The Sony STR-DH770 has a lot to offer the budget-conscious, value-driven customer. Got a 4K TV? This 7.2-channel receiver is ready for the latest Ultra HD content, including 4K Blu-ray discs encoded with HDR (High Dynamic Range) information. Built-in Bluetooth gives you tons of music options for streaming from a compatible device. NFC touch pairing lets you tap a compatible phone or tablet to the receiver for an instant wireless connection. Setup and control are easy with the receiver's intuitive on-screen guide, and Digital Cinema Auto Calibration ensures optimal sound. The included setup microphone measures your room's acoustics and tailors the sound to your speakers and space.
The STR-DH770 gives you several different options for setting up your speakers. Even if you're starting with a pair of stereo speakers, you can still enjoy immersive surround sound effects thanks to Sony's front surround sound technology. With seven speakers, you can choose whether you want to use the sixth and seventh channels for Surround Back or Front High speakers. Alternatively, you can use those channels to power a second set of "B" speakers in another room. If you're happy with a five-speaker setup, you can bi-amp compatible front speakers for fuller, more detailed sound.

Average Customer Review(s):
Great receiver for a great price. Wanted a 3.1 system for movies, bi-wired stereo for music and this let me achieve both. Setup is easy when online manual is used, and tons of options for speaker configurations.
Pros: Sound, number of inputs, great adaptability.
Cons: Adjusting advanced settings difficult before online manual used.
I was really happy with this receiver. It arrived really fast. This receiver sounds really good, it was easy to set up and operating it is really easy. I ran a bluetooth from a phone and it took less than a minute to figure it out.
Can't go wrong with this for the price range. Good audio power and very simple setup. Only used for a day so far and working great. Good beginner receiver or for a simple setup.
Pros: Easy installation, nice all around features and calibration setting. Powerful for a mid size room/ studio apartment.
Cons: No aux.
Easy to hook up and run peripherals. sounds great. Using it to power old Bose system with all 8 channels. wish it had a switched power outlet.
After some initial unhappiness with this AVR upon setup, I took the time to find and download the Sony STR-DH770 manual and it answered MANY questions that the guide the unit came with didn't. I found both bass and treble adjustments, how the sound modes worked (with respect to 2 channel music sub-woofer inclusion, surround sound movies/television, etc.), Bluetooth connectivity, turning off the auto standby mode and several other aspects of use that I'd been wondering about. So far only one feature seems to be buggy... when I switch the AVR to the GAME input, it struggles to show the image from my XBoxOne (which is already turned on). I usually have to reset the AVR to get it to work. It may be due to the age of my rear projection monitor; just not sure. Overall, I'm happy with the upgrade to my system at the sale price I got this for.
Pros: Low cost Feature rich Sony Manual available if you look for it online
Cons: Lack of good documentation in the box Slightly buggy in Game mode
Easy setup, sounds great. A really great deal for the money. I bi-amped my Polk speakers, and noticed a difference in the clarity.
Pros: Easy setup.
Setup and sound out of box was decent for price. Day to day use is very buggy. Turn on tv, receiver turns on, selects appropriate input but no sound. Turn receiver off and on sound comes back. Hdmi control will turn on Sony blue ray and open drawer for no reason even when not using that input. When I turn unit off it turns itself back on. Just buggy to use daily so I learned to just turn it off and use tv speakers instead. Too bad it did sound decent with blue ray and 5.1. Also many stupid worthless sound modes. Many features only accessed on front screen of receiver and not on osd of tv. Some features are not in the included instructions. Thought I couldn't go wrong for the price, I was wrong. Luckily I didn't spend more on a nicer unit I'd be really mad. Lesson learned
Pros: Decent sound for money
Cons: quirky and difficult to use dailyCrutchfield response on 1/29/2018 Bill, we're sorry you're having issues with your receiver. When I received this receiver I was more than happy. It works just like described and I would definently be willing to buy another.
I was surprised to find no equalizer or tone adjustments available to the user in this unit. So if you don't like the few available presets, you don't have any other options . Ended up returning it
Works great. Easy to set up. Gteat sound.
This receiver has upgraded the sound from my older receiver. It has the ARC passthrough for my 4K feed and the sound is crystal clear. And with the price point I would suggest this system to others.
Pros: Arc passthrough, great sound, 7.2 sound
Good receiver. Easy to connect and set up. Excellent sound quality.
Pros: Easy to connect Set up was simple
This is a great machine especially for the price. Sound is really good and was super easy to set up and use.
Easy to set up, works great. The sound is amazing and clear with my sunfire crm2's and hrs-sat4's. No issues at all with 4k devices.
Great receiver for the money. Bought this as a gift. She loves the way it looks and plays. Setup was a snap. I used banana clips plug ins on the speaker wires. I will always use banana clip plug ins, Receiver sounded great straight out on the box. FM Tuner played well as did the CD player installed with it. This Sony STR-DH770 Home Theater Receiver is the best unit in this price range for a 7.2 channel on the market. Trust me. Ive done my research homework.
Pros: High Quality and modern looks.
Cons: My 80 year old pupil needs a Tudor.
