Versatility is the key to any good home theater receiver. Just how much can it do? With the Sony STR-DN1040, the question should be, "What doesn't it do?" With built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirPlay, loads of connections for all your equipment, 4K pass-through and upscaling, and multi-room capability, you'll stay busy exploring this receiver's many features — and have a ball doing it.

Covering all the bases for streaming music

The 'DN1040 makes it easy to enjoy streaming music through your stereo or surround sound speakers. It starts with built-in Wi-Fi, so you can get connected to your home network without a wired connection to your router. Once you're networked, you can stream music from your iPhone®, iPad®, or iTunes® on your computer with Apple AirPlay. Not an Apple user? Then stream over Bluetooth from your compatible smartphone or tablet. Or pull music from that networked PC in your basement or office. Even without supplying your own tunes, you can listen to free Internet radio from Pandora®, Slacker, and vTuner on your receiver. Or you can plug your smartphone or tablet into one of the two front-panel ports — USB for Apple devices, and a special HDMI input for MHL-compatible Android™ devices.

Add bounce to movie soundtracks

Of course, the 'DN1040 is much more than the sum of its impressive streaming options. It's a powerful home theater receiver capable of driving a 7-channel surround sound system. Movie soundtracks will explode with realism, especially if you connect "surround back" or "front height" speakers to bring a more theater-like experience into your living room. Looking for a little more low-end rumble for your large room? A second subwoofer preamp output lets you add an extra sub, so movie sound effects will make you jump out of your seat. With 8 HDMI inputs, all the latest Dolby and DTS decoding, and plenty of digital and analog audio inputs, the 'DN1040 has all you need to get the most out of your speakers, HDTV, and all your music and movie sources.

Hit the ground running with Sony's setup wizard

It's easy to get the STR-DN1040 connected and running so you can start enjoying movies and music. The on-screen guide and setup wizard will walk you through the steps, including Sony's automatic speaker calibration system. Just plug in the included microphone and let the receiver configure your speakers for accurate, balanced sound customized for your room. Once you're all hooked up and connected to your wireless network, be sure to download Sony's Media Remote app for your smartphone or tablet. It's the easiest way to control your receiver's most important features with touchscreen simplicity. Also try Sony's Network Audio Remote app for quick access to your digital music files.

Received item, described as a scratch & dent unit. Found out it also was a refurbished unit . Item was not listed as a refurb. HDMI problems with audio started after only a week. Returned, never will buy from Crutchfield. I'll use an online seller for audio-video gear from now on. Beware of Crutchfield & their dishonest actions.

    Pros: None

Cons: Item not as described by Crutchfield.

So far so good, better sound than Onkyo 805 Receiver which I had before. Easy set up, you must read owner's manual though to improve what you would like in your home. FM actually plays well, first time for me with a receiver. I like the Net work and Bluetooth features and are very easy to program.

Pros: Easy set up Great sound Sony product

Cons: Display on receiver hard to read Would like to more options on the receiver itself rather than the remote There is no macro settings which I use to simplify on and off and use of equipment

great receiver at a great price. I especially love the internet radio channels from around the world. easy to hook up and get going out of the box. cant beat sony for price and quality in home theater.

Pros: just future proofed my living room ( and game room, I bought 2!) for the next decade.

Cons: not compatible with my Microsoft zune

    Didn't work out

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After reading reviews on this receiver I was excited to get it on sale. The on screen menu is very nice and speaker calibration was easy. Have had nothing but network problems with this unit and Airplay only works for about 30 seconds. Did an update and after 4 hours of watching unit flash updating I finally unplugged to reset. It continued flashing update for 15 minutes or so to finally complete. Overall very glitchy receiver. I think we got a lemon and unfortunately it is going back. Prior to the sale I was leaning heavily towards the Onkyo and that is the way we going. Crutchfield's customer service and tech support has been awesome with suggestions and walking us through everything.

Pros: Nice screen menu Easy speaker calibration

Cons: Confusing remote Network connection sporadic Airplay doesn't work with an all Apple product network

Sound is good, setup is easy. After an hour on the phone with Crutchfield's wonderful tech support, we found I had a defective receiver (ARC was not working). Received a replacement very quickly. Second one is buzzing when plugged in even with nothing hooked up to it and the power off. Waiting for the 3rd one now.

    Pros: Easy set up.

Cons: Large footprint, two defective ones so far.

    Great, but...

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very pleased with the performance of the STR-DN1040, but: 1) Like way too many others, I have experienced several HDMI-HDCP "handshake" issues. Once with my Samsung BD-F5900 Blu-ray player, and once trying to play an HBO program from my DirecTV DVR. Both times I was able to overcome the problem by unplugging the Sony AV Receiver. Firmware is the most recent s9327.1074.0 dated 09-13. TV is Panasonic Viera plasma TC-P65VT60. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this does not become more frequent. 2) I prefer to use the Netflix app on my TV rather than my Blu-ray. I would also prefer to use HDMI ARC for the audio from my TV when watching Netflix. But for ARC to work, Sony's "Bravia" CEC must be turned on. Bravia then tries to "take over" my system, turning components on and off incorrectly. (I use a Logitech Harmony remote.) Therefore, I have Bravia off and use optical for audio from my TV to the Receiver.

Cons: I wish that the STR-DN1040 had a switched AC outlet for my powered subwoofer so the sub would be off when the receiver is off. My old AV receiver had this feature, but I have not seen it on any receiver available in this price range.

Replaced a 13-year-old Harmon Kardon receiver with this so the differences were immediately noticeable for me. That said, the receiver was easy to set up, sounds great and meeting all my expectations.

