Our take on the Sony XM-604M

When it comes to buying audio equipment for your boat, you need gear that's tough enough to withstand abuse from the waves, the sun, and whatever else the weather may bring. Sony's XM-604M 4-channel marine amplifier handles all that with flying colors so you can enjoy great music out on the water.

When it comes to buying audio equipment for your boat, you need gear that's tough enough to withstand abuse from the waves, the sun, and whatever else the weather may bring. Sony's XM-604M 4-channel marine amplifier handles all that with flying colors so you can enjoy great music out on the water.

The XM-604M features a special coating that protects the circuit board against damage from mold, mildew, and moisture, while gold-plating helps the RCA connectors resist corrosion. You can expect long-term durability from this well-tested design.

The highly efficient power supply ensures that you get stable, regulated output power for clear, unmuddled sound. The built-in high- and low-pass filters direct different frequencies to the appropriate speakers for maximum system efficiency. If you're using the speaker-level inputs, the amplifier powers up automatically when it senses a signal so you don't have to run a separate turn-on wire. You can bridge the amplifier's rear channels, turning it into a 3-channel amp.

Plenty of power for the price

John from Rochester, NY on 12/19/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The price of this unit attracted me. It had plenty of power for what I was going to do in a marine enviroment. It is powering 2x JL 7.7's and 2x JL 6.5's in the cockpit of my boat so the power requirements matched right up. Sounds great and I am very satisfied. The only negative I could say is that it's a big unit, bigger than I anticipated. Making modifications for a location to mount this amp was the bulk of the install. I don't have any reservations recommending this unit if you are looking for a decent amp at a great price.

Pros: Power Price Quality

Cons: LARGE unit

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Amp works great and and extremely happy with the output. The materials the amp is made from appear to be marine quality. I love it and was simple to install and wire up. Thank you!

Pros: Easy to install!

Cons: Hard to work with my existing boat wiring squirrels nest.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Much more powerful than I expected! Need bigger speakers now. Anxious to see how it holds up.

Pros: Easy install. Very reasonable price.

Cons: None yet.

Rockin the water

Craig from Coralville Rez on 9/20/2011

Got this amp in the spring of 08. used it with 4 infinity 612m speakers and no sub in the boat. We added 1 deep cycle battery to the boat. We could crank it up and jam all day. Most every one couldn't believe we only had one amp as great as this sounded. Amp is still working great and we have never had a dead battery after a day on the water.

Marine Amplifier: The Sony XM-604M marine amplifier is designed to be used in the harsh marine environment. It features specially conformal coated circuit boards and gold-plated connectors that resist mold, mildew, and moisture damage.

Pulse Power Supply: This amplifier has a built-in power regulator which converts the power supplied by the 12 V DC marine battery into high speed pulses using a semiconductor switch. These pulses are stepped up by the built-in transformer and separated into both positive and negative power supplies before being converted into direct current again. This is to regulate fluctuating voltage from the marine battery. This light weight power supply system provides a highly efficient power supply with a low impedance output.

CEA-2006 Compliant: The amplifier is CEA-2006 compliant and is rated at 60 Watts RMS x 4-channel in 4ohms at 20-20,000 Hz with 1% THD+N and a signal-to-noise ratio of 97 dBA.

Bridgeable: The Sony XM-604M marine amplifier is designed for 4-channel or 3-channel applications. You can use the amplifier to power two pair of full-range speakers or the rear channels can be bridged to power a subwoofer while the front channels remain stereo to play your full-range speakers. The amplifier's peak output in 3-channel mode is 110 Watts x 2 + 300 Watts x 1 in 4 ohms.

Protection Circuit and Indicators: The amplifier features the following protection circuitry.

  • Voltage Loss: the Power/Protector indicator will not light up if the amplifier does not sense at least 10.5 - 16V
  • Short Circuit: the Power/Protector indicator will light up Red when the amplifier senses a short circuit
  • Sound Interrupt: the thermal protector guards the amplifier from overheating and will shut the amplifier down if it gets too hot

Gain Controls: The rotary gain controls allow you to independently set the gain for the Front Channels and Rear Channels from 0.3V to 6.0V.

High-Pass Crossover: The amplifier features an 80Hz, 12db per octave high-pass crossover for the front channels.

Low-Pass Crossover: The amplifier also features an 80Hz, 18db per octave low-pass crossover for the rear channels.

Gold-plated Connectors: The RCA jacks, power and speaker terminals are gold plated for corrosion resistance and maximum signal transfer.

Front of the Amplifier: All of the amplifier's connections are found on the front of the amp.

  • Fuse: Two 25 amp fuses
  • Power: Screw terminal (0.375" wide); will accept up to 8-gauge power wire
  • Ground: Screw terminal (0.375" wide); will accept up to 8-gauge ground wire
  • Remote Turn-On: Screw terminal (0.375" wide)
  • Speaker Outputs: 8 Screw terminals (0.375" wide)
  • Speaker-Level Input: 8-pin input for use with included speaker level input harness
  • Front and Rear Line In: Two pair RCA inputs

Speaker Level Input: One 4-channel speaker-level input harnesses is included, allowing you to connect the amplifier to a receiver without RCA line level outputs. The harness has an 8-pin Molex plug that easily connects to the amplifier. The amplifier also is equipped with a Hi-Level Sensing Power On feature that allows the unit to be activated without need for the Remote turn-on connection when using the speaker level harness.