Solid piece of equipment for a decent price. I'm using this Sony receiver as an audio / video hub to bring together a few inputs and then push video to a projector and audio to 5.1 speakers. At the price point, I'm impressed how well the system works and it really brings my home theater together.
Pros: Easy to use, has all the right connector types, great price
Cons: Could be more powerful and menus could be more intuitive
Very nice receiver. Easy hookup. Very clean sound. Instructions are very easy to follow. Makes my Infinities work. Thanks.
Pros: Very easy hookup.
Cons: None that I have come across yet.
Great receiver. I upgraded from a previous Sony model because I needed 4K compatibility. This takes care of all my needs for entire entertainment system at a great price.
Pros: Solid receiver Great price
Nice receiver, good quality sound! powerfull in two chanel set up!
Great sound and great price!
Excellent receiver with simple interface and plenty of inputs and outputs. It detects new sources switching on and automatically switches over. It automatically turns off after a period of inactivity so I don't have to remember to turn it off with everything else. Works great for seven channels.
Pros: Simple interface, plenty of inputs and outputs.
Cons: Limited on screen interface. Most audio settings are on the receiver screen only, not displayed on your TV.
Worst interface I've ever used to listen to music from a thumb drive. You can only skip 1 file at a time. Sony has gone down hill since I had my last unit. Should have stuck with the Yamahas I have in the house. Much more user friendly. Plus the setup was a pain. Sony what happend, utter failure in my opinion
Pros: At least it works
Cons: Poor interface, non friendly user setup, if yer not use to the current Sony equipment setup procedures, go else where , Yamaha is by far superior!!! and no a.m. tuner, and a sorry excuse for fm antenna and the ability to hook an external antenna, do yourself a favor and buy another brand
i have 2 of these rcievers one in my bedroom and the other in my living room using the 7.2 set up and in my bedroom using the front surround feature these recievers sound great they are exceptional and worth the money i paid for both of them the only problem i have with these recievers i wish they had more information in the manual about certain features in the menu but besides that its loud enough to disturb my neighbors antime i put a blu-ra in watching Kong Skull Island the sound was so intense that my neighbor threaten to call the cops!! I highly recommend this product
Sony receivers are known to be very reliable but my dh770 broke in three days. I purchased it on sale based on my home audition of the str dh550, and my sister's beast, the str-dh820. The dh550 sounds stronger, more detailed, and overall better than the dh770. The older dh820 sounds better than both and it is 100w per ch @ 8ohms 2 ch driven @ .09%thd. Honesty, I think the new Sony receivers are over priced. Look at what you get for the price, lack of most features that are included in brands like Yamaha and Denon for the same price at all levels from there top end to the bottom. Heck, you have to spend a grand on an ES to get an AM radio Tuner built in. You don't even get rear feet, just soft tabs on the bottom rear. I keep hearing "The Sony lacks this or that but the sound is excellent". True, it sounds good but not better than the rest.
Pros: Sound is good, Known to be reliable and easy to use
Cons: Over priced for what you get, Yamaha or Denon gives you all the feature and sounds equally "excellent"
I replaced a Pioneer that was 20 years old. Just found the receipt and paid almost $400 for it back then. This new Sony does everything and more than the Pioneer did although it was great. Setting up the seven speakers was like shooting ducks in a row. Works great with my 55" Vizio. Get better reception off the air than by satellite. I like that the amp turns on and off automatically with the TV and DVD. Sounds exceptionally good with CDs but I am not an audiophile. All in all I am very well satisfied. Only the service and follow-up from Crutchfield was better.
For the price, sound and general performance is excellent! Why 3 stars, you may ask? Because instructions are nonexistent, set-up is extremely difficult, and the only way to calibrate the speakers and soundfield properly is through a phone app! Bluetooth does not work with headphones either, just with the phone app.
Pros: Good value for the price!
Cons: Instructions are nonexistent. Set-up is extremely difficult. The only way to calibrate the speakers and soundfield properly is through a phone app! Bluetooth does not work with headphones either, just with the phone app.
Very intuitive and easy setup. Used in a simple system and meets all my requirements. Nothing fancy but sounds great.
Works as expected.
Pros: Easy Hookup/Setup
Cons: Confusing Speaker Options
Sounds very good. Menu system is more confusing then some of the other brands I own ( Denon , Yamaha, and Onkyo). As others have said on screen menu system does not cover all the functions, you have to use the small screen on the unit itself. ARC function does not turn receiver on with my TV as it did with my Yamaha and Onkyo. A very good deal when on sale.
Cons: Menu System
For the price you get lots and lots for your money. If you're on a budget this is the ONLY way to go
Pros: Title says it all,
Cons: None at this price-point.
I have bought a few receivers in my 71 years, but this Sony really surprised me for the price. I am totally pleased.
I initially purchase this receiver when it first came out for my basement system. When it recently went on sale I purchase another one for my family room system. The main reason for the purchase was 4K compatibility. These units have been reliable and has all the features I need.
Been out of the home audio scene for a several years until my previous receiver broke last week. Mind you I thought it was cool that it had one HDMI input. Anyway, I found this one within my price range and decided to get it. I will say this receiver is amazing! After finally figuring out the correct way to run everything I did the sound calibration and popped a movie in. I was blown away with how much clearer and louder it pushes my Polk audio surround speakers and the response from my Sony powered subwoofer. I'm currently running a 5.1 system but this receiver is 7.2 capable so I'll be definitely adding to it soon. Very satisfied with this receiver. And blown away with the sound and quality of the product.