Pros: Great receiver for the money: Built in Wifi is fantastic, speaker setup is simple and pretty accurate without tweaks, Airplay, nice GUI

Cons: Remote is not user friendly for non-AV people

    AV Receiver Has Issues

Chalupadrop from Phoenix, AZ on 2/10/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver is everything I need in an AV receiver. I bought it after seeing positive reviews on the internet showing its extensive connectivity ability, multiple HDMI inputs etc. I have had the receiver for two weeks and everything worked fine until yesterday. The receiver has known issues passing the video from an HDMI input from the cable TV box to the HDMI out to the TV. I only found this out after looking at the Sony website. Many people are having the same problem and Sony is either blaming it on your TV or saying they are working on a solution. Today, the video from the Cable TV box is working again. Crutchfied techs recommend getting either a Yamaha or Denon receiver to avoid the problems with the Sony. I will keep it a few more days to see if it does not fail again. If it does, will be returning to Crutchfield for another brand. Note that the receiver is great WHEN IT IS WORKING. All other functions are very good. I would recommend steering clear of this receiver until you see reviews online showing that the video issues have been resolved.

Pros: Great connectivity through WiFi, Bluetooth, airplay etc. Very good audio. Good graphical user interface for setting up and controlling the receiver.

Cons: Known problem with connectivity to cable TV boxes. Video out is a flickering scrambled picture. Sony has issued one software update but has not resolved the problem

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver is very nice. The built in wifi and Bluetooth is very good. The receiver has plenty of HDMI's and plenty of other hook ups. Airplay works fine too. The only complain I have with this receiver is the poor ipad control apps. There are three in all and none of them are any good in its self. You have tvsideview, AudioRemote, MediaRemote, all made by sony and neither controls the receiver very good and none of them will control everything like I would work it to. Having add a pioneer vsx-1021 and the controlAV2 app that control the receiver totally, I miss that with this one. You have to turn on the tv and use the provided remote to control it properly. Other than that it is a real nice receiver. It also runs a little hot!

Pros: 8 HDMI Built in Bluetooth Built in wifi Airplay

Cons: Remote Apps Run a little warm

    "Hidden" features

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The 1040 was a Christmas gift to ourselves, and this gift keeps on giving. Our first AV receiver, so if we are amazed at options long available, forgive me for being excited. 1) Nowhere is it mentioned in the documentation that a selected sound field is stored in memory PER SOURCE. This is wonderful! I thought I'd be changing a sound effect every time I changed a source, but the 1040 remembers the last one used. Very nice when changing sources from CD, to FM Tuner, to SAT/CATV, back to FM Tuner. 2) Internet radio via VTUNER! Wow, a whole world opened to us! BBC Scotland for a while this morning, then on to WWOZ in New Orleans! At first we were disappointed that "streaming" did not mean our PC sound (non-MP3's) would "play" to the 1040, but VTUNER has all the channels we listened to on the PC and hundreds more!

Pros: Just about everything! (Now that I've learned more and more of the capabilities of the receiver).

Cons: I wish it upsampled HDMI input. That would have been a sweet bonus. It IS possible to connect our Directv box via composite inputs and that will upsample, but I don't want the complexity of having two Directv inputs into the 1040 (HDMI and composite). Also, I wish there was a Windows program/app to remotely control the receiver from a networked PC.

I just love this receives. It sounds great and was so simple to install. In fact, I like it so much, and was so impressed with the software that guided me through the entire set-up - am considering to buy a Sony Smart TV next time to replace the Samsung I have (Samsung is definitely not simple or intuitive). Customer service at Crutchfield was also great. 3 days after I installed the receiver, for some reason I was unable to get a picture on the television. I called Customer service (was New Years Day and didn't expect anyone to answer) but we walked through a couple scenarios to test the receiver and in the end he said he would have a new one mailed to be right away I got it 3 days later, replaced the original one (again - so simple to set-up) and returned the original - all at not charge to me. The new receives has worked great, sound is wonderful (love all the choices especially the concert settings!!!) and have had not problems whatsoever. Great product and Kudos to Crutchfield for their support!!!!

    Pros: everything

Cons: nothing I can think of

This is an excellent product. Especially for the price. I bought this because my Dennon quit only after a few years. The sound is similar . Very good unit . My system is a Klipsh reference with three front and two rear. The front l/r have been bi-amped. The sound sources are satellite tv, blue ray disk, and a DVD changer.

Pros: Good sound, good price, easy setup.

Cons: The auto sound system does not work very well. Best to do a manual setup

By far the best AV receiver, I've owned. Took some time for setup and initially had issues with the TV HDMI not being recognized by the receiver, however the latest firmware helped to fix the issue. Had to work with the sony customer care to setup the internet radio like Pandora and Sony entertainement network. Could have been much more user friendly.

Pros: Plenty of HDMI ports, Air play, internet Radio, Sleek UI look

Cons: Setup for the SEN can be simplified even more. Not the best audio sound, i've heard

    Wonderful theater receiver.

My previous receiver was giving me troubles with the sound and I decided to upgrade to a theater receiver with HDMI's. The Sony STR-DN1040 was easy to install and now all my electronic appliances are connected to it. The sound is very clear and neat. I am sure that there are better theater receivers in the market but not at this price. I am very happy with it.

Pros: A lot of HDMI's connections. Easy to install. Easy to use.

    Works Fine, as Advertised

David A from Commack, NY on 1/15/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have no problem with the unit, which performs as advertised. To get the fifth star, however, I would have liked to have seen additional legacy inputs/outputs, such as an input for a turntable (which requires a separate pre-amp to use) and an output for a passive subwoofer. (I did have an old turntable preamp, so that was not a problem for me. I did have to purchase a separate amp for my old passive subwoofer. My other option was to buy a new powered subwoofer, which would have been even more costly.)

