nolan, sorry but I have not figured out how to get sound to the 2nd zone either. It's winter so getting music to my deck is not a priority at this point. I'll probably get with tech support this spring. Thanks Jeff [ JEFF S Jan 07, 2014 ]
I haven't tried setting up for 2 zones. Otherwise it sounds great. [ JONG Jan 04, 2014 ]
You can do A/B or surround but not both. [ MICHAEL Jan 04, 2014 ]
Yes the 740 will work with 5 speaker systems, and would give you the ability to expand in the future. For information on comparing two or more models I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences and help you make the best choice for your system and your budget. [ Jeff Dec 22, 2013 ] Staff
can I listen to FM and Am Stereo? [ mas62 Dec 20, 2013 ]
Hello Celestino, I am sorry but I have not added any type of speaker selector to my receiver, so I don't have a definite answer for you. But it is a great receiver. Sorry I could not help, [ WILLIAM A Dec 13, 2013 ]
