Typical Sony product, good value, install went great with the install kit from Crutchfield. I bought it for my son for graduation and he loves it. Can't beat it for the money.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

all in all easy to install and simple to navigate.... still checking stuff out.... would be nice to add my own photos for screen.... biggest disappointament is that you have to drop another 30 bucks to get the wireless remote control.... never even thought to look for it when making initial order as all previous sony stereos I had bought(many) came with it included....... still have to hook up subs and amp... will know more about the system then...

Pros: simple installation with factory install kit... once installed, has nice clean look to it.... primary functions seem to operate smooth... and easy basic navigation.... although a menu/settings button on most screens would be a nice and simple update to adjust those settings quicker

Cons: remote not included, slow start up after starting vehicle.... slow loading from usb drive also.... once loaded seems to go from track to track quickly

I purchased this reciever to replace the factory cd player. The insructions were very clear and the reciever was installed in about 30 min. Would recommend to anyone wanting to upgrade.

Cons: Have to purchase the RC202IPV cable seperately to view videos from the ipod.

    Sony for my toyota tacoma

Mark J from Anthem Arizona on 9/27/2012

Ok unit, does what's advertised, relatively easy instal, Sirius is a dissapointment..

Pros: Good sound, srceen brightness ok, washed out in direct sunlight. Toyota Tacoma instal kit works great, the replacement plastic surround matched well with the factory trim, would recomend getting the black surround vs the grey, the grey looks cheap.

Cons: My sterring wheel interface buttons don't work to change bluetooth streamed music, you can change tracks using the screen buttons, nice that you can control streaming music without having to touch your phone. Did not try Pandora, I used Slacker and Google music. Sirius interface is terribe, only 6 station presets, scrolling through stations is laborious, display cuts off words indicating the station, this is really not well thought out and my biggest complaint..

Nice receiver/player to replace a dead factory unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As always Crutchfield delivers! Our Subaru Forester's factory CD player croaked. Settled on the Sony unit by reading reviews and we are very happy with the choice. The installation with Crutchfield's instructions and wiring harness was a piece of cake. I think it took me less than an hour to solder up the harness, remove the old unit and slide this in.

Pros: Very nice display, not bad sunlight. The front panel is very clean, most input is through the touch-screen. I really like the RDS and ability to search stations by genre. Seems to work great with iPhones. Using the front-panel USB connector with an Apple cable, the iPhone connected right up and navigation is pretty easy.

Cons: No rear panel USB. If I were to put this in a car that I would spend a lot of time with an iPod or iPhone connected or with a manual transmission, I'd get a unit with a rear panel USB to clean-up the wires out the front. The wire off the front would get in the way shifting.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just got done doing the install. I had to come back and do a review because when I bought this thing there was only one, which made it hard to decide. This unit was installed because the original CD player no longer worked, and there was no Ipod jack in the truck. Overall, it is a great unit and makes the vehicle look "updated". I put in a Ford Econoline 15 Passenger so I had some shaving of the dash to do. I choose this unit over the Pioneer DVD1400 due the the better screen resolution. I considered all the entry level name brand I don't care spending more for for Bluetooth, etc. I did give up the remote control, which I did not like having to do. I chose the brighter screen and resolution over features simply because I did not want to look twice at the unit, especially in the sun while driving. Cons: Mounting kit sucks for Fords. But that has nothing to do with the Sony......

Pros: Sharp screen. Plays DVD's Great...Clear and bright........I have heard no noise from the fan yet....... Love the Rear Sub Simulator.

Cons: The install kit for the Ford Econoline kinda sucks. It recesses the unit a bit too far instead of making it look flush like "factory".

    Very Good Unit

Craig from Los Altos, CA on 5/29/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just installed this unit into my 2012 Ford Mustang, and overall the upgrade was definately worth it. The main factors that are an improvement was firstly the sound. There are many options to adjust the sound source, and all easily gotten to via the main menu. One item in particular which was a pleasant surprise was the rear bass enhancer. It sends mostly bass notes to the rear speakers, and now the bass is much more noticeable than before. Plus no need to replace the rear speakers now, they can be heard where as before, they were hardly noticeable. The menu system is very easy to navigate, and to change radio channels or music tracks from a USB device, all you have to do is draw a line on the screen of the Sony, and it will change the station or track easily. That means more time spent watching the road and less time looking for buttons. Also its great to have a volume button on the face of the unit rather than the flat switches some units have. So much easier adjusting the volume with a rotary dial knob. Screen is clear and sharp, and DVD movies look great. Installation was fairly easy, plus its looks great in the car. Overall, very pleased with the unit and I would definately recommend this to anyone looking to go with a DVD receiver.

