Our take on the Sony XAV-712HD

Built-in Bluetooth sets up a wireless link between the receiver and your mobile device — and if you ask me, that's a necessity for your car stereo. You'll enjoy the convenience of hands-free calling, and you'll have touchscreen access to your phone book once your phone is paired. You can stream music stored on your phone using the receiver's audio streaming capabilities, too. And if you're a Pandora® fan with an Android™ device, you can pair your phone to the XAV-712HD for complete Pandora® control without ever connecting a wire.

Lots of ways to enjoy your music and video

You'll also enjoy the features you'd expect with a DVD receiver. The screen displays the striking menu graphics crisply, and you'll be impressed by the thought that Sony's put into the touchscreen controls. You can plug your iPhone® into the front USB input for direct control and playback of your music, access audio and video streams from many online sources, or even display navigation app maps on the screen — the XAV-712HD has an HDMI input for compatible phones to make connections easier, though you may need extra cables for some phones — check "Details" for more info.

Slide a DVD into the front slot to enjoy movies or videos when you're parked, or insert a CD or DVD loaded with MP3, WMA, or AAC music files for hours of audio entertainment. For long road trips, dual-zone output allows you to send video to a rear seat monitor, while you listen to something else up front.

The EQ7 7-band equalizer lets you optimize the output to the acoustics in your vehicle, and you can use the built-in digital signal processing to enhance the sound of compressed music files.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

Nice unit, just needs to have iPhone Mirroring.

    Pros: Works with android mirroring

    Cons: Does not mirror IPhones

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's a nice unit. Mirror Link does not work with IPhones even though the Sony website lists this unit as "compatible " with IPhones. Also kind of annoying to get a warning screen every time you start the car, then it beeps and gives an error box to tell you that Pandora is not Bluetooth capable (every time). That being said, it's a nice unit for the price.

Pros: Sounds decent even with factory speakers

Cons: If you want IPhone control look for a unit that has CarPlay

The old one (Sony XAV-701HD) was better for me.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the money I paid this is a pretty good deal... Just not for me. Going from a Sony XAV-701HD, this unit is like taking a step backwards. Sure it has a HDMI connection but doesn't charge or control my Ipod classic like the 701 does, it just connects by usb. Those are literally the only differences overall that I can tell. The mirror link still doesn't work with newer Android phones as well. So out with the new and back in with the old.

Pros: The menu screen scrolls all the way through instead of going to the end and stopping. HDMI options are pretty good.

Cons: No Ipod control/charging Mirror link still doesn't work with newer Android phones.

    Lacking firmware updates

Anonymous from El Paso, TX on 8/14/2017

First off...there can be improvements made specifically in the firmware. Now that Pandora premium has a back button to restart a song, the head unit doesn't. Sony has only released one update and that was in 2014. There are a few glitches in the interface especially trying to use the Pandora app. ill have to open, close, then open the app on my phone to get it to connect. The Mirrorlink will only work with a few phones. The crossover functions should be accessible through the EQ level adjustment. You have to go to the settings menu to get to it. Other than that its a great unit. Sony needs to work on some firmware updates. I regret buying this unit.

    Pros: Great sound and look.

Cons: Could use better interface and firmware updates. Especially the Mirrorlink.

I love this radio/head unit. Only had to do slight modification to my car for this to work properly

Pros: Great sound, bass, and picture

Cons: I'll need new speakers soon. Factory equipment isn't ment for long usage with this unit.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

There's a lot of things I didn't like about the stereo. Its too slow on the start up and that warning about watching videos is always there which I find it annoying . It doesn't accept iPhone 7 as a mirror link which if I would have known I would have purchased it because I have nothing but apple products. Its hard to make it fit in my truck (Tahoe) because all the extra wires in the back. Overall I wish I can return it.

    Excellent Head Unit

Enrique from Denver, CO on 6/12/2017

    2014 Chevrolet Cruze
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit exceeded my expectations. I was seriously debating going with another product, but the specs and the good reviews convinced me to buy it and I'm only disappointed in the fact that my cellphone doesn't work with this deck for MirrorLink. If you're going to buy this deck based on being able to replicate and control your phone via HML or MirrorLink, make sure your specific type of phone is supported first. You can find the compatible smartphone models easily on Sony's website. The Bluetooth was tedious to connect to the first time around. Once connected, it connects instantly, there's no lag, and the sound is crystal clear. Phone calls are great. USB works great. 1 time music library update and you're music is indexed. Built in audio controls are perfect to fine tune your mids, tweets, and subs. Only bad thing that I didn't like is the massive amount of wiring that is involved with this unit once all the harnesses are wired together. I somehow managed to neatly tuck all the wires away below the vent/AC ducts. It's an awesome head unit for the price. I highly suggest it as an excellent option when researching head units.

