Our take on the Sony WX-GT90BT by Crutchfield's Ken Nail
Bluetooth® is only one of the cool features in this receiver
Sony's WX-GT90BT CD receiver begins its impressive list of features with built-in Bluetooth. You can pair up your mobile phone and talk hands-free when you get a call, plus you can stream the music stored on your mobile device wirelessly to this Sony receiver — it adds a new level of convenience and capability to your car's audio system. Even cooler, you can choose from over 35,000 colors to customize the big display on this receiver. No matter the model or make of your car, it'll look right at home in the dash.
You can choose from thousands of colors for the display.
Cutting edge smartphone integration
If you've got a smartphone, you know it has a lot more going for it than just Bluetooth, and with the WX-GT90BT you can tap into some of your phone's many capabilities. Sony's App Remote feature turns smartphone interactivity into a two-way street. With your phone's touchscreen, you can do things like selecting sources, picking radio stations, and launching apps. From your Sony receiver, you can select apps using the stereo's source button, the same way you'd choose the CD player or radio as your source. And, with your Android™ phone paired up, this receiver will read any incoming text messages out loud, so you can keep your eyes on the road..
Great sound at the heart of it all
The features are fun, but you'll really appreciate this Sony if you care about sound quality. The WX-GT90BT features an impressive array of sound-shaping tools, including a 7-band EQ, digital time alignment for a perfect stereo "sweet spot," and frequency filters that'll make your speaker setup shine. And Sony's powerful Digital Reality amp, noted for its solid sound output and realistic audio reproduction, will drive your speakers with crisp authority.
More ways to enjoy your tunes
Pop in a CD, plug your iPhone® or iPod® into the USB input, or browse your favorite Pandora® Internet radio stations from the receiver's controls — you've got plenty of options. And you can add on a SiriusXM tuner (subscription required), if you want to experience an unparalleled variety of news, talk, sports, and music.
Want to keep your steering wheel controls?
In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.
Note: Bluetooth compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.
iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Why did you buy this?
Great HU!!!!! Installation was easy into my 2002 Ford Explorer XLT. The only real downside to this HU is the glare from sunlight onto the faceplate, makes seeing the input IMPOSSIBLE. Another downside is the colors are changing even though I programmed it for one color. Actually I tried it serveral times without success It could be a firmware problem but it definitely isn't mine. While I no longer have the car into which I installed this head unity, I didn't have any problems with mine. I used it with an Android phone -- a Galaxy Note 3. I'm not sure that would make a difference in the channels. I would assume your head unit is faulty. [ ALAN A Feb 12, 2016 ]

Dash mount kits, when available, are made for specific vehicle models. At this time, we do not have any pre-fabricated dash mount kits for motor homes. The stereo does not come with a cage or mounting bracket of it's own but it is a standard "double DIN" chassis size (4" tall x 7" wide). I hope that helps! 1 answer What does the Automatic Level Optimizer (ALO) do? Does it operate like compression, minimizing the decibel range of a piece of music by boosting soft passages and putting a limiter on the louder passages, or does it simply raise the overall volume automatically (similar to turning the volume knob up)? I listen to a lot of classical music, where there is extreme volume changes from one minute to the next in the same piece of music. Will this compensate for that, enabling you to hear the quiet parts better in a loud vehicle? Also, does this feature work only for CDs, or digital music, or both? [ Frank Aug 02, 2015 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: Yes, the ALO feature is a form of compression that reduces the dynamic range so that you can hear the quiet passages in some music, especially classical music. The setting applies to all sources including CDs, radio and digital tracks from iOS and USB devices. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy Aug 11, 2015 ] Staff

