It's a common problem: your main music-listening system is in your TV or living room. But you've got a computer loaded with music sitting in another room. Isn't there a way to get them together without moving your computer and connecting it to your receiver? There's a simple solution: the Sony STR-DN850. It's a seven-channel home theater receiver, so it can power a surround sound system. And it also offers several ways to play music wirelessly from your computer, smartphone, and tablet. Plus, you get automatic speaker calibration, plenty of inputs for wired sources like Blu-ray players and cable boxes, and an easy-to-use on-screen interface to get started.
By equipping the STR-DN850 with built-in Wi-Fi, Sony ensures the quickest, easiest connection to your home network. Once you're connected, you'll free all those digital music files from your computer or network storage device. If you're an iTunes® user, Apple AirPlay makes it easy to stream all your digital tunes wirelessly from your networked computer, as well as an iPhone®, iPod touch® or iPad®. Want to satisfy your thirst for new music? Listen to free Internet radio stations from around the world with TuneIn, or let Pandora® create a custom station just for you. Spotify® subscribers can play nearly any song they can think of using the app on their smartphone or tablet. The 'DN850 also has built-in Bluetooth, so you can listen to audio from any app on your smartphone or tablet through your home theater speakers.
Even without a networked computer, there are cool options for enjoying digital music with the STR-DN850. There's a front-panel USB port for connecting an iPhone®, iPad®, or iPod®. Plug it in and control it with the receiver's remote, so you can listen to your digital music collection while your device charges. For Android™ users, there's a front-panel MHL port. It's an HDMI input that can take video, photos, and music from compatible phones and tablets and show them on the big screen and play them through your surround speakers. If you have any high-resolution downloads from sites like HDtracks, load them onto a USB memory drive and plug it into the USB port. This receiver can play high-res recordings with up to 24-bit/192kHz resolution, for greater detail and depth than CDs can deliver.
What else does this versatile receiver offer? Digital Cinema Auto Calibration configures your speakers for optimum sound. Just plug in the included setup mic and follow the on-screen instructions for sound tailored to your room and speakers. Once you're set up, you'll enjoy pristine 1080p HD video quality, even from older sources like DVD players thanks to HD (and Ultra HD for new 4K TVs) upscaling. Thanks to built-in Wi-Fi, you have a special remote to control your system: your smartphone. Download Sony's free SongPal app to your Apple or Android device for easy Wi-Fi control of the receiver.

This receiver does everything the ad claimed it would do. And, the price was very reasonable.
Just hooked up the reciever and I am very happy with the sound quality and ease of using, it works great with our Sony TV too.
Pros: Like the ease of the remote control, set the AM/FM channels easily. Like being able to hook my Iphone or Ipod to the reciever too.
Cons: I had to download the manual, almost 400 pages.
Nice home theater receiver, I haven't figured it all out yet, but set-up was simple. Easy on screen directions take you step by step on setup.
Pros: Simple, yet very capable of most needs.
Cons: Lightweight, this is much lighter than my complicated AVENTAGE, makes me worry about the lack of good components inside. Time will tell. No indicator light that 5.1 or 7.2 is active. Not really a con, but I liked my 5.1 light on the old receiver.
Unit was purchased to replace 15 year old Denon receiver that lacked current updated technology and connections. Plenty of features at an exceptional price point.
Pros: Price, Versatility, Power
Cons: No user manual includedCrutchfield response on 6/23/2015 These days, many manufacturers don't include an owner's manual in the box. They either include it on a disc or send you to their website to download it. You can also find it on our website. On the receiver's web page, click on the "Details" tab. At the top of that tab, you'll see "What's in the box?". The first item appearing in the "What's in the box?" box is a link to the owner's manual. You can view it in your browser or download it to your computer.
I bought this unit to get all of the wireless / Bluetooth features it had available. Also since it was going to be in the garage, I wanted Sony reliability. Easy connection to my wireless network, easy connection to Bluetooth devices. This receiver sits in the garage and drives my Klipsch speakers in the outdoor kitchen between the garage and house. The SongPal app does everything, no need to use the receiver remote or the controls on the receiver. Airplay works great from iPhones or from my desktop PC with iTunes in the house. Bluetooth from our phones works great. I also will be using another feature in the near future, by hooking up a second set of speakers in the garage to the surround channels that can act as a "B" speaker set, so I can have music in the garage as well. The other nice feature I didn't realize it had is that once the source has stopped sending signal to the receiver (wireless or Bluetooth) the receiver goes back to standby mode. We never have to touch the receiver to use all of its functionality. I am very happy with this unit.
