Lots of ways to enjoy your music and video

You'll also enjoy the features you'd expect with a DVD receiver. The screen displays the striking menu graphics crisply, and you'll be impressed by the thought that Sony's put into the touchscreen controls. You can plug your iPod into the front USB input for direct control and playback of audio files. And with your iPhone® connected you can access audio and video streams from many online sources, or even display navigation app maps on the screen. Slide a DVD into the front slot to enjoy movies or videos when you're parked, or insert a CD or DVD loaded with MP3, WMA, or AAC music files for hours of audio entertainment. For long road trips, dual-zone output allows you to send video to a rear seat monitor, while you listen to something else up front.

Match the sound to your car

The XAV-701HD's powerful amp features advanced circuitry to make your discs and digital music sound their best. The EQ7 7-band equalizer lets you optimize the output to the acoustics in your vehicle, and you can use the built-in digital signal processing to enhance the sound of compressed music files.

Integrate your smartphone with your car audio system with MirrorLink™

If you're an avid smartphone user, you know that your phone becomes part of your life. You store and stream music on it, get directions with it, and sometimes even make phone calls with it. It's a shame that you can't easily tap into all these features when you're on the road. And that's why we're excited about Sony's XAV-701HD DVD receiver.

Sony XAV-701HD

Here's the scoop on MirrorLink

MirrorLink needs three elements to do its thing: a compatible receiver like the XAV-701HD, a compatible smartphone, and an app that's compatible with MirrorLink. Here's how they work together:

  • Download the app (prices vary) to your compatible phone. This lets the phone enter "car mode," which provides a simplified graphical interface that's easy to see at a glance and much easier to use — ideal for use in the car.
  • Connect your phone to the receiver using the receiver's USB input and your phone's USB cable.
  • Launch the app on your phone, and tap the MirrorLink icon in the receiver's source menu. The optimized car mode menu will appear on your receiver's screen.

Check to see if your phone will work with MirrorLink

The number of phones compatible with MirrorLink in the U.S. is limited to the popular Samsung Galaxy S III and Nokia Symbian models, but the list growing. Sony is working hand in hand with the Car Connectivity Consortium, a group of manufacturers developing standards for mobile smartphone applications, to certify phones that will work with MirrorLink. While the MirrorLink system has been in use in certain factory stereos in Europe, the list of compatible U.S.-based receivers and smartphones is currently limited — check Sony's MirrorLink compatibility chart for their latest information. But the list keeps growing rapidly, so check back with us frequently.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Sony stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Sony, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

I bought this to replace the radio in my 2001 Volvo XC70. It's not supposed to fit - but if you buy the Volvo faceplate from Volvo ($100) then it fits just fine. There is a lot of stuff to learn.

Pros: Sony makes good stuff. This has just about all the bells and whistles. Plays DVD's and has nice Bluetooth and Pandora.

Cons: Tina buttons are really hard to see (if you are over 50). Lots of distracting "bling" on the background.

    Great value for the buck...

This Sony even makes my crappy factory speakers sound great! Bluetooth works flawlessly with my Note 3 and hoping someday soon so will the mirrorlink. Music videos downloaded from youtube on flash drive look and sound fantastic. I love the touch screen (especially the simple swipe of the finger left or right to seek to next/previous radio station). Very cool and easy to do while driving without taking eyes off the road. I like utilization of more screen real estate vs knobs etc taking up the space. Motorized insert/eject dvd is super cool. And getting it on sale $150 off totally upped my value rating...:)

Pros: touch screen response is perfect, sound and picture quality swipe to change radio stations bluetooth calling and playing music from my phone

Cons: no mute button but no big deal mirrolink doesn't work with Galaxy Note 3

    Great upgrade!