Should be. I have hooked up iPhone 4,5s, 6, droid razr m, droid turbo, and even my tablet. As long as it has Bluetooth you should be ready to rock. Just select Bluetooth pairing on the head unit and search for the device on your phone. I like the hands free calling I get from it as well. Just a tip make sure you turn WiFi off when paired otherwise the tracks skip. The phone will try to connect to nearby WiFi signals and make the soung bounce all over. It's annoying but can be remedied by turning the WiFi off. I have owned this exact car radio for almost 3 years now with no hiccups. Great head unit. [ GAGE M Jul 10, 2015 ]
It should be compatible with the S6. We have S4 and S5 and it works perfectly with them. [ JOHN H Jul 10, 2015 ]
I have an S3 and have no problems with any of the functions of the Sony. The Bluetooth works great with Pandora and IHeart radio and you can easily make calls and receive them. Sony has an app you may want that works well. I imagine the S6 would work fine being a newer model. I would buy again. I hope this helps. [ ROGER Jul 10, 2015 ]
Yes. Mine would give me a warning when it connected but it always worked. I did prefer to use Sony's "app remote" app from the play store (free) as opposed to the built in Samsung apps. I think so, but don't really remember for sure. Sorry to be vague on this but I traded the vehicle that this radio was in some months ago so can't verify it. What I do remember is that there were a bewildering and, seemingly endless, number of user selected options for the display, and I never found the display overpowering or annoying at night. Best thing about the WX GT90BT is the receive sensitivity which makes it capable of pulling in stations with a weak signal - important for anyone who lives in the mountains as I do. [ JOHN Feb 18, 2015 ]
Hi. If it has such a wire, I didn't hook it up. Because my car's dimmer is independent of the unit. But, the radio has it's own integrated dimmer feature. Hope this helps. [ CHARLES T Feb 18, 2015 ]
Yes it does. As long as your car has a dimmer switch and you make sure you connect the right wires (especially if you use an adapter) it should work fine. [ ALEXIS Feb 18, 2015 ]
3 answers I bought one of these in December, and it's been working great. Aside from one thing: when using Google Maps for directions, the only way to hear the instructions from the iPhone is if the receiver is set to "Bluetooth audio." You can't use any other settings and hear the directions from the iPhone. Same with the feature that notifies you of email or text message - it only functions when the receiver is set to "Bluetooth audio." So the iPhone integration is only functional in one mode. Is there something we are doing wrong? Or is this simply the way this radio works? [ Betti Feb 15, 2015 ]

It works for me if I have my iPhone connected via USB. I had to install an app when I first got the radio, but now whenever my phone is connected and on the USB setting it plays all audio through the stereo (Google maps, text message alerts, etc.). [ ALEXIS Feb 18, 2015 ]
I believe so. Although I have never had my messages read through the receiver so you have integrated the receiver well. [ MICHAEL Feb 17, 2015 ]

Yes it simply uses blue tooth. But there is no button to "thumbs up" pandora songs if you use that. You would have to actually click "thumbs up" on your phone. The way this stereo connects with your phone is top notch! I'm very happy with my purchase. I was hesitant on the big face at first but can't imagine myself with a diffrent head unit! Goodluck! [ CAMERON J Nov 25, 2014 ]
The only integrated app is Pandora. The integrated app adds some functionality like being able to thumbs up/down using the head unit. But anything you play on your mobile device will play through the head unit via Bluetooth connection. You won't have the same control as Pandora, but some functions will still work like pause and skip forward and backwards. Changing of the SiriusXM channel would have to be done on the mobile device. [ SCOTT Nov 25, 2014 ]
Every app we have tried works fine. The few that are listed in the description are the ones the head unit will directly control. All other apps have to be controlled through the device. [ JOHN H Nov 25, 2014 ]

No, it only has a solid blue wire for power antenna or amplifier turn-on. Some of today's smart amplifiers can be turned on by other inputs or signals and don't need to rely on a single blue turn-on wire. [ ERIC Nov 04, 2014 ]
Yes, the Blue w/ white stripe wire is a remote turn on output for an external amplifier. Some head units also have a separate power antenna wire, which you will need to get any reception if your factory antenna is powered. [ EVAN Oct 25, 2014 ]
Mine charges my iPhone 5 when plugged in. [ FRANKLIN A Dec 23, 2014 ]
I have never tried to charge my Samsung Galaxy S4 from the USB port. However I have plugged in other USB Mp3 players and they have charged while playing. Not very fast, but they haven't lost any battery power. [ ERIC Nov 05, 2014 ]
Sadly the USB port does not have the required amperage to charge mobile devices. it does put out the required 5 volts to power memory sticks et al. But it doesnt carry more than like 20 miliamps. this small amount of power is just to signal your devices like phones that there is an interface taking place and is a signal to "handshake" digitaly and sync up. With that said this is an amazing stereo that not only looks and sounds great but also has a lot of flexibility in being able to tailor your system depending on your taste in sound. I would buy this stereo again [ PIERRE Nov 03, 2014 ]