Pros: Sounds great, works well, arrived without a problem. Setup went smoothly. I like the auto calibration feature for the surround sound. Crutchfield had the best pricing I could find on this unit as well.

Cons: No input for turntable (without using a separate pre-amp); no output for a passive subwoofer. Also, the remote will not operate some of my other equipment and there are no posted codes in the manual or onlline for some brands.

This receiver is very nice with a lot of options; I have yet to check everything out but so far it works for me. The speaker setup did not work so I had to do it manually. Also, the hookups for speakers on the back were difficult to use, but not a big deal.....Haven't used airplay or any music services but don't expect it to be an issue.

    I got a lemon

    360mitch from Seattle on 12/31/2013

After reading the reviews I was really pumped about getting my new STR-DN1040 receiver. It appears you will get a great product or a lemon. I got the lemon. After 2 days it started loosing the picture on the TV. "Signal Lost". Then it would come back and then go out aprox every 3 seconds. It would continually do this until I would unplug and plug it back in. Embarrassing when you hosting the game. Then it would be good for the rest of the day. It took just seconds on the internet to learn I was not the only one having this issue. Sony refuses to admit it could be the receiver. Stated it has to be my Direct TV DVR. Replaced, No help. Replace your HDMI cables. Did that, No help. It must be your TV. Sorry, I am not replacing my $1700 TV. I took it back and purchased the Yamaha RX-V675. Everything is working great. One thing I was not expecting with the Yamaha, but the picture is amazing compared to the Sony. Because I could not find one fix for this issue on the net, I did not even think of swapping for a new Sony receiver. So if you do decide to get the Sony, make sure you can return it if you get the lemon. There is no fix for the ones that have the HDMI output issue. Just do a quick search on internet and you will quickly see what I am talking about.

Pros: Tons of features and great sound.

Cons: Serious HDMI Handshake issues with no fix insight

Wanted something to update my Pioneer Elite 82TXS receiver and this one fit the bill. I've been most impressed with the wireless network feature allowing me to play my music from my iPhone and iPad using Airplay. Works great. The setup software is far better than anything else I've seen, and the sound this puts out through my Orb speakers is excellent! Plenty of power and everything I'm running through it (cable box, DVD and PS3) works well through their HDMI connections. Haven't had any issues with the HDMI board that I've read about in other reviews, so couldn't be happier.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

With the addition of all the modern components that make up a home surround sound system today, it was time for me to upgrade my receiver and speakers too. So after many nights researching and reading all the reviews on CNET, Audiophile, Crutchfield etc. I decided this Sony receiver had everything I wanted and needed from a receiver, so i took the plunge, and I very glad I did. This receiver is just amazing! 8 HDMI connections makes it so easy to just plug everything into the receiver and 1 HDMI cable to the TV and your done! I was very impressed with the easy set up, speaker calibration, and the sound is terrific! I would highly recommend both this receiver and Crutchfield, they were very helpful and everything arrived well packaged and on time (thanks Drew) great job! Trust me you will not be sorry with this receiver or Crutchfield's wonderful customer service.

Pros: Bluetooth, WiFi, easy set-up, great sound

Cons: None, the entire system now sounds like the system I had always hoped to have. Very impressed and very happy!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Receivers have come a long way since I bought my first one (1974) This receiver has a lot of features built into it whereas years before you had to hook up various add-on equipment, have multiple switches, wires everywhere, you had to label everything, thus this receiver eliminates nearly all of that. At a very competitive price, this Sony has a lot of the features the more expensive Denon & Onkyo receivers have and sound just as good. I have a 12 inch Polk Audio sub hooked up to it with a 42 inch soundbar & 2 rear wireless speakers, I think I'm in a theater when I'm watching a BluRay movie!!!

Pros: I love the feature that you can hook up multiple HDMI components to it and only have one out cable, plus the option of a pass thru HDMI, Bluetooth, several speaker outputs, 2 subwoofer outputs, Apple Air Play, 2 yr warranty, the list goes on.....

Cons: No turntable input, no removable power cord.

So far I have a very good product experience and delivery by Crutchfield was flawless- I played movies on Blue Ray, Netflix on my Home Theater projector. Also, I heard FM Radio, Pandora. Fanstastic. Next I will see how it works when I get TV 3D. Yet to experience the Zone 2. I like the fact that I have two HDMI output. So TV and Projector can be sourced through the receiver.

Pros: Awesome sound quality. You can immerse completely owing to the quality of experience. I can hear distinctly almost all sounds in my 7.1 sound system

    Cons: None so far

this is a tremendous receiver. Very easy to set-up and enjoy top quality sound at a great price. The auto set-up is both easy and provides a great sound based on your room dimensions. Once you know the receiver I recommend removing the auto setting and really getting the most out of the power plant. I paired this receiver with a Bose surround system and (2) additional Yamaha front speakers for an incredible sound system. The Bluetooth is great and along with the WiFi, streaming music is super easy.

Missing Optical output, s-video input, buggy firmware

Loh P. from San Francisco, CA on 10/21/2013

The unit seems too complex for its own good. The firmware has some quirks that make it frustrating to use: e.g. getting to the built in settings menu is not straightforward.

Pros: Plenty of digital inputs and built-in features.

Cons: No optical digital output -- many modern speaker systems ONLY have an optical input. No S-Video input for legacy sources. The built in internet services like Pandora can't send sound out through the HDMI output to the TV if that is a requirement; the "AMP+TV" sound routing setting is not persistent -- you have to re-select it each time you turn on the unit. This mode is a requirement for me.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great design although the wattage is quite misleading at 165w x 7 channels. It's actually more like 100 or 110 I believe. The 165w is to one channel driven. The passive airplay is great as you just have to play the music from your device and select the receiver as the output and it automatically turns the receiver on via the Internet. Also the GUI in this model is much better than previous years.