Pros: Versatile choices for wireless/Bluetooth/Airplay. Completely controllable without touching unit.
Cons: None so far.
I had only owned Onkyo receivers for 15 years before this purchase but when the last one had heat source and circuit issues 3 years in and then total went in year 5, it was time to go in a different direction. Setup was easy and sound quality is good. Integration with other devices is relatively seamless. We are still in the early days but for the money it seems like a high functioning and quality piece of A/V equipment. It is a bit touchy with the cable input and goes into this weird mutting on/off mode if the turn of sequence is not correct but this is easily avoided and likely an input issue rather than the receivers issue.
Pros: Easy setup and integration Cost
Cons: Air play can drop easily
I have had the receiver for about a month in a half and it works great
Pros: It works well with my Samsung smart tv, play station and cable box.Connecting everything was easy because of the one hdmi for the tv and everything else went to the receiver
Cons: I didn't understand how the pandora work when you have a smart tv and both are wireless.I would like a better manual for clear instructions for connecting to the hub but I can say customer service walk me through everything with no problem
Dollar for dollar you'd be hard pressed to find another receiver with this many features and sound this good for the same price. Set up was easy, despite no owners manual in the box. The sound is so much better than the Yamaha I upgraded from at around the same price. This unit also uses much less power and has a lot more features. Very satisfied with my purchase.
Pros: Sound quality, features, number and type of available connections.
Cons: No 120 volt switched outlet on the back. No owners manual.
Easy to set up and met all expectations.
Great so far. Wifi is rock solid and I love using it with Spotify from my phone (surprised how good this sounds). Plenty of power for my moderate size living room, no need to turn it up that much if you want to rock the house or listen to a movie. Simple to run and connects well with all my devices. I have Sony TV and Panasonic Blu-ray and it works seamlessly with both. Haven't used the equalizer, but setting the speaker calibration through the unit made other adjustments unnecessary in my case. I only use 5.1 sound/speakers so can't say anything about 7.2 features and haven't tried Apple AirPlay yet. Crutchfield answered my question about Spotify quickly and got me going in the right direction.
Pros: Plenty of Power Ease of use Wifi/Bluetooth solid
Cons: Wonder if at some point I will miss the lack of HDMI input from the front?... Not so far....
Seems like a good unit, but I couldn't get AirPlay to connect with the unit turned off. I know it sounds picky but I know of a Yamaha unit that does just that, it will show up on AirPlay, you select it and the unit powers on and connects. Again, not so with the Sony. Something that would have bothered me so I returned for refund.
a very good product, I mean it is nasty . It runs everything in the house ,rock the house...!
This is a great mid-range AV receiver. Mine is configured as 5.1 with the front speakers bi-amped. The WiFi works great and has never even hicupped. The Air Play gives me the ability to play my entire music library remotely from my PC. I get good clean sound through my Polk speakers all the way up through and beyond the "call the cops volume". I would highly recommend this receiver if all your components are digital connections.
Pros: Sounds Great. Plenty of power. WiFi is rock solid. AIr Play is a big plus. Bluetooth works with all of my devices.
Cons: The automated setup always sets my fronts (RTi A3) as large speakers. So I have to go in and manually set them to small so that I can direct the frequencies that they can't handle to the sub-woofer. WIth a sub-woofer in the system, the automatic setup should never set any bookshelf speaker to large, IMHO. But you usually tweak the automatic setup anyways.
This receiver is great, it has definitely fulfilled my expectations. We recently updated our whole system to hdmi and this was a perfect mid-level purchase, quite pleased. Very easy to operate.
Pros: The whole Crutchfield team here is incredible. I was having trouble getting my tv sounds through the surround sound and they helped me make it happen, less than 10 minutes! Having them as a backup is worth purchasing through Crutchfield!