The HU is solid. Before this I used a Sony xnv770bt. That HU was good and came with thr navigation system which was great but the sensitivity of the screen was horrid. Sometimes it would register a touch but not do amything. Just horrid. This HU doesn't have this problem. Its still a capacitant screen. Works beautifully and looks way better. It even has screen animations. Although I wish it would have more or atleast a way to add them. My only gripe with this HU is not primarily with the actual head unit but rather with Sony. How can you offer a navigation expansion but discontinue it almost immediately after release of the head unit. This wasnt a complete problem for me because it turns out that the GPS expansion for the XNV770bt (which is called a xn av100t) works with this unit. You just have to either have the usb cable or if u were lucky enough to have the XNV770bt or XNV660bt you can modify the cable to work with some simple splicing. But if you dont have it you cant remove the icons from the main menu. Same with the Sirius xm.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit itself is great! The touch sensitivity is just as good as my iPhone 5s. The display looks amazing for being a 7" screen. HD radio is a very nice touch. 4.1 surround sound is great for the DVDs it sounds like a true home theater (I do have amped Boston Acoustic speakers and an Alpine Type X sub so it's far from a stock system) but the full EQ makes full use of the speakers and the individual 4.1 Surround speaker setup is amazing. Great head-unit over all!

Pros: Very simple GUI. Easy to setup and install. SXM integration is great! Multicolor display is a nice aesthetic touch. iPod/ iPhone interface is flawless. 2 USB inputs is a great feature allowing an iPhone and USB to be connected at once.

Cons: The TomTom nav module is no longer available so that icon is greeted out and it cannot be removed. MirrorLink only works on some Android phones so I can't use it with my iPhone 5s so that icon might as well not be on the front row. Finally it does not support video playback from Apple devices that use the lightening adapter even with the 30 Pin to lightening adapter. Nothing detrimental however it's all just a little annoying

Good deck especially if you are using the mirrorlink feature although the app for Samsung is not worthy so I downloaded a better version. Just Google "drivelink full mirror" and all is good.

Pros: easy interface ipod function is as quick as my ipod itself mirrorlink is outstanding = why I purchased

Cons: The background visualizations while listening to music are pretty cheesy. I wish I could turn them off.

Been looking for a touch screen deck for several months. I grew up on the sony name and have loved their products. This deck had all the main features I was looking for. Hand free calling and blue tooth connectivity to the phone for playing music. The installation was very strait forward. It was amazing of Crutchfield to throw in the installation instructions. They saved me tons of time. I have the iPhone 5. The unit works great with all the audio play from the phone. But I cannot get it to play any video off the the phone. That is a down fall. Because I cannot play netflix or any video stored on my phone only the audio.

Pros: Looks great. Sounds great. Blue tooth connectivity. Hands free calling.

Cons: No detachable face. No support for iPhone on mirror link.

I have had this unit for almost a year and overall the unit is good and fun to use in most respects. The big problem is the mirror link. I have tried all upgrades, updates and anything else I could think of and mirror link/drive link will not work with Samsung G2, G3, G4. Too bad since that is why I mainly bought the unit. Maybe if you have a different carrier than Spring and a different phone but reading all of the reviews It doesn't appear to be very functional at this time.

Great if you do not need Navigation. I use a Garmin so not an issue. I wish the IPhone 5 would interface with video etc, but I already knew it did not. Backup camera is great, as is the CD, Bluetooth and USB ports. It is not to bright at night and it is visible in sunlight.

Pros: Large screen, 2 USB ports, nice touch screen, tilts, everything works. Adjustable sound fields. Fit and finish.

Cons: No IPhone 5 Telenav App compatability

Pros: Lots of features and applications. Love the backup camera. Someone else stated the lines for the camera cannot be adjusted but that is false. You can adjust the position and length of each line in the settings.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this in 2008 f150. I primarily cared about backup camera, Bluetooth audio and calls, HD radio, charging cell phones, and DVD playback features. It does most of these things very well and with ease. It looked like the unit is highly customizable with eq, lpf, and hpf but not having amps or subs I didn't do any experimentation here. I'm really happy with the look, feel, and build quality of the parts of the radio that get touched and seen. It offers a reserved look that could be mistaken for factory, but offers way more capability. The software for the phone integration is simple, straightforward, and works well compared to unnecessary complexity of many factor systems. Bluetooth audio sounds great and works as it should, no complaints. The HD radio does jitter as it switches between analog and digital. This is my first HD radio, so maybe this is common. I only found this annoying when in low signal areas when it cuts in and out often, such as hilly terrain. in general, I think the factory radio got better reception, but this isn't bad. The screen delivers good picture quality for DVD and backup camera, though it can get a bit dim in daylight when viewing video. I would say this is standard though. I am happy with this purchase and would buy again. Side note, when installing I had a fault in my factory harness and the head unit protected itself accordingly and gave the correct fault code. Good job Sony and Crutchfield for guiding me through this!

