Our take on the Sony WX-GT80UI

Sony's App Remote feature lets your iPhone® and the WX-GT80UI CD receiver work together to control select apps. You can use your iPhone's touchscreen to select sources, pick radio stations, and launch apps. At the same time, you can select apps using the receiver's source button, the same way you'd choose the CD player or radio as your source.

App control and killer looks

Sony's App Remote feature lets your iPhone® and the WX-GT80UI CD receiver work together to control select apps. You can use your iPhone's touchscreen to select sources, pick radio stations, and launch apps. At the same time, you can select apps using the receiver's source button, the same way you'd choose the CD player or radio as your source.

And this receiver will look awesome in your dash. The 4" tall front panel offers an expansive display area, with a prominent control knob and colorful backlighting. You can choose from over 35,000 colors to create the perfect look — while the Sound Synchronization feature pulses the illumination in sync with the music.

Sony WX-GT80UI

App Remote lets you select iPhone apps with this Sony's controls, and use your phone as a remote control.

Plenty of media options

The WX-GT80UI is ready for your mobile devices — you can plug your iPhone®, Android™, or Blackberry™ into the front USB input and access your stored music. Plus you can tune in your favorite Pandora® Internet radio stations when your iPhone is connected. You can also connect SiriusXM's compact tuner (not included) to this receiver, and enjoy the exceptional news, talk, sports, and music programs offered on satellite radio. The aux input on the front panel will handle almost any other audio source.

Sound quality that matches the looks

What's the point of installing high-performance car audio equipment if your car stereo only has bass and treble controls? This Sony offers the tools you need to get the most out of your gear. Sony's Digital Music Plus (DM+) enhancer renergizes your compressed music. Then you can tweak your tone curve with the built-in 7-band EQ, while two sets of preamp outputs make it easier to get powerful, clean performance from your amps.

The digital time alignment features allows you to time your speakers to create a perfect stereo "sweet spot." The Rear Bass Enhancer eliminates mids and highs from your rear speakers, pulling the soundstage forward and reinforcing your bass. You can use the low-pass filters to adjust the bass coming from your subs, and the high-pass filters to trim low frequencies out of your full-range speakers so they play more efficiently.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Sony stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the receiver, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: The App Remote feature only launches iPhone apps that have been registered with Sony.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had it professionally installed so I can't comment on ease or difficulty. Only 4 stars for sound quality because of a slight background hi frequency whistle only while playing the radio. Ease of use is downgraded but is not really a problem if one tries to learn a little more each day. The upside of this is the great flexibility in adjustments available. Build quality appears fine but time will tell.

    Pros: adjustability

Cons: requires patience to learn how to fine tune

A little bit better than the factory radio, but not much.

    2004 Ford Ranger
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's a little bit better than the stock radio. I installed this in a 2004 Ford Ranger. The original radio was actually fine, had four decent speakers and sounded pretty good. The reasons I went for the Sony were several: The lighting on the factory radio was so dim I could not read the panel in any other light but a dark night with the dash lights on. Also, the Sony has a USB and MP3 player front-panel inputs, plus the description promised a setting where the rear speakers could be programmed as (kind of) subwoofers. Oh, and the Sony definitely looked better than the drab, black factory radio. So how does it all work? The lighting on the Sony is just OK. The one-line read-out is fairly dim and although I didn't want the light green as my color, it's the only one that is bright enough to see in daytime. Night time lighting is also just OK. If I dim the display so that the lighted ring around the volume control knob isn't obnoxiously bright, then the rest of the display is hard to read. Also, the plastic face over the display is so shiny that any light in the cab at all makes so many reflections on the face that the dim display is gone. C'mon, Sony engineers, you can certainly do better than that. Or maybe not. The tuner is nowhere near as good as the factory radio. We live in a fringe FM area but the factory radio pulled in all of the FM stations I want very well. The Sony is scritchy on all of them. It works great for our local FM stations, but the not-so-local

Pros: Lighting and the equalizer are slightly better than the stock radio.

Cons: Lighting is poor, hard to read in daytime. Amplifier and tuner not as good as the factory radio. Too narrow for opening, so it looks tacky.

    Great upgrade

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed in a '06 Mustang GT that had the shaker system. It fit perfectly and I like the style. Great for road trips if you want to find a pacific genre radio station. Had for a month no and no issues at all. The price was the same with all retailers but the difference is that Crutchfield provided all the extra parts for free so that installing it would have no issues. It sounds awesome with the presets but once you get used to using the menu, tuning it yourself makes it perfect.