Pros: Connectivity Audio options and clarity

Cons: Haven't found anything useful to gripe about yet. But I'm working on it. I must warn you, I may not succeed.

Quality sound, lots of features, really like the graphics. DVD player quality is great, I have the video out hooked up to a TV mounted under the deck lid, works great. Only draw back is I have not been able to use the mirror link with my Samsung S7. Have not had the time to see if Sony has a fix or not.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice stereo. Lots to get used to. Factory speakers went instantly. Overall a good purchase. Factory Bluetooth microphone did not work as stated it would. No connection for rear view mirror screen to redirect to screen on stereo. Still don't have these options. For the price of the install kit these should have been included. Limited space behind receiver for all wiring.

Pros: Sounds great. Nice display. Touchscreen is nice.

Cons: Lots of distraction. Limited space for all of the wiring. Not happy with Bluetooth or rear camera.

    Great features and excellent sound

    2007 Chevrolet Avalanche
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall it is a great unit for the mid priced models. It has every feature that I care for and will use. Bluetooth for playing music and hands free calling, connecting ipod or iphone via usb and player music, and playing a dvd for my passengers to watch. I have honestly not tried the mirror function yet cuz I am waiting on the specialized cable for hdmi to lighting and i hope it performs as expected. I will post update later. The sound is fantastic and soo much can be done with EQs, sound placement in vehicle, bass enhancement and just overall clarity over stock unit. I can't really compare to other units since this is my first aftermarket stereo, I always use factory units but since I just got an older car without modern car features I went with an aftermarket. Some of the cons, at least for me, install does take awhile and could not get perfect like i like. There is so much stuff with all the wiring harness for stereo, then for steering wheel control, then for running hdmi and USBs out the back under a binch of middle consoles where I have mine, and also wires in the back for rear view camera, outside monitor, and the rca harness. Could barely get all that to fit in dash. I soldered all connection and wrap with heatshrink but occasionally i would lose power to unit if i smashed a wire or two so it took forever to find the right way to squeeze in everything. I also hate the rca harness in the back that takes up too much room but i had to use it since i had back up camera SMH

Pros: I love the dual zone controls for rear seat entertainment, lots of EQ and sound options, mirroring capabilities for your phone if you have right cable. Love the large touchscreen. Great clarity and control options

Cons: There are alot of harnesses for unit which complicates install, i hate the message that comes on at the beginning all the time that you have to press ok for. It does not automatically connect bluetooth for me if that was the last thing being used when i turn off truck, have to redo it manually.

    Great Factory Upgrade

    2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Amazing receiver for the money! I don't plan on going too overboard with upgrading my stereo, but this alone made even the factory speakers sound better. Having Pandora support over BT for Android and having HD Radio were really the selling points for me, and now I have the ability to add a backup camera, or and amp and sub as well. Also, being able to change the color that the buttons light up is a nice touch, so now they light up the same color as the rest of my dash. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a mid-tier head unit, especially if you catch it on sale like I did.

Pros: Easy to use, tons of options, great sound, adjustable button color

Cons: Lots of cables to fit behind the dash. Can be difficult if you don't have too much room.

I love the screen size, fits nice in my Ford F150. Good easy screen navigation, I like the fact that I can change the background to a subtle color, I dont care for alot of flashy colors and busy colors, I can make it look stock.

Pros: large screen, great features, easy navigation

Cons: would not support mirrorlink from my samsung s7, i was hoping to use navigation from my phone

    Solid effort from Sony

AneshR from Toronto, Canada on 12/26/2015

    2005 Hyundai Santa Fe
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's a solid deck, that allows custom sound and works well. Minor complaints are on the lack of a screen dimmer that's easily accessible or a night mode for the panel - you have to fiddle around with it in settings and that's not advisable when the vehicle is moving. Its cool factor is up there though, and it's pretty slick with the touch screen. DVD mode is great, crisp and clear. Even the installer was impressed with it!

Pros: Ease of use, cool factor, touch screen responds well, fantastic sound.

Cons: Lack of "OFF" button apart from on the remote, no auto-screen dimming for night time - glare can be pretty intense.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Needs to support more devices for screen mirror. i realize it is not a Sony issue with MHL but if it is not supported you don't get the features expected. Sony android app remote and link are a pain always running and draining battery. would love Google maps/navigation to display on screen by extending phone display.

Pros: Easy install, clean look, good sound through internal amp, nice remote integration with factory steering wheel, supports Bluetooth audio.

Cons: No real android interface without MHL compatible device and adapter. Bluetooth audio skips occasionally to frequently.

    Better than factory.