Pros: Clean looking install. Does the basics well. Great feel to build quality. Like that battery life, etc..are displayed in small bar when phone is connected via bluetooth. Generally does what it should without many hassles.

Cons: The firmware is a bit clunky, no drag and drop to rearrange icons, and many screens feel like the should have back buttons. When turning on the car and backing up, it displays a popup for bluetooth connection success over the backup camera, so need to wait extra 20 sec for this to go away, annoying and unnecessary. Bluetooth settings for only one phone are remembered. Cannot have drivers phone connected for calls, but passengers phone control audio streaming as many factory units can do

    Good HU

Datastar from Atlanta, GA on 7/7/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Almost returned this HU b/c the interface was iffy, was not satisfied with the XM antena. Connecting the HU was not too difficult after talking with Tech Spt. Purchased: PAC RP4-CH11 Factory Steering Wheel Integration Adapter, SiriurXM SXV200V1 Tuner, & Sony XAR800C backup camera. Some of the connections was not obvious; I'm very techy computer person. Tech spt was able to solve my connection problems in minutes. BT was a breeze to connect to my Samsung GS3 4.1.1 (none rooted) Call quality very good on both ends. Overview says U can use Pandora via BT; I read some post that it didn't work. Default settings is iPhone via USB (There is LIFE beyond the iPhone); I changed the settings to Android/Blackberry via BT and it works great; you even get all the information on the HU. I didn't like the HD at first because I was only able to get 2 of the most powerful broadcast stations in Atlanta. Tech Spt informed me I had to connect 3rd blue (antenna) wire to the mix and the sound is great. MirorLink- I downloaded the DriveLink app from the Play Store and it was a joke with little options not worth the time. I really like it now that I updated the firmware and installed the modified DriveLink App on my GS3 I was not able to send video to the back seat monitor so I will call tech Spt for help on that... I have not tried the USB video and audio options yet.

Pros: Great sound and really looks good; plenty of options

    Cons: No built-in Nav

Great HU if you get a modified drivelink app!

JeffD from New Jersey on 6/27/2013

    2013 Subaru Impreza WRX
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this HU because of the sound quality and the mirror link feature. Once installed mirror link did not work with my galaxy s4. Expected seeing how it's a new phone and not yet supported by mirror link. Downloaded a modified drivelink app for the s4 and it finally connected to mirror link but I quickly found out how terrible mirrorlink is. First mirror link won't allow you to connect your phone and stream music using bluetooth at the same time. If you use navigation it won't let you stream music or listen to the radio. The only way you can listen to music is if you have mp3's downloaded to your phone. This option is garbage. So after uninstalling and installing other modified drivelink apps with no satisfaction I was about to give up, till I realized just how geeky one of my friends are. I told him my problem and within one day he managed to point me to the right direction and nirvana! Now not only is mirror link connected to my phone I can get full mirroring of my galaxy s4 directly to the HU! No restrictions on Internet, phone, music apps, navigation, ect.....! Now this HU is worth every penny. I love it. Sound quality is great touch screen is sensitive enough, not like an iPad but still good. The xm connection is kind of annoying as well because if u want to use presets you have to back out of the xm screen to get to another xm screen to find your presets, once done it returns you to the xm screen with no presets. It's all about finding the right drivelink app.

Pros: Looks amazing, sound quality is great, screen is crisp and clear, once connected with modified drivelink app this HU is great. The eq and the HU customization of sound quality is very good.

