Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Great sound & quality
Pros: 100 watts per channel
Cons: None so far
Turn any living space into an immersive home theater with Sony's STR-DN1080. This feature-packed receiver is a great match for the latest 4K TVs and Blu-ray players. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X decoding delivers 360-degree surround sound for the most lifelike movie experience you can have at home.
Enjoy convenient control with your phone or tablet. Sony's SongPal app is a free download for your Apple® or Android™ device. And if you have a Google Home controller, you can use it for hands-free control of music playback and volume.
The STR-DN1080 gives you all kinds of wireless listening choices. Chromecast built-in lets you use your phone, tablet, or computer to stream music from over 100 audio apps to the receiver. Apple AirPlay lets you stream from a compatible iOS® device, and Bluetooth adds even more wireless music options. Plus, you can stream audio from the receiver to a set of Bluetooth headphones — great for late-night listening.
The STR-DN1080 has connections for nine speakers, and can power up to seven speakers at once. You can set up a standard 7.2-channel surround sound system, or you can reassign the surround back channels to be used as height channels in a Dolby Atmos system. You can also use these channels to power a second pair of front "B" speakers, or to bi-amp your main front speakers for more powerful sound. Powered Zone 2 outputs let you set up a stereo system in another room. Choosing one of these options gives you 5.2-channel surround sound in your home theater.
Special processing lets you take full advantage of the STR-DN1080's flexible features. The receiver's Phantom Surround Back speaker setting replicates the sound of rear speakers for 7-channel sound from a 5-speaker setup. Or, if you're working with a smaller space, you can hook up just one pair of speakers, and get virtual surround sound effects without having to place speakers all around the room.

Average Customer Review(s):
Great sound & quality
Pros: 100 watts per channel
Cons: None so far
Having decided to upgrade to 4K TV, I wanted to take full advantage of the features of the STR-DN1080. I've had 2 previous Sony receivers and because it is very similar to control, this was the obvious choice for me. Plenty of power and features and the speaker calibration with the included microphone dramatically simplified the installation.
Pros: Ease of setup Speaker calibration a snap Power and versatility
Easy setup, great sound and versatility. Everything a top-notch AVR receiver should be. Price did go up $100 while I was looking, but still worth the money. Crutchfield support is awesome too!
This thing is awesome for the price! I'm especially at awe with the automatic calibration, barely any further adjustments were needed after the initial ca. It also sounds better than my previous Onkyo TX-SR705 AVR.
Strong features but the remote leaves a lot to be desired. You MUST use a menu to select half of the hdmi inputs. Really? Yes. My STR-DH820 (and also 800) which this replaces has ALL inputs selectable on the remote. Its' a big remote - but importantly I can go directly to any input from the remote. This annoys me every, single, time, I have to access one of those, such as the 2nd game console. Every. Single. Time. Major one star ding for this. Almost did a 2 star ding for it. Indeed it probably would have been a deal breaker for me; Certainly would have been for my wife. What was Sony thinking?
Pros: Lots of inputs
Cons: Must use a menu to select half of the hdmi inputs. Really? Yes.
Just beginning to learn all that it is capable of. Not a bit disappointed as of yet.
Replaced an STR-DN860 with this model. It carries 4K HDR signal perfectly, making the Bravia Sync feature a breeze for anyone with a set top box (Apple TV, etc). The sound is superb for the value, you won't be disappointed.
Excellent unit, very easy setup and the sound is great for music or movies. I've never regretted a Sony purchase and Crutchfield's staff was great to work with as usual.
Pros: Easy setup & surround sound quality
Cons: None yet
First and foremost the receiver itself sounds great. However I have a list of minor issues that all together subtract one star. 1) the remote control is too simple, there are too many functions that can only be accessed through the on screen menu. 2) the "songpal" app is very basic and it also is very limited as to what it can do. 3) when connecting to another source (zone 2), there are two outputs one analog (RCA jacks) and one digital (HDMI) and the analog out will only output signals that were input from analog signals (RCA jacks) and similarly the HDMI will only output signals from digital signals (HDMI). In order to allow my non-HDMI second source I had to purchase an HDMI to optical converter box to send the digital signal using an optical cable.
Pros: Sound, features
Cons: app and remote are too simple; zone 2
Coming from A 13 year old Yamaha receiver. Sony sound quality is fantastic with better surround sound balance. Plenty of options for wireless connectivity
Pros: Easy set up. Remote user friendly for all family members
Cons: Wish it had a clock on the display panel but no one does
I talked with a supervisor for your "tech support team " yesterday. I conveyed the great difficulty in getting audio output in an external speaker system streaming movie content offered by Netflix, Prime, etc.. The secret is to connect the TV and amplifier with a digital optical audio cable. I returned two components, one X900E Sony and one Onyko 810 because I was advised that the problem was with Arc circuitry.
Pros: All three components are great products. You just need to know how to connect them to insure all their capabilities.
Easy set up,good product
Great sound, easy to set up. Looks good, built solid. Decent amount of connections, though not legacy ones. The only real negatives are the paucity of optical connections and that the AirPlay and Bluetooth don't always hold their connections.
Easy to hook up and gives me the sound I was expecting.