Yes it does. I prefer this over my other plug in chargers. It takes less time to charge my phone. [ ALLAN D Oct 23, 2014 ]

Absolutely not, I have a Mazda Miata convertible with a Sony radio using the same display and I have never had a problem seeing the display. Besides it has countless colors that it can display and you can easily have it randomly rotate or find the color that suits you best. Keep in mind a person driving a convertible should always wear eye protection. My glasses change with the intensity of the sun and have glare reducing, polarizing filters on the lenses. [ ERIC Nov 05, 2014 ]
I can speak to the clarity of the display. I don't have a convertible but I returned this Sony radio because the Sirius radio display of the channel info is truncated (shortened) and is hard to read. I installed a JVC DVD with Sirius with a 6.1 inch screen which is very easy to read in large font. The issue of daylight illumination may still be an issue however. Think of a digital camera and trying to see the LCD display in sunlight. You may have the same issue that the display is hard to see but the JVC will be much brighter and easier to see than the Sony. There is a variable brightness control in the JVC screen that may help also. Good luck! [ WILLIAM J Jul 07, 2014 ]

While I don't own a convertible, I do open my sunroof quite a bit (here in sunny Florida) and haven't ever had any issues seeing the display. The unit has brightness settings and if the user doesn't adjust it to a high setting, then they could have difficulty. [ BRIAN Jul 06, 2014 ]
Hi Dan, I must admit that the display is difficult to read in the morning when the sun shines directly into the cabin. The glossy face reflects any colors from inside the car and thus you can't see the display. Probably not good for a convertable because you well have sun lighting up the inside of your car all the time. [ NATHANIEL Jul 06, 2014 ]

Hi Dan, I apologize, but the link in the email I had received from Crutchfield directed me to a unit that I DO NOT OWN. I had purchased the Sony unit you have asked about, but was dissatisfied w/ certain features and had returned it a long time ago. Apparently Crutchfield's "ask a question feature" does not take this scenario into account. Anyway, my first response was based upon the JVC KW-R900BT, which I currently own. Sorry for any confusion. [ JOHN Jul 10, 2014 ]
Hi Dan, I have not had any problem with the unit resuming what it was playing last when I hang up from a call. The only issue I have, is that it sometimes takes an abnormal amount of time to resume playing my Ipod, whenever I switch to or turn the Ipod source on. Sometimes the delay is close to 30 seconds, but so far, it always eventually starts playing fine. Otherwise, I have been very happy w/ this unit. Hope this helps w/ your decision [ JOHN Jul 10, 2014 ]