    2006 Pontiac GTO
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I own a 2006 Pontiac GTO. The stock radio came with AM/FM and CD functionality, no usb, not even aux, so I replaced it with a cheapo unit option and it worked for a while but I decided it was time for a serious upgrade. I wanted something that had a touch screen and worked with my Galaxy S4, had a rear-view camera and offered some navigation and this one looked like it fit the bill. I installed it myself. Since I had already installed a head unit before, it was pretty straight forward, power, dimmer, speakers, ect. It does need an adapter to work with steering wheel controls. Once installed, everything seemed to work fine. Rear view camera turns on automatically when I put the gear stick in reverse, video quality is decent. Even has some adjustable trajectory lines. You can also use it to view the video feed through the menus, but your handbrake needs to be engaged, as with any video sources. HD works, and includes RDS data, song, artists, even album art on available channels. Visualizations are a bit 90s and a tad distracting when driving. Then we get to the bluetooth. phone call functionality work fine on my Samsung GS4, but I have had issues getting the streaming audio to work. I had it working once and then that option disappeared on me. BT was no longer available as a source. Mirrorlink is also not technically compatible with my phone and I had to download a hacked version. Google maps does work but the phone screen must be on to display. Hard to switch back and forth.

Pros: Good quality. Touch screen is responsive. Comes with 2 USB inputs, one high charge for faster charging. HD radio has good RDS. Works well with back-up camera. Plethora of sources to choose from.

Cons: Audio visualizations are a bit distracting. Samsung Galaxy S4 not compatible with mirrorlink and needs a hacked version to work. Once in mirrorlink, all other radio functionality is hidden and a bit inconvenient to switch back and forth while listening to radio. Screen of phone needs to be on in order for mirrorlink to work. No 3.5mm aux input, needed a red and white RCA cable to minijack converter to use traditional aux. Bluetooth audio streaming is having issues with GS4 phone, call wo

I love it! Bluetooth works with my Motorola Droid Razr Maxx HD. No need to get an Apple, Samsung or Sony phone! Handles phone calls, and streams MP3s directly from my Android phone. I also have s 32GB San disk (MP4s, MP3s, etc) the plays well with the unit. With a HDMI cable connected, the phones screen plays on the unit and I can run the Google Maps for navigation (if I ever needed it in Hawaii). Cruthfield had a great deal when I bought mine! I got a free Rear View Camera ($200 value), mounting kit for my 2010 Honda CR-V and FREE SHIPPING (to Hawaii!) in the deal.

App Remote Technology: Sony's App Remote Technology offers two-way communication between the Sony XAV-712HD and your USB-connected iPhone (iOS 5.0+) or Bluetooth-paired Android smartphone (OS 2.2+). You will need to download the free Sony App Remote application from the Apple App Store or the Google Play App Store. This application integrates compatible Apple iOS and Android apps into the selectable source list of the Sony CD receiver and lets you launch apps from the head unit. You can operate basic functionality of compatible audio apps directly from the receiver (operation differs depending on the app). Movie and navigation apps will continue to be controlled from your smartphone. In addition, you can control the receiver's sources directly from the application on your smartphone using simple finger gestures and see detailed source information on the phone's touchscreen.

    • Receiver Sources: The App Remote lets you access the head unit's Tuner (AM/FM), CD, iPhone, Bluetooth, and Aux sources from your phone's touchscreen. You can use finger gestures to tap, flick left/right, or flick up/down on the phone's touchscreen in order to change AM/FM Band, Play/Pause a track, Seek Up/Down a track or station, select a Preset, or access an Album. You will also be able to see song/artist information from MP3/WMA/AAC and smartphone sources, as well as station identification numbers from AM/FM radio.
    • Compatible Apps: The App Remote also provides various music, movie, and navigation apps which can be accesses from the Sony XAV-712HD's source list. Available operation differs depending on the application.
      • Music Apps: Music apps include; Pandora, AUPEO!, iHeartRadio, MOG, and TuneIn. The head unit only provides basic Play/Pause functions and no song/artist information for these music apps.
      • Movie Apps: Movie apps include Netflix and YouTube. Video will be displayed on your smartphone's screen, while the audio plays through your vehicle's speakers. You can control Play/Pause from the XAV-712HD. Other playback functions will need to done on your smartphone. Subscription may be required. You should not watch videos while your vehicle is in motion.
      • Navigation Apps: Supported navigation apps include Apple Maps, Google Maps, Waze, and MotionX GPS Drive. The map screen will display on your smartphone's touchscreen, while audible directions can be heard through your vehicle's speakers. You can continue to listen to music streamed from your smartphone while navigating; the unit will attenuate your music during a navigation voice-prompt. Control of the navigation apps will still be done through your smartphone's touchscreen. Fees may apply for some navigation apps & functions.
    • Voice Communication + Notification Readout (Android only): Exclusive to Android devices, App Remote technology for the XAV-712HD head unit adds a voice user interface for voice control of apps and functions such as navigation and music playback, notification readouts including RSS feeds, Twitter, and text message reply. Through voice operation, you can safely and comfortably operate your smartphone in the car from the Sony XAV-712HD DVD receiver. Incoming SMS/E-mail and Twitter/Facebook/Calendar notifications are automatically read aloud through the Sony XAV-712HD and your vehicle's speakers to keep you in touch.
    • Custom Sound Settings: From your Android smartphone remote screen, you get access to audio & DSP settings (Equalizer, Volume Control, Fader/Balance/Subwoofer, and Listening Position).
Note: Access to the music, movie, and navigation apps will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately).