The Sony STR-DN1080 is a really top notch AV receiver. I have owned similar receivers from Pioneer, Yamaha, Samsung and Denon. The sound processing on the Sony is the best. The setup gives you a lot of control and is much simplified. This is a very well thought out consumer friendly receiver. Highly recommended at this price point. It handled all of the HDMI signals flawlessly as well communication between it and my Samsung Smart TV. The manual is minimalist, but still gives you all the information you need to set it up. The on screen menus walk you through the rest.
It sounds great! Easy to set up, and really does surround sound well. I highly recommend it.
After spending 3 months researching which Home Theater Receiver to get, I finally both the Sony str-dn1080 and I love it. Originally i was going to get the denon avr x2400h. but having done more research i could not find a good enough reason to pay more for features I dont care about.
Pros: Setup is easy Multi Room support for both audio and video Mobile App allows for easy connection to your 3rd party apps and media A lot of inputs for both audio sources and video 6 HDMI 2.2 inputs HDMI Output supports ARC Sounds Amazing
Cons: 6 ohms
Nice receiver with lots of features. This replaces a STR-DH820 which pushes down and remains with the Sony TV it lived with. This purchased to properly pair with the Sony XBR-65900E and UBP-X800. I'm looking for some matching speakers to try the ATMOS which seems quite nice. Also looking forward to the bluetooth integration. The extra inputs are needed as well. Just too many things (esp with a son with a game console museum to hook up). Mostly also it just works seamlessly.
Pros: Lots of inputs ATMOS Blutooth "Just Works"
Cons: Wish it had a selectable ATMOS / 7.1 . Even without an additional amp channel I'd like have both sets of extra speakers plugged in and to be able to switch configurations (and corresponding calbration tunings)
I love it. Easy to setup. This replaced my Pioneer VSX-1024. The surround sound rear speakers sound more real than my old unit. Now to try and get some Atoms speakers.
I read a ton before deciding on this receiver. Most of the reviews out there from those trusted in the industry like Cnet and Sound and Vision put this as one of the best mid-priced receivers on the market and I would agree with those reviews. I am really happy with how great the sound is and how it has really added to the experience of watching movies and listening to music. I previously had a Denon from 5 years ago that was great, but just not up to dynamics and range that I have heard from this receiver. The overall experience from the user interface is good, although a bit slow sometimes. Connectivity is great and although I haven't had a chance to use the second room speakers (I still need to buy some) it seems that will be a seamless process. I am using the ARC feature more on this receiver than in the past and it is working really well. I have my LGC7 hooked up the this receiver and I also decided to hook up my new apple TV directly to the TV as well. It has been great as I can use my LG TV remote to control the TV, Sony receiver, and apple TV. It is really great to change inputs and use the same remote for all devices. Simplink is set to on for all three and everything is powered up just by turning the TV on and the native LG netflix app is even sending Dolby Atmos via ARC. Awesome! Overall I am really pleased with this Sony for its sound as well as function and of course Crutchfield was great through the buying process and questions.
Pros: Amazing Sound, clear but dynamic Great Connectivity Easy to use Interface
Cons: Interface is a bit slow
The unit that I received has been unable to pass video signals but the assistance I've received to this point from Crutchfield has been outstanding. A replacement unit has been ordered. I will be sure to leave my review after receiving and hooking the replacement unit up.
This receiver is part of my first ground up HT build and I would 100% recommend it to anyone considering this unit! Anybody looking at this receiver is likely looking for solid unit, with a full gamut of features at a reasonable price. This is it! I purchased this on sale, however, I would recommend it at full price as well. I have this hooked up to a 5.1.2 system. I chose this and ran the DCAC calibration, everything logged properly. I double checked the distances and levels after the calibration and they were spot on accurate to my listening position. Inputs I have hooked up: Set-Top Box, BD/DVD Player, PS4 and I use Bluetooth for music frequently. So far all have been seamless and full 4k, HDR resolution has been passed through effectively with no A/V interruption! Only complaint (while minor) is the delayed start-up when using auto-on function with TV. I use the TV or Cable box remote to begin watching cable which initiates the power on for the receiver. The TV and Cable box turn on quickly, but the receiver takes about 10-15 seconds to turn on and begin passing video and audio to TV and Speakers. With that said, this is my first A/V receiver (have used a few HTIB before), so may be "nature of the beast".
Pros: Price, Power, Fidelity, Value, Flexible Input & Output Options, Everything!
Cons: Slow Start-Up
Flawless so far, and has many features that were not present in my previous Sony receiver, such as a front USB port, WiFi, internet apps, support for 4K HDR, etc. All at a very reasonable price.
One can't go wrong ordering a SONY Stereo Receiver. This is an above average system for the normal to picky audiophile at a reasonable price. The menu system needs improvement. One shouldn't have to hook up a monitor to configure. Bluetooth pairing a little difficult. Would be nice to have a Bluetooth Pair button on the front. Also, please bring back an AM/FM Tuning dial. Just because all other brands don't do it either, doesn't mean Sony has too. All in all, I would buy this system again for sure.
Pros: Great sound
Cons: A little difficult to program. Definitely need television or monitor attached. No AM/FM Dial. Bluetooth pairing a little difficult.
Great product and price! Merry Christmas to me!