Cons: Mirror link is not worth it unless you can find the modified drivelink app. I thought it was because I had a galaxy s4 which not yet supported by mirror link but I quickly found out even s3 users are restricted and some can't connect properly to the HU.

Not as cool as you might think

    bigrobhill from GA on 5/9/2013

Well... The hype tells you can do many things with this radio, reality says no you cannot. 1st of all Drive link is the way you access head unit, there is very and I mean very limited things you can do in drive link and while using drive link. Drive link will let you connect phone and mirror screen in only drive link app. Meaning you can access and look at drive link only on your head unit nothing else except if you use navigation. here is where things get screwy. While in DL (drivelink) you cannot access your phone normally text messages e-mails etc. you cannot listen to the radio, you cannot listen to pandora via the bluetooth wireless connection in fact DL forbids bluetooth wireless and it run simultaneously. So save your money! however if dont use DL pandora streaming is pretty nice with thumbs up and down buttons and song info on screen. hands free speakerphone is fair, everyone says you sound far away or hollow. the reason for buying this is for connectivity to your phone which as of right now it does not do well. Haven't bothered with navigation because I dont want to drive and not have radio or pandora playing. If I had to do over I would keep my money in my pocket.

Pros: Nice looking, active screen saver backgrounds that run while music playing different shapes and stuff, great sound and sound features, big screen.

Cons: no explanation of how to setup DL or settings other than general info. Its either DL or everything else you can listen to stored music files only. I had to modify dash kit severely to install in Double DIN slot, not you typical slide in radio for some reason.

So far so good. User interface is very easy to use and navigate.I love the swipe gesture. Just swipe screen left or right. USB drive loads up fast. Over 600 songs and 55 folders loads up in about 10 seconds. It would be nice if you could remove sources you don't use to cut down on clutter. As you use the different source though it does keep the ones you use most up front so that helps. I do a lot of driving so Bluetooth phone very important. Has not failed to connect yet and very clear on both ends. The other thing that was important to me was Pandora. This has also worked flawlessly never failing to connect. As for the Mirror Link it is a no go. From everything that I have read it is not supported yet in US. Close to false advertising if you ask me. App is available from Samsung app store and loads just fine on phone but just will not connect. One thing that is a little bothersome is there is not a link to phone on whatever screen you are on. You have to select source and then tab over to phone The interface on phone when you get there is great with 6 preset up front to click on. Remote has button to cycle through equalizer setting with one custom setting available. But to actually turn bass output up or down use have to go all the way into setting menu. The screen tilts to several different angles. This feature is not listed anywhere that I could find and only found out about it after DL owners manual.. All and all with a few minor annoyance I am very happy with unit

Pros: Clean and intuitive interface with only minor annoyance Pandora works great via Bluetooth (Samsung Galaxy S3) Tilting screen great if unit sit low in dash. Lots of eye candy. Once you get to the phone interface clean and easy to use. Bluetooth for phone very clear on both ends Clear and bright screen Easy basic install.Comes with several install support options Wow factor is there to impress your friends Seems to be of high build quality. Time will tell

Cons: Could use a few tweaks to interface No direct way to get to phone Would be nice if you could remove unused inputs No support for Mirror link yet Nag screen at start up but all DVD players have it

Sony lack of help was to check that the phone has latest firmware and contact Samsung if it doesn't work. Don't know if other cell carriers allow the samsung app store and Drive Link app, but tells me not supported for my country. Crutchfield and Sony NEED a better disclaimer about MirrorLink. Just cause you have SG3, doesn't mean it's going to work. Try to install Samsung App first. Drive Link NOT available in Play Store. I've tried a rooted cyanogen rom with the drive link apk from XDA, but still same issue. Bluetooth, hand-free calls, and usb jump drive work great. Love the visuals on the Sony. But recommend not getting this for MirrorLink. Does anyone have this MirrorLink working and which Carrier? Seems like people in Europe have more success with it. I see youtube clips with it, but see a lot of other people saying it doesn't work after I've already installed this Sony. Not planning on buying from Crutchfield or Sony again. Feel like I was lied to about MirrorLink. I should return it to get my money back, but I do like this Sony and don't believe any other receiver will do any better with MirrorLink.

