All roads lead to streaming music

Don't forget the movies

Of course, the 'DN840 is much more than the sum of its impressive streaming options. It's a powerful home theater receiver capable of driving a 7-channel surround sound system. Movie soundtracks will explode with realism, especially if you connect "surround back" or "front height" speakers to bring a more theater-like experience into your living room. Looking for a little more low-end rumble for your large room? A second subwoofer preamp output lets you add an extra sub, so movie sound effects will make you jump out of your seat. With 6 HDMI inputs, all the latest Dolby and DTS decoding, and plenty of digital and analog audio inputs, the 'DN840 has all you need to get the most out of your speakers, HDTV, and all your music and movie sources.

Automatic speaker setup and smartphone control

Want to get the most accurate, balanced sound from your speakers? Then plug in the included microphone and run Sony's automatic speaker calibration system. The receiver will walk you through the steps, so it's easy to optimize your system to fit your specific room and speaker placement. Once you're all hooked up and connected to your wireless network, be sure to download Sony's Media Remote app for your smartphone or tablet. It's the easiest way to control your receiver's most important features with touchscreen simplicity. Also try Sony's Network Audio Remote app for quick access to your digital music files.

It was time to replace an old Harmon Kardon receiver. After research and reading reviews, selected this SONY unit. Very pleased with result. Easy setup, great sound, facilitates control of all components. Too bad it's outdated but I;m sure the new model is just as good.

    Pros: Setup is a snap.

    Cons: none.

Loads of features at a great price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was in the market for a new receiver. I wanted bluetooth at the least, and wifi if possible. With this receiver, you get both. Also, you can hook up your iPod, iPhone or iPad and control it with the remote. Sony makes an app for Apple and Android products so that you can control your receiver with your smartphone. I feel like this is the greatest value in receivers right now.

Pros: It has loads of features and a fairly low price point.

Cons: Setting up the wifi is pretty cumbersome, but worth the effort.

    Great stereo for the price!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit provides excellent sound and ease of use. Set-up and sound balance were a breeze and the system provides excellent sound quality. I especially enjoy the dynamic sound range for fine classical music and jazz. I have used Sony equipment for many decades and they just keep improving their performance and quality. This was my first purchase from Crutchfield and I found a very pleasant experience and will definitely be a returning customer for years to come. I would recommend this unit and Crutchfield to anyone looking for their first system or anyone upgrading from an older system.

Pros: Sound quality and ease of set-up. Conducting business with Crutchfield

    Cons: NONE

Outstanding network AV receiver with a sleek look with more than adequate power and features for price points.

Pros: Wireless and Ethernet connections plus Airplay

    Cons: none

Great features but lacks in user interface

John from Falls Church, VA on 1/18/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Sony product is a solid competitor for a wireless receiver with more features than most at the price range. Plus it went on deep discount for the holidays making it a no brainier. Combining it with the SideView app completes the experience and let's you run videos on shared drives directly through a networked device (mine is a 360).

Pros: AirPlay for apple devices with other streaming services for music. Solid sound for my large Polk stereo, though not taking full advantage as I have a 3.2.1 setup but would live to use the 7.2 capabilities to knock into the next time zone.

Cons: User interface is clunky and nearly impossible to use unless you know where everything is or have the side view app from Sony.

    DN840 - Almost Perfect

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver is a fantastic unit -- sound and features provide a super value. I'm still working out the pass-thru settings for the Sony TV we have connected to it. I would give it 5 stars if the pass-thru was a tad simpler. It seems that if we power-off the Receiver while it's set to "BD" for example, we can't later on power-on the TV and see a picture. We must turn the receiver back on and set it to "CATV" (for the TV cable box) and then power-off the receiver. Only then will the TV play via pass-thru. The only other weakness I see is that sporadically the Receiver will go into "Muting" mode, for unknown reason. Doesn't happen often, but it is annoying. Otherwise, this is a great unit and I would definitely buy it again. And the Crutchfield folks have been super -- helping me adjust speaker settings, crossovers, etc., for our living room. (The automatic speaker setup works fine -- I just wanted to customize it a bit.)

