Bored with your vehicle's sound system? To add some low-frequency fun, you can bridge the MX-N502 amp into 1-channel mode and drive a subwoofer with 175 watts.

A low-pass filter helps your sub sound its best. Sony placed all of the MX-N502's connections and controls on the front of the amp, for a cleaner installation with easier access to adjustments. To protect the amp from overheating and shutting down, an Auto Thermal Control lowers the power output slightly during those moments of extreme, hard driving play. Sony shows its commitment to high quality by gold-plating this amp's connectors for reliable conductivity.

I bought this for a 12 inch sub installed in my car and bridged it. I would not recommend this for that purpose. I could barely hear the sub (it was installed in the trunk), so I returned (easy return from Crutchfield) it for a 350rms amp and now the sub sounds great!

Cons: Seems like power would come and go.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good amp for the price. I bought it to run my Bazooka 6" bass tube. I originally had it supplied by a line output converter on the stock head unit, but I installed one on my friend's tube with an aftermarket stereo, and heard the difference. I now power the amp from a Kenwood KDC-x492. It is louder, but the other day I popped the fuse on the side of the amp. Usually, an amp should go into protection mode before blowing the fuse. I have it bridged to one channel. I guess I was cranking it up! Anyway, good little amp with an affordable price, but it is not for the bass hungry among us.

Pros: Looks good, affordable, single side inputs/outputs/ power/ground

Cons: 500 watts? hmmm

Gracias. Very good product. This small amplifier is really powerful. We're using one for vocals and another one for bass. We have them connected with a 2.4 farad capacitor. The vocals and high-range sounds came through with real quality and without distortion at high volume, and as always I found the best price and service at Crutchfield. Thank you for the quality service to the people of Puerto Rico. I hope this remains unchanged. Thank you.

I purchased this unit as a replacement for a dead amp. The installation was easy since I only had to disconnect the old, and connect the new. This unit is smaller and lighter than my old amp. I love how this amp sounds. I will buy again for my next car. Although it wasn't need, it was comforting to know that customer service was there to assist in case i did something wrong.

XM-N502 in Ram 2500

Ben from Cumming, GA on 3/15/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am using this amp to drive a JL Audio Sealed 12" sub in my Ram 2500 long bed crew cab 4X4 Cummins diesel. I am pleased with this amp and recommend but you should also look at the Blaupunkt GTA-270-DSP. I took some time to play with this amp on my bench and in my truck before I decided to add a sub, it was originally purchased to drive the front door speakers and did a good job. Understand I am very picky about very clean distortion free audio even in my truck. This is a very good amp clean, quiet and I believe preforming better that its 1% THD rating. For anyone looking for good amp in this power range I would recommend this unit, it met and perhaps exceeded my expiations and is built well. My finished build is a Pioneer AVH-4200NEX AV receiver, Sony XM-4045 & XM-N502 amps, Blaupunkt GTA-270-DSP amp, Infinity REF-9623ix front door, REF-3002cfx dash, Kicker KSC65 back doors, JL Audio Sealed 12" sub and a lot of custom wiring. The 4 channel XM-4045 drives the dash and rear door speakers, XM-N502 in 1 channel mode the sub and the GTA-270 the front doors. All powered by #2 positive and negative feed from left side battery fused at 150 amps with custom noise filter.

Pros: Very good amp for the price and I would recommend it. Small size and well built. Unit is preforming very well driving my sub, runs warm not hot even when pushed hard.

Cons: None but looked at the Blaupunkt GTA-270-DSP as well.

Awesome Little Amp!

Jim from Shasta Lake, CA on 1/7/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Don't let the price fool you! This sweet looking little amp does everything you would expect from a more pricier unit. It provides clean sound quality and is worth every penny! It was the easiest amp to install since all the connections are on one side. It barely gets warm after a couple hours of rocking out, so overheating hasn't been an issue like in most amps. Bottom line is you wouldn't regret having this amp in your vehicle!

Pros: Simple one sided connections, easy to hook up, clean sound, compact design, stays cool.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very impressed with this little amp. I'm running it bridged (175w RMS@4ohms) into a Kicker TC10 10" truck sub box, and it does a wonderful job. Clean sound, runs cool, and is compact. For the sale price, I doubt there's a better bargain out there in that power range.

Pros: Good power, compact size, clean layout and sound, inexpensive.

Cons: none.

No frills, but solid budget-oriented amp.

Steve from Pleasant Hill, CA on 12/15/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I picked this amp because I can at least trust Sony more than any no-name/off brand. It's not the cheapest anyone could find, but seems pretty decent for the price. I actually considered other more well-regarded brands, but keeping in mind that I wanted inexpensive and audiophile quality was overkill, I ended up picking this amp. Can't say I'm disappointed. Something worth noting is how I maxed out the bass boost on the headunit. The amp seems to cope with that pretty well, pushing my 8" speakers to give a reasonably punchy bass. It certainly doesn't beat having a dedicated subwoofer, but it's not bad. I'd probably have to spend more to get any more bass.

