Our take on the Sony XAV-64BT by Crutchfield's Ken Nail
Not all Bluetooth is created equal
Bluetooth isn't just about hands-free calling. Sony's XAV-64BT DVD receiver adds audio streaming and control to the mix, letting you make a wireless link between your mobile device and the receiver. If you're a Pandora® fan with an Android or Blackberry device, that means you can pair your phone to the XAV-64BT for complete Pandora® control without ever connecting a wire. You'll enjoy the convenience of hands-free calling, and you'll have touchscreen access to your phone book once your phone is paired.
iPod® and iPhone® control
You can plug your iPod into the receiver's front USB input for direct control and playback of audio files. For video and more, connect your iPod or iPhone into the receiver with Sony's RC-202IPV cable and enjoy playback of video content from your iPod or iPhone, plus view and control compatible apps. Slide a DVD into the front slot to enjoy movies or videos when you're parked, or insert a CD or DVD loaded with MP3, WMA, or AAC music files for hours of audio entertainment.
SensMe™ makes finding music fun
Install the supplied SensMe software on your Windows PC or laptop, and then use it to organize and group the music stored on your iPod or USB memory device. When you're back in the car, just plug your device in, and you'll be able to choose music based on mood, time of day, music type, or even your driving type.
Sophisticated sound controls
Everybody's familiar with the annoying sound of an underpowered factory radio turned up too loud — no such problem with this Sony. Its powerful amp combines with advanced circuitry to make your discs and digital music sound their best. You can adjust the EQ7 7-band equalizer to optimize the acoustics in your vehicle, or use the built-in digital signal processing to enhance the sound of compressed music files.
Great sound for video
Sony's Advanced Sound Engine (ASE) brings your DVD's multi-channel soundtrack to life in your vehicle. The Intelligent Time Alignment system creates perfectly balanced sound, while the Center Speaker Optimizer (CSO) creates a virtual center channel for a true-to-life 5.1 listening experience.
Add on to your system
For more listening options, add a Sony HD Radio™ tuner or a satellite radio. If you're putting together a heavyweight system with external amps, you'll appreciate the multiple preamp outputs and built-in high- and low-pass filters.
Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Sony stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Sony, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.
Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.
Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.
Fantastic value for the price. I have this one and the older model, and both work fantastic. High quality sound and picture.

These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the XAV-64BT are as follows:
- Continuous Power Output: 17 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
- Peak Power Output: 52 watts x 4-channels (208 total watts)
4ch/2V Preamp Outputs: The XAV-64BT contains two pair of 2-volt RCA preamp outputs; a front pair and another pair that can be set for the rear channels (fading) or for subwoofer (non-fading) operation.
Subwoofer Controls: When the unit's subwoofer output is activated, the preamp output becomes non-fading and a low pass filter is activated with a selectable cut-off frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off. In addition, you can select the phase of the subwoofer output from Normal or Reverse. You can adjust the subwoofer preamp output's volume level independently from the head unit's volume control from -6 to +6 in 1dB increments.
High-Pass Filter: The front and rear speaker outputs offer a selectable high-pass crossover frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off.
EQ7: You can select an equalizer curve from eight music types; Xplod, Vocal, Edge, Cruise, Space, Gravity, Custom, or Off (Flat). The Custom EQ7 mode allows you to make your own equalizer settings. You can adjust the level (+/-6dB) of seven different frequency bands; Band1 (63Hz), Band2 (160Hz), Band3 (400Hz), Band4 (1kHz), Band5 (2.5khz), Band6 (6.3khz), and Band7 (16.0kHz).
ASE (Advanced Sound Engine): The Sony XAV-64BT offers multi-channel playback with its Advanced Sound Engine, featuring Intelligent Time Alignment (ITA) and Center Speaker Optimizer (CSO) to create a virtual 5.1 listening experience to rival the most advanced home theater equipment.
- ITA (Intelligent Time Alignment): This unit can change the localization of sound by delaying the sound output from each speaker and subwoofer to suit your position, giving you the feeling of being in the center of the soundfield wherever you sit in the car. The options for the Listening Positions are - Front Left, Front Right, Front Center, All, Custom, or Off. The Custom ITA mode allows you to precisely calibrate the output from each speaker so that the sound from all speakers reaches the listener at the same time. Simply measure the distance between your listening position and each speaker from 0 to 13.1' (in 0.8125" increments). You can also set the subwoofer distance of the subwoofer to Near, Normal, or Far.
- CSO (Center Speaker Organizer): A typical surround sound systems has 5 speakers (front left/right, rear left/right, center) and 1 subwoofer. CSO allows you to create a virtual center channel speaker even though a real center speaker is not connected.
RBE (Rear Bass Enhancer): RBE enhances the bass sound by applying the low-pass filter setting to the rear speakers. This function allows the rear speakers to work as a subwoofer even if there is no subwoofer connected.
Dolby D Level: You can adjust the audio output level for a DVD recorded in Dolby Digital format, to reduce the volume level differences between disc and source.
Beep Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.
Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.
Optional Remote Control: By using the optional Sony RMX-170 IR remote commander (158RMX170, sold separately), you can wirelessly operate the unit's audio and source controls.