Pros: Visuals, hand-free calls, bluetooth, cover art, usb music, Sound

Cons: MirrorLink, Samsung Galaxy 3 issue which says usb not supported when connected to the Sony. Price for something like MirrorLink that seems to still be in a development phase.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, outstanding product! The unit was easy to install. Looks sharp having almost nothing but screen in the dash. I would say that it is good to not that the unit is NOT flush with the dash. The entire face of the screen (if seen on YouTube, it's the motorized part) stands out about 3/4" from the dash's edge. I'm definitely not complaining though since my Tundra dash practically swallows most of it back anyway. Ease of use was rated four stars just because it was a bit cumbersome for me to switch from apps like Pandora to Phone to make a call. But, it still does great. I'm just used to my old radio where the phone was accessible from any screen. Put that aside, it's the fastest and smoothest operation I've experienced yet. Great features, and stunning visuals. The materials it's built with don't look cheap. It's bound to make any dash look fancy. Sharp looking liquid metal trim, and buttons don't feel loose. The sound was improved quite a bit from my last unit. Not sure what makes it work like so, but the music does sound like it's playing at a higher quality. Bluetooth paired up right away, and works well. Callers can hear fine and can't tell a difference on whether I'm in the truck with road noise, or holding the phone to my head. Some people are griping about having to use two cables for the iPhone/iPod, and they're just griping. Yes it uses two cables, though they both plug in the rear and the iPhone/iPod cable uses one end for the device.

Pros: Durable Build Sound Improvement Software Speed iPhone cable included Dual USB! Plays video with Plex, and other sources without MirrorLink!!

Cons: Slightly protruding from dash App switching may be cumbersome

    Overpriced and Underwhelming

While the sound on this unit is excellent, its firmware seems extremely buggy. About half the time I start my vehicle, I have no sound unless I switch sources (XM to FM for example.) Once I do that, sound comes back on. It also does not store Bluetooth information. Bluetooth often does not pair automatically. About 1/3 of the time I have to connect my phone manually. If two previously paired phones are in the car, its a crapshoot which will connect. Usually neither and I have to pair manually. Also the user interface seems very poorly thought out. There are several instances where there is no "previous" screen button forcing you to press "home" and start over. There is also no way to reorganize or hide unused sources. For example, someone who does not subscribe to satellite radio is not able to hide the XM source button. Mirror link implementation is very poor. This is samsungs fault but since Mirrorlink is an advertised feature I wanted to mention it. The only thing that currently "mirrors" is Nav, calls, and on-device music. There is a button to add shortcuts to other apps but its greyed out. Samsung support says that feature is current not implemented in the US version of the Drivelink software I also cannot set a shortcut to contacts. It says I can, but doesn't actually sync the contacts from my phone. All in all, I really regret buying this unit and suggest you wait until at least the first firmware update to see if any of these issues are resolved.

I was very disappointed in this deck. The cost was pretty high for it. I wouldnt even pay 200.00 for it. I hated that the usb cables were just sticking out and that for the iphone one had 2 cables. Also it didnt have any kind of usb port on the face. Call me picky but its my hard earned money and I know what I want. I do appreciate Crutchfield very much for refunding me my order.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit is a huge step up for Sony. User interface is excellent. Sound is great. HD tuner works very well. Too bad RDS is not available for analog stations. iPhone 5 compatibility is limited, but still enough to make it work. No MirrorLink, of course. TelNav GPS works well in audio, just won't display on screen. Bluetooth works well, though. Pandora works in iPod mode.

Pros: Big easy touch screen. Good audio. Good tuner.

Cons: Software compatibility with iPhone 5 is marginal.

I have only had this unit in my car for a few weeks, but so far it has been an awesome unit. Easy to use, paired with my Andriod first try and sounds great!

Pros: Install was easy. Sounds great and is easy to operate!