Sorry I will not put the product into operation until on or about 8 Jan
I have not yet taken the dn1080 to its permanent home but did run a quick shakedown cruise connected to Ethernet, radio antenna, Visio tv (HDMI) and iPad Bluetooth. It seems like I am always running out of inputs. The 6 hdmi in on this unit and Black Friday pricing sealed the deal for me. Everything I tried worked as advertised, including audio from tv over hdmi and audio from ipad via Bluetooth. The box and ad copy brags about AirPlay for Apple but there is nothing about it in the operation manual and it didn't magically appear as an option on my IPad; but, I did not yet pursue it with my normal perseverance. Despite several emails form Crutchfiled warning of possible delayed delivery (3 weeks) it arrived on my doorstep just several days after I confirmed that I wanted it even if delayed significantly, I will update after I ring out all of the features in its permanent home. Hopefully it will get to 5 stars.
Pros: Six HDMI in. Lots of features and flexibility
Cons: No guidance on Airplay use. Tiny black on black front panel buttons with even tinier labels. I would have to install it at eye level with a floodlight to use these controls so probably will make do with the remote and turn the tv on even just to listen to audio (my most frequent use)
So far I'm quite happy with this receiver, although I only have it hooked up to two channels so far. I hope to have it hooked up to 5.1 soon.
Pros: Much better menu setup than my 10 year old AVR it replaces. Sound is very good.
Cons: Missing pre-out connections for more elaborate setups. Backlit remote would have been nice.
I am replacing a 17 year old receiver that cost more than this one. I have a smaller room, added 2 speakers to make a 5.1.2 setup, a 1080p display and no zone 2. I'm impressed. The sound is strong and accurate. The room correction seems to make my unmatched speakers blend better. But even with all the digital processing turned off its a great sound. I'm still making my way through all the adjustments. Dolby surround upmixer is SO much better than dolby pro logic. This was a scratch and dent. I didn't see any.
Cons: a lot of adjustments to work through
I had six different brands same price range hands down this Sony sounds awesome if you know how to use it
Pros: Awesome sound
Cons: Input issue
I highly recommend purchasing this product. It took my home theater to a whole new level and having Dolby Atmos has really added to the surround sound experience. I purchased a movie that was encoded with Dolby Atmos and watched it. The experience was just like being in the theater and I can't wait to find more movies that utilize Dolby Atmos technology.
Pros: Easy setup, great features for streaming music, and of course Dolby Atmos technology.
Cons: When I turn the receiver on for some reason it automatically mutes itself. I'm sure it's just a setting somewhere but I have not been able to find it yet.
Awesome sound and picture quality, love this receiver. Sony 4 life. Thanks!!!
Pros: Sound, and picture and atmos is amazing.
I would have given 5 stars if HDMI pass through the system when off. My last tuner (Yamaha) allowed content to pass through to TV speakers when off. With Sony the tuner must be on for the content to be delivered to the TV. Only problem with this is that I always have to watch TV with surround system on (ran digital cable to get around this). I would recommend this tuner though.
Pros: Easy setup. From open box to full setup within an hour. Powerful system for an affordable price.
Cons: No HDMI pass-through when tuners off.
Simply a horrible product. Worse than the defective unit it just replaced. Poor sound quality, no power at all and the built in Chromecast doesn't work. HDMI control very flakey. Goes into muting or shuts off display every few minutes.
Pros: Appearance, price
Cons: Performance, reliabilityCrutchfield response on 12/5/2017 Steve, we're sorry you're disappointed with your receiver. Great system. All the great attributes you could want.
sounds great. the speaker self calibration was easy and really made my mishmosh of speakers sound like a perfect set. the only two dings: 1) my comcast xfinity X1 box would NOT run when placed on top of this home theater receiver. The Xfinity remote would not wirelessly pair. Something in this home theater receiver was outputting a wireless frequency that jammed the xfinity zigbee receiver. when i moved the xfinity box about 5 feet away, it started working again. 2) the speaker binding posts are a non-standard distance apart (black hole to red hole). consequently, all of my speaker wires, which had dual banana plug connectors on the end, would not plug in. that added a little time connecting all the speaker wires up. other than that, seems to be working fine
Pros: reasonable price, good output power, easy self cal of the speakers
Cons: nothing serious yet
Pros: Great sound, plenty of power, more than enough inputs.
Cons: Menu navigation for initial setup could be a little more user friendly.
Purchased to compliment a 2015 Sony Bravia 4k TV as well as a recently purchased Sony UBP-X800 4k Blu-ray player. This receiver is a significant upgrade over the Denon AVR-E300 which I have been using for the past few years. 4K HDR support, 6 HDMI inputs, Dual zone audio and video capability, wifi connectivity and support for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X give this receiver great flexibility and ensure a long service life. The graphical user interface simplifies the setup process compared with the Denon and the included calibration microphone worked well for me. The Sony does not support as many third-party apps as the Denon did out of the box (i.e. iheartradio, last.fm, etc.), neither does it allow you to play songs from Spotify directly through it, but, a future firmware update may change that. And in all honesty, I don't really miss it. Most of my other devices have that capability and it's just simpler to stream music to the device via a phone or tablet than it is to fumble through the GUI anyway. Power is more than sufficient for my needs. My current configuration is a 3.1 setup consisting of two Pioneer BS22-lr, a Pioneer SP-C22 center and one Pioneer SW-8MK2 sub (I have a pair of Pioneer SP-FS52 floor standing speakers on order to complete the 5.1 setup). This receiver has breathed new life into the speakers with both music and movies. Music is more enjoyable at all volumes, especially lower volumes, while movie dialogue is now clearer than I've ever heard. I am
Pros: Attractive styling; compliments existing Sony components well. Plenty of power for most home theater setups. Easy to use GUI. Relatively future-proof.