No that's not true I have 2 of these units and my son also has one and that hasn't happen. [ OSWALDO Jul 06, 2014 ]
Hi Dan. I just tried this in my car using my wife's phone to be sure about my answer. Using FM radio, usb, and streaming from my phone the unit returns to what was playing when I received a call. The Sony has been a great addition to my vehicle. Just touch the call button to answer and touch it again to end and unit returns to previous function. Good luck. [ ROGER Jul 06, 2014 ]
No. Picks up where it was. [ PAUL Jul 06, 2014 ]
That is incorrect.. The audio returns to whatever was playing when you made/tanswered the call. Actually, and I just noticed this the other day and haven't really proven it to myself yet, but I think that the CD actually pauses and then resumes right where it left off. (I listen to a lot of bluegrass and sometimes it's hard to tell one from the other). I have been well satisfied with the Sony. The only problem that I see is the small buttons issue which has been noted by others and I knew before I made the purchase. Not a big deal but it is easy to hit the wrong preselect. [ JOHN Jul 06, 2014 ]
Yes and no. If you make a call from the radio using the call button it will leave the radio on the phone mode. If you instead make the call from the phone or it is an incoming call the radio will revert back to what it was doing before the call. I think the problem is that when you use the call button it firat switches you to the call mode so when the call ends the last used mode is calling. [ Patrick Jul 06, 2014 ]
I have seen that happen on occasion but I think it's My samsung phone actually. it has a few blue tooth hiccups. My wife has never had it happen while using her htc I have been really happy with the radio overall. My only gripe is that the screen is not a multiple line display but I knew that when I bought it. [ ALLAN D Jul 06, 2014 ]
Sorry, I don't know the answer to that. [ CLAY Apr 26, 2014 ]
The lpf (low pass filter) and hpf (high pass filter) functions are the different levels for the filter. Controls how much high and low end you want to filter out to the speakers. Sub 1,2 and 3 are just different aspects for the sub output. Best thing to do is just play around with the different settings and see what sounds best to you. [ BARRY K Apr 25, 2014 ]
Yes, both actually. When you turn the radio off the first time, the clock stays on; however, you can go one step further and shut power to the whole radio (with no clock) if you wish. It's a solid radio and I love the bluetooth feature. Good luck, Brian K. [ BRIAN Mar 19, 2014 ]
The source button turns off the radio. If you hold it for a short time, the radio will turn off, but the time is still on. If you hold it for a little longer, everything shuts off, a blank screen. You have to feel your way the first time to see how long you can hold it and retain the time. Hope this helps. [ ROBERT J Mar 19, 2014 ]
Yes, but can be turned off if you want. [ TIMOTHY Mar 19, 2014 ]