Pros: Sounds great, easy menu system to navigate to the various settings, and offers a lot of features for the price.

Cons: Did not read the manual and after installing the unit, some features did not work as expected. Then read that you must reset the unit after installing it, once that was done, everything worked as expected. Setting the radio stations for presets is kinda tricky.

    Great unit for the price

epsail from Chesapeake, VA on 4/25/2012

Bought this radio to replace the 2003 factory mazda radio (with factory sub) which was skipping with cd's and very distorted at more than half volume. I was shocked when I got this radio installed and started listening to it. The factory speakers and sub perform so well now that I am tempted not to change them anymore. The center channel simulator works better than expected, and the rear base enhancement does even better! RBE is helped out with the HPF/LPF that works well and has a good number of settings. Install was quick with the extra wiring harness that I purchased. Rear view camera works very well and comes on faster than most factory installed cameras that I've seen. Negative: This unit comes with 4 background images and there is no way to change it for your own. This would be a thousand times better if something simple like that could be customizable. If anyone can figure this out, please contact me and let me know how to do it. Negative: USB playback does not shuffle well between folders. Only way to get a good shuffle is to put all song files in the same folder. Negative: the rear cooling fan was making noise on one cold day until it warmed up. This sounds like a cheap sleve bearing and the fan may need to be replaced in a year or two. Have not yet tested the DVD or Xvid playback. Bottom line is would I recommend to a friend? I would for the price, but make sure you are getting all of the features you want. Bluetooth and navigation not incl.

Once you have downloaded & used the SensMe software to organize your PC's music, you can then transfer that music to your USB device (Not iPod/iPhone) for playback on the Sony head unit. You can select & play a channel that fits your mood from the following categories.

    • Time of Day: Tracks are recommended for each time of day. Choose from Morning, Daytime, Evening, Night, or Midnight.

    iPod/iPhone Control

iPod/iPhone 2-Wire Connectivity: The front-panel USB port and front-panel 3.5mm AV input are compatible with select iPod/iPhone devices when used with the optional Sony RC-202IPV adapter (RC-202IPV, sold separately). One end of the cable plugs directly into your iPod's dock connector while the other end of the cable uses two connectors that plug into the front of the XAV-63. The USB type-A connector portion of the cable plugs into the receiver's front-panel USB port and handles the metadata, control, charging, and audio playback of your iPod/iPhone, so you can navigate through your music and video files using the head unit's touchscreen controls and view song and movie info, as well as album art on its display. The 3.5mm AV connector of the cable plugs into the unit's front-panel 3.5 AV input and transfers the video images from your iPod/iPhone to the Sony head unit. Video can only be displayed while the vehicle is in park. If you require audio playback only, you can simply plug your compatible iPod/iPhone directly into the head unit's front-panel USB port using your iPod/iPhone's dock connector cable (no additional adapter required).

Note: If you have an iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), or iPhone 5/5C/5S; use the Lighting-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect to the head unit. These Apple devices only support audio playback (no video output).

Bypass iPod DAC: The USB Direct Connection enables high-speed iPod/iPhone data communications via the optional RC-202IPV (2-Wire) interface. The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 120dB.

iPod Navigation: The controls of the XAV-63 are seamless when used with the optional RC-202IPV and include metadata browsing, as well as the ability to choose from various playback & search modes to suit your listening application. You can also choose to control your iPod/iPhone from its touchscreen or clickwheel.

    • Head Unit Control: The head unit's Quick-BrowZer feature allows you to browse your iPod/iPhone's music library by Album, Track, Genre, Playlist, Artist, or Music Podcast. You can browse your videos by Movie, Rental, TV Show, Music Video, Playlist, or Video Podcast. You can then search within a specific Quick-BrowZer category alphabetically (A-Z). With the unit's Zappin feature, you can play music tracks & albums in 6, 15, or 30-second clips until you find the song you are looking for on your connected iPod/iPhone. The XAV-63 also supports Repeat (Track/Album) & Shuffle (Album) playback modes.
    • Passenger App Control: The Passenger App control mode allows you to control stored audio/video content from your connected iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen. This is very useful for the person riding in your passenger seat. VThe iPod Passenger mode also lets you listen to your favorite music apps, such as Pandora, iHeartRadio, SiriusXM,, Rhapsody, & Slacker streamed to your iPhone (iOS 3.0+) through the Sony head unit and your vehicle's speakers. You can even watch video on the Sony DVD receiver's touchscreen from streaming movie apps, such as Netflix & YouTube, downloaded on your iPhone 4/4S (iOS 4.0+), via the SonyRC-202IPV iPod cable (sold separately). Video can only be accessed when the vehicle is in park and the hand-brake is fully engaged. Not all apps will be compatible, and you will continue to control all app functions via your iPhone's touchscreen.