Cons: Lacks support for 3rd zone. No front panel HDMI input. Screw type binding posts.
This a very nice receiver. This replaces a Sony receiver which I purchased back in 2008 which is being relocated in my garage. The new receiver is married up to a new 75" 4K Sony XBR900E WHICH I recently purchased from Crutchfield. This Sony TV and receiver are a match made in heaven.
Pros: Really Sweet receiver!
Cons: None, thats why i always purshase Sony products.
easy set up
This receiver was very easy to set up and sounds great. Works very well with the Sony UBP X800 blu-ray player and 900E TV. It has google Chromecast audio built in and that works great as well. Overall very happy with my purchase!
Very Happy with this receiver. I've connected this to my SONY XBR-930E with a modest 5.1 Polk Speakers setup. This receiver is leaps and bounds above my experience with my previous 2014 Denon AVR-X2100W receiver which i was never really happy with. For me the sound is amazing and I think this is a great buy for the average home user. I also have a Fire TV box hooked up to this as well and I'm very happy with the functionality there as well. I still have yet to run through all of the set up functions with the receiver but so far so good. I have used the bluetooth function with my phone to listen to my playlists on my iPhone 6 and the set-up was simple and again the sound is fantastic. I'll try to update my review as i get the chance to use the receiver more. I do wish the remote was backlit.
Pros: value ease of use
Cons: Remote not backlit
I think that this receiver is typical of the type of receiver that is sold today. The user has less control of the equalization, dynamic range, volume for each speaker with out going into the onscreen menus. On my previous receiver the Sony STR-DE935 which lasted 17 years, all the functions you could ever need were at your fingertips. You could change the soundfield of a movie, or any audio source from small hall, large hall, live room, or over 15 other settings . I like more buttons. More buttons = less menus. The receiver remembered the settings when you changed the input from CD to Cable/SAT. The STR-DN1080 only has bass & Treble. The initial autocal sequence determines the equalization and phasing to match my room acoustics instead of relying on your own ears. The receiver still has some good qualities. The sound is very good with ample power when I have it set up the way that want.
Pros: lots of power, 4k adaptability
Cons: Not enough control over levels, and tonal quality. The machine determines what you rear.
First and foremost, the Crutchfield staff are excellent and the customer service really is outstanding. Thank you! This is a very good receiver, but has a significant limitation. If you are buying to take advantage of the new Dolby Atmos/up-firing height speakers -- specifically, the receiver does not allow height sound output when using DTS Neural:X up-mixing. This is also the case with in-ceiling speakers that are placed at middle height. The receiver works fine for Dolby Atmos encoded material, but the vast majority of content (movies, TV, games) is not currently encoded this way. So, for me, the up-mixing is a significant factor, particularly since the rationale for buying a new AVR is take advantage of the new '3-D sound' technology. The Dolby Surround up-mixing on the Sony does output to the Dolby Atmos speakers, but in my experience DTS/Neural X and Dolby Surround up-mix very differently. (Dolby Surround seems to be better for atmospheric sound, whereas Neural X seems to do a better job replicating discreet overhead sounds, eg, airplane.) This is of course all very subjective (akin to, say, a 6.1 vs 5.1 setup), but given that other AVRs will output to up-firing speakers when up-mixing in Neural X, this, at least for me, was a material deficiency in buying a new AVR. I contacted Sony directly about this, and they told me that they have no plans to update the AVR firmware to fix this. (Note that this issue also applies to the ES line.) Otherwise, this is a very capabl
Pros: Generally great sound with good power, easy set up, generally solid features, bluetooth trasmitting option, good price, nice GUI, nice menu system without GUI, separate speaker terminals for Zone 2
Cons: Does not output sound to up-firing speakers or middle ceiling speakers when using Neural X upmixing, using Zone 2 is difficult to figure out, doesn't work well with google home despite advertising
Upgraded from the Sony STR DN 1030, what attracted me to this model was the 4k pass through. Atmos and the Phantom surround which makes a movie more realistic sounds. When watching a action move the sound isn't constant and overwhelming, instead the sound is when and where it should be and not when it isn't especially the bass. I got a open box and it's just like new. No need to worry with Crutchfield's outstanding service.
Pros: High end Surround sound at a Affordable cost. Quality product.
Cons: None that I have found so far.
Awesome AVR. 4K on all HDMI inputs and outputs. Clean, clear power. Easy to setup. Very useful tools.
Pros: Works well with other brands.
Cons: Could have used 2 more HDMI inputs.
This unit sounds great but it will not do multi-zone audio and video. Tech support really tried to help but we were unsuccessful.
very good rcvr for a reasonable price. Has features that are usually not on rcvrs in this price range.
Amazing product that does exactly what I want and is easy to use.
Pros: Easy set up Intuitive remote and on screen controls Easy set up to use with app A lot less buttons than my old Pioneer VSC 920 with more function.
Cons: May not be configurable enough for highly technical users.