Pros: Solid for the price. Clean sound.

Cons: No other features other than LPF.

Best you can buy for the money

I have been an electronics repair technician for over 25 years, I have repaired everything from VCR's to DVD players CRT TV's to flat-screen plasma's and more Radios than you can imagine. I only buy SONY and the reason is in all of the years I have been in this field Sony is the brand I have worked on the least and most of the times I have repaired a SONY product it was due to misuse and abuse. I am using the AMP with the LPF set to on bridged to a Sub-woofer it is installed under the rear seat of a 95 Jeep Cherokee that my 16 year old son drives. I have had no problems at all with thermal shutdown despite the non-existent air flow where the Amp is mounted. In my opinion you can't buy a better AMP for the money. By the way did I mention I live in Arizona and it gets hot here.

Pros: Sounds great, Never overheats even under harsh conditions perfect size for sub only using a high power Head unit for front and rear speakers.

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this amp for my sons bday. Nice and simple hookup. The amp does everything it claims. I especially like the design in that all the connections are on the side of the amp instead of the end. I built a simple box to house the subs we already had and now my son has a very clean install in his mustang. the extra time with my son was a good bonus. Now I have my daughters truck next to do this coming Christmas. We will be in touch.... Again. Thanks Crutchfield. You guys rock. Oh, and a special shout out to your guys in the tech. Dept. for troubleshooting when I made a mistake. Duh..

Pros: Low cost, excellent quality, easy install, great tech support

Cons: Unable to flaw this product

Solid budget performer

Kenneth from Yukon, OK on 9/7/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Minimally fussy, costly and flashy - maximally functional, valued, and good looking... Good performance as a sub amp, and doing a bang-up job against 8ohm load and pounding rhythm and bass - haven't had to run heavy cable or cap or big fuses - actual power was originally the cig-lighter circuit, and it really works well

Pros: Size, inputs, options, power/price and body is the (nice) heat sink

Cons: No fan as far as I can tell... If it never gets too hot, then this is a positive anyway!

Features

CEA-2006 Compliant: CEA-2006 is a system of testing and measurement methods for mobile audio amplifiers. This voluntary standard advocates a uniform method for measuring an amplifier's RMS power output and signal-to-noise ratio. The criteria for measuring power uses a DC input voltage of 14.4 volts and the RMS power output is measured into a 4Ω load, with 1% or less Total Harmonic Distortion plus noise (THD+N), and over a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz (for full range amplifiers). Signal-to-Noise ratio is measured in weighted absolute decibels (dBA) at a reference of 1 watt into 4Ω. CEA-2006 standards allow consumers to compare amplifiers on an equal basis. Using CEA-2006 criteria, the Sony XM-N502 is rated at 65 watts RMS x 2 channels, with a 93 dBA signal to noise ratio.

Pulse Power Supply: The amplifier utilizes a Pulse Power Supply system to regulate the fluctuating voltage received from the car's electrical system.

LPF: A two position switch turns the low pass filter (LPF) on/off, the crossover point is fixed at 80 Hz and the slope is 18 dB/octave.

Power Connections: The power, ground, and remote turn-on screw terminals are 0.35" wide. A Phillips-head or flat blade screw driver (not included) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals. A protective cover is included for the power/ground/remote terminal block.

Speaker Connections: The speaker screw terminals are 0.35" wide. A Phillips-head or flat blade screw driver (not included) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals.

RCA Input: The amplifier features one pair of stereo RCA line level inputs (left/right).

Fuse: The amp is protected by a single 25-amp ATO blade fuse.

Customer Q&A

Crutchfield asked
Why did you buy this?

Decent price [ Jeffrey  May 24, 2017 ]
Positive reviews and Sony's reputation. I use to use a lot of Sony produces in video production and always had a good experience. [ Eddie  May 23, 2017 ]
This was a simple replacement for a Boston Acoustics GTA 602 that gave up the ghost after being locked in a trunk in the Florida heat for 7 years. Specs are similar and I'm not being overly choosy now that my car has broken in and has significant road and wind noise. [ David  May 21, 2017 ]
Close in size and peek power as the one I have in my other vehicle. I hope that it preforms as well. [ Anthony  May 14, 2017 ]
Closest Replacement For Old Unit [ Charles  May 11, 2017 ]
Great value for what i need. [ Donald  Apr 28, 2017 ]
I needed to replace an old Eclipse power amp. The Sony's inputs and speaker hookups are in a similar location, so the wiring will just swap over. The original installation had two of the Eclipse amps. I have already replaced one with the Sony amp. The Sony provides a clean, pleasing sound. [ David  Feb 18, 2017 ]
I chose the Sony XM-N502 strictly because it was an Open Box unit and at a very reasonable price point. I have a history dating back more than 30 years with the Sony brand and have confidence the amplifier will meet my general need for amplification in a low wattage application. [ Patrick  Feb 17, 2017 ]
Seems like a good value, and I respect Sony's good reputation for quality. [ Peter  Jan 26, 2017 ]
good amp at a great price [ NERY  Dec 30, 2016 ]
Sony is my preference when it comes to brand [ german  Nov 26, 2016 ]
Will be my second one. Compact and I like the connections on one side of the amp. Great price [ J Gregory  Nov 23, 2016 ]
to get the full use of new speakers, more power is needed. [ Roy  Nov 22, 2016 ]
Good signal to noise ratio [ Chris  Nov 13, 2016 ]
I purchased all the components for my truck stereo back in 1997. I still drive the truck with the sound system. The amp that powered the sub woofer finally gave out. I needed a replacement amp. [ Edmund J.  Nov 13, 2016 ]