Pros: Auto calibration feature adapts to the room it's set up in. Bluetooth capable 7.2 channels for variability in speaker set ups COST! extremely affordable compared to other 7.2 receivers.
Cons: If I had to think of one it's be the need to have a tvtv hooked up to it to see the menu. But at the same time it's pretty cool to have that option. Truly not many cons with this one.
I love the sound and features for the price! Great buy!??
This is a very good receiver for a small footprint installation (bedroom A/V system). Good mix of basic features at very good price. About the only way this could be more perfect for my bedroom system would be if they made a "slimline" version of this unit (smaller case). Super happy with this purchase.
Pros: Great value for the money
Great product easy set up after reading the manual play like a champion clean .you can here every detail.
Great receiver at a great price! After doing the installation I did a few tweaks and it sounds amazing. I'm really pleased with my purchase. Once again thank you Crutchfield
Pros: Amazing sound!
Cons: No cons to report as of yet!
So easy to set up and the sound is amazing ! Our's is attached to our Sony XBR television set and iy's sound is awesome ! We also really appreciate the card we received from a support person at Crutchfield and their support promise !
Pros: Easy setup, great sound
If this is the replacement for the model STR-DH750, then do not waste your money. The Hdmi input card fails and will not pass signal thru, seems to be common problem with Sony receivers. On second Hdmi card and it failed again. Buy something else
I was looking for the perfect 4K receiver to go with my new Sony xbr65x930. I found it with this receiver. It was easy to connect and works seamlessly with my TV. In addition the sound is great. The Bluetooth capabilities is an added bonus. Only advise I would give is to use good HDMI cable that are 4K and become familiar with ARC. This will help you get to best sound.
I found the setup instructions to be difficult to understand. I am new to the world of ARC and receivers with HDMI inputs. I had to call Tech Support 4 times to help me get things figured out. That done, my theater room sound is impressive. The receiver has plenty of power to 7 speakers. Audio is very clear and immersive.
Excellent unit! Setup was very easy, great sound choices. Would highly recommend this unit.
Pros: Sound choices are great
Going on 2 weeks now in operation. Was easy to set up and has worked very well with our simple operation. Using bi-amp selection for our front main speakers. The newer features of this amp help with the day to day use such as having Bluetooth built in for streaming music from an IPad and the on-screen display which includes adjusting the audio level made easier. I like the remote control also as it has a flat bottom which velcros easily to my remote control board which keeps all of the remotes in one location. We have times where the power lines get over taken with wind, snow and trees which causes large transient fluctuations , many of which seem to pass right through the protective devices we buy. So I will be watching for any problems with this as this is what took out our last A/V amp.
We are very pleased with this receiver -- it does everything we needed, and is really easy to operate. Took no time to hook up and works beautifully with our older-model (but still available) Bose speakers. And we are even more impressed with the help we got from Crutchfield -- they did everything we asked, and included the cables we weren't smart enough to ask for! They were also very respectful of our price range. We will definitely be back! Super experience all around.
Great sound, 145 watts per channel, HDMI 2.2 - great receiver all around at a great price for the performance.
Pros: 145 watts per channel HDMI 2.2 7.2 audio
Cons: Could have more line outputs. But that is not a big issue.
Great AV receiver with plenty of HDMIs and power. Works great!
Pros: Everything I needed
Nice receiver for the money. I ordered thinking it had blu tooth and wifi,,my bad as only has blu tooth. So after listening and watching a blu-ray movie which was excellent ,my son inlaw informed me I couldn't play the internet and tv/rec...thru the speakers ,hence its being returned.
Sounds great. Purchase was worry free and customer service very helpful.
It's a great receiver. Has a good amount of power for a good price
Pretty good receiver for the money. Wish it had more than 4 HDMI ports and also a pre-out connection.
Great Product and very good price! Everything I needed in my entertainment center. Called to get technical help the day after Christmas and tech's were overloaded and recording ask to call back, but that is totally understandable.
I installed this unit 2 weeks ago and so far I have found it to be somewhat erratic is operation. It appears that it's internal controller cannot always remember what the system should be doing from one turn off to turn on to another. This could be that the operator (me) hasn't quite mastered how to set the system up properly. Generally the 4K video thru it isn't degraded and the sound quality is OK.
Pros: It's functional.
Cons: Would not buy another one.
The DH770 is a replacement for a much older Pioneer unit. Needless to say, it has capacities way beyond that faithful servant. My only complaints are that when turned on it defaults to a channel (in this vase TV) which I never use in my set-up; and the FM antennae is a bit weak.
If you're looking for a budget-conscious stereo, the Sony DH770 is perfect. After several weeks of reading reviews and looking for a bargin, I was browsing Crutchfield's website and saw the chat with a rep feature. That chat, with a very well- informed representative, led to our purchase. The rep asked questions about my intended use for the stereo that guided his suggestion. He pointed out a great sale that I hadn't noticed on the website. After choosing this unit, this rep and a couple of others, were very helpful in guiding my set up of the unit as well as my extraneous purchases that would make my system work at its fullest potential for my needs/wants. At this point (2 weeks after delivery), our stereo has been working perfectly. The Crutchfield team made this process amazingly easy! Thanks Crutchfield!