IR Remote Control: The Sony multimedia head unit comes supplied with an IR wireless remote control (RM-X271) for easy operation. The included wireless remote allows you to control the basic functions (not Bluetooth) of the Sony head unit while keeping your eyes on the road.

What kind of phone do you have?

Written by Alexander Hrabe, Copywriter, on 10/2/2014 1:00:00 PM

Sony's XAV-712HD is a solid receiver, but if you have the right phone, it could be great. All credit is due to Sony's incorporation of MirrorLink. While the list of smartphones that are compatible with MirrorLink is short, the inclusion of a few of the most popular Android phones on the market - the HTC One (M8), the Sony Xperia Z2, and the enduring Samsung Galaxy S3 - still makes this a convenient choice for a lot of people.

Like Apple's CarPlay, MirrorLink provides a customizable, stripped-down interface for the three smartphone functions we all need most in the car: calling, music playback, and navigation. Contemplating my own distracted driving habits and toying with the XAV-712HD, I felt a significant pang of stereo-envy.

MirrorLink's greeting screen has personality and handy info like the day's weather forecast and upcoming calendar events. The calling screen is straight-forward; the music screen allows easy navigation of stored music files and the ability to assign favorites; and the navigation feature lets you access Google Maps just as it appears on your phone. With the exorbitant number of options on smartphones and touchscreen receivers these days, using such an uncomplicated interface was actually a relief.

Sony rounds out the XAV-712HD with standards like a Pandora interface, HD Radio, SiriusXM compatibility, a good Bluetooth Audio interface, and hands-free calling. App Remote is included as well, but I have yet to be entirely sold on the feature. Much of what you can do within App Remote, you can do nearly as easily outside of App Remote. The big exception there is fun app access to stereo EQ settings and Listener Position Calibration. And in the case of the XAV-712HD, I actually preferred switching stereo sources using App Remote on my phone to using the receiver's LCD touchscreen. I found the 3D menu layout on the receiver to be cumbersome and not as responsive as I would have liked, but that may not be an issue for everyone.

All told, the sleek build of this stereo, the addition of MirrorLink, and a whopping 3-year warranty might make this the perfect choice for certain Android-users out there.

Great radio, unfortunate that the Xperia Z phone I was connecting it to was not as great. Miss some of the mirror link functionality. Sound is good but the HD radio often goes in and out of HD which is like a cd skipping, annoying. Other HD radios on the same stations in the same area do not do this. All other functionality is good [ BERNARD  Dec 23, 2015 ]

Yes, is the short answer. In reality, if you don't answer, the warning times out fairly quickly and goes right to the previous screen. I find the UI very friendly though I recommend turning off the beep. There are two options for display. I prefer the large icons. [ Xuemei  Jul 21, 2017 ]

Bluetooth works for playing/phone but other mirror link is not compatible. Backup camera works fine and is adjustable. [ Derek  Dec 17, 2014 ]
Bobby M: The SONY XAV-712HD is most likely all the receiver/head unit you will ever need unless there is some technology that comes along that this unit cannot interface with. I am using factory speakers and employed the sound field listening feature -- this unit is fantastic. At 52 watts, this is just fine until I can add upgraded door speakers, satellite tweeters, and a sub. The cell interace is great. Mic placement was very easy. Bluetooth is clear and must have some noise cancellation because my calls are very audible and noiseless. Installation was a breeze. The interconnecting harness was adapted very easily, too. Have not interfaced the back up camera yet -- not a real necessitity in a pick up. Go with this and you will not be dissapointed. I highly recommend this SONY. [ GREGORY L  Dec 16, 2014 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: This unit offers what is called "Quick-BrowZer". That allows you to search for a track on a connected USB device easily by category (Genre, Artist, Album, or Playlist). I wouldn't expect to be as simple as changing the channel on your TV, it will depend on how much media is on the USB thumb drive. It will take some time to load, and some time to navigate. This unit is easier than most, and it offers features ensuring ease. I hope this information helps. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy  Nov 10, 2014 ]  Staff