Cons: It would be nice if the Mirrorlink feature was compatible with more Andriod phones. No front USB or Aux port

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Saw this in the crutchfield catalog and really liked the looks of it and the features it had to offer, so i bought it to replace my kenwood kiv-bt901. Glad I did. The sound quality is superior to the kenwood. Touchscreen is smooth. Menu/Menus are simplistic and easy to navigate through. Ipod control is the fastest I've ever had. Bluetooth works as it should. Built in HD radio is a plus. Not really concerned with mirrorlink since I know the phone I have is not compatible. I'll wait to see what updates will bring. I've always been a fan of Sony but not so much with their car audio. That has definitely changed.

    Pros: Everything

    Cons: None

    My first A/V unit!

AJS from Lakeland, FL on 10/18/2012

I just installed this unit in my F250, it replaced the factory unit. It went in easy and took very little setup time. I connected my RAZR via Bluetooth and everything worked as it should. Seamless wireless music streaming and hands free calls. Popped in a DVD and it looked great on that 7" screen! Plugged in a USB stick and the pics, music and video looked/sounded sharp. Connected my IPAD and i was able to use Pandora app on the radio. You're able to set you sitting position so that you can have a more natural sound field. All the controls are pretty intuitive and you can easily navigate through all the options. I installed a Steering Wheel Control Interface which works flawlessly. I didnt buy this radio for the Mirrorlink app or any of that other app stuff. So, im extremely happy with it, Sony ROCKS!

Pros: Easy to navigate 7" Screen looks great Good sound tuning options Multiple connection options

    Cons: None so far

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this receiver to replace the factory stereo, aftermarket hands free kit, aftermarket ipod/mp3 adapter, and backup camera mirror monitor in my F150. The wiring harness and kit provided by Crutchfield made installation fairly easy Replacing all of those items with the new reciever allowed me to remove a LOT of wiring that was stuffed in my dash from all the aftermarket devices and the radio looks like it was factory installed, thanks to the dash kit. Overall I'm pretty satisfied with the quality of the unit but (you knew there had to be a "but") I am unable to use the mirror link appication at this time. The main reason I went with this unit is because of reading about the the mirror link and that my phone was compatible. It would be nice to be able to use the phone navigation and get rid of my old garmin. Unfortunately, the app for the Samsung Galaxy s3, Drive Link, that is needed to link up with the receiver, is currently only available in 21 other countries and it is unknown when it will be available here in the US. For the same price you could get a pinoeer nav radio, but I'm hoping that I will be able to use mirror link in the near future and then I'll never have to worry about map updates.

Pros: Relative ease of installation with the Crutchfeld kits. Nice display Good sound

Cons: Drive Link app not available for Samsung

Once you have downloaded & used the SensMe software to organize your PC's music, you can then transfer that music to your USB device (Not iPod/iPhone) for playback on the Sony head unit. You can select & play a channel that fits your mood from the following categories.

    • Time of Day: Tracks are recommended for each time of day. Choose from Morning, Daytime, Evening, Night, or Midnight.

RAM 256 MB or more (for Windows XP), 512 MB or more (for Windows Vista or later)
    Port USB

    Connection Internet
Note: 64-bit & Media Center versions of Windows XP are not supported. Not compatible Mac.

iPod/iPhone Connectivity: You can connect your iPod/iPhone to the Sony XAV-701HD via the included proprietary iPod/iPhone cable (RC-300IPCV). One end of the cable plugs directly into your iPod's dock connector while the other end of the cable uses two connectors that plug into the head unit's rear-panel proprietary 8-pin DIN port and one of the head unit's rear-panel USB (type-A) ports. The USB port handles the metadata, control, charging, and audio playback of your iPod/iPhone, so you can navigate through your music and video files using the head unit's touchscreen controls and view song and movie info, as well as album art on its display. The proprietary 8-pin DIN connector transfers the video images from your iPod/iPhone to the Sony head unit. Video can only be displayed while the vehicle is in park. If you require audio playback only, you can simply plug your compatible iPod/iPhone directly into the head unit's front-panel USB port using your iPod/iPhone's dock connector cable (no additional adapter required).