My last receiver began to die and was emitting a horrible high pitch noise from its center channel. I began researching new receivers for a few weeks and found this one on sale during the Christmas holiday. Installation was extremely straight forward and only took about fifteen minutes to remove and replace the old unit. Upon powering up this new unit you see an on screen display that easily walks you through the steps to set up wifi, speaker calibration, etc. I must admit the speaker calibration did not correctly set up speaker size and distance for my system. I have Polk Audio TL2 front and rear, Polk Audio CS10 center and Klipsch SW-350 Sub in the living room size of 14.5ft x 19ft. Regardless of the incorrect calibration the system sounds amazing. I easily corrected the size and distance errors and couldn't be happier. I've had no issues with HDMI problems as some have stated. Also, I've not yet updated the firmware as I've had no justification to do so. As a computer geek I've learned never to update a BIOS unless there is a problem that needs to be fixed. I'm a happy customer thus far.
Pros: Simple setup, on screen display, excellent sound, simple to select sound options for movies, CD's, MP3's, radio, etc.
Cons: Calibration errors.
Great price, but I was disappointed in performance. I bought this because of the CNET review--best AVR for the price, however, after a few days of use, the pictures wouldn't display on my TV. Sound was all you could hear. I returned it and got my money back. Since i purchased this receiver, I've read many personal review and learned that many of the lower priced receivers have the same problem. I'm having trouble deciding what to buy, but I'm afraid I'm going to need to spend quite a bit more so that HDMI connection will provide picture and sound.
Cons: HDMI wouldn't display pic and produce sound. I also couldn't connect to wifi.
Finally had to update my Sony STR-DE985 that I purchased from Cruthfield back in 2003.. Routing all of my HDMI output equipment thru this receiver ( and not directly to our TV ) has sure made operating my system much simpler and faster. The remote is so well designed even my very non techy wife has already learned how to use it... .
Pros: Great sound out of my Boes 5.1 surround system. Setting up the speakers out put levels vs listening positions was a snap and I had the whole system up and running perfectly very quickly.
Cons: I did not realize the 7.2 surround capability could not be utilized to drive my 6.1 surround speaker set up ( that I was able to drive with my STR-DE985 ) and still run my B speakers that are outside on our deck.. My rear center surround speaker had to be disconnected. The 5.1 surround is very adequate and still sounds great so not a big deal. Sony needs to provide more information on the correct web site to go to for the necessary registration process required to connect to Pandora.
Easy setup, great sound, great price!
Pros: So easy to setup with the on screen setup. Much easier to setup than my old Yamaha, and with a $100 off, its a no brainer.
We received this on Tuesday after ordering on Saturday. Wonderful shipping time. It was replacing another unit. Easy to setup. Only one problem. Called customer service and was helped immediately by tech support. We followed his suggestion and unit is working very well. Great sound quality.
Tons of features, and great sound. Now I need better speakers
Pros: Multiple methods to connect devices. AirPlay, USB support of Hi res flac files.
Cons: None so far
great sound, easy set up, easy window guide.
Pros: easy set up
Cons: pairing with iphone, just one at a time. doesn't remember more than one.
We needed a receiver/amplifier for the living room of our new townhouse. The Sony STR-DN850 works great, giving us stereo sound from our TV, Blue Ray, CD player. The seamless connection to internet services like Pandora is a real treat. Likewise, the Bluetooth capability means that I can lay my iPhone on the stereo cabinet and listen to XM Radio and my iTunes library. Sony's SongPal app allows you to control the receiver from an iPad or iPhone anyplace in the house.
Pros: Easy set-up, internet music sources, Bluetooth connectivity.
Cons: Connecting to a home network is tricky.
Extra user friendly right from the box. On screen set-up was quick and simple. I'm not extremely tech savvy, but a few calls to the Crutchfield support line and I was up and running in no time. This receiver replaced a high end 5.1 Pioneer and sounds just as good or better. Maybe the HDMI connections have something to do with that. Even the remote is much easier to understand and use, with about 15 fewer buttons. Also has "Pass Thru" feature which allows the sound to be on the tv without having the receiver on, for news and shows that don't require surround. I did lots of shopping around and comparisons before buying and feel I made an excellent choice. This receiver is easy to navigate and use, sounds awesome and came at a fair price. I highly recommend it.
Pros: User friendly, built in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, Zone "B" speaker setting for my outdoor speakers.( This was important during my comparison shopping)
Cons: No switched 120 volt outlet on the back for powered subwoofer.

Quality Construction & Circuitry: Borrowing construction and circuitry design from Sony's ES line, it all begins with a rigid chassis based on the legendary frame and beam concept. To this structure, Sony then mounts the various components; a high capacity power transformer, custom heat sink, and other specially selected audio-grade components that together add up to high-quality sound performance.