Pros: Awesome features, great sound -- does everything it advertises to do! Airplay is pretty cool -- just select it on your iPhone and it starts up!

Cons: TV pass-thru is a bit cumbersome - could be our settings, but not sure.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sounding player, I replaced an older Sony 5.1 surround. This unit has better sound than the older unit. The set up was a little complex but the Crutchfield support team was great getting me thru the install. I had to take off 1 star because of the remote, its complicated and the layout of the buttons could be improved.

Pros: Has bluetooth, built in WIFI, ample HDMI inputs, great surround sound.

Cons: Layout of remote, UI is very basic and needs to be upgraded.

    Great Value AVR

Anonymous from Oklahoma City, OK on 1/1/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver is a great buy. It is very competitive to other AVR at this price range. It has the most complete wireless streaming capability (wifi, bluetooth, and airplay). The wattage and THD are pretty standard. Plus THD is measured in the thousandth percent range which doesn't make a huge difference. I paired this with the Energy Take Classic 5.1 and the sound was pretty good. I came up with the combo after reading so many positive reviews on the AVR and the speakers. I got noticeably better sound by turning on auto volume and sound optimizer on the receiver. In addition, manually set the speaker type to small and crossover frequency to around 120hz on the AVR if the auto-calibration didn't set it correctly. Dial the low pass frequency to max on the subwoofer and just let the AVR handle the crossover frequency. Correct the speaker distance if the calibration didn't set them correctly. The sound was close to my Bose Cinemate Series II or better after all the adjustments. Let the speakers break-in and they will sound even better. Overall, the sound was comparable to my new Bose Lifestyle 535 if you factor in the price. The Bose won by having tighter bass, crisper sound, and clearer vocals, but the price is ~3 times higher than the Energy. The difference in sound quality is around 1 times better. This receiver is not for users that want accurate speakers auto-calibration, analog to digital up conversion, and pretty and user-friendly GUI

Pros: Great value, complete wireless streaming capabilities, modern-looking design

Cons: Bad speakers auto-calibration, Unattractive/not very user-friendly GUI

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After many years of music listening via excellent high end gear such as McIntosh, Krell, Audio Research, Linn, Thiel, B&W, Dynaudio, I decided that my passion for this type of gear had diminished as I got older and now retired into a smaller dwelling where room for music listening was at a premium. So in come smaller B&W speakers and home theater system. I was looking beyond Denon, Onkyo, and Pioneer receivers which, while very popular and good sounding , their features were lacking or sometimes complicated to set up. So in comes the SONY STR-DN840. Crutchfield had it discounted so I gave it a try. The receiver was smaller in size and feature full, such as Bluetooth, Airplay, USB input as well as more than enough HDMI inputs for my needs. On top of that, an advertised 150wpc , two speakers connected. When all was hooked up with seven speakers and source equipment plugged in, it was time to let the SONY tune up the speakers to the room acoustics which it did by itself thru the supplied microphone. Easy as putting sugar into a coffee cup. And what a pleasant surprise when I played the first jazz CD, and then a Rachmaninoff symphony and a Liszt piano concerto at 1/2 volume. The first movie, REDS, sounded awesome via Dolby B. I found that the cabinet heated up quite a bit so you need to have some headroom over it for ventilation. The display on the TV screen seems spartan when showing index items and the receiver display could be larger for easier viewing.

Pros: Easy setup, good strong and detailed sound, and a decent price.

Cons: Power supply generates quite a bit of heat.

Although this is a little higher than I wanted to spend I purchased it because of the connections composite-component. You can tell from the picture on Crutchfield's site. However product description said there were none. Then to Mfg site and it says there was. Other than that it works ok.

