Our take on the Sony XS-GS80L

Sony created their GS Series subwoofers with performance in mind. Their XS-GS80L 8" subwoofer features a mica-reinforced cellular glass-fiber cone that's extremely light and rigid — it's able to move faster and more accurately, giving every kick drum hit or bass guitar lick in your music much more impact.

Ready to rock (for a long, long time)

A large ferrite magnet and a big rubber surround help this Sony handle up to 280 watts RMS. This small sub fits into places where space is at a premium, and it's equally at home in a ported or sealed enclosure. And best of all, Sony backs up these workhorse subs with a cool 3-year warranty.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 165 and 330 watts RMS at 4 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

Sony on the comeback trail

CD from Dallas, TX on 5/27/2016

2010 Chevrolet Aveo5

I wasn't sure what to expect, since I never really use any subs smaller than 10's (usually 12's-15's) but this sub in a sealed .39 cu.ft. box (with a little quilt-batting on the internal walls to break up standing waves) running off of an old school Sony XM-604EQX's bridged rear channels (4 ohms; about 160 watts rms), this thing sounds like a really good SQ-oriented 10. Quite frankly this little guy amazes anyone who hears it. I demo'd the car when it was finished to a friend who used to run a car stereo shop and judged at SQ competitions back in the 80's-90's (the "golden era" of car audio) and he was impressed with the accuracy and that it could still hit the lower notes with authority. He was around when Sony switched everything to the Xplod marketing, did away with the high end stuff (Mobile ES) and started to go cheap on quality. He remarked that this sounds as good as some of the old high-end stuff. GS seems to= the new ES? Sony is making a comeback with the GS line and is killing off the Xplod motif altogether. Good move! The install: Head unit is a Sony XAV-68BT. It's a sound quality set up in my daughter's car. With some old school Sony Mobile ES Xplod XS-HF58's up front. Have the sub crossed over at 160 to help with the blend with the smaller 5 1/4 mid-basses up front in the doors, and the tweeters in the stock locations. Stinger RoadKill was used as sound deadening throughout doors and in the rear hatch area. Factory rear 4x6's were deleted; sub fire

Pros: very good sound quality but still has great low-freq extension (in sealed) good power handling for an 8 low airspace requirements looks quality and is aesthetically pleasing excellent value

Cons: not for me, but some may be looking for more SPL out of this size that case, you need to look at something ranging from an Alpine Type-R to the JL Audio 8W7AE-3.

Sony XS-GS80L 8" Sub

Terry T from Colonial Heights, VA on 7/31/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was hesitant to purchase this sub since I had already picked out the one I wanted. But I called the advisor at Crutchfield and he suggested the Sony XS-GS80L since it was a better fit for installing it in my existing factory Tahoe Sub-Woofer box. He was right, it was a near perfect fit with no modifications to the box. I powered it with a Sound Ordnance 200watt amp and the sound is Great. The advisor walked me through all the steps of hooking up this Sub with the new Sound Ordnance Amp since it was a 4 omh Sub and my factory Sub was a 2omh. Everything worked out great with the installation of the new Sub, Amp, Kenwood Receiver and Kicker Speakers I installed. Crutchfield sent me all the mounting hardware and instructions I needed for a perfect fit. Thanks

Pros: Sounds Great

Sound Quality and Size of Enclosure

MattG from Saint Louis, MO on 4/20/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a solid small enclosure sub to supplement the low end of a factory design system. It hits lower than the majority of 8" subs (28 hz) especially for how small an enclosure is required. I was able to build and mount the enclosure underneath the passenger seat and the amp under the driver, so from the outside nothing is visible at all, a must in a small hatchback where there is very little space to hide sound equipment. I did not rate the coolness factor high because I don't want it to "Look Cool", I actually don't want it to be seen at all.

Pros: Small enclosure space, very wide frequency response range, not too power hungry, and reasonably priced to boot.

Cons: None

Great Sub

Brian from Island Heights, nj on 12/29/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great sub that is not deep and can fit in many locations. The sound is low and clean. I woudl have given it a 5 star but it did not fit my stock (Tahoe 2001) enclsure. I elected to alter the enclosure by fabricating an adapter. Work great and sound great. Highly recommend.

Pros: Sound and Size

Cons: None

Great Little Sub

Cheshire from Massachusetts on 12/14/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great little sub. My Hyundai Veloster Dimension system included a basic 8" sub that did not provide nearly enough power. This little guy was recommended because it fits in the stock 8" sub enclosure. Note that it does require a bit of work with a dremel to fit properly as the frame is a bit bigger than the inset area on the stock enclosure. Don't let this deter you; anybody with moderate skill level with a dremel can modify this to fit easily for the Veloster Dimension system. Naturally, it will also require a separate amp; which I mounted neatly under the driver's seat.

Pros: Great sound, fit my vehicle.

Cons: N/A

Good sound, small package

RossLH from Wisconsin on 11/18/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this product to be a direct replacement to the Ford factory woofer in my SUV. The sound is excellent. The truck has a much richer sound. I do not know the limits of the woofer as I only have a 300w amp pushing this speaker but it definitely has potential. In terms of direct replacement...I was able to use the factory location, the factory box and even the factory cover to seal the speaker to the housing and interior panels. The ability to hide the system was paramount in my purchases. Everything still appears factory (except the head unit, but my SUV has a factory cover that rolls down out the dash to hide it). I can go boom, boom, boom and get out without worrying about people stealing my speakers out the back.

Pros: Good bass in a small package. Direct bolts into the Ford factory location. Is there a such thing as too much bass?

Cons: Must buy and wire an aftermarket amp. The factory amp didn't work with a new head unit. (it was weak anyway...60 amps.)

This was a great purchase for my situation. Aftermarket receiver;lost factory sub; didn't want a bulky box. It fit perfectly in the factory enclosure and pairs well with my M1350. Im amazed at how nice this sub sounds and i haven't even tuned it yet. Great stuff from Crutchfield as always!

Pros: Nice size for smaller enclosures Rich bass and plenty of punch for its size

Hands-on research

Product Research

Cone Design: The XS-GS80L uses an MRC cone (Mica Reinforced Cellular glass fiber composite) to reduce weight and increase rigidity, delivering deep bass response.

Surround: To improve cone motion control, the surround is made of ThermoPlastic Olefin (TPO), a combination of rubber, polypropylene, polyethylene, and a reinforcing filler.

Spring Posts: The spring post wire terminals will accept pin connectors, single banana plugs, and bare wire up to 10 gauge. The binding posts are spaced too far apart to accept dual banana plugs.

Enclosure Compatibility: This woofer can provide extended bass in sealed and ported enclosures:

  • Sealed Enclosure Volume: 0.32 cubic feet
  • Ported Enclosure Volume: 0.41 cubic feet using one 2-3/8" diameter x 6-3/4" long port

Specification Note: Sony's rated power spec for the XS-GS80L is 220 watts (derived using IEC 60268-5 standards). They also list the CEA 2031 compliant RMS power as 280 watts. We've adopted the 220 watt rating simply because it's the more conservative figure.

For my application I already had a pre-existing sub woofer box mounted in the back left side of my Tahoe. This 8" sub fit right in the box where the old one came out. I powered it with a Sound Ordnance 200watt Amp, and it sounds great. [ TERRY R  Jul 31, 2015 ]