Yes Walter that helps a lot! Thank you! [ Mikewil Nov 07, 2014 ]
Mike- I have the XAV-64BT in my Xterra, and the DVD playback is based on the parking brake. The video only plays when the parking brake is engaged. If it is playing when you release the parking brake, the audio continues but the screen blacks out. Hope this helps. [ WALTER Nov 07, 2014 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: You would want to use 4ohm impedence speakers. They will work perfectly. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy Oct 06, 2014 ] Staff

You cannot with an iPhone. I wouldn't think with an Android either. [ TED Sep 08, 2014 ]
No, it's just for audio and making calls. Pandora is the only phone app that it has a designated screen for. [ Jeff B. Sep 08, 2014 ]
Not video but audio will go through system and interrupt Pandora or Bluetooth music streaming but not if using disc. It works well. [ TANIKA N Sep 08, 2014 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: "Best" will depend upon a number of variables, but my go-to camera is the Clarion CC510 mounted using the Clarion CAU001. It has a reasonable 150 degree field of view (horizontal), good low level performance, and it includes distance lines, which many cameras do not. They are not user adjustable, but better to have lines to reference from than nothing. It also comes with 31.5 feet of cabling, so no problems reaching the head unit on nearly any current passenger vehicle. The mount makes it look more like an OEM piece, and is nice, though not necessary. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. What if my car is standard? Will I not be able to use the DVD player? [ Mikewil Nov 07, 2014 ]
Yes. The DVD player will play to remotely connected screens while in drive. The screen on the device will only display video while the vehicle is in park though. [ Jeff Aug 22, 2014 ] Staff

3 answers When using an Android phone and Pandora, can you see album art? When using iPod, how easy is it to scroll around for a particular artist or track? With my Jensen, you have to use the up or down arrow keys to go through the list page by page. My partner's Pioneer lets you drag the list up and down to navigate through it. Does the Sony operate like either of these? [ Angela Apr 13, 2014 ]
No album art is displayed with Android or Pandora, I have not used with an ipod so I can't answer second question. Hope this helps. [ JAMES A Apr 14, 2014 ]
With my android phone yes you can see art when using Pandora. As far as the ipod i can't speak to that because i don't use an ipod anymore. I simply use my phone as my media player but i can tell you that in using flash drives and drilling up or down through albums and tracks you have to use the arrows rather than dragging up or down. For the money i have been extremely pleased and have not experienced any issues and i am coming up on 1 year of ownership. Hope this helps. [ BRANDT M Apr 14, 2014 ]
The car in which it was installed I sold. I don't have an Android phone or iPod so I'm afraid I'm not much help. [ TED Apr 14, 2014 ]
just connect via the USB [ ANTONIO Mar 24, 2014 ]
Can you use the blue tooth with iPod phones with out using a USB? [ Michelle b Mar 20, 2014 ]
Nope [ JOHN D Feb 14, 2014 ]
No, it is a fixed screen and is not removable either. The entire unit is one solid piece. [ MICHAEL J Feb 14, 2014 ]
No, it is a stationary screen. Sorry [ STEVEN Feb 13, 2014 ]
Dennis- I have had this unit almost 10 months and that screen doesn't tilt that I'm aware. They may have had an updated model since then but mine doesn't tilt. [ MARK Feb 13, 2014 ]