    Pros: Easy to use

Cons: Needs component-composite connections but then most do. There are a few of us old equip users still out there

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am using this receiver to run a 12" sub with two central speakers with 4 ceiling speakers around a central sofa area. Speaker calibration was fairly straight forward, as in just follow the command prompts. The Wifi setup was less simple as it took some time to realize how to make capital letters. The instructions overall were poor here. The sound is very nice and well done with the calibration. There is only one area we watch TV which simplifies things. The sound is a very noticeable improvement from my much older Yamaha receiver. The Pandora screen off the device is bland with only a black screen and the song title streaming across the screen. I dont see a way to setup a background screensaver. I cannot add stations through the receiver but will play all the stations setup previously. Music sounded much clearer than previous and I am very happy with the sound. There is an app and have connected both by Samsung S3 and Ipad to control volume and change songs. Did notice that you have to have bluetooth enabled to find the device and only connects one at a time from what I can tell. Overall, I am really pleased with receiver as the sound is much improved and calibration worked well. The internet apps like Pandora were a little less impressive but still functioned well overall. I recommend this receiver as an excellent lower cost device that works well and has the features of more expensive receiver.

Pros: Sound quality and self calibration

Cons: Instruction manual and poor visuals with the device's apps

    Nice Onkyo replacement.

    Cons: None yet.

    Great receiver for the price

Alex from Lehi, UT on 12/18/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first receiver and I love it. It kicks out plenty of power. The only real downsides I've encountered are (i) the lack of a display on the receiver for the tuner (you have to have a connected television on in order to see the various preset stations; (ii) banana plugs do not work on this unit; and (iii) the software/GUI are rather clunky (this has been reported multiple times). But the setup was easy enough, and adjustments to the speaker size, volume, etc. are pretty easy. Couple its bluetooth/WiFi capabilities with the price and you have an outstanding value!

    great sound

    cr from Florida on 12/15/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced what I thought was a very good receiver that was failing. The new SONY has much better sound and the TV voices are much clearer to me. I am not a tech person but the set up was fairly clear and straight forward. I am still trying to learn some of the functions. The instruction book assumes considerable knowledge of terms so I may have to call Crutchfield support. The one issue I have is that it does not exactly handle two rooms or zones. You give up the rear speakers if you use speakers in another room. I will need to install some sort of speaker switch so that I can have 7.2 surround sound in my main listing room and then switch to 5.2 in the main room and stereo sound in the 2nd room.

Pros: Sound is very good and voices are clear. Should be a 5 star rating except for one con listed below

Cons: Not really a two room receiver.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I give the receiver 5 stars. My main reason for the overall downgrade is that the instruction manual leaves much to be desired. I am reasonably tech savvy, but some of the manual instructions are not very clear and you'll have to do some experimentation to figure some receiver operations out.

Pros: The receiver has many great functions at an excellent price point.

    Cons: The instruction manual.

    robassable from AZ on 11/24/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got this reciever a month ago. It is fairly easy to use, sounds pretty good for movies, surprisingly good it for music for a HTR rather than a dedicated stereo receiver. The remote is not backlit and though it doesn't control everything like I would like it to it at least isn't a cluttered mess like so many others. I found it easier to just do most of the set up and install without reading the lousy instruction manual. The manual is written in bad English (probably translated from some asian language) and is poorly organized. For example several steps along the way in the preliminary set up stages it says "see page page 72 for this and see page 37 for that"...overall a pretty painful read. The bluetooth feature works great and there are literally tons of internet stations to pick from which is a lot of fun. This is my first receiver with Airplay and I love this feature. I just open up my pandora app on my iphone, pull up airplay and it wakes up my receiver without me having to use the Sony remote. My disappointment though and it is my biggest gripe with the reciever is that the airplay skips at times and sometimes loses the connection all together. I have done all of the current software updates and if I can't get this resolved soon I may have to return this reciever which would be a shame. Were it not for the problem with airplay, the horrible interface (looks like something from an old DOS program) and lousy manual I would give it 5 stars.

Pros: Good sound for movies and music, Has a cleaner look than a lot of other HTR's, lots of features for the money.

Cons: Instructions poorly organized and written. Antiquated inefficient interface with very dated graphics, airplay loses connection and sometimes skips.

I couldn't be happier with this receiver. The sound quality is stunning, and the features are phenomenal. The bluetooth and airplay features, along with the many HDMI connections, power, and clarity make it an amazing receiver. Contrary to what another reviewer said, this receiver is NOT difficult to set up. Granted, setting up any kind of sound system requires some effort and a willingness to read the user's manuals.