Pros: Crutchfield Service Price Range Easy set up Non-tech aficionado friendly Sounds great (2-room set up) Great remote...again easy to use
Cons: For this price range, I'm not sure I've found any negatives! If I wanted more, I would have had to spend $200 or more to make that happen. Consequently, I have no cons to mention!
Rating this unit 5 stars, not because it's the best unit around, but more because it's hands down one of the best *value* units around. I purchased this receiver to connect my Playstation Pro with my 55" Sony Bravia 930D. Several of the Crutchfield reviews state that this unit does not do proper HDCP handshakes and will not recognize HDR. This is absolutely not the case as my setup works perfectly (no problems with HDCP, and perfect HDR performance with my Playstation Pro games.) - You must be using HDMI 2.0a cables along the *entire* connection path. - This receiver does not automatically detect your setup - you must explicitly set the parameters. For instance, in order to get HDR, in the receiver's Amp Menu > Signal FMT, you need to set that particular HDMI port to the "Enhanced" setting (as all HDMI ports out of the box default to the "Standard" setting) - Also note that you might need to set a similar setting on your actual TV as well. I know that on my Bravia 930D, I needed to go into the TV menu and set the connected HDMI port to "Enhanced". Other TV manufacturers may have different lingo for their equivalent high-bandwidth HDMI settings. - This is a 7.2 channel receiver, but I'm doing a 5.1 setup, so i had to explicitly set the Speaker Pattern to the "3/2.1" setting (L R C / Ls Rs . Sub). Otherwise the receiver will assume you are trying to connect 7 speakers and 2 subs. Read the manual and buy the right cables and the DH770
Pros: - 4K HDR at a great price
Cons: - I've got it set up in a small living room so can't attest to the high end sound qualities.
Alot of bang for the buck with this one. Multiple options for speakers placement and bi-amplification along with perk of dual subwoofer outputs!!
Pros: Power, hook up friendly, on screen menu, alot of soundfields to choose from..
Cons: Remote doesn't have back lighting of buttons for dark room
This is a relatively simple system to set-up if you get the "right" instructions. I immediately went to the instruction book (which is not very clear) to try and set the system up. If you unpack all the paper work there is a full color graphics instruction sheet. This really makes it simple. The speaker connections are really tight. I takes some dexterity to make the connections. My only disappointment is I couldn't figure out how to set up a separate set of speakers (B) for my patio.
Pros: Good low cost system
Cons: Tight speaker connections. Limited speaker configurations.
-Summary: Excellent 4K Receiver for this price point. I doubt that you could find a better 7.2 channel 4K receiver with these features that is compatible with 4k HDR video and 3D. Highly recommend. -My Use: medium-sized basement living room AV System: Sony XBR75X940D TV, Sony STR-DH770, Samsung UBD-K8500 Ultra HD 4K BluRay. -Setup: 10/10. Easy setup, easy calibration. -Manual: 8/10. Basic only. Advanced operations in downloadable PDF online from Sony. -Connectivity: 9/10. 4 HDMI in ports and 1 HDMI out to the TV. For me a satellite receiver and UHD BluRay. A game console such as Xbox One S would be nice to pair with this as well. Good speaker connectivity options, 2 outputs for powered subwoofers. No WiFi connectivity though. -Design: 9/10. Sleek modern appearance. Unobtrusive. -User interface: 9/10. Straightforward and simple. Fine tuning available but basic. Reasonable for this price. Would like more options for fine tuning and EQ. SongPal app by Sony allows streaming and control by smartphone including some settings. -Features: 9/10. For this price point very good. 4K and HDR, NFC & Bluetooth, front USB, HD Cinema sound, a few EQ settings. Lacks some high end features that are often of limited use/value. -Sound quality: 9/10. Excellent. Adjusting sound parameters basic but reasonable for this price. High-Resolution audio tracks up to DSD quality via HDMI inputs. -Reliability: 10/10. So far absolutely
Pros: Excellent value. 4K HDR, 3D. Easy setup, auto-calibration. Excellent sound. Ample connectivity and features.
Cons: Remote not back-lit Basic manual only, advanced operations manual online. No WiFi connectivity.
Sounds good and works good. You can run everything you use through one input and just switch devices through the receiver. The thing that really bothers me is you can not listen to the Bluetooth AND be on another input. EX: You play your phone on the Bluetooth setting on the box but if you switch the setting to game the Bluetooth stops and there is no way to put it in the background.
Pros: Works and sounds great
Cons: Can not listen to Bluetooth in the background and the universal remote function is slow
Replaced my 18 year old Harmon Kardon, so this is a drastic improvement. Surround sound Polk speakers(5) plus sub-woofer sound great! It is the first time I have heard them pushed to their potential and they are 10 years old! I do not use HDMI pass through because my TV has enough slots. However, I do have one hooked up to HDMI to TV for onscreen menu. Auto-calibration for surround speakers works very well. Blu-rays sound great and video games, PS4, are crazy as far as the sound. I use an optical cable from my TV to receiver. Lack of wifi/internet connectivity was not important to me, for I have plenty of other devices to stream music. Bluetooth works great and it has enough other features that makes me happy. Overall, this was a great deal for what I wanted in a receiver!
