About the AudioControl LC6i

Buck Pomerantz

Want to add your own speakers and amps to a factory system?

AudioControl's LC6i 6-channel line output converter (LOC) allows you to add aftermarket amps, speakers, and subs to your car's factory radio, so you can enjoy better and more powerful sound without losing climate controls, voice-activated functions, or other built-in factory features. The LC6i accepts speaker-level signals, so you can use it with just about any setup, even high-powered amplified systems.

Summing signals

The LC6i sums its input signals together, even if they've been crossed over for tweeters, mids, and subs by the factory system. That way, you can count on a strong, smooth, full-range signal for your processors and amps. The LC6i features six RCA preamp outputs that'll handle a traditional front/rear/sub setup.

Level-matching with an LED indicator

AudioControl makes it easy: set your factory stereo to about 3/4 maximum volume, turn the output level control of the LC6i until the "Maximized" light begins to flicker, then adjust the gain controls on your amps, and you're done. You've level-matched the output of your receiver to the amplifier's input, so you can count on getting maximum performance and minimum noise from your system.

Convenience

The optional dash-mounted ACR-1 wired remote allows you to adjust the volume of the bass while you're on the go. The speaker-level inputs sense incoming signals and turn on the LC6i, while a built-in 12-volt trigger turns on your amps as well. If your factory system only has channels for front and rear speakers, AutoMode™ will create the output you can use for your subs.

More details on the AudioControl LC6i

The AudioControl LC6i replaces these items:

Product Research

Features

Speaker Input: The speaker level inputs are compatible with nearly any factory stereo system, even most Bose systems. There are 3 pair of inputs that will accommodate up to 400 watts.

Channel Summing: The LC6i has the ability to sum together multiple input channels (4 or 6) from the factory source unit into 2 channels. This is handy when the factory system has multiple, actively crossed-over signals sent from the OEM source unit or amplifier(s). For example, in some vehicles there is an actively crossed-over tweeter, midrange, and woofer all in the front of the vehicle. The LC6i lets you take all of those signals and sum them together to get a high-quality, full-range, pre-amp signal without the use of any additional cables or hardware.

AutoMode Inputs: When there is no signal present at the channel 3 input, the channel 2 input automatically feeds the channel 2 and channel 3 outputs.

Output Level: The +/- 12 dB output level allows you to adjust the head unit's voltage to the top of your amp's input range; up to 9.5 volts RMS. Each of the three pair of  RCA outputs has its own level adjustment.

Auto Turn-on: The main speaker level input has a signal sensing circuit; the unit turns on when there's a speaker level input signal and turns off when the signal disappears.

Remote Output: The +12 volt DC remote output will trigger an amp to turn on whenever the LC6i is on. The remote's maximum current output is 1 amp.

Optional Sub Level Control: With the addition of an optional wired remote (161ACR1, sold separately), you can easily adjust the output level of channel 3, often used for a subwoofer.

Ground Isolation: The power supply ground is switchable, in case of ground loop noise. The factory position is fully isolated (typically the best choice), but can be changed to Ground or 200Ω.

Terminal Blocks: The power/ground/remote in/remote out terminal and the speaker level input terminals are removable; the wiring is attached to the block, then the block is plugged into the LC6i. The terminal blocks will accommodate wire up to 12 gauge.

Specifications:

  • Maximum Speaker Level Input: 400 watts
  • Maximum Output Voltage: 9.5 volts RMS
  • Frequency response: 10Hz-22kHz
  • THD: 0.01%
  • Input Impedance: 20 kΩ

Q
Can i connect an epicenter micro to the lc6i? The lc6i will drive my components up front and rear speakers. The epicenter will drive my sub. The idea is to sum the full range with the sub.

I see no reason why not, Teejay. You would want to connect your speaker-level inputs to the LC6i summing the full range and processing the sound going to both amplifiers. You would then simply connect the subwoofer outputs on the LC6i to the RCA line level inputs on your epicenter. Tweak the knobs on both units to dial in the correct settings and make sure that your subwoofer amplifier can handle a high-voltage (up to 9.5-volts) input and you're golden!

I have recently purchased a 2015 Honda Crosstour EX-L V6 and I am looking to transfer the Audio System from My 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport. It houses a Alpine V-12 5 Channel amp (Old School) Polk Audio 6 1/2 Component set, along with 2 MTX Subs. I do not want to tamper with the Factory System in the Honda Crosstour, I just want to improve on the sound. Thank You in advance for all and any help that may be offered. All signs lead to theLC6i convrerter?

This would work. Also check to see if the Amps you are looking at use speaker level inputs. You are going to need to do some wiring either way. Also check If your receiver requires a specific ohm load to send signal. If so you may need to get an additional piece other than LC6i..

You should be able to use the lc6i. I did the same thing in a 2016 Ford Taurus. A lot of planning and running wire throughout the car but once it's all tan you have to get the lc6i to a certain tuning point before you tune the amp. It'll take longer than a normal sound system but it wasn't to bad and it looks killer if you do it right. It will work though 100%

Will this work in a 2020 Jeep gladiator with the 7" screen?