Pros: menu options, sound quality, customization

Cons: takes a little time to tune it to your preferences

It's a little bit better than the factory radio.

Pros: Looks better than the factory radio in my 2004 Ranger, Equalizer is better than the factory radio. Lighting is slightly better.

Cons: Lighting is actually pretty bad, amplifier not as good a stock radio, FM tuner is weak, unit is nearly an inch narrower than the stock radio so the install kit comes with cheesy-looking fillers to take up the space.

As other have mentioned in the reviews I read prior to purchasing, the adjustments have a bit of a learning curve, but after you learn the variety of settings, the sound quality is well worth it. The stereo totally blows away my stock Nissan 370Z sound system. With the included install kit, the stereo looks like it came standard in my car. I was able to adjust the color and shade qualities to match my interior, it looks and sounds terrific!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in about 1.5 hours using the included kit and install instructions from Crutchfield. These made the install super easy. I am very impressed with the sound quality and tuner over the stock head unit. I found several new FM stations that I did not even know existed. Bought with the XM tuner. Love the built in aspect of having the XM tuner in the head unit. Very clean installation. Great sound quality and typical great Sony quality. Hard to beat this system for the price. I would highly recommend this stereo. Wish there were a little more detail on how to use the XM tuner functions with this unit. Also, as some have said before the setup menus take a little getting used to, but don't let that keep you from getting this stereo.

Pros: All the different sound settings that are built in to the unit. Especially the location settings and sub-woofer emulation you can do with the unit.

    Cons: None.

Significantly improved sound over stock 2007 Sonata stereo with stock speakers. USB to iPhone sounds better than aux. input. App for iPhone5 lacks the control one would expect. Overall a great stereo.

Pros: Low cost with great looks, quality material and amazing sound. IPhone compatibility.

Cons: App not very functional at this time. Needs a significant update to make worth while. Unfortunately I feel compelled to use app because sound from USB much better than from auxiliary input.

Wow! I put this in my Sonata myself using the free install kit and instructions. Very easy to do yourself. The stero has tons of colors to fit any mood. Sounds so much better then the stock unit even with stock speakers. There are tons of options for playback so it will take a while to fully master its capabilities. I love it!

Pros: Plug & play iPod jack and playback using stereo's controls. Lots of colors to choose from. Sounds great!

Cons: Lots of settings and controls may distract you from driving until you figure them out.

For $150 what more do you really expect. Has 2 sets of preamps, high and low pass crossover, 7 band EQ, front USB and AUX input. It's not going to wow anybody over like a touch screen navi will, but this will do everything musically that a touch screen will for less than half the price.

Pros: Price, quality, sound, EQ, inputs

    Cons: none

The lights are cool to look at, but thats about the only cool thing about it. Unless you live next door to a radio station, the tuner is pretty much useless. Sound quality/power for the CD player is awesome! However, the Aux seems to lack the same punch. For the money I guess it is worth it. Way better than the factory unit.

    Pros: Looks cool

Cons: FM tuner sucks! Getting the levels (EQ) and other features set up isn't the easiest thing. Aux port lacks the power that the CD player puts out.

    2012 Ford Escape
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace my stock radio on my Ford Escape. I've only installed aftermarket speakers so far (powered sub and 4 channel amp for the speakers coming), and this unit already added some much needed power to my speakers and they sound GREAT. I can't wait to see what the amp does next. Installing the unit was easy except for having to hook up a wire harness adapter for Ford vehicles (Ford problem, not Sony). Also there are pre amp outputs on the back of the unit for when I add my sub and amp. I love having EVERYTHING in one unit. Satellite/AMFM/CD/AUX/USB. I bought the siriusXM tuner box to keep my satellite radio. The tuner plugs right into the back of this unit, and tucks away, no hassle. 3 sets of 6 presets (can store 18 favorite SXM stations). Now for the girly part- the COLORS are great. The pics on here show the individual colors you can choose for backlight, but the unit also can cycle through all the colors as you play music, and it's a good looking double DIN that doesn't seem out of place in my dash. I definitely recommend this unit. It's got great sound controls, good power, lots of source options, and it's good looking. The only con is the controls are weird AT FIRST. After you read the instructions once it is super easy to navigate the options with the large dial. TIP- Sun glare can make things a little hard to read. I took a MATTE smartphone screen protector and cut it to the size of the display. No more glare issue, still looks great

Pros: Sound,Many Options, Powerful, Pretty, Many source options

Cons: Lack of a number pad 1-9 (only pain when using satellite radio)

I put this In a 2006 Chevy Colo.(a perfect Fit) Very easy Install. The wiring harness matched color for color. It does take some practice using it initially. There are alot of features for sound adjustment and the rear bass enhancer is great. It has the best fm sensitivity of all the radios I looked at and it does pick up every fm station around. The display has all the color options you would need. The cd player goes right back to where you left off when you switch to radio or turn the radio off.(last position Memory)I'm glad it came with a good user manual.