Pros: Superb sound, great price., bluetooth
Amazing value! The features and quality could easily command 2 to 3 times the price. It's automatic channel balancing makes my media room sound as good as DTS theaters. And the blue tooth feature with the 2 channel multi selection sends my MP3s from my phone to all 7 speakers (and the sub, of course)! Easy to switch from cable to blu-ray to PS4 with awesome sound from all! My man cave is now the envy of my friends??
Pros: Auto calibration, blue tooth, price, versatility
I guess the only improvement I would suggest is being able to turn the receiver on from the app. The app allows you to turn the receiver off. Crutchfield was great to work with.
Pros: Turn off through app
Cons: Can't turn on through app
I bought this receiver to replace my old sound bar/subwoofer, and I love it. Amazing quality and you can't beat the price
Great so far, replaced an older sony unit like the hmdi connection has great sound .
Excellent receiver for the price, sound quality and options are excellent!
Great product, awesome sound and features, but set up instructions aren't clear Thanks to tech support at crutchfield, I'm up and enjoying the sounds
Pros: Nice features, great sound..good price
Cons: Insufficient set up information
Super easy to install, set up and use!
Great receiver if you aren't in need of internet connectivity! I run my Xbox One through the receiver, giving me all the streaming music options that I would be using an internet-ready receiver for, so there was no need to pay extra for that functionality. There are 4 HDMI inputs, and since I use the Xbox for most everything and have my cable box run through the Xbox, 4 inputs is more than enough! Setup was a snap, just plug in the included microphone and follow the onscreen prompts, took more time to connect all the speaker wires than it did to set it up. The Bluetooth function is great for streaming content from my phone. I was worried a little about latency issues (lag from controller input) while gaming with the Xbox, but I haven't had any issues at all. Maybe the only Con I've come across so far is that video doesn't pass through when the receiver is off, so even when gaming with headphones, I have to leave the receiver on. No big deal though!
Pros: Awesome Price Sounds Great All the functionality I needed, no internet connectivity needed Easy setup Turns off automatically when I turn the TV off No input lag when gaming
Cons: Doesn't allow video to pass through when turned off
Great reliever! Compares with a couple that I have owned before costing twice the price. Good separation between channels, and easy manual adjustments. I have found the Song Pal App to be great as well. This receiver has breathed new life into my 16 year old Polk RT speakers, and my Velodyne sub. Neither have ever sounded this good! Movies and TV are simple awesome, and music is much improved over the Onkyo that I replaced. More than enough ins/outs for 90% of users. Excellent receiver!!
Pros: Grateful clarity, channel separation. Song Pal App. Bluetooth. Dual sub output.
With the nice sale price going on, this receiver is a great deal. It competes with the other receivers in the same range, may even beat most of them. Easy setup, good power, nice sound, Bluetooth works great. 7.2 surround for the newer movies coming out with that. HD DTS is what most are now and it handles it perfectly.
Great basic home theater receiver at aN amazing price. Tremendous value. I use this in our great room for cable TV and DVDs and it works perfect. I have it hooked up to Polk Audio tower fronts and big rear surrounds and a CSI5 center and powered sub. Plenty of power to run all. Glad I got this receiver to replace an older Yamaha that did not have HDMI connections. Fast and damage free shipping.
Pros: Power. Connections. Price.
Cons: No phono input.
Not to many sound settings ..
Cons: Wish it had more sertings for subwoofer volume
great amp. great sound and connects to any device you are using with bluetooth.
Very sleek. Works great for the price.
Crutchfield had run out of stock of this receiver, but was able to have it delivered before the anticipated restock date. Very good customer service on their part. I'm very happy with the receiver and it matched well with the Polk TL1600 speaker system. It also paired up nicely with the smart TV allowing dual volume control and auto on/off. The theater surround sound works great with movies and the Bluetooth linked up nicely with iPad and iPhone. It will not hook up to MacBook Pro laptop Bluetooth. It does well playing music and easy on screen adjustments on tv screen.
I like it a lot, simplified all of my hdmi devices, sounds great
Works good, When It Works. Got the first one and it wouldn't stay on for more than 2 minutes. Kept turning itself on and off. Crutchfield immediately sent me a second one. Worked for a week and a half and then stopped showing a picture when turned on. Had to factory reset. Three days later did the same thing again. So now I'm retuning another one within a 3 week span. Going with a denon this time. Hopefully it works better. I wanted to stay with the sony brand since my tv, blu ray player and Playstation are all sony. It just didn't work out that way. Crutchfield did work with me on the price for the inconvenience. Just wish they could of done a little better considering this will be the third reciever from them in under a month and I have to drive to ups to deliver another reciever
Pros: Loved it when it worked
Cons: Did not last long. Defective product. Twice in a row
Product is consistent with the high expectations I have of Sony. Volume control is smooth, speaker options are many, and setup is straight forward. I only wish the sub woofer was powered by the unit.