Assignable 7-Channel Amplifier: The Sony STR-DN850 AV receiver is equipped with a 7-channel amplifier rated at 95 watts (into 6-ohms, at 20-20khz, with 0.09% THD, driving 2 channels). The AV receiver's Surround Back/Front Height amplifier channels can be configured to accommodate your type of home theater setup.
Advanced Digital Cinema Auto Calibration (DCAC) w/ A.P.M (Automatic Phase Matching): The Sony STR-DN850 is equipped with Advanced Digital Cinema Auto Calibration Technology which uses the included microphone to automatically check the speaker connections, adjust the speaker output levels, calculate the distance from each speaker to the listening position, check for phase, and distinguish frequency characteristics of each speaker. The microphone has an 15' cord attached that plugs into the microphone input on front of the receiver. You can select between three auto calibration modes.
Note: You can also choose to manually adjust the AV receiver's speaker settings.
Auto Format Direct (A.F.D.) Mode: The Auto Format Direct (A.F.D.) mode allows you to listen to high fidelity sound and select the decoding mode for listening to a 2-channel stereo sound as multi-channel. You can set the A.F.D. mode to Auto or Multi Stereo.
Dolby Digital/DTS/Dolby Pro Logic: The Sony STR-DN850 AV receiver features Dolby Digital and DTS-HD decoding, as well as offers Dolby Pro Logic audio processing.
Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the A/V preamplifier via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the AV receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.
HD Digital Cinema Sound (HD D.C.S): HD Digital Cinema Sound (HD-D.C.S.) is Sony's new innovative home theater technology using the latest acoustic and digital signal processing technologies. It is based on precise response measurement data of a mastering studio. With this mode, you are able to enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies at home with not only the high quality of sound, but also the best sound ambience, just as the movie's sound engineer intended in the mastering process.
Direct Modes: The Sony AV receiver offers two Direct audio modes for higher fidelity sound.
Headphone Modes: The receiver offers two distinct headphone sound modes.
Advanced Audio Settings: These advanced audio settings allow you to tailor the sound to your source content, listening conditions, and your personal preferences.
Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Sony STR-DN850 offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.
HDMI 2.0: The receiver is equipped with five HDMI (v.2.0) inputs for connecting HDMI-equipped audio/video component; such as your satellite/cable receiver, Blu-ray/DVD player, and game system. The receiver's HDMI v.2.0 jacks are compatible with 4K/60Hz and 1080p video, 3D video signals, Deep Color & x.v.Color technology; as well as LipSync, ARC, and HDMI control.
Note: The AV receiver's HDMI 2.0 jacks do not support the latest HDCP 2.2 copyright protection for 4K ultra-HD content, so it will not support 4K content from satellite/cable providers, online video services, and Blu-ray disc which are copyright protected with HDCP 2.2.
HDMI Upconvert/Upscale (4K): The Sony AV receiver's HDMI upconvert/upscale function improves image quality of non-4K sources to ultra-HD. Analog omposite video connected device signals are converted to digital, upscaled to 4K, and output via HDMI, making one cable connection from the receiver to your TV possible. 1080p HDMI input video signals are also upscaled to 4K.
24p True Cinema Mode: The 24p True Cinema Mode allows you to watch movies at their native frame rate 24p format (24 frames per second) when paired with a 24p playback device like a Blu-ray Disc Player.
MHL Compatible HDMI: One of the receiver's rear-panel HDMI inputs (labeled "Video/MHL") is MHL compatible, which provides direct connection of MHL compatible smartphones, like your Android smartphone. Playback of up to 1080p video and multi-channel audio from the phone is supported. The receiver will also charge (5V/1A) your connected phone. Play, Stop, and other basic operations can be controlled from the AV receiver's remote control.
HDMI Standby Pass-Through: The HDMI Standby Pass-Through feature conveniently allows you to access all your HDMI connected devices without having to power on the receiver.

You can also personalize playlists and receive phone calls while listening to music. The Spotify app for Apple iOS/Android devices and a premium account are required.

I don't believe so. One of the features that I like is Bluetooth in. I can play songs from my home computer network, my I Phone and iPad through my home audio speakers through this receiver. [ BERNARD E Dec 21, 2014 ]