Pros: Bluetooth, Auto Phase Matching, Airplay, Power, Functionality

    Cons: None

This is by far the best receiver you can buy for the money. There are more expensive receivers with a couple more bells and whistles, but the Sony STR-DN840 is probably what 99.99% of people will need and want. Setup is a breeze.

Pros: Bluetooth, wifi, 7.2, 4K, 3D, lots of supported formats.

I have been very happy with this purchase. I did a lot of research on entry-level receivers and this one clearly has the biggest punch for its price: bluetooth, airplay, 4K pass-thru, and built-in Wi-Fi. User interphase could be a little better. Overall, very satisfied.

Pros: All the features you would be looking for in an entry-level receiver.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far sounds great and I enjoy streaming Pandora radio. The Wi-Fi connected right to my wireless router. Typing in the WEP key was a bit painfull as the remote is a bit too busy and confusing. On the receiver itself I would like more buttons to actually push rather than using the remote and I think buttons would enhance the whole look which is pretty bland. Otherwise quite a lot of bang for the buck with the myriad of connections, 7.1 and Internet capability and higher watts than similarly priced models.

Pros: Built in Internet connectivity. 7.1 capability. Lots of connections. High output wattage. Good price point.

Cons: Bland, button-less look. Busy/confusing remote.

I love this receiver. This receiver replaced a Pioneer VSX 820 and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. The audio and video quality is excellent and with all of the connectivity options this receiver is the best value on the market as far as I can tell.

Pros: 6 HDMI in and 2 HDMI out, menu navigation on your TV, wireless network connectivity, DLNA, ethernet port, bluetooth and easy speaker calibration.

Cons: The menu interface displayed on the TV could be better.

    Solid machine

DanO from Annapolis, MD on 7/15/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver is pushing 4 components and packs plenty of power. Purchased the definitive technology cinema 800 series for the basement with two existing Boston acoustic speakers in the ceiling. Have the receiver hard wired to house network as we are taking advantage of Sony entertainment network and pandora application. Basement area is over 1300 sq ft in total size and I have yet to turn the master volume north of 1/3 receiver power. All in all, great product and the bang for the dollar is there which to me equals value. Interface is a little watered down for a 2013 machine hence the 4 star rating.

Assignable 7-Channel Amplifier: The Sony STR-DN840 AV receiver is equipped with a 7-channel amplifier rated at 95 watts (into 6-ohms, at 20-20khz, with 0.09% THD, driving 2 channels). The AV receiver's Surround Back/Front Height amplifier channels can be configured to accommodate your type of home theater setup.

    • Surround Back: Allows you to enjoy high-fidelity reproduction of Dolby Digital TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS-HD (High-Resolution Audio or Master Audio) with 7.1 channel surround, using the Surround Back speaker channels.
    • Front Height: You can enjoy vertical sound effects if you connect two additional Front-Height speakers in Dolby Pro Logic IIz mode. No Surround Back speakers in this configuration.
    • B-Speakers: If you are only connecting a 5.1ch speaker system, you can use the Surround Back/Front Height amp channels as a Speaker B output, allowing you to place a pair of speakers in another room of the house. Speaker B can be played at the same time of Speaker A, or by itself. Speaker B uses the same volume control and source input as Speaker A.
    • Front Bi-Amp: If you are not using the Surround Back/Front Height at all, you can connect them to your front speakers using a bi-amplifier connection (if applicable). This provides even better sound quality from your front speakers. Your home theater setup will be limited to 5.1ch.

Advanced Digital Cinema Auto Calibration (DCAC) w/ A.P.M (Automatic Phase Matching): The Sony STR-DN840 is equipped with Advanced Digital Cinema Auto Calibration Technology which uses the included microphone to automatically check the speaker connections, adjust the speaker output levels, calculate the distance from each speaker to the listening position, check for phase, and distinguish frequency characteristics of each speaker. The microphone has an 15' cord attached that plugs into the microphone input on front of the receiver. You can also choose to manually adjust the AV receiver's speaker settings.

Auto Format Direct (A.F.D.) Mode: The Auto Format Direct (A.F.D.) mode allows you to listen to high fidelity sound and select the decoding mode for listening to a 2-channel stereo sound as multi-channel. You can set the A.F.D. mode to Auto or Multi Stereo.