Pros: Several speaker options Simple installation and operation
Cons: Sub is not powered Lacks switched and un-switched power outlets
Great product at a great price easy to set up.
Great head unit, especially for the price...
Only giving 4 stars because the box says 145w x 7 Sony is trying to over sell a GREAT product I Got this & speakers for myself a X-Mas present :} My speakers are 2pair of Polk Monitor 45Bs, 1 Polk Monitor15C (center), & 2 Polk PSW10s This receiver drives them Nicely Set up is simple I set it up in a small mancave 18x18 At 2/3 volume I can tell you the only thing I need now is a BIGGER ROOM If you need more power or features (ask the people at Crutchfield for help} you won't find them at this price point. If your concerned about this being a quality product for a good price remember your reading this on Crutchfield website You'll Never find better than Crutchfield for quality service The "auto standby " is a PAIN ,but can be turned off in Amp Menu under System I'd have liked to see options for Time before it goes into standby
Pros: Price, easy setup, clean sound ease of use
Cons: Auto standby lacking time options Had I not switched it off my system would have already shut down twice since I'm not listening to music thru my pc rite now The BIGGEST problem I have with this is it made me give it 4 stars I've been doing business with Crutchfield for over 20 yrs & this is the FIRST time I ever got anything that wasn't 5 + stars
This was very easy to setup and works exceptionally well in my environment. I was not trying for a high end entertainment system since my hearing is not what it use to be. For my needs, it has plenty of HDMI ports, seems to automatically do what I want it to do (can be overridden manually as well) and creates really good sound. The only minor negative is that the automatic adjustment for the speakers seems to be affected by the noise from my projector. As that is a low white noise, I would have expected the system to filter that out for all intents and purposes. Still that only affects me one time and the rest of the features go beyond my needs.
Pros: Plenty of HDMI, easy setup, automatically switches to devices as powered on, works well with my projector
Cons: Automatic audio setup could be enhanced to ignore the white noise from the projector.
You'd have a difficult time finding a better inexpensive receiver based upon bang for the buck. Im an old McIntosh person. The last system I purchased was 30 years ago. Children and life have necessitated a less expensive, easy and simpler lifestyle. Wow, I finally have a HDMI unit that attaches the family's game consoles, the TV, the tablets for viewing, etc. Fills a 20 X 20 den with 20Ft ceilings. It has to be cranked up but it works. The auto speaker calibration setup was a godsend as it improved the factory preset sound levels significantly and with precision. And for the price on black friday this was a steal. The best part is knowing that Crutchfield tech support is there with tremedous service and know-how should the ocassion arise. Does it have all the bells and whistles of a $2000 receiver? Absolutely not. Does it deliver basic, decent sound? Yes! Provided you make this purchase with realistic expectations you will not be disappointed. You might inquire then about why only 4 stars. I wished the amplifier had more output. Giving an RMS output rating for the receiver based upon 4 ohms (rather than 6 - 8) is somewhat misleading.
Pros: Decent sound Excellent bang for your buck Very inexpensive Simple to use
Cons: Could use more power No switched AC output receptacle for powered subwoofer.
Sounds great, has all the features you could want, but it also has a couple of things that really bug me. If I leave a movie or TV on "pause" for a while, the receiver shuts off. When I turn it back on, it seems to default the input to "TV", rather than "Cable" or "Video," which are the only inputs I have connected. Also the binding posts for speaker hookup require great eyesight and dexterity, as well as excellent lighting. Get banana plugs.
I bought this product to replace a receiver that my dad had from the 80s. The sound quality is much greater and the hdmi ports allow for more streamlined connections to the tv than the analog connections of the old receiver. The Bluetooth connectivity is fantastic and pairing a device takes no time. The simplicity of the remote makes changing settings very easy as well. Although this doesn't have some options such as wifi connectivity and apple airplay, but for the price this device gets the job done perfectly. Also, calibrating the system is simple as a calibration mic is included. 10/10 would recommend for a high quality home sound/theatre system on a budget.
Pros: Sound quality, number of channels, calibration, the SongPal app, price
Cons: Volume doesn't change with tv remote (have to use the receiver remote)
This is an excellent receiver for the price, sound quality and options are excellent!
Pros: Low price and easy to set up
Cons: None yet
Pros: Display stays on
Cons: Bad product
Not fully installed, but from what I've seen, this is going to be everything I need.
So far so good. My last Sony only lasted about 5 years which was surprising as it replaced an older unit (due to a lack of hdmi) that is now 15 years old and still thumping! Hopefully this one will last longer than 5 years. Sounds good and was easy to set up
This receiver is exactly was I was looking for in order to substitute another Sony receiver that passed away. With new features like Bluetooth and a relatively small price I think it is a great buy.
Pros: Low price for a 7.2 receiver.
Cons: None yet.
This was a replacement to an older Onkyo model for our new HD TV. Easy set-up/hook-up and speaker calibration. This unit has everything we need for our home theater, at a great price.
Pros: Great value for features included.
Haven't used it very much yet, but what I have works great. I'm retired but it gIves me more time to enjoy the great sounds.
Pros: The number of features for the price. Easy to use remote.
Cons: None yet.