Note: Access to your iPhone's downloaded applications will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.

Music Information: The multimedia head unit will display your iPod/iPhone's stored music file information; including Track number, Elapsed playing time, Song Title, Artist/Album Name, and Album Art. The head unit will not display metadata information from streamed music apps; in this case head unit only displays the message "Passenger App Control". You will continue to view song/artist information from music apps on your iPhone's touchscreen.

HD Radio Ready: The Sony XAV-63 is compatible with Sony's optional XT-100HD add-on HD Tuner (158XT100HD, sold separately) through its UniLink Bus connection. HD Radio technology, where available, offers higher quality sound than conventional analog broadcasts and receives text data. HD Radio provides FM broadcasts that are equal to CD sound quality and AM broadcasts that are as good as analog FM stereo broadcasts. HD Radio also provides a variety of data, including station name, song title, artist name, album name, etc. Once connected, all AM and FM broadcasts are received by the XT-100HD. HD appears as an additional source, with five preset banks; HD1 (FM1), HD2 (FM2), HD3 (FM3), HD4 (AM1), and HD5 (AM2). In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting it is possible to choose from up to 8 multicast programs (HD1 to HD8 and analog). There are also data programs for each program.

Note: HD Radio is the system for digital AM and FM broadcasting in the U.S. More than 2,000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. Go to to check for HD Radio stations in your area.

These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the XAV-63 are as follows:

    • Continuous Power Output: 17 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Peak Power Output: 52 watts x 4-channels (208 total watts)

4ch/2V Preamp Outputs: The XAV-63 contains two pair of 2-volt RCA preamp outputs; a front pair and another pair that can be set for the rear channels (fading) or for subwoofer (non-fading) operation.

Subwoofer Controls: When the unit's subwoofer output is activated, the preamp output becomes non-fading and a low pass filter is activated with a selectable cut-off frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off.  In addition, you can select the phase of the subwoofer output from Normal or Reverse. You can adjust the subwoofer preamp output's volume level independently from the head unit's volume control from -6 to +6 in 1dB increments.

High-Pass Filter: The front and rear speaker outputs offer a selectable high-pass crossover frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off.

EQ7: You can select an equalizer curve from eight music types; Xplod, Vocal, Edge, Cruise, Space, Gravity, Custom, or Off (Flat). The Custom EQ7 mode allows  you to make  your own equalizer settings. You can adjust the level (+/-6dB) of seven different frequency bands; Band1 (63Hz), Band2 (160Hz), Band3 (400Hz), Band4 (1kHz), Band5 (2.5khz), Band6 (6.3khz), and Band7 (16.0kHz).

ASE (Advanced Sound Engine): The Sony XAV-63 offers multi-channel playback with its Advanced Sound Engine, featuring Intelligent Time Alignment (ITA) and Center Speaker Optimizer (CSO) to create a virtual 5.1 listening experience to rival the most advanced home theater equipment.

    • ITA (Intelligent Time Alignment): This unit can change the localization of sound by delaying the sound output from each speaker and subwoofer to suit your position, giving you the feeling of being in the center of the soundfield wherever you sit in the car. The options for the Listening Positions are - Front Left, Front Right, Front Center, All, Custom, or Off. The Custom ITA mode allows you to precisely calibrate the output from each speaker so that the sound from all speakers reaches the listener at the same time. Simply measure the distance between your listening position and each speaker from 0 to 13.1' (in 0.8125" increments). You can also set the subwoofer distance of the subwoofer to Near, Normal, or Far.
    • CSO (Center Speaker Organizer): A typical surround sound systems has 5 speakers (front left/right, rear left/right, center) and 1 subwoofer. CSO allows you to create a virtual center channel speaker even though a real center speaker is not connected.

RBE (Rear Bass Enhancer): RBE enhances the bass sound by applying the low-pass filter setting to the rear speakers. This function allows the rear speakers to work as a subwoofer even if there is no subwoofer connected.

Dolby D Level: You can adjust the audio output level for a DVD recorded in Dolby Digital format, to reduce the volume level differences between disc and source.

Beep Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Remote Control

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately).