Pros: stock fit-real good sound-many features -and a good user manual

Cons: Initially had trouble getting the rear bass enhancer option to appear in the sound menu. I called sony support and they worked me through it. I needed to use the remote control to get it to work.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace my stock Subaru 2006 Forester stereo. I never complained about the sound of the stock unit, just the fact that there was no AUX port. In this area the FM transmitter method is useless. I am not very skilled when it comes to working on cars, but in less than an hour I had the units swapped out. I also included the SIRUS/XM tuner. I was blown away by it when I turned it on. Super clear, the CD is great, the USB input is awesome for Ipods, and the XM is so wonderful. The remote grew on me, as my car doesn't have steering wheel controls.

    Pros: Clear, loud, USB input

Cons: controls are less than intuitive...I really don't need super quick access to the display menu, which engages at least as fast as anything you would use on a regular basis.

Bought this for my 08 trailblazer and really like it. I've always been a fan of Sony stereos because they last. They might not have the fine tuning capabilities like some other brands but they last, and that's what's more important to me. Overall this is a great stereo. Looks good, sounds good, and has the features I want, plays CDs and has the auxiliary and USB ports. The menu is the only thing that could have been better, it took me a little while to figure it out but once you do, it's fairly simple to get through, not nearly as simple as some of the older Sony radios though. Overall I think it's a steal at the price, it sounds good, would be better if the menu wasn't so complicated, looks cool, lots of different color options, fits perfect and I feel like it will last. Can't go wrong with this stereo at this price.

Pros: Looks good, sounds good, the price, Sony quality

Cons: Menu is a little bit of a pain to use

I like this product for the price I don't think you can beat it. After reading many reviews and doing some research I chose the Sony, in this price range I believe it the best unit for the money. Some of the features are a little confusing at first but you can quickly master this unit. I chose this Sony unit based on the fact that it had the most comprehensive EQ features and radio reception and better RMS than the Pioneer The only draw back is that it does NOT come with a trim ring. I hope this was helpful Yajr

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace the radio in my 02 Ranger. I'm an older guy so all the USB type stuff wasn't an option I was worried about so I can comment on it. What I was looking for was a decent radio to fill in the old double din space and what I got was a double din with a great radio/cd player.

Pros: Sound quality is aces above the old stock unit. Installation was very easy with all of the supplied hardware and took less than an hour to complete. Couldn't be happier.

    Great stereo for the money!

At a low cost for a DOUBLE DIN!!!!!! , you simply cannot go wrong with this stereo. Easy Install. Variable color illuminations, easy menu layout, and many options including In-dash CD player and front panel USB with MP3/WMA/AAC playback, Pandora USB, Tune-In Radio USB (from my iphone app, not mentioned in Overview or Details page - found this out by accident.......awesome!) , RDS, SiriusXM Ready, EQ7 (7-Band Equalizer), and app remote control. The sound quality is a great improvement over the factory installed stereo. The Rear Bass Enhancer function is an interesting setting that puts a low pass filter onto the rear speakers making them work like mini Sub-Woofers to give you that little bit more low end if you don't have a Sub-Woofer installed. The Listening Position function is a great feature and I was impressed with the difference it made when I set the sound stage to be at the front seats.

Pros: Its a DOUBLE DIN for $!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cons: quit your whining people!, its a double din for $.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a fairly good middle of the line radio with lots of good features, and pretty good sound. Probably the only factor that keeps this radio from receiving 5 stars from me is the unnecessarily complicated control menu. In fact, when I first installed the radio (which was made fairly easy with the extras Crutchfield provided) in my 2003 Chevy S10 pickup and turned it on, I was not really impressed. However, after pouring over the included owners manual, and sitting in front of the unit in the garage for about a half hour, I was able to get some very nice sounds out of it. Loud, and precise sound. I still don't think I've got the optimum fidelity from it, so I may update this review later. As far as the often noted display brightness is concerned, I used the dimmer for a couple of days but soon switched back to full brightness so the color would match the boldness of the sound! Love it!