Note: If you have an iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), or iPhone 5/5C/5S; use the Lighting-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect to the head unit. These Apple devices only support audio playback (no video output).

Bypass iPod DAC: The USB Direct Connection enables high-speed iPod/iPhone data communications through the included proprietary iPod/iPhone cable. The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 120dB.

iPod Navigation: The controls of the XAV-701HD are seamless when used with the included proprietary iPod/iPhone cable and features metadata browsing, as well as the ability to choose from various playback & search modes to suit your listening application. You can also choose to control your iPod/iPhone from its touchscreen or clickwheel.

    • Head Unit Control: The head unit's Quick-BrowZer feature allows you to browse your iPod/iPhone's music library by Album, Track, Genre, Playlist, Artist, or Music Podcast. You can browse your videos by Movie, Rental, TV Show, Music Video, Playlist, or Video Podcast. You can then search within a specific Quick-BrowZer category alphabetically (A-Z). With the unit's Zappin feature, you can play music tracks & albums in 6, 15, or 30-second clips until you find the song you are looking for on your connected iPod/iPhone. The XAV-701HD also supports Repeat (Track/Album) & Shuffle (Album) playback modes.
    • Passenger App Control: The Passenger App control mode allows you to control stored audio/video content from your connected iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen. This is very useful for the person riding in your passenger seat. The iPod Passenger mode also lets you listen to your favorite music apps, such as Pandora, iHeartRadio, SiriusXM,, Rhapsody, & Slacker streamed to your iPhone (iOS 3.0+) through the Sony head unit and your vehicle's speakers. You can even watch video on the Sony DVD receiver's touchscreen from streaming movie apps, such as Netflix & YouTube, downloaded on your iPhone 4/4S (iOS 4.0+), via the included iPod cable. Video can only be accessed when the vehicle is in park and the hand-brake is fully engaged. Not all apps will be compatible, and you will continue to control all app functions via your iPhone's touchscreen. Access to your iPhone's downloaded applications will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.

Music Information: The multimedia head unit will display your iPod/iPhone's stored music file information; including Track number, Elapsed playing time, Song Title, Artist/Album Name, and Album Art. The head unit will not display metadata information from streamed music apps; in this case head unit only displays the message "Passenger App Control". You will continue to view song/artist information from music apps on your iPhone's touchscreen.

Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. This unit does not charge the iPad. If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then this unit will not recognize it.

TeleNav App Control: Download the TeleNav GPS app onto your iPhone 4/4S and connect it to the XAV-701HD via the included proprietary iPod/iPhone cable to see directions on the DVD receiver's screen while hearing them over the car speakers. The TeleNav app features a 3D moving map and provides voice-guided, turn-by-turn navigation with real-time traffic and automatic rerouting. You also get Lane Assist and speed trap + red light camera alerts. Multiple route options are available; based on distance, drive time, and traffic. The options for the Listening Positions are - Front Left, Front Right, Front Center, All, Custom, or Off. The Custom ITA mode allows you to precisely calibrate the output from each speaker so that the sound from all speakers reaches the listener at the same time. Simply measure the distance between your listening position and each speaker from 0 to 13.1' (in 0.8125" increments). You can also set the subwoofer distance of the subwoofer to Near, Normal, or Far.
    • CSO (Center Speaker Organizer): A typical surround sound systems has 5 speakers (front left/right, rear left/right, center) and 1 subwoofer. CSO allows you to create a virtual center channel speaker even though a real center speaker is not connected.

RBE (Rear Bass Enhancer): RBE enhances the bass sound by applying the low-pass filter setting to the rear speakers. This function allows the rear speakers to work as a subwoofer even if there is no subwoofer connected.

4.1ch Speaker Level: You can adjust the volume level of each connected speaker individually.

Dolby D Level: You can adjust the audio output level for a DVD recorded in Dolby Digital format, to reduce the volume level differences between disc and source.