Pros: Passive Airplay, hdmi inputs, GUI, 4k upscale

Cons: Misleading power rating. I can't get the wifi to work, only a hard line connection to my network works despite it seeing my network.

So far it does what I hoped for it to do. The blue tooth is a nice feature as well.

Pros: As I said it does what it's made to do.

Cons: Too many button features. Seems unnecessary to have so many buttons. If somebody messes with your setup, good luck getting working again. Also it turns off on it's on some times. Seen this twice but not sure if it's a power save feature.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced my old SONY audio receiver with this one. Initially I will be using this primarily for audio, then integrating video later. I am copying my digital music collection to a WD box (hard drive) and needed HDMI connectivity. I am also using the Bluetooth feature to play satellite radio on my home audio system using my android tablet to control it. Everything works very well. I found it very easy to connect to the internet, enable the Bluetooth feature and rehook my old components. Even my old JBL speakers sound very good with this receiver. My grading scale for a new product is the lesser I need to refer to a product manual, the better the product. This product is pretty intuitive and the menus were easy for me to navigate my way through. Soon I will be replacing my home theater receiver (different floor) as well and will strongly consider getting another one of these receivers. As far as reviewing Crutchfield, there is none required....they are simply the best to deal with,

Pros: Feature rich receiver at an excellent price, great sound, easy setup.

    Cons: None encountered to date

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased from Crutchfield and it came boxed well and with extras that Crutchfield is always known for including. A book of wire labels was very helpful when I was running the surround sound through the walls. The receiver worked great, plenty of power and ez to setup. It works with everything I hooked up to it including tv, ps3, and directtv genie. Souns is amazing and has plenty of hdmi ports for convenience. Banana plugs fit well into speaker inputs. Hooked up with the Energy 5.1 speakers and panasonic vt60.

Pros: Great sound, wi-fi updates, airplay, bluetooth.

Cons: none I have found yet

    Great Reciever for the price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After reading several reviews I eventually purchased this receiver. It is replacing a Yamaha RXV-2600 that was retired as I needed more HDMI inputs. All I can say is the sound quality is superb! This unit is driving a 7.1 Paradigm Millenia One set-up with a Seismic 110 sub-woofer. After running the easy set-up, I had to adjust the settings as they rated my speakers as large and for some reason set the sub with a +10 DB boost and set the distance at 25 ft. (Ran for flat response) Simple matter of changing the settings and running the PBK from Paradigm prior, really opened up the bottom end. This receiver is really versatile and interfaces with my Samsung BD-F7500 Blue Ray Player, Xbox 360 Elite, and Sony PS-3. All connected by HDMI with output to 70" Vizio M-701 LED TV. All I can say is wow! For a receiver at this price this does everything and more than my Yamaha did several years back, and cost less than 1/2 the price! Very pleased with my purchase, and Cruthfield shipped and processed my order with no issues.

Pros: Great sound, versatile, GUI is the best in the industry, plenty of inputs, 4k up-scaling and pass-through, Great price for what it does.

Cons: Room auto correct is not that accurate. More versatility within input settings would be nice. Ability to change/ delete inputs not used from the menu. Having volume display show on-screen via overlay vs. on the receiver's front panel display only.

I have a new STR-DN-1040 receiver, and the build quality is great, and I love to number of HDMI inputs and the superb GUI. However, the receiver is adding noise to the video signal routed through the receiver. I have a Sony S790 Blu-Ray and an HD cable box each connected via HDMI to the receiver, and the receiver's HDMI out goes to a new Samsung plasma TV (5500 series0 The picture from either source includes a good bit of snow when routed through the 1040. There is no problem or video noise when either source is connected directly to the TV via HDMI. The cables are hi-speed; I've double checked connections, tried moving the receiver output from HDMI A to HDMI B; turned off "fast view" and 4K scaling; and tried a full reset of the receiver, but I'm still getting a light "snow" on the final picture. in addition, the HDMI standby switch does not appear to be working, and I've made sure that it is activated. I'm finding this very disappointing, since I bought this receiver specifically for its HDMI switching capabilities, I've got a message in to Sony, so we'll see how it goes. I hope to updare my rating to a 5 soon!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this to replace an Onkyo which was dated enough to have no HDMI ports. I didn't expect it blow it out of the water and it doesn't But that receiver was like 1,200 when it came out and put out 135 high quality watts. But it is and improvement. The range seems better. Higher highs and lower lows. On screen interface is really nice. Lots of options. I have mine set to 'direct in' and 'pure analog' and the sound, well, it's just awesome. Using two JBL tower speakers with two 10' inch subs each and powers them well.

Pros: High performance and wattage for this price range. Lots of options. Plenty of HDMI ins and two outs. Not very large, and surprisingly not a nearly as heavy as I might have expected given quality. Makes me want a house so I could really crank it!

Cons: Took me a while to get it set up. Though I guess that can be expected of really any new receiver. I'm inputting to it from my home computer with a sound card and it took some doing to get a happy marriage with the two.

Great receiver. Easy to set up the sound field. I just wish it was easy to set up everything without having to buy a TV with HDMI inputs (our plasma is still doing well after almost 10 years).

Pros: Sounds great. Easy to set up sound field.

Cons: Needs instructions on how to set up other parameters using just the display on the receiver (manual covers HDMI display output on a TV). I know this can be done (stumbled on to the sound field set-up), but it is not covered in the manual.

You can't get better for the price.