    • A.F.D. Auto: Presets the sound as it was recorded/encoded without adding any surround effects.
    • Multi Stereo: Outputs 2-channel left/right signals from all speakers.

Dolby Digital/DTS/Dolby Pro Logic: The Sony STR-DN840 AV receiver features Dolby Digital and DTS-HD decoding, as well as offers Dolby Pro Logic audio processing.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the A/V preamplifier via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the AV receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

HD Digital Cinema Sound (HD D.C.S): HD Digital Cinema Sound (HD-D.C.S.) is Sony's new innovative home theater technology using the latest acoustic and digital signal processing technologies. It is based on precise response measurement data of a mastering studio. With this mode, you are able to enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies at home with not only the high quality of sound, but also the best sound ambience, just as the movie's sound engineer intended in the mastering process. You can choose from four HD-D.C.S movie modes (Dynamic, Theater, Studio, or Sport) and six music modes (Berlin P.Hall, Concertgebouw, Musikverein, Jazz Club, Live Concert, or Portable Audio),

Direct Modes: The Sony AV receiver offers two Direct audio modes for higher fidelity sound.

    • Analog Direct: The receiver's Analog Direct mode outputs audio from only the front left and right speakers without any tone or DSP processing; only the volume and front speaker balance adjustments are active.
    • Pure Direct: To further enhance sound quality, the receiver's Pure Direct mode not only bypasses the tone and DSP processing, but also turns off the front-panel display to suppress any noise which may affect sound quality.

Headphone Modes: The receiver offers two distinct headphone sound modes.

    • HP 2CH: Sets the receiver to power only the front left and right speakers, no surround and no subwoofer. Two channel sources bypass the sound field processing and multi channel sources are down-mixed to 2 channels.
    • HP Direct: Amplifies the source without any processing, only the volume and front speaker balance adjustments are active.

Advanced Audio Settings: These advanced audio settings allow you to tailor the sound to your source content, listening conditions, and your personal preferences.

    • Equalizer: You can adjust the tonal quality (bass & treble level) of the front speakers from -6dB to +6dB, in 1dB steps.
    • D.L.L. (Digital Legato Linear): The Digital Legato Linear function is a Sony proprietary technology that allows low quality digital audio signals and analog audio signal to be played back with high quality sound.
    • Sound Optimizer: The Sound Optimizer lets you enjoy clear and dynamic sound at low volume levels. It automatically calibrates the sound which cannot be heard well when you turn down the volume level. After Auto Calibration is performed, the sound level is optimized to suit your environment.
    • Dynamic Range Compressor: This feature allows you to compress the dynamic range of the sound track. You can select standard or maximum compression, or off (only works with Dolby Digital sources).
    • Auto Volume: Auto Volume adjust the volume automatically depending on the input signal or content from the connected equipment. This function is useful, for example, when the sound of a commercial is louder than the TV programs.
    • Center Lift Up: By using front high speakers, you can lift up the sounds of the center speaker to an appropriate height on the screen, allowing you to enjoy a more natural representation.

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Sony STR-DN840 offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

    • Digital Inputs: The receiver has two optical digital inputs and one coaxial digital inputs (all assignable). You can choose auto decoding or PCM for the digital audio inputs. Auto will decode the signal in its original form (Dolby Digital, DTS, PCM, etc), PCM decodes the signal to 2-channel.
    • Speaker Outputs: The receiver is equipped with binding post terminals for all speaker channels. The binding post terminals will accept bare wire, pin connectors, and banana plugs (single only). Use speakers with a 6- to 16-ohm impedance.
    • Dual Sub Outputs: The AV receiver is fitted with two subwoofer preamp outputs to connect dual powered subs.
    • Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted. No sound is output from the headphones when iPod or iPhone is connected to the receiver.