Wow, I can't believe how much I was missing, with respect to sound quality, until I upgraded my receiver to the Sony STR-DN1080. I have been using an old Sony Dolby Pro Logic receiver that has served me very well throughout the years. Given some recent investments into surround speakers, I decided to also upgrade the receiver. Was I surprised. I recently tried other receivers and was not happy with the sound quality. Sony, on the other hand, has excellent sound and personal experience of product overall quality and longevity. Great addition to my Sony TV, Sony Blu-ray and replacement of my old Sony receiver...
Pros: Sound Setup Customization of settings Good power output Crutchfield support
Cons: Auto calibrate was far from what I considered the best sounding output. Take the time and manually calibrate the system to your personal preferences. Semi-slow startup when selecting a device
All the power needed for a small loft 5.1 set up. Easy to start up and calibrate with included microphone. I will not be using all the features that it offers. Great price. Why pay more?
Pros: Straight forward receiver that is adequate for most basic setups. Great price.
Excellent sound, beautiful video.......couldn't ask for more especially at this price.
Pros: Sound and video are great Easy set up Wonderful, easy to use interface
Cons: remote lacks backlit buttons
Slow connecting with tv.plus there's no dolby vision.
Nice sound. Easy to set up. It acts a little funny sometimes and changes to a different input at startup and sometimes starts off at the onscreen "home" screen. It is very annoying causing me to have to use the receiver remote and change to the desired input. It also will only upscale the video signal to 4K from 1080P. It will not upscale 1080i or 720p,etc. Otherwise, It's a good receiver.
I upgraded from Sony STR-DN 1060 because I wanted HDR passthrough and it did not disappoint. All the features that have been highlighted for this product work perfectly. I only had a couple of problems with it. The new DN1080 is slower than the DN1060, it takes a while for the receiver to start working when I turn in my tv. Be aware hat Sony takes it time to adapt new technology. Dolby Vision is already available on select d Blu-ray players, but the reciercer wont update the firmware to support it until fall or at the end of the year.
Pros: - Great features for the price - Nice UI
Cons: - No Dolby vision support yet - Some speakers have to turn of when you enable Zone 2
I finally upgraded after 38 years (really). Decided on this receiver based on Sony's reputation, CNET (and other) reviews and the extensive feature list. My experience with it has been a mixture of (1) met/exceeded expectations, (2) don't know yet, and (3) came up short. (1) Overall I am pleased and would probably buy it again. After an initial stumble (see below), setup was easy. It produces great sound and is pretty easy to use. (2) After keeping the same hardware for decades I am in the process of upgrading everything, so I haven't had a chance to test all the features (e.g., I only have two speakers for the time being). (3) I had a couple of disappointments that may not be so important for other people: when I first tried to set up the receiver I was surprised to learn that I needed a "modern" (i.e., HDMI-based) TV. Once I upgraded my TV, setup was easy. More importantly, I have trouble getting good FM reception. The receiver comes with a proprietary antenna. If I stretch it out towards the middle of the room and hold the end, I get outstanding reception. If I put it in any more reasonable configuration, I pick up some static on most stations. This may be due in part to the fact that I live on a hillside, but still... I contacted both Crutchfield and Sony support where I've ultimately learned that the antenna connector is proprietary and there is no alternative except to try going full DIY. Without the antenna problem, I would give 4 1/2 *
Pros: - easy to set up and use - extensive set of features - capable of great sound
Cons: - inadequate antenna (modest included antenna CANNOT be replaced by anything different). I get static - limited built-in music service list (does not include my favorite, Pandora) - requires connection to an HDMI-based TV in order to set it up (but, if you don't want to connect a TV, you shouldn't be paying for all of the TV-oriented features included with this receiver)
over good performance, but needs a tv to set up.....
Upgraded from Sony STRDH710. This receiver is a good upgrade for newer technology. Sound is clearer and I don't have to use a splitter on my subs. Easy setup on screen guide is a nice touch. I hardwired the network so can't comment on Wi-Fi connectivity. The Bluetooth connection is finicky on two flagship phones. I thought the built-in Chromecast would be great however it only casts audio so back to a Chromecast during one HDMI input. So far so good.
Great Sound, setup is somewhat complex, 4K pass through and upscale are an improvement over last years Onkyo TX NR 636.

Quality Construction & Circuitry: Borrowing construction and circuitry design from Sony's ES line, the STR-DN1080 AV receiver utilizes selected audio-grade components and parts that together add up to high-quality sound performance.
Assignable 7-Channel Discrete Amplifier: The Sony STR-DN1080 AV receiver is equipped with a 7-channel amplifier rated at 100 watts (into 6-ohms, at 20-20khz, with 0.09% THD, driving 2 channels). For greater stability and output power a glass-epoxy circuit board is used. Unlike cheaper resin boards, internal vibrations are reduced for less distortion, just clear high power from each of the discrete amplifiers. The AV receiver's Surround Back/Height amplifier channels can be configured to accommodate a variety of home theater setups.
DCAC (Digital Cinema Auto Calibration) EX w/ APM (Automatic Phase Matching): The Sony STR-DN1080 is equipped with DCAC (Digital Cinema Auto Calibration) EX technology which uses the included microphone to automatically check the speaker connections, adjust the speaker output levels, calculate the distance from each speaker to the listening position, check for phase, and distinguish frequency characteristics of each speaker.
Note: You can also choose to manually adjust the AV receiver's speaker settings.