I've got it connected to Mirage Nanosats and a Mirage OS3-CC as well as a Martin Logan Dynamo 1000 subwoofer. The STR-DG800 that I was going to replace was no slouch. It powered all my speakers with aplomb. When I connected the DN1040, the sound quality improvement was very obvious. EVEN AT LOW VOLUME. Before getting this receiver, I dabbled a comparable Denon. The Denon sounded great--especially when played at louder volumes. But the bass was gone at lower volumes and sometimes prevented my subwoofer from waking up. The DN1040, on the other hand, has a specific audio feature that optimizes it for low-volume. The Sound Optimizer alone is a reason to get one of these. I cannot tell you how useful it is for techy dads who enjoy the home theater experience while the infant and toddler and wife is asleep. It's pretty amazing how much technology can be squeezed into this price point. I'm not certain there's another price-comparable receiver with this many input options. It's also pretty reassuring to watch movies and listen to music through a receiver from a company that actually has movie studios and record labels. You can see that Sony has obsessed with things such as the chassis design to minimize noise and DSP algorithms calculated from actual concert halls. Crazy. It definitely punches far above its weight class. Is it worth the extra $150 over the STR-DN840? For me, yes. MHL, more HDMI (both in and out), more power, and a sweet, sweet GUI.

Pros: MHL is so useful. It's a great way for my 2 year old to Skype with her grandparents from a smartphone and see them on the TV. I've also experienced zero-lag with MHL. I've played Modern Combat 4 from my phone on my TV as if it were a gaming console. The first time you experience it is mind-blowing. Also, it charges the device and plays the audio. The bass is rich at all volumes (likely due to having larger capacitors & a power supply in its class). The GUI is great, too.

Cons: Playing audio using AirPlay with the receiver off does not automatically turn the receiver on. There is no on-screen volume display on my receiver. Not a deal-breaker for me, but if you have your receiver behind a cabinet door or within a rack, I can see that as being an issue. The microphone calibration is a little antediluvian. It actually ships with the same mic that came with my several-generations-old DG800. The Denon has this Audyssey mic calibration that

So I have been a Sony fan for a few decades.....only ever purchased ES line receivers and equipment but decided to try this one out for the basement, and although skeptical I was actually pleasantly surprised. Have this paired with an OPPO BDP-103 a Sony KDL-70R550A and Definitive Technology Pro Cinema 800 surround setup with the 1000 Center and the additional 2nd 800 sub. And again the receiver is well perfect for what I need it for great network options, plenty of inputs, tons of available power and this coming from someone who has owned or owns 6 different ES receivers as well as a few high end Denon models well there are no complaints NONE and to say that is well not typical, it does everything you could ever want for the price (and I have spent 5K on a receiver in the past) so to say its flawless (at this price point) says a lot. If you want 8 HMDI inputs future 4K up-scaling plenty of power, Bluetooth linking Airplay, well then click add to cart and order as I am sure as I was you will not be disappointed

Assignable 7-Channel Amplifier: The Sony STR-DN1040 AV receiver is equipped with a 7-channel amplifier rated at 100 watts (into 6-ohms, at 20-20khz, with 0.09% THD, driving 2 channels). The AV receiver's Surround Back/Front Height amplifier channels can be configured to accommodate your type of home theater setup.

    • Surround Back: Allows you to enjoy high-fidelity reproduction of Dolby Digital TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS-HD (High-Resolution Audio or Master Audio) with 7.1 channel surround, using the Surround Back speaker channels.
    • Front Height: You can enjoy vertical sound effects if you connect two additional Front-Height speakers in Dolby Pro Logic IIz mode. No Surround Back speakers in this configuration.
    • B-Speakers: If you are only connecting a 5.1ch speaker system, you can use the Surround Back/Front Height amp channels as a Speaker B output, allowing you to place a pair of speakers in another room of the house. Speaker B can be played at the same time of Speaker A, or by itself. Speaker B uses the same volume control and source input as Speaker A.
    • Front Bi-Amp: If you are not using the Surround Back/Front Height at all, you can connect them to your front speakers using a bi-amplifier connection (if applicable). This provides even better sound quality from your front speakers. Your home theater setup will be limited to 5.1ch.

Advanced Digital Cinema Auto Calibration (DCAC) w/ A.P.M (Automatic Phase Matching): The Sony STR-DN1040 is equipped with Advanced Digital Cinema Auto Calibration Technology which uses the included microphone to automatically check the speaker connections, adjust the speaker output levels, calculate the distance from each speaker to the listening position, check for phase, and distinguish frequency characteristics of each speaker. The microphone has an 15' cord attached that plugs into the microphone input on front of the receiver. You can also choose to manually adjust the AV receiver's speaker settings.

Auto Format Direct (A.F.D.) Mode: The Auto Format Direct (A.F.D.) mode allows you to listen to high fidelity sound and select the decoding mode for listening to a 2-channel stereo sound as multi-channel. You can set the A.F.D. mode to Auto or Multi Stereo.

    • A.F.D. Auto: Presets the sound as it was recorded/encoded without adding any surround effects.
    • Multi Stereo: Outputs 2-channel left/right signals from all speakers.

Dolby Digital/DTS/Dolby Pro Logic: The Sony STR-DN1040 AV receiver features Dolby Digital and DTS-HD decoding, as well as offers Dolby Pro Logic audio processing.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the A/V preamplifier via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the AV receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

HD Digital Cinema Sound (HD D.C.S): HD Digital Cinema Sound (HD-D.C.S.) is Sony's new innovative home theater technology using the latest acoustic and digital signal processing technologies. It is based on precise response measurement data of a mastering studio. With this mode, you are able to enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies at home with not only the high quality of sound, but also the best sound ambience, just as the movie's sound engineer intended in the mastering process. You can choose from four HD-D.C.S movie modes (Dynamic, Theater, Studio, or Sport) and six music modes (Berlin P.Hall, Concertgebouw, Musikverein, Jazz Club, Live Concert, or Portable Audio).