Yes you can play the music videos from the iPhone 4S. [ DARRYL  Mar 10, 2014 ]
You can play movies, videos, etc on the screen using an Iphone 4. Just used the supplied cable and just plug your phone into it. [ ROBERT  Mar 07, 2014 ]
This thing is not a pile. When you buy it understand mirror link and Telenav are android interface apps and it says that in the specs. [ CHASE  Mar 07, 2014 ]
    Yes it does. [ CHASE  Mar 07, 2014 ]
Yes, provided you have all of the hookups done correctly. [ GARY S  Mar 07, 2014 ]
    Yes [ GARY  Mar 07, 2014 ]
This thing is pile - do not buy it. Mirrorlink does not work. TELENAV does not work!!! Sony no longer supporting their technology. Waste of money. I am a lifelong Sony supporter in car audio and home a/v. NO MORE!!! [ FREDERICK J  Mar 07, 2014 ]
It does come with a cable that works with ipods and iphones, I'm just not entirely sure about it for the telenav interface seeing as I don't use it. You'll have to do a little more searching for the answer you are looking for. I hope what I have mentioned will help you a little at least. After all, every little bit counts when researching products. [ RAMONA  Jan 28, 2014 ]
Daniel, UPDATE This cable came with mine but is needed for the iPhone 4S connection. Sony RC-202IPV [ DARRYL  Jan 27, 2014 ]
Excuse my first reply, but yes it is enough but you have to subscribe to telenav and it will work well [ GARY  Jan 27, 2014 ]
Hi Daniel, The supplied cable works well with the 4S and Telenav. I have only used it for a short trip of 30 minutes. The 4S is my wifes' so I just checked to see if it would work and it does. It doesn't work with the 5 or the 5S b/c the lightening connector is digital and the connection to the XAV-701HD is analog. I used MirrowLink with my Galaxy S3 often and it works good with Google Maps.(had to download a modified DriveLink App b/c the one in the Play Store is limited.) Hope this is helpful. [ DARRYL  Jan 27, 2014 ]
To use the full video functions you will need the optional USB cable sold separate. To use the full video you have to open the Telenav app first on the phone then on the radio. After both are open you have to open the appremote app then select netflix otherwise the video will not show and it will just be audio [ ADRIAN M  Jan 27, 2014 ]
Hello, the aftermarket cable is a plus!! Ur phone will work great with the unit in app mode [ GARY  Jan 27, 2014 ]
Tanks for asking but I never make my 4s work with the telenav app and when I was thinking on doing it my stereo system got stolen to bad [ ROLANDO  Jan 27, 2014 ]
Question#1 Why no FM sensitivity specification on the datasheet? Question#2 Cannot determine if NFC is supported on this receiver, if so, is that simply a quicker way to pair the phone to the receiver HU? Question#3 First a comment: Concerning the MirrorLink standard, As best as I can tell Samsung's HTC-1X uses a technology called "HTC Connect, or HTC Blinkfeed" which uses a micro-USB 2.0 (5-pin) port with mobile high-definition video link (MHL) for USB or HDMI connection SO, now the the HTC-1 compatible, i.e. will what I see on the Smartphone (HTC-1 be replicated onto the receiver's HD screen? question #3 is the most important question, if the HTC -1 will not connect to the HU, I must look for a different HU. Thanks, Dave [ David  Jan 31, 2014 ]
Yes you can customize it with a background. However you can only do that on the home screen. That's the one in the picture. You have to save the picture on a usb flash drive and upload it to your stereo. Hope this is the answer you were looking for. Anymore, just feel free to ask. Merry christmas. [ RAMONA  Dec 20, 2013 ]
Not sure, cause I just have it default. [ PHUONG M  Dec 20, 2013 ]
Yes you can load from a usb flash drive. Thanks [ ELTON  Dec 20, 2013 ]
Do not buy this unit. I am a lifelong Sony guy but this thing is junk. Mirrorlink doesn't apply to 90% of the phones out there. Navigation is no longer supported by TELENAV and Sony's answer, "too bad." The wire harness for the RCA outputs is poorly deigned and extremely fragile. I'd go Alpine for a DVD/NAV unit. [ FREDERICK J  Dec 20, 2013 ]