Compatible Digital Audio Formats: 3 powerful DSP (digital signal processors) support the latest 3D surround sound formats, ensuring the highest accuracy in signal decoding. The AV receiver supports the following stereo & multichannel digital audio formats through its HDMI jacks and optical/coax digital inputs.
|Digital Audio Connector||Audio Signal Type||Audio Signal Format|

Immersive Surround Sound: The Sony STR-DN1080 AV receiver goes beyond regular surround with the latest immersive surround sound formats - including Dolby Atmos, Dolby Surround, DTS:X, and DTS Neural:X.
Direct Stream Digital (DSD): Enjoy studio-quality sound thanks to the Direct Stream Digital (DSD) audio codec; designed specifically for High-Resolution Audio. This 1-bit format utilizes a stream of very high frequency 1s and 0s to recreate audio waveforms at a higher resolution than conventional codecs. The result is clearer, crisper, High-Resolution Audio quality. The STR-DN1080 supports DSD 2.8/5.6MHz (2ch) decoding thru USB & DLNA, as well as DSD 2.8/5.6MHz (up to 5.1ch) decoding thru HDMI.
Direct & Headphone Modes: The Sony AV receiver offers two Direct audio modes and a Headphone 2ch for higher fidelity sound.
Audio Enhancements: The Sony STR-DN1080 incorporates many different types of audio technologies to help your system sound its best whether you are enjoying high-resolution or compressed audio files.

The Sony STR-DN1080 offers several unique flexible speakers solutions when you can't accommodate a conventional 5.2ch or 7.2ch speaker setup in your room.
Center Lift Up & DTS:X Dialog Control: The Center Life Up feature reproduces a natural sound that feels more authentic by lifting the sound from the center speaker up to the height of the screen. The DTS:X Dialog Control function adjusts the dialog levels over background sound during playback of a DTS:X soundtrack.
Audio Outputs: The Sony STR-DN1080 is fitted with the following audio outputs.
HDMI 2.0a: The receiver is equipped with six HDMI 2.0a inputs for connecting HDMI-equipped audio/video component; such as your satellite/cable receiver, Blu-ray/DVD player, and game system. You can toggle or simultaneously output the same video between two displays, such as two televisions or a television plus a projector. Or you can setup the second HDMI output as a Zone 2 output, so you can view a different audio/video source in another room of your home (video is output at the resolution supported by both TVs).
1080p to 4K Upscale for HDMI: The Sony AV receiver's HDMI upscale function improves image quality of 1080p high-def sources to ultra-HD 4K. You can upscale 1080p HDMI input video signals to 4K and output them through the main HDMI monitor output jack of the receiver. The HDMI B/Zone output does not support upscaling.

By connecting the AV receiver to your home network you are able to stream select online music services from Google Cast and audio files stored on your window-based PC to your home audio system. The Sony AV receiver offers an on-screen setup wizard to configure the receiver to your home's network. The following system environment is required to use the network function of this receiver.
Note: Network setup requires that the receiver be connected to your TV via HDMI for display of the on-screen menu. The receiver's network setup cannot be accessed through its front-panel display.
Chromecast Built-In: Chromecast built-in lets you instantly stream a variety of music apps from your Apple (iOS 7.0+) or Android (OS 2.3+) mobile device to the Sony AV receiver. Chromecast built-in works over WiFi and allows you to connect more than one device at a time to the AV receiver, as well as control what's playing from anywhere in the house with your compatible mobile device.
Spotify Connect: The integration of Spotify Connect will enable Spotify Premium users to instantly select and wirelessly stream music to the Sony AV receiver from within the Spotify app (Apple iOS or Android). Spotify is a digital music service that gives you on-demand access to one of the largest music libraries in the world (over 15 million tracks and counting). Spotify makes it easier than ever to discover, manage, and share music with your friends. You can browse music by artist, album, track, or most popular; and create your own music library with customized playlists.
AirPlay: AirPlay lets you stream your favorite songs directly from your iPod touch/iPhone/iPad (iOS 4.3.3+), or from your iTunes (10.2.2+) library on your PC or Mac to the Sony STR-DN1080, over your home network connection. By downloading Apple's free Remote app onto your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad you don't even need to be in the same room as the components or your computer to play, pause, skip, and stop the songs in your iTunes music library. You will even see the iTunes music information, including your track titles and artist info via the Sony receiver's on-screen menu (via HDMI).
DLNA Certified: The Sony STR-DN1080 is DLNA certified. By connecting the Sony STR-DN1080 to your home's network, you can listen to variety of compressed & hi-res music files and view still-image files on your Windows PC (w/ Windows Media Player 11 or 12) or a DLNA (ver.1.5) compatible media server through the receiver and your home entertainment system. It can recognize up to a total of 999 network files/folders. Compatible music & photo files include -
FM Tuner: The STR-DN1080 has 30 presets for FM radio stations. In addition to preset and auto tuning, stations can be tuned directly by frequency. Each preset station can be given an 8 character name. There is no AM tuner on this receiver.