    Video Section

6 HDMI (v.1.4) Inputs: The receiver is equipped with six HDMI (v.1.4) inputs for connecting HDMI-equipped audio/video component; such as your satellite/cable receiver, Blu-ray/DVD player, and game system. It also allows you to connect all of your devices to your TV with a single HDMI cable (via its ARC-compatible HDMI monitor output), reducing cable clutter. The receiver's HDMI v.1.4 jacks are compatible with 1080p/24Hz and 4K video, 3D video signals, Deep Color & x.v.Color technology; as well as LipSync, ARC, and HDMI control.

    • 4K Pass-Through: 4K Pass Through allows the Sony STR-DN840 to receive super high-definition resolution video and pass the video signal to a 4K compatible TV or display monitor. This ensures compatibility with the latest super high resolution video formats.
    • 3D-Ready: The Sony STR-DN840 is compatible with 3D-ready Blu-ray disc movies, video games, and other 3D content through its HDMI (v.1.4) connections. 3D viewing requires 3D-ready source with 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D glasses, and high-speed HDMI cable. Other 3D accessories may also be needed.
    • Deep/x.v.Color Support: The Sony AV receiver also supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture.
    • A/V Sync: The audio output can be delayed so that the time gap between the audio output and the visual display is minimized. This is especially helpful when you are using a large LCD or plasma TV or a projection TV. When activated, the delay can be adjusted from 0-300 ms or set to Auto.
    • ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.

24p True Cinema Mode: The 24p True Cinema Mode allows you to watch movies at their native frame rate 24p format (24 frames per second) when paired with a 24p playback device like a Blu-ray Disc Player.

HDMI Standby Pass-Through: The HDMI Standby Pass-Through feature conveniently allows you to access all your HDMI connected devices without having to power on the receiver .

HDMI Preview: This feature provides a live picture-in-picture preview on your HDMI-connected TV of HDMI inputs connected to the receiver. HDMI Preview is not compatible with 4K and 3D video signals.

Composite Video Inputs: The Sony STR-DN840 is also fitted with two analog composite video inputs and one composite video monitor output. The composite video jacks support 480i video signals only.

RCA outs on the 840 are probably line level output. Binding posts generally imply an amplified input/output. If your sub requires an amplified signal chances are that the 840 will not power them. If your sub is powered, then all you to do is use a RCA cable and strip back the opposite end and put the center post wire to the (+) post of the sub and the other to (-) post. Obviously if the sub does not have any volume it's probably not powered and requires a separate amp. Hope this helps. I am not a technician, just so you know! [ Lonnie  Feb 03, 2014 ]
I am sorry but I have not installed it yet. It is still in the box due to renovation in my appt. Sorry that I can't help. [ MOSHE  Feb 02, 2014 ]
Standard a/v cord worked for me. Stripped off the video cord and plugged the left/right in with no problem [ RICHARD  Feb 01, 2014 ]
If your subwoofer is a powered sub, you take the front right or front left output on the receiver to the sub binding posts and then from the sub binding posts to the appropriate speaker. [ LANDON M  Feb 01, 2014 ]
How many DVD's this unit holds? I have no tech experience to answer your question. Sorry..... [ JEROME  Jan 11, 2014 ]
I run my Sony Blue Ray via the HDMI. I have a separate Sony SACD component that I run through the optical outlet. I am using Energy and Mirage speakers for my setup. I have played SACD's and regular digital CD's through both the Blue Ray and SACD components, and really find that the speakers handle SACD signal quite well, although the SACD's are quite limited in supply for purchase and more expensive. There are a few minor differences between the units. The 1040 has a couple more inputs, video upconversion, slightly more power, and 2nd room output. The importance of these features will depend on what you are connecting the receiver to. A quick phone call or online chat with an Advisor will help figure which of these will be best for you. [ Jeff  Dec 11, 2013 ]  Staff
Unfortunately, your subwoofer with push pin inputs requires a 'high level' input such as true speaker wire connection. The sub woofer output of the Sony unit is 'low level' RCA connection and does not have the power to send the audio to your sub woofer. The only thing you could do is tap (parallel) off the speaker wires and use the sub woofer contra to adjust the crossover point and levels. You would also need to set the Sony receiver so the front or center speaker(a) you tap into are 'full' range so that all of the bass audio is included in these speakers, otherwise no bass audio will be present and the sub woofer won't work.