Pros: Good sounding unit. Extensive control over sound and color (albeit very complicated to adjust). Looks nice in the dash.

Cons: Not very hefty. Sound and vision control menus way too deep in places.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall a nice radio for the money, but was somewhat disappointed about the iPhone/iPod integration. The description makes you think the iPhone/iPod integration is awesome and that the controls are built in, but in fact you have to download an App for your iPhone/iPod for the controls. The App is horrible. its very simplistic and very difficult to find songs/albums. No choice for playlist. Looks great in my 03 GMC Sierra and fits like the factory radio did

Pros: Easy to install. Sound Quality is great. Look nice. Lots of Display Choices

Cons: iPhone/iPod integration is horrible. Not easy to use initially. Configuring the setups is a pain and the menus are not user friendly

Excellent receiver with lots of features. Could be a bit more user friendly, but most likely is not an issue for the younger crowd. The big knob is multi-function, including volume, but would be great if one of the functions was tuning. Much easier than finding and holding down the seek button while driving. Display is very nice. Looks like a factory unit in my Nissan Rogue.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good solid head unit with great sound. The unit has the typical tough Sony build quality and it looks great in my truck. The sound quality is much better than stock. The FM reception is great, much better than stock. The settings menus are a bit cumbersome, and take some getting used to. Good solid unit and a great value. Crutchfield's tech support team was great. I had a couple of questions and was able to get someone on the phone very quickly. He was knowledgeable and answered questions quickly. I would strongly recommend taking the extra time to solder wiring connections. It makes for a tight, clean install.

Pros: Build Quality, sound, FM reception

    Cons: Cumbersome settings menus

    Perfect choice for me

MikeC from Richmond, VA on 12/28/2012

Wanted to be able to play through an ipod and iphone on an older vehicle (2005 Toyota Corolla). The stock stereo sounds ok, even has 6x9 speakers in back. I first checked into adding an ipod/iphone connector only, but that costs almost as much as the new Sony, or any other basic double din unit. Plus, I got a more powerful amp and other great features. The sound improved with much more clarity- big improvement even with stock speakers. All the features on the Sony work as advertised- easy to navigate menus etc. Can operate with iphone or the head unit. The install instructions, wire harness and bracket included free from Crutchfield all worked excellent. I normally pay for installs but did this one myself- took my time and was done in about 1 1/2 hours. It fit perfect and looks fantastic. Very happy!

Pros: Look, fit, features work great. Good power and clarity. Can stream Pandora and Spotify. The unit has Pandora controls.

Cons: Not many. One nitpick- when contolling selections through the iphone/ipod, can't use all contols on unit. So, you have to pick how you want to make selections. I have another double din in another car that allows control through either head unit or iphone at the same time. With Sony, have to toggle either/or. If controlling through the iphone, the head unit will only allow up or down to next song.

    A solid double din

a great value head unit with a ton of options for the price. works great with the iphone 5 and spotify among many other apps. when i purchased this unit, it listed it as detachable face. im sure crutchfield will soon be updating that info in the description. even though that was a bit of a let down, i decided to keep the unit still because of all the value i felt like i got with it. sound quality is really good, and even though my stock stereo sounded great, this was still an improvement. good options for a sub even with an 'entry level' head unit. you can adjust the level of the sub independently which comes in very handy at times. there are A TON of color options, almost too many of them if thats possible. the display looks really good in day and night. its almost too bright at night even with it dimmed down. all in all im very happy with it. charges and communicates great with the iphone, has a ton of options, and looks almost factory when installed. im sure once i get used to it even more and make slight adjustments ill be even happier with it.

Pros: works well with the iphone, sounds great, almost too many settings and options, price

Cons: not detachable face, a bit bright, confusing menus at first

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Arrived a day early and was easy to install. With my stock speakers it's a giant improvement over the oem head unit, but probably won't wow audiophiles. However it is one of the better looking double dins available that isn't a touch screen model, and the build quality of it is typical Sony tough. It has a ton of color variations but the dimmer is still a tad too bright and you can't have 2 different colors at once like some models. The equalizer options are all a pretty big pain to get to and lack simple options like treble it seems, the presets cover most styles well though. You can't remove the face as the description says, although I don't think many double dins allow this, plus it means no annoying Sony warning beep when you leave it on. Overall for $150 bucks, this thing is fine. I think it looks a hell of a lot better than the pioneer, so if Bluetooth isn't important this is a good buy.