Front-Panel USB Port: This AV receiver is equipped with a front-panel USB (type-A) port that allows you to enjoy a variety of compressed & hi-res music files and still-image files from a USB mass storage class memory device, such as a USB thumbdrive or portable digital audio player. The receiver can recognize up to 500 total files/folders. You can use the receiver's on-screen menu (via HDMI) and remote control to navigate your stored music or photo files on your connected USB memory device. USB portable devices that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the AV receiver's USB port (5V/1A); even in standby mode. Compatible music & photo files include -
Note: The receiver's USB port is not compatible with Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad or Android smartphones/tablets.
Zone 2: Zone 2 features line-level and speaker-level outputs. Zone 2 can be powered by a separate amplifier (keeping 7.1ch playback in your main room) or by the STR-DN1080's built-in amplifier (limiting the main room to 5.1ch). The volume of Zone 2 can be controlled by the Sony receiver using either configuration or from your add-on integrated amplifier when using the line-output.
HDMI Zone: The Sony AV receiver provides a HDMI Zone output, so two different HDMI audio/video input feeds can be sent to two different displays at the same time directly from the receiver. The HDMI Zone will also output 2ch audio signals (multi-channel audio is downmixed) for the HDMI input source selected, while maintain multichannel audio in the main zone (if you select the same HDMI source in the Main Zone and the HDMI Zone, then both zones will be limited to 2ch). If you connect TVs that have different resolutions in the Main Zone and HDMI Zone, but select the same HDMI input for both zones, the video signals output to each TV are limited to the lower resolution TV.
Wireless Multiroom Audio: The STR-DN1080 AV receiver also supports wireless multiroom audio streaming via Sony's Music Center app (previously called SongPal Link). With the Sony Music Center app on your Apple iOS 9.0+ or Android OS 4.4+ device, you can link multiple Sony Music Center compatible devices (sold separately) together to create zones, allowing you to stream the same or different audio sources from the app to multiple rooms throughout your house over your home's WiFi network. Compatible music sources include -
Note: Bluetooth, AirPlay, & DSD audio are not supported by the receiver's wireless multiroom audio feature.
Chromecast Built-in Multiroom: Using the Google Home app for Apple iOS 8.0+ and Android OS 4.0.3+, you can sync multiple speakers with Chromecast Built-in in multiple rooms of your home to play the same song from compatible Chromecast music app throughout your house at the same time. Friends and family can even use their own Chromecast compatible phone or tablet to cast music to you system by connecting to your home's WiFi network.
Google Home Voice Commands: With the Google Home voice-activated speaker (8064658762, sold separately) and the Google Home App (for Apple iOS 8.0+ or Android OS 4.2+), you can use your voice to control select functions of the Sony AV receiver. With a simple voice command, you can play music from Chromecast compatible music services by artist, song, genre, album, playlist, mood or activity. You can also turn up the volume, skip to the next track, or stop the music - all without lifting a finger.
Remote Apps: The Sony STR-DN1080 offers remote control from your Apple iOS or Android device via Sony's Music Center (formerly called SongPal) or Video & TV SideView apps.
IR Remote w/ Bravia Sync: The supplied IR remote is pre-coded to control this Sony receiver, Sony TVs, Sony CD players, Sony DVD players and recorders, and Sony Blu-ray disc players and recorders. Sony's Bravia Sync feature allows you to easily manage select Sony televisions and Sony HDMI audio/video components with a single remote. By connecting Sony components that are compatible with the HDMI Control function with a HDMI cable, operation is simplified in the following ways.
IR In/Out: The Sony AV receiver is equipped with one IR input and one IR output enabling you to operate components connected to the receiver behind a closed door.
Advanced On-Screen Menu w/ Setup Wizard (via HDMI): You can display the receiver's on-screen menu on your HDMI connected TV screen and select the function you want to use from the on-screen menu using the included IR remote control. You can easily access and manage your input devices and settings with this intuitive 6-panel "activity based" on-screen menu. The STR-DN1080 on-screen, set-up wizard will take you through everything you need to create and control your home theater experience. The on-screen menu is only available from the receiver's HDMI output. If your TV is connected to the composite video monitor output, you will need to use the AV receiver's front-panel display when changing settings.
Note: Initial setup requires that the receiver be connected to your TV via HDMI for display of the on-screen menu. Many of the receiver's setup functions can only be found via the on-screen menu and not the front-panel display.
Custom Presets: The Sony AV receiver features four Custom Presets that are accessible through the on-screen menu. Selecting a Custom Preset will automatically launch a number of operations that initiate play of a source input; such as powering on the receiver, switching to the appropriate source input, and recalling the selected DSP surround mode. The presets are pre-configured, but can also be manually reconfigured to your preference. Customer Preset 1 & 2 have dedicated buttons on the remote control for even quicker access.
Input Mode & Name: When you connect components to both digital and analog audio input jacks on the receiver, you can fix the audio input mode to either of them, or switch from one to the other, depending on the type of material you intend to watch. You can enter a name of up to 8 characters for each of the receiver's inputs (except Tuner) and display the name on its display. This is convenient for labeling the jacks with the names of your connected components.
Auto Standby & Sleep Timer: Auto Standby sets the receiver to standby mode automatically after 20 minutes when you do not operate the receiver or when there is no signal input to the receiver. You can also set the sleep timer to automatically turn off the receiver after 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.
Software Update: By downloading the latest version of software from Sony, you can take advantage of the newest functions. The receiver accesses the Sony server to update the software through its network connection. Visit the Sony eSupport website for the latest software updates.