This receiver fit my needs perfectly. I don't need multi-room and I don't need internet connectivity. I paired this receiver with a Sony 850B 4K TV and the Definitive Technology Cinema 600 5.1 speaker system. I added 2 additional Def Tech 800's to make a 7.1 home theater. Making the connections was really easy with banana plugs and HDMI. Setup was simple with the auto calibration speaker. Broadcast TV, DVDs and Blu-rays all sound good to me. I bought this particular receiver because I already had a Sony TV and I didn't want yet another remote control. The Bravia sync works great. I'm sure you could get more features and power by spending more but this fit my particular needs at the value price point I wanted.
Love our Sony Home Theater Receiver...best way to neatly hookup all your devices (Audio System, cable box, 4K 3D Bluray Player, Gaming Device) in one location and run one HDMI cable up to your TV. We upgraded to this receiver which is capable of handling a 4K & 3D signal when we upgrade to a new 4K/3D Bluray/DVD Player.
Pros: Great receiver and value for all it does!!

I liked the overall features for how it will be used. This replaces an 18 year old high end receiver that's not compatible with newer technology. There should be no use for that if the system is hooked up with speakers and a sub. My system is connected to the tv via hdmi so if it's spins bar is connected to the t v in the speaker ports it would be considered a separate system. The stereo has no Ports for a sound bar [ Joseph L. Feb 03, 2018 ]

You can use an iPod plugged in through a mini jack. It will not work through the USB port, all control functions remain internal to the iPod. I wouldn't have bought it had I known this in advance. [ Nicholas Jan 23, 2018 ]

I honestly do not know, as I have never used this feature. [ DAVID Dec 26, 2017 ]
It may show on the TV just as an increasing level, without any numbers/specific level. Settings adjustments only show on the amp itself, at least for me. [ WILLIAM Dec 20, 2017 ]

I am sorry, I did purchase the unit, but it was not what I thought it was going to be, and so I returned it. E. Perren Hayes [ EPERREN Dec 11, 2017 ]
Hi Randy... Most likely yes, it depends on what kind of output your mixer uses. If it uses HDMI, piece of cake. If it uses RCA cables, (red/white/yellow), then there's two or three inputs on the back of the receiver for those too. The least flexible option is a digital optical out from your mixer, but this receiver has an input for that too!! In my experience, a mic usually hooked in to the mixer, not directly into the receiver. Hook the mic to the mixer, the mixer to the receiver, and your karaoke jam is on. [ Dana Nov 13, 2017 ]
Like most home theater receivers, the Sony does not offer any built-in provisions for connecting a microphone for Karaoke. If you will be using a system like the SIngtrix Personal Bundle, yes, you can connect it to one of the available audio inputs on the receiver; just like any other external audio source: https://www.crutchfield.com/p_220SGTXPB1/Singtrix-Personal-Bundle.html For additional assistance and personalized recommendations, feel free to contact us directly: https://www.crutchfield.com/support/ContactUs.aspx [ Ryan Nov 16, 2017 ] Staff
The auto calibration is awesome. Not sure why you wouldnt want to use it. I do believe you can manually adjust it though. [ chad Sep 02, 2017 ]
Yes [ david Sep 01, 2017 ]
You do NOT have to use auto; You CAN individually adjust each speaker. [ ROBERT Sep 01, 2017 ]
You should have a "Sub Out" on your receiver. On your Subs if you have a left and right input, plug into the left or lfe or white input. [ Curtis Jul 19, 2017 ]

Crutchfield is your best resource on this one ! [ RUSSELL Apr 06, 2017 ]
Yep, easy to do, assuming you have your preamp situation figured out. If you look at the back-of-unit photo on here, in the "Audio" section, you'll see the SA-CD/CD ports, which is what I use. Theoretically you could use any of those, you'll just have to change the input accordingly. It's a decent, reliable unit for a turntable, but probably more distinctively useful for HDMI and video systems than as a true audiophile amp. That isn't to say that it's not perfectly serviceable (and more!). I bought it because it could do both, and it has the HDCP 2.2 compliance, which is becoming more and more important for 4K content (the cheaper Sony models tend not to have this feature). Can I use my crewing vegas and one Samsung center speaker [ T-Dub Dec 19, 2017 ]
No leave the crossover at max and sub in the middle. The receiver is now handling the crossover point and the sub level. The controls on the subwoofer are for setups that do not have calibration. The crossover at highest frequency and sub at mid level is the reference for calibration with the Sony receiver. The controls on the sub will still work but the Sony is being calibrated with the reference settings at mid volume and the frequency at high on the sub. The receiver through its calibration is now supplying the correct frequency and level by use of the microphone. Hope this helps! [ ANTHONY Feb 07, 2017 ]
I have a Sony XBR-65x900C with the STR-DH770. My experience is similar, but different. :-) My DH770 will read, say 25, and the TV will be reading 35. I haven't checked specifically, but I believe it goes 1 for 1 up or down. So turning up the volume would go 26/36, then 27/37. Weird, but has not been an issue for me. [ gr8scott60 Mar 20, 2017 ]