Direct Modes: The Sony AV receiver offers two Direct audio modes for higher fidelity sound.

    • Analog Direct: The receiver's Analog Direct mode outputs audio from only the front left and right speakers without any tone or DSP processing; only the volume and front speaker balance adjustments are active.
    • Pure Direct: To further enhance sound quality, the receiver's Pure Direct mode not only bypasses the tone and DSP processing, but also turns off the front-panel display to suppress any noise which may affect sound quality.

Headphone Modes: The receiver offers two distinct headphone sound modes.

    • HP 2CH: Sets the receiver to power only the front left and right speakers, no surround and no subwoofer. Two channel sources bypass the sound field processing and multi channel sources are down-mixed to 2 channels.
    • HP Direct: Amplifies the source without any processing, only the volume and front speaker balance adjustments are active.

Advanced Audio Settings: These advanced audio settings allow you to tailor the sound to your source content, listening conditions, and your personal preferences.

    • Equalizer: You can adjust the tonal quality (bass & treble level) of the front speakers from -6dB to +6dB, in 1dB steps.
    • D.L.L. (Digital Legato Linear): The Digital Legato Linear function is a Sony proprietary technology that allows low quality digital audio signals and analog audio signal to be played back with high quality sound.
    • Sound Optimizer: The Sound Optimizer lets you enjoy clear and dynamic sound at low volume levels. It automatically calibrates the sound which cannot be heard well when you turn down the volume level. After Auto Calibration is performed, the sound level is optimized to suit your environment.
    • Dynamic Range Compressor: This feature allows you to compress the dynamic range of the sound track. You can select standard or maximum compression, or off (only works with Dolby Digital sources).
    • Auto Volume: Auto Volume adjust the volume automatically depending on the input signal or content from the connected equipment. This function is useful, for example, when the sound of a commercial is louder than the TV programs.
    • Center Lift Up: By using front high speakers, you can lift up the sounds of the center speaker to an appropriate height on the screen, allowing you to enjoy a more natural representation.

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Sony STR-DN1040 offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

    • Digital Inputs: The receiver has two optical digital inputs and one coaxial digital inputs (all assignable). You can choose auto decoding or PCM for the digital audio inputs. Auto will decode the signal in its original form (Dolby Digital, DTS, PCM, etc), PCM decodes the signal to 2-channel.
    • Speaker Outputs: The receiver is equipped with binding post terminals for all speaker channels. The binding post terminals will accept bare wire, pin connectors, and banana plugs (single only). Use speakers with a 6- to 16-ohm impedance.
    • Dual Sub Outputs: The AV receiver is fitted with two subwoofer preamp outputs to connect dual powered subs.
    • Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted. No sound is output from the headphones when an iPod or iPhone is connected to the receiver.

    Video Section

8 HDMI Inputs/2 HDMI Outputs: The Sony STR-DN1040 is equipped with eight HDMI v.1.4 inputs (7 rear/1 front) for connecting HDMI-equipped audio/video component; such as your satellite/cable receiver, Blu-ray/DVD player, and game system. The receiver also allows you to connect all of your devices to up to two TVs with HDMI, via its dual HDMI monitor outputs; reducing cable clutter. The dual HDMI outputs will simultaneously output the same audio/video signal to the two TVs. The receiver's HDMI v.1.4 jacks are compatible with 1080p/24Hz and 4K video, 3D video signals, Deep Color & x.v.Color technology; as well as LipSync, ARC, and HDMI control.

    • 4K Pass-Through: 4K Pass Through allows the Sony STR-DN1040 to receive super high-definition resolution video and pass the video signal to a 4K compatible TV or display monitor. This ensures compatibility with the latest super high resolution video formats.
    • 3D-Ready: The Sony STR-DN1040 is compatible with 3D-ready Blu-ray disc movies, video games, and other 3D content through its HDMI (v.1.4) connections. 3D viewing requires 3D-ready source with 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D glasses, and high-speed HDMI cable. Other 3D accessories may also be needed.
    • Deep/x.v.Color Support: The Sony AV receiver also supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture.
    • A/V Sync: The audio output can be delayed so that the time gap between the audio output and the visual display is minimized. This is especially helpful when you are using a large LCD or plasma TV or a projection TV. When activated, the delay can be adjusted from 0-300 ms or set to Auto.
    • ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.

MHL Compatible Front-Panel HDMI: The receiver's front-panel HDMI input is MHL compatible, which provides direct connection of MHL compatible smartphones. Playback of up to 1080p video and multi-channel audio from the phone is supported. The receiver will also charge your connected phone. Play, Stop, and other basic operations can be controlled from the AV receiver's remote control.

HDMI Upconvert/Upscale (4K): The Sony AV receiver's HDMI upconvert/upscale function improves image quality of non-4K sources to ultra-HD. Analog connected device signals (component/composite) are converted to digital, upscaled to 4K, and output via HDMI, making one cable connection from the receiver to your TV possible. 1080p HDMI input video signals are also upscaled to 4K.

24p True Cinema Mode: The 24p True Cinema Mode allows you to watch movies at their native frame rate 24p format (24 frames per second) when paired with a 24p playback device like a Blu-ray Disc Player.

HDMI Standby Pass-Through: The HDMI Standby Pass-Through feature conveniently allows you to access all your HDMI connected devices without having to power on the receiver.

HDMI Preview: This feature provides a live picture-in-picture preview on your HDMI-connected TV of HDMI inputs connected to the receiver. HDMI Preview is not compatible with 4K and 3D video signals.