The Sony XM-N502 does require a remote turn-on lead for installation. If you would like to discuss further, feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. I hope that helps! [ Larry  Nov 20, 2016 ]  Staff
From my understanding, it is designed to run the left and right channel in stereo (2-channel) or bridged mono (1-channel), not both modes at the same time. If you had a dual voice coil subwoofer, you could run the left and right channel to the sub instead of running in bridges mode. I think this is what you are implying. Either way, make sure you match the ohms of how you wire to your speaker impedance. [ JEFF J  Nov 16, 2016 ]
I checked the manual and it does allow it. You need to install a cap inline with the main speakers and a coil inline with the sub. Depending on the crossover freq you want will depend on the values of the cap and coil. It shows the connections in the manual. [ J Gregory  Nov 15, 2016 ]
No. This amp isn't made to do that. [ JOSEPH  Nov 15, 2016 ]
Since this is a 2 channel amp, you can run 2 speakers in stereo mode OR bridge the 2 channels to run 1 mono channel. You can't do both. You would need a 4 channel amp to do that. [ eric  Nov 14, 2016 ]
Tom, I hope this answer your question. MAX. CHANNEL CONFIGURATION AT 4 OHM (W) / THD (%) 65 W x 2 / 1.0% MAX. CHANNEL CONFIGURATION AT 2 OHM (W) / THD (%) 85 W x 2 / 1.0% Maximum Output Power (1 kHz) MAX. CHANNEL POWER CONFIGURATION AT 4 OHM 2 x 150 W MAX. CHANNEL CONFIGURATION AT 4 OHM BTL 1 x 500 W MAX. CHANNEL POWER CONFIGURATION AT 2 OHM 2 x 210 W [ JOSEPH  Sep 16, 2016 ]
A lot of company's list their amps with power levels that really are not realistic but they still do it. If you drill down in the specs it does list 1x500watts at 4ohms BTL all done at 1khz. So yes it will give 500 watts but it's at one frequency level and probably more distortion than you could handle. Look at RMS power at 1% THD. That's the true power that is meaningful. It took me awhile to find the "500" listed as well. With that said the amp works great for my 2 10" subs in my 66 mustang. One thing that sold it for me was all connections are on one side of the amp so all cables come from one location. [ J Gregory  Sep 13, 2016 ]
The 500W power that they mention is peak power into a 1 ohm load in bridged configuration. However, it's more than just peak, but is actually peak-to-peak, which takes into consideration the entire voltage/current waveform of a sinewave from the highest positive-going voltage to the lowest negative-going voltage. Their specs mention a bridged RMS power of 175W into a 1 ohm load. To get the peak power, simply multiply this figure by 1.414 (the square root of 2). So 175 X 1.414 = 247.45Wpk. To get peak-to-peak, multiply by 2, which gives 247.45 X 2 = 494.9Wpk-pk. Round up the answer, and you've got an attractive advertisement. Frankly, RMS power gives a better indication of what to expect in performance. [ Michael  Sep 12, 2016 ]
Probably at max distortion, not totally horrid on sub duty, but not realistic of course.... Perhaps right before the fuse is blown. Into 2 ohm, dipping lower? Anyway 165 bridged at 4 ohms is probably about the max clean power [ Kenneth  Sep 12, 2016 ]
The 65 watts per channel is the rms rated power @ 4 ohms which means that the amp can put out 65 continuous watts per channel at a Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of 1% or less. This amp can accept a 2 ohm load and put out higher wattage. It can also be bridged (combining both channels to make a single channel). In this configuration, the amp puts out 175 watts rms @ 2ohms. The 500 watt figure is the peak power output in bridged mode. Peak power output on any amp will sound very distorted when the wattage exceeds rms rated output as THD increases exponentially above it. Click on "Details" to learn more. [ eric  Sep 12, 2016 ]
The difference is max or peak power vs. RMS. When shopping for head units or amps, I only pay attention to RMS specs. RMS specs are the best ones to use when comparing different products and matching watts to your speakers. When considering speakers, you must pay attention to ohm specs also. [ JEFF J  Sep 12, 2016 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: There is no need to use wire that big with this amp, but you can use it as long as you put a terminal on the end of the wire. I don't expect the amp's inputs to take wire that big. By the way, that's a good match on this amp with those speakers! If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy  Aug 17, 2015 ]  Staff