I put this in my 2016 Toyota Tundra as I needed something to get my speaker outputs to line outputs to the 5 channel amplifier I installed. It also boosts the inputs coming from my stereo as mine limits the outputs at higher volumes. If your Jeep does not have line outputs (for RCA cables) then you will need this if you are installing an amplifier. My Tundra has a touchscreen and the navigation system also.
david  Dec 04, 2020

This is a universal Audio Controller that is non vehicle specific. As with amplifiers, audio controlers just work despite what they are installed in. in short, YES, it will work in your jeep.

I'm looking to use a 6 channel amp to boost my current audio setup in my 2005 acura tsx. I have the 2 front door speakers, 2 rear door speakers, and 2 speakers in the rear deck. Would this be the product I need to add that extra power to my factory system with my upgraded speakers all the way around and tie in a aftermarket amp to the factory system?

Yes, but make sure you have amp. I was misled and told that you didn't have to have an amp.
april  Dec 03, 2020
A
Yes if you are planning to leave your factory radio and not change it to an aftermarket radio you will need that receiver school power to speakers with the amplifier

I ended up using a smaller version of this unit because of space. The sound is great

It works fine in my vehicle. I get a nice sound.
james  Dec 03, 2020

The LC6i would certainly work in that situation. It would allow you to balance the stock radio output with the potential differences in speaker efficiencies.

Yes. Was recommended to me for factory stereo and working great.

Not really, LOC are n made to work with factory radio. Factory radios and made so all kinds of music sound alright. LOC thanks music and makes it sound The way it supposed to be heard. An aftermarket receiver does the work of an LOC.

Q
My Infiniti HU (Bose) apparently outputs balanced signals... Will this convert ballanced signals to unbalanced?
corey  Feb 12, 2018
1 answer
A
There shouldn't need to be any conversion; you'll tap the factory amplified positive & negative speaker leads for the audio signal. You would not use the 3rd lead from a "balanced" connection. Mine is mounted under the passenger side seat in a 2017 Toyota Tacoma.I had a professional installer install all the equipment that I purchased from Crutchfield;and the installer said that this was the best location to mount the AudioControl LC6i.Since the install;I have reached under the seat on a few occasions to see just how hot the AudioControl was getting. I must say that the installer knew what he was doing;because it was only warm to the touch each time that I checked it.There is not a lot of room underneath my passenger side seat, but was definitely the right location to mount this equipment. Not to mention as well;that I'm very impressed with this product.Would definitely give it a 5 Star rating...

I have it mounted behind the back seat of a F-150 and have no heat problems with it.
james  Nov 30, 2017
A
I've mounted this component under the passenger seat and it doesn't seem to get real hot. Although, where I did mount it is probably a great spot because plenty of air does pass over it. I'd suggest mounting it in a place where you can easily access the three sound level adjustments. If you do tuck it away behind a panel, I would suggest it have a decent amount of air space around it.

Q
When installing the LC6i or LC7i will you loose the ability to fade and balance the speakers? Also, does the LC7i's AccuBass replace the need for The Epicenter?
lee  Jul 25, 2017
1 answer
A
You do lose the ability to fade and balance due to the summing of the unit. I have experienced this first hand with mine. When you try to fade or balance it will reduce overall volume of the system.

Q
Whats the difference and benefit of getting a line converter vs getting an amp with speaker level inputs?
jay  Jun 29, 2017
2 answers
A
It is my understanding that this unit takes the already pre- and power-amped speaker signals from the head unit in your car, and converts them back into pre-amp outputs, which are then fed to the new power amp. In this way, you are not taking already amplified signals that were going to your speakers, and amping them again with your new amp. The theory is that it will provide for better quality, less-distorted music by not "double-amping" an already amplified signal. I hope this is helps.
d  Jul 01, 2017
A
Hello Jay, For me, the difference and benefits were that line converter clears the distortion that an amp puts out and also easier to tune amp with the distortion being eliminated. That's what I experienced with my purchase of Audio L6. Hope this helps with your purchase.

Q
People do things I don't understand. I am looking at a radio, then aItem # 161LC6IB to add a Focal FPS 4160. then go from there with better speakers?
james  Feb 24, 2017
1 answer
A
If you're looking to install an aftermarket stereo, the LC6i may not be required. Most any aftermarket stereo will offer RCA pre-amp outputs (You'll want at least 2 pairs for the Focal FPS 4160) you can use to provide signal to an aftermarket amplifier. If you're looking to connect the Focal amp to a factory stereo then, yes, you'll want to use a line output converter (like this AudioEngine) to create the RCA connections. I hope that helps. I'm not sure I understand your question. Regardless of how powerful your amplifier may be, you can run RCA cables from the outputs of this AudioControl line output converter to the RCA inputs of your amplifier. I hope that helps! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5