Has all the features you could want in a modern receiver, reviews from all over are nothing but complimentary. Needed to replace a 1999 year ES model, and this seemes like the best solution, instead of the bigger, NON-wireless/internet/usb media savvy ES units. not sure. I don't have a turntable [ Brandon Jan 03, 2018 ]
Dick, I'm not sure if a turntable has to go through a preamp and then to the receiver, best call Crutchfield customer service. There are rca inputs. [ Mark Jan 03, 2018 ]
From Sony: To connect a turntable that only has a PHONO output jack, you need to connect a phono equalizer (not supplied) between the turntable and this receiver. Then you could connect it to one of the RCA input jacks such as video one as long as that HDMI port is not being used. [ Kevin Jan 03, 2018 ]
Yes, You will need to download an app to run the amp [ Mike Dec 31, 2017 ]
Unfortunately the only way to power the device is by the receiver remote and on the device. I personally have not been able to find a way to power the device from an iOS device, however, AirPlay still works great once the receiver is on. [ A Dec 31, 2017 ]
The 165 watt rating provided by Sony was taken with a 1kHz test tone running through the amp. We use the more accurate full-bandwidth (20-20,000Hz) wattage rating. Basically, when every single audible frequency between 20Hz and 20,000Hz is run through two channels of the amp at the same time, it produces 100 watts continuous (at 6 Ohms). The wireless subwoofer in that soundbar system will only connect to the bar included with it. Also, the soundbar is not designed to work with a theater receiver. It is a stand alone powered speaker that will connect to the TV/projector without the need for a theater receiver. We do have wireless subwoofer kits that can work with this Sony receiver and others like it. I recommend contacting an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 for a personal recommendation. I have no idea, I returned the Sony and purchased an Onkyo and like it much better. [ Douglas Dec 04, 2017 ]
Living in the US, mine was 120. But, if you call Crutchfield, you can get a knowledgeable answer. Good luck. [ C Michael Nov 18, 2017 ]
No just bass and treble, but you can adjust independently for each speaker pair. Allegedly the automatic calibration/speaker setup with the mic adjusts for speaker/room frequency deficiencies, and then you can chose from 3 'calibration tyoes' Full flat, engineer and front reference. I like the engineer and front reference settings they brighten up the audio a bit. All in all not having a parametric settings like my older Sony es Receiver has it not really a big deal. The airplay and wireless/networking advantages more than make up for that. I quite enjoy my 1080 Receiver. [ DAVID Oct 31, 2017 ]
I didn't keep the Sony, I didn't like it. I belive the subwoofer crossover was set to 120hz. I exchanged for the Onkyo TX NR777 and I love it. [ Douglas Oct 31, 2017 ]
There are ways to have a wireless home theater system, but none of them use a home theater receiver. Sonos is one of the brands that offers a solution where you don't need to run wire all over the room. There are others too. I recommend calling an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 for a personal recommendation on a system. My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=101 [ Paul Oct 16, 2017 ] Staff

According to the owner's manual (page 43) you would need to go into the "Setup" menu, select "Zone 2 power-ON" and then you can adjust the volume for zone 2 from either the Sony's remote or the front panel volume control. Zone 2 audio is also only output in stereo/2-channel. For more details or to discuss further, please feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (888.955.6000) or online chat. Thanks! Home theater receivers do not offer the required "monitor Loop" connections needed for the external EQ of the Bose 901 speakers. The Yamaha R-S700 stereo receiver offers the required connections and has been a very popular model for owners of the Bose speakers: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_022RS700/item.html [ Ryan Sep 27, 2017 ] Staff
I don't know of an app but connecting it to the usb port and then using the amp remote press listen (select) usb and the contents should be displayed buy all music or artist or folders. [ Lynette Sep 18, 2017 ]
There doesn't seem to be any Sony app that's designed to help manage and control their receivers. I don't have the Walkman to try but don't even know what app I'd hope to use. [ Jon Sep 18, 2017 ]
Hey Clifford. The ST5000 is really designed to be a stand alone solution - so it would not be a good match for running as a center channel. If you're looking to upgrade your system though, I would recommend calling or chatting with an Advisors online. They can help discuss what options there are, and what will work with the gear you already have. [ Jeff Aug 29, 2017 ] Staff
Tech Support is included with your purchase from Crutchfield, feel free to contact our Tech Support team. They can walk you through the settings on the product and see if there may be a fix. Are you referring to 6 *ohm and 8 *ohm speakers? If so, the Sony STR-DN1080 would accommodate a 6-ohm center speaker with 8-ohm being used for the rest. Each of the receiver's 7-channels are stable down to 6-ohm (minimum); so speakers 6-ohm or higher would work. If you'd like to discuss further, please feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (888.955.6000) or online chat. Hope that helps! [ Larry Aug 05, 2017 ] Staff
I have this receiver, you can output any HDMI source to HDMI ZONE. However, you will not hear HDMI audio on Zone 2 only analog audio. You would need to connect to a powered amp to get audio to external speakers. [ Albert Feb 14, 2018 ]
Sorry, no. External sources connected to the receiver's HDMI, optical, coax digital and analog audio inputs cannot be output to Zone 2 (powered or pre-amp). So, you would either need to use the TV's built-in speakers or, you can connect the audio output of the second TV to an external amp or powered speaker. [ Ryan Jul 20, 2017 ] Staff