Analog Video Inputs: The Sony STR-DN1040 features 2 component video inputs and a component video monitor output. These jacks feature an 80 MHz bandwidth, making them capable of passing high-definition video signals (up to 1080i). Convenience Features

On-Screen GUI (via HDMI): You can display the receiver's on-screen GUI on your HDMI connected TV screen and select the function you want to use from the on-screen GUII using the included IR remote control. You can easily access and manage your input devices and settings with this intuitive "activity based" on-screen GUI. The STR-DN1040's on-screen, set-up wizard will take you through everything you need to create and control your home theater experience. If your TV is connected to the composite or component video monitor output, you will need to use the AV receiver's front-panel display when changing settings.

Zone 2: In addition to the main listening room, you can also enjoy audio playback from a different source in another room of your home using the receiver's Zone 2 Line Output. By using the Zone 2 line-level outputs on the Sony STR-DN1040, you can connect an external receiver or integrated amplifier, allowing you to still listen to 7.1ch surround in the main room and 2ch stereo playback of a different audio source in another room of your home. The volume of the secondary zone is controlled by your Zone 2's integrated amplifier.

    • Compatible Zone Sources: Only Tuner and Analog input sources are processed through Zone 2. You cannot select different AM/FM radio stations for your main room and Zone 2.
    • Incompatible Zone Sources: Optical/coaxial digital, HDMI, Network, USB, AirPlay, Bluetooth, and video sources are not output to Zone 2.

Input Naming: You can enter a name of up to 8 characters for each of the receiver's inputs (except Tuner) and display the name on its display. This is convenient for labeling the jacks with the names of your connected components.

Input Mode: When you connect components to both digital and analog audio input jacks on the receiver, you can fix the audio input mode to either of them, or switch from one to the other, depending on the type of material you intend to watch.

Keyword Search: You can type in a keyword to search for music stored on your network PC or available from the included network apps. Simply enter in the song or artist name.

Sleep Timer: The unit may be set to automatically turn off after 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.

Dimmer: You can adjust the brightness of the display in 3 steps - Dim Max, Dim Mid, and Dim Off.

Auto Standby: Auto Standby lets you set the receiver switch to standby mode automatically after 20 minutes when you do not operate the receiver or when there is no signal input to the receiver.

    Remote Control

Multibrand Remote: The supplied IR remote is pre-coded to control this Sony receiver, Sony TVs, Sony CD players, Sony DVD players and recorders, and Sony Blu-ray disc players and recorders. You can also program this remote to control non-Sony audio/video components.

Bravia Theater Sync: Sony's Bravia Theater Sync feature allows you to easily manage select BRAVIA televisions and Sony HDMI audio and video components with a single remote. By connecting Sony components that are compatible with the HDMI Control function with a HDMI cable, operation is simplified in the following ways:

    • One-Touch-Play: When you playback a component such as a DVD/Blu-ray Disc Player, the receiver and the TV are turned on automatically and switch to the appropriate HDMI input.
    • System Audio Control: While watching TV, you can select to output the sound from the TV speaker or the speakers connected to the receiver.
    • System Power Off: When you turn off the TV, the receiver and connected components are also turned off simultaneously.
    • Home Theater Control: You can switch an input of the receiver or switch soundfields by using your Sony TV's remote control.

Remote App Control: Download Sony's free Media Remote and Network Audio Remote apps from the iTunes or Google play app stores and use your compatible Apple iOS or Android device to control volume, inputs and receiver function with the Media Remote app; and control your network music with the Network Audio Remote app.

Note: The Media & Network Audio Remote apps require that the Sony AV receiver and your Apple iOS, Android, or Sony remote device be connected to the same wireless network with the remote device connected through an 802.11 access point (802.11n recommended).

IR In/Out: The Sony AV receiver is equipped with a 3.5mm IR input/output which accepts IR repeater systems, enabling you to operate components connected to the receiver behind a closed door or controlling the receiver's Zone 2.