A microphone is included, you have to check with Crutchfield regarding mp3 players. The Sony WX-GT90BT was a great purchases. [ ESTEBAN Jan 08, 2014 ]
I have one in my 09 Shelby and it is a great sounding and functional Radio. Mine came with a Microphone and it is great for hands free talking. I would highly recommend this product. [ JOHN J Jan 06, 2014 ]
There is a microphone included with the radio that can be mounted to your visor. Not sure about the Walkman, but there is an auxiliary input that will take a 3.5mm plug and a USB jack on the front panel. [ RICHARD Jan 06, 2014 ]
Hi John, it comes with a plug in microphone and about ten feet of cord. It also has clips for the microphone, I have mine clipped to my shift selector and have no problem with it there. You can also run it up to your sun visor or if you have an overhead consol. I am not familer with the walkman but the remote that comes with it works with my smart phone. I think it is a great unit. [ MICHAEL L Jan 06, 2014 ]
The unit came with a mic on a cord to be installed during installation [ SCOTT A Jan 06, 2014 ]
It comes with a microphone that you can mount on your dashboard. The microphone is corded though so you'll need to hide the cable if you want a clean looking install. [ MICHAEL Jan 05, 2014 ]
1) it comes with a microphone and plenty of cord to mount it wherever you need. 2) I'm not sure about the Walkman. It works with iPhones and iPods. It should work plugged into the USB port and via Bluetooth if the Walkman has bluetooth [ SCOTT Jan 05, 2014 ]
I can only answer first question so my apologies. The stereo comes with a mic that hooks up to the back of the stereo. I placed it on the steering column, right behind the steering wheel and works great. The mic has a long cord so you have plenty of slack. It's a great stereo overall. Good luck. [ JUAN F Jan 05, 2014 ]
Sony provided a microphone (which works beautifully); if you purchased the unit, I would like to believe that its in the packaging. Regarding the second question; I'm pretty "old school" and have not yet entered the digital music world, so I can't be any help there...for what its worth, if you're considering a purchase you will be extremely satisfied! [ Charles Jan 05, 2014 ]
A microphone comes with the unit. you can mount it where you want. Mine is up by the visor. Don't know if it will work with a Walkman? I have only used my I Pod. Sound great. [ MIKE Jan 05, 2014 ]
It comes with a nice small mic, easy to run and hide somewhere of your choosing, very long cable. And I use an I phone so I'm not sure about your sony, if it has a head phone jack you can just plug it unto your aux port on the front! It's a great product that gave me a little more boost! [ CAMERON J Jan 05, 2014 ]
1. It has a microphone you place any place you like. 2. I do not know about the walkman. [ COLBY Jan 05, 2014 ]
You will want to contact an Advisor by phone or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if the stock aux port will still work. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you. [ Jeff Dec 18, 2013 ] Staff
This receiver is SiriusXM Ready, so it will not be directly compatible with the Sirius equipment you have now. I'd recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone or online chat to discuss further. They can take a look at compatibility between your equipment and current receivers to see if there is a model that will work well and/or discuss replacement options if needed. I have a regular iPhone 5 and it IS compatible. Works great. Some minor quirks but great performance overall [ JUAN F Jan 05, 2014 ]
Hi Jeff, Unfortunately I do not own an Iphone so I have no idea on compatibility w/ this unit. You can try and contact Sony customer support, but be prepared to be on hold for awhile. Good luck... [ JOHN Dec 18, 2013 ]
Hi. I don't have an Iphone, I use a "Samsung galaxy admire". The unit has no problems connecting through bluetooth. Phone calls don't drop, song stream flawlessly. Just follow the setup that comes in the box. It's been smooth sailing so far! [ CHARLES T Dec 13, 2013 ]
I'd be happy to help, but I don't know what a 4S or a 5S is much less if they are compatible. Maybe some clarification and I'll try again. [ JOHN Dec 12, 2013 ]
Yvonne, I have only used it with my google maps app on my android phone. I have not tried google play or apple maps. Hope this helps. [ BRENT S Dec 15, 2013 ]
Yes [ AMOS N Dec 14, 2013 ]
SORRY DON'T USE ANY OF THAT STUFF, JUST FOR PHONE [ BARRY Dec 12, 2013 ]
I haven't installed it yet..im sorry I can't help..I would think an advisor could answer that.. [ LONNIE W Dec 12, 2013 ]
Yes , it's does with the map app's . If you were using them as navigation while driving the directions will be heard from the car speakers , [ FREDDIE Dec 12, 2013 ]
Not likely, The display is not a general purpose display - it's a fixed layout and function. For example, you will not be able to display a google map on this unit.. [ LEWIS M Dec 12, 2013 ]
both are great but pioneer radio is very weak no for radio porpuses [ VICTOR MANUEL Dec 16, 2013 ]
I considered both of those same units for my Frontier. I went w/ the Sony option and have been very pleased. I can't speak on the Pioneer, but I use my iphone via Bluetooth on the Sony and the music sound transfer is superb. The remote mic works great as well, which was important to me allowing for hands-free phone calls. I only have an iphone 4, but can assume it will be the same with your 4s. Good luck, Brian K. [ BRIAN Dec 09, 2013 ]
I selected the Sony over the Pioneer because of the iPhone capabilities for the 4, 4S and 5. It supports bluetooth music streaming, Pandora radio, and my play lists. And the bluetooth for phone calls is great. [ SCOTT G Dec 09, 2013 ]
when it says "And you can add on a Sirius XM tuner " is that something else I have to buy along with this , I have a XM scrip but didn't know if the radio needed anything else to listen to my XM...thanks [ Kevin Mar 07, 2014 ]
Compatibility will depend on the version of Android your phone is running. Sony's App Remote Technology offers two-way communication between the Sony WX-GT90BT and your Bluetooth-connected Android smartphone (2.1/2.2/2.3/4.0/4.1). You will need to download the free Sony App Remote application from the Google Play App Store. This application integrates compatible Android apps into the selectable source list of the Sony CD receiver and lets you launch apps from the head unit. You can operate basic functionality of compatible audio apps directly from the receiver (operation differs depending on the app). Movie and navigation apps will continue to be controlled from your smartphone. In addition, you can control the receiver's sources directly from the application on your smartphone using simple finger gestures and see detailed source information on the phone's touchscreen. For more details please feel free to reach out to an Advisor by phone or chat. [ Jeff Dec 06, 2013 ] Staff
You can add SiriusXM to this unit with the SiriusXM SXV200V1 Tuner. Feel free to reach out to an Advisor by phone or chat for more details on how this would connect to you receiver. [ Jeff Nov 24, 2013 ] Staff
Thanks for your question Jere. The connection for the power antenna would be the amp turn-on/power antenna connection, and not a separate connection [ Jeff Nov 22, 2013 ] Staff