Have not had that issue. The tv I am using with this receiver is a Samsung plasma. Would make sure your tv volume is set to zero with the tv remote. [ ALLAN Feb 07, 2017 ]
I just tried it it didn't work for me. I would recommend a higher grade model then this one because it doesn't have Wi-Fi and you have to have an adapter to use with your wireless headset [ Steven Feb 02, 2017 ]
LisaLou: Yes, receiver volume can be adjusted via tv remote (or, in my case, a Verizon FIOS remote)...note, however, that my tv is a Sony XBR and thus carries the Bravia protocol, which enables all Sony products so labelled to "talk" with each other; so, I am not sure if it is the HDMI signal or the Bravia which enables this....could be both...btw, pretty sure it does not have to be the ARC (audio return channel) as this also worked on my older Sony receiver, which did not have an ARC input...hope this helps.. [ Marc Feb 02, 2017 ]
Yes, that is a normal operation. You need to know that I returned this product, because the the FM antenna -- it is "Unique" to Sony, and will not allow a powered antenna. I live in lower Delaware, and need a powered antenna to get classical music. Apart from this, the unit is quit excellent. E.. Perren [ EPERREN Feb 02, 2017 ]

It has the ability to play a pair of "A" speakers, a pair of "B" speakers, or both pair of "AB" speakers simultaneously. Run 2 of your 4 speakers to A and the other 2 to B, and select AB mode. [ Nicholas Feb 01, 2017 ]
Yes. But you should use speaker wire rated for in-ceilings and/or behind walls. Crutchfield does sell it. The connections will depend on your speakers but I would recommend using "banana plugs" or sometimes called binding post connections. I am happy with the Sewell Direct brand banana plugs but there are many other brands. I highly recommend that you add a center channel speaker mounted either under or over your TV. For my installation, I used a center channel shelf mount to hold my speaker above the TV, also from Crutchfield. [ Jim Feb 01, 2017 ]
Yes it will work with ceiling mounted speakers. As far as speaker connections go that choice is up to you. You could use use bare wire, banana's or spades. also you may want to consider using in -wall rated speaker cables [ william Feb 01, 2017 ]
Yes .. use "Front A" L&R and "surround" L and R. [ Tim Feb 01, 2017 ]

Yes, it is possible to only hook up 4 speakers. The first few days I had this receiver I only had 3 speakers hooked up to it (front left, front right, and center channel), then I added 2 subwoofers, then a couple weeks later i added left and right surrounds and left and right back surrounds. It has worked well for me in all of these configurations ranging from 3 to 9 speakers. [ Eric Jan 01, 2017 ]
I have always taken it to be speaker position. Do they sit on the floor or mounted up high. [ chad Dec 22, 2016 ]
center channel [ joseph Dec 22, 2016 ]
The system is awesome. I have Klipsch speakers,2 of them. [ MITCHELL Dec 21, 2016 ]
It is an optional way to configure the speaker placement around the room. It changes the side speaker channels to left and right front high mount. (above the left and right front listener level.) some users (like me) prefer the wall of front sound over the details of aide surround. [ Jason Dec 21, 2016 ]
I do not own an IPod, but I don't believe you can hook one up unless the ipod does Bluetooth, in which case the receiver will connect...this is a cut-down receiver, with previous features such as ac outlets on the backside removed on this model [ Marc Dec 12, 2016 ]
Yes, with a aux cable and it has bluetooth capability as well. [ Alejandro Dec 12, 2016 ]
According to the manual, this can be hooked up to a soundbar, but I asked the people at Crutchfield the same question. After getting this unit, I believe their answer to me (i.e. seems like wasting a lot of capability to power a sound bar with the Sony receiver.) [ L RICHARD Dec 09, 2016 ]

I'm sorry. I'm using a Roku for my streaming. I just run the HDMI from the Roku to the receiver in and then the HDMI out runs to mY tv [ Darrin Nov 18, 2016 ]
Yes [ chad Sep 02, 2017 ]
Yes. There is an A/B speaker selection button on the receiver that would allow you to switch from indoor speakers to outdoor speakers or both. But only one audio source can be used. You can't watch a movie indoors and listen to the radio outdoors at the same time. [ Jim Sep 26, 2016 ]
I have a Samsung TV but According to my STR-DH770 manual on page 70-71 Yes it does support Sony Bravia sync [ william Sep 18, 2016 ]
It worked with a Bravia Sony X930D. The TV remote controlled the receiver. It actually takes a lot of the menu options that are only available in the amp screen and brings them to the TV. You just have to hit sync menu on tv remote and choose device. That is the only model I tested it with. [ Cristiano Sep 17, 2016 ]
Yes [ MICHAEL Sep 17, 2016 ]
I am not sure. There is a function on the remote to use Sony devices to control each other. This is the only Sony product I own. Everything else is Samsung. Sorry. [ Darrin Sep 17, 2016 ]
I'm looking for a turntable and receiver to record my 500 albums to USB sticks and nano iPod that I have no idea how it works. Or cds what type of amp or receiver do I need to buy with surround sound playback ? And I'd like to have the digital cables and USB hdmil connection? Help [ T-Dub Dec 19, 2017 ]
No. The USB port supports MP3, WMA, AAC & WAV files. You will find this information, and more, by clicking the "Details" tab on the receiver's main webpage and scrolling down below the "Features & Specs" table. I hope that helps!