We have not received any answers from other customers on your question. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to help answer your question. [ Krissy  Jun 08, 2014 ]  Staff
Nope. not unless you have an Android Tablet, Like the Xperia Z (I have) or an ipad as my girlfriend does, but show volume when using the free Sony app you can download off of Google Play or Itunes depending on your tablet. [ ANDREW  Mar 29, 2014 ]
I don't think is doable for cable and sat you are transferring all commands to the box ( it is a shame to relegate those powers to a lesser entity , for blue ray you will have to get out of the imput and after fixing the volume will have to go back to br, don't complicate your life use the volume in the remote . [ RODOLFFO  Mar 22, 2014 ]
You need to have a preamp or amplified speakers with volume control [ ANDREW  Mar 29, 2014 ]
Sorry but I am not using any of those features so I can't answer the question. I installed the unit in a yoga studio and dont have access to it to find out. [ ERIC  Mar 17, 2014 ]
From the unit itself. [ CLEVELAND  Mar 17, 2014 ]
Maybe the zone 2 jacks? Or, since the headphone jack is in the front (one jack) buy a stereo RCA to single jack. [ STEPHEN P  Jan 28, 2014 ]
I use an RCA cable and plugged it into one of the subwoofer outputs on the receiver and plugged it to the right input on the subwoofer the red one. I have no problems. The subwoofer works fine. [ kenrick  Jan 17, 2014 ]
Please read the instructions on your Sub . It should tell you what kind of hook up you need to do . [ RODOLFFO  Jan 17, 2014 ]
There is currently no Spotify ap in the SEN input. It does have Pandora and a few other ones. I was forced to purchase a Roku 2 just because it had an analog out which allowed me to stream Spotify and Pandora to my Zone 2 and it works great. Of course, you can also download the Spotify ap on your phone and run it through the Bluetooth channel. So there are alternatives. [ CHRISTOPHER M  Jan 06, 2014 ]
Sorry I don't have this receiver hooked up yet and I don't use spotify so I won't be able to answer your question. You should ask crutchfield tech support or sony tech support they should be able to answer your question. Another thing you can do is check that spotify works with the Bluetooth on your device if it plays over Bluetooth on other stuff if should play over Bluetooth on this unit. I would recamend this receiver from the reviews it looks like a great unit [ NOAH C  Jan 06, 2014 ]
    I can't help with that I don't have the unit networked. [ ERIC  Jan 05, 2014 ]
Hi Andrea, I have this receiver and it does have Pandora available as an option for you. I usually use the the Pandora app thru my Directv service but also use Airplay with my iPhone as well. The fact that the Sony has built in wireless was the major factor in making my decision. Hope this helps! Phil [ PHILIP  Jan 05, 2014 ]
I don't think so, but I've had zero difficulties streaming via my network, or upswing a Bluetooth connection. I know this doesn't really answer your question, but I hope it helps. By the way I am completely satisfied with the receiver and highly recommend it. [ JOE M  Jan 05, 2014 ]
This Sony unit is the poorest piece of equipment that I have ever owned. I am disappointment because this is a SONY product. I sent it back to SONY repairs and they sent it back saying that there was nothing wrong. It still has plenty of glitches. I don't recommend purchasing one. Good luck. [ LARRY G  Jan 03, 2014 ]
There are "Zone 2" outputs for a powered amplifier. They only supply two channel analog audio signals (basic stereo). The Zone 2 outs are standard RCA jacks (L/R). It is possible to have listen to a different SOURCE output to Zone 2 than is selected in the main zone. A very good amp, but there are some limitations/irritations - but I would definitely recommend this receiver! Check out the avforums to get more details, and go to the Sony site and download the users manual in PDF if you need more research material. [ RONALD E  Dec 30, 2013 ]
Yes, this reciever has one output to a powered amp. I assume you are referring to running a second Zone. Unlike my previous Onkyo it does not have powered Zone 2 so I did have to buy a separate amp, but its a simple Coax hookup from the reciever and the Zone 2 on works well. [ VIRGINIA  Dec 29, 2013 ]
No. This model doesn't have the pre outs for a power amplifier. [ JAYAPRAKASH  Dec 29, 2013 ]
    sorry can't helpon that, i don't have enough knowledge [ ROBERT M  Dec 29, 2013 ]
Hi Kristin - I personally haven't used this feature, but I believe I can answer our question. The 2nd zone on the 1040 is not amplified, but would send a (selected analog input, not digital) signal to a second amplifier's RCA inputs much like a CD player. This second amplifier would then control the volume of the 2nd zone. From the Sony you would select which input you want output to zone 2. I hope this helps! [ MICHAEL S  Dec 16, 2013 ]
Kristen I'm I'm not the one to answer your question I have never worked with zone 2 I also have a 7.1 system in my family room and I've been very pleased with my new Sony and would recommend it to anyone and what I really like is the way that electronically on screen sets up but if I gave you a good educated guess I would say that zone 2 would be the way to go to hook up your outside speakers but I would imagine Crutchfield what have a better handle on that answer than me but as a receiver I would highly recommend it or you could contact Sony direct but I've never had a lot of luck with that good luck and enjoy [ NOEL  Dec 09, 2013 ]
Sorry, but it wouldn't allow me attach the photo I took for you. hopefully the manual will be enough to answer your question. [ Jason C  Dec 07, 2013 ]
From what i see, the back has 2 RCA Plugs Left/Right Red/White Sony has the manual available for download on their site, but this for wouldnt allow for a link. pg 14 has a diagram of all the connections on the back of the unit, and pg 88 has all the info on the zone 2 hookups..i've taken a picture of the inputs on mine, as i've just gotten it installed and havent pushed everything back against the walls yet. Hope that helps [ Jason C  Dec 07, 2013 ]
    Unfortunately another receiver [ RODOLFFO  Dec 07, 2013 ]
Kristen, I bought this same receiver because I wanted to do the same thing. I wanted another zone in the house where I could send audio, for example to send the tv audio to the living room as well as the kitchen. I learned some hard lessons and eventually returned the receiver. There is a zone 2 out on this reciever. You cannot send digital audio to zone 2. If you have a source on the receiver that is connected by a digital HDMI cable (game system, blu-ray, apple TV, roku, etc) then it cannot go out to zone 2. Period. You can only send AM/FM radio and analog audio sources out to zone 2, that is only sources connected by the red and white RCA cables (like old VCRs, etc). This was very frustrating! Why is there a zone 2 if only some sources can go to zone 2? Instead, I bought an HDMI "audio breakout" unit that can steal audio going to you TV set and send that to zone 2 without using the receiver at all. It was about 38 bucks online. Good luck. [ SEAN  Dec 07, 2013 ]
    Thanks Eric [ Cyrill  Dec 05, 2013 ]
Thanks you Martin, I maybe i just have to wait for its launch here [ Cyrill  Dec 05, 2013 ]
I have the US model, which I'm pretty sure only works on 120VAC. It has a connected AC line cord that is the standard 120VAC line cord. I suspect you need to order an international model of this receiver for use on 220-240VAC. This should work with any speakers. I'm using mine with a mix of three different vendor's speakers. [ MARTIN P  Dec 04, 2013 ]
120V, and it would work with those speakers. [ ERIC  Dec 04, 2013 ]
The receiver is large because of the internal components. If you are looking for a smaller receiver, then I would recommend contacting an Advisor. They will be able to help find one that will fit your needs. [ Jeff  Dec 02, 2013 ]  Staff
Thanks for your questions Gary. Unfortunately, this receiver is not a great match for the 901s. Like many current receivers it's not designed to work with the Active Equalizer. A quick call or chat with an Advisor should help you track down a receiver that is still compatible with the 901 speakers. There wouldn't be any issues with using the Acoustimass 10 with this unit.