Pros: -Looks great -Plenty of colors -Good sound quality -Feels built to last

Cons: -Plastic is too glossy in areas, but not all over -overly complicated menus -no Bluetooth

Dynamic Reality Amp: The WX-GT80UI is equipped with Sony's Dynamic Reality Amp to produce 3-dimensional sound staging for more realistic sound inside your vehicle.

CEA2006 Compliant Amplifier: The power specifications for the Sony WX-GT80UI are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the WX-GT80UI are as follows:

    • Continuous Power Output: 17 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Peak Power Output: 52 watts x 4-channels (208 total watts)

2V/4Ch Preamp Outputs: The WX-GT80UI contains two pair of 2-volt RCA preamp outputs. A front pair and another pair that can be set for the rear channels or for subwoofer operation.

Subwoofer Controls: When the unit's subwoofer output is activated, the preamp output becomes non-fading and a low pass filter is activated with a selectable cut-off frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off. You can also adjust the slope (1/2/3) of the low-pass crossover. You can adjust the subwoofer preamp output's volume level independently from the head unit's volume control from -10 to +10 in 1dB increments. In addition, you can select the phase of the subwoofer output from Normal or Reverse.

    • Listening Position: This unit can change the localization of sound by delaying the sound output from each speaker to suit your position, and simulate a natural sound field with the feeling of being in the center of it wherever you sit in the car. You can choose from Front Right, Front Left, Front Center, or Off. You can also set the subwoofer distance of the subwoofer to Near, Normal, or Far
    • RBE (Rear Bass Enhancer): RBE enhances the bass sound by applying the low-pass filter setting to the rear speakers. This function allows the rear speakers to work as a subwoofer even if there is no subwoofer connected.
    • Dynamic Loudness: Dynamic Loudness refers to compensating for volume level & signal gain.
    • DM+ Advanced: DM+ Advanced improves digitally compressed sound by restoring high frequencies lost in the compression process (works only for USB).

Automatic Level Optimizer: Automatic Level Optimizer analyzes each track's playback level & adjusts the output level to optimize transitions between tracks & sources.

Beep Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Display Features

2-DIN Chassis: The Sony WX-GT80UI has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double-DIN"), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets. There is no mounting sleeve included. As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to verify fit with your vehicle.

Dynamic Color Illuminator (35,000 colors): Dynamic Color Illuminator lets you match the head unit's LCD & button illumination to complement your existing vehicle lighting components. With selectable Sound Synchronization, the timing of the color change is synchronized with the audio source. You can select from 12 preset colors (red/amber/m-amber/yellow/white/light green/green/light blue/sky blue/blue/purple/pink), customized color, & 5 preset patterns (rainbow/ocean/sunset/forest/random). The unit's Dynamic Color Illuminator offers the following advance features.

    • Day/Night Color Mode: You can register a customize color for the unit's display and buttons for day & night time driving.
    • Sound Synchronization: The color changes according to synchronization of playing music. When you select a preset pattern sound synchronization becomes effective.
    • White Menu: You can display the menu more clearly (White text) without concern for the unit's other color settings.
    • Start White: When you power-on the head unit, the color of the unit's display and buttons turn white and then the color changes to your chosen customize color. You can enjoy this effect whenever the source is turned on.

Motion Display: This feature shows moving patterns and a spectrum analyzer on the display when turned on.

Auto Scroll: This feature allows long displayed items to scroll automatically across the display when the track is changed on a disc.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Source/Off button once will switch sources. Pressing and holding the Source/Off button for one second will turn off audio output, but the clock display and button illumination remain on. To turn the unit off completely, you must press and hold the Source/Off button for two seconds.

Dimmer: To change the brightness of the display you can set the WX-GT80UI to one of three dimmer modes; Dimmer Auto (dims the display automatically when you turn your vehicle's lights on), Dimmer Off (deactivates the dimmer), and Dimmer On (display always dim).

Auto Off: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you can set the unit to turn off all lighting a set amount of time after you turn the power off. The Auto Off feature can be set to 30 seconds, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or No.

Demo Mode: The head unit's demo mode can be turned On or Off.

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The head unit comes supplied with an IR wireless remote control (RM-X231) for easy operation. The included wireless remote allows you to control the basic functions (not Bluetooth) of the Sony head unit while keeping your eyes on the road.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

I have the Iphone 4S and it should work the same on the Iphone 5. Having connectivity with the USB should charge your phone as well as displaying the phone contents on the stereo screen. [ RENE  Nov 19, 2013 ]
